▼ A pastoral
Gestalt therapeutic intervention model was developed, implemented and
evaluated in the research to facilitate the therapeutic process from guilt and shame to
forgiveness. Guilt and shame can be traumatic self-conscious experiences which has
an impact on abused late adolescent's physical, psychological, social, emotional, moral
and religious development. It can determine the adolescent's behavior, their views of
themselves and their interpersonal relationships. Guilt and shame arouses feelings of
helplessness, anger, blame, bitterness and the need for retaliation, while forgiveness
can relieve these impulses effectively and be utilized as a source for a recovering
experience.
In designing the intervention model, the researcher studied adolescents' emotional
experience, behaviour and management of guilt, shame and forgiveness from a
pastoral base theory within the
Gestalt therapeutic perspective. The formation of the
paradigm is based on a multidisciplinary approach which takes place on the interface
between pastoral counselling and
Gestalt therapy without the unique content and
character of pastoral care or the
Gestalt therapy being lost. By utilizing the intervention
model abused late adolescents are assisted with the necessary awareness to focus on
what is on their foreground in order to reach self-regulation of their emotional
experience. The intervention model was developed as a prototype intervention based
on Enright's forgiveness process model and components of both the pastoral base
theory and the
Gestalt therapeutic process of the Schoeman working model.
The research was performed by using a mixed qualitative-quantitative approach. The
qualitative approach entails the use of applied intervention in intervention research
while the quantitative approach consists of measuring the respondents' experiences of
guilt, shame and forgiveness, using three standardized rating scales before and after
intervention. The researcher applied the intervention research design in a multiple
case study with five respondents and a single-system design was incorporated into the
intervention research. The measurement of respondents' experiences of guilt, shame
and forgiveness after intervention, determined whether the changes took effect,
attributable to their participation in the intervention. Following the research findings the
conclusion was made that the pastoral
Gestalt therapeutic intervention model can be
used effectively to guide abused late adolescents who experience guilt and shame, to

▼ The purpose of the research was to investigate the experiences of adolescents who identify with the Emo subculture in a specific high school in the northern suburbs of Cape Town. Qualitative, applied research of an exploring and descriptive nature was conducted. The literature study focused on human development, the concepts contra-culture and subculture,
Gestalt development,
Gestalt therapy theories and the ecological theory. This served as a framework for the findings, which was based on unstructured interviews with persons who identified with the Emo subculture. Data triangulation was of special interest in this study to ensure reliability and validity, especially in the light of the fact that limited specialised literature is available on the Emo subculture.

▼ Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a major concern in the South African society. Although policies
and legislation are directed at the protection of children, the high incidence of child sexual
abuse is indicative of problems in society which cannot be addressed adequately with current
service delivery. Individual interventions with children directly affected with CSA are still the
norm, and even such services are inadequate to accommodate the high numbers of children
affected by CSA. There is a polarity in terms of the shortage of social workers versus the
need for intervention for this vulnerable group. Innovative and effective approaches to
intervention for families affected by CSA were clearly needed. Based on practical
experience in the field of CSA the researcher was interested in family play therapy as a
possible approach to address CSA. Not only would more people be reached with limited
services, but by involving family members in intervention it was envisaged that family
systems would be strengthened, family members would be more attuned to each other and
that the family would be more able to provide a safe space for the direct victim between
sessions. Furthermore family members would be enabled to attend to their own processes
of integration regarding the CSA.
Intervention research guided this study aimed at developing tools for the helping profession.
The research question focused on what the typical components would be of an integrated
family play therapy approach. Participant groups included professionals working in the field
of CSA. Focus groups and discussion groups with such professionals and also a literature
review helped the researcher to identify functional elements to be included in a preliminary
family play therapy model that was applied to four families who were affected by CSA.
During the family play therapy sessions rich information was obtained on the experiences of
families. Based on the data collection from the various participant groups an integrated
family play therapy model was developed. Findings are reported in three articles. Article 1
outlines the views of professionals on family play therapy within the context of child sexual
abuse in South Africa. The professional participants agreed that individual intervention in the
context of CSA is not the ideal and that systemic, Gestalt-based family play therapy may
offer avenues for trauma integration for family members. They also indicated that they do
not have adequate knowledge and skills to engage in family play therapy. They made some
suggestions for the incorporation of play in family play therapy interventions. The second
article captured the experiences of family members as expressed in the family play therapy
context and article 3 outlined an integrated family play therapy model based on the previous
phases of the intervention research.

