▼ Ways of managing organizational conflict are as varied as its causes, origins and contexts. The purpose of conflict management, whether undertaken by the parties in conflict or whether involving the intervention of an outside party, is to affect the entire structure of a conflict situation so as to contain the destructive components in the conflict process (e.g. hostility, use of violence) and help the parties possessing incompatible goals to find some solution to their conflict. Effective conflict management succeeds in (1) minimizing disruption stemming from the existence of a conflict, and (2) providing a solution that is satisfactory and acceptable. In line with Ikechukwu Eze (1999), the culture of the people has a strong influence on the behaviours exhibited by such people in the organizations which they work. No wonder then why we took the cultural perspective in trying to understand the best ways of managing the dysfunctional Organizational Conflict. In this work we looked at the background of study and stated the problems from where the objectives of the study were derived. The relevant research question and significance of the study were also postulated. The researchers went ahead to lay the theoretical foundation of the study by reviewing some related and relevant literature on the topic. In chapter three, we presented a methodological framework which put in place the various methods, procedures and techniques through which the study was conducted, these include: the source of data collection, methods of data collection, population of the study, sample of the study, and method of data analysis. The data collected were analyzed and the following results emerged: i) Swedish bosses are democratic, always using their intuition and striving for consensus in their organizations. On the other hand, Nigerian bosses are autocratic, assertive and decisive. ii) In Sweden, the wide in salary between the top and bottom of the organization is very narrow. The reverse is the case in Nigerian organizations where the wide in salary between the top and bottom of the organization is very high. iii) In Swedish organizations, privileges and status symbols for managers are frowned at, task prevails over relationship, and hierarchy in their organizations means an inequality of roles established for convenience. On the contrary, in Nigerian organizations, privileges and status symbols for managers are popularized, relationship prevails over task, and hierarchy in their organizations reflects the existential inequality between higher-ups and lower-downs these. iv) In Swedish organizations, management is seen as management of individuals. The reverse is the case in Nigerian organizations where management is mainly seen as management of group. v) In Swedish organizations, conflicts are resolved by compromise and negotiation. But in Nigerian organizations, conflicts are basically resolved by: fighting them out; avoidance and smoothing. vi) Swedish employees have emotional need to be busy, an inner urge to work hard. ▼ Neopentecostalism is currently one of the most expressive religious phenomena in Brazil. According to the Brazilian Census Institute's database (IBGE), Neopentecostals represent the fastest growing movement among Protestants in the country. Brazilian Neopentecostalism has some unique aspects that distinguish its member churches from the mainline denominations. Since its birth, the most significant difference has been its commitment to Prosperity Theology. Lately, however, a new constituency has developed within Neopentecostalism: the Brazilian Apostolic Movement. Like other Neopentecostal churches, they have the Prosperity Gospel as their theological grounding. On the other hand, however, they differ from other Neopentecostal churches by having an apostle as their leader. The aim of this work is to investigate the Brazilian Apostolic Movement in order to comprehend its culture and identity. The study will demonstrate that, believing that Christians should be healthy and wealthy, Brazilian Apostolic Movement leaders speak and preach in a way that resembles what psychoanalysis calls narcissism. Consciously or not, the movement risks contributing to the establishment of a Christian narcissistic culture – similar to the concept of cultural narcissism, developed by Christopher Lasch. That being the case, the study explores how Christian theology might respond to this reality. Is it possible for a Christian community to have narcissistic patterns as a key element of its identity? To respond to that question, I draw from the work of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. His book, The Cost of Discipleship, focuses particularly on Christian life and ethics, and approaches these issues by through the lens of an intense reflection on what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ – both as an individual and as part of a community. Drawing from Bonhoeffer's work, I suggest three concepts as a significant theological response and challenge to the narcissistic aspects identified in the BAM churches I studied: Cheap grace, theology of the cross, and uncertainty of life.

