▼ For over 30 years, authors have documented continuous improvement techniques that can help to improve the performance of the manufacturing sector. However, recent research has found that the uptake of these available techniques for the purpose of improving business performance is comparatively low as a result of barriers preventing their adoption by manufacturing SMEs. The aim and focus of this research is to develop a user-friendly framework which would guide both industry practitioners and other researchers to achieve business process improvements in an SME manufacturing environment. The framework developed in this study consists of four stages: 1) review of the current process to be improved; 2) identification of possible improvement in terms of prompts; 3) knowledge know-how to support transfer of proven continuous improvement techniques; and 4) continual review of the process to quantify the improvements. The framework uses a combination of three continuous improvement techniques: histograms, brainstorming and Five Whys to identify actions for management implementation. Such techniques have been merged to speed up and simplify the process of root cause analysis, thus encouraging SMEs to document their successes. This will enable other SMEs to learn from their experiences as well as from the knowledge gained by being part of the communities of practice. The methodology used in this research is mixed methodology and involves a combination of literature review, pilot study, a postal questionnaire with 50 respondents and two case studies. These case studies were then used to validate the framework, based on five structured interviews. Case studies involving two manufacturing SMEs include manufacturers of high-volume, low-cost components and low-volume, high-cost components. It was concluded that the root cause of a problem can be found by using: brainstorming, histograms and Five Whys. Sometimes, it was also possible to merge these techniques as one, thus reducing the analysis time. The case studies generated substantial savings, £27,500 and £1,366,055 for SME 1 and 2 respectively. Overall the benefits of the framework to SMEs include: using the developed user-friendly framework for improved business performance, knowledge transfer of learning continuous improvement techniques, learning about other SME successes and potential cost savings that could accrue for SMEs when they apply it. The framework developed in this research, therefore, has reduced some of the barriers which have prevented uptake of innovative techniques over the last 30 years.

▼ Continuous improvement is a companywide process of focused and
continuous incremental
innovation. Deming described it as a philosophy that consisting of an
improvement initiative
that increase successes and reduce failures. It involves everyone working together to make
improvements without necessarily making huge capital investments. This study aims at
selection, development, and implementation of
continuous improvement model by taking
Crystal Tannery S.Co as a case, which is newly established and the only specialized Tannery
of Ethiopia in finishing leather from semi-processed leather inputs i.e. wet blue, split and
crust. The study applies
continuous improvement model to realize
improvement in safety,
quality, and productivity which basically promote
continuous training, teamwork, and
continuous improvement unit establishment. The finding of the study shows a better
improvement over the current performance i.e. percentages of low grades decreased from
28.7% to 11.8%, frequency of reworks reduced in average from 2.25 times per batch to 1.02
times, customer satisfaction enhanced from 42.8% to 54.3%, lack of awareness on basics
concepts of safety, quality, and productivity increased in average from 40.7% to 51.8%,
reduction in a worker complaints from 45% to 22.85%, eliminating potential risky situation
which is expected to cause loss of at least 1.43 million, and total cost saving of 212, 604 birr
per year especially in furnace oil consumption and rework cost. For small and midsize
business company the approach followed was business-oriented and lean; it does not include
many committees, task forces and meetings that experts and other
improvement methods
uses. Instead, this approaches focus on getting things done quickly and efficiently. Hence, the
researcher utterly recommends implementing this tested model for continual and dynamic
improvement in similar and other business scenarios.

▼ Continuous Improvement (CI) is an integral part of hospital administration. This study examined the relationship between five CI variables against six hospital criterion measures of, wait times to prepare a room, patient costs per day, waiting time for lab results, reportable errors, patient satisfaction, and employee satisfaction. The research was conducted using information gathered from 17 returned surveys out of a possible of 206 hospitals in three northwestern states.
A survey was developed and administered to provide hospital level assessments of five CI variables and six hospital performance measures. Differences between efficiency and effectiveness CI tool usage were also investigated. Differences in tool usage between large, medium, and small hospital size groupings were also investigated. A statistically significant difference was observed between small, medium, and large hospitals in their responses to this survey. There were 12 significant correlations reported between specific CI tools and individual hospital performance measures. Nine of these significant correlations indicated poorer results for those hospitals that reported more frequently CI tool usage than those hospitals that did not.
For hospitals, the findings of this study indicated that the majority of the hypotheses did not support the strongly held and prevailing notion that the more individuals trained in CI tools and implementation practices the more the employee will be actively involved in
continuous improvement. The results of this study also did not support some of the prevailing ideas related to the use of CI tools and implementation practices and performance
improvement. Support was found to indicate that for the participants in this study, effectiveness tools were used more than efficiency tools. The results of this study also supported some previous research indicating that organizational size may be an important factor in the level of application of CI tools.

