Le diabète gestationnel est une condition pouvant augmenter le risque de certaines complications lors de la grossesse et de l’accouchement. De plus, la littérature actuelle suggère que les individus qui y ont été exposés in utero seraient plus à risque de développer certaines conditions de santé à plus long terme, telles que le diabète de type 2. Plusieurs études ont voulu déterminer si l’exposition au diabète gestationnel était associée à une adiposité plus importante pendant l’enfance, l’adolescence ou l’âge adulte. Toutefois, la majorité de ces études ont utilisé l’indice de masse corporelle comme mesure d’adiposité. L’utilisation d’autres méthodes offrant une estimation plus exacte de la quantité et de la distribution du tissu adipeux pourrait permettre d’obtenir des mesures qui sont davantage associées au risque cardiométabolique et ainsi, aider à mieux comprendre l’impact d’une exposition au diabète gestationnel sur la santé de l’enfant. Dans cet ordre d’idées, le présent projet avait pour but d’étudier l’association entre l’exposition prénatale au diabète gestationnel et le profil de risque cardiométabolique pendant l’enfance en comparant la composition corporelle et la distribution du tissu adipeux d’enfants exposés et non exposés au diabète gestationnel et en déterminant si ces mesures d’adiposité étaient associées à leur profil glycémique. Les résultats obtenus démontrent une plus grande proportion de masse grasse chez les enfants nés d’une grossesse compliquée par un diabète gestationnel ainsi qu’une distribution davantage centrale du tissu adipeux. En outre, ces altérations étaient associées à un profil glycémique défavorable. Plus d’études seront nécessaires pour mieux comprendre à quel moment et par quels mécanismes se développent ces altérations et aussi, pour déterminer s’il est possible de prévenir leur apparition et leur évolution vers le développement de l’obésité ou du diabète à plus long terme.

Gestational diabetes increases the risk of pregnancy and delivery adverse outcomes. Moreover, individuals exposed in utero may be at higher risk of developing health problems such as type 2 diabetes. Many studies aim to investigate the association between gestational diabetes exposure and increased adiposity during childhood, adolescence or adulthood. However, a majority of these studies used the body mass index as an adiposity measure. Other methods that estimate adipose tissue quantity and distribution with more accuracy could provide measures that are better associated with cardiometabolic risk and therefore, could help to better understand the impact of gestational diabetes exposure on health. In this context, this project aimed to study the association between prenatal exposure to gestational diabetes and cardiometabolic risk profile in children. Les enfants ayant été exposés au diabète gestationnel (DG) in utero sont à risque de développer différentes complications de santé plus tard dans la vie telles que l’obésité, le diabète de type 2 et les maladies cardiovasculaires. Il devient donc nécessaire de déterminer de nouvelles stratégies de prévention des facteurs de risque de ces maladies chez cette population d’enfants. De plus en plus d’évidences scientifiques suggèrent que l’alimentation en bas âge serait impliquée dans des mécanismes de programmation de la santé à long terme. En ce sens, le but de ce projet était d’évaluer l’impact de l’alimentation du nourrisson, incluant la durée de l’allaitement maternel et le moment d’introduction des aliments solides, sur les profils anthropométriques et métaboliques des enfants d’âge préscolaire et scolaire ayant été exposés au DG in utero. Les résultats de ce projet de maitrise ont permis de déterminer qu’une exposition prolongée à l’allaitement maternel permet une amélioration du profil cardiométabolique des enfants ayant été exposés au DG pendant la grossesse via une réduction de leurs niveaux d’hémoglobine glyquée et de leur pourcentage de masse grasse pendant l’enfance. La durée de l’allaitement maternel exclusif ainsi que le moment d’introduction des aliments solides ne sont cependant pas associés au profil cardiométabolique des enfants. Ces résultats suggèrent donc que la promotion d’une durée d’allaitement maternel plus longue devrait être accentuée chez les femmes ayant un antécédent de DG dans le but de prévenir les complications de santé associées chez leurs enfants.

