▼ The two most visible representations of Afghanistan are arguably Steve McCurry’s ‘Afghan Girl’ on the cover of National Geographic (June 1985) and Khaled Hosseini’s award-wining novel 'The Kite Runner' (2004). These two products laid the basic premise that images and ideas about Afghanistan have been circulated and commodified worldwide, especially qualities of the exotic, oppressed, and weak. Since print photography and literary works belong to the culture industry, this research seeks to enquire if performing arts, more specifically theatre, projected Afghanistan in similar ways. More precisely, this research asks how Afghan cultures and identities have been represented in the post-9/11 period. Borrowing the circuit of culture model (1997) from Stuart Hall and Paul du Gay, this research then examines ten specific theatre performances within Afghanistan and outside Afghanistan in a spatio-temporal framework illustrating dynamic tensions from, and beyond, Kabul. Case studies from Kabul illustrate that Afghan cultures can be owned and regulated by competing stakeholders, including the Taliban, within its geopolitical boundaries. Case studies from/beyond Kabul show the export of Afghan cultures and performances outside Afghanistan, underscoring tropes of impoverishment and suffering while inviting or inciting international interventions and conciliations. Case studies beyond Kabul tend to imagine ‘Afghanistan’ by offering an ambivalent, and sometimes, contradictory response to the war on terror. This thesis argues that projective closure – the act of filling in absences and gaps to make sense of an Afghan narrative – often circulates and entrenches Afghans in victimhood tropes. Because there are constant fluctuations and contestations at what ‘Afghanistan’ was, is, and should be, Afghanistan as an imagined entity – or a global cultural commodity – becomes more evident. Derek Gregory was right to observe in 'The Colonial Present' (2004) that Afghanistan has been an object of international geopolitical manoeuvrings since the nineteenth century, and, as this thesis will show, even early twenty-first century. But the claw of the “colonial present” does not stem from hostilities enacted by imperial power, but a series of intimate engagements with non-government organisations, government agencies, embassies, foreign theatre directors, and even global audiences who uncritically celebrate narratives of Afghan heroism. This is further complicated by the readiness of local Afghan practitioners to consume and project themselves as victims of war who are in ‘need’ of foreign help. As such, the value that is being demanded and supplied in the global culture industry is still victimhood. ▼ American superhero films have become a more popular genre in the film industry after September 11. The narrative structure has largely been the same since the start of comic books in the 1930’s; there is a bad guy who causes trouble, countered by a hero to save the day. The film industries basing themselves on comics serves entertainment purposes, but can they also be seen as something more politically relevant? American foreign policies have focused on the ‘war on terror’ after the September 11 terrorist attacks and an ‘us’ versus ‘them’ rhetoric has been more present ever since. The ‘axis of evil’ speeches of former president Bush jr. have been televised globally, and this mantra of ‘outsiders are enemies’ is continuously echoed in the current “from now on it will be America first” tactics of president Trump (and many more politicians worldwide). A binary division is not new in the history of mankind, especially when one examines the colonialism and imperialism of the West of past centuries. Its aftermath still has dire consequences for minorities, and it is relevant to examine whether popular culture reflects and comments on this. This thesis will analyse whether and to what extent certain policy trends and historical events are mimicked or reprimanded in the characters and narratives of box office hits of the Marvel and DC superhero films. This thesis will discuss the narratives of superhero films and their portrayal of characters with a relationship parallel to some of the American (foreign) policies of the past decades. It is important to consider to what extent government propaganda is reflected in this form of popular culture that both have a global reach and possibly extensive effects. In short, to what extent do the films reflect the fear of the ‘other’ and portray the gap between ‘us’ (heroes) and ‘the other’ (villains), and can we elucidate a tangible change in the these processes in the 2001-now timeframe? ▼ This thesis explores the relationship between blockbuster cinematic violence and