▼ Festivals are an adventure of the emotional and physical senses and can create unforgettable, exciting and thrilling memories of unfamiliar and unique experiences. With music festivals in particular, there is an additional emphasis on the chance to experience live music by often idolised musicians within a temporary community of shared musical interests. However, whilst a music festival may attract visitors through advertising an attractive and appealing line-up of popular acts, this far from guarantees a happy customer. There are many other elements that contribute to and impact upon the experience of the festival-goer (Morgan, 2008: 83). If these elements are managed well, this can result in benefits for both the consumer, through positive emotional and cognitive experiences, and for the organisation through repeat custom, recommendations and increased sales. However, if the festival fails and disappoints the consumer, this in turn can generate negative perceptions and an undesired reputation, hence reducing future attendance and sales. Thus, in order for festival organisers to achieve organisational success, they must respond and react to the needs and desires of their festival-goers. Therefore, this thesis aims to provide an exploratory analysis of the festival-goer and their experience at UK music festivals. More specifically, it examines who the festival-goers are and what experiences they seek. In doing so, the study aims to develop an experience value model, depicting the relationship between festival-goer characteristics and the value of experience attributes at UK music festivals. This research adopts a pragmatist philosophy and mixed-methods approach which is carried out across three phases: (i) interviews with festival-organisers; (ii) an online quantitative survey of festival-goers; and (iii), on-site interviews with festival-goers. The research results are analysed using appropriate methods including thematic coding, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and linear regression. The results identify common socio-demographic and psychographic characteristics amongst festival-goers to UK music festivals, whilst also indicating a distinction between those at rock or niche, and pop or mainstream festivals. The value of experience attributes is identified in seven areas: music, other entertainment, services, engagement, added value, ethics and image, all of which may influence the overall experience. The festival atmosphere is the most important experiential attribute; however, this research also demonstrates the significance of engagement and co-creation throughout the festival-goers' journey. Most importantly, the results show that festival-goers' socio-demographic and psychographic characteristics determine the value of experience attributes. Therefore, this research provides an original contribution to both theory and practice through the development of an experience value model, and by providing critical information to festival organisers so that it may inform the strategic management of their festivals.

▼ Sporting events provide a way for people to come together and grow. However, organizing an
event can be very challenging, therefore the goal of this project is to learn about running events and to create a resource for others to use to help them run an
event. To do so, I volunteered at three different events and experienced first-hand the challenges involved.
These events included the Nordic Business Forum, Kalevan Kisat and Finlandia Marathon. Based on my own experiences and from surveying other volunteers I found that most of volunteers are happy with the training sessions and their roles at the events, but there are some who are not that satisfied with their experience. Volunteers are one of the key resources in an
event so to successfully prepare volunteers to be the best at their job, the
event manager needs to be able to create a good experience for all the participants.
From these findings, I create a recipe for success in running an
event by comparing the process to baking a cake. As you bake the cake your four ingredients for success are flour, egg, sugar and baking powder. With these four ingredients you can bake a good simple cake. When it comes to
event management there are also four ingredients needed. First, in the beginning you need a plan which includes a vision and a timetable. Second, you need to delegate work load. Third, you need to find a way to communicate with the teams in order to keep up with the team and to find out how you are progressing along the way. The last cake ingredient is the baking powder which makes the cake rise. This is the
event-specific ingredient which will make your
event a marathon, track and field competition, or a conference type of training. As you implement your plan and mix ingredients together, you’ll be able to adjust the plan along the way which will lead your team to the desired destination. After the cake is baked you have the basics done and you can cut it in pieces and start filling the layers. This part will help your team to do everything they can to prepare the
event for the participants. Usually the last day is the
event day. This is the day when you’ll be busy since just like the cake needs to be decorated to look desirable, the
event needs to look good to. The best part though is to surprise the participants, meaning that as an
event manager you have exceeded their expectations. When the
event has come to its end, there is time for the evaluation. Just like after a birthday party you may have some left overs, this is the time to check what went well and what are the areas needed improving. Then, as you become a good “baker” of a basic cake, you can start to mix things up and try some new variations of the cake. The manual of creating an
event goes through the very basics of
event management. The weakness of the manual is that it has not been tested so there is no proof that it will save your
event. However, it will give simple ideas about what kind of things to take into consideration when planning, implementing and executing an
event.