▼ Employee participation in
continuous improvement activities has been pointed as a key behaviour for the sustainability of CI programmes. Previous research has identified different variables that enhance this requested participation, but a holistic approach is needed to explain the impact that organizational enhancers have on the personal ones. This article contributes to this holistic approach by introducing a model which represents how the organizational drivers foster an appropriate environment that strengthens employees´ participation. Three companies from Northern Spain were studied, and surveys were processed using Partial Least Squares. Results shed light on the inner relationships between drivers themselves and how they influence the organizational environment. Based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour, it can be explained how these organizational level variables strengthen personal perceptions fostering employees´ participation can be explained. This model would allow organizations to understand how to use their efforts to enhance employees’ participation.

▼ Continuous Improvement initiatives continue to report high failure rates. This research initially aims to explore the reasons for implementation failure and then address the identified themes through the development of a new framework. The research is focussed on a specific sector and region in order to provide findings tailored to that audience. Several stages of research have been completed. Initially, a Systematic Literature Review identified eight main themes that most contribute to the failure of Continuous Improvement initiatives in manufacturing organisations. These eight themes were subsequently validated and ranked by influence towards initiative failure. The next phase centred around the creation of a new implementation framework. This involved firstly the evaluation of current implementation guides through a Critical Literature Review to understand both the strengths and weaknesses of each. This identified that there is not currently an implementation framework or model that fully satisfies the objectives of this research. This is the main research gap. A new conceptual framework for implementing Continuous Improvement in UK manufacturing companies was therefore developed by incorporating the strengths of current offerings as well as the findings of the previous research phases. An important element of this research is the desire to bridge the gap between academic findings and real world application. This translation of theory into practice should be the objective of any operations management research. To achieve this the conceptual framework required extensive evaluation by the intended user groups. This was achieved through a two stage Delphi study. Through this approach consensus was reached on the content and structure of the updated framework. Finally, a focus group was organised to allow a separate group of individuals, not previously involved in the research, to discuss the framework. This served to further validate the framework. Whilst being of practical use, the new framework also contributes to theory; specifically change management, motivation and organisational learning theory. As with any research, limitations exist. These have been identified throughout and where practical have been addressed to ensure robust research methods are employed. The main limitation of the research is the absence of practical application of the final framework. This was due to the absence of opportunity to do so, as well as the extended timeframe associated. A future research direction is to complete this action research or case study research in order to provide a final validation of the framework.

▼ This research presents results of innovation management practices and sustainability of
continuous improvement. Innovation is recognized as a growth tool for economies in general however not all economy sectors have innovation as a strategy. This research served as a case study to analyze how innovation is managed within innovative firms to help less innovative sectors, such as the wood products industry, to become profitable. Among the observed innovation management practices, this study was able to identify the use of
continuous improvement to support incremental innovation. Although,
continuous improvement is well known and accepted, there are still challenges to reach a sustainable state of
continuous improvement. This research also addresses the difficulty in sustaining
continuous improvement through a longitudinal case study.
A literature review was conducted to identify factors influencing the sustainability of the
continuous improvement. These factors were gathered within a research framework which functioned as the main source to establish the questionnaire used as the research tool. Utilizing this tool, the study evaluated the hypotheses relating to the effects of time, location and company type on the behavior of the enabling and inhibiting factors, and the relationships among them. Results demonstrated that time has no effect on factors affecting the sustainability of the
continuous improvement, although changes affect how the factors are perceived as success factors in sustaining
continuous improvement. The study also concluded that type of company and location impact how the inhibiting and enabling factors are perceived as supporters of the sustainability of the
continuous improvement. Finally, the study revealed that these factors are correlated among them, thus sustainability is the result of a dynamic multifactor process rather that an unique factor.
In addition to this new framework, the study also developed a self-assessment tool to be used for
continuous improvement practitioners. With this tool, the new developed framework can be continuously monitored and proper and informed action can be taken by managers to address any observed gap in sustaining
continuous improvement. Finally, the study also brings an example of interdisciplinary research which gathers quantitative methods from the statistics field, and qualitative methods from the business and social science fields.