▼ Yellowstone holds a special place in America’s heart - a young nation’s Eden - and the crown-jewel of modern preservation. As the world’s first national park, it is globally recognized as the prototype of natural purity and goodness. But in recent decades, Yellowstone and its surrounding areas have become a lightning rod for environmental controversy, an area plagued by social disunity and intractable political struggle. Science and policy efforts are especially protracted in the GYE, involving hundreds of diverse interest-organizations, dozens of state agencies, three separate state governments, hundreds-of-thousands of local residents, and millions of concerned Americans. Accordingly, management decisions in the GYE rely on a hyper-rationalized form of governance that privileges technical facts, scientific analysis of nature, bureaucratic administration, and legal formalism. This raises the following puzzle: why, with the flood of expert scientific, legal, economic, and political efforts to resolve disagreements over Yellowstone, are matters not improving? Despite all of these efforts, why do even the most minor issues still recurrently erupt into impassioned and long-lasting disputes? My argument is that this modern obsession with scientific, legal, and economic reasoning misses out on deeper cultural mechanisms driving the conflict in the first place. Put more specifically, I argue that any sociological account of this conflict should be built upon a more empirically accurate and philosophically sophisticated model of human persons and cultures, that does not presuppose narrow or deterministic motivational frameworks, but understands that the “why,” in the end, is a question of morality - perhaps even “spirituality” - stemming from our lived experiences as part of human cultures, shaped by narratives and moral orders that tell us most fundamentally who we are, why we are, what we should do, and why it all matters. Drawing on work in cultural sociology and moral theory to make this argument. I reorient our attention to the sorts of “whys”‘ that make life meaningful for different cultures, and propel them forward toward particular ends, and not other ends. These are the sorts of answers to the “why” questions that we need to incorporate into our theories and methods if we hope to improve our understanding of the human-environment relationship more generally. My sociological approach focuses less on the individuals themselves, and more on the cultural, moral, and spiritual contexts in which stakeholders are embedded, shaping their beliefs and desires. Somewhat implicit in my argument is that, for a variety of reasons, these deeper moral and spiritual meanings are often ignored, muted, and misunderstood. ▼ Conflict resolution research has resided at both the individual and group level for the many years. However, recent findings have provided evidence for the existence of conflict resolution strategies at the cultural level. As these recent findings indicate, the existence of such resolution styles at that macro level can have great implications on organizational outcomes. Therefore, the first goal of this study was to examine if these conflict resolution cultures would predict outcomes such as job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and psychological withdrawal behavior. Similarly, research on P-O fit has also provided some very interesting insights into employee behavior and attitudes. Given the idiosyncratic nature of conflict resolution and the recent findings mentioned in the previous paragraph, the second goal of this study was to examine if perceptions of congruence between an individual’s resolution style and the organization’s resolution style would affect job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and psychological withdrawal behavior. Finally, it was determined that perceptions of resolution (i.e. was the conflict constructively resolved) would be an appropriate and rather informative mediating variable for the relationships proposed above. Data was collected using a web-based survey software, which garnered 212 participants for the analysis. Evidence was found to support a majority of the proposed hypotheses. All three-conflict resolution cultures (collaborative, dominant, and avoidant) predicted the outcome variables in the directions consistent with both logic and the literature. Similarly, perceptions of resolution did mediate six of the nine proposed relationships between the resolution cultures and the outcome variables. Two of these mediation analyses were not conducted due to an insignificant initial bivariate correlation. Support was also found for all three proposed direct effects between perceptions of congruence and the proposed outcome variables. Finally, perceptions of resolution mediated the relationship between perceptions of congruence and all three-outcome variables. Again, the directions of these findings were consistent with both logic and the literature. Temos problema ir aktualumas. Daugelis organizacijų tyrėjų bei sociologų atliko tyrimų, susijusių su organizacijos kultūros suvokimu, jos įtaka verslo sėkmei, darbuotojų pasitenkinimui darbu ir kita. Tačiau, analizuodami naujausią literatūrą ir ypatingai apžvelgę Lietuvoje atliktus organizacijos kultūros tyrimus, atrandame tik keletą skirtingų organizacijos kultūros vertinimų, o tai rodo, kad ši sritis