▼ With the rise of global tourism industry, the number of Chinese tourists travel outbound for varies purpose has a great increase, aiming at the huge market resulting therefrom, a wellness resort project is brewing in Lohja with the support of local government. The thesis is based on this real project. The primary aim of this project is to develop a wellness resort which consists of three main sections, they are respectively Wellness and healthcare center, Villa area and Cancer rehabilitation center. The healthcare center is situated in the center of the resort, the villa area and the cancer rehabilitation center are distributed around it. This master thesis mainly explores the solution for the Wellness and healthcare center of the resort, which is not a traditional type of healthcare center. As a multi-functional building, it combines functions of medical treatment, spa hotel, restaurant, recreation center, conference and training school. This thesis mainly focuses on dealing with relations of different functional zones, how do they function themselves, co-relate and coordinate to each other; besides, organizing fluent and effective visiting flow for multiple target groups; meanwhile, exploring the possibilities and attractiveness of the new type hospitality building, attempting to create fabulous experience atmosphere for users. In the first place, the author would be discussing general information about the project, the introduction will expose the location, origin of the project, the intention and target of the project. Further, this thesis would be organized, based on my personal design process, starting from analyzing the situation of the site and challenges steamed from the building design tasks, guiding readers to learn the project comprehensively. In the end, this thesis would elaborate the final design through floor plans, sections, perspectives to present my thinking and studies for an ideal solution for the late-model Wellness and healthcare center.

My graduation project is a part of Chicago Lakeside graduation studio in the Chair of Complex Projects. The goal of the studio was to develop a complex architectural solution based on analysis and economic and social strategies, integrated within existing fabric on different scales. The result of the first stage of my thesis work is an urban strategy for the South Chicago neighbourhood revitalization through the development of the Health City cluster on the former South Works site. Based on the extensive research done in a group of 4 people, we have chosen healthcare related functions as potentially the most applicable to create a brand, attract investments and provide essential facilities for the neighbourhood. In my individual design research I aimed to develop a building that will become a linking element between the functional elements in the research/ education cluster, existing neighbourhood and the public facilities, developed within the Health City master plan. I believe that a Conference Centre could become a link, providing collaboration space for the Science Cluster and attracting the public by facilities, exhibitions, public events and not last – an architectural quality. My project is based on the relationship of old and new: a new multifunctional space within the historical framework. Situated at the beginning of the long strip of the linear park, connecting the South Chicago neighbourhood & Lake Michigan, the conference centre plays an important role in the composition of the campus. Connecting the pedestrian routes, spanning from west to east and from north to south, the building becomes a linking element not only functionally, but also spatially. The building is concealed behind the walls, with only the external envelope visible, reflecting the sky above. The conference centre represents a multifunctional space- a centre of public activity both for the campus and the neighbourhood.

▼ The primary goal of this study was to identify key success factors for the management of a conference centre in South Africa. This goal was achieved by firstly portraying an overview of the conference industry in South Africa. Secondly, a literature study was conducted in order to determine the aspects in the literature that are regarded as of vital importance in managing a conference centre. Thirdly, the results of the empirical research were discussed. Lastly, conclusions were drawn from the research and recommendations were made with regard to further research. From the literature study, aspects of strategic management, financial management, marketing management, human resource management and management of operational aspects were identified as being important in the management of a conference centre. These aspects were used to compile a questionnaire. The objective of the questionnaire was to measure the importance that conference centre managers attach to the identified elements. Questionnaires were e-mailed to 250 conference centres. A total of 100 questionnaires were received back. The study population consisted of a database as compiled by the researcher from the Direct Access Conference Handbook (2004) and the Africa Conference Directory (2006/7). Questionnaires were also handed out personally to exhibitors at the INDABA Tourism Exhibition (2006). From the responses to the questionnaire it can be deduced that conference centre managers regard the aspects of strategic management, financial management, marketing management, human resource management and management of operational details as important to very important. A factor analysis was done to determine the key success factors in managing a conference centre. The following factors were identified, namely to: • Provide a conference centre with a functional layout and the correct variety of activities; • perform marketing management; • ensure that operational aspects are in place; • do proper planning; • provide an attractive venue and conduct a post-conference evaluation; and • perform human resource management. Conference centre managers have to apply the above-mentioned key success factors to ensure that the conference centre is successful over the longterm.