▼ This study was to examine how Human Resource Development (HRD) practices may impact business performance via
Continuous Improvement (CI) activities as a whole, and the relationships among them within the context of various levels of employees and different functional areas at one North American Automotive Supplier. Dimensions of HRD practices – HRD framework (Garavan, 2007) have been adapted as independent variables, sixteen indicators adapted from the Performance
Improvement Model (Jorgensen, Boer & Laugen, 2006) have been explored as three dependent variables. In addition, six CI abilities have been examined as mediators from the CI Maturity Model (Bessant & Caffyn, 1997) and two different moderators have been defined based on the real practices of the target population. In brief, only the first hypothesis was positively supported and the second and the third one were not supported in the overall relationship.

▼ As a general rule, companies have focused most of their improvement initiatives in manufacturing and operations, leaving their internal service processes behind. This study presents a FRACAS process which is underperforming in terms of lead time. The process is studied in detail and the people who work with it were interviewed to find out how they think the process inhibits their work. The contribution this study makes is that it provides an example of what lean FRACAS could mean. The studied process presents itself as non-compliant with what the employees wish from such a process. This in turn causes these employees to underperform since they think that the process does not seem to provide value to neither themselves nor the customers.

▼ Despite evidence provided through decades of educational research regarding effective practices in high-performing, high-poverty schools, Mississippi continues to trail other states in improving student achievement outcomes (Annie E. Casey Foundation, 2016). Educational research provides evidence regarding the importance of school leadership, the specific practices school leaders engage in to bring about sustainable
improvement, and school leadership preparation and support to improve struggling schools (Elmore et al., 2014; Manna, 2015; Fullan et al., 2006; The Wallace Foundation, 2010). Research also acknowledges leadership to improve failing schools adds complexity and requires a particular set of leadership knowledge and behaviors (Elmore, 2008b; Marzano et al., 2005; Muhammad, 2009; Reeves, 2009). In order to consider solutions to high-poverty struggling school concerns in Mississippi, the quantitative research study was designed to compare the capacity for
improvement in high-needs improving and high-needs struggling Mississippi schools. Net gain or loss of Quality of Distribution Index (QDI) scores and School Performance Level (SPL) points over five years of school performance data determined schools’ research designations of improving or struggling. Matched school pairs included one improving and one struggling school matched on baseline QDI score, size of school, and school poverty level. A total of 19 schools participated in the research study—12 improving and seven struggling. Of the 19 schools, 14 were matched with a comparable school for a total of seven for matched-pairs testing. The focus of the research was measurement and comparison of internal coherence (IC) defined as “…a school’s capacity to engage in deliberate improvements in instructional practice and student learning across classrooms, over time…” (Elmore, Forman, Stosich, & Bocala, 2014). Participating staff and principals completed the Internal Coherence Survey (Elmore & Forman, 2012). Resulting scores were tested in ten hypotheses using paired- and independent-samples t-tests, Pearson’s correlations, and Kendall’s tau-b. The primary hypothesis considered the difference in IC in high-needs improving and struggling schools. A paired-samples t-test indicated a statistically significant difference in the capacity for
improvement in the two school types. Statistical testing for eight supporting hypotheses confirmed, either through statistically significant results or non-statistically significant results, the viability of internal coherence is a factor to consider in additional research and as a focus for an
improvement strategy for high-poverty schools in Mississippi.

Due to fast changes in the economic, market, and technological environment, there is a demand of new management models aiming to improve products, processes, services and management systems in order to make business performance sustainable and provides a platform of growth. Therefore, companies have been implementing activities, formal or informal, structured or not, which in some way it results into an improvement, a progress of large-scale action,…

Lean
production förväntas ge upphov till continuous improvement samt elimination of waste.
Utifrån detta har forskare formulerat 14 principer vilka sammanfattas i The Toyota Way
model.
kontrollprocesser i åtanke.
Formerna sammanfattas i studiens
aspektens utgångspunkt återfinns främst i lean productions grundförutsättningar, såsom

▼ The purpose of this paper is to present a case study
on the application of the Lean Six Sigma (LSS) quality improvement
methodology and tools to study the analysis and improvement of
facilities management (FM) services at a healthcare organization.
Research literature was reviewed concerning whether or not LSS has
been applied in healthcare-based FM, but no such studies have been
published. This paper aims to address the lack of an applicable
methodology for LSS intervention within the context of
healthcare-based FM. The Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and
Control (DMAIC) framework was followed to test the hypothesis that
LSS can improve the service provided by an FM department
responsible for the maintenance and repair of furniture and
finishes at a large healthcare organization in the southwest United
States of America. Quality improvement curricula and resources
offered by the case study organization equipped the FM department
to apply LSS over the course of a five-month period. Qualitative
data were gathered from pre- and post-intervention surveys while
quantitative data were gathered with the Organization’s
computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) software.
Overall, LSS application proved to be useful for the intended
purpose. The author proposes that application of LSS by other FM
departments to improve their services could also be successful,
which is noteworthy and deserving of continued
research.