nėra visapusiškai ištirta ir kiekvienas naujas tyrimas yra vertingas. Taip pat, atsižvelgiant į tai, kad iki šių dienų teigiama ar neigiama konfliktų reikšmė, išlieka vienu prieštaringiausių dalykų, naudinga yra apjungti organizacijos kultūros ir konfliktų valdymo studijas į vieną ir pažiūrėti ar egzistuoja abipusis ryšys tarp jų. Researches which were done by scientists allow to affirm that school‘s organizational culture is poorly investigated. Not every school looks after its image maintenance. Nowadays opoosite between students and teachers becomes stronger. It is significant to analyse school‘s organizational culture and stimulate the interest of successfull collaboration forms between organization‘s members. An object of the research – forms of collaboration and organizational culture in the school. The aim of the work – to reveal a phenomenon of the organizational culture and to find out a significance and benefit of collaboration and organizational culture in the school. Tasks of the work: 1. ▼ This thesis examines a particular phenomenon of urban conflict, specifically when it’s in response to the appropriation of a space. The definition of appropriation as it relates to this thesis is; to take possession of, or make use of exclusively for oneself, often without permission. Examples of this has manifest in many forms and scales. Although I refer too many, there is one occurrence I’ve given particular attention too, a local eminent domain battle in Norwood, Ohio. A shift in State Supreme Court rulings on the use of Eminent Domain has sparked legal battles across the nation. In many states it is now legal for a city to use the power of eminent domain, cease your property and turn it over to a private developer. This shift in law has reignited a national debate regarding land use. How do we balance the boundaries of private land ownership and an individual right, versus what is deemed as the communal greater good? How do we define the term “greater good” and when should Eminent Domain be used in order to achieve it? This is one example of many emerging spatial conflict which have direct planning and architectural consequences. Ultimately, this led to questioning the traditional ideology of architecture as being purely a service profession. For the most part, the inherent allegiance of this traditional role has kept architects out of the fight. But shouldn’t the architect, who is generally viewed as the keeper of the built environment, respond in the vast emerging scenarios of spatial conflict? In modern society, it is the artist who has established a tradition of response in reaction to conflict. Therefore I have focused on four roles that the artist has employed as a means of provocation. Specifically, the roles of Instigator, Saboteur, Mediator and Documenter, are used to inspire a series of responses to different aspects of spatial conflict. The intent is not aimed at providing answers but rather provoking more questions regarding these four roles as a means of generating architectural response. In many scenarios the tensions that exist between opposing parties over space are ripe opportunities to propose new spatial relationships. In other scenarios the response is an intentional attempt to heighten tensions, in certain occasions resolution occurs through the elevation of conflict. The process of collage is used throughout the thesis as an underlying antagonistic medium. Collage is used because the act of collage making requires one to take an object out of its original context, place it in a new one - thus appropriating it, creating new tensions, relationships and readings. ▼ This study sought to investigate if there are common cultural elements for preventing and transforming violent conflict in selected patrilineal and matrilineal tribes in Malawi, as well as selected societies from other parts of Africa. The researcher argues that in both patrilineal and matrilineal tribes in Malawi, violent conflict prevention and transformation methods are inherently rooted in elaborate socio-political governance structures. This also applies to other societies in Africa, such as the pre-colonial traditional societies of Rwanda, the Pokot pastoral community in the North Rift of Kenya, the ubuntu societies in South Africa and the Acholi of Northern Uganda. The basic framework for these structures comprise the individuals (men, women and older children), as the primary building blocks, the family component comprising of the nucleus and extended families as secondary building block and traditional leadership component. Within these socio-political governance structures, individuals coexist and are inextricably bound in multi-layered social relationships and networks with others. In these governance structures, a certain level of conflict between individuals or groups is considered normal and desirable, as it brings about vital progressive changes as well as creates the necessary diversity, which makes the community interesting. However, violent conflicts are regarded as undesirable and require intervention. Consequently, the multi-layered social networks have several intrinsic features, which enable the communities to prevent the occurrence of violent conflicts or transform them when they occur, in order to maintain social harmony. The first findings show that each level of the social networks has appropriate mechanisms