Children born from mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are at high risk of developing many health problems later in life such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Thus, there is an urgent need to find new strategies to prevent risk factors associated with these diseases among this population of children. Increasing evidence suggests that nutrition during infancy could play a major role in long term health programming. Accordingly, this study aims to evaluate the association between early life nutrition, including breastfeeding duration and the timing of solid food introduction, on the anthropometric and metabolic profiles of children exposed to GDM in utero. Results of this study showed that prolonged exposure to breast milk was associated with a better cardiometabolic profile in childhood, demonstrated by a reduction in glycated hemoglobin levels and in fast mass percentage. However, exclusive breastfeeding duration and the timing of solid food introduction were not associated with the cardiometabolic profile of children. These results suggest that promoting breastfeeding among women with previous GDM could be a good strategy to prevent cardiometabolic alterations among this population of high-risk children.

Os efluentes gasosos industriais têm sido tradicionalmente tratados por processos físico-químicos, como lavadores, adsorção, condensação e oxidação. Embora essas técnicas tenham altas eficiências, a necessidade de adição de produtos químicos e a substituição do adsorvente resulta em custo de operação relativamente alto quando comparados com técnicas de tratamento biológico. O objetivo deste trabalho foi: aprimorar uma unidade experimental de biofiltração para depuração de uma corrente gasosa contendo \'H IND.2\'Sútilizando como material suporte a espuma de poliuretano, analisar a fluidodinâmica do leito através de ensaios de perda de carga em função da vazão de ar e da umidade do leito e analisar o desempenho do biofiltro na depuração do \'H IND.2\'Sćom o aumento progressivo da concentração de entrada. O biofiltro foi construído com uma coluna de acrílico, dividida em 3 módulos, 2 com 13 cm de altura e um central com 50 cm, totalizando uma altura do leito de 76 cm e o diâmetro interno era de 5,2 cm. Nas extremidades superiores e inferiores do biofiltro foram acoplados módulos para a distribuição e captação da corrente gasosa e também para a recirculação da fase líquida. O inóculo utilizado foi lodo de uma unidade de lodos ativados, que trabalha como pós-tratamento de um reator UASB tratando esgotos domésticos. A adaptação do inóculo foi realizada por 7 dias com tiossulfato e 7 dias com o \'H IND.2\'S\'. As concentrações médias de sulfeto estudadas foram subdivididas em sete fases com concentrações médias de 141, 271, 514, 532, 581, 878 e 1303 ppm. A vazão utilizada foi de 100 L/h resultando em um tempo de detenção de aproximadamente 58 segundos. As perdas de carga obtidas no sistema foram inferiores a 0,8.\'10 POT.-2ḿca. A espuma de poliuretano se apresentou um bom meio suporte para a fixação dos microrganismos. O lodo ativado se apresentou um bom inóculo para o tratamento de \'H IND.2\'Sṕor necessitar de um curto período de tempo para sua adaptação. A eficiência média do biofiltro se manteve acima dos 96%. A umidade do leito se manteve acima de 92%, atingindo uma capacidade de eliminação máxima (ECmáx) de aproximadamente 155 g/\'M POT.3\'.h e uma capacidade de eliminação ótima (ECótimo) de aproximadamente 139 g/\'M POT.3\'.h. O principal produto da degradação do \'H IND.2\'Séncontrado foi o enxofre elementar.

Le latex est utilisé dans les mortiers industriels dans le but d’améliorer les propriétés de ce matériau, tels que la maniabilité de la pâte à l’état frais, l’adhésion sur le support pour les mortiers-colles et les propriétés mécaniques à l’état durci du matériau. Ainsi l’adsorption du latex sur les phases minérales du ciment a un impact sur la rhéologie et les propriétés mécaniques du mortier frais et durci. Ce comportement résulte des interactions du latex avec les phases cimentaires et de l’avancement des différentes réactions d’hydratation elles-mêmes affectées par la présence de latex. Or, ces interactions ne sont toujours pas bien comprises du fait de la réactivité du ciment. L’objectif de ce travail est de mieux comprendre le rôle du latex en particulier l’influence de ses caractéristiques notamment la taille, le dosage et la densité surfacique de charge du latex, sur le comportement rhéologique du mortier au jeune âge et de ses propriétés à long terme en s’affranchissant de tous les effets liés à l’hydratation du ciment. Pour cela, nous travaillons avec un système modèle inerte qui permet de rendre compte des effets induits par le latex en s’affranchissant de la réactivité du ciment. L’influence des caractéristiques du latex sur les propriétés mécaniques d´une suspension de minéral inerte est estimée par des mesures de rhéométrie dynamique. Les résultats sont corrélés à l’adsorption des particules de latex sur la surface du minéral inerte qui estimée à travers l’établissement des isothermes d’adsorption. Pour ce faire, l’adsorption des différents latex est réalisée sur des surfaces planes de silice (lames de verre) couvertes d’hydrates de silicates de calcium C-S-H (principal hydrate de ciment). L’adsorption du latex sur le minéral inerte est observée directement par microscopie : soit par microscopie optique dans le cas des latex de grande taille (1µm) soit par microscopie à force atomique dans le cas de latex de petite taille (210nm). Les isothermes d’adsorption obtenues des trois latex étudiés, différant soit par la taille