Agile work methods evolved from developing software in the IT industry. The general opinion was that the industry needed a more flexible way of attacking different duties and the work methods in projects. There was a need to create a way of working that would let them change the original plan of the project if the conditions changed during the process. From this need, agile work methods evolved. In event projects different aspects must work together for the result to be as successful as possible in the IT industry, the project manager needs to be on his/her toes and be prepared for the conditions to…

▼ ArenAPoort is an area in Amsterdam’s Zuidoost (Southeast) district, with multiple functions including working, shopping, and entertainment. Most importantly, it is an event area with three famous venues: Johan Cruijff ArenA, Ziggo Dome, and AFAS Live. Hundreds of events are held in this area every year. During the event period, mobility can always draw a concern. The Operational Mobility Center (OMC) takes charge of the mobility flows, aiming at improving the mobility situation during events in the ArenAPoort. They are now collecting traffic data to help make predictions on traffic situations of future events and to reactively take precautions. This brings the consideration of whether there are other ways of using the data, for example, making use of data to intervene in visitors’ behavior. In collaboration with the OMC, this master thesis aims to improve the mobility situation around the ArenAPoort during events by making use of data to change visitors’ mobility behavior. The final outcome is an application that can help visitors to plan their event experience in the ArenAPoort. The project process follows the double-diamond model. It starts with an introduction of the project background, including the context, the organization OMC, and a project brief. After figuring out the background and having the project brief, four research questions are put forward, aiming to have a deeper understanding of the context, gain an empathy with the target group, and seek for theoretical support. Several research activities were taken, including desk research and field research. According to research results, a design goal is formulated, together with design guidelines. Next, a series of co-creation sessions were performed for ideation. Based on the ideation results, 13 initial ideas are generated, and after two rounds of evaluation, ideas were summarized and integrated. The next step is to conceptualize the ideas to a complete concept. During this process, the information structure and the user flow of the concept are defined, together with wireframes of key screens. Evaluation is conducted to assess the concept. Based on evaluation results, a final round of iteration was conducted, and the design is finalized. Six end-users and two experts from the OMC took part in the evaluation of the final design. By summarizing and concluding evaluation results, overall conclusions of the project are drawn, together with the project limitation, future recommendation, and a personal reflection.

▼ Increasingly in the information age, overwhelming quantities of available data has brought about opportunities as well as difficulties. Data analysis is of considerable importance to finding interesting patterns, discovering useful information and making decisions accordingly.
Event data has unique characteristics including temporal dependencies, high flow rate and huge volume, which makes it more difficult to analyse than other data types. Unlike data analysts working in large companies that have IT staff and expensive software infrastructure, those working in the research sector find it more difficult to efficiently manage
event data analysis by themselves. User-driven rule
management is a particular challenge especially when analysis rules increase in size and complexity over time. This thesis addresses these problems by proposing a new architecture called EP-RDR aimed at enabling data analysts, with no IT experience, to manage their
event data analysis. EP-RDR enables complex
event processing and facilitates user-driven rule set evolution according to changing requirements. The architecture leverages
event processing system (EPS) technology with a rule-based method called Ripple-Down Rules (RDR). EP-RDR has two main components: an RDR component playing the role of managing the
event processing logic and of supporting incremental rule insertion that enables data analysts to define and add rules by themselves, and an EPDaaS (
Event Pattern Detection as a Service) component that can invoke any EPS so that data analysts are able to conduct
event processing without concern about which EPS to use. To facilitate the interoperability between components in EP-RDR, this thesis also proposes an
Event Data Modelling Framework (EDMF) to assist in building data models for any application of EP-RDR. EDMF consists of an
Event Data Meta-Model and its associated Operational Guidelines. Any data model built based on EDMF allows
event pattern types to be defined, abstracting existing
event and
event pattern occurrence representation formats in a consistent manner. Finally, to evaluate the proposed new method, a prototype has been implemented and applied on real-life scenarios involving financial market data pre-processing. This case study shows that the proposed method effectively satisfies requirements of
event data analysis, namely feasibility and interoperability, the capability of complex
event processing, and the capability of user-driven rule set evolution.

▼ Ice
event for KalPa family project in Kuopio started in Oct. 2012 with a request from KalPa Hockey Oy. The ice
event was organized in season 2011-2012 for the first time and KalPa wanted to continue the tradition for season 2012-2013.
The main objective of the
event was to establish KalPa’s communality brand by utilizing
event marketing and user-oriented design. KalPa also wanted the
event to develop and see improvement in effectiveness of planning,
event activities, and communication between the members of the organizing team and all the stakeholders. The target amount of attendees was 2000.
The
event was fairly successful in establishing the brand. Planning and communication between the organizing team and the stakeholders improved. Development of
event activities was only partly successful, because activities on ice and two of the new activities did not work in a desirable manner. The
event attracted 1500 people.
Well implemented liaison with volunteers and stakeholders probably affected positively to the overall atmosphere of the
event. Attendees that valued the community involvement, most likely had more positive image of KalPa’s brand. Communication improved likely because the
event manager worked inside of the organization, communication happened in time, and instructions were clearer. Planning was enhanced due to more detailed agenda, more omprehensive task allocation, and better documentation. The one in charge of the ice activities did not take responsibility and the instructions were not prepared for the job. KalPa news quiz did not appeal attractive enough and the space for skill track with mini sticks was inadequate. Overlapping
event, low-budget marketing and limited
event theme could have affected negatively the amount of attendees.

