▼ The purpose of this thesis is to extend existing knowledge in interfirm knowledge transfer research and provide a rich description of the dynamic knowledge transfer process in alliance arrangements. An exploratory case study methodology is employed, and one international joint venture (IJV) project is investigated. The empirical evidence was derived from the researcher’s involvement with one auto IJV – Shanghai GM, an IJV formed between Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) from P.R. China and General Motors (GM) from the United States. Data collection was conducted through primary and secondary sources including fieldwork interviews with Chinese and American executives respectively in the IJV, selected published sources as well as government officials, and consultants who were directly or indirectly involved with the case companies. Using CATPAC software as an analytical tool for textual analysis of the collected data, the following findings emerged. First, partner firms in Shanghai-GM reinforce the development of international cooperation as a means of increasing knowledge exchange and adaptation, such as enlarging the product ranges, and developing new car models. Second, partner firms are motivated to increase their knowledge transfer activities to increase competitive advantage levels to match or exceed those of other competitors. Both partner companies initially contributed differentiated sets of idiosyncratic and nonsubstitutable resources that are distinctively under the control of each partner. The Chinese side brings in locally embedded resources and country-specific knowledge. The foreign side contributes technology, managerial abilities, brand image, and financial resources. There is thus an asymmetrical relationship between the objectives of partners and the resources brought into the alliance: each partner firm tries to gain access to what the other puts into the joint venture. Third, relevant important preconditions and situational factors regarding knowledge transfer effectiveness in alliance context are also mentioned. Certain elements are identified as a critical barrier during the process. Fourth, IJV knowledge transfer actually occurred over a longitudinal period involving intensive interactions between the partners. Different types of knowledge were transferred over time starting with key technologies, management skills, followed by the tacit social and cultural knowledge. As time passed, both partner firms demonstrated effort and commitment in facilitating interfirm knowledge transfer practices. The IJV knowledge transfer performance finally influenced the nature of the interfirm partnership. This thesis provides a unique example which looks at the two-way learning processes for true knowledge creation and sharing in a cross-border collaborative organisation, demonstrating the performance of partner organisations in the process of IJV knowledge transfer. ▼ Abstract This report provides an overview of the Mexican automotive market. In particular, it analyzes the 11main OEMs active in Mexico and 40 of the largest Tier 1 & 2 suppliers. It also analyzes the context of the market, including the current environment and future trends. The report opens with a brief introduction followed by an explanation of the academic framework (CAGE) that the analysis is loosely based on. Next is an explanation of the methodology used to gather the report information. The methodology describes some of the challenges faced during the research phase, as well as the most useful sources of information. This section also outlines any underlying assumptions used for predictions and estimations. Following the methodology is an explanation of a data sample. The first data set is the Production & Contact Information, which provides a list of the parts produced at each of the companiesâ facilities and its contact information. The second data set is the OEM & Tier Combination, which maps the connections between the OEMs and their respective suppliers. The third data set outlines the automotive clusters, and the final set provides a table of industry investments. Unless otherwise stated, all of the information in this section is specific to the Mexican market. Next is a general overview of Mexicoâs economy, then a more in-depth discussion of its automotive sector. Some of the topics discussed are manufacturing costs, procurement market, and foreign trade. Following this is an analysis of the automotive manufacturing clusters in Mexico. Each cluster is identified by its geographical locations, the companies active in it, and the parts produced in it. The most important or significant cluster are also mentioned. After the clusters comes a section on financial investments. Each of the 11 OEMs is profiled with a list of any planned or recent financial investments in Mexico. The report concludes by highlighting three of the major current trends in the Mexican Automotive Parts industry. ▼ The influence of recycling on aluminium alloys and subsequent influence on the microstructure and corrosion performances have been investigated. The investigation was commenced by taking two block cast, recycled aluminium alloys (AA5050 and AA6011) and rolling them into 1mm gauge plate. In the case of AA6011, the plate was subjected to subsequent solution heat treatment and artificial aging steps, in order to attain certain temper specifications. To replicate the automotive paint bake industrial practice, a sample was subjected to a 2% tensile stretch followed by heat treatment for 30 minutes at 180˚C. Microstructural