▼ This study examined the alleged prevalence of Satanism in Zambia, with a particular reference to the Kabwe District during the period 2010-2013. The overall objective was to ascertain the claims and speculations on the alleged prevalence of Satanism in the district of Kabwe. The claims about the alleged prevalence of Satanism and the satanic scare were found by this study to be a reality in Kabwe, with eighty-eight per cent (88%) of the respondents acknowledging the alleged prevalence of the phenomenon. People’s knowledge of Satanism was mainly through rumours, messages from Churches and the electronic media. Studies on rumours (by Stephen Ellis, Gerrie Ter Haar and Jeffrey Victor) have shown that rumours can be investigated in the search for facts, especially rumours that offer plausible explanations for people’s shared anxieties. The above mentioned scholars argue that with efforts at corroboration, such as by interviewing key informants, the researcher can seek credibility on prevailing rumours by verifying or dismissing mere rumours from true stories. The assertions from scholars above justified the use of rumours as a methodological tool in this study. From sources of information the study relied on, claims about the alleged prevalence of Satanism in the district were investigated. The study refuted the satanic claims in a number of cases that were analysed, because they were mostly based on ‘pious legends’ hence lacked objective evidence. From the few incidents that suggested the prevalence of Satanism, there were still two basic problems faced in assessing their credibility: the first being the difficulty in determining the reliability of the confessions from informants who in this case either claimed they were ex-Satanists or served on behalf of Satanists. The second problem consisted in what seemed to be the inconsistency in the explanations of motives behind human killings found in the ritual murders. Some explanations did not suggest satanic motives. One example of refuted claims concerned the two locations within Kabwe district which were highly rumoured to be sites for Satanists, which were found by this study to be Freemasonry Lodges, contrary to what was rumoured.From the findings of this study, it was believed that people joined Satanism either because of the greedy for riches or to avoid poverty. It was also believed that other peoples joined Satanism unconsciously through luring methods used by Satanists. The study also found the satanic scare to have effects on the lives of people in the district. For example, it caused some people to become more committed Christians in their defence against the alleged satanic forces. Because people had associated riches to Satanism, certain individuals avoided getting rich for fear of being labelled ‘Satanists’. Advisors/Committee Members: Lubbe, G. J. A (advisor), Cheyeka, A. ▼ The problem of the existence of a devil is important, since it relates to other beliefs which a person or his religion may uphold. The orthodox Christian concepts of the divinity of Christ, the Fall of man, the Atonement, and the inspiration of the Bible are altered when a belief in Satan is discarded. The prophets of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) take a very definite stand concerning the existence of Satan. They declare that the devil and his angels exist and that they tempt and try to deceive men. L.D.S. scriptures, given through modern revelation, not only show that Satan exists and tempts men but also confirm the authenticity of the Old and New Testaments. However, these scriptures indicate that many passages relating to Satan are missing from the Old Testament. Therefore, on the testimony of modern scripture, the Latter-day Saints maintain that the concept of Satan did not evolve into Jewish thinking and literature by natural means. Rather, the prophets of God since the days of Adam have declard that Satan exists, and some of these prophets have come fact to face with him. Through modern scripture and latter-day prophets, the Latter-day Saints believe that Satan and his angels are spirits, in the image of men, who rebelled against God and were cast down to the earth and have been here since men were upon the earth. These evil spirits have been denied the privilege of obtaining mortal bodies; therefore, they sometimes seek to possess bodies of people living upon the earth. However, they are often detected by Elders holding the Priesthood and are cast out. On occasions they have attacked mortals and in every way tried to destroy the Kingdom of God on earth. The question of Satan's existence is interrelated with many L.D.S. doctrines. The Mormon concepts concerning opposition, the Fall, the Atonement, the divinity of Jesus Christ, and the inspiration of The Book of Mormon and other modern scripture, would of necessity be changed if Satan were to be denied as real person. The Latter-day Saints state that it is through their belief in modern revelation – scripture, the prophets, and personal revelation through the power of the Holy Ghost – that they know Satan exists, that they know many things concerning his origin and career, and that they are able in many cases to expose his deceptions.