▼ Sport events have played a pivotal role in the regeneration of economies and communities. Furthermore, major events have been used as a tool for economic, social, political, and cultural development for cities. The potential claims gained from hosting lead countries to bid for major sport events, sometimes disregarding the costs and overestimating the benefits. In this regard, the potential outcomes are taken for granted, as if they were an intrinsic attribute of the sport product. Due to the ephemeral lifespan of sport events and the escalating costs related to hosting, Chalip (2004) called for a shift of paradigm, from impact to leverage, in the study of
event and tourism
management. By strategically planning for desired outcomes, using the events as a means to focus on the community, host destinations could achieve tangible and intangible benefits well beyond the
event's completion date. The underlying discourse also acknowledges that in order to sustain outcomes and counteract the temporal boundaries of sport events, a series of interrelated events, encompassed within an
event portfolio, are key to capitalize on economic and social issues to in order prolong the benefits for host destinations. This report puts into perspective the different challenges faced by Lima, Peru and its organizing committee in the preparation of the 2019 Pan-American Games. Based on secondary sources of evidence, if the continental competition is not put to the service of the city of Lima, with a mindset shift to
event leverage, the
event outcomes will be nominal and the benefits will not exceed the cost of hosting. To maximize the desired goals proposed by the Peruvian organizing committee, two
event leverage frameworks are presented as a means to implement Lima's Pan-American Plan: Chalip's (2004) economic leverage framework, and O'Brien and Chalip's (2008) social leverage framework. The purpose of the analysis is to highlight potential avenues to increase the benefits derived from the
event to Lima's local community.

▼ With the increasing growth of cultural events both in Australia and internationally, there has also been an increase in event management studies; in theory and in practice. Although a series of related knowledge and skills required specifically by event managers has already been identified by many researchers (Perry et al., 1996; Getz, 2002 & Silvers et al., 2006) and generic event management models proposed, including ‘project management’ strategies in an event context (Getz, 2007), knowledge gaps still exist in relation to identifying specific types of events, especially for not-for-profit arts events.
For events of a largely voluntary nature, insufficient resources are recognised as the most challenging; including finance, human resources and infrastructure. Therefore, the concepts and principles which are adopted by large scale commercial events may not be suitable for not-for-profit arts events aiming at providing professional network opportunities for artists. Building partnerships are identified as a key strategy in developing an effective event management model for this type of event.
Using the 2008 World Dance Alliance Global Summit (WDAGS) in Brisbane 13-18 July, as a case study, the level, nature and relationship of key partners are investigated. Data is triangulated from interviews with organisers of the 2008 WDAGS, on-line and email surveys of delegates, participant observation and analysis of formal and informal documents, to produce a management model suited to this kind of event.

▼ With the prevalence of intelligent devices, social networks have been playing an increasingly important role in our daily life. Various social networks (e.g., Twitter, Facebook) provide convenient platforms for users to explore the world. In this thesis, we study the problem of multi-perspective analysis of social events detected from social networks. In particular, we aim to make sense of the social events from the following three perspectives: 1) what are these social events about; 2) how do these events evolve along timeline; 3) who are involved in the discussions on these events. We mainly work on two categories of social data: the user-generated contents such as tweets and Facebook posts, and the users' interactions such as the follow and reply behaviours among users. On one hand, the posts reveal valuable information that describes the evolutions of miscellaneous social events, which is crucial for people to understand the world. On the other hand, users' interactions demonstrate users' relationships among each other and thus provide opportunities for analysing the underlying communities behind the social events. However, it is not practical to manually detect social events, monitor event evolutions or profile the underlying communities from the massive amount of social data generated everyday. Hence, how to efficiently and effectively extract, manage and analyse the useful information from the social data for multi-perspective social events understanding is of great importance. The social data is dynamic source of information which enables people to stay informed of what is happening now and who are the active and influential users discussing these social events. For one thing, social data is generated by people worldwide at all time, which may make fast identification of events even before the mainstream media. Moreover, the continuous stream of social data reflects the event evolutions and characterizes the events with changing opinions at different stages. This provides an opportunity to people for timely responses to urgent events. For another, users are often not isolated in social networks. The interactions between users can be utilized to discover the communities who discuss each social event. Underlying community profiling provides answers to the questions like who are interested in these events, and which group of people are the most influential users in spreading certain event topics. These answers deepen our understanding of the social events by considering not only the events themselves but also the users behind these events. The first research task in this thesis is to monitor and index the evolving events from social textual contents. The social data cover a wide variety of events which typically evolve over time. Although event detection has been actively studied, most existing approaches do not track the evolution of events, nor do they address the issue of efficient monitoring in the presence of a large number of events. In this task, we detect events based on the user-generated textual…

Event Portfolio Design: Exploring Strategic Approaches to Major Events in New Zealand