observations revealed Al-Fe-Mn-Si intermetallics to be the dominant secondary phase in both alloys. The size, distribution and composition of these were unaffected by artificial aging. Mg2Si was found in a coarse, localised form in both alloys also, albeit in much less amounts in AA5050. The presence of this phase was likely due to poor homogenisation during thermomechanical processing. HR-TEM of AA6011 revealed needle/rod shaped precipitates, aligning in the [001]Al lattice direction. This is consistent with β’’/β’ hardening precipitates consisting of magnesium and silicon. Circumstantial evidence was found for the copper-containing Q phase precipitate also. An additional, unidentified precipitate was observed, nucleating on the {111} habit plane of the aluminium matrix. The high iron content of AA6011 retarded the precipitation hardening response by capturing elements associated with hardening precipitates in the Al-Fe-Mn-Si intermetallics. Electrochemical corrosion experiments revealed the materials had a high susceptibility to localised corrosions, with the open circuit potential and breakdown potential possessing similar values. Atmospheric corrosion experiments showed that artificial aging had a large influence on the preferred corrosion mechanism. Non-heat treated samples showed susceptibility for pitting corrosion. This was particularly true for the –T4P temper, which showed large scale pitting. Heat treated samples saw an introduced susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. This was attributed to precipitation at grain boundaries, which would then form a microgalvanic couple with adjacent depleted zones. In the case of the –T8P temper, tensile stretching introduced defects into the sub-grain microstructure. This resulted in intergranular corrosion fronts of increased width, where grains with higher stored energy undergo preferential dissolution alongside the grain boundary attack. Overall, the detrimental effects of high iron content need to be overcome before AA5050 and AA6011 can be seriously considered for use in the automotive industry. ▼ This research explores the evolution of risk management practices, from traditional to enterprise risk management (ERM), in Iran's automotive industry. It also investigates the alignment of ERM and performance management, and their mutual impact. Academic and industry studies reveal that throughout recent decades there has been an increasing interest into ERM development and its alignment with performance management. However, despite the increase in ERM adoption over recent years, ERM is still in the early stages of implementation and requires further research and development. Moreover, a literature review revealed that the literature in respect of the alignment of ERM with performance management is limited and those existing are mostly of a visionary nature and lack practical implementation. Therefore, the gap identified through the literature review led to the development of a theoretical framework within this research, exploring the main organisational elements significant to the effective alignment of ERM and performance management and its implementation, which will provide practitioners and academics with practical guideline regarding such alignment. This research was completed through two empirical stages within the context of automotive industry. The primary data were collected and analysed through a mixed methods approach: 30 semi-structured interviewees were conducted with senior managers within the automotive industry (Qualitative). In the second stage, automotive industry professionals' responses were gathered from 101 survey questionnaires (Quantitative). The theoretical and empirical findings of this research confirm that in the recent decades, risk management has been evolving and transforming from its traditional approach to a strategic foundation, leading organisations towards competitive advantage and value creation. This research also indicates that aligning ERM with organisational performance management is critical in establishing a sustainable ERM and enhancing business performance over time. Based on the empirical findings of this research supported by theoretical findings, a lack of support from senior managers for effective ERM implementation and its alignment with performance management is considered as one of the significant challenges of sustainable ERM. In addition, a lack of ERM infrastructure and shareholders' poor understanding of ERM remains as challenging factors in aligning ERM with performance management. To the Researcher's best of knowledge, there is very limited literature into alignment of ERM and performance management in automotive industry. ▼ Corporate “social responsibility (CSR) is a corporation's initiatives to evaluate and take responsibility for the effects of companies on the social and environmental wellbeing. This can be in form of providing safety, taking care of the environment, providing housing, providing health care, and other concerns by both small and large companies (Blackburn 2007). The concept of CSR started in the developed nations of North America and Western Europe which was a response to the great amount of consumer and civil society pressures. In South Africa, companies create problems for their communities in one way or the other because of their business. It is difficult to tell whether automotive companies in South Africa are engaging in CSR or not as there is no study that has been conducted in this regard. Despite the expansion of the automotive industry very little is known about the terms of contract between the automotive industry and society have established to serve human values and accept responsibility transactions. This led to the decision to conduct this study to ascertain the CSR activities carried out by companies in the automotive industry in South Africa Pietermaritzburg. The target population for this study were managers and employees at an automotive company in Pietermaritzburg. Non-probability sampling purposive sampling was used to select a total of 8 participants; four managers and four employees. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were used to generate the data needed from participants to understand the research problem under study. Thematic analysis was used to analyse data. Findings show that the company is carrying out discretionary, economic, legal and ethical responsibilities. There is however need to promote consumer awareness, environmental sustainability, and corporate reputations that can help the company to widen its scope and mandate of its strategic focus. ▼ Group-level knowledge is the most valuable yet 'stickiest' element of a firm's capabilities. The effective transfer of group-level knowledge is the key to the success of capability acquisition. Despite its strategic importance, group-level knowledge and its transfer process are still largely under-explored. One of the critical causes for this lack of research is that the traditional knowledge transfer paradigm, assuming a unitary-level perspective on the knowledge transfer outcome and key determinant constructs, does not provide a resolution sharp enough to identify the factors that affect the transfer of group-level knowledge. In this study, I expand the knowledge transfer paradigm from a unitary-level structure into a two-level construction by making conceptual distinctions between the two ontological levels (i.e. individual- vs. group-level) of the key constructs of this paradigm, such as learning strategies, teaching strategies and absorptive capacity. By taking this multilevel perspective, I am able to zoom in on the group-level knowledge content within a firm's capabilities and gain insight into the ways in which group-level knowledge is transferred. Based on prior literatures and my own exploratory fieldwork, I posit that group-level learning is more effective than individual-level learning in transferring group-level knowledge; group-level teaching surpasses individual-level teaching in transferring individual-level knowledge; and group-level absorptive capacity is the only level of absorptive capacity that contributes to the acquisition of group-level knowledge. I empirically tested my hypotheses by surveying Chinese automotive firms on their efforts and outcomes when acquiring engineering capabilities from various sources. The findings have validated the conceptual distinctions between the two ontological levels of the key constructs and supported most of the hypotheses. The most striking implication of this study is that in the absence of conceptual distinctions between individual- and group-level knowledge transfer strategies and absorptive capacity, most firms have been overly relying on individual-level teaching and learning strategies and individual-level absorptive capacity, which unfortunately are not the most effective methods for transferring group-level knowledge. It is hoped that the theoretical establishment and empirical findings of this study will encourage firms to choose knowledge transfer approaches and build absorptive capacity in a more effective way. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Auswirkung des Transfers von einem lateinischen Schriftsystem in ein chinesisches Schriftsystem hinsichtlich der zielkulturellen Gestaltung der Werbebotschaft. Hierbei soll die Übersetzung der Typografie von Werbeanzeigen in ihrer Komplexität untersucht werden. Für das funktionale Übersetzen von Werbebotschaften wird eine Begriffsbestimmung von Translation vorgenommen. Als übersetzungstheoretische Grundlagen werden die Skopostheorie nach Reiß und Vermeer, die Theorie des Translatorischen Handelns von Holz-Mänttäri und die Theorie der multimodalen Kommunikation von Gunther Kress und Theo van Leeuwen herangezogen. Darauf aufbauend werden Übersetzungsstrategien in der Werbeübersetzung vorgestellt und das „TT+T-Modell“ von Jürgen Schopp beschrieben. Speziell wird in weiterer Folge auf die Werbeübersetzung in China eingegangen und die Übersetzung von Typografie im chinesischen Zielmarkt miteingebunden. Der Gebrauch von zwei unterschiedlichen Schriftsystemen stellt besondere Anforderungen an die typografische Gestaltung der zielsprachlichen Werbung. Am Beispiel von vergleichbaren deutschen und chinesischen Werbeanzeigen der Automobilmarken Audi, BMW, Porsche und VW werden die Werbeanzeigen als semiotisches Produkt vom typografischen Standpunkt aus untersucht. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es herauszufinden, wie die einzelnen Komponenten der Werbeanzeigen – in ihrer Gestaltung und Beziehung zueinander – die ZielrezipientInnen emotionalisieren. Im Analysekapitel wird in der Gegenüberstellung der deutschen und chinesischen Werbeanzeigen diskutiert, welche Dynamik die Bildhaftigkeit im Chinesischen in Kombination mit der Farb- und Zahlensymbolik, der Schriftart und dem Schriftgrad innerhalb der Werbebotschaft entfaltet. Unter dem multimodalen Aspekt wird die Wechselwirkung zwi-schen den einzelnen Komponenten aufgezeigt und das Translat als funktionales Ganzes beurteilt. Die Analysekriterien orientieren sich an einem typografischen Instrumentarium.