▼ This study examined the perceived importance of availability of ICT-based features and technical support on meeting plannersâ recommendation/selection of a conference center. In addition, this study attempted to explain relationships between meeting plannersâ beliefs (perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use) toward ICT-based features and other factors: personal innovativeness of ICT (PIICT); perceived importance of the availability of technical support; self efficacy; and result demonstrability. A conceptually integrated and expanded model of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) developed by Davis (1986, 1989) was used as a theoretical frame. The subjects of the study were meeting planners who used the selected two conference centers for their meetings or were considering them for their future meetings. A total of 167 usable responses were gathered and the proposed model was empirically examined using the data collected. The results of the model test revealed that the expanded TAM with the integration of key factors provided a systematic view of the meeting plannersâ beliefs in selection/recommendation of a conference center with ICT-based features. In addition, factor analysis of the fifteen ICT-based features revealed three underlying dimensions based on meeting plannersâ perceived importance of the availability of each feature for a conference center selection: 1) high-speed wireless Internet; 2) network backbone; and 3) ICT-based service outlet. Specifically, high-speed wireless Internet was the most important ICT-based determinant of a conference center selection/recommendation to all types of meeting planners. Due to the exploratory nature of this study, the results provided limited facets of the impact of ICT-based feature and technical support on meeting facility selection/recommendation. Nevertheless, this study is the first research effort of its kind to investigate what type of ICT-based feature and technical support impact conference center selection/recommendation by different types of meeting planners the most. The results revealed that corporate meeting planners consider wireless Internet and a fast network more important in selection than other types of meeting planners do. The availability of ICT-based features was less important to association meeting planners when they make a conference center selection. This study also identified that there is a serious lack of knowledge in terms related to network backbones across all types of meeting planners. Technical support, especially on-site technical support, was perceived as very important to all types of meeting planners. This study also identified that meeting planners with high PIICT possess stronger confidence in using and visualizing the advantages of ICT-based features. Thus conference centers should make efforts to measure meeting plannersâ PIICT and use the score effectively for their marketing of ICT-based features. ▼ In the fall of 2007, 3.9 million students took at least one online course, reflecting an online education growth rate of 12.9 percent. Many online students are nontraditional, possessing one or more of the following characteristics: delayed enrollment, part time attendance, full-time worker, financially independent as related to financial aid, dependents other than a spouse, single parent, a GED or did not finish high school. While these students bring diversity and life experience to the classroom, they are often ill-prepared for college writing. Though they need help, hectic schedules make it difficult to meet with a writing consultant. This study investigates whether synchronous writing center tutorials can effectively address this client population's needs. Currently, there is a dearth of scholarship relating to online writing tutorials, particularly synchronous tutorials. This two-year study of 189 face-to-face clients and 90 online clients employs quantitative and qualitative research to determine (1) the demographic profile of online users, (2) reasons clients meet online, (3) help sought online, (4) online client preparation, (5) client perceptions of online sessions, and (6) advantages and disadvantages of online sessions. Data were culled from a client questionnaire, online session logs, and consultant and client interviews. Statistically significant differences in client demographics between face-to-face and online users were found in age, ethnicity, and gender: online clients are younger, are more likely to be white, and are more likely to be male. Clients meet online primarily for convenience; however, there is no correlation between distance from campus and online client usage. There were no significant differences in client preparation. Spelling was the only statistically significant category in help sought: online clients seek more spelling help than their face-to-face counterparts. Face-to-face and online clients both viewed their sessions as successful with no statistically significant difference between the groups. Over one-third of clients reported technical problems during their session, and some clients expressed a preference for the emphatic cues found in face-to-face consultations. Advantages