▼ The renewal of interest in religious healing methods in the past few decades, in response to various perspectives of illnesses, is ‘blowing’ through the PCC-one of the reformed churches in Africa. There are two underlying assumptions in this project: the first is that sickness constitutes a major threat to good health and the second is that the ministry of healing in the PCC is not contextual in view of respecting and incorporating the cultural, social, religious beliefs and values of its people in the formation of meaningful healing ministry. The healing ministry of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon is lacking in efficacy and essence because it does not make much meaning in the lives of the sick and their relatives. This project gives an overview of some of the causes of tensions that exist in the PCC concerning its ministry of healing. It critically analysis, interprets and discusses the empirical results of 26 (20 laity and six clergy) members of the Musang congregation alongside some theological reflections. The project explored and highlighted the importance of the traditional worldview regarding health, illness, healing and defines healing as the work of God and that it is imperative for the Church to focus on a more meaningful healing ministry that includes physical, spiritual, social and psychological aspects, thus healing needs to be holistic. Putting together the results of the literature review, the empirical research and the critical and theological reflections, the project suggests and affirms that there are theological, practical and socio-cultural reasons for the PCC to rethink, reformulate and reshape its healing ministry in the light of Jesus’ healing ministry. The project points out the theological, practical and cultural basis for a more meaningful ministry of healing within the PCC. These results reveal that the PCC has no choice but to embrace this emerging biblical healing ministry if it truly wants to remain faithful and in obedience to Jesus’ three but inseparable ministries of preaching, teaching and healing. Finally, the project proposes an integrated healing service as one of the ways towards a more practical and meaningful ministry of healing in the PCC at home and in the diaspora. ▼ The sixteenth century was a period of intense questioning of religious authority in its many forms, including that of the Roman pope. Martin Luther first publicly denied the doctrine of papal ius divinum, or the teaching that the pope was Christ's divinely appointed successor, in his 1519 writing the Resolutio. Asserting that the papacy was a human institution, he argued from scripture, patristic sources, and historical evidence, the last time he would draw upon such as “consensus” of authorities before he would be pushed to deny the infallibility of the council at Leipzig. The Resolutio shows that Luther's denial of ius divinum was strongly motivated by pastoral factors, the belief that the pope had usurped the central place of Christ in the church, neglected his duty to communicate the Word to his flock, and established a tyranny over Christian souls. Though ius divinum did not have the status of officially defined dogma, Rome's defenders responded quickly and vehemently to Luther's challenge, a reaction that reveals the importance of the pope's divinely ordained status to Roman ecclesiology and sacramental doctrine. Thomist scholar and Luther's Catholic interrogator at Augsburg, Thomas de Vio Cajetan produced perhaps the ablest defense of ius divinum of his time, grounding his argument on the literal meaning of the key gospel passages under debate, Matthew 16:18-19 and John 21:15-17. Luther and Cajetan debated each other directly over the question of ius divinum ; this dissertation argues that another, slightly later voice participated in this discussion, after the lines separating Catholic from Protestant had been clearly drawn. The voice was that of Reginald Pole, noble Englishman who was exiled from his country to become Cardinal of the church, as well as a central figure among the spirituali, as the individuals in Italy who shared a devotion to reform based on individual reading of the Bible were known. Like the other spirituali (and like Luther for that matter), Pole believed reform was stimulated by contact with the Word, and thus had both an individual and an institutional component. This double aspect of reform is evident in Pole's work De summo Pontifice, which outlines a spiritual program for the pope to follow so that he may perform his role as Christ's Vicar. The understanding of the papacy as set forth in De summo Pontifice seeks to reconcile the fundamental beliefs of both sides of the debate over ius divinum, so that the pope is at once Christ's divinely appointed successor, but as such, his duty is essentially pastoral, to show Christ to his flock.

