▼ My dissertation tackles the question of how to theorize the democratic commitment that collective decisions must accommodate the voices and interests of those subject to them. The rigorous demands of this democratic commitment, on my view, require the thoroughly participatory stance embodied in radical democracy. Drawing on the work of George Herbert Mead, I maintain that we need an account of sociality that highlights its communicative dimension and that will allow us to critically and ethically evaluate political theory and practice. Ultimately I root a conception of democracy in a view of the normative ramifications of human communication that I call ‘universalist perspectivalism.’ This formulation highlights the simultaneous commitment to (1) a rootedness in perspectives that forecloses the possibility of transcending all perspectives in order to attain an aperspectival standpoint and (2) a robust conception of universality that allows us to attain a critical and normative perspective on legitimacy claims. I argue that the communicative dimension of human sociality involves implicit appeals to universality as openness to an indefinite number of perspectives and contexts; and this can only be adequately translated into the political realm via a conception of cosmopolitan democracy, meaning a conception of democratic legitimation that goes beyond the bounds of territorially-defined nation-states to take into account the interests of all affected by political decisions. The democratic ideal itself consists in the freedom of individuals to criticize and work to reform the social order; as well as the subjection of the collective coordination of human social life to the constraint of legitimation via the input, evaluation, and interplay of the claims, interests, and perspectives of all subject to its decisions. ▼ In The Self Unenclosed, I argue that pragmatist ideas of selfhood, action, and futurity guided Progressive Era writers as they pursed an ambitious goal: to expand readers' ability act with a sense of the common, yet to be realized, good in mind. By reimagining the self as an effect of interdependent action, the writers I treat aimed to augment democratic, rational control over institutions and social practices that would otherwise, feared many observes, be left to drift. In particular, I examine how literature reconstructed practices of commemoration, mourning, starting a business, and arranging raced space. Whereas most scholars who write about pragmatism and literature treat pragmatism chiefly as a linguistic and aesthetic strategy or as an antidote to essentialisms, I emphasize pragmatism's history as an aid to social reform. By recovering acts of pragmatist reform, I challenge critical stances that overlook possibilities for creativity that lie within constrained circumstances. After an introduction that lays out how a sense of futurity both structures the actions of the pragmatist social self and makes available a method to write pragmatism's literary history, I show in four chapters how writers changed customarily retrospective acts into opportunities for future-facing action. For Henry James in The American Scene, commemoration at Civil War monuments is marked by an expectancy that James converts into imaginative identification with memorialized Union soldiers as he waits for their ghosts, while William James, in his speech at Augustus Saint-Gaudens' Shaw Memorial, turns his audience's eyes away from the past toward a better civic future. In the second chapter, where I account for the strange epistolary friendship of John Dewey and Claude McKay, I claim that McKay's Banjo retropes resilience as a resource to work through loss. Historicizing ways in which pragmatism mutated to suit specific reform projects in my third and fourth chapters, I read Charlotte Perkins Gilman's Forerunner fiction as a form of what I call literary social work. In the final chapter I demonstrate how in Charles S. Johnson's The Negro in Chicago, the Deweyan idea of "adjustment" abetted Chicago's segregated post-riot racial order, and thus I complicate customary associations between pragmatism and anti-racism. ▼ Dans la foulée des réflexions contemporaines sur l'« individualité post-moderne », ce mémoire propose de retracer la nature dialectique de la subjectivité individuelle en évaluant dans quelle mesure nous pouvons, malgré les distinctions importantes entre