▼ One of the strategies which is increasingly applied by cities across the world in an ever-lasting desire to promote and capitalise on their competitive identity, is the hosting of large-scale events of different genres. In an attempt to become an attractive
event place, many cities have progressed from a random and eclectic choice of events toward the development of portfolios of events.Despite the increasing popularity of an
event portfolio strategy in the literature and among city
event planners, there is a lack of developed theoretical concepts and empirical evidence in this area. To address this gap, a qualitative multiple case study research was conducted in three cities in New Zealand, namely Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin. The thesis explores critical aspects of the portfolio programming. It analyses the rationale behind utilising major events, strategic portfolio approaches, compositional structures of the portfolios in the cities, roles that events can play within a portfolio, design factors that influence events programming, and the development of an overall portfolio synergy. The research is grounded in critical realist ontology and pragmatist epistemology. Critical realism helps to uncover a reality of processes that determine portfolio design. A portfolio of events exists in a real context. It is shaped by real processes of planning and decision-making. Pragmatist epistemology directs this research in two ways. Firstly, pragmatism calls for the application of an action-oriented approach. The research becomes a resource for informing human practices and suggesting possibilities for solving problems in the field of planned events. Secondly, pragmatism admits context-dependence of knowledge. Thus, the research serves as an important source of valuable insights, rather than a cradle of a universal truth. The research methods included semi-structured interviews with
event planners from the city councils? departments and relevant council controlled organisations responsible for major events programming. Related public documents were also analysed to complement the emerged insights from the interviews. Thematic analysis of the collected data was carried out to identify and analyse key research themes. The thesis revealed an interplay of four processes in portfolio design that determine its nature, rationale, compositional variety and synergetic values. These are Imagineering, Approaching, Composing and Synergising. Imagineering directs the creation of a general vision on major events and their role in the construction of a desirable place identity. Approaching guides the elaboration of a strategic framework to utilise major events in accordance with the stated objectives and expected outcomes. Composing focuses on the compositional structure of
event portfolios. Synergising is responsible for the maintenance of an overall balance in a portfolio. The findings of the research make an important contribution to
event studies and
event portfolio theory. The thesis advances an understanding of the strategic role…

▼ Since the first Rugby World Cup (RWC) was held in 1987, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand (NZ), it has evolved into the third largest major international sport competition after the Olympics and the Football World Cup. The RWC returned to NZ in September and October 2011 and was expected to generate a wide range of benefits to and opportunities for the country. With matches occurring across the different NZ regions, the economic benefits were expected to be widespread. However, as host of high profile matches including five pool matches, two quarter-finals, both semi-finals, a bronze medal, and the finals match. Auckland was expected to get the most benefits and opportunities from the RWC 2011. Auckland is the research setting for this study. Specifically, the focus is the CBD-to-Mt Eden area, and surrounding areas. Through reviewing existing academic literature on
event and hospitality
management, it was found that no study had focused on how businesses plan and prepare for a mega-
event. This research looks to answer the specific question “how can hospitality organisations prepare for a mega-
event to maximise the benefits and opportunities?”.
A sequential mixed methods research design was considered the most appropriate technique to answer the research question. The researcher employed interviews (n=14) and a postal questionnaire survey (n=72). The major purpose of this thesis was to investigate, better understand and analyse hospitality organisations’ planning practices for mega-events, through the case of the RWC 2011. Both the qualitative and quantitative research investigated hospitality organisations’ planning practices for the RWC 2011 regarding the marketing mix and human resources
management. The research also identified hospitality organisations’ general expectations during and after the RWC 2011, their opinions on the potential external environmental factors, as well as difficulties or challenges they may have in their planning.
The findings in the qualitative research section provided a comprehensive understanding and enhanced the general knowledge of the research context by collecting rich descriptive data. Further, the qualitative research phase facilitated the design of the questionnaire for the quantitative research stage. The quantitative research collected statistically reliable, valid and accurate data from the large sample size to represent the target population in the study areas. The standardised data and the Mann-Whitney U test allowed the researcher to compare and identify differences in the planning practices between the food and beverage and accommodation sector.
This thesis identified that the majority of the research participants expected the RWC 2011 would increase the numbers of both international and domestic guests, thus generating more revenues during the RWC 2011. There was a smaller number of participants who expected the same benefits after the
event. However, a number of participants expected to improve their business reputation and/or awareness after the RWC 2011.…

▼ Timely access to up-to-date, relevant and the geographically referenced emergency information is considered as the essential requirement of the emergency response. The considerable role of social media in providing a source of timely emergency information and supporting the emergency response activities has been demonstrated during a series of real-world events, such as earthquakes, floods, and terrorist attacks. Among the available social media platforms, Twitter has been an effective way of sharing information and communicating warnings between disaster relief organisations and citizens on the ground during many real-world incidents. However, despite the inherent capability of Twitter in meeting the timeliness requirement, there are major challenges in the identification of event-related tweets as well as the estimation of the actual location of Twitter data.
First of all, finding tweets related to a specific event from tens of thousands of tweets posted every minute is a non-trivial task. The second issue lies in the spatial aspect of Twitter data. Tweets sent from location-enabled devices can be geotagged containing the precise location coordinates. However, only about 1% to 3% of all tweets are geotagged. Systems or tools that rely on geotagging can only benefit from a small fraction of Twitter data, even though there is valuable information in the remaining non-geotagged portion. Accordingly, assessment of Twitter messages to identify the event-related tweets, along with inferring their location with the highest possible accuracy are considered as priority research areas regarding the adoption of Twitter data in emergency response.
To address the above-mentioned challenges, this research was conducted by using Design Science Research Methodology (DSRM) as the overarching research method to develop a framework for adopting Twitter in emergency response. The developed framework aims at the identification of the tweets related to an event of interest within the study area along with inferring their approximate location in a timely manner. The proposed framework for event-relatedness assessment and location inference of Twitter data was successfully implemented into a prototype system and its feasibility was verified through a case study demonstration using a sample dataset of tweets collected during a real-world emergency. The results of the prototype demonstration were used to empirically evaluate the performance of the prototype through the calculation of several performance metrics. The prototype achieved an overall success rate of about 75% in performing both the event-relatedness assessment and location inference of the sample tweets. In the end, the conclusions drawn from the proposed framework and its implementation and evaluation together with the implications for practice and future research were presented.