▼ Gestalt theory and Positive Psychology formed the underlying theoretical frameworks of this study. Both Gestalt theory and Positive Psychology adopt a positive outlook towards human nature with the possibility of individuals becoming self-supporting and fully functioning. Both theories also regard awareness to be paramount in establishing healthy self-regulation and optimal well-being. Both Gestalt theory and Positive Psychology provided the link between the concepts, and were also used to describe the main concepts in the study.
A review of the literature shows that children living in underprivileged communities often face many environmental stressors that can impact on their well-being and optimal psychological, cognitive, emotional and physical functioning. When this occurs, children are often not able to meet very important needs. They may have to find alternative ways to „survive‟ and protect themselves from certain stressors and cope with their environment. Very often these coping strategies are dysfunctional and certain parts within the child can become cut off or pushed aside, severing healthy contact with the environment. The child may also experience a sense of numbing and lack of awareness of senses, emotions and thoughts. The child is therefore living out of awareness. The literature suggests that the process of artmaking can contribute to facilitating awareness, which can enhance selfunderstanding and possibly lead to a greater sense of well-being. The researcher attempted to explore the kinds of awareness that could be facilitated through the artmaking process.
A qualitative research design with a phenomenological strategy of enquiry was used for this study. Seven children in middle childhood living in a low socio-economic community took part in the study. They were between the ages of eleven and twelve years and had suffered some form of environmental stress. They had been subjected to substance and alcohol abuse, violence, death and divorce. Focus groups and semi-structured interviews were used in order to understand what awareness may have been facilitated in children during the art-making process. The data collected were analysed thematically.
The results revealed that the art-making process enabled the participants to experience certain kinds of awareness. The participants became aware of certain emotions and feelings like happiness, enjoyment, calmness, pride and mastery, as well as feelings of anger, sadness and denial. The participants were able to recognise and express positive emotions, but it appeared that the more complex emotions were recognised although not expressed. The most common emotion experienced by the participants was the sense of happiness and enjoyment they seemed to feel as they worked with the different art materials. It appeared that the playful nature of the art-making process kept them engaged and in contact with the process. The participants also became aware of a range of tactile experiences that each art medium offered; clay, paint, collage, hand printing and texture…

▼ The aim of this study is to explore and describe late adolescents' experiences of using Mxit as a source of peer–support during their Grade 12 year in order to provide a broader and more realistic understanding of their support preferences and needs. The classic text of Gestalt Therapy theory in conjunction with current literature provided an overview of the theoretical underpinnings of this study, including the key tenets of Gestalt theory, the core Gestalt theoretical assumptions, Mxit as a social networking application, peer–support and late adolescence. A qualitative research approach with an instrumental case study of eight Grade 12 learners from one public high school in the Northern suburbs of Johannesburg was implemented. The research findings indicated that the affordability, accessibility and non–threatening nature of using Mxit as a source of peer–support made it a viable resource during stressful periods. Although face–to–face peer–support was preferred owing to the limited existential dialogue and lack of trust that was experienced while communicating over Mxit, the adolescents perceived a need for the development of peer–support groups and one–on–one counselling over Mxit as a result of the lack of supportive others experienced during Grade 12 that frequently led to depressive symptoms and/or suicidal thoughts.

▼ The researcher found little information in literature reviewed about how
Gestalt Play
Therapy is being used in the treatment of visually impaired children. The aim of the
study was to expand knowledge regarding this issue.
A basic qualitative research study of an exploratory and descriptive nature was
undertaken to describe how this
therapy may be used in the treatment of such
children. A representative sample was drawn from the population, consisting of
gestalt play therapists who previously provided assistance to these children, using a
purposive non-probability method. Data collection took place through the execution
of semi-structured telephone interviews. Collected data was analysed using the
Thematic Content Analysis to search for related themes (in line with the objectives of
the study) in transcribed interviews. The general conclusion drawn from the empirical
data was that
gestalt play
therapy can be used to good effect in the treatment of
visueel gestremde kinders. 'n Verteenwoordigende steekproef is getrek, volgens 'n
telefoniese onderhoude.

