▼ This study focuses on a series of fugitive operations (or what I am calling “activities”) that Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968) incited in order to test, theorize, position, and even make his work as such· Not conventionally “artistic” in nature, even if intimately connected to the collection, presentation, reception, and valuation of art, these activities include Duchamp's role as administrator, archivist, art advisor, curator, publicist, reproduction-maker, and salesman of his own oeuvre· Rather than merely procedural, auxiliary, or incidental, they might be thought of as constitutive, resulting in a still understudied but profoundly influential output by an artist who redefined so much of what, hence forth, would be called art· Here, those most iconic of Duchamp’s inventions, the readymades, although not the central objects of this study, are understood as significant insofar as they were not simply “nominated” to become artworks, but more importantly, because they were <italics>curated</italics>· It is precisely through curatorial operations—relative to much of Duchamp's production, and constituting one of the central activities that this dissertation explores—that the artist rendered the discourse, institutions, marketing, and presentational strategies of art into something like his cardinal “medium·”
Tracing Duchamp’s perennial relationship to photography, reproduction, the museum, and the archive, and spanning the period between 1913 and 1969, three chapters closely examine a number of undeniably material things: chapter one considers the artist's boxes of photographically replicated notes, the <italics>Box of 1914 </italics> (1913-14) and <italics>Boite verte </italics> (1934); chapter two examines documentation of ephemeral exhibitions, recording Duchamp’s curatorial interventions as well as suitcases filled with miniature reproductions, the Boite-en-
valise (1938–42); and chapter three is dedicated to a permanent installation, <italics>Etant donnés 1· la chute d’eau, 2· le gaz d’éclairage</italics> (1946–66)· However, the premise of this dissertation is that all of these gain a new significance if studied in relation to the elusive activities that actually constituted them as artworks· Together, they formed a counter-conception of the role of the artist, articulating—and complicating—the conceptual stakes of much of what is known of his practice and thickening into what Walter Benjamin called the artist's “theory of the work of art·”

Bahia no Ibirapuera (1959), o presente trabalho investiga o

Bardi are an important part of her professional trajectory. Taking
Bahia no Ibirapuera (1959) as a start point, this present work
analyzes the art exhibition path traced by her until Entreato para
crianças (1985). Based on the analysis of texts, drawings,
photographs, reports and the historical-social context, this
dissertation investigates how the subjects, approaches and the
spatial conceptions were transformed during this trajectory. Three
axes were found. The first one is focused on the insertion of the
regional art in the exhibition space, and on the indistinction
between popular and erudite; the second one is based on the bond
between art and work; the third one is expressed by the ludic
experimentation in the exhibition space. The role practiced by Lina
Bo Bardi transcended the expographic project, because besides being
completely involved in most of these exhibitions, she also used the
exhibition space as a place for cultural, social and political
discussions.

In this thesis, we are concerned with the qualitative study of solutions of Hamiltonian partial differential equations by the way of the invariant measures theory. Indeed, existence of such a measure provides some informations concerning the…

▼ The research over-viewed in this dissertation concerns very accurate variational calculations of the molecular systems with more than two electrons under the assumption of the Born-Oppenheimer (
BO) approximation. The centerpiece of this research is the use of explicitly correlated Gaussian (ECG) basis functions with floating centers to generate the potential energy curve (PEC) and potential energy surface (PES) of the considered molecular systems. One challenge of such calculations is the occurrence of the linear dependency between basis functions in the process of basis set optimization. The
BO PECs generated with ECG basis sets were limited to two-electron molecular systems for a few decades prior to the implementation of the author's approaches to this issue. These approaches include methods for a partial remedy to linear dependence, better guessing of initial basis functions, permanently removing the restriction of memory usage in parallel computer systems, and efficiently paralleling the calculations. The approach effectively utilizing the super computer systems yields benefits not only to the ECG calculations but could also be useful in the fields that require the significant amount of the computational resources. These procedures were implemented in computer codes that were run quite extensively on several parallel computer systems during the period of the author's Ph.D study. The calculated adiabatic PECs and the rovibrational energy levels are proven to be the most accurate ones to date. The dissertation is primarily based on the content of the papers that were published in co-authorship with my scientific advisor and other collaborators in several scientific journals. It also includes some details that were not considered in the publications but are essential for the completeness and good understanding of the presented work. In order to provide readers an insight into the development of the ECG based
BO molecular calculation, the published results of many calculations are classified and presented in a comprehensive way.