soit par la charge, ont montré que, à concentration massique équivalente, le latex chargé s’adsorbe plus que le non chargé, et le latex de petite taille s’adsorbe plus que le gros latex parce qu’il y a plus de particules en interaction avec la surface. La topographie d’adsorption des particules de latex sur la surface est également différente : les latex chargés apparaissent beaucoup plus agrégés que le latex non chargé. La filmification des latex n’est pas observée pour les dosages de latex étudiés. Un accord qualitatif a été obtenu avec les simulations numériques, par méthode Monte Carlo, de l’adsorption des latex. En ce qui concerne les propriétés rhéologiques, les mesures ont été réalisées sur des suspensions de calcite dans une solution saturée d’hydroxyde de calcium. Ces mesures mettent en évidence la contribution des particules de latex au réseau granulaire qui se traduit par l’augmentation de la déformation critique avec la quantité de latex.

▼ Nowadays, the search for new technologies that are able to follow the upcoming challenges in oil industry is a constant. Always trying properties improvements of the used materials, looking for the best performance and greater life time. Besides the search for technologies that show an improvement of performance, the search for materials environmentally correct along the whole production process. In Oil well cementing, this search for new technologies passes through the development of slurry systems that support these requests and that are also environmentally friendly. In this context, the use of geopolymer slurries is a great alternative route to cementing oil wells. Besides having good properties, comparable to Portland cement slurries, this alternative material releases much less CO2 gas in the production of their root materials when compared the production of Portland cement, which releases tons of CO2. In order to improve the properties of geopolymer slurries has been added Calcium Oxide, as observed in other studies that slurries where the Calcium is present the values of compressive strength is greater. The addition has been realized based in the CaO/SiO2 molar ratio of 0.05, 0.10 and 0.15. Have been performed compressive strength tests, thickening time, rheology and fliud loss control test of the slurries, following NBR 9831, as well as the physical chemical characterization of XRD, SEM and TG. Has been observed in most of the tests the slurries follow a tendency until the ratio of 0.10, which inverses in the ratio 0.15. This behavior can be explained by two phenomena that occur simultaneously, the first one is the break of the polymer chains and a consequent increase in molucules mobility, which prevails until the ratio of 0.1, and the second is possible approach of the chains due to the capacity of the calcium ions stabilize the charges of two different aluminum. There is only one linearity in the mechanical behavior that can be attributed to the appereance of the C-S-H phase. Based on this, it is concluded that the phenomenon of breaking the polymer chains predominates until the ratio of 0.1, causing an increase of the filtrate volume, lower rheological parameters and increasing thickening time. ▼ Impure tricalcium silicate (Alite, C3S) is the most important and abundant phase of Portland cement. It reacts quickly with water to give calcium hydroxide (CH) and calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) which is the most important phase for strength development. It is well known that the C3S particle size distribution plays an important role on the hydration kinetics, microstructural development and final properties of hydrated cement pastes. The general aim of the present investigation was to gain insight on the effect of particle size on the hydration kinetics and microstructural development of alite pastes. In this study, alite was synthesized and separated into different gradations. The hydration kinetics was investigated by means of isothermal calorimetry and chemical shrinkage. The microstructural developments of the different gradations of alite were studied and compared using different techniques such as: SEM, TEM, XRD, He pycnometry, N2 adsorption, etc. The hydration kinetics during the different stages of the hydration was observed to be dependent on the initial particle size of the grains and also related with the defect concentration on the surface of the grains. Higher rates of reaction were observed for powders with higher specific surface area. A linear relationship between the rate constant and the specific surface area was observed. Further, it was observed that the hydration kinetics of multi-sized system during the nucleation and growth process can be modeled as the linear addition of individual particles. The microstructural development of C3S pastes at later ages was found to be poorly affected by the initial particle size; the nature of the hydration products is the same. The only differences concern the capillary porosity and the C-S-H density. Slightly higher values of capillary porosity and C-S-H density were measured for smaller particles. ▼ Alkali silica reaction (ASR) is a long-term reaction between certain aggregates containing amorphous silicate phases and the alkalis from the cement paste. These silicates react with the alkalis present in the pore solution of the cement paste and form an expansive gel in the presence of water, resulting in the macroscopic expansion and cracking of concrete. Supplementary cementitious materials (SCM), replacing a part of the Portland cement (PC) in blended pastes, are known to reduce or even stop expansion due to ASR. Studies indicate that