▼ In South Africa the Center for Child Youth and Family Studies is training practitioners yearly to
work as play therapists from a
gestalt approach. Once these practitioners successfully complete their
training and qualify they could begin practicing play
therapy from a
gestalt approach. Each of these
recently qualified play therapists is then responsible for organising and committing to their own
supervision.
Therapists who do not attend supervision risk stagnation and burn out due to a lack of positive
interaction in relation to receiving knowledge and support from those more experienced in
gestalt
play
therapy and from their peers. At present there is a perceived lack of supervision resources
based on a
gestalt approach particularly for those recently qualified play therapists working from a
gestalt approach that are geographically distant from the areas where training takes place.
This study sought to answer the question of what supervision resources are currently available to
recently qualified play therapists working from a
gestalt approach in South Africa. In order to
answer this question combined quantitative and qualitative research approaches were used. An
internet survey questionnaire was completed by recently qualified play therapists working from a
gestalt approach which formed part of the quantitative section of the research. Structured interviews
were conducted via Skype with professionals experienced in the field of
Gestalt therapy theory and
supervision from a
gestalt approach and this formed part of the qualitative section of the research.
Overall the results from the merged data indicate a lack of supervisors qualified to give supervision
based on a
gestalt approach. This factor contributes to the overall lack of supervision resources
based on a
gestalt approach for recently qualified play therapists working from this approach.
Geographical distance from supervision resources places financial and time constraints on recently
qualified play therapists that prevent them from accessing supervision based on a
gestalt approach.
Despite this results indicate those recently qualified play therapists working from a
gestalt approach
are attempting to meet their responsibility and requirement for supervision.

The present study about the doctor-patient relationship aims to use the bibliographic review to present a historical overview on the behaviors of the doctor-patient relationship, the quality of hearing and presence in times of pain and suffering from the beginning of medicine to the current days. Study analysis prove advances in medical and technology fields do not replace the doctor-patient relationship. Such relationship is taken as a first and essential source to adhere to treatments, support to face the obstacles arising out of acute and chronic illnesses. We also discuss the Fritz Perls Gestalt-therapy approach, focusing on the theoretical scope of the individual relationship to its environment. The main concepts of the Gestalt-therapy are: contact, contact roles, contact limits, support and awareness, and they are part of mens relationship to his environment, favoring an integrative presence in the self and the world. We believe such approach may provide facilitating instruments to improve the quality of presence, hearing and integrating understanding of the doctor-patient relationship. Bubers Dialogic Relationship inserts the dialogue in the between and the alternation of the encounter. It indicates a therapeutic attitude based on Inclusion, Presence and Commitment to the dialogue, as well as the conditions required to have a high-quality encounter. Those are suggestions for a better clinical practice of the doctor-patient relationship

▼ In South Africa today only one in every three children
lives with both of their biological parents. Most children not
living with biological parents live with a grandparent.
Vulnerable
children are those whose basic needs for food, shelter, safety,
protection, and education are not met or are insufficiently met.
Many children who are orphaned are vulnerable, but vulnerability is
not limited to orphans only. Children who live with their
grandparents can be called vulnerable children as they suffer the
loss of parental contact through death, illness, abandonment or
migrant labour.
Care-givers of vulnerable children face numerous
challenges in their daily lives. Although the care of grandchildren
by grandmothers is not unusual or new, the traditional network of
financial and emotional support for this care-giving task has
gradually fallen away over the years as parents are deceased, or
too ill to work or have abandoned their children. This has left
care-givers, many of whom are elderly and themselves vulnerable,
with less resources and more financial and care-giving
responsibility. Care-givers and the children for whom they care
live in a wider context of poverty, unemployment, the HIV pandemic
and crime in South Africa. Care-givers are at risk of burn-out due
to the intensity of the challenges they face. Increasing resilience
of care-givers serves to increase the positive outcomes for the
vulnerable children in their care.
The goal of this study was to
explore whether participation in awareness-based
Gestalt group work
sessions would enhance the resilience of care-givers of vulnerable
children.
In the context of applied research, a mixed methods
approach was used, specifically an embedded mixed methods approach.
The study measured respondents‟ resilience before and after the
implementation of a series of eight
Gestalt group work sessions. A
quasi-experimental research design, the comparison group
pre-test-post-test design, was used for the quantitative part of
the study and a case study design for the qualitative part.
Quantitative data were collected through a structured interview
using a pre-determined interview schedule based on theoretical
constructs of resilience. Qualitative data were collected through
semi-structured interviews, observations and field notes. The
respondents were 19 care-givers of vulnerable children from a
semi-rural area in KwaZulu-Natal. They were selected through
snowball sampling and were assigned into comparison and
experimental groups through a simple random sampling method. The
experimental group participated in the
Gestalt group work sessions
whilst the comparison group did not.
Although the quantitative
results showed no significant difference in the pre- and post-test
results, the qualitative results confirmed that experimental group
members experienced a positive effect upon their resilience through
participating in the
Gestalt group work.
Conclusions drawn from
the qualitative findings indicated that respondents had a high
level of resilience present in their lives before the…