Quality is actually viewed as a main structure - both for companies and individual consumers. Consumers and markets are increasingly informed about what they consider to be the component "quality" in the value proposal. However, for there to be an increase in quality that occurs without an increase in costs, an improvement should occur continuously - Kaizen. The present work aims to contribute to a better understanding of the Kai¬zen's philosophy. Furthermore, it wants to understand the application impact in the industry, through the perception from the employees of the Portuguese company Tesco.
This way, 30 surveys were collected by the Tesco's employees, in order to deduce what the general knowledge about the Kaizen philosophy, and how it had an impact on day-to-day business and operations.
From our results, in general, all of Tesco's employees are satisfied with Kaizen's philosophy and with the impact that its application has had on their dairly taks. The value of each Human Resource was clearly essential to the success of this philosophy.

sugestões quanto a desenvolvimentos futuros.

No entanto,

utilizadores do serviço.
Portuguese Public Administration has suffered several modernizations and changes,
through which new management instruments and philosophy have been introduced,
namely at the levels of self-evaluation and continuous improvement of the quality of the
services provided.
Quality is a management philosophy that has became fundamental for the current
functioning of any Organization. The adoption of this philosophy in public services
requires a significant effort to change the cultural patterns prevailing in Public
Administration.
The Common Assessment Framework (CAF) was created to introduce Total Quality
Management principles in the Public Administration, mostly an assessment and continuous
improvement culture.
Thus, the assessment and self-assessment of the Public Administration performance has
become more relevant in the sense that it guarantees a permanent progress. This is only
possible by means of a reflection on the implemented practice, in order to meet the needs
and respond to the demands of today`s society.
In this context, the present work aims to develop a methodology that showed that the…

▼ The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of small group
communication, investigate to what extent small groups communicate within their minibusiness
areas within a mining group. The communication role and the influence it has
within an organisation, and what structure it takes within the bigger scheme of the
organization were also investigated. Many people and organisations form small groups to
perform certain jobs, but they do not have a clear understanding of what constitutes a
group, essentially what is it that a group can and cannot do.
Small groups are always present and employees are always members of one or more
small groups. Establishing a precise definition of a small group that is generally accepted
by everyone has proven to be a challenge as most scholars come up with different
interpretations and definitions of small group communication.
A quantitative research method was used for this study as it was deemed suitable for this
type of research, but one of the shortcomings of this method is that the data obtained
through this method of research is not suitable for generalisations to any population. It is
therefore emphasized that it is not the objective of this research to generalise the results
of the study, but that it is applicable to the small group communication within the mining
group investigated. The sample and data collected were small.
A total of 150 questionnaires were sent to two De Beers' mines, Venetia Mine in
Limpopo Province and Voorspoed Mine in the Free State Province, requesting employees
via their supervisors and line managers to participate in the small group communications
survey. The survey revolved mainly around the company's overview of its Continuous
Business Improvement (CBI) business system which involved small group initiatives and
communication.

▼ The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (SA) set out its Vision 2030 of itself as a significant Knowledge Economy to position itself competitively in the world and in the Gulf region. The Government charged the education sector to prepare young people and build the creativity, innovation and technical skills for the country’s future. The Ministry of Education (MOE) selected TQM and has made strategic investments to achieve this strategic transformation in education.
Despite this substantial investment in the infrastructure, teaching skills, information technology and advancement programmes for women to enter the workplace, the implementation of TQM has not so far delivered the outcomes expected in secondary schools (Bank, 2008; Chapman and Miric, 2009; TIMSS, 2011).
This research proposes that a programme that primarily focuses on the hard aspects of change, without participatory leadership and without integrating the people concerned (as a soft programme would), cannot achieve sustainable transformation.
An empirical study was designed to investigate staff perception of TQM implementation in girls’ secondary schools in the Kingdom. The 525 respondents from 61 schools in five districts of Riyadh suggest that the most pivotal critical success factors (CSFs) limiting the development of TQM culture were Top Management Commitment; Training; Tools and Techniques; and Reward and Recognition.
The perception results were then used as the baseline to design a model that integrates the hard and soft CSFs of TQM in five stages of maturity. This assessment model could be used to support the schools and the MOE in objectively assessing the readiness of schools to implement TQM and identify the next major obstacles to reaching the next stage. The design approach of a maturity model is innovative in using context perception data as the baseline for designing the stages of maturity and the success factors the progress of change, making its use appropriate for the girls’ schools in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