This Master’s thesis deals with the impact of the transfer from a Latin writing system to a Chinese writing system with regard to the target cultural design of the advertising message. The complexity of the translation of the typography of advertisements will be investigated. A definition of translation is defined for the functional translation of advertising messages. The basic principles of translation theory form the basis for this paper. These are the Scopos Theory according to Reiß and Vermeer, the Theory of Translational Action by Holz-Mänttäri and the Theory of Multimodality by Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen. Syftet med denna studie har varit att undersöka de multinationella företagens ”tvingande joint venture-avtal” med de kinesiska tillverkarna, och hur det påverkar teknologisk överföring. Som metod för att samla in information valde uppsatsförfattaren att genomföra kvalitativa intervjuer, vilka var semi-strukturerade. Genom ett icke-sannolikhetsurval valdes tre företag ut för att delta i studien. Studiens slutsatser tyder på förutsatt att den kinesiska regeringens krav på joint venture-avtal reviderades eller helt slopades och de multinationella fordonstillverkarna därmed fick valfri möjlighet till FDI, då skulle det leda till att färre företag ingår joint ventures med kinesiska tillverkare. Dessutom ökar incitamenten för de multinationella företagen att överföra teknologier till den kinesiska fordonsindustrin om de har möjligheten att fritt bestämma FDI, däremot är det ingen garanti för mer effektiva teknologier. Företagen överför endast teknologier och produkter som den kinesiska marknaden efterfrågar och är beredd att betala för. Multinationella företag kan inte implementera de mest avancerade teknologierna i fordon ämnade för den kinesiska marknaden på grund av bristande kvalitet på färdbränsle. Enligt de multinationella företagen krävs det därför hårdare och mer strikta regleringar från den kinesiska regeringens sida när det gäller kvaliteten på bränsle. Denna studie har bidragit med kunskap om hur joint venture-avtalen inom just den kinesiska fordonsindustrin påverkar den teknologiska överföringen utifrån de multinationella företagens perspektiv. Framförallt belyser studien betydelsen av relationskvalitet, tillit och absorptionsförmåga i samband med teknologisk överföring. Förutsatt att kraven på joint venture antingen revideras eller helt slopas i framtiden skulle det vara intressant att genomföra en liknande studie och således jämföra omfattningen på teknologisk överföring innan och efter de eventuella lagändringarna. Det vill säga hur effekterna av valfri FDI för multinationella företag i själva verket påverkar teknologisk överföring. Ytterligare förslag på framtida forskning är att genomföra en liknande studie men utifrån ett mer djupgående samhällsperspektiv.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the multinational corporations “mandatory joint venture agreement" with the Chinese manufacturers, and how it affects technology transfer. The researcher chose to conduct qualitative interviews which were semi-structured, as a method to collect information. Through a non-probability sample, three companies were selected to participate in the study. The study's findings suggest that if the Chinese government's demands on the joint venture agreement was revised or completely abolished, and the multinational vehicle manufacturers got free choice of FDI, then it will lead to fewer companies which will establish joint ventures with Chinese manufacturers. It would also increase the incentives for multinationals to transfer technologies to the Chinese automotive industry.…

i newlineAbstract Total Quality Management (TQM) has become a frequently used term in discussions concerning quality. The international and national competitive environment is in a process of constant change by the globalization of markets and the increased interdependence of economic agents. This process of change has brought increased demands on the organizations competitiveness and customers have gained a central role in the organizations focus. TQM is considered to be an important management philosophy, which supports the organizations in their effort to obtain satisfied customers. However, there exist extensive numbers of examples of failed or badly performed implementation process of TQM. This is a problematic phenomenon, which negatively affects organizations in their development towards business excellence and ultimately survival in a competitive environment. Furthermore, diversity