▼ Despite South America’s rich fossil mammal record,
relatively little work has focused on middle-latitude faunas of
Miocene age; most current understanding of South American mammals
during the middle Miocene derives from the extremes of the
continent. Quebrada Honda (Laventan SALMA) in southern Bolivia is
intermediate in latitude between these two regions, partly filling
this large geographic gap. New collections from Quebrada Honda in
2007 facilitated this analysis of its rodents. The most abundant of
these rodents are Prolagostomus and caviids. The octodontid
Chasichimys from Quebrada Honda represent the earliest and
northernmost occurrences of the genus. A new genus and species of
adelphomyine echimyid is also present, represented by a single
specimen with trilophodont, plate-like teeth. The abundance and
diversity of rodents with high-crowned teeth suggests that Quebrada
Honda was an open, grassland environment with fewer
forests.

▼ As semiconductor device sizes continue to decrease, the traditional bulk CMOS technology is seen as an obstacle itself by the physical device limitations. One of the physical limitations of MOSFETs is to ensure that the SCEs and related issues can be controlled to maintain device performance targets. For SOI MOSFETs, due to the presence of BOX, short-channel behavior is improved, as compared to bulk Si. But self-heating plays a key role in affecting device reliability. Thus, these challenges make the future of planar technology being difficult to be continuously implemented.
In this thesis we introduce the concept of the isolation-last process which moves the âFET active region definitionâ to the back of the S/D activation process. There are two kinds of devices to be fabricated: BOSDT-APSB MOSFET and ZBOSDT-APSB MOSFET. BOSDT is the acronym of block-oxide S/D-tie and APSB is the acronym of additional poly-Si body. It should be noted that the ZBO is the acronym of zero
BO (absence of
BO). Actually, the two above-mentioned devices can be referred to as the poly-Si TFTs, due to the presence of poly-Si active region. However, for the ultimate scaling, the two proposed devices can have an additional silicon body or ASB. Two proposed devices, being a consideration of fabrication aspects, have a different design compared to their scaled-down sizes. But we can still hold the ASBâs core values.
According to the simulation, the ASB shows its ability to alleviate the SCEs and offers improved cooling capability, which is because the additional body provides extra space for heat dissipation. The unwanted results are that the large gate leakage current and parasitic capacitances are observed as the ASB is created. Fortunately, these results are still within acceptable limits. Experimental results show that the APSB is desirable to suppress the SCEs in both BOSDT and ZBOSDT MOSFETs. We also verify that the deviceâs cooling capability can be improved by introducing an APSB into MOSFETs. In other words, the APSB is useful for enhanced performance and reliability, although some disadvantages exist also. The
BO has been proven to have a better channel controllability than its counterpart. But the ZBO can be seen as the ultimately scaled
BO. And after scaling, the schemes of ZBO and ASB become more pronounced.

This paper deals with the process of critical review in the production of modern brazilian architecture, post-Brasilia, starting the construction of the Igreja Espírito Santo do Cerrado (Uberlândia, 1976-1982) as a case of relevance to the establishment of a national scene by reformulations about discipline. In the development of the research, the predetermined time limit was constantly sustained by historical precedents relevant to the understanding of brazilian underdevelopment. The author´s research about this project, Lina Bo Bardi, of a consistent production to national identity, achieved so far in São Paulo and in the Northeast, are also regarded as fundamental process for its operations in the Triângulo Mineiro. The intrinsic values to the object, social, cultural, technical, esthetics and popular, associated with the production architect of renown, enable a critical analysis of the work. Still, let historiographical developments and debates on the inflections occurred between the modern movement and contemporary architecture. The proposed analysis was constructed by a reading of the design process, construction and reception of this architectural complex and ended up in the discussion about the heritage status of the work and its consequent interventions.