▼ Current Thesis approaches event and festival attendance as leisure time activity and as special interest tourism. Due to specific elements and characteristics of the event and festival sector, there is great interest in research either from the management perspective or tourism approach. Research focuses on the Greek festival market and demonstrates its specific characteristics. Positive economic, tourism, social and cultural impacts have been well documented by relative literature and a wide range of best practices have been recorded in order to get full advantage from festival implementation. Nevertheless, events and festivals are affected from continuum changes at the economy and society and this fact diversifies their implementation context. Hence, there is a necessity of supply and demand characteristics examination into different time periods and geographical areas. Regarding the theoretical background of this research, a literature analysis on the fields of definition of events, festivals, event and festival tourism is conducted. Additionally, tourism motivation theories, concept of leisure time, event management and event marketing set the appropriate basis for field research. Data was collected from the attendees from three major Greek music festivals and focused on characteristics and segmentation of the audience according to their motives. Factor analysis, Cluster analysis and additional statistic tests were implemented in order to elaborate data. Moreover, interviews with key informants such as academics and event and festival managers were conducted in order to reveal supply and demand side characteristics of festivals and special interest tourism. Results come up with the appropriate context for approaching festivals - especially tourism festivals - by taking into account characteristics, problems and potential which derived from the research. Conclusions highlight the need for planning event and festivals by considering separate groups of attendees according to their specific motives and needs and suggest a theoretical model for understanding the differentiation of repeat visitors’ motives. Finally, practices for planning and management are proposed which are based on specific elements of Greek market and utilize the existing potential for tourism and cultural development.

▼ This paper discusses my Themed
Event Project, Camelot, which also served as my hospitality
management capstone project. With a team of four other hospitality
management students, I planned and executed a creative themed
event surrounding the overarching theme of Medieval times and the Royal court of Camelot. Decorations, food, and entertainment for the
event were based on Medieval culture to create a royal castle experience for guests to dine like kings and queens for the evening. This paper will outline all details of the
event such as floor diagrams, decorations, menu items and entertainment. It will also outline analyses of all
event aspects from the post-
event perspective. Overall, my experience working on this
event exposed me to all aspects of
event management from the planning stage to actual execution months later. This paper will serve as a summary of the
event as well as a representation of what I have learned through this hands-on learning opportunity in the Hart School of Hospitality
Management and the JMU Honors College.

▼ A pavement investment and
management process has a dynamic structure with cause and effect. Better investment decisions for maintenance will increase the condition of the flexible pavement and will end up with a better level of service. Therefore, better investments decisions on pavement maintenance will increase the economic growth and global competition for the area. However, improper allocation of money and resources would end up with further deteriorations of the facilities. So asset
management encourages highway maintenance managers to spend their scarce budget for the maintenance that is really needed. A well-developed pavement
management simulation model will allow highway maintenance managers to consider the impact of choosing one maintenance policy alternative versus another through what-if analysis and having informed decisions.
Discrete
event simulation (DES) is an alternative method of analysis that offers numerous benefits in pavement
management. Unlike the models currently in use, a decision support model created by utilizing the DES technique would allow fractionalizing the pavement in smaller proportions and simulating the policies on these smaller segments. Thus, users would see how their decisions would affect these specific segments in the highway network over a period of time. Furthermore, DES technique would better model the multiple resource requirements and dynamic complexity of pavement maintenance processes.
The purpose for this research is to create a decision support tool utilizing discrete
event simulation technique where the highway maintenance managers can foresee the outcomes of their what-if scenarios on the specific segments and whole of the highway network evaluated. Thus, can be used for both project and network level decision support. The simulation can also be used as a guiding tool on when, where and why resources are needed on needs basis.
This research relies on the budget allocation results from the linear optimization model (LOM). This model is a tool that creates the optimized budget allocation scheme for a network fitting to a determined scenario. Thus by integrating the LOM and the DES model, the maintenance managers can acquire an optimized budget allocation for their district and evaluate the results in both network and project selection level. Maintenance managers can obtain the best budget allocation plan without performing the repetitive trial and error approach like the previous decision support tools.
There is a vast amount data in many varieties gathered as results from the simulation model. This fact alone demonstrates how powerful the discrete
event simulation model is. By the nature of this simulation technique, the resources (highway segments, annual budget) can be traced throughout the simulation and this trait allows the design of the project selection level decision support system. By examining these reports, the maintenance managers can better observe how the scenarios evolve. Thus this tool helps the maintenance managers to have better decisions on the…