leurs perspectives, établir un rapprochement entre le projet spéculatif de Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel et l'analyse de la conduite sociale développée par George Herbert Mead. Constituant chacune des approches ayant rigoureusement insisté sur l'impossibilité de concevoir la subjectivité individuelle hors de l'expérience sociale, nous proposons d'engager une réflexion sur les possibilités théoriques de leur rapprochement. Les deux penseurs, qui exposent de façon analogue la structure de la reconnaissance fondamentale à toute expérience subjective proprement humaine, insistent sur le mouvement intersubjectif par lequel se structure l'intériorité subjective. Depuis les premiers balbutiements de la sociologie, plusieurs ont fait mention du « détour obligé » dans la vie sociale que doit emprunter le sujet humain, afin de se réaliser comme un être réflexif en mesure d'interagir avec le monde qui l'entoure. En exposant les étapes de la réalisation de l'esprit subjectif, Hegel a dévoilé avec précision la dialectique par laquelle l'individu, au sein du rapport de reconnaissance, s'affranchit de sa déterminité naturelle pour se constituer comme une conscience de soi. Près d'un siècle après l'effondrement du système hégélien, par l'intermédiaire de sa psychologie sociale, Mead insistera à son tour sur la dynamique intersubjective fondamentale à la réalisation du sujet. Suivant une approche fondée sur une relecture en termes de complémentarité, la présente réflexion entend montrer la manière par laquelle l'esprit subjectif hégélien trouve chez Mead un prolongement dans le sens d'une théorie pragmatiste de la communication. A presente tese, intitulada A formação do eu em Mead e em Habermas: desafios e implicações à educação, fruto de uma pesquisa de doutoramento em educação, tem por objetivo abordar o tema da formação do eu, enquanto processo de subjetivação e de estabilização de uma identidade pessoal, no contexto do pensamento pós-metafísico, a partir do interacionismo simbólico de George Herbert Mead e da teoria da ação comunicativa de Jürgen Habermas. A investigação também discorre sobre o papel que a escola desempenha nos processos de formação dos sujeitos, especialmente no que tange aos desafios e às implicações decorrentes das posições teóricas dos autores anteriores. Trata-se de um estudo de cunho teórico, no campo da filosofia da educação, que engloba revisão bibliográfica, exposição dos principais conceitos implicados no problema e esforço hermenêutico por situar, compreender e argumentar logicamente a partir das questões e dos conceitos em tela. No decorrer da argumentação é possível perceber que o processo de individuação se dá pela socialização. O mecanismo da comunicação é o princípio estruturante da mente, do self, da identidade do eu e da sociedade humana. A identidade pessoal estrutura-se mediante a internalização das normas e das convenções coletivas, o desenvolvimento progressivo das estruturas internas do eu, processos contínuos de aprendizagem individual e social, processos de descentração e de ganhos de racionalidade em contextos comunicativos e simbólicos. A estabilização de uma identidade pós-convencional, último nível de desenvolvimento ideal da personalidade, pode ser compreendida a partir de um agir com fim cada vez mais universal e da estruturação de um sentido e de uma biografia para a própria existência. Tal classe de identidade abre a possibilidade de um autoentendimento, que permite ao sujeito agir autonomamente e de modo responsável diante de si mesmo, da sociedade e da cultura. A instituição escolar, mediante processos de ensino e de aprendizagem sistemáticos e intencionados, pode contribuir efetivamente na formação do eu e na estruturação de uma identidade pessoal em níveis mais elevados, qualificando os sujeitos a que se apropriem e reconstruam o saber cultural herdado, estabeleçam entendimentos acerca de algo no mundo, coordenem as ações com os demais membros do grupo social e participem de processos de interação e de socialização individuadores. Tal contribuição será mais qualificada à medida que as ações pedagógicas, efetivadas no ambiente escolar, delinearem-se sob os pressupostos da interação, do diálogo e da participação, respeitando a multiplicidade das dimensões do humano e objetivando a formação de sujeitos competentes na dimensão estética, expressiva, interpretativa, moral, social e discursiva.