the main reason for this is the decrease in alkalinity of the pore solution of the cement paste, which in turn is attributed to the change in composition of the C-S-H, the main cement hydrate. However, knowledge on the effect of SCMs on ASR control is incomplete, especially the role of aluminium. The first part of this work focuses on the effect of aluminium and silicon incorporation in C-S-H, provided by SCMs, on the composition of the pore solution of blended pastes. It was found that, contrary to the common idea, the incorporation of aluminium in C-S-H does not increase its alkali fixation capacity, suggesting that the greater effectiveness of SCMs containing alumina is due to other reasons. In a second part, it is proposed that the additional aluminium acts directly on the reactive phases of the aggregates. Marine chemistry and geology theories about the dissolution mechanisms of amorphous silicates were applied to cementitious systems. Aluminium species, provided by certain SCMs and present in the pore solution, are incorporated in the silica surface and limit the dissolution of amorphous silica of the aggregates, limiting ASR. The effect of aluminium was shown through a study of reactive aggregates in simulated pore solutions. The mechanism was explained through a more fundamental study with pure amorphous silica plates put in simulated pore solutions. Finally, the impact of various alkali cations on ASR was studied to better understand the reactions inducing gel formation. Advisors/Committee Members: Scrivener, Karen.

Un modèle de transport réactif est proposé pour simuler la réactivité des matériaux à base de ciment en contact avec une saumure saturée en CO2 et/ou le CO2 supercritique (CO2sc) dans les conditions de stockage géologique du CO2. Un code a été développé pour résoudre simultanément le transport et la chimie par une approche globale couplée, compte tenu de l'effet de la température et de la pression. La variabilité des propriétés du CO2sc avec la pression et la température, telles que la solubilité dans l'eau, la densité et la viscosité sont pris en compte. On suppose que tous les processus chimiques sont en équilibre thermodynamique. Les réactions de dissolution et de précipitation de la portlandite (CH) et de calcite (CC) sont décrites par des lois d'action de masse et des seuils de produit d'activité ioniques. Une cinétique de dissolution de CH est introduite pour faciliter la convergence numérique. La définition d'une variable principale permet de capturer la précipitation et la dissolution des phases solides à base de calcium. Une généralisation de la loi d'action de masse est développée et appliquée aux silicates de calcium hydratés (CSH) pour tenir compte de la variation continue (diminution) du rapport Ca/Si au cours de la dissolution des CSH. Les variations de porosité et de la microstructure induites par les réactions de précipitation et de dissolution sont également prises en compte. Le couplage entre le transport et la chimie est modélisé par cinq équations de bilan de masse écrites pour chaque atome (Ca, Si, C, K, Cl), ainsi que par une équation de conservation de la masse totale et celle de la charge électrique. Les lois de Darcy et de Nernst-Planck sont utilisées pour décrire le transport de masse et d'ions. Les propriétés de transport dépendent du degré de saturation et de la porosité. Le modèle est implémenté dans le code de volumes finis, Bil. Les principes de cette méthode et l'approche de modélisation sont discutés et illustrés sur un exemple simple. Ce modèle est en mesure de simuler les processus de carbonatation des matériaux à base de ciment, dans des conditions à la fois saturés et insaturés, dans une large plage de concentration de CO2, de température et de pression. Plusieurs expériences, rapportées dans la littérature, sont simulées en utilisant divers types de conditions aux limites: (i) solutions saturées ou non en CO2 et carbonate de calcium, (ii) gas supercritique de CO2. Dans le cadre du concept français de stockage géologique profond des déchets radioactifs, ilest envisagé de stocker les colis vitrifiés de déchets de Moyenne Activité à Vie Longue au sein de surconteneurs en béton. La chimie de l'eau interstitielle étant susceptible de modifier la durabilité chimique des matrices vitreuses, cette étude a été menée afin d'appréhender la phénoménologie d'altération du verre au contact d'eaux cimentaires. Des solutions représentatives des deux premiers stades de dégradation d'un ciment Portland et d'un ciment bas pH ont été étudiées. Les conditions dans lesquelles le rapport S/V (surface de verre sur volume de solution) et la chimie de la solution pilotent les mécanismes d'altération du verre sont clairement établies.Si le flux d'éléments relâchés par le verre est suffisant pour atteindre et maintenir un état de sursaturation qui permette la nucléation de phases secondaires (C-S-H et zéolithes), alors la précipitation de ces phases pilote la dissolution du verre. Les rôles antagonistes du calcium ont été mis en évidence en fonction du régime d'altération du verre. A faible rapport S/V, l'incorporationdu calcium au sein de la pellicule d'altération augmente ses propriétés passivantes. A l'inverse, àfort rapport S/V, le calcium précipite sous forme de phases cimentaires consommatrices d'élémentsréticulants de la pellicule d'altération, ce qui engendre le maintien d'une vitesse d'altération élevée.Le rôle bénéfique d'un ciment bas pH vis-à-vis de l'altération du verre est expliqué à partir de cesrésultats. Ce travail constitue une première étape visant à la compréhension fine des mécanismesd'altération du verre en milieu cimentaire.