This work emerges from questions developed by the researcher in the course of his career, with an emphasis on experience in Gestalt Therapy (GT) and also Multidisciplinary Residency in Family and Community (RMSFC) Health. With theoretical and practical knowledge in both areas, proposes the construction of theoretical and conceptual bridges between them, trying to show the possible contributions that GT as a psychological approach can offer to psychologists working in the context of the Family Health Strategy (FHS). Adjustment of South African expatriates in Dubai : a gestalt approach for family and child therapy

▼ The literature, for example, Black and Stephens (1989), as well as Marchetti-Mercer (2009),
emphasise that mental health professionals may be increasingly faced with the challenges linked to
migration and expatriate life. There is also a paucity of information regarding expatriate adjustment
in South African psychological literature, and to this end, the aim of this study was to examine how
South African expatriate families adjust to a foreign environment like the Middle Eastern city of
Dubai.
In Dubai, many South African expatriates are employed in sectors such as hospitality, medicine,
construction, education, including financial services and it is estimated that the number of South
Africans living in Dubai are between 40 000 and 100 000 (The Homecoming Revolution, 2008:1).
Expatriate families face the challenges of adjusting to different laws, climates, cultures, religions and
social systems. They may experience lack of emotional support, grief, feelings of isolation and
loneliness. Unfamiliar living conditions and a change of lifestyle may present as a crisis for certain
families, manifesting in family conflict and financial hardship. Given the number of South African
families living in Dubai, this study aimed to explore how these families adjusted to the living
conditions of this region. A second aim of the study was to use the findings yielded from the data to
formulate
Gestalt therapeutic techniques, enabling family therapists to assist expatriate families with
adjustment difficulties. A phenomenological system of enquiry was employed to study the
experiences of six South African families and fifteen members of a focus group. Family members of
the six family case studies were interviewed, their experiences audio-recorded, and then transcribed
verbatim. Three children elected to provide drawings of their experiences. The focus group
discussion was also audio-recorded and then transcribed verbatim. Upon analysis, six common
themes emerged, namely, social support, personality factors, environmental conditions,
acculturation, grief and disillusion. The findings of the study assisted the researcher in formulating
five therapeutic
Gestalt techniques that would facilitate and optimise communication amongst
expatriate family members. Three of the therapeutic techniques were designed by the researcher,
and two were adapted from existing
Gestalt techniques. It is hoped that the findings in the present
study will assist in amplifying the existing knowledge base regarding
Gestalt therapy techniques for
families and children, including the current research on expatriate adjustment and the psychological
ramifications related to this phenomenon.

▼ Caregivers in children’s homes are the front-end workers who care for looked-after
children daily. Looked-after children in children’s homes constitute a particularly
vulnerable group, who are known to reveal mental health problems, which
complicate the care-giving role. In conjunction with the lack of training and support,
caregivers experience great challenges. This research study explores and describes
the training and holistic care-giving needs of caregivers, by applying qualitative
needs assessment design, where the responses of 12caregivers are explored and
described. Data from the literature and semi-structured interviews and
questionnaires was categorised into themes. Overarching findings include altruistic
needs, the need for support and to be valued, with the researcher making
recommendations and providing a convincing argument for immediate therapeutic
support for caregivers.

▼ Children who have sensory integration disorders face many physical, social and emotional challenges. Unusual emotional and behavioural reactions to sensory stimuli are often displayed. These children are referred to professionals including
Gestalt play therapists, although formal training in sensory integration is limited to the scope of occupational
therapy.
Gestalt play therapists routinely utilize sensory rich activities during
therapy. This study sought to explore and describe how
Gestalt play therapists establish sensory contact with children who have sensory integration disorders. A combined qualitative and quantitative approach was utilized. A questionnaire and semi-structured interviews were used to gain rich descriptive data. Participants felt that the therapeutic process with these children was markedly different than with other children. Participants who were aware of their own sensory difficulties demonstrated an increased ability to accommodate these children in
therapy. A need for increased knowledge and/ or training in sensory integration was strongly expressed.

▼ The purpose of this study was to examine the differential effects of
Gestalt and Cognitive-Behavioral group
therapy interventions on assertiveness and self-esteem among women with physical disabilities facing abuse. The eleven women, who met the study criteria, were randomly assigned to one of two experimental conditions,
Gestalt Therapy (GT) and Cognitive-Behavioral
Therapy (CBT) group interventions. The Demographic Questionnaire (Adam Rita, 2009) documented personal characteristics of the participants. The criterion instruments were: a) RAS (Rathus, 1973), and b) CFSEI-2 (Form AD, Battle, 1992) measuring assertiveness and self-esteem respectively and were administered pre-and-post treatment. The research was conducted over a period of six weeks, totaling six weekly two-hour group sessions. It was hypothesized these interventions would help women with physical disabilities facing abuse increase their levels of assertiveness and self-esteem. To determine if the differences between groups were statistically significant for the two dependent variables, assertiveness and self-esteem, MANCOVAs within subjects contrasts and between subjects effects were examined. Based on these findings, neither
Gestalt Therapy (GT) nor Cognitive-Behavioral
Therapy (CBT) group interventions produced statistically significant outcome effects on the dependent variables, assertiveness and self-esteem. The findings did not support the research hypotheses; therefore both null hypotheses were retained.

