▼ Diabetes and hypertension are major contributors to cardiovascular disease which is the leading causes of death worldwide. The impact of diabetes on the cardiovascular system is high, with almost 75% of diabetic deaths being directly attributed to some form of heart or blood vessel disorder. Diabetes and hypertension induce significant damage to the heart, blood vessels and kidney. Stevia, Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni, a naturally sweet herb, has been used for several hundred years as an anti-diabetic and cardiotonic in South America. In limited human and rat trials, stevia reduced hypertension, improved insulin-sensitivity and decreased blood lipids following hypertension and diabetes. The current study aimed to identify any cardioprotective benefits of stevia in reversing and/or preventing further cardiovascular damage in animal models of type 1 diabetes and hypertension compared to the calcium channel antagonist verapamil. A mechanistic study on normal healthy tissues was also performed to establish a putative mechanism of action of stevia. The mechanistic study showed that stevia could reduce cardiac action potential duration (APD) at 20%, 50% and 90% of repolarisation, dilate vascular beds and decrease isolated ileum contraction induced by electrical field stimulation (EFS) and M3 receptor agonist carbachol. In short, our results suggested that the mechanism of action of stevia is multimodal since stevia showed beneficial modulatory effects on cardiovascular and gastrointestinal tissues which can be related to calcium channel antagonism, activation of M2 muscarinic receptor function, and via enhanced nitric oxide (NO) release. The second study examined the chronic effects of hypertension in the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR). Chronic dosing (8 weeks) of stevia (200 mg/kg/day) or verapamil (4 mg/kg/day) were compared in the SHR to establish if either compound could reduce the severity of cardiovascular remodelling and peripheral neuropathy following hypertension. Stevia treatment prevented maladaptive left ventricular changes, restored cardiac contractility and end systolic pressure and reduced diastolic stiffness in the hypertensive rats. Stevia also normalised liver and kidney weights compared to body weight/tibial length ratio in the SHR rats. Stevia reduced oxidative stress and inflammation as observed by significant increase in TAC and serum NO levels comopared to the unrtreated SHR. Verapamil improved systolic and diastolic functions, except for the heart rate which was significantly reduced in the SHR. The final study utilized the streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type 1 diabetic rat model with the effect of stevia and verapamil again investigated for an eight-week treatment period. The results showed that both stevia and verapamil treatment improved the maximal contractile and relaxation responses of thoracic aortic rings and mesenteric arteries, improved serum NO synthesis, total anti-oxidant capacity and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels following diabetes. ▼ Reading on digital devices is becoming increasingly common. Large markets have developed for both physical reading devices and web-based reading platforms. Each device and platform offers distinct features and supposed advantages, but the experience of reading a printed book is still considered superior by some reviewers. This study sought to identify the strengths and weaknesses of digital reading and to determine whether, or how, design factors influence the reader's experience. An initial evaluation of digital reading devices identified the most common form factors and established parameters to be evaluated by testing subjects in subsequent surveys. Two surveys were conducted, which involved subjects reading texts on various platforms. The subjects were students, faculty or staff of the Rochester Institute of Technology. The first survey, conducted in the RIT Cary Collection, concentrated on physical devices. The devices selected were an Apple iPad, laptop computer, Apple iPod Touch and Amazon Kindle, with a paper booklet representing traditional reading media. Nineteen subjects read a short story on each device and evaluated their experience on a paper questionnaire. Subjects were asked to identify strengths, weaknesses and difficulties encountered with the interfaces. While reading, subjects were timed and observed to measure average reading speed and interaction with the devices. Reading in a web browser on a laptop was consistently disliked by subjects. This reading platform was considered to have the greatest room for improvement and became the focus of the second survey. The second survey was conducted online and involved subjects reading texts in a web browser. The initial sample for this survey was 52 subjects, though only 12 of those subjects (23%) completed the entire survey. The first portion of this survey involved subjects reading short texts for comprehension at three sizes and evaluating them for reading speed and comfort. The second portion involved subjects reading on three different web-based reading