▼ The primary function of this study was to examine the language use of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church and the attitudes of the faithful towards the current language of the church. Three institutions of the church, TekleSawiros Sunday school, Minillik II memorial religious school and Mahibere Kidusan were selected. All the two hundred active participant of the Sunday school was selected. Eight key respondents and three research participants were purposely selected for interview. After the data was collected through questionnaires from the respondents of the Sunday school, quantitative analysis such as frequencies, and percentages were used to analyze the close ended parts of the questionnaire using SPSS 19 software. The open ended parts of the questionnaire and the in-depth interview made with respondents of MK and the traditional school was analyzed qualitatively. The findings of the study shows that the EOTC currently use Amharic and Geez most of the time for evangelization in all dioceses with exception of some unorganized individuals’ and association’s attempt of evangelizing in some selected languages. Liturgy is best performed when it is carried out in Amharic. This is because that the EOTC was first adopted in Geez and then translated in to Amharic the scriptures of liturgy are mostly available in Geez and Amharigna.in addition some dogmatic, sacramental doctrinal and traditional concepts cannot be expressed using other languages. Amharic is used as medium of instruction in Fidel (Alphabets) instruction and Geez and Amharic in other levels of the traditional education. The result of the analysis also revealed that there is no sacred document or scripture or tradition that prevents using various mother tongues for religious practices; rather all the scriptures of the church including the Holy Bible supports the use of different languages for spiritual ministry. Hence, it can be concluded that multilingualism is a natural phenomenon, as a gift of God and using it result effectiveness in evangelization. MK uses various MTs of the faithful like Amharigna, Oromigna, Tigrigna, Welayitigna, and Sidamigna to evangelize in print, electronic media and face to face media though it is insignificant as compared to the need of the faithful to be taught in their respective MTs. ▼ The researcher is a diocesan adviser for Children’s Ministry, charged with promoting the importance of children for the Church, and the study examines issues arising from this professional responsibility. Children’s advocates often suggest that adults have much to learn from them in the Church. It is commonly assumed that this learning will derive from their presumed characteristics such as ‘innocence’, or ‘playfulness’. However, these characteristics are not exclusive to or universal among children. The aim of this study is to investigate the ‘specialness’ of children and discover if there is something peculiar to childhood that would merit Jesus placing a child in the midst of his disciples as a signpost to the kingdom of heaven. The primary data source is the researcher’s journal of his experience as a member of a multi-generational church group, and the study employs a qualitative methodology drawing on Grounded Theory and some of the practices of autoethnography. The importance of a relationship between experience and theology for Practical Theology is noted and the influence of experience on theologians explored with reference to Schleiermacher, Miller-McLemore and the theological reflection of ‘ordinary’ Christians. The analysis of the researcher’s journal is developed as an example of experience-grounded personal theological reflection. The results achieved by the study show that the most powerful personal effects of the multi-generational group on the researcher did not reflect the children’s attributes per se but rather his own characteristics as revealed in relationship with the children. Interviews with the other adult members of the group, and Christian adults who work with children in contrasting situations, support the view that the effect of children on adults is influenced by the individuals concerned. The personal factors influencing the adults’ experience are thematised, and the questions these themes evoke are seen as indicating the theological potential of reflection on the adult/child interface. The study concludes that one aspect of the ‘specialness’ of children arises from their vulnerability and the nature of the relationship this creates with adults. The ‘special value’ of children to the life of the Church, it is suggested, includes the opportunity they give adults to view their own ‘being’ as God-given ‘gift’ by exploring how it can serve God’s purposes in promoting the flourishing of the vulnerable. The possibility of promoting such exploration among individual Christians and Church communities is considered. The findings of the study are seen as having implications for a less romanticised portrayal of children’s importance in the Church; for promoting better intergenerational relationships; for grounded theological conversation within and beyond the Church; for recruitment to Children’s Ministry; and for the researcher’s professional practice.

▼ The Church of England's traditional theology of marriage between one man and one woman is protected in the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 from reforms to civil law to include same-sex couples. Within the Church of England, same-sex couples who enter civil unions (of partnership or marriage) are not permitted to have a service in church to celebrate with prayer for God's blessing. Clergy in civil partnerships are not permitted by the Church of England to convert their union to civil marriage if they hold a bishop's licence to practice. This research questions the meaning of equal relationships, both marriage and same-sex unions, to test three of the benefits of marriage asserted by the Church to the UK Government: mutuality, fidelity, and the biological complementarity of the couple with the possibility of procreation (Church of England, 2012). A methodology of practical theology, where my practice-based research leads to theory that reforms practice, fosters dialogue among voices of theology within the context of the Church of England. A postliberal interdisciplinary approach recognises plural meanings within my research field and adopts narrative methods for data generation, analysis, interpretation and presentation. Theologies of equal marriage and union, interpreted from narratives co-constructed with my participants, are brought into conversation with premodern liturgies for blessings of unions of Christian harmony and peace, seeking a fusion of horizons expressed through performed ritual. This research argues that two of the Church's benefits of marriage, mutuality and fidelity, are embodied in all participants' marriages and civil partnerships, but challenges the Church's third benefit, because it is stated as derived from acknowledgement of an underlying biological complementarity of the couple. Changes in the legal and social contexts in England, academic research literature in the fields of gender and sexuality, and evidence from research participants' lived practices lead to reinterpretation of the third benefit as responsible choices for parenting and the nurture of children in a pro/creative relationship. Implications for the Church of England are that emerging theologies in this research mandate policy changes, to lift the Church's prohibition of services in church after same-sex civil unions and to pilot new liturgies of blessing. For mixed-sex couples to marry each other in a liturgy of Christian equal marriage, this research offers two areas for light revision of the Church's contemporary liturgy to provide alternative options: gender-neutral language and rubrics, and nuanced language expressing loving intimacy rather than specific emphasis on sexual union. These changes will enable the Church of England to renew Christian marriage based on a recovered and reinterpreted theology of Christian unions of harmony and peace, so that couples can celebrate in church with prayer for God's blessing either through marriage or a service after their civil union.