In the French deep geological repository concept, intermediate-level vitrified wastepackages could be disposed of concrete medium. Chemical composition and pH of the interstitialleaching water are expected to influence the chemical durability of glass. Investigations have thusbeen carried out to study glass dissolution mechanisms and kinetics in contact with cement waters.Three cement pore waters were studied: the first two correspond to two stages of the Portlandcement aging and the third corresponds to equilibrium with a low pH concrete. The S/V ratio(glass-surface-area-to-solution-volume ratio) and the chemistry of cement waters are the two mainparameters that control glass alteration mechanisms.If the leaching flow from the glass allows a degree of supersaturation to be reached and maintainedwhich leads to nucleation of secondary phases, then precipitation of these phases drives glassdissolution. At a very low S/V ratio, the calcium uptake into the alteration layer increases itspassivating properties. Conversely, at a high S/V ratio, the calcium precipitates as cementitiousphases consuming elements which form the alteration layer. ▼ Nowadays, the search for new technologies that are able to follow the upcoming challenges in oil industry is a constant. Always trying properties improvements of the used materials, looking for the best performance and greater life time. Besides the search for technologies that show an improvement of performance, the search for materials environmentally correct along the whole production process. In Oil well cementing, this search for new technologies passes through the development of slurry systems that support these requests and that are also environmentally friendly. In this context, the use of geopolymer slurries is a great alternative route to cementing oil wells. Besides having good properties, comparable to Portland cement slurries, this alternative material releases much less CO2 gas in the production of their root materials when compared the production of Portland cement, which releases tons of CO2. In order to improve the properties of geopolymer slurries has been added Calcium Oxide, as observed in other studies that slurries where the Calcium is present the values of compressive strength is greater. The addition has been realized based in the CaO/SiO2 molar ratio of 0.05, 0.10 and 0.15. Have been performed compressive strength tests, thickening time, rheology and fliud loss control test of the slurries, following NBR 9831, as well as the physical chemical characterization of XRD, SEM and TG. Has been observed in most of the tests the slurries follow a tendency until the ratio of 0.10, which inverses in the ratio 0.15. This behavior can be explained by two phenomena that occur simultaneously, the first one is the break of the polymer chains and a consequent increase in molucules mobility, which prevails until the ratio of 0.1, and the second is possible approach of the chains due to the capacity of the calcium ions stabilize the charges of two different aluminum. There is only one linearity in the mechanical behavior that can be attributed to the appereance of the C-S-H phase. Based on this, it is concluded that the phenomenon of breaking the polymer chains predominates until the ratio of 0.1, causing an increase of the filtrate volume, lower rheological parameters and increasing thickening time. Le projet du Centre Industriel de stockage Géologique ou CIEGO porté par l’Andra (Agence nationale pour la gestion des déchets radioactifs) permettra de stocker les déchets de moyenne activité à vie longue et haute activité à 500 mètres de profondeur dans des galeries en bétons construites dans une couche d’argilite. L’objectif principal de cette thèse est d’étudier les effets des rayonnements gamma de faible débit de dose sur le comportement physico-chimique et hydrothermo-mécanique du béton. Des expériences à différentes échelles ont donc été réalisées au cours de cette thèse. Des mortiers et des pâtes de ciment ont été irradiés dans un irradiateur gamma (E = 0,667 MeV, LET = 0,23 keV.μm-1) sur le site du cyclotron Arronax (Saint-Herblain,France). La variation des résistances en flexion et en compression a été déterminée pour différents types de matériaux (mortier humide, sec et carbonaté et pâte cimentaire sèche et carbonatée) montrant une importante diminution des propriétés mécaniques. Ces variations on été expliquées par des études physico-chimiques de sillicates de calcium hydratés (C-S-H), phase prédominante du béton, montrant une modification sous rayonnement gamma. Les résultats microscopiques et macroscopiques ont ainsi été comparés afin de comprendre l’évolution d’un matériau cimentaire sous rayonnement gamma de faible débit de dose.