The intention of this study was to make a preliminarily evaluation of the effectiveness of gestalt group therapy in the treatment of major depression through the quantitative assessment of the symptoms of depression and an assessment of quality of life and social functioning. The open study was of an exploratory nature and involved patients who were undergoing pharmacological treatment for major depression and who participated in sixteen gestalt group therapy sessions. The effectiveness of the therapeutic process was assessed by Structured Clinical Interviews at the beginning and at the end of treatment at which were applied the DSM-IV: Disorder Axis I, 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, Medical Outcomes Study 36-item Short-Form Health Survey Scale and Self-Assessment of Social Adequacy. Seven patients completed the sixteen weeks of treatment. A clinical improvement in the depressive symptoms was observed. With regard to quality of life, the patients showed improvement in their physical functioning, general health, mental health and bodily pain. They considered themselves poorly adjusted to society and presented improved clinical indicators after group therapy. The results suggest that participation in gestalt group therapy can help reduce the symptoms of depression, improve some areas of quality of life and demonstrate clinical gains. Further studies with a larger sample, the use of a control group and improved assessment methods of social adequacy and functionality are needed

▼ The aim of this study was to explore and describe the Grade 7 adolescents’ meaning of the phenomenon of trauma to gain a more comprehensive understanding of their perceptions in order to contribute to dialogue and discourse. Current literature was used to provide an overview of the theoretical underpinnings of this study which included a summary of the key tenets as well as an overview of the relevant core theoretical assumptions of Gestalt Therapy theory, early adolescence as a developmental stage, and the concept of trauma. A qualitative instrumental case study was used to provide a comprehensive description of the subjective perceptions of the participants, using phenomenological one–on–one semi–structured interviews and documents in the form of drawings. The sample consisted of a selected group of nine early adolescents from one Northern suburb school. The common thread that ran throughout this study was that trauma is perceived as a negative experience that is unique for each individual. The findings indicated that individuals who have been exposed to a trauma are affected on levels of contact and awareness. Lack of support was found to lead to the use of inappropriate contact styles which led to incomplete Gestalts, resulting in unresolved traumatic responses, which affected their social skills and academic development.

▼ One in five children are born highly sensitive (HS), with nervous systems that are more
sensitive to sensory subtleties. The highly sensitive child (HSC) presents with behaviour
that is often a way of coping with sensory overload from their environment. The
symptoms of HS are often mistaken for shyness, introversion, timidity and a low sensory
threshold. Because of their lack of understanding, teachers mislabel and misdiagnose
these children as being mentally ill, or as suffering from, inter alia, ADHD or learning
problems. When such children (HSC) are misunderstood, they begin to feel ‘different’
and ‘flawed’, which can lead to low self–esteem. The purpose of this study is to explore
perceptions by HS children in middle childhood, to explore how aware they are of HS,
and to discover the extent to which they have been affected by negative labelling often
caused by being misunderstood, misdiagnosed and misinterpreted. The structured
interviews conducted with HSC comprised of an interactive story, which had been
written and illustrated to create explicit awareness of HS. After the storybook had been
read, an interview schedule on HS was applied. Next, a focus group interview was
conducted with the teachers to gather more rich data, thereby ensuring its
trustworthiness. The aim was to explore the teachers’ perceptions of HSC in middle
childhood. This exploration was necessary for making effective recommendations for
managing and supporting HSC, so that the children can reach their full potential. Many
HSC are gifted, and often become visionaries and pioneers in their particular fields.

▼ The problem that motivated the study was that the way in which juvenile sex offenders are configuring themselves, and the way that self-development is currently understood, potentially has negative implications for the way they may be treated in
therapy. The
Gestalt paradigm was the lens through which this phenomenon was explored. The research method was from a qualitative perspective and was an explorative and descriptive analysis of the factors that contribute to this self-configuration. Data was collected by way of unstructured and semi-structured interviews and systematically represented by the emergent themes. Results showed the factors that contribute to the self-configuration of the juvenile sex offender. Recommendations were made to the juveniles, their caretakers and the social workers. The researcher concluded that the
Gestalt approach to self-configuration, with its emphasis on the field and relationships, provides a coherent lens through which to approach the phenomenon of juvenile sex offenders.