▼ Abstract
China Steel Corporation (CSC) was established in 1971. As all employees having been toiling together, has gradually forged itself as an affirmed enterprise group. During the late 1980s, the increasing civil awareness of environmental protection has caused mass and continuous violent protests. In view of this, CSC, a state-owned company then, abided by the Government policy to strengthen good relations with communities, established communication channels with the Legislative Yuan, the congress in Taiwan, and the media, so as to reinforce the communication with the stakeholders and improve crisis
management effectiveness. In April 1988, CSCâs Public Relations Office was established to promote public relations-related activities. It was renamed as Public Affairs Office after the privatization of CSC in 1995. During this evolutional process of environmental civil rights the author was fortunate enough to grow up together with CSC, and participated in many cases of crisis
management. Experience shows that the first priority of crisis
management is crisis prevention, and the highest level of crisis
management is to transform the crisis into opportunity. Otherwise, a corporate will pay a significant price, and compromise its image. Realizing the importance of crisis prevention and
management to a corporate, the author selects this issue as a research
subject.
This study is based on the process of crisis
management proposed by Mitroff & Pearson as the main theoretical framework. The five stages proposed include (a) signal detection, (b) probing and prevention, (c) damage containment, (d) recovery, (e) learning. This study adopts the case analysis and depth interviews as research method, supplemented by literature review in order to verify both the practice and theory to be coherent and consistent. Two cases, foreign labor
event of K Corporation and fire accident of C Corporation are studied by depth interviews with experts in crisis
management of CSC Group. In addition, this study particularly strengthens the design of the interview to make the research more complete and satisfactory. This study selects the people with practical experience in these events as the interviewee. Through depth interviews, this study tries to present a more objective view of these events from the aspects of scope, depth.
From the case study, it is found that most companies neglect the concept of crisis prevention, however, pay much attention to handling the crises instead. As a result, these companies have to pay more cost and price for their ignorance of crisis prevention. Study also found that over the past twenty years, there were several occurrences of crises in CSC Group companies. Substantial compensation has never been the case occurred. However, C Corporation was obliged to compensate as the companyâs
event of fire, which brings the CSC Group serious sequela and potential crisis, and as a result, increases the difficulties of crisis
management. This study tries to provide some recommendations that would be helpful for CSC Group…

be represented by a probability distribution. On the other hand,
subjective uncertainty represents the lack of knowledge of the
system modeller regarding the actual value of a variable.
Subjective uncertainty, for example, can be a result of lack of
data or linguistic expression. Subjective uncertainty is often
encountered in construction simulation due to the linguistic
expression, and use of expert judgment in estimating activity
durations. However, traditional DES is only able to consider
stochastic uncertainty using probability distributions; and cannot
handle subjective uncertainty. Fuzzy set theory provides a
methodology for mathematical modelling of subjective uncertainty.
Recently, fuzzy discrete event simulation (FDES) has been proposed
for considering subjective uncertainty in construction simulation
models. However, the fundamental differences between fuzzy numbers
and probability distributions introduce new challenges to FDES
frameworks. Furthermore, subjective and stochastic uncertainties
may simultaneously exist in a simulation model. However, no
framework is available that is able to consider both types of
uncertainties in a discrete event simulation model. Firstly, this
research, proposes a methodology for considering subjective
uncertainty in estimating the activity durations or productivity of
construction projects. Secondly, a FDES framework is proposed for
dealing with subjective uncertainty of activity durations. The
proposed framework advances the previous FDES frameworks by: (1)
solving the problem of time paradox (overestimation or
underestimation of the simulation time) (2) proposing a methodology
for analyzing queues in FDES. Furthermore, this research proposes a
novel hybrid discrete event simulation (HDES) framework that can
simultaneously deal with both stochastic and subjective
uncertainties. FDES framework is integrated within the proposed
HDES framework for processing fuzzy uncertainty. Sampling from
probability distributions are used to process stochastic
uncertainty. The proposed framework is validated against
analytically solved queuing examples containing both fuzzy and
probabilistic uncertainty. The practicality of this framework is
demonstrated using a case study of a module assembly yard. The
results of this case study are compared with the results of FDES
and traditional DES to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed
HDES framework.