among researchers exists regarding the actual benefits of TQM. The issues regarding the critical success and barrier factors of TQM implementation, when considering the incentives for the large organizational change a TQM implementation implies, is important. The developments related to Indian companies, concerning quality of products and services, need to be examined on a comparative global scale. It is, therefore, imperative for the Indian automobile sector to understand and analyze the complex interactions and the dynamics of factors affecting TQM, and factors which are the outcome of TQM over a longer time horizon. This will allow India to evolve a development plan through the integration of all the identified dominant factors interacting or being acted on. The present research focused on assessing TQM implementation initiatives in selected Indian automotive industries to explain and identify similarities and differences in the implementation approach, benefits achieved, critical success and barrier factors of TQM implementation.

▼ Initial and subsequent market entry mode choices of multinational enterprises (MNEs) depend on MNE managers’ perceptions of the potential to capture additional competitiveness by internalizing their unique firm-specific advantages (FSAs), also called ownership (O)-specific advantages, together with the host countries’ country-specific advantages (CSAs) also called location (L)-specific advantages (Dunning 1988; Hennart 2009; Rugman et al. 2012). During the last decade we observe a significant shift of automotive production in Europe from the West to the East, and Turkey has been one of the major beneficiaries of this change. In this paper we analyze the roots of Turkey’s evolving CSAs and try to understand their differing impacts on market entry strategies of MNEs in the automotive industry with the help of the diamond model (Porter 1990). We apply a longitudinal approach in our empirical study and focus on developments in the period between the years 2000 and 2010. We find out that Turkey’s national diamond has improved over the decade led by improving political leadership and stability, as well as institutional reforms and consequent economic stability following the banking crisis in 2001. We also find out that the country’s diamond has strengthened by the implementation of the customs union in 1996 and the beginning of membership negotiations with the European Union (EU) in 2005. Despite the fact that these developments have led to a fast growth of the automotive industry in Turkey, we notice that MNEs have responded differently in their market entry strategies, and these differences rely on the match of their strategic positions and market entry motives with CSAs. Based on our observations we make clear propositions that link market entry choices to generic strategies and market entry motives. ▼ The influence of recycling on aluminium alloys and subsequent influence on the microstructure and corrosion performances have been investigated. The investigation was commenced by taking two block cast, recycled aluminium alloys (AA5050 and AA6011) and rolling them into 1mm gauge plate. In the case of AA6011, the plate was subjected to subsequent solution heat treatment and artificial aging steps, in order to attain certain temper specifications. To replicate the automotive paint bake industrial practice, a sample was subjected to a 2% tensile stretch followed by heat treatment for 30 minutes at 180˚C. Microstructural observations revealed Al-Fe-Mn-Si intermetallics to be the dominant secondary phase in both alloys. The size, distribution and composition of these were unaffected by artificial aging. Mg2Si was found in a coarse, localised form in both alloys also, albeit in much less amounts in AA5050. The presence of this phase was likely due to poor homogenisation during thermomechanical processing. HR-TEM of AA6011 revealed needle/rod shaped precipitates, aligning in the [001]Al lattice direction. This is consistent with β''/β' hardening precipitates consisting of magnesium and silicon. Circumstantial evidence was found for the copper-containing Q phase precipitate also. An additional, unidentified precipitate was observed, nucleating on the {111} habit plane of the aluminium matrix. The high iron content of AA6011 retarded the precipitation hardening response by capturing elements associated with hardening precipitates in the Al-Fe-Mn-Si intermetallics. Electrochemical corrosion experiments revealed the materials had a high susceptibility to localised corrosions, with the