▼ D.Ed.
The primary goal of this research is to describe a model for educational psychologists to guide the child in the informal housing community to deal constructively with anger. The rationale for the research is derived from changes in the South African society. In the struggle for survival, the child develops inappropriate ways of dealing with anger. The child's mental health is therefore endangered and through facilitative interaction the educational psychologist can support the child in developing skills in dealing constructively with anger. The study commences with a theoretical framework in which the suppositions of the research are discussed. The meta-theoretical suppositions, based on the theory of educational psychology for the whole person, phenomenology, educational philosophy and developmental psychology are discussed. Thereafter theoretical suppositions developed from the meta-theoretical suppositions are discussed. The theoretical suppositions are complemented by a chapter on the design of the research. A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual design and functional school of thought are followed. The principle of logic and justification for scientific research is answered from a postmodern perspective. The descriptive phenomenological method of Giorgi (1985:8-19) was used to conduct an in-depth exploration of the child's management of anger. Guba's model of trustworthiness (1985:201) - which was used and based on truth-value -applicability, consistency and neutrality is then discussed. Ethical precautions that were taken are discussed. The discussion of the research results is presented from the child's perspective - interviewing, observation and information are derived from documents during the course of twenty-one weeks. Eight children took part in exploring their management of anger. During the course of eleven weeks facilitative interaction supported by the Gestalt-therapeutical process of Oak!ander (1978:53-66; 2002:1-17) took place in a group context. Individual interviews were then conducted. The last six weeks were succeeded by informal sessions with soccer play as main activity. The children revealed how they experience difficulty in dealing with anger due to inadequate support and modelling in their interaction with the community in which they live. This was done by means of projective media. The child's predisposition in relation to anger is reflected in an external locus of control. It develops into a cycle of problematic management of anger. The research resulted in the development of a model for educational psychologists. The primary supposition of the model is that facilitative interaction supported by the Gestalttherapeutical process of Oaklander can aid the educational psychologist to guide the child between the age of eleven and twelve, to deal constructively with anger. In the process of facilitative interaction the child is supported to develop self-awareness, self-knowledge and self-regulation through which the child is enabled to deal with anger constructively.…

The Church is called to care for these children in the form of pastoral care. In practise children are often neglected and do not receive the care that they are entiteld to. One of the main reasons is because pastors and religious workers use an intervention method that depends mainly on the verbal skills of the child.
The six steps of intervention research was used to develop a pastoral model in the form of course. The innitial intervention model was tested in case studies and refined. The focus of this model is to use play as a mode of intervention from a
Gestalt approach.
The course will enable pastors and religious workers to care for children more effectively. The main concepts of the research forms the basis of this model with practical excercises.

▼ The aim of this qualitative study was to explore and describe the experiences and needs
of mothers of sexually abused children. A conceptual framework outlined the theoretical
underpinnings of this study which focused on the core theoretical concepts of Gestalt
therapy theory and the field of child sexual abuse with particular focus on the impact that
the child’s trauma has on the mother. Semi–structured interviews were conducted with a
sample of five mothers in order to gain rich data from their phenomenological experience.
These interviews were transcribed into text and analysed. Several themes and categories
emerged and were explored with the use of a literature control. These themes included the
mother’s phenomenological experience of the sequence of disclosure, their awareness of
the impact of their child’s sexual abuse on their holistic sense of self, their intra and
interpersonal contact making styles, their need to facilitate a healthy sense of self and
lastly their phenomenological knowledge gained through their field experience.
The disclosure of their child’s sexual abuse signifies the start of the secondary trauma
experienced by mothers, and the start of the cycle of a new experience that they struggle
to bring to closure. This knowledge that their child has been sexually abused has an
immediate negative impact on the mother’s field and their sense of self. Their process of
healthy self–regulation is hindered due to the strong negative polarities in the self being
formed and the self–blame that the mothers experience. This study therefore concluded
and strongly recommended that mothers of sexually abused children receive support in the
form of therapeutic intervention and education while their child receives therapy.