▼ This research project examines the acculturation process in order to predict the perceived work success and health (psychological and physical) of mineworkers in a mine in the North–West Province.1 Work success can also be described as that which is achieved when an employee enjoys his career for reasons of psychological experience of success and personal growth and development within both his/her current occupation and working environment. Health is defined as a condition of complete physical, mental and social well–being and not merely the absence of disease or frailty. Health is therefore about completeness, contentment and well–being at a physical, cultural, psychosocial, economic and spiritual level. Employees’ success and health is evaluated from an acculturation perspective, and therefore considered a result of the acculturation process. This proposition was explored by investigating the relationship between the acculturation context and individual intervening factors, mapped into variables, and acculturation outcomes (work success and health).
A convenient sample of participants from the mine examined was taken (n = 288). English questionnaires using a cross–sectional survey design were used to gather the data. Modified measuring instruments and others developed for the project, which follow a five–point Likert format (‘strongly agree’ to ‘strongly disagree’) were used to investigate the mainstream domain (perceived mainstream segregation demands, perceived pressure to conform to management ideologies and practices, perceived racism at work, perceived discrimination at work, and relationships with mainstream members at work), an individual intervening factor (individual separation acculturation strategy practices), the ethnocultural domain (perceived pressure to conform to own culture, ethnic separation demands at work, and relationships with co–ethnics at work), psychological acculturation outcomes (health), and sociocultural acculturation outcomes (work success).
The data was captured in a spreadsheet, controlled for errors, and statistically analysed using regression in SPSS. Descriptive statistics, Cronbach alpha coefficients, and Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients were inspected, and effect sizes were used to determine the findings’ practical significance.
The results did indicate practical and statistically significant relationships exist between acculturation context, individual and acculturation outcomes variables. Perceived pressure to conform to management ideologies and practices, perceived racism at work, perceived discrimination at work, and relationships with co–ethnics at work proved to be statistically significant predictors of meeting deadlines at work. Perceived pressure to conform to management ideologies and practices, perceived racism at work, perceived discrimination at work, and relationships with co–ethnics at work was statistically significant predictors of reputation and respect at work. ▼ The objective of this study was, firstly, to investigate the reliability of a measure of qualitative and
quantitative job insecurity and, secondly, to determine the relationship between qualitative and
quantitative job insecurity, job satisfaction, affective organisational commitment, turnover intention and
locus of control. A cross–sectional survey design was used which included participants randomly selected
from a retail banking group across junior, supervisory and middle management levels (n=178). The job
insecurity scales of Hellgren, Sverke and Isaksson (1999); job satisfaction scale of Hellgren, Sjöberg and
Sverke (1997); affective organisational commitment scale of Allen and Meyer (1990); turnover intention
scale of Sjöberg and Sverke (2001) and the locus of control scale of Levenson (1981) were administered.
Descriptive statistics were used in order to analyse the data. Structural equivalence was used for the
comparison of the factor structures of the job insecurity scale for the three language groups. Furthermore,
in order to determine the relationships between the variables, the Pearson product–moment correlation
coefficients were used, while the dependent variable turnover intention was predicted by means of a
regression analysis.
As indicated at the outset, two research articles form the basis of this mini–dissertation:
Based on the first article, results indicate that both the qualitative and quantitative scale presented
satisfactory levels of reliability across different language groups, and a relationship between these
dimensions (quantitative and qualitative) was noticeable. However, the item “I think my future prospects
and opportunities within the organisation are good” included in the qualitative job insecurity scale could
well be problematic, the deduction being that language barriers probably played a role in participants’
interpretation of the question.
According to the second article, both qualitative and quantitative job insecurity positively related to
turnover intentions. Furthermore, job satisfaction reported a negative relationship with turnover intention,
and a negative relationship between qualitative job insecurity and job satisfaction came to the fore. Locus
of control, on the other hand, had a direct bearing on qualitative job insecurity, while only job satisfaction and quantitative job insecurity directly predicted employees’ turnover intention in the banking sector.
Finally, locus of control seemingly had no mediating effect when predicting turnover intention.
Based on the afore–going, this mini–dissertation will conclude by offering deductions and making
recommendations for further research as well as offering possible solutions to the commercial banking
sector as far as the retention of staff is concerned.