for dissipating violent conflicts, which go beyond tolerable levels. Secondly, individuals have an obligation to intervene in violent conflicts as part of social and moral roles, duties and commitments, which they have to fulfil. Thirdly, the networks have forums in which selected competent elders from the society facilitate open discussions of violent conflicts and decisions are made by consensus involving as many men and women as possible. In these forums, each individual is valued and dignified. Fourthly, there are deliberate efforts to advance transparency and accountability in the forums where violent conflicts are discussed. However, in general terms, women occupy a subordinate status in both leadership and decision-making processes, though they actively participate in violent conflict interventions and some of them hold leadership positions. In addition, the findings show that the tribes researched have an elaborate process for transforming violent conflicts. ▼ This thesis investigates the advantages and limitations of applying culture to the analysis of violent conflict and peacebuilding, with a particular focus on liberal peacebuilding in Sierra Leone. While fully aware of the critique of the concept of culture in terms of its uses for the production of difference and ‘otherness,’ it also seeks to respond to the critique of liberal peacebuilding on the account of its low sensitivity towards local culture, which allegedly undermines the peace effort. After a careful examination of the terms of discussion about culture enabled by theoretical approaches to conflict in Chapter 2, the thesis presents a theoretical framework for the analysis of cultural aspects of conflict and peace based on the processes and effects of meaning-generation (Chapter 3), developing the conceptual apparatus and vocabulary for the subsequent empirical study. Instead of bracketing out the recursive nature of cultural theorising, the developed approach embraces the recursive dynamics which arise as a result of cultural ‘embeddedness’ of the analyst and the processes which s/he seeks to elucidate, mirroring similar dynamics in the cultural production of meaning and knowledge. The framework of ‘embedded cultural enquiry’ is then used to analyse the practices of liberal peacebuilding as a particular culture, which shapes the interaction of the liberal peace with its ‘subjects’ and critics as well as framing its reception of the cultural problematic generally (Chapter 4). The application of the analytical framework to the case study investigates the interaction between the liberal peace and ‘local culture,’ offering an alternative reading of the conflict and peace process in Sierra Leone (Chapter 5). The study concludes that a greater attention to cultural meaning-making offers a largely untapped potential for peacebuilding, although any decisions with regard to its deployment will inevitably be made from within an inherently biased cultural perspective. ▼ This thesis attempts to look at the experiences of Japanese housewives who have spent a period of time in a foreign Western country before returning to Japan. It is an ethnography presented in the context of what it is like to become a stranger. In it I try to examine not only the initial impact of the cultural encounter, but also the day-to-day sense making as it occurs in the lives of the women, and the change in perspective which becomes apparent upon return home. The data were collected in the form of approximately 50 tape recorded, in-depth interviews conducted in English. Because the relevant experiences of the women varied so greatly, an unstructured open-ended interview format was employed. The informants were wives of scholars, government representatives, or businessmen. All were residing or had resided in a foreign Western country solely because their husbands were studying or working abroad. About one-third of the interviews were conducted in Vancouver, and the remainder in Japan. Most interviews took place in the informant's home. Many of the women bring with them expectations based on past experiences, handed-down information, and taken-for-granted ideas which prove to be an inadequate basis for sensemaking in the new environment. Confronted with this anomaly, they often suffer disorientation and depression. It appears that time, familiarity, and exposure to the new socio-cultural environment ameliorate the sense of dislocation. But perhaps the most important factor is the individual ability to draw from varied sources of information and to integrate this information into the patterns of thinking and behavior. This can lead to cultural competence, which is more than just being able to perform in a socially acceptable manner. It involves both knowing the rules of society well enough to abide by them and understanding when one can successfully violate, bend or break the established tenets. Upon returning to Japan many women feel that their encounter with another culture has affected their perceptions of self and home. Following the initial impact of return, many began to question the differences and similarities of the socio-cultural environments they had encountered. They also began, again, to question themselves. Some women found this self-examination and reflection to be a long and difficult process, but others experienced immediate insights and changes in perspectives.