▼ Business Administration/Interdisciplinary
Studies suggest that the majority of hospital errors go unreported. Equally disturbing is that data surrounding near miss events that could have harmed patients has been found to be even sparser. At the core of any medical error reporting effort is a desire to obtain data that can be used to reduce the frequency of errors, reveal the cause of errors, and empower those involved in the healthcare delivery system with the insight required to design methods to prevent the flaws that allow mistakes to occur. Aligned with the adage that “we can’t fix what we don’t know is broke”, the question is raised why does underreporting exist? The likelihood of reporting medical errors is explored as a manifestation of culture. Factors studied include communication and feedback, teamwork, fear of retribution, and leadership support (top management and supervisor). Data is presented using a nationally recognized instrument—the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Culture of Safety survey. Findings from the research are mixed with little positive relationship between the model and number of events reported although each factor is found to be positively associated with an employee’s perceived frequency by which near miss and no harm events are reported. While advances in patient safety have materialized, the act of employees’ actually reporting events still pales in comparison to the number of errors that have likely occurred, regardless of efforts to advance culture. To explore influencers beyond those found in the AHRQ Culture of Safety survey, an overlapping model is presented. This includes studying various underlying factors, such as understanding what constitutes a reportable event, ease of reporting, and knowledge of the processes supporting data submission, along with attempting to better assess the impact of the direct supervisor and incentives in influencing behavior. Findings suggest that these additional factors do contribute, albeit modestly, to the act of reporting errors. When adding tenure and patient interaction to the model, a higher percentage of the variance is explained. In terms of perceived frequency of reporting near misses and no harm events, this model yields similar results to the first, explaining approximately 28% of the variance. The two factors most positively associated with perceived frequency of reporting near miss and no harm events are communication and feedback and infrastructure —suggesting that some unexplored relationship may exist between the overlapping models.

▼ This study aimed to offer a behavioral model of culinary tourists by examining the theoretical and empirical evidence on the relationships among motivation, image, sat-isfaction, and loyalty. In particular, the concept of image was approached from both a cognitive and an affective viewpoint. Using convenience sampling, 543 usable question-naires were collected at the 17th Hadong Wild Tea Cultural Festival in Hadong County, South Korea during May 2-6 in 2012. Twelve hypotheses were proposed in the model, which was tested using structural equation modeling (SEM). As a result, nine hypotheses out of the twelve were supported, showing that the model fit the data well (c2(196) = 541.788, c2/ df = 2.764, RMSEA = .057, CFI = .97, NFI = .95, and GFI = .92, RFI = .94, IFI = .97 and PNFI = .80).
This study revealed that motivation, experiential perception and affect were im-portant predictors of satisfaction and future behavior of culinary tourists; pull motivation-al factors, as a major parameter in expectation formation, influenced tourists’ experiential perception and their positive perception of programs/activities, food and tea products, supporting services and environmental factors generated pleasure and excitement. Then, in turn, tourists’ pull motivation, experiential perception and affect combined to influence their satisfaction and future behavior. Satisfaction served as a mediating role in determin-ing both food
event loyalty and destination loyalty except that tourists’ experiential per-ception had a direct effect on food
event loyalty. It should be noted that the relative im-portance of cognitive and affective aspects of the
event to influence their satisfaction and future behavior differed, indicating that affect with the
event experience had the strongest effect on satisfaction while experiential perception had a direct effect on food
event loyalty.
Finally, tourists’ positive perception and experience that satisfy their needs at an
event utilizing regional food and beverages can have a positive influence on the decision-making process of holiday destinations in the long run. That is, repeat visitation will be-come a benchmark of successful culinary tourism along with the economic growth and development. It is clear that culinary tourism can be used to promote a regional destina-tion by festivals or events utilizing local specialty.

▼ M.Tech.
Sport has become the broadest common cultural denominator in almost all societies (Lapchick, cited in Gouws, 1997). As a result, sporting events have become an increasingly popular means for achieving political, cultural and economic benefits for the host nation (Parent, 2008). Consequently, this has led to an increased demand in the value of diverse skills in the sport event management field. This is to cope with the increased complexities surrounding sport event management and thus requires a distinct body of knowledge and skills to be developed (Quatman, 2008). However, concern over the lack of a relevant base of common knowledge (NASPE-NASSM, 1993) as well as pertinent training programmes to prepare sport managers for the contemporary sport events industry has resulted in current graduates not necessarily meeting the needs or expectations of the industry. As a result, there appears to be a gap between the current event management curricula outcomes at higher education institutions (HEIs) in South Africa and the expected competencies of sport event managers in practice. The aim is therefore to develop guidelines for sport event management training in higher education institutions on various HEQF levels (DoL, 2008) to address the competencies required by managers for the South African context. This translates into objectives, namely: i) to identify, conceptualise and unpack sport event management competencies required by sport event managers, ii) to investigate the curricula of sport event management at higher education institutions in South Africa, iii) to investigate the importance of different competencies required by sport event managers in South Africa, iv) to investigate the current level of competencies of practitioners regarding sport event management in South Africa, v) to provide a background on the current education system in South Africa and vi) provide guidelines for sport event management training in higher education institutions at various HEQF levels (DoL, 2008) to address the competencies required by managers for the South African context. The research design is descriptive in nature, with quantitative methods in the form of questionnaires utilised to collect the data. The sample includes trainers¹ from HEIs in South Africa offering sport event management, and subsequently sport event management, as well as practitioners² from HEIs in South Africa and sport event managers from selected sport companies in Gauteng.