▼ Quality management and continuous improvement are well known and many successful implementations of improvements regarding quality has been made over the recent dec-ades by many organizations. This means that there are lots of different tools, strategies and implementation techniques available for organizations today. However, globalism have made this area an interesting aspect for researching cultural impacts in quality management and continuous improvement for organizations operating in many differ-ent countries.
The purpose behind this thesis is therefore to study how a multinational company han-dles international quality management and how national culture impacts quality man-agement and continuous improvement efforts in a multinational company. Initially, a frame of reference was developed to examine current available research of quality man-agement and continuous improvements, as well as cultural aspects regarding differences in national culture and how this impacts an organizational culture that operates in sever-al countries world-wide.
We used a qualitative research approach and within that performed a case study of Vol-vo Trucks. Primary data was collected from interviews and other material acquired from Volvo Trucks.
The results showed that power distance was a value that impacted improvement work the most. This was seen in different stages of improvement efforts.

▼ The current developments in the world result in increasing tensions between different countries. This increasing tension requires materials that are available when needed. Major budget cuts have resulted in the disposal of six multipurpose frigates which has reduced the total amount of frigates owned by the Royal Netherlands Navy from twelve to six. Because of this significant reduction, a high availability of the remaining frigates and oceangoing patrol vessels is required. However, the availability of these vessels is not sufficient at the moment. In this research a suitable definition for the term 'availability' was found in the term 'operational availability' which is a function of the maintenance process. With this definition the operational availability of the multipurpose frigates, air defence and command frigates and oceangoing patrol vessels was calculated. The calculation showed that the operational availability of these ships does not meet the operational availability requirements. The maintenance process was analysed by using the Delft Systems Approach to determine the problems that cause the low operational availability of the ships. The analysis showed a significant amount of problems that influence the operational availability of the ships in a negative way. This study developed a continual process improvement dashboard that can be used by the Royal Netherlands Navy as a tool to improve the operational availability of their existing ships. Besides that, the dashboard can also be used in the design process of a new ship class to achieve the desired operational availability for the new ships.

▼ This study investigates the current innovation and development process approaches, with the intention of understanding and elucidating the internal dynamics of
continuous quality
improvement strategies within the disruptive technological innovation and development set-up of the French South African Institute of Technology (F'SATI) in the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). The research objectives were to look for answers within a innovation and development process approach by investigating the flexibility of the development process, setting up of an
improvement targets, monitoring and measuring performance, applicability, and the use of risk-based thinking, lean manufacturing principle applications, and possible means to sustained good working practice for future innovation and development activities. Mixed research methodology was used to obtain meaningful and value-added results. Data was collected through group interviews (n1= 3 groups), a structured questionnaire completed by innovation and development full-time employees (n2 = 10 employees) and thorough review of documented organisational knowledge. Thematic data analysis was used to analyse qualitative data from the interviews, SPSS software was also used to analyse the quantitative data, and Cronbach's Alpha was used to test quantitative dataset reliability. Furthermore, an expert judgment approach was used to validate the results obtained from the research study through presentation of research findings to the innovation and development team. It was evident from the findings that even though
continuous improvement approaches and a well-established systems engineering approach was in place, personnel capacity and resource capabilities, adopted organisational policies and procedures, and constant application of internal operational procedures remains a challenge within the F'SATI. The study recommends that the innovation and development centre needs to increase personnel capacity, with respect to required technical and interpersonal skills, more resources that are fit for purpose, to making use of value-adding business relations with external providers through a benchmarking approach, and to be released from dependency on the CPUT procurement system, in order to improve turnaround and delivery times.

▼ The study explored the possibilities for utilising benchmarking for continuous improvement in Vietnamese higher education using a quasi-ethnographic approach. A pilot benchmarking exercise was conducted in the domain of university governance in three public universities in Vietnam to create an authentic setting for the investigation. The research revealed a genuine need for benchmarking between Vietnamese universities, however a complicated mix of socio-cultural, political, and educational factors inhibit effective implementation of the method. The study recommends cultural and model-borrowing approaches to overcome these barriers.