▼ Collecting for New Zealand explores two interconnected questions: how do history curators at the Museum of New Zealand
Te Papa Tongarewa decide what to collect; and what do those curators and members of the public think
Te Papa should collect.
Te Papa’s status as a national museum is important to the context within which decisions are made and opinions formed about collecting. By detailing the actual acquisition process and including the views of museum users, this research makes an important contribution to the literature on museum collecting.
This study draws on multiple sources of data to examine history collecting at
Te Papa. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with current curatorial staff and focus group discussions were held with members of the public. Current and previous policy documents that influence collecting at
Te Papa were also reviewed. These sources combine to develop a picture of collecting at
Te Papa which encompasses both specific details of staff practice and a further understanding of what qualities people seek in museum collection items.
This thesis provides vital details on the practice and implications of collecting using location, in this case New Zealand, as a selection guide. In examining how staff decide what to collect, concerns expressed in the existing literature about the power of individuals to shape what is acquired are also addressed. The extent to which the views of the general public and those of museum staff are shared is revealed. In developing a fuller understanding of what people think
Te Papa should collect, this research contributes to the debate about how to collect in ways that are sustainable. Collecting for New Zealand concludes by reflecting on the importance of audience to
Te Papa’s ongoing collecting activity.

▼ The restoration of indigenous rights to and interests in their traditional natural resources needs to be accompanied by practical ways in which indigenous values in relation to a resource can be met. Co-management or co-governance has emerged as an option for indigenous people in settling historical land and resource claims. Co-management offers a way in which governments and non-government entities such as and community or indigenous peoples can share decision-making over natural resources. However there are many different types and levels of co-management with, varying levels of participation and decision-making authority. Some are more effective than others at recognising indigenous values, authority and relationships. This dissertation discusses the New Zealand example of the co-management of the
Te Arawa Lakes and provides an initial assessment of its cultural and environmental goals.

▼ Going social presents a case study of how the Museum of New Zealand
Te Papa Tongarewa is incorporating social media across all aspects of its day-to-day business and public programmes. It also explores how the general public are using social media and what they think might be its value for museums. This dissertation addresses a gap in the literature in that little research has been undertaken in the field of social media and museums in New Zealand. Looking at social media use from a cross-institutional perspective is also something which has been neglected in the literature on this topic. Information is becoming increasingly digital and museums are beginning to feel the pressure to engage with active publics in this new online space. It is therefore crucial that more is understood about the impact this might have on organisations and the practicalities of implementing social media initiatives in museums.
This study draws on multiple sources of data to examine some of the issues involved in employing social media tools and platforms at
Te Papa. Interviews were conducted with staff drawn from the areas of marketing, the
Te Papa Picture Library, collections and research, exhibitions and concept development and IT, in order to provide a diverse and balanced perspective. This also served to highlight similarities or differences in the way that different directives use social media. Focus groups were conducted to address the secondary aim of acquiring public views. Finally,
Te Papa’s Statement of Intent 2010/11, 2011/12, 2012/13 and other documentary sources were used to provide insight into the degree that social media features in strategic and policy documents at
Te Papa.
It was found that different directives use social media in different ways depending on their unique aims and objectives. For example, marketing use social media to market exhibitions, events and public programmes, whereas staff within the area of collections and research use social media to provide access to, and promote, collections and collection-based information. Sharing museum information and content with internet users was a common goal, as was connecting with audiences and communities of interest in an informal and humourous way. Focus groups identified that the general public were most interested in gaining objective reviews and interpretations of museum content, along with behind the scenes insights. These findings are potentially valuable to museums as they move towards adopting a more strategic approach to social media use.

▼ This design led research advocates for an architecture indicative of the preceding history; that engages in an active dialogue with the site. Developed through shifting scales and media, the thesis investigates how architecture can give expression to the singularities of site. The milieu of erasures and the enduring traces are drawn to the surface and manifested across three design phases: 1 Chinese Garden, present condition; 2 Art School, past reflection; 3 Artist Colony, future projection. Through a process of editing, fragments are extended and retracted between the phases as more intense programs are introduced. The final design outcome is the result of an additive design methodology, developed across the course of the thesis. The design methodology is a model for combining sites in contemporary urban development; a model for co-existence of past and present into the future.