▼ The aim of this study was to explore and describe the experiences of professionals
utilizing sensory-motor play (SMP) with young children (YC) in Gestalt play therapy in
order to provide recommendations for professionals and to create an awareness of the
value of SMP in Gestalt play therapy. Coming from an occupational therapy
background, the researcher became aware of the potential value of utilizing sensorymotor
play in Gestalt play therapy with YC. SMP, being a vital part of the sensory
integration developmental process of YC, promotes body awareness through muscle
movement and control. Awareness is one of the major aims of Gestalt play therapy. All
the senses contribute to YC's awareness, including the frequently unacknowledged
vestibu lar and proprioceptive senses. In order to treat YC holistically, the developmental
importance of SMP should be acknowledged and integrated in the therapy process.
Professionals young children working in this field, coming from diverse educational
backgrounds, do not necessarily have the knowledge or experience of the utilization of
SMPwith YC.
A qualitative research approach with a case study research design was adopted in
order to explore and describe the experiences of professionals regarding the utilization
of SMP with YC in Gestalt play therapy, through applied research. The empirical data
was collected by conducting two focus group discussions with professionals from
diverse educational backgrounds. Two main themes with different sub-themes and
categories were identified by analysing the data. The main themes are that participants
are of the opinion that SMP enhances the therapeutic relationship and that SMP has a
self-regulatory function.
The researcher concludes that professionals gained a new awareness regarding the
subject of discussion and experienced that uti lizing SMP in Gestalt play therapy with YC
can promote and facilitate whole body/mind awareness and integrated healing.

▼ Roughly 50 percent of individuals diagnosed with severe mental disorders are affected by substance abuse, with 29 percent abusing alcohol or drugs. Social isolation, discrimination, physical illness, and financial worries place adults at risk for addiction and mental illness, and interventions focused on legacy with adults with co-occurring disorders may help to alleviate these concerns. The word legacy as related to this study means a set of past glories and memories that can be explicitly passed to a person’s next generations including genetics, materials, values, culture, and life stories. Published literature on legacy of adults with co-occurring disorders is nonexistent. The purpose of this study was to uncover the legacy adults with co-occurring disorders possess to manage life stresses. A framework utilizing existential,
gestalt, and narrative theory will serve to discuss the theoretical importance of legacy. An experimental study was conducted to test a Legacy intervention’s impact on life satisfaction and self-efficacy. Seventy patients with co-occurring disorders were randomly selected into two groups: ordinary partial hospital program (PHP) intervention or Legacy intervention (which combines PHP with Legacy intervention). Both interventions included 10 sessions over 5 weeks and were offered for three cohorts (about 10-15 patients each). The outcome measures included: sense of legacy, life satisfaction and self-efficacy. The legacy definition for the intervention subsample was consistent with existing literature; however, several unique themes were also identified within this population. Life satisfaction and self-efficacy scores increased overtime and were statistically significant within the experimental group; however, not significantly different statistically when compared to the control group changes over time.

▼ In the U.S., the number of inmates diagnosed with schizophrenia is approximately four times greater than that found in the general population. Alarmingly, these inmates rarely receive the mental health treatment they need. Previous studies have suggested that
Gestalt therapy can have beneficial affects for inmates. However, further research examining treatment models for inmates diagnosed with schizophrenia is needed. This current study examined qualitative data from a proposed
Gestalt group
therapy treatment model for incarcerated schizophrenia. Results from modified analytic induction demonstrated increased levels of participation, autonomy, interpersonal skills, information seeking and a reduction in psychotic symptoms. This study also provided novel insight regarding treatment methods, phases of treatment, and therapist characteristics as the humanity of the schizophrenic experience emerged.

It is understood the Gestalt Therapy as a psychotherapeutic approach eminently comprehensive and experiential, starting from the prejudice that in gestalt therapy is an ethical placed upon understanding and acceptance of the Other, in itÂs essential difference, which can be understood as the ethical encounter, dialogical, epistemologically rooted in dialogical philosophy of Martin Buber. ▼ The aim of this study was to explore and describe the psychosocial problems perceived (their phenomenological field) by children in middle childhood, living in shelters in the Cape Metropolitan Area.
The psychosocial problems included poor self regulation as a result of disturbances in the contact cycle, restrictions in shelters negatively impacting the holistic sense of self, barriers hindering relationships with significant others and the continuation of violence into the participants‟ broader field. The experience of multiple losses and persistence of violent behavior within and without the shelter context was a thread that ran through this study.
Current literature provided an overview of the theoretical underpinnings of this study which included the key tenets of
Gestalt therapy theory, core
Gestalt principles, the child living in a shelter and development in middle childhood. A qualitative research approach with a case study of ten children from three shelters was implemented.