The project of Centre Industriel de stockage Géologique or CIGEO supported by Andra (French Agency for Radioactive Waste Management) will allow storing intermediate level and high-level wastes 500 meters deep inconcrete galleries built in an impermeable argillaceous rock. The main objective of this study is to understand the effects of lower dose rate external gamma irradiations on the physical-chemical and hydro-thermo-mechanical behavior of concrete which could be used in the CIGEO structures and elements. A multiscale and multi-physics experimental protocol has been established during this PhD work. Mortar and cement paste specimens have been irradiated in a gamma irradiator (E = 0.667 MeV,LET = 0.23 keV.μm-1) and subsequently subjected to bending and compressive mechanical stress tests. These irradiations have been performed at the ARRONAX cyclotron facility (Saint-Herblain, France). The variations of compressive and bending strength after irradiation have been measured for different materials (humid, dried and carbonated mortar and cement pastes) showing a high decrease of mechanicals properties. Mechanical variations have been explained by the study of physical-chemical evolution of calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H), the major phase composing the concrete which can be modified under gamma radiation. Microscopic and macroscopic results were successfully compared to explain the evolution of the cementitious materials under low doserate of gamma radiation.

▼ Supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) lower the environmental impact of cement and concrete but react more slowly than Portland cement, which therefore limits the levels of substitution possible as reasonable early strengths are necessary. One of the main factors affecting the reaction of the SCMs is the alkalinity of the pore solution. However, alkalis do not only affect SCMs, but also the clinker phases. It is generally accepted that alkalis accelerate the hydration of Portland cement but may have a detrimental impact on strength at later ages. The aim of this work is to clarify the impact of alkali salts (NaOH and Na2SO4) on the kinetics and microstructural development of cementitious systems to better understand their effect on the mechanical properties. The study of many different systems, from models such as alite to more realistic cement-slag systems, allows a general overview of the trends in each parameter. The novelty of this thesis is the study of the relationship between the development of the porosity over time, as well as the evolution of the phase assemblage, and the resulting mechanical strength in the presence of alkalis. Moreover, the use of 1H NMR brings new insights on the impact of alkalis on the amount of water and density of C-S-H in non-dried samples. For a same degree of hydration of cement, the addition of Na2SO4 leads to the same compressive strength as the alkali-free system while NaOH clearly lowers it. Ettringite is suggested as responsible for the differences. While Na2SO4 promotes the precipitation of ettringite, NaOH clearly inhibits it. Therefore, a higher volume of hydrates can better fill the space, the porosity decreases and consequently the strength is increased. Moreover, the addition of sodium gluconate to the cement-slag systems with Na2SO4 improves the strength development which seems to be related to the formation of a less dense C-S-H that better fills the space and lowers the porosity. The presence of Na2SO4 or NaOH does not affect the bulk density of C-S-H but major differences are observed in the morphology of C-S-H. Sulfate uptake leads to a divergent needle-like C-S-H while NaOH promotes a C-S-H that tends towards a foil-like morphology. Also, alkalis lead to a lower and more stable Ca/Si in C-S-H. However, the mechanical strength appears to be independent on the morphology and chemical composition of C-S-H. Alkali salts clearly accelerate the hydration rate at early ages but decrease the degree of hydration at later ages. From the studies on alite, white cement and white cement-slag systems, it has been observed that a slowdown in hydration kinetics could not be explained by changes in the relative humidity, i.e. the water activity. The increased concentration of aluminate ions could explain some of the slowdown but it appears there are other effects. Advisors/Committee Members: Scrivener, Karen, Matschei, Thomas.