platforms and evaluating their experience with each. Google Books, Treesaver and Open Library reading platforms were selected for the survey because they offered a range of features. Google Books represents a utilitarian design attitude, Treesaver presents content in an editorial design format, and Open Library displays scanned pages of public domain books. In the second survey, text sizes perceived by subjects as read fastest were actually read slowest on average, indicating that readers' perceptions of reading speed do not necessarily correlate with performance. The Open Library reading platform displays scanned pages of books printed before digital reading was conceived and which therefore were not designed for reading on platforms with low resolutions, variable screen sizes, and non-paper substrates. This platform was disliked by a majority of subjects and presented the most interface difficulties. A pesquisa tem como objetivo geral verificar como as revistas brasilei-ras Superinteressante, piauí, Nova Escola, Info Exame e Você S/A retratam os livros digi-tais, tendo em vista aspectos característicos dos e-books e valores do campo jornalístico. Os títulos selecionados compreendem cinco segmentos temáticos ligados ao universo do livro digital e são as publicações mensais com maior circulação no país em 2013. Os pro-cedimentos metodológicos adotados abrangeram as pesquisas bibliográfica e documental, bem com a análise de conteúdo. Através da leitura das 58 revistas que compuseram o corpus da pesquisa (a totalidade das publicações dos títulos em 2013), encontramos 34 textos que forneciam informações sobre os livros digitais. Após a análise quantitativa e qualitativa dos textos, apontamos os principais resultados: 1) É restrita a participação das revistas segmentadas na divulgação de informações a respeito dos livros digitais. 2) As revistas não estão preocupadas em educar/formar o leitor para a apropriação do livro digital. 3) O assunto livro digital não é merecedor de destaque nas revistas onde aparece. 4) Os textos apontam a reconfiguração dos papéis dos atores da cadeia do livro.

The research has as a main purpose to verify how Brazilian magazines as Superinter-essante, piauí, Nova Escola, Info Exame e Você S/A describe e-books, considering its char-acteristic features and its values on the journalistic field. The methodological procedures used were bibliographic and documentary research as well as content analysis. We re-viewed 58 magazines that constitute the research corpus (the entire publications of 2013) and found 34 texts that contained information about e-books. After a quantitative and qual-itative analysis of these texts we point out five main results: 1) The targeted magazines influence on the release of information about e-books is restricted; 2) The magazines have no interest in educating/encouraging the reader on how to acquire an e-book; 3) The sub-ject “e-book” is not worthy of a highlighted piece in the journal where it’s exposed; 4) The texts underline a reconfiguration of the actor’s role in the book chain.

▼ Digital Publishing and its influences on literacy Thesis Essay In my thesis I analyse how digitalisation has influenced the publishing business, their products and its digitaliation’s effects on our reading habits, focusing especially on the literary development of children. The digitisation of printed media has caused immense changes for publishing companies, who see themselves forced to adapt to modern technologies and changing reading preferences of clients. Critics see the shift from the printed book to digital media as the end of the print media, which is however, according to new studies, a rather premature conclusion. Additionally the digitalisation of print and the increasing number of people reading on-screen has given cause to fear about its effects on our ability to read and understand texts. Critics express concerns about multimodality –the combination of different modes like i.e. images and writing, which is omnipresent in most digital reading—as distractive and destructive to our understanding of text. This is especially of importance in regard to children’s literary development and the fact that multimodality always has been a main characteristic in children books. Now multimodality is gaining even more importance due to the new possibilities that digital books offer. The topic is quite recent so it is impossible to draw definite conclusions, however I aim to show, based on recent studies and case studies, that the these concerns are rather arbitrary and not in line with children’s actual intuitive understanding of digital media and multimodality. Digital Artefact My digital artifact consists in the creation of a digital catalogue for the Spanish children book publisher TakaTuka. The digitisation of catalogues is one example of changes and advantages that digitalisation implies for publishing. A digital catalogue offers advantageous features such as direct links or near limitless space for information. In addition, it saves on printing and distribution costs and time. For the design and production of the catalogue I used Adobe InDesign and Joomag.