▼ In honor cultures (e.g., Turkey, Southern US), self-worth depends on one’s own perception and on other people’s opinions about oneself, and reputation is very important. In dignity cultures (Northern US, Western Europe), self-worth mainly depends on the individual and cannot be taken away by others. In this work, I investigated how people from an honor culture, Turkey, and from a dignity culture, northern US, emotionally and behaviorally responded to two types of conflict: A true accusation of a transgression and negative performance feedback. Honor has three facets common to these two cultures: Social respect (being respectable in society), moral behavior (being honest), and self-respect (feeling proud of oneself). I proposed that true accusations of a transgression would be a complete honor threat because they threatened all three facets, whereas private negative performance feedback would only be a self-respect threat. I conducted an online survey (Experiment 1) and a laboratory study (Experiment 2) to compare the two cultures. In Experiment 1, participants read conflict scenarios and imagined themselves as the target of the scenario. They indicated how they would feel and behaviorally respond to the conflict source (e.g., the accuser). In Experiment 2, participants were actually accused by an experimenter for cheating on a task or received negative performance feedback. Their emotional and behavioral responses were measured with multiple methods. Results revealed that for people from Turkey (an honor culture), being rightfully accused of a transgression was more humiliating and anger-provoking than receiving poor performance feedback. Moreover, Turkish people became more defensive in response to rightful accusations compared to negative performance feedback. I also found that northern Americans (a dignity culture), perceived rightful accusations and negative performance feedback similarly humiliating and anger-provoking, and they became similarly defensive in response to these two threats. These results are in line with the importance and centrality of reputation and social respect in honor cultures and the emphasis on achievements and positive self-esteem in individualistic dignity cultures. The findings of this work may have implications for many contexts such as politics, work relations, and romantic relationships.

▼ This dissertation starts from an interest in protracted environmental conflict in the United States and takes the stance with respect to environmental conflict (1) that a threat to a resource very quickly becomes experienced as a threat to the ways of life dependent upon that resource, and (2) that when multiple ways of life are dependent upon that same resource – and that resource is threatened – and all wish to sustain their ways of life – then the manner in which they all relate to the resource and to each other must be transformed, such that both the resource is restored and the ways of life are sustained. In other words, it is a situation of conflict transformation, rather than of conflict resolution. From that beginning stance, the unfolding of the dissertation uses a health care analogue to provide both a structure for and a way of thinking about what is presented. In Volume One, in the role of customary practice is cast conflict resolution as it is customarily practiced in America. It is asserted (1) that mainstream American conflict resolution practice is based upon an ethnoconflict theory and ethnopraxis that flows unerringly from the attitudes, aspirations, expectations that characterize the modern American Metro Middle Class; (2) that the American model would be appropriate within America when everything about the situation and the people involved in the situation was in agreement with the ethnoconflict theory and ethnopraxis upon which the American model is based; and (3) that it would be inappropriate when something about the situation and the people involved in the situation was NOT in agreement with the ethnoconflict theory and ethnopraxis upon which the American model is based. It is proposed that this ‘something’ can be that the people have a different ethnoconflict theory and ethnopraxis, and/or that the situation is not about rights, rules, and/or individual interests. In Volume Two, given the stance with respect to environmental conflict that a threat to a resource very quickly becomes experienced as a threat to the ways of life dependent upon that resource, in the role of the person who is not well is presented a history of the Klamath ecosystem and the ways of life dependent upon the Klamath watershed from historic times of pristine environmental well-being to the current times of environmental degradation. In Part One, the story of the Klamath over the period from 1848 through 2000 is told in such a manner that if (and when) any member of any player group in the Klamath may read this history, they would be able to say “You have heard Our story – not only the events and experiences that We bring together to define Our sense of who We are and have been over time, but also the emotional investment in being who We are and the emotional turmoil We feel when We experience who We are as threatened.” In Part Two, it is asserted (1) that the people of the Klamath watershed have an ethnoconflict theory and ethnopraxis that understands conflict as a tear in the web of… Advisors/Committee Members: Goodale, Mark (advisor).