▼ The History of Te Aute College appears to be an unexplored, great, wide field, for developments in this, college effected the whole Maori race.
Hence it was with trepidation that this piece of research was started. Material was not scarce, so that to write a history which might not be too sketchy, could be done, but not within a hundred pages. So then the decision was made to write the "Early History of Te Aute College", adding an outline sketch of developments and policies leading up to the present day.

▼ M.A. University of Hawaii at Manoa 2012.
The research I present in this thesis is based on participant observations and interviews that I conducted over nineteen months with Lumanaki, extending from July 2010 to January 2012. Per the teachers' requests, I have helped students compose songs, complete classroom activities, and warm-up their voices for song and dance practices. I have also made audio and video recordings of several practices and performances as well as an introductory compact disc for new students who need help catching up with other students, a project that the teachers had been wanting to complete for quite some time. Through these experiences, I learned about the school and its activities, and I formulated questions to ask the adults who dedicate their time and energy to running the school. For this thesis, I worked with Lumanaki's executive director, Betty Ickes, and one of its two artistic directors, Bonnie Patelesio. Their wisdom greatly informs this work. A significant complement to the knowledge I gained at the school was the information I accessed through Hamilton Library's comprehensive Hawaiian and Pacific Collections. There are not many publications on Tokelau, but most if not all of them that exist are housed in the library's collection because of its dedication to the dissemination of knowledge and information about the region.

▼ Whaanau and schools in Dunedin developed an innovative solution to the issue of finding quality
te reo Māori teaching for fluent tamariki. Ka Puananii o
te Reo, a one day a week
te reo immersion class for Years 1 – 6, was launched on the 4th of February 2010 at Dunedin North Intermediate School.
This research explored the Kaa Puananii o
te Reo programme as a potential model of success for learning
te reo Maaori. The study used ‘interviews as chats’ with 6 tamariki, 3 rangatahi and 11 whānau members. The whaanau and tamariki perspective was necessary to develop an understanding of what participants thought was a successful model for the delivery of quality
te reo me ōna tikanga Māori. The goals of Ka Puananii o
te Reo were: greatly increased skills in
te reo Maori me ona tikanga; greater links between the tamariki and whānau across the city resulting in a new community of
te reo Maori speakers; and an emerging cohort of tamariki and rangatahi as the next generation of
te reo Maori speakers.
The three major themes, which emerged from the interviews, were engagement, whanaungatanga and cultural identity. The majority of the participants said they were happy with the programme, with tamariki learning and using more
te reo Maori, as well as increasing their level of
te reo reading and writing skills. Many found the high fluency levels of
te reo a challenge, prompting whānau to continue developing their own levels of
te reo within their home. The theme of ‘whanaungatanga’, the “principle of inter-relations” McNatty (2001) was identified as an important concept. Whānau described the process of ‘whanaungatanga’ as ‘growing little pockets of tamariki speaking
te reo’ as a step towards expanding the community of
te reo Māori speakers.
Numerous cultural benefits were identified, such as increases in emotional wellbeing, self-esteem, and the sense of pride to ‘be Maori’, and the development of wider cultural affiliations through the strengthening of links with Kura Kaupapa Maori ki Ōtepoti, whānau, hapū, and iwi members. Although it is difficult to attribute such outreach to the
te reo Maori community to Ka Puanani, whānau feedback indicated that there was an increase in the uptake of
te reo Maori, including the wider exploration and consideration of
te reo Maori immersion options.
The structure of this paper is based on the marae ātea process, the process of clearing the pathway forward. Karakia (prayer) is used at the start and end of this paper in accordance with Māori tikanga (custom) and whakatauākī (proverb) are used at the closure of each chapter.

▼ Tūwharetoa are a distinctive tribal group who are located within the central North Island. With a proud and celebrated history, Tūwharetoa evolved through out time to become a complex and unique tribe, containing a number of sub tribes, each with its own authority, structure and land holdings. However, like all Māori, Tūwharetoa were greatly affected by the impact of European colonisation. In particular the unique language and customs of Tūwharetoa where savaged by the policy of assimilation and the introduction of a new language and its cultural beliefs. Presently the traditional language of Tūwharetoa is in a perilous state, and regardless of the many Māori language initiatives that have been established over the past few decades, the special language of Tūwharetoa is declining. This thesis is concerned with understanding the reasons why the traditional language of Tūwharetoa finds itself in this position, while also assessing the initatives implemented by Tūwharetoa to rectify this situation. Furthermore this study will look to create a possible pathway forward for Tūwharetoa to support the regeneration and revitalisation of the language. Ultimately this thesis will propose a framework bedded within language planning theory, supported by a kaupapa Māori research methodology and founded within the beliefs of Tūwharetoa, to see the return of
te reo Māori as the main form of communication for the people of Tūwharetoa, and as a clear marker of our identity and uniqueness.