A sociedade é cada vez mais dependente das tecnologias e os seus meios fazem parte do nosso dia-a-dia. As escolas não são indiferentes e ao longo das últimas décadas têm vindo a fazer investimentos para modernizar o sistema de ensino através de programas direcionados para a inclusão das Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC) em contextos concretos de aprendizagem. No entanto, este processo de modernização tem sido lento. Algumas das causas prendem-se com a imaturidade dos programas, pela resistência dos professores e a falta de formação dos mesmos. No campo oposto estão os alunos, que familiarizados com as tecnologias, consumidores e utilizadores assíduos anseiam alterações nas práticas de ensino. É nesta direção que se encontra o nosso estudo, o qual se pretende integrar as TIC nas práticas educativas utilizando um e-book interativo numa escola onde predominam os suportes analógicos. Este estudo é baseado na conceção de um manual digital interativo para 3º ano do 1º ciclo sobre a temática do Estudo do Meio. A metodologia que nos pareceu mais adequada foi a metodologia de estudo de caso, na medida em que o produto desenvolvido foi testado e verificada a sua funcionalidade em contexto concreto de aprendizagem. O Estudo de Caso foi desenvolvido no Agrupamento de Caíde de Rei – Escola Básica de Vilar de Torno e Alentém. Os resultados obtidos conferiram as seguintes vantagens: cada aluno trabalhou ao seu ritmo; tendo sido possível replicar as vezes que os alunos acharam necessárias mediante as dificuldades apresentadas. A partir da informação recolhida diariamente, dos dados obtidos por questionário preenchidos pelos alunos e através da entrevista realizada às professoras foi possível concluir que a utilização de um e-book com atividades interativas incrementa a motivação dos alunos na aprendizagem, consideram ter maior empenho e participação reconhecendo que as aulas são mais interessantes. Referiram que o e-book contribui para aprender melhor os conteúdos e manifestaram a preferência de aprendizagens em ambiente digital. Neste contexto, o software Edilim teve um papel importante devido à facilidade de utilização e à diversidade de atividades pelo que pode ser um bom meio para procedermos a algumas modificações no âmbito de ensino. Dado que neste momento não é possível substituir o manual analógico por um manual digital ou e-book pode ser utilizado como um auxiliar do manual escolar por exemplo um livro de exercícios, com jogos e atividades que propiciem momentos prazerosos na aprendizagem.

▼ The 108 year history of the Mount Morgan mine has been told and retold but little attention has been paid to the sixty-one year history of Mount Morgan Limited. It is now over twenty-three years since production ceased, so fewer people remain who were associated with this period of the mine history. Most are unaware of the reasons for its success or failure, and of the management decisions that ultimately affected the lives and prosperity of the Mount Morgan community. Consequently, there have been areas of narration, especially in this latter period, which have drawn either praise or criticism, often without sufficient and accurate historical detail by way of comparison. The thesis addresses these shortcomings across the relevant areas, drawing principally on primary material contained in company archives lodged with CQUniversity, Rockhampton and supported by pertinent secondary literature. By examining areas of ‘praise or criticism’ in the operation of Mount Morgan Limited, and placing these within the context of the broader mining community, the thesis offers a new analysis of the history of the mine. The thesis establishes that, while returning significant dividends to its shareholders, and providing a guaranteed income, social and educational support to generations of Mount Morgan people, the Company failed to expand its activities and initially disregarded the surrounding environment. In evaluating these commercial, social, operational and environmental areas of its operations, the thesis addresses not just the perceptions of the triumphs and disappointments of Mount Morgan Limited, but also examines its relationship with the broader mining community, both national and international. It addresses the extent to which the Company followed or departed from industry practices elsewhere, including the extent of influence exerted by directors and senior staff, the introduction of a welfare scheme and social initiatives, as well as its persistent, but ill-fated attempts to diversify its operations.

The publishing industry currently faces a re-birth due to the rise of Information Technology (IT),which has created new production and distribution channels. Paper is no longer the only form for publishing; tablets, e-reader, smart phones, and Personal Computer (PC) screens are gaining anincreasing market share. The Leaf Project aims to position itself in the publishing industry by creating a new business start-up exploiting this IT revolution. We divide the publishing industry into three different parts: Production is concerned about content creation and acquisition.Distribution concerns delivering the content to consumers.Access and presentation is about how the content is presented to consumers and how they can access this content. In The Leaf Project we are developing a new way to distribute publications, along with creating an end user interface to browse and access this content. The project is divided into four different masters theses. One is concerned with creating the distribution network, and another is concerned with creating the end user interface. This thesis provides a market analysis and proposes a business model. The fourth thesis will consolidate the complete project by developing a business plan. When looking into the three different parts of the publishing industry, this commercialization plan first benchmarks the proposed end user application and the distribution network by comparing them with currently marketed products. Following this the thesis will examine what is the best content that could be distributed through our network. The final part of this thesis will recommend a business model based on the outcomes of the first two parts of this thesis. This thesis project should be useful for the fourth thesis project that must create an appropriate business plan and this thesis should also help the technical developer by providing market analysis that can be used to guide technical decisions.