▼ Supply chain system is a non-deterministic in nature so that it behaves in an uncertain manner which
forms a complex net of physical and information flow at which decision made in one stage of the
supply chain will usually have unpredictable impact on other stage of the chain. Having in mind all these and
other behaviours of a supply chain that makes it challenging to manage, manufacturing industries are
striving for the flow of their raw materials and goods to the right place, at the right time, with the right
quantity with a reasonable price.
Due to the by-product nature of the raw material and lack of integrated supply chain, the Ethiopian leather
industry particularly the tanning industries are suffering from the shortage of raw hide and skin, poor quality
of supply and price hikes of the raw material which create a big challenge for the survival of some of the
tanneries. Currently the tanneries are faced with two conflicting objectives, the need for collecting large
amount of skin when available in the market to use it during scarce times and quality deterioration of the
raw material if stored for more than fifteen days on average.
Different methodologies that are appropriate for supply chain modelling so as to improve its performance
are reviewed. Modelling and simulation is found suitable and ARENA
®
simulation software is prioritized
among the number of available commercial simulation software to analyze and propose solution for
Ethiopian Leather Industry supply chain problems.
Thirty journal articles are reviewed based on content which use simulation and modelling methodology to
overcome different supply chain
management challenges. Gaps are identified regarding the performance
measurement and other parameters that should be considered while modelling and simulation of a supply
chain.
This study focuses on filling the gaps and develops a four echelon supply chain model with the help of
Arena simulation software to investigate and improve the Ethiopian leather industry supply chain
performance with a special focus on the upstream suppliers of hide and skin till it reaches to the tanneries. It
concentrates on the way how to create balance between the conflicting objectives while keeping the
operating performance of the tannery optimum and the inventory stored within a reasonable level.
Four scenarios on the inventory replenishment strategy for the tanning industries through varying the time
between consecutive orders and the quantity of skin per unit order are developed. After running the trials a
significant method to control the inventory level of the tanneries while keeping the operating performance
in a reasonable level is achieved. The outputs are also analyzed to share inventory stock information in every tier of the supply chain and help assigned personnel to make decisions based on facts rather than
assumptions in such uncertain environment.
Due to the similarity of the Ethiopia leather industry supply chain, hence it is legally tied and proclamation

▼ The aim of this research was to discuss about event management theory and how the Liiga (the major ice hockey league in Finland) team organisations could use this theory to improve their home game events. This topic has been divided into two research questions from which the first discusses the current situation and the other gives suggestions for future improvements for the Liiga team organisations. This research is conducted as a master’s theses and it has been conducted in years 2014 to 2016. In order to understand the research topic the general theory of event management has been told from the sporting event point of view. This theory has been divided into two different sections which are the five stages of event management and the operational strategies of event management. Answers for the research questions have been search with a qualitative research and its methods of interview and questionnaire, observation and content analysis. These methods and the way these have been used in this research are introduced after the event management theory. The data collected with the selected qualitative research methods has been introduced as empirical findings. These empirical findings are introduced a research method at a time and in a same order as the data has been collected. After introducing the collected data it has been carefully analysed. The analysis have also been divided into two section from which the first answers to the first research question concerning the current situation and the other the second questions concerning the future improvement that could be done. The first part of analysis has been made in a same chronological order as the event management theory has been written in order it to be easy to compere these two to each other. In the end the conclusions of this research and its research questions are introduced. Also the knowledge which this research is offering for the tourism industry and for its readers have been discussed. This are also a lot of different ways how this research could be continued and made further and these ways have been discussed as well. Last but not least the research has been viewed critically and the quality of it has been questioned.

▼ Due to the rapid evolution of technology, IT software has become incredibly complex. However the human factor still has a very important role on the application of it, since people are responsible to create software. Consequently, software vulnerabilities represent inevitable drawbacks, found to cost extremely large amounts of money to the companies. “Heartbleed” is a recently discovered vulnerability with no prior investigation that answers questions about the impact it has to the companies affected. This paper focuses on the impact of it on the market value of the companies who participated in the vulnerability disclosure process with the help of an event study methodology. Furthermore our analysis investigates if there is a different affection to the value of the company based on the roles those companies had in the process. Our results suggest that the market did not punish the companies about the existence of vulnerability. However the general negative reaction of the market to the incident reflects the importance of a strategic vulnerability disclosure plan for such cases.

In pace with the expansion of events tourism, requirements for security management in connection with the events are also increasing. Threat of hooliganism is common at certain events and needs to be dealt with to avoid possible impacts on the tourism industry. The purpose of this paper is to examine how the actors working on security before and during events ensure the health of the individual in circumstances where hooliganism is present and harasses the hospitality industry. Henceforth we want to arrive at the degree of hooliganism affect the tourist industry and in such cases, in which way. In order to respond to the aim and our issues, we have used a quantitative survey that helped us to demonstrate this phenomenon. The questions concern much about hooliganism and similar violent crimes get individuals to opt out of certain events as a result of hooliganism. In order to complete the remainder of the purpose, we have chosen to use a qualitative survey. The point of the qualitative survey was that it would give us a broader understanding of the subject, while it would answer our second question regarding security events. The collection of all of the studies, especially the quantitative, shows that threats like hooliganism have a negative effect on events tourism. The management is being streamlined through new methods that can hopefully counteract the fear that seems to have arisen within certain visitors.