its historical context in the period surrounding the events of September 11, 2001. It charts the trajectory of violence by showing that screen violence in successful blockbuster cinema responds to historical developments. Violence in this thesis is defined according to the tripartite definition of violence articulated by peace studies theorist Johan Galtung. In order to analyse the historical positioning of the violence in the blockbusters being analysed, tripartite violence has been fused with the diagnostic critique of cultural theorist Douglas Kellner, which “uses history to read texts and texts to read history” (Media 116). By synthesising the two theoretical frameworks in this way, the diagnostic critique becomes violence-calibrated, and can be readily deployed to discern the ways in which blockbuster screen violence engages with the historical context of the text. The texts analysed represent the top grossing film from each year from 1996 to 2003, a period selected for its political relationship to 9/11. The eight films analysed are: Independence Day, Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Spider-Man, and The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. This thesis shows that the films from the pre-9/11 period articulate a clear “dream” of a world that is defined in binary terms with a good Self in opposition to an evil Other that is always external. The trends found in the violent dreams begin to shift with The Grinch as the relationship between the Self and Other changes, but the transformation does not fully manifest itself until the post-9/11 period when the films are marked by paranoia stemming from the repeated appearance of an Other than can pass as the Self, and ultimately a Self that behaves like the Other. While the violence that is found in the pre-9/11 films “dreams” of the Bush response to 9/11, the post-9/11 films ultimate envision a future that the War on Terror could not deliver. In the end, this thesis will develop a methodology that can be used to explore blockbuster cinematic violence in terms of the nuances that exist between the three types of violence Galtung articulates: direct, structural, and cultural. ▼ Following the events that transpired after 9/11, evidence suggested that the mental health of Muslims across the globe was affected significantly, resulting in decreased wellness for members of this group. Hate crimes toward Muslims and those perceived as Muslim increased. Though the implications of this major event were evident for adults, little research has examined the ramifications on youth growing up during this time. In the present study, a grounded theory approach was utilized to examine the identity development of Muslims growing up in the age of the “war on terrorism.” Nine students (3 females, 6 males) participated in the current study, and represented undergraduate (4) and graduate students (5). Participants completed two phases of data collection. The first was an open-ended interview questionnaire completed online. The second phase consisted of an in-depth interview. The results of the present study yielded three models. The first described the experience of being Muslim on a Catholic campus. At the core of students’ experiences was an appreciation of the campus’ spirituality. It was defined by four interconnected dimensions: connection with a spiritual community; a sense of uniqueness and pride; appraisal of student attitudes; and overcoming challenges and barriers. The second model answered the primary question of the investigation which sought to understand the identity development of Muslim youth who grew up in the United States during 9/11. Results suggested a two-tiered interconnected multidimensional model, with a core made up of the collectivistic self. The inner ring of the model depicts elements most central to the participants’ identity and included: family; ethnic heritage; and religion (Islam). The outer ring illustrates domain that were also important but less salient and included: region; field of study; ethnic minorities; social justice; hobbies; and SES. The third model was a moderation model and depicted the effects of 9/11 on participants’ lives. It was evident that participants were exposed to discrimination and resulting negative repercussions. Despite this, their positive coping strategies appeared to significantly mitigate its effects. Limitations and challenges of the present study are discussed. ▼ The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks catalyzed powerful pressures for strategic reorientation across many channels of U.S. foreign policy. This dissertation explains why non-military policy patterns alternately withstood or conformed to post-9/11 demands for change. I