open circuit potential and breakdown potential possessing similar values. Atmospheric corrosion experiments showed that artificial aging had a large influence on the preferred corrosion mechanism. Non-heat treated samples showed susceptibility for pitting corrosion. This was particularly true for the -T4P temper, which showed large scale pitting. Heat treated samples saw an introduced susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. This was attributed to precipitation at grain boundaries, which would then form a microgalvanic couple with adjacent depleted zones. In the case of the -T8P temper, tensile stretching introduced defects into the sub-grain microstructure. This resulted in intergranular corrosion fronts of increased width, where grains with higher stored energy undergo preferential dissolution alongside the grain boundary attack. Overall, the detrimental effects of high iron content need to be overcome before AA5050 and AA6011 can be seriously considered for use in the automotive industry. However, the corrosion performance of AA6011-T8P is encouraging.

There have been many events that have presented the business with extraordinary challenges (Krüger, 2019), but the current challenges BMW face are different. Following an extensive period of prosperous development and flourishing commercial success, the business is fundamentally redefining BMW (Zetsche, 2019). Simultaneously, many changes are occurring from substantial application of new technologies to innovative competitors, investments for electrification of the cars, sustainability policies, and changing consumer preferences are forcing BMW to reconsider their business models and leadership approaches (Cornet et al., 2019; Donkin, Binvel, & Stemmler, 2016; Krüger, 2019; Mohr et al., 2013; Telang, 2018; Zetsche, 2019). It is essential to understand required adjustments to the traditional approach to leadership at BMW, which has its origin in a more command-and-control mentality. Now the role of senior executives has become a substantial critical success factor in the organisational transformation (Greer & Carter, 2013 Becker, 2019; Cornet et al., 2019). The apparent research question raised is how do BMW senior executives experience this unprecedented and challenging situation and choose to perform their role accordingly. This study examines strategic leadership by illuminating relevant contextual relationships which influence leaders' actions within a specific context. The research offers a novel approach to studying leadership practice by employing a single case study drawing upon the philosophy of pragmatism. The attention is towards the description of the complexity and contextuality rather than decreasing or disconnecting it. By conducting eighteen interviews with BMW senior executives and nine interviews with external consultants the study captures multiple voices and perspectives. The examination provides a comprehensive and detailed description of the occurring problem and accordingly what practical solution can be applied. In this regard the recognition and conceptualisation of context and its dependencies have not been an essential part of most leadership research (Fairhurst, 2009; Iszatt-White, 2011; Johns, 2001, 2006; Oc, 2018; Porter & McLaughlin, 2006). Nevertheless, the focus on leadership in a specific context provides an advantageous insight into the leadership practice—because leadership and its effectiveness are in large part dependent upon the context (Osborn, Hunt & Jauch, 2002; Moir, 2018; Poser, 2017; Wang, 2018). The study shows how senior executives perceive the specific dynamic context within the changing automotive industry. The conclusion of the examination is that the senior executives consider the current business changes and employ a combination of ambidexterity and meaningful action towards an envisioned outcome. ▼ In the 2000s, Chinese film industry, the most important propaganda apparatus of the Chinese Communist Party, was transformed into a commercial culture industry and became the second largest film market in the world. This project is a formal, cultural and industrial analysis of the transformation of the Chinese film industry and the corresponding changes in production culture due to a new wave of movie industry reforms starting in the late 1990s. By placing Chinese cinema in the world scene within globalization, this dissertation addresses the following research questions: How did the Chinese state undertake movie industry reforms and accelerate them in the 2000s? How did industrial