Abstract: Sport is a growing sociocultural phenomenon that presents multiple meanings and possibilities of practice. Sport Pedagogy (SP) has shown that it is possible to teach sports prioritizing the full development of individuals, not simply by teaching techniques through repetition, but considering their needs, the reflective process, autonomy, the reasons of execution, the decision making process, socialization, defending a process that should be organized, systematized, applied and evaluated. American Football (AF) is a growing sport in Brazil considering the number of teams, athletes and different championships that exists in the country, however little is known in science about the coaching process nationally. The main objective of the study was to investigate the process of teaching, experiencing, learning and training AF in the state of São Paulo through coaches¿ knowledge. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted in this qualitative, exploratory and descriptive research with 4 adult coaches in the State of Sao Paulo that coach the teams that participated in the national championship entitled "Superliga Nacional de Futebol Americano" in 2016. The interviews were fully transcribed and a content analysis was conducted. The analysis¿ categories were defined as coaching staff, coaches¿ learning, organization, systematization, application, evaluation, beginner athletes, difficulties and suggestions. Overall, an organized and systematized coaching process was revealed in which coaches seek to adapt practices considering their athletes¿ needs, and put their focus in teaching strategies and techniques aiming to execute the playbook correctly. Coaches related to the traditional approach to teaching sports, coaching mainly through analytic exercises, game situations, execution and rehearsal of plays. Evaluations are conducted in the context to select starting players and check the athletes¿ knowledge regarding the playbook and techniques, mainly through games and practices¿ video analysis and observation. The study highlighted that coaches learn mostly through unmediated situations in informal learning contexts.