▼ In this thesis I examine the current state of relations in Cambodia between individuals, their families and elite forces, and the direction taken by traditional spirit beliefs since the introduction of Western capital and education. I argue that Cambodia has been in the control of elites at least since the days of the Khmer kings from the 7th century, and that the didactic elements of Theravada Buddhist literature have been a critically important controlling factor. In my novel and my exegesis I examine the concept of the ‘ideal woman’ at the centre of the Buddhist social model and discuss the radical changes visited upon young women since the introduction of internationalism. In my exegesis the sociological theories of Max Weber and George Herbert Mead are used to show how Cambodian peasant life has been sustained for centuries by the Symbolic Interaction of individuals with family and Theravada Buddhism; I argue that in the last twenty years there has been a shift towards Marxian Conflict Theory. In my novel the advent of capital and factories has been followed by unionism, which I dramatise through the struggle of industrial garment workers for wage improvements. A related romance between an Australian man and Cambodian woman links the reader to an examination of the modern Cambodian family and the state of traditional spirit beliefs. My exegesis places my novel in the context of modern literature written by outsiders about Cambodia, and my interviews with five Cambodian writers show the confines still placed by Government on writing by Cambodians. I look at the impact of new capital on the lives of young women in the garment factories and examine the various types of relationship between Western men and Cambodian women. Drawing on my own interviews with forty young Cambodians, I argue that the new generation of young people has retained family ties and many traditional beliefs despite new materialism, Western education and often physical separation from their families. Despite outside influence the family remains strong for now and, in my novel at least, Western culture can bend to the Cambodian way.

▼ Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan omantunnon luonnetta ja puolustetaan moraalipsykologista teoriaa omastatunnosta tilivelvollisuutena yleistetylle toiselle. Moraalipsykologista tilivelvollisuusteoriaa yhdistetään sosiaalisen minuuden teorian kanssa. Tilivelvollisuusteorian mukaan moraalinen vastuullisena pitäminen perustuu sosiaalista vuorovaikutusta sääteleviin reaktiivisiin asenteisiin. Stephen Darwall ja Brendan Dill korostavat erityisesti moitteen ja syyllisyyden asenteiden roolia moraalipsykologiassa. Näistä syyllisyys on itseen refleksiivisesti toisen persoonan näkökulmasta kohdistettua moitetta. Tilivelvollisuusteoria joutuu olettamaan, että omantunnon kannalta keskeinen toisen persoonan näkökulma on samanaikaisesti myös yksilön ensimmäisen persoonan ja moraaliyhteisön kollektiivinen näkökulma. Näiden omantunnon edellyttämien näkökulmien päällekkäisyyteen etsitään tässä tutkielmassa selvennystä sosiaalisen minuuden teoriasta. Yleistetty toinen on George Herbert Meadin sosiaalisen minuuden teoriaan liittyvä käsite, joka voidaan tulkita sellaiseksi psykologiseksi edustukseksi sosiaalisen kokonaisuuden näkökulmasta, joka luo yksilölle yhtenäisen käsityksen itsestään, eli objektiminän. Itseys voidaan laajassa merkityksessään ymmärtää eri psyykenrakenteiden vuoropuheluna, jossa subjektiminä samaistuu yleistetyn toisen välityksellä objektiminään. Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan lähemmin tätä itsen dynamiikkaa ja yleistetyn toisen roolia siinä. Yleistetyn toisen käsitettä verrataan myös sen sukulaiskäsitteisiin Adam Smithin puolueettomaan tarkkailijaan ja Sigmund Freudin superegoon. Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan, kuinka yleistetyn toisen ja laajemmin sosiaalisen minuuden teorian yhdistäminen tilivelvollisuusteoriaan täydentää näiden molempien teorioiden käsityksiä omantunnon luonteesta. Se tarjoaa selityksen sille, kuinka refleksiivinen näkökulma, josta yksilö peilaa itseään moraalisesti, on samanaikaisesti sekä toisen, itsen että moraaliyhteisön näkökulma. Tutkielmassa puolustetaan kantaa, että käsiteltyjen teorioiden yhdistäminen tarjoaa hedelmällisen tavan ymmärtää omantunnon psykologiaa ja myös avaa tutkimusta kiinnostaviin suuntiin.