transformation and commercialization influence filmmaking practices in terms of mode of production, genre, and narrative? To what extent were Chinese practitioners impacted by these state-directed reforms and shaped by market forces? To what extent did Hollywood’s commercial films influence Chinese cinema? With an integrated framework combining political economy, cultural studies, media industry studies, and film studies, Commercial Revitalization of Chinese Cinema considers China’s movie industry reform and industry transformation as culture phenomena. Three case studies of the industrial transformations in this project reveal China’s unique approaches to reviving its national film industry and building film as a type of soft power. It also illustrates an interesting media reform model substantially different from that of Hollywood and other national cinemas. I argue that China’s political economy and its special political, social and cultural histories are determinant in enabling the movie industry reform to develop a hybrid culture industry model that combines China’s experience in SOEs (State-Owned Enterprises) reform and Hollywood’s commercial film business model. As a result of industry transformation and structural changes, the emerging Chinese blockbuster production became a dominant mode of production, which localized and transformed generic and aesthetic conventions found in other film cultures as a dynamic interaction between global and local cultural exchanges. ▼ In 2017, the Chinese film box office surpassed $86 billion, making it the second largest film market just behind the United States. However, a series of data show that the international competitiveness of the Chinese film industry is still very low, which has limited its potential to influence Chinese culture more broadly. This dilemma could be accounted for by both economic and cultural reasons. The special cultural properties of the films provide a new perspective, the cultural discount, for the research of international competitiveness of the film industry. Although the influence of the overseas audience’s reception of the film by the cultural discount has been confirmed, how the cultural discount affects the international competitiveness of the film industry, or what roles the cultural factor plays in the film industry, provide more diversified perspectives for this study to research on this topic. This research mainly focuses on the relationship between the cultural discount and the international competitiveness of the film story. Based on Story approach, concepts of narratology, cultural geography, cultural distance, and linguistic affinity are applied to analyze how is culture encoded in the film story to produce the cultural discount. In different story elements such as structure, setting, characters, genres and meaning, the reasons that may cause cultural discounts in the process of film production are found and analyzed respectively. The function mode of the cultural discount in the cross-cultural communication between films and the foreign audiences is also concluded by utilizing Encoding/decoding theory. Three American films have been taken as a case study to explore their methods of reducing the cultural discount from the angle of narrative transparency. Using clear narrative structure to promote the audience's understanding of the film plot, applying the prototype story and universal life experience to shape the film characters, and exploring the common feelings in different cultures to convey the meaning and guide the audience to correctly accept, are the successful approaches to reduce cultural discount in cross-cultural communication. In combination with the current situation of Chinese films, the internationalization of Chinese stories is discussed as a practical application of the research conclusion Advisors/Committee Members: Straubhaar, Joseph D. Istorija i filozofija prirodnih nauka i tehnologije / History and philosophy natural science and technology