Allison This dissertation argues that in a day of ecclesiological confusion among evangelicals over who belongs to the church and what the mission of the church is, the biblical concept of the image of God interpreted in its textual, redemptive-historical, and canonical contexts reveals a common pattern for the people of God that serves as an interpretive key to understanding the identity, nature, and mission of the church. Chapter 1 recounts much of the confusion over the doctrine of the church within evangelicalism and exposes the need for such a proposal. Chapter 2 proposes that the creation of man as God’s image reveals God’s purpose to create (1) a people with whom he will relate in a father/son relationship (sonship) under his rule and care (covenant), (2) a people who will dwell in his presence to serve him as priests (priesthood) and (3) a people who will represent his sovereign rule on the earth (kingship) by exercising dominion over creation by extending the borders of the sacred space and reproducing the divine image through godly offspring until the entire earth is filled with the glory of God (mission). Thus, it establishes the foundation for the thesis that the concept of the image of God communicates sonship, kingship, and priesthood within a covenant relationship in which God’s people serve as God’s instruments by which he establishes his kingdom on the earth. Chapter 3 shows how the pattern for the people of God established in the garden continues in Abraham and Israel. It also shows that king David is a prototypical image bearer who points to a future messianic Adam who will ultimately establish God’s kingdom on the earth. While Israel failed to keep covenant and image God faithfully, judgment is not the final word. Instead, the biblical storyline looks forward to a new covenant yet to be established by a faithful Davidic messiah. Chapter 4, then, investigates the new covenant passages in Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel by utilizing Isaiah 54-56 as a structure for understanding what the new covenant entails. Chapter 5 addresses the New Testament data related to Jesus as the last Adam. The chapter shows that Jesus is the Son of God from David’s line who came to restore Israel on the basis of a new covenant. This messianic mission reveals that Jesus is the true and faithful image of God who inaugurates the kingdom of God on the earth and begins populating it with the divine image by gathering a people through the gospel. Chapter 6 shows that the pattern of the people of God established in Genesis 1 and 2 is also found in the church: sonship, kingship, priesthood, and mission within a covenant relationship. ▼ The pursuit of church indigeneity and unity was a two-fold theme throughout the history of twentieth-century Chinese Christianity. Modern scholarship has generated a good number of studies regarding church indigeneity, but has neglected the parallel trend towards interdenominational co-operation and church union in China. This thesis endeavours to remedy this deficiency. The thesis examines the process of the quest of Chinese Protestants for a united indigenous church, focusing on Cheng Jingyi (1881-1939), one of the key figures in the early twentieth-century ecumenical movement. Additionally, it pays particular attention to the Church of Christ in China as a case study. It discusses the feasibility of the ecumenical convictions which were shared by a considerable number of mainline Chinese Protestants, with Cheng Jingyi as a representative, and evaluates the legacy of the church unity movement in early twentieth-century China. The thesis argues that the church unity movement within the mainline Chinese churches differed from the ecumenical movement in the West, which aimed to realise fraternal co-operation and even union among various denominations. In China the aim was to establish a single national church on a federal pattern, reflecting a Chinese indigenous understanding of ecumenism and ecclesiology. It also reflected a broader vision of the Christian church than that exhibited by the majority of the independent Chinese Protestant groups or by the Chinese church under the control of the Three-Self Patriotic Movement during the 1950s. Based on the conviction of the universal nature of the church in which the Chinese church was an indispensable part, the church unity movement in China surpassed a narrowly nationalistic vision. Nonetheless, the good intentions of the Church of Christ in China were overshadowed by its dependence on foreign subsidies. The church never achieved ‘three-self’ status: it was self-governing and self-propagating, but never self supporting. As such its goal of indigeneity was never fully realised.