▼ The thesis investigated the social and symbolic significance of acquiring a 'music education' through the taking of piano tuition and external public music examinations. It aimed to discover why the learning of the piano and the certification of musical attainment are so prevalent and revered among Malaysian music students. Its purpose was to unravel the socio-cultural raison d'etre of this approach to music education through the creation of a metatheoretical schema, which is premised upon the theories of symbolic interactionist, George Herbert Mead, music analyst, Heinrich Schenker and social theorist, George Ritzer. Central to the argument in this instance is the symbolic significance associated with the act of playing the piano. The investigation attempted to determine if this 'act' conveyed a symbolic meaning that is peculiar to a specific cultural vista. It further examined the degree to which this practice represented both a validation and a sense of conformity to social norms in the continuity and stability of an expanding middle class society in Malaysia. The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) is the largest of the five main external public music examination boards that operate in Malaysia. Since 1948, over one million candidates have enrolled for ABRSM examinations in Malaysia and a team of approximately thirty ABRSM examiners visit Malaysia for three months every year. The majority of the candidates are pianists. Given such large numbers of piano candidates, one might expect a healthy development of musical talent in the country with aspiring pianists eager to demonstrate their musical prowess. However, this does not seem to be the case. On the contrary, there appears to be a curious lacuna between the growing number of students who enrol for external public music examinations and the seemingly lack of interest in public music making and the honing of general musicianship skills. The thesis hence examined the symbolic meaning of this socio-rausicological phenomena.

▼ This thesis provides a sociological understanding of how conventional knowledge of sexuality negates the identity formation of black gay men in contemporary South Africa. It investigates the coming out experiences of six black gay men in order to reveal the disjunctures between being black and being gay. The theoretical formation of disjuncture is pursued through examining a number of sociological, historical, psychoanalytical, and feminist approaches to identity, sexuality, and society; featuring specifically the theories of George Herbert Mead, Michel Foucault, and Judith Butler. The chosen research paradigm is symbolic interactionism, postulating both „pragmatist‟ and „empiricist‟ trends that lead to both interactionist and structuralist forms of argumentation. The interactionist approach to sexuality is central to the deconstruction of sexual conventions. It involves conceptualising modern sexuality in the landscapes of African colonial history and the global gay and lesbian movement. The prescribed literature on homosexuality is thus reviewed in conjunction with the South African gay and lesbian struggle, so as to spawn themes and perspectives for conducting life story interviews. The use of the life story interview favours the participants‟ own view of the studied phenomenon, yet aims to depict the structural influence on homosexual identification. Following the qualitative research tradition, the data analysis is based on the interpretation of narratives. It illustrates interpersonal relationships and microscopic experiences that lead to the self-acceptance and self-actualisation of homosexuality. Within these processes, various disjunctures that exist between the cultural sanction of lifestyle and individual choice, between parents and children, between religious belief and personal desires, and between gender identity and sexual orientation are disclosed. The findings are associated with the historical transformation of masculinity in South Africa, sex role performance, and the heterosexualisation of desire. The solution to the proposed research problem is discussed through concepts of socialisation and gender conformity. Advisors/Committee Members: Drewett, Michael.