Os livros digitais interativos sao presencas cada vez mais constantes no cotidiano das criancas. Diante desta tendencia, esta dissertacao tem como objetivo analisar a nova forma de apresentacao das historias infantis nos tablets, um suporte midiatico que completa em 2014 quatro anos de existencia. A pesquisa compreende o contexto historico das plataformas de leitura, as origens dos recursos interativos ainda em papel, as funcionalidades presentes nos livros digitais ampliados, tambem conhecidos como enhanced e-books, suas caracteristicas, seu processo de producao, as mudancas provocadas na narrativa e uma analise de tres casos para compreensao mais aprofundada do funcionamento do livro no tablet \"A Menina do Narizinho Arrebitado\", \"Quem Soltou o Pum?ë \"Dans Mon Reve\". Esta dissertacao oferece um breve panorama dos livros digitais interativos para as criancas, que nao elimina o livro impresso, como se chegou a cogitar no inicio, mas oferece uma nova experiencia de leitura multimidia, sem deixar sua essencia de lado: a de continuar sendo um livro.

The interactive digital books are constantly increasing presence in childrens quotidian. In the face of this trend, this thesis aims to analyze the new way of presenting childrens stories in tablets, a media support that completes in 2014 four years old. The research comprises the historical context of reading platforms; the origins of the interactive features still on paper; the features present in extended digital books, also known as enhanced e-books; its characteristics; production process; the changes induced in the narrative; and an analysis of three cases for further understanding of the functioning of the book in the tablet \"A Menina do Narizinho Arrebitado\", \"Quem Soltou o Pum?ë \"Dans Mon Reve\". This dissertation provides a brief overview of interactive digital books for children, which does not eliminate the printed book, as it was considered at first, but offers a new multimedia reading experience, without leaving aside their essence: to remain a book.

▼ In this thesis, I have looked at the influence of the internet on academic publishing and, as a consequence, academic culture and practice. I have tried to present a plausible narrative on how academic work on a daily basis has changed and what consequences there are for the role of books. The efficient digital distribution of journal articles through the digital library have made the article relevant in two new ways: (1) it is now the single most important means of scholarly output, at the cost of books; and (2) it is almost always accessed digitally, often not through the journal title, but directly through a full bibliographical reference search request or as one of the results of a search query on topic, key word or other sort of search entry. The instant availability of almost all peer-reviewed journal articles ever published is a great contribution to the world of science, for obvious reasons. It comes with certain costs to it as well, however. Finding and accessing articles with such ease makes the book a relatively more difficult-to-access item. Especially for a new generation of students, the book seems less relevant. They are presented with articles more than books, and come from a background in which books are less prominent. For scholars, an article is easier to write than a book, but it counts as more when their citation indices are put together. A vicious circle comes into being. As an academic’s publication record becomes more important in order to keep his job, he will choose to write more articles. University libraries focus on presenting the articles efficiently in a digital manner and make the library into a computer workspace instead of a place for searching and reading books. The digital availability of articles leads to less diversity in sources and the older the titles the less they are cited. Publishing companies are faced with lower demand for books and are struggling to make ends meet financially. Every step of this circle in itself doesn’t lead to a catastrophe, but it is the feedback loop that strengthens itself and the aggregate outcome that causes us to be worried about the future of books in academia. Com o propósito de contribuir com dados empíricos para as discussões sobre o livro eletrônico e o futuro do livro, a pesquisa buscou compreender e analisar as formas pelas quais estudantes que ingressaram na Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) em 2011 se apropriaram dos conteúdos da lista de leituras obrigatórias do vestibular, composta por 12 títulos. Partiu-se do modelo da Ordem dos Livros de Roger Chartier (1998), aplicando-se o con-ceito das listas