argue that policies were a function of varied security rationales. The president pushed for increasingly discretionary authority in order to link foreign economic issues with shifting bilateral security goals. With respect to regulatory issues, the president wanted to impose constraints on prior discretion so that cross-border flows of funds, goods, and people might be more rigidly scrutinized. These security motivations interacted with existing political coalitions and economic interests, producing differential lines of resistance. I apply this argument to four issue-areas: (1) U.S. foreign aid allocation and (2) the administration of trade preferences for developing countries, both areas that involved status quo legislative constraints on executive authority; (3) visa issuance, in which organizational processes inhibited change from above; and (4) international anti-money laundering, in which organizations outside of the U.S. government wielded considerable authority. The empirical analysis employs new datasets, statistical methods, and in-depth case studies. Mirroring other periods of heightened security concern, the evidence cumulatively shows that increased presidential foreign policy authority reached well beyond conventional areas of security policy. Even so, a diverse range of state and private stakeholders contested issue linkages forged on the basis of national security priorities. The politics of responding optimally to terrorism have been tightly related to the political economy of globalization. My conclusion therefore stresses the enduring importance of synthesizing security-oriented and political economy perspectives for studying critical foreign policy junctures. ▼ Pro gradu -tutkielmani tavoitteena on osoittaa, että eteläafrikkalaisen J.M. Coetzeen romaanin Waiting for the Barbarians (1980) tapahtumat voidaan rinnastaa USA:n toimiin terrorisminvastaisessa sodassa, jonka se julisti vuonna 2001, syyskuun 11. päivän terrori-iskujen jälkeen. Esitän, että Coetzeen romaanin Imperiumi ja USA kummatkin käyttävät kansakunnan tuntemaa turvattomuutta ja pelkoa hyväkseen julistaakseen poikkeustilan, joka sallii väkivallan ja kidutuksen käytön vihollisen etsimiseksi ja tuhoamiseksi, sekä antaa mahdollisuuden hallita ja alistaa omia kansalaisia. Lisäksi sekä Coetzeen Imperiumi, että USA edustavat omassa retoriikassaan sivistystä, oikeamielisyyttä ja ylivertaisuutta, kun taas vihollinen kuvataan julmana ja primitiivisenä. Tutkielmani teoriaosiossa käsittelen ensin sitä, kuinka vuonna 1980 julkaistu eteläafrikkalainen romaani on ylipäänsä mielekästä rinnastaa USA:ssa vuonna 2001 alkunsa saaneisiin tapahtumiin. Poikkeukselliset tapahtumat vaativat vanhempien tekstien uudelleentulkintaa, joka paljastaa tässä tapauksessa esimerkiksi poikkeustilan, valtion hyväksymän kidutuksen ja väkivallankäytön olevan toistuvia ilmiöitä historiassa. USA:n kutsuminen imperiumiksi ei ole välttämättä aivan yksioikoista, joten teoriaosiossa osoitan myös, että se on paitsi sallittavaa, myös suotavaa. Amerikkalaiseen imperialismiin liittyy ekseptionalismin käsite. Se on ideologia, joka antaa USA:lle oikeutuksen toimia maailmalla varsin ylimieliselläkin tavalla, ja se on ollut läsnä amerikkalaisessa diskurssissa aina siitä lähtien, kun puritaanit mantereelle astuivat. Viimeiseksi teoriaosiossani esittelen italialaisen filosofin Giorgio Agambenin poikkeustilateorian. Teoksessaan State of Exception (2005) hän väittää, että elämme nykyään globaalissa poikkeustilassa, josta USA:n Patriot Act on hyvä esimerkki. Tutkielmani analyysiosio jakautuu kolmeen lukuun. Luvussa kolme pyrin näyttämään, että sekä USA:n että Coetzeen romaanin Imperiumin harjoittaman väkivallan ja kidutuksen oikeutus pohjautuu perustavanlaatuiseen me vastaan he -ideologiaan. Siinä länsimainen, ja ennen kaikkea amerikkalainen, ylivertaisuus ja erinomaisuus antaa oikeutuksen tiedotusvälineissä ja propagandassa demonisoidun vihollisen tuhoamiseen ja häpäisemiseen. Kappaleessa neljä yhdistän Agambenin poikkeustilakäsitteen ja Donald E. Peasen teorian state fantasy of exceptionalism , jossa kansalaiset pitävät paradoksaalisesti itse yllä poikkeustilaa. Viidennessä luvussa tutkin Foucault n erittelemiä kidutuksen muotoja (kuulusteleva, spektaakkelinomainen, terroristinen), sekä sitä, mikä on kidutuksen todellinen motiivi virallisen syyn, tietojen hankinnan, sijaan. Analysoin myös romaanin kidutuskohtausten ja Abu Ghraibissa ja Guantánamo Bayssa tapahtuneiden kidutustapausten yhtäläisyyksiä. Lopuksi osoitan, kuinka kappaleissa kolme ja neljä käsittelemäni poikkeustilan ja ekseptionalismin käsitteet sekä sivistynyt/barbaari -dikotomia ovat vaikuttaneet väkivallan, sodan ja kidutuksen sallimiseen demokraattisten arvojen puolustamisen nimissä.