The developed work intends to contribute for the understanding of an author/character of the social psychology. We analyzed and we added knowledge about George Herbert Mead and the unfoldings of his psychosocial theory. For this purpose we worked in two basic pathways: first, through the social approach of the psychologys history, we confronted Meads life with moments of constitution of the psychology at his time, placing in projection central aspects of his dialogue not always identified. We correlated the history of Mead with social subjects, politics, economical and scientific of his time; information on what happened in the plan of the interpersonals relationships at the time he was elaborating his theory, as well as his connections with practices and specific cultural values were mediated. The second path elapses from an incursion that goes through a thematic concerning to the Meadelians studies, for what we prioritized the sociologists Peter Bergers and Thomas Luckmanns works and of the philosopher Jürgen Habermas. It is then intended to contribute to the history of the social psychology and to diffuse the Meadelians scientific concepts, turning them more accessible to the specialists of the social psychology

O trabalho desenvolvido pretende contribuir para a compreensão de um autor/personagem da psicologia social. Analisamos e acrescemos conhecimento sobre George Herbert Mead e os desdobramentos de sua teoria psicosocial. Para este propósito trabalhamos em duas vertentes básicas: primeiro, através da abordagem social em história da psicologia, confrontamos a vida de Mead com momentos de constituição da psicologia à sua época, colocando em relevo aspectos centrais desta interlocução nem sempre identificados. Correlacionamos a história de Mead com questões sociais, políticas, econômicas e científicas de sua época; informações sobre o que se passava no plano das relações interpessoais ao tempo em que elaborava sua teoria, assim como suas conexões com práticas e valores culturais específicos foram contemplados. A segunda vertente decorre de uma incursão na literatura que perpassa por temáticas concernentes aos estudos meadianos, para o que priorizamos os trabalhos dos sociólogos Peter Berger e Thomas Luckmann e do filósofo Jürgen Habermas. Pretende-se assim contribuir para a história da psicologia social e difundir os conceitos científicos meadianos, tornando-os mais acessíveis aos estudiosos da psicologia social

▼ Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan pragmatistifilosofi George Herbert Meadin (1863–1931) ajattelua ja siinä erityisesti minän ja toisen suhdetta. Mead esitti pitkälle kehitetyn teorian siitä, kuinka ihminen tulee omaksi itsekseen vain suhteessa muihin. Yksi tutkimuksen tavoite on tarkastella Meadiä juuri filosofina, joskin tämän kytkökset erityistieteisiin ja erityisesti sosiaalipsykologiaan ovat työssä läsnä. Tutkimuksessa Meadin ajattelu asetetaan kulttuurihistorialliseen kontekstiin. Tutkimuksen näkökulma on sosiaalisuudessa ja vuorovaikutuksessa. Meadille ihmisten välinen sosiaalisuus ja vuorovaikutus ovat erityinen osa tämän paljon laajemmaksi käsittämää sosiaalisuutta ja vuorovaikutusta. Sosiaalisuuden periaate vallitsee niin fysiikan, elämän kuin tietoisuuden alueella. Mead tutki tietoisuutta ilman metafyysistä perustaa, kuten oletettuja sielua ja mieltä. Hän tutki tietoisuutta osana empiiristä, objektiivista, maailmaa ja sitoi sen synnyn konkreettisiin toimintoihin. Meadin sosiaalisen toiminnan teoria on teoria tietoisuuden synnystä. Ensiksi Mead määrittää tietoisuuden itselleen toiseksi tulemiseksi. Toiseksi Mead ymmärsi, että vuorovaikutussuhteessa minä on jo toisen näkökulmasta toinen ja jos minä voi ottaa toisen aseman suhteessa itseensä, tietoisuus tulee selitetyksi. Mieli ja tietoisuus, kuten minuus ja subjektiviteettikaan, eivät Meadin katsannossa ole syntymässä annettuja, tilallisia, entiteettejä, vaan vuorovaikutusprosessissa kehittyviä ja symbolisia. Minässä on (ainakin) kaksi keskustelijaa, joista toinen on spontaani toimija (I) ja toinen edustaa sisäistettyjä yhteiskunnallisia konventioita (me). Nämä minän olomuodot ovat muuttuvia: ensimmäinen kommentoi ja kyseenalaistaa jälkimmäistä sekä keksii uutta. Sosiaalisen toiminnan teoriaan perustuu myös merkitsevän symbolin käsite. Merkityskin on Meadille intersubjektiivinen ja dialoginen. Se sisältää vähintään kaksi eri perspektiiviä. Toisen normatiivisen näkökulman ottaminen on lähtökohta identiteetin synnylle. Kun yksilö laajentaa näkökulmaksi koko ryhmänsä ja yhteisönsä toimintaodotukset ja aina laajemman yleistetyn toisen näkökulman, lopulta saavutetaan normien ymmärryksen taso. Tunnustuksen käsitteellä kuvataan intersubjektiivista suhdetta, jossa yksilöstä tulee hyväksytty yhteisönsä jäsen yleistetyn toisen normit omaksuen. Vastavuoroinen tunnustus ylläpitää minuutta. Tunnustuksen teema ei ole filosofiassa uusi. Erityisesti G. W. F Hegel ennen Meadiä ja Charles Taylor tämän jälkeen ovat esittäneet näkemyksensä tunnustuksesta. Intersubjektiivinen