Die navorsingsbevinding was dat kreatiwiteit onontbeerlik is in spelterapie met kinders wat seksueel misbruik is in „n multi-kulturele konteks soos Suid-Afrika.; Creativity is the central concept of this research. The goal of the research was to explore the value of creativity in play
therapy with sexually abused children in the multi-cultural South-African context.
The research was done from a constructivistic epistemological foundation and existential-phenomological paradigms.…

▼ Sexual abuse of children and adolescents has reached pandemic proportions in Namibia. It is widely
recognised that this traumagenic experience could have a profound and long-lasting effect on
survivors. Nevertheless, few survivors in Namibia access therapy; often because of non-disclosure or
non-reporting, being socioeconomically disadvantaged and the overburdened public sector therapists.
This study set out to explore how adolescent survivors use the Nine Figure Picture Story (9FPS)
embedded within the context of Gestalt Healing tasks. A variety of play therapy experiments was
used to raise the clients’ awareness and to evoke their therapy stories (as these relate to Gestalt
therapy) and their trauma stories (by means of the 9FPS). The researcher-therapist hoped that the
study would enhance the understanding of the meaning-making of sexually abused adolescent clients,
and in doing so, contribute to therapeutic practice in Namibia and elsewhere.
Research which aims to uncover personal meaning-making and hear the voice of the participants
already suggests that the qualitative paradigm would be apposite. An exploratory case study was
conducted in Namibia between August 2010 and November 2010. Two adolescent survivors of
sexual abuse who met the eligibility criteria were drawn from the population by means of nonprobability
sampling. The sample was heterogeneous: one participant was a survivor of chronic
intrafamilial rape; the other of a single incident, extrafamilial child sexual abuse (CSA). The data
corpus included six and ten recorded therapeutic sessions with the two clients respectively;
transcribed intake and termination semi-structured interviews with the parents; the researcher’s
process and observation notes; and the clients’ objets d'art and Therapy diaries. To capture the
tapestry of CSA accurately and holistically, the stories of the two participants were first analysed
individually and thereafter synthesised into a theoretical comparative analysis. Trustworthiness was
enhanced by means of investigator, theory, data and methodological triangulation. A number of
safety, beneficence and non-maleficence measures contributed to the ethicality of this sensitive
research.
The research uncovered that, despite their differences, the two participants presented with
posttraumatic signs and patterns often reported in the literature. Most insightful was how the
survivors disavowed the CSA to become “not me” (Joyce & Sills, 2006: 92). As it relates to
neurobiological hypotheses, it was revealed that the tactile and visuospatial Gestalt play therapy,
specifically the 9FPS, seemed to access and address the fragmented, non-sequenced and non-verbal
trauma memory. It was found that the 9FPSs gave the unfinished business from the past a
miniaturised dimension in the present and that the “differentiated unity” (Reynolds, 2005: 162)
enhanced its assimilation into the self.

▼ A notable paucity in practice interventions and literature currently exists in regard to self-support in first-time mothers. Recent literature and practice interventions seem to focus largely on social support resources, highlighting the deficiency in the investigation of self-support in first-time mothers as an integral and holistic concept and/or focus point for intervention. Literature continues to illustrate the many challenges first-time mothers encounter and therefore this study focuses on self-support experiences of the first-time mother in relation to her environment by providing an original stance of enquiry. The investigator aimed to explore and describe the experiences of self-support in first-time mothers in the Cape Metropole. The study was conducted qualitatively and according to an Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) research design. This provided the researcher with a dual method of investigation: The first undertaking was to describe actual accounts of the participants‟ self-support experiences, while the second was to give an interpretation of these accounts which would reflect their experiences in an understandable, yet authentic manner. The meta-theoretical framework of Gestalt Therapy Theory (GTT) was applied due to its holistic and integrative nature, while the additional theoretical frameworks of Self Determination Theory (SDT) and Positive Psychology (PP) served as contributors to deepen understanding. The sample consisted of thirteen first-time mothers from moderately diverse socio-economic backgrounds. The study succeeded in giving in-depth exploratory descriptions of their self-support experiences during the first two years of motherhood. Findings displayed that the participants‟ self-support cannot be separated from their constantly shifting environments and that self-support is an integrated and dynamic process of development. Internal elements as well as environmental factors prove to disrupt this process of self-support development. Vital components for developing self-support were assuming responsibility for own well-being as a mother; as well as arriving at insight. Joy and gratefulness as experienced by the participants were proven to serve as motivators to sustain self-support. The study further exhibits that a supportive relationship is able to exist between the first-time mother‟s self-support and her environment when she is able to effectively identify, reach out and utilise social support resources available in her environment. Self-support serves as an experiential process (as an alternative to a fixed outcome) where the first-time mother is able, through experience, to mature and become more self-supportive. Findings argue that ideal self-support during novel motherhood is the capability to be in a mature interactive relationship with the environment, constantly adapting according to the organisation of the environmental field.