▼ This case study focuses on curriculum development for creating critical skills enhancement curriculum that qualifies for the Post 9/11 Government Issued (GI) Educational Bill, as well as providing a cohort structure that helps deal with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and lifestyle transitional related issues. Not all returning Post 9/11 veterans are seeking a two or four year college degree in higher education. What those veterans need is a way to transition their Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) skills into jobs that are in demand within the current business environment. That transition of skills can range from basic business courses to refresher courses in math and soft computer skills. Returning veterans trying to acquire these critical skill enhancements find that these types of courses do not meet the requirements set forth by the current GI bill. The current Post 9/11 GI Bill will only pay for educational courses that leads to a two or four year degree or courses that fulfill a job license requirement. This study provides a framework for addressing this problem and makes recommendations for changes in procedures and curriculum that can be supported by the current Post 9/11 GI Bill. The results of this case study suggests that developing a condensed curriculum provides Post 9/11 veterans with the skills needed to secure gainful employment in a minimal timeframe. The condensed curriculum follows the course requirements for an undergraduate degree and thus qualifies for the Post 9/11 GI Bill Educational Benefits. The Post 9/11 GI Bill Educational Benefits provides the veteran with tuition assistance, books, housing and living allowance during their skills enhancement training. This case study also suggests that the development of a veteran’s cohort greatly reduces transition anxieties as well as the anxieties associated with PTSD and other closely associated mental disorders. The findings of this case study points to the fact that universities and colleges need to change their curriculum to address the Post 9/11 veteran’s educational needs. A presente dissertação tem por objetivo compreender de que maneira se dá a representação do trauma em Let the Great World Spin (2009), do premiado autor irlandês, Colum McCann. O romance foi escrito para falar sobre os ataques terroristas de 11 de Setembro de 2001, Nova Iorque, muito embora o evento não tenha sido diretamente mencionado no romance. A análise levou em conta declarações do próprio autor, de que não importa sobre o que escreva, é sempre sobre a Irlanda que fala e com isso houve a necessidade de se encontrar traumas comuns a Irlanda e aos Estados Unidos. Sendo essa a razão pela qual os aspectos \'imigraçãoé \'famíliaf́azem parte deste estudo, pois a emigração repercutiu enormemente na configuração da família irlandesa. Ao ambientar o romance na Nova Iorque de 7 de Agosto de 1974, o autor já estabelece um distanciamento temporal e um recorte específico em que semelhanças entre 1974 e 2001 são realçadas no romance. A presença do artista francês Philippe Petit, que andou em um cabo de aço estendido entre as torres gêmeas, no que ficou conhecido como o maior crime artístico do século XX, estabelece a metáfora com o que em 2001 ficou conhecido como o maior ato terrorista do século XXI. Autores como Sztompka, Versluys, Smelser e Gibbs foram norteadores para a evolução da análise do trauma retratado no texto de Colum McCann. O romance opera com um grande número de vozes narrativas, provocando uma polifonia que atende ao objetivo do autor de dificultar ao máximo a estereotipia de suas personagens.

This dissertation is concerned with the representation of trauma in the award-winning celebrated Irish writer Colum McCann\'s novel, Let the Great World Spin (2009). The novel was written about the terrorist attacks of 9/11, in New York. Although the event is never directly mentioned within the text. My analysis took account of some statements made by the author to the effect that no matter what he writes about, he is always talking about Ireland. This creates the need to find common traumas between Ireland and the United States. For this reason, the topics of \'migrationánd \'familyáre part of this dissertation, as emigration impacted enormously on the compostion of the Irish family. Moreover, setting the novel in New York, on 7 August, 1974, suggests a temporal distancing in which commonalities between 1974 and 2001 are highlighted in the novel. The presence of the French artist, Philippe Petit, who walked in a tightrope between the Twin Towers, as a reference to the biggest artistic crime of the 20th Century, establishes the metaphorical link to what may be understood as the most savage terrorist act of the 21st Century. Scholars such as Sztompka, Versluys, Smelser and Gibbs were highly useful to the development of the analysis of the trauma portrayed in Colum McCann\'s text. The novel provides a polyphony of narrative voices, which assist the author to avoid stereotyping the characters.