tunnustus on luonteeltaan eettistä. Tutkielmaa jäsentäviä kysymyksiä on kaksi. Ensimmäinen koskee minän ja toisen suhdetta. Minkälainen se on Meadin ajattelemana? Ovatko minä ja toinen jossain ensisijaisuusjärjestyksessä? Minkälainen on yksilön ja yhteiskunnan välinen suhde? Toinen kysymys on, minkälaista etiikkaa johtaa siitä, miten minän ja toisen suhde ymmärretään. Mead pitää toista ja myös yhteiskuntaa ensisijaisena yksilöön nähden. ▼ Uppsatsens utgångspunkt är att perspektivet utgör en psykosocial länk mellan individ och omvärld. Med grund i Henry Montgomerys perspektivmodell, som bland annat framhåller hur fakta och värderingar är intimt förbundna i social perception, förs ett resonemang kring perspektivets socialpsykologiska förankring i mellanmänskliga sammanhang. Modellens element subjekt, objekt och mental position diskuteras systematiskt utifrån George Herbert Meads perspektivteoretiska ansats samt Alan Page Fiskes socialitetsteori. Syftet är främst att visa på perspektivets deskriptiva och evaluativa konstitution, dess sociala grund och kontextberoende. Tanken är att Meads resonemang fungerar som en formell teoretisk grund för subjektet och dennes kommunikativt grundade intersubjektivitet, genom perspektivtagandet via symbolbruk och den generaliserade andra, emedan Fiskes ansats tar fasta på en bestämd social differentiering genom socialitetsformer vilket i sig utgör fundamentet för värderingars sociala förankring samt människors socialitet i en mer substantiell mening. Teorierna ses som komplementära genom sina universella anspråk och diskussionen mynnar slutligen ut i begreppet socialitetsperspektiv utifrån en social differentiering av den generaliserade andra. Tyngdpunkten ligger här på subjektet som aktör och tanken är att var gång ett socialt perspektiv intas inom ramen för den generaliserade andra så görs det alltid utifrån någon av socialitetsformerna som var och en dessutom antas utgöra perspektivets gräns och variation. Inom ramen för en mellanmänsklig kontext antas därför alltid subjektet uppfatta ett objekt utifrån en bestämd mental social position, ett bestämt socialitetsperspektiv, i social handling och att individens sociala jag fyller en avgörande funktion i en sådan kontextbunden perception. Perspektivframträdandet diskuteras slutligen med grund i Montgomerys perspektivansats och Joop van der Pligts tre attributionsteoretiska slutsatser om hur interna och externa orsaksfaktorer kan korrelera med deskriptiva och evaluativa aspekter i en social kontext. Resonemanget pekar på så vis ut specifika tendenser till att ett visst perspektiv intas till förmån för ett annat beroende på interna och externa orsaker i ett mellanmänskligt sammanhang.

▼ Recent scholarship which addresses the presence in George Herbert's poetry of both a rhetoric of courtesy and of Christian piety generally regards the two as incompatible; scholars have sought to show that Herbert renounced this courtly rhetoric entirely, incorporated it somewhat reluctantly into his poetry, or was unable to suppress its global influence on his poetic method. I argue that what previous authors have neglected to consider when accounting for the relationship of courtly rhetoric to Herbert's piety is the analogous function easing anxiety has in both courtesy theory and Reformed approaches to pastoral care. To this end, I aim to demonstrate that Herbert (who was himself a parson) incorporates into his major work, The Temple, a method of easing anxiety that Calvinism obviates: how to gauge and improve one's "rank" or status with regard to election or reprobation. Calvinism, specifically the "experimental predestinarian" tradition in England, transposes matters of agency from the sphere of works to that of faith, to the act of discovering evidence of one's election by close scrutiny of one's disposition toward believing. This, I claim, is similar to courtesy theory's aim to provide a metric for self-advancing conduct. I make the case that the overlap between the therapeutic functions of both predestinarian theology and courtesy theory can be located in the argument for aesthetic discernment found in George Puttenham's poetry manual/courtesy book, The Art of English Poesy. Rather than presenting rules of decorum, Puttenham presents extensive examples that, if one is able to discern from them rules of conduct, argue tacitly for the reader's the requisite faculty of discernment. By presenting a large number of elaborate poetic conceits, I believe that Herbert engages in a process that, by thematizing extensively in his poetry the complexities of Christian conduct, argues in turn for a similarly