▼ The Virginia Tech Spectral-Line Survey (VTSS) is a series of 10-degree wide, arcminute-resolution images of the warm ionized interstellar medium (WIM) within the Milky Way for declinations greater than -15 degrees. The Wisconsin Hydrogen-Alpha Mapper (WHAM) studies the kinematics and distribution of this same material on an angular scale of one degree. Comparing the spatially-resolved images of the VTSS with WHAM's high spectral resolution images shows that the ISM's characteristics appear to be very similar at both degree and arcminute scales – we see similar structures, and notice the same [S II]/H-alpha trend between those structures at both degree and arcminute scales. VTSS fields show three basic types of structures – compact clouds with diameters greater than several degrees, those that are 1-degree or less in diameter, and extended filaments that differ from the clouds by spanning several degrees in length but having thicknesses of only a few tens of arcminutes. The latter two morphological types cannot be observed by WHAM. Additionally, VTSS data confirms that the [S II] intensity values are directly proportional to H-alpha intensities, a result that is also observed at degree resolutions. Finally, VTSS data show that [S II]/H-alpha ratios are, on average, nearly six times higher in the filaments. This would indicate that collisional excitation of singly-ionized sulfur ions is the dominant emission source within filaments. In clouds, the lower [S II]/H-alpha values observed are evidence that the H-alpha recombination line of photo-excited neutral hydrogen dominates. Because automating the VTSS was a key part of obtaining many of the images used in this project, I begin with a discussion of general observatory automation. I then address the specific processes and techniques used in automating the VTSS before discussing data collection and reduction techniques. Advisors/Committee Members: Simonetti, John H. Embora ainda n?o exista um mecanismo para explicar a fase supers?lida deste sistema, ela tem sido frequentemente associada com a presen?a de desordem no cristal, que pode ocorrer com a exist?ncia de algum tipo de defeito. O m?todo do trabalho revers?vel ? aplicado para calcular a concentra??o de vac?ncias e a energia livre de liga??o entre estes defeitos pontuais. Inicialmente, esta metodologia ? aplicada a um s?lido qu?ntico descrito por uma fun??o de onda tipo Jastrow, para em seguida ser aplicada no nosso sistema de interesse. A fun??o de onda sombra ? utilizada para modelar o 4He s?lido hcp, cujas configura??es s?o amostradas atrav?s do m?todo de Monte Carlo utilizando o algoritmo de Metropolis. Although there is no mechanism to explain the supersolid phase of this system, it has often been associated with the presence of disorder in the crystal, which can occur with the presence of some type of defect. The reversible work method is applied to calculate the concentration of the vacancies and the binding free energy between these point defects. Initially, this methodology is applied to a quantum solid described by a Jastrow wave function, to then be applied in our system of interest. A shadow wave function is used to model the hcp solid helium, whose con gurations are sampled by the Monte Carlo method using the Metropolis algorithm. Besides the determination of monovacancy and divacancy concentrations, our results indicate that there is not a tendency to form clusters of these defects, which could lead to a phase separation. Subsequently, we used the Peierls-Nabarro method to study linear defects like dislocations. With this purpose, we determined the elastic constants of material, this being the rst theoretical estimates of these properties for solid helium. Our model indicates that these linear defects have a tendency to separate into pairs of partial dislocations. ▼ Calls for an integrated food policy to tackle the new fundamentals of the food system have been regularly made by academics, policymakers, the food industry and civil society for over a decade in many countries but, despite some changes, much of the old policy framework remains entrenched. This gap raises questions about why policy innovation has proved so difficult. This study responded to that research problem through a qualitative, interpretivist comparative study of how two countries attempted to improve their policy integration, via two specific policy integration projects: the UK’s Food Matters/Food 2030 process (2008-2010) and Australia’s (2010-2013) National Food Plan. It applied a conceptual framework fusing historical institutionalism and the public policy integration literature, focusing on the policy formulation stage. Fieldwork was conducted in both countries, including interviews with key informants; and publically-available documents about the policy projects and broader policy systems were analysed. The findings suggest the two policy projects represent a food policy shift from single-domain ‘policy taker’, towards multiple domain ‘policy maker’, but both fell short of what might be classed as ‘integration’ in the literature. The research identifies how tensions between domains are sidestepped, and makes broader propositions around how multiple values and goals co-exist in this contested policy space, and the need for improved value agreement capacity. It also highlights a general lack of focus on integration as a process. It explores how the legacy of historical fragmented approaches, plus political developments and decisions around institutional design, and a more general trend of hollowing out of national government, impact on how integrated food policy can be formulated in a particular country setting. It therefore proposes an emerging ‘institutionalist theory of food policy integration’, conceptualising the dimensions of integration, and multiple institutional influences on integration attempts.