▼ Ngāti Tarāwhai are a unique tribal group from the
Te Arawa confederation of tribes. Located around their traditional stronghold of Lake Okataina, Tarāwhai have endured throughout history to become a proud and noble clan, maintaining their culture and distinctive tribal practises. Part of their survival throughout time has been their ability to rely on particular traits and attributes that have been portrayed and maintained by members of Tarāwhai across the generations. These special characteristics have not only supported the development of Tarāwhai, but have also helped the evolution of Tarāwhai’s identity.
This thesis is concerned with four aspects that have been identified as common traits throughout Ngāti Tarāwhai history. In particular, this study will look at the roles of leaders, tohunga, warriors and carving experts and explore how these qualities have featured significantly within Tarāwhai’s history for many generations. Furthermore, this thesis will discuss how these aspects have influenced the development of the tribe from early time through to the present day.
It is the proposition of this thesis that the above mentioned attributes have shaped the people of Tarāwhai into the tribal group that they are today. In addition, while Māori society has changed dramatically in the last 100 years, Tarāwhai continue to display these characteristics in a modern world, and they are still central to the reaffirmation of Tarāwhai identity and the overall wellbeing of the people. Finally this thesis believes that these attributes must be maintained and perpetuated for Tarāwhi to have a secure place in the future.

▼ Kaitiakitanga is a concept that is utilised widely throughout the Māori world for the protection and preservation of cultural aspects to Māori. Through years of application by westernised mainstream processes the value has largely been restricted to the realms of environmental protection. This restriction has often been the result of misinterpretation of Kaitiakitanga and its relevance as a concept to Māori. The purpose of the thesis is to question how the perspective of Kaitiakitanga is constructed in the minds of representatives from the hapū of
Te Parawhau. To test for variance, the research spans across two generations of hapū members. Using Whakawhiti Kōrero for data collection as well as Kaupapa Māori methodology as guidance, the thesis explores perspectives of two generations of
Te Parawhau descendants around Kaitiakitanga and how it can be developed to aid in the growth and prosperity of the hapū. Key themes highlighted by the analysis encompass ideas of connectedness as well as spiritual, physical, environmental and human elements of responsibility and obligation. The thesis introduces a distinct
Te Parawhau analytical framework for its analysis of rich kōrero by hapū members in relation to Kaitiakitanga. Through this framework the value of Kaitiakitanga is tested for relevance to
Te Parawhau and its future development. The world view of
Te Parawhau has formed the basis of participant perspectives around Kaitiakitanga and leads the researcher to consider that such knowledge is important to the future functionality of Māori value’s. The thesis concludes to show that there are indeed differences in application and perspectives of Kaitiakitanga within the hapū of
Te Parawhau.

▼ This thesis examines the collection of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century German, Dutch and Flemish prints at the Museum of New Zealand
Te Papa Tongarewa. Beginning with the donation of Bishop Monrad in 1869, prints from the Northern European schools have been added to the collection either through the generosity of private collectors or the museum's direct purchases which continue to the present day. The lives and collecting practices of these collectors are considered, as well as the artists and prints represented in the collection.
An analysis of the history of collecting prints from the Northern European schools demonstrates that their recognition as individual works of art was a rather slow process, whereas a canon of the great printmakers was established almost immediately. The place of Northern printmakers in this canon will be considered, as well as the changing ideas about prints and print collecting from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries. The most significant collectors for
Te Papa's print collection were Bishop Monrad and Sir John Ilott, who together donated more than half of the 164 prints analysed here.
While the collecting practices of Monrad and Ilott have been studied individually before, it is worthwhile comparing them and considering their reasons for buying fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Northern European prints in particular. They emerge as collectors with similar financial means, who both made use of agents and had direct contact with dealers. Other private individuals have also emerged as print collectors, who made significant contributions to the collection, yet they have remained mostly unknown until now. In addition to this,
Te Papa still has an active policy of purchasing more prints for the collection.
Finally the prints themselves are examined in detail, considering both their physical qualities and art historical significance, in order to highlight the strengths of the collection. Some prints from the collection will be analysed for the first time here, as no extensive research has previously been conducted on this particular part of
Te Papa's print collection, and some of the prints were added very recently and have thus not been available for viewing until now.