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Reformed Church of East Africa (RCEA) was founded by the Dutch Reformed Church in 1944. The RCEA however deviates in its church governance from Reformed/Presbyterian church polity principles ordinarily embraced by Reformed churches across the globe. The church judicial development of the RCEA has been influenced on the one hand by the mission agencies for example the Dutch Reformed missionaries as well as the Reformed Mission League and on the other hand by the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA). The researcher assessed the Constitution of the RCEA in this dissertation against the Reformed/Presbyterian church polity principles (see Chapter 3 and 5). The research tries to determine to what extent the Constitution of the RCEA is grounded in reformed church polity principles, namely: a)Self-government under the sole headship of Christ, b)The limited autonomy of the local congregation, c)The denominational ties serve the well -being of the Church, d)The restricted power and responsibilities of ecclesial assemblies, e)The necessity and nature of Christian discipline, f)Right of appeal, g)The power of the major assemblies with regard to misconduct. Three phases of the church judicial developments of the RCEA can be discern, namely i.Dependency to “mother church” 1905-1963, ii.RCEA as semi-autonomous church 1963-1991, iii.RCEA move towards self-governance 1982-1992. The researcher proposes in the dissertation amendments based on Reformed/Presbyterian church polity principles, as well as provision being made of in reformed church orders from different contexts inter alia the Church Order of Dordt (1619), the church order of the Protestant Church in the Netherlands (PCN), the church order of the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa (URCSA) as well as the church order of the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) which the RCEA might take into account when the denomination embark on the drafting of a new church order. The researcher concluded at the end of the dissertation that the RCEA should make provisions in the envisaged church order regarding: The ordination of women, The authority and responsibilities of the ecclesial assemblies, The confessional basis of the RCEA, The necessity and nature of Christian discipline and the right to appeal.

AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Gedurende 1944 het die Nederduits Gereformeerde Kerk die Reformed Church of East Africa (RCEA) gestig. Kerkregtelik wyk die RCEA van die Gereformeerde / Presbiteriaanse kerkregbeginsels af wat gewoonlik met Gereformeerde kerke dwarsdeur die wêreld geassosieer word. ▼ The study examined the psychosocial correlates of psychological wellbeing among the clergy of the Presbyterian Church and the Church of Pentecost in Accra. A concurrent mixed-method approach composed of a quantitative and qualitative methods was used. The quantitative involved the use of questionnaires administered to three hundred and six (306) conveniently sampled clergy from some selected congregations among the GA and GA West Presbyteries of the Presbyterian church of Ghana in Accra and some selected churches within the eleven administrative Areas of the Church of Pentecost in Accra. The qualitative study involved an in depth interview with twenty-seven (27) participants that comprised of fourteen Presbyterian clergy and thirteen Church of Pentecost clergy all within Accra with age range between thirty to sixty-five years who have gained at least three years of experience in the ministry. The clergy were administered with the Psychological General Wellbeing Index Scale (PGWBI), Maslach Burnout Inventory Scale, Work Family Conflict Scale and Job Satisfaction Scale to test the psychosocial correlates that affects their psychological wellbeing. The results from the quantitative analysis indicate that no significant differences were seen in job satisfaction, work-family conflict, family-work conflict and burnout by gender. Exhaustion, work family conflict, family-work conflict, efficacy and job satisfaction excluding cynicism significantly predicted psychological wellbeing. There were significant differences between Presbyterian and Church of Pentecost clergies on job satisfaction, work-family conflict and exhaustion by church group. The results from the thematic analysis used to analyze the qualitative data indicates that the clergies from both churches experience certain psychosocial issues such as difficulty in performing family duties, privacy violations, transfer issues, financial commitment and difficulties, emotional drain, administrative and ministerial role conflict. Finally, all implications and recommendations were made with regards to the findings of the study and limitations were discussed