ingrained faculty of discernment; the ability to discern the "correct" rendering of doctrine in Herbert's poetry functions as evidence of election. Herbert thus works to ameliorate anxieties surrounding matters of election by integrating a pastoral role into his lyrics not wholly at odds with matters of self-advancement. Early modern devotional poets understood a distinct relationship of remembrance between God and David in the Hebrew Psalms and incorporated it into their writings. My dissertation argues that the Hebrew Psalms articulate a relationship of remembrance between God and the psalmist, which consists of two separate actions. The psalmist first remembers God’s most sacred name, Yahweh, which transforms and renews his understanding of God’s character. Second, God uses a physical sign, an ̓ot, to show His remembrance and love for the psalmist and the Israelites. Perceiving that these remembrances were conveyed through signs, Philip and Mary Sidney, John Donne, and George Herbert used the language of “marking” to capture the way in which God and the psalmist of the Hebrew Psalms remembered one another. These early modern poets either explained the first part of this relationship in the Hebrew Psalms, as Donne does in his Sermon upon Psalm 6:1, or they modeled it in their poetry. Philip and Mary Sidney’s psalm translations highlight the significance of Yahweh’s spoken and written name Jehovah, while Herbert’s poems “Jesu” and “Love-joy” break apart Jesus’ name similar to the way in which Kabbalists treat the name Yahweh. These poets also depicted the second part of this relationship: how God remembered them through signs. They portrayed these signs in ways that resembled the memorial signs of Hebrew Psalms 137 and 139. The meditation upon the marks of God’s name—either though writing it, explaining it, or breaking the name apart—was a path to remembering God and Jesus as newly merciful and loving for the Sidneys, Donne, and Herbert. Just as their poetry meditated upon the marks of God’s name, it likewise showed the marking remembrance of God, who marked their speakers in various ways to display His love for them.

▼ This thesis discusses the theme of spiritual sacrifice in George Herbert's "The Temple". In terms of poetic content the study mainly assesses the relative importance, for Herbert of three qualities of spiritual sacrifice — repentance, dedication, and praise — and examines the significance, of Christ's Sacrifice and the role of the heart in spiritual sacrifice. Although Herbert's "Dedication" to his work suggests that each, poem, is a sacrifice, the study seeks to show, how, in addition to content, several, poems, in their combination, of language and form demonstrate, the sacrificial, act itself. Along, with a treatment, of this theme, discussion of the poems reveals the way in which motifs and images of sacrifice, recur, in many poems. Chapter One considers the sanctions and stipulations of offering spiritual sacrifices and the nature of the sacrifices themselves, through a study of Old and Hew. Testament, scripture. A sampling of homiletic and exegetical sources especially contemporary to Herbert, points out the prophetic and typological concerns relevant to the subject. Chapter Two begins the study of Herbert's poetry with, an explication of the first, several poems, with, particular attention paid to the way in which "The Sacrifice" provides a focal point, for the poems which, follow. Chapter Three surveys a selection of poems scattered throughout The Temple which specifically use the language and imagery of sacrifice. This study of spiritual sacrifice in the poetry concludes that, divine ministry initiates and provides assistance in the offering of the sacrifices, and that the spiritual, sacrifices arise from a heart; dealt with by the Spirit of God. Sacrifices characteristically express the poet's sense of dedication, and praise, along with repentance. Although these qualities receive varying emphases in the poetry, as a general premise it can he said that sin. must be confessed and a sense of fellowship with God restored before expressions of dedication and praise can properly and acceptably be offered. Some poems in their combination of language and form demonstrate or suggest the sacrificial act itself, particularly regarding the "pattern" in, which sacrificial qualities are considered. As a general conclusion spiritual sacrifice expresses a way in which the Christian, responds to the reception of divine Love and Grace. The offering of, spiritual sacrifices should and does constitute a regular activity in the life of the typical believer.