▼ Retention strategies in the nursing profession have been a significant subject among researchers for decades. The current shortages of these skilled professionals have reached an alarming extent globally, making it difficult for organisations to retain these workers, also in South Africa. It has become evident that nursing professionals from South Africa emigrate to other countries for more lucrative remuneration, sophisticated work resources and better career opportunities, impacting the South African economy and nursing workforce negatively.
The general objective of the research was to determine whether a relationship exists between intrinsic and extrinsic rewards, job satisfaction, organisational commitment and turnover intention among a group of South African healthcare workers in the private healthcare sector. Specifically of interest was also to see if nurses’ turnover intention could be predicted by the other variables.
A cross-sectional survey design was used. A convenience sample of 152 healthcare workers was obtained from three private hospitals in the Gauteng and North-West provinces. A measuring instrument for intrinsic and extrinsic rewards was adapted from a previous study, and applied with measures of job satisfaction, affective organisational commitment and turnover intention.
Results indicated that the measure of rewards did not present with sufficient reliability, and it was subjected to factor analysis. This delivered two reliable factors, which were labelled Objective experience of rewards and Perceived lacking organisational support. Objective experience of rewards showed to be significantly related to job satisfaction and inversely to turnover intention, and Perceived lacking organisational support was significantly negatively related to job satisfaction and positively to turnover intention. It was also seen that both job satisfaction and objective experience of rewards showed predictive value in terms of nurses’ turnover intention.
Conclusions and limitations regarding this study were made, and recommendations regarding the profession and future research are made.

▼ A hostess-type sex industry focused on servicing and accompanying clients is not illegal in Taiwan. However, such activities have been the target of police crack downs, because many hostesses who claimed to be serving drinks were in fact involved in sexual games or sexual transactions. Such actions have resulted in hostess workers being considered equivalent to sex workers. Although newspapers and magazines regularly expose the risks and harm faced by âChuan-
Bo Girls,â an emerging type of hostess workers, society in general has yet to pay significant attention to the matter.
Therefore, this study utilizes qualitative individual case research methods, with particular focus on subjective experience accounts from involved parties and to research and record the real circumstances of a âChuan-Boâ business. In-depth and detailed investigation is conducted with a focus on special industry âChuan-
Bo Company Aâ managers, girls, and related participants, and the obtained information is systematically organized to offer an appropriate explanation and analytical overview. In addition, the study uses relevant case material collection and participatory observation for collecting supplementary information. Based on the information collected and multiple comparison analysis performed, a deeper understanding of the problems will be found in this study.
âChuan-Boâ is an emerging industry in the past several years that provides hostess services wherever the clients want, therefore the workplace is not fixed and does not belong to the industry managers. Furthermore, a âChuan-
Bo Girlâ has flexible work times with high mobility, and the manager has no way to force her to come to work. Her work is primary about accompanying and servicing, whereas physical contact, indecent actions, and/or sexual transactions are generally not allowed. Business registration regulatory methods and tax rates should be prepared in a way that is more suitable to special industry regulations, otherwise the result may be industry participants processing registration under pretenses and operating outside of compliance, which will only induce more problems.
Relevant recommendations for follow-up research: (1) There are variances between each county and municipalityâs âChuan-Boâ industry regulations and business management strategies that require further research clarification to establish a Taiwan-wide âChuan-Boâ industry framework that can more specifically describe this industry and its market phenomena; (2) The âChuan-Boâ industry has been in existence for a long time, with its terms of the service contents and methods later transforming into being allowed to touch, remove clothing, or engage in sexual transactions. Could industry participants have different management approaches in view of the change Is a topic that requires further investigation.