de vestibular como forma canônica desenvolvido por Ana Cláudia Fidélis (2008). O planejamento metodológico da dissertação seguiu o modelo de Pesquisa em Comuni-cação de Maria Immacolata Vasallo de Lopes (2003). A amostra foi escolhida levando em conta dados quantitativos preexistentes da pesquisa Retratos da Leitura no Brasil (2008). A observa-ção envolveu 263 estudantes de primeiro ano de nove cursos da UFRGS, um de cada Grande Área da Capes, que responderam a um questionário fechado autoaplicado. O formulário incluía questões sobre a quantidade de livros recomendados lidos na íntegra ou parcialmente e os su-portes adotados, além de quantidades de downloads e leituras eletrônicas. Foram empregadas categorias descritivas elaboradas a partir de autores do referencial teórico como John B. Thomp-son (2008), Ted Striphas (2011) e José Afonso Furtado (2006). A análise dos dados quantitati-vos originados pelo levantamento foi realizada de forma qualitativa. Também foi realizada em menor escala triangulação empregando técnicas qualitativas, mesclando-se observação direta e entrevistas telefônicas. A análise dos resultados apontou que houve predominância da leitura em livro impresso, suporte empregado por 90% dos respondentes. O livro eletrônico foi consultado ou lido por pouco mais de 30% dos candidatos pesquisados. Este grupo minoritário dividia-se em dois subconjuntos principais: os que utilizaram o meio digital por se constituir em uma for-ma facilitada de acesso aos títulos e os que empregaram o suporte eletrônico como apoio ao estudo, conjugado com meios impressos. Também se observou que a distribuição em domínio público teve a tendência de determinar os títulos mais lidos eletronicamente. A observação a-pontou ainda grande variedade de configurações de relacionamento com os diferentes suportes de leitura, tanto em torno de perfis individuais quanto por área temática dos cursos. Colateral-mente, observou-se que candidatos dos cursos mais disputados tiveram a tendência de ler mais títulos da lista recomendada, com prevalência da forma impressa.

Darbe laikomasi nuomonės, kad skaitmeninei knygai taikomi kokybės kriterijai turi būti maksimaliai pritaikyti vartotojui, todėl objektas nagrinėjamas žvelgiant iš vartotojo pozicijos, atsižvelgiant į jo lūkesčius ir vertinimus. Skaitmeninės knygos skaitymo procesas traktuojamas kaip vartotojo noras gauti informacijos bei ją suvokti. Darbo tikslas – diferencijuojant kriterijus pagal jų svarbumą vartotojams, sukonstruoti skaitmeninių knygų kokybės vertinimo instrumentą (kokybinių kriterijų rinkinį), kuris atskleistų skaitmeninės knygos specifiką bei raiškos ypatybes. Remiantis išanalizuota skaitmeninės knygos samprata, jos galimybėmis, skaitytojų poreikių, patirties ir pageidavimų analize, nustatoma, kokie kokybiniai knygos skaitymo aspektai turi daugiausia įtakos vertinant skaitmeninės knygos kokybę. Žengiamas kokybiškai naujas žingsnis – pirmą kartą skaitmeninės knygos kokybės tyrimuose, pritaikant Herzbergo motyvacijos-higienos teoriją, rinkinio sudedamosios dalys (kokybės kriterijai) yra diferencijuojamos ir reitinguojamos dviem aspektais. The object of research is the quality of the digital book conveyed in terms of quality criteria. These are some distinguished features, assessment measures whose presence or absence determines the quality of the object. The object is analysed from the user’s perspective in consideration of his/her expectations and assessments. The research takes the approach that the quality criteria attributable to the digital book should be tailored to the needs of the user to a maximum level. By differentiating the criteria according to their importance to the users, this research aims at building up the quality assessment instrument for digital books that would reveal the specifics and expressive characteristics of the digital book. Referring to the explored concept of the digital book and its potential, the analysis into the needs, experience and wishes of readers, it is going to be established as to which qualitative book reading factors have the biggest impact on the quality assessment of the digital book. A new qualitative step is taken as it is for the first time in digital book quality research, by using Herzberg's motivation-hygiene theory, the components of the toolbox (quality criteria) are differentiated and rated under two aspects. Disertacijoje tiriama skaitmeninės knygos kokybė, išreikšta tam tikrais išskirtais kokybės kriterijais, vertinimo matais, kurių buvimas arba nebuvimas nulemia objekto kokybę. Esta pesquisa foi efetivada com a finalidade de mapear os artefatos que são atualmente denominados 'livros digitais', caracterizando-os a