Ovaj rad je posvećen istraživanju jugoslovenskog iskustva u izgradnji automobilske industrije zasnovane na zapadnoj tehnologiji u periodu između 1954. i 2008. godine. Najveći deo rada obuhvata istraživanje organizacionog i tehnološkog razvoja Fabrike automobila „Crvena zastava” (skraćeno Zastava), jer se početak stvaranja jugoslovenske automobilske industrije vezuje za 1954. godinu kada je Zastava potpisala sa FIAT-om Ugovor o ustupanju licence. To je ujedno bio prvi Ugovor potpisan između jedne zapadne kompanije sa jednim preduzećem iz istočnoevropske socijalističke zemlje nakon Drugog svetskog rata. Zastava je od svog osnivanja izgrađivala mrežu domaćih kooperanata. U pretežno agrarnom društvu (od 1950-ih i ranih 1960-ih), većina njenih kooperanata nije raspolagala sa znanjima o industrijskoj proizvodnji niti znanjima o tehnologiji koja bi zadovoljila zahteve za proizvođače delova za automobile. Zato je bila prinuđena da se najviše oslanja na uvozne delove. Prvi kooperanti Zastave su osnovani u okolini Kragujevca, a kasnije se kooperantska mreža proširila na celu Jugoslaviju. Zastava je bila nosilac izgradnje fabričkih pogona u nerazvijenim regionima, kao što su Makedonija i Kosovo, u koje je ulagala sopstvena sredstva uz dodatnu finansijsku pomoć fonda za razvoj. Snabdevanje Zastave neophodnim komponentama bilo je praćeno problemima, kao što su zastoji i uska grla u lancu snabdevanja. Rešenje za navedene probleme traženo je u uspostavljanju vertikalne integracije i umrežavanja u cilju stvaranja jedinstvene jugoslovenske automobilske industrije. Nakon ekonomskih reformi 1960-ih, jugoslovenska privreda se postepeno otvarala prema međunarodnom tržištu. U periodu do 1974, Zastava je potpisala više važnih ugovora o poslovno tehničkoj saradnji sa FIAT-om, što je rezultovalo proizvodnjom prvog nacionalnog automobila „Zastava 101”. Pored toga, Zastava je bila je posrednik u proširenju FIAT-a na istočnoevropsko tržište, a imala je i značajnu ulogu u razvoju saradnje između FIAT-a i proizvođača automobila iz Sovjetskog Saveza i Poljske. Uloga posrednika omogućila je jugoslovenskoj automobilskoj industriji da poveća izvoz na međunarodna tržišta. To je bio period kada je proizvodnja automobila u Kragujevcu dostigla svoj vrhunac - nivo srednje razvijenog preduzeća po evropskim merilima. Njeni automobili su se izvozili širom sveta, od tržišta „trećeg sveta”, EEZ i Istočne Evrope. Razvoj i osavremenjavanje proizvodnje u Zastavi postao je model za ukupan razvoj industrije, modernizaciju i ekonomski razvoj Jugoslavije. Zastava je bila sposobna da u potpunosti zadovolji zahteve domaćeg tržišta za automobilima, i da obezbedi izvoz automobila na različita međunarodna tržišta. U relativno kratkom vremenskom periodu, Jugoslavija kao zemlja sa najnižim stepenom motorizacije u Evropi uspela je da postane jedna od vodećih zemalja zahvaljujući pre svega domaćoj proizvodnji automobila, što je bio redak slučaj u zemljama…

This thesis is concerned with the development of a novel technical solution that is aimed to improve the quality of cable crimp terminations in the electronics industry. The automotive, aero and military vehicle industries are of special interest due to their stringent requirements for guaranteed quality assurances in relation to their safety-critical products. The emphasis is on handheld crimping tools, where a new scheme for measuring the relevant crimp force is proposed using a small embedded computer to process information; so as to make an on-instrument statement regarding the crimp process quality. The thesis includes a detailed review of the current technical practices in the cable termination business, with a particular emphasis on the quality estimations for crimped connections using the crimp force monitoring (CFM) scheme. A comprehensive study of the state-of-the-art crimp force monitoring schemes and technologies is presented. A gap in the tool chain is identified whereby the industry has a preference for the use of hand tools in some selected processes; but the CFM scheme cannot be currently integrated directly with such hand tools. The bulk of the work in this thesis is thus focused on the development of a technical solution that will address this need for integration of hand tools with the CFM scheme. The concept is to develop a fully embedded subsystem that can be attached directly to a hand tool and this system will perform all of the signal processing and the statistical analysis so that each crimped joint can be trusted to meet the relevant stated quality parameters. In the course of development work a fully functional prototype subsystem is developed for the CFM solution, for application to hand tools. Analytical and statistical measurement and assessment algorithms were developed to a standard, which allows a final quality rating to be applied to crimped joint connections. Such algorithms are designed to be embedded directly onto the instrument’s microcomputer. The new system has been evaluated and tested in the course of this research project and it has currently been accepted by a number of industries for a planned volume qualification assessment.