of online sessions included assistance with word processing features, the ability to make revisions to the working document, and the ability to record the session. ▼ This study explores L2 (second language) students' experience with the writing tutorial in a university writing center. University writing centers were initiated to provide writing instruction to L1 (first, native language) students and have since developed to enhance their writing ability for academic purposes. With the shift of the concept of literacy in the U.S, the focus of writing instruction in the writing center has moved from focusing on the rules of grammar and punctuation in order to “make better writing”, to a collaborative pedagogy aiming to “make better writers” (North, 1984). However, as international students are increasing in the American university, their concerns for writing in English as L2 writers seem to have some conflict between the writing center’s philosophy of writing instruction and the expectation that the international students have to fulfill their own needs to improve their writing ability. This study, in this light, was conducted to gain a better understanding of the work of writing centers with L2 students in terms of how the tutor and the L2 students interact with each other during the tutorial, focusing on issues and elements that inhibit the L2 students from improving their English writing ability. From the perspective of social constructionism, this study is framed by the notion of instruction as a conversational accomplishment, and learning in this view occurs as a social process mediated through interaction. With a particular focus on analyzing the talk and interaction transcribed form videoed tutorials and interviews with tutors and tutees, this study aims to examine the nature of L2 learners’ writing practices occurring in the one-to-one writing tutorials with the tutors and to provide a comprehensive vignette of experiences of L2 writers in the writing center. Nine issues that capture the dynamics of the international students’ interaction with Writing Center tutors emerged from the analysis of the corpus of data: six originate with the student as the tutee and the remaining three focus on issues that originate with the tutor. The nine issues are placed within three themes: language and culture, understanding of academic writing in English, and understanding the Writing Center’s pedagogy for instruction. The issues and themes identified from the findings suggest that there is a clear gap between the tutor and the tutee in their `Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)’ of writing instruction and neither the tutor nor the tutee are positioned to easily overcome the mismatch. The gap occurs from the different expectations of writing instruction from the tutor, supported by the writing center’s institutional history and philosophy and the student who comes to the Center with an established agenda based on their needs and judgments for their writing. This gap causes an inevitable tension between the quick-fix desire of the L2 clients and the long-term development philosophy of the L1 tutors. ▼ In May 2010 the plans for Malmö’s new Concert Hall, Conference Centre and Hotel were announced publically. The purpose of this thesis was to present strategy for communication in order to gain approval for the new concert and conference center from the inhabitants inMalmö and to incorporate the use of it in their everyday life. Material from the receiver’s as well as the sender’s perspective has been collected from qualitative interviews. Through group interviews we have investigated the general consensus of the inhabitants of Malmö regarding the investment, placing, offered events, expectations as well as how they collected information. We have interviewed two persons from the expert group working with the project, in order to define a target group for the communication work and to formulate a concrete message. Finally, we have interviewed a person at Uppsala Konsert Kongress, to collect his conclusions and perspective from the communication processes surrounding the opening. The material has been evaluated continuously and analyzed in relation to theories such as the Agenda Setting theory and Rogers’ Diffusion of innovations, explaining how individuals in a society react to an innovation. Our collected data has been put in relation to these theories, complemented by earlier research about image building and communication planning. Our analysis has given us a number of important values that will be vital in the communication process. The sender has to emphasize the variation in the events they offer to the public, as well as the fact that the centre will be a place for people to meet and exchange cultural values. The receivers also wish for these aspects. The target-group consists of all the inhabitants in Malmö, and has a wide diversity which puts pressure on the communicator to adjust message and communication channels according to the composition of the city. As a result of our research we present a strategy for effective communication actions, including the importance of face-to-face communication, feedback and media relations.