▼ The critical neglect of the neo-Latin poetry of English writers, particularly those of the Renaissance and seventeenth century, presents a difficulty for those students interested in understanding the entire career of an Anglo-Latin author. In Herbert's case, his neo-Latin poetry presents very distinctive aspects of his literary character and techniques, a knowledge of which may enable future readers to better appreciate The Temple, Herbert's major English work. This thesis deals with Passio Discerpta (The Events of the Passion) and Lucus (The Sacred Grove) in particular, and demonstrates their firm place in the tradition of the sacred epigram. In order to form a clearer impression of the tradition and Herbert's work within it and of the contemporary models and sources upon which he drew, Chapter Two surveys briefly the epigrammatic conventions and religious background from which the sacred epigram derived. The differences between the epigrammatic style of Martial and of The Greek Anthology are discussed as well as the similarities between the satiric and the sacred epigram. Chapter Three presents a comparison with other poets of the period working within the same convention, most notably Crashaw, but also such writers as John Saltmarsh, Francis Thynne, and John Pyne. This comparison shows Herbert's superiority to previous writers in his use of the epigram for religious subject-matter. Herbert's skilful use of the conventions of the sacred epigram as a means of expressing his own deep religious feeling is demonstrated in the critical studies of Passio Discerpta and Lucus which form Chapters Four and Five, the core of this thesis. These chapters deal with the poems under the headings of arrangement, imagery, and narrative voice. The analysis of these various aspects reveals significant links between the arrangement of the poems within each volume and the imagery Herbert uses to express his themes. The thematic unity, the conscious selectivity of subject-matter, and the skilful use of the narrative voice as an integral part of the rhetorical structure are shown. On the basis of this study, Herbert's sacred epigrams as exemplified by Passio Discerpta and Lucus are seen as forming aesthetic landmarks in that tradition, and as providing a new perspective from which students of The Temple may understand more fully Herbert's entire literary career.

▼ Mysticism is simply religious experience in its highest manifestations. In Christian mysticism, love is the distinguishing factor; its focal point is the Incarnation. The mystic worships God both In His Transcendence and In His Immanence, his emphasis usually being on one or other of these aspects of His nature. In the seventeenth century, two main mystical traditions existed. One was the orthodox Catholic tradition; the other was more unorthodox in character, stemming from the philosophy of Hermes Trismegistes. The mystic way consists of the five-fold path beginning in Awakening, followed by Purgation, Illumination, the Dark Night of the Soul, and climaxed by Union. The mystic life itself is not vague or escapist: it is a life deified in order that it may be dedicated. Contemplation and activity go hand in hand. Mystical and poetical experience can be differentiated by the direction which each experience takes: the poet returns from his experience with his poem, whereas the mystic pushes on to the fuller vision of God. Turning specifically to George Herbert, I believe he was never fully awakened in the mystical sense; hence, his subsequent experience cannot be considered truly mystical. Nevertheless, there are points of reference and similarities between Herbert and the mystics. His Purgation, however, lacked the fullness of the mystic's experience, for it lacked the most significant attribute of the purgative state, the stimulation of the will. A sense of Illumination, moreover, is never sustained in Herbert. Rarely does he express joy at God's presence. Indeed, he was most like the mystic in his expression of despair. Thus the peace he came to exemplify in his life at Bernerton is truly remarkable in the light of the suffering revealed in his poems. The sense of harmony and peace he ultimately achieved came not through inner peace but through triumph over constant turmoil and despair. Henry Vaughan, on the other hand, experienced, I believe, a true mystic Awakening, accepting the obligations implicit in it, and undergoing, as a consequence, a certain degree of Purgation. His deepest suffering was closely linked with the persecution of the church. His Illumination is best understood through his approach to nature. His treatment of light imagery in nature, however, tends to be misleading in an assessment of his mysticism. I believe that the poems which deal most successfully with light are really philosophical rather than mystical, and that his Illumination, or vision, was essentially that of the poet and not that of the mystic. The vision he captured is, nevertheless, one of the fullest and loveliest to be found in our English poetry. Both Herbert- and Vaughan sought to praise their Maker through the medium of their art. They were deeply spiritual poets though neither can be considered a mystic in the full sense of the word.