partir do cruzamento dos recursos próprios do meio digital com as principais especificidades dos livros impressos. A metodologia utilizada abrangeu revisão bibliográfica e observação do objeto de estudo. Para alcançar o objetivo proposto, realizou-se um resgate histórico, identificando as características associadas à noção de 'livro', levando em consideração as modificações ocorridas a partir de sua materialidade. Após esse estudo, foi possível compreender a remediação dos livros impressos nos e-books, principalmente naqueles que podem ser acessados através de e-readers e tablets. Outro recorte abordado por esta pesquisa focaliza a identificação e o registro dos recursos que vêm sendo explorados nas produções que estão sendo chamadas de livros digitais. Efetuada a revisão bibliográfica, foram estudadas as potencialidades do hipertexto, da multimídia e da interatividade dentro do livro eletrônico. Ademais, foram comentadas diferentes maneiras de o leitor se aproximar e interagir com o conteúdo da obra, através da utilização dos recursos citados. Antes de se realizar a análise dos artefatos em questão, foi necessário, ainda, aprender mais sobre a materialidade dos mesmos, percebendo como o hardware, o software e o conteúdo interagem entre si, restringindo, assim, as possibilidades que podem ser ofertadas ao leitor. Na tabela final de análise foram avaliadas as particularidades das seguintes macrocategorias: Identificação, Acesso, Funcionalidades, Potencialidades do meio digital, Aproximação da ideia de livro impresso (remediação) e Projeto gráfico. A partir do estudo teórico e empírico realizado, percebeu-se que o livro é um artefato com propriedades flexíveis, decidindo-se, por isto, propor uma série de princípios que, juntos, possam ser utilizados para caracterizar esse tipo de publicação, independente de ela ser digital ou impressa. Logo, chegou-se a conclusão de que o e-book é um conteúdo digital com as mesmas características de um livro e que pode explorar, além do texto e da imagem, recursos da mídia digital, tais como interatividade, som, vídeo e animação. Através das características predominantes dos artefatos analisados, foram identificados os seguintes tipos de livros digitais: customizável, PDF, digitalizado, multimídia e interativo.

This research has as its purpose to map out the artifacts so-called ‘digital books’ nowadays. They were characterized from a crossing between printed books main specificities and those related to digital environment very own resources. ▼ As the digital world is becoming more and more a part of people's daily lives, the publishing industry has begun to evolve. The traditional print codex form of the book has been challenged by new technologies that have brought traditional books into the digital world – e-books. Reading has become evermore digital. Many of the current technologies for e-reading, whether it is the devices or the applications, are lacking navigation tools which limit the reader's experience in comparison to reading a printed book. The goal of this thesis project was to design an application for reading e-books, to be used on tablet devices such as the iPad, focusing on solving the issues of user wayfinding and orientation for readers of all ages. To solve the problems of user wayfinding and orientation in e-reading applications research was focused on typography, book design, digital publishing and e-books, e-reading devices, and application design. All aspects related to books, both traditional and digital, as well as application design and user navigation were taken into consideration in order to come up with the most effective solution possible. A survey about e-reading applications was conducted to find out what readers would want when using an e-reading application. The project entailed three phases-graphic design, interactive design, and website design. A two column layout was developed to help users better understand what they were viewing as they navigated through the demonstration. The left column provides a project description and guides users through each section of the project. The project was broken down into four main sections-iPad, iRead, Library, and Book. The right column is a demonstration of the iRead application prototype where users can click on all icons, menus, and options to test how the application would work. I have designed iRead, a prototype for an e-reading application for the iPad. User testing proved the application prototype to be successful. The iRead application allows readers to navigate through an e-book in a manner that is parallel to that of reading a printed book. Advisors/Committee Members: Jackson, Chris, Pankow, David.