Les travaux présentés dans ce mémoire ont pour but de mieux comprendre la relation existant entre la culture du coton, le rôle de la femme et la sécurité alimentaire et nutritionnelle dans une région cotonnière du Burkina Faso. Les résultats démontrent une forte prévalence d’insécurité alimentaire et de dénutrition infantile et une relation dynamique entre la culture du coton, les activités quotidiennes des femmes, la sécurité alimentaire des ménages et la nutrition infantile. La charge de travail de la femme ou le temps passé à travailler au champ de coton ont été positivement associés au score d’insécurité alimentaire, tandis que leur pouvoir décisionnel sur la gestion du revenu familial l’était négativement. La qualité des soins prodigués aux enfants semblait quant à elle avoir une influence sur l’état nutritionnel des enfants. Privilégier les interventions communautaires visant à accroître le niveau d’autonomisation des femmes semblerait alors être nécessaire pour réduire la faim et la malnutrition infantile dans cette région du monde.

The work presented in this thesis is designed to better understand the relationship between cotton cropping, women’s role and food and nutrition security in a cotton growing region of Burkina Faso. Results show a high prevalence of food insecurity and child malnutrition and a dynamic relationship between cotton cropping, women’s daily activities, household food security and child nutrition. Women's workload or the time spent they are working in the cotton field were positively associated with the score of food insecurity, while their decision-making power on the management of family income was negatively. The quality of childcare appears to influence children’s nutritional status. Giving priority to community interventions to increase women's level of empowerment seems to be necessary to reduce hunger and child malnutrition in this region of the world.

Cette thèse porte sur l’adaptation des étudiants en période de transition. Elle repose sur une comparaison franco-canadienne entre étudiants primo-entrants et étudiants internationaux vietnamiens. Dans l’objectif d’apporter un éclairage nouveau sur les processus de leur adaptation, nous avons intégré deux modèles théoriques permettant de distinguer deux niveaux d’adaptation, l’un dit « local » commun à tous les étudiants, l’autre dit « international » spécifique aux Vietnamiens (Black, Mendenhall & Oddou, 1991), dans lesquels viennent s’imbriquer deux dimensions du processus : l’adaptation psychologique et l’adaptation socioculturelle (Ward & Searle, 1991). La personnalité anxieuse, suivie de l’attachement adulte et des tracas quotidiens, apparaissent comme le fondement explicatif de l’adaptation des étudiants, quels qu’ils soient, tant à un niveau psychologique que socioculturel. A ces aspects « locaux » pour les Vietnamiens, s’ajoutent deux enjeux interculturels : l’identification à la culture d’origine et les différents réseaux de socialisation. Les résultats soulignent également pour les différents groupes d’étudiants une fragilisation des modèles internes de l’attachement, des différences culturelles dans leurs potentialités à former un corps étudiant et à se socialiser au sein de l’université ainsi que la présence d’individus à risques : ces derniers seraient dans l’incapacité de faire face efficacement au stress induit par la période de transition.

This dissertation focuses on students’ adaptation in transition. It is based on a French-Canadian comparison between freshmen students and international Vietnamese students. With the aim to shed a new light on the process of their adaptation, we integrated two theoretical models which allowed us to distinguish two levels of adaptation, one considered as “local” and common to all students, the other as “international” and specific to Vietnamese students (Black, Mendenhall & Oddou, 1991), in which are embedded two dimensions: psychological adaptation and sociocultural adaptation (Ward & Searle, 1991). Anxious personality, followed by adult attachment and daily hassles, appeared as the root of students’ adaptation both at a psychological and sociocultural level. In addition to these “local” aspects, Vietnamese have to deal with two cross-cultural issues: their identification with culture of origin and the different social networks in their environment. Results also highlighted for all students a weakening in their working models of attachment, cultural differences in their potential to form a student body and to socialize within the university and, the existence of individuals “at risk”: these students appeared to be unable to cope effectively with the stress induced by the transition.