▼ This study is based upon a three year ethnography with the 9/11 Truth Movement involving field work in their online and offline milieus. In addition, a critical discourse analysis of texts produced by their countermovement antagonists has been employed to highlight movement-countermovement interactional dynamics. The 9/11 Truth Movement questions the official and commonly agreed upon narrative of how the events of September 11, 2001, occurred. The questions are posed to the public, public officials, media, themselves, and to their countermovement antagonists. For posing such questions as, "Did you know a 3rd tower fell on 9/11," and asking why the collapse of World Trade Center Building 7 was excluded from The 9/11 Commission Report, countermovement antagonists employ the conspiracy label. Terms such as "conspiracy theorists," "conspiracy theories," "conspiracists," and "conspiracism" are regularly used to discredit the 9/11 Truth Movement and its members. The 9/11 Truth Movement's members and countermovement antagonists recognize the discursive function of the conspiracy label, which is to limit debate and impede critical attention to the movement's empirical claims about the problematic nature of the events of September 11, 2001. The present study emphasizes the presence of a discursive field in the movement's public problems marketplace that tilts an already unlevel communicative environment further in disfavor of the 9/11 Truth Movement. Continued use of the conspiracy label to categorize and discredit people who doubt or who ask socially disturbing questions about official stories, like that found in The 9/11 Commission Report, undermines ethical treatment of human subjects in the social and behavioral sciences, and it threatens to disrupt communicative actions and the free flow of information necessary for democracies to function. Unless their empirical claims can be proven false, "conspiracy theorist" is nothing less than a derogatory slur used to avoid direct, rigorous assessment of troubling arguments that potentially uncover systemic forms of corruption, domination, and oppression. 11 settembre 2001: il World Trade Center, luogo “sicuro e inaccessibile” come la nazione di cui faceva parte, crolla insieme alle certezze del popolo americano. Ci sono state conseguenze nel cinema? Il titolo di questo progetto di ricerca, 9/11: la 25ª ora del cinema americano, già rappresenta una convinzione: il cinema americano dopo l’11 settembre è entrato in una nuova fase. Partendo da un'analisi delle pellicole direttamente coinvolte nella messa in scena degli attentati, il progetto si articola in due macro-sezioni: la prima impostata come una diretta sull’ “evento”; la seconda inerente al periodo successivo all’accaduto. Il cardine della prima è l'analisi del concetto di “ri-narrazione ossessiva” in quei film che lavorano per allegorie e simbologie dell’11 settembre. La focalizzazione della seconda, invece, sono i “nuovi modelli delle catastrofi interiori” in epoca post-11 settembre e l’analisi delle modalità di rappresentazione dei cambiamenti degli stati d’animo e delle incertezze da parte del cinema americano. In particolare, verrà dato ampio spazio alla teoria del trauma, quale sezione fondante. Al termine, una conclusione che ambisce a tirare le fila di una ricerca a cui non si può mettere la parola “fine”, ma che è, al contrario e necessariamente, in continuo divenire.

September, 11th 2001: the World Trade Center, a “safe and inaccessible” place as the Country it belongs to, collapses together with the American people’s certainties. Did this event bring any consequences in cinematography? The title of this research: “9/11: the 25th hour of American cinema” states a firm belief: American cinematography has entered a new phase after September 11th. Starting from analyzing the movies directly involved in representing the attacks, the project develops through two marco-sections: the first one set as “live on the event”; the second one referring to the period that came after it. The key-point of the first section is the concept of “obsessive re-narrating” in those movies showing allegories and symbologies of September 11th. The focus of the second one, on the other hand, consists of the “new models of interior catastrophes” in the post-September 11th era and of analyzing the ways American cinematography represents uncertainty and changes in the people’s state of mind. In particular, the trauma theory will be widely treated as a ground section. In the end, a conclusion that aims at summarizing a research that cannot lead to an ultimate “end”, but which is on the contrary, and necessarily, in continuous evolution.
