▼ This thesis is a study of the Islamist discourse on terrorism and how western countries are constructed in four Indonesian magazines, Tempo, Gatra, Sabili and SuaraHidayatullah, in relation to the five
bombings which took place in Indonesia. I define the first two magazines as the general magazines and the last two as the Islamist magazines. The
bombings coverage analysed is that of the
Bali bombings 1 and 2, the JW Marriott 1 bombing, the Australian Embassy bombing and the JW Marriott 2/Ritz Carlton bombing. The first study is of the bomb which killed or injured more than 200 people in Kuta,
Bali, an area which attracts large numbers of international tourists; the second is of the bomb which exploded in Jimbaran,
Bali, also a tourist area; and the last three studies are of the
bombings of icons of ‘the West.’ In addition, the way in which the readers of the magazines responded to the reporting of the five
bombings analysed is also examined. To address the topic, I conducted research in the offices of four magazines in Jakarta. I copied articles from the Gatra, Sabili and Suara Hidayatullah offices, and Tempo provided me with digital copies. I also interviewed two or three journalists/editors from each magazine. Further, I conducted focus group discussions for the readers of the magazines. Ten focus groups were involved during the fieldwork. There were two groups for each magazine and the other two groups involved readers of both the general and Islamist magazines. The examination of the two general magazines shows that each constructs a different anti-western Islamist discourse in its reports on the terrorism. Gatra, in part, presents the Islamist view and construct that western countries are opposed to Islam, and therefore conspiracy theories concerning who was responsible for the
bombings are likely to be true. Tempo, on the other hand, does not present an anti-western Islamist view in its reports. Mainstream views of terrorism are dominant. The comparison of the Islamist magazines shows a similarity in how the Islamists construct anti-western Islamist discourse in their reports. Both Sabili and Suara Hidayatullah view the western countries, mainly the United States, as anti-Islam and as enemies who would try to destroy and undermine Islam. The readers of the magazines generally perceive terrorism in Indonesia from an Islamist perspective, although they do not agree with acts of violence. The readers of both the general and Islamist magazines perceive the western countries (particularly the United States) as being in opposition to Islam and Muslims. The
bombings which occurred in Indonesia are viewed with the suspicion that the western countries were involved. These findings show, partly, the Islamisation of society in the social and political context in contemporary Indonesia. They show not only that Islamisation exists in society (as exemplified by the readers), but that, to some extent, the media institution also has been Islamised. In the reform era, the Islamist magazines have the space and opportunity to…

▼ Terrorism and atrocities have scarred the public memory in the
late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Three
atrocities, the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, the 1996 massacre at
Port Arthur Historic Site in Tasmania, Australia, and the 2002
Bali bombings, had a significant impact on the communities they
most affected. How did the differing governments and communities
at these sites respond to the sudden loss of life? How were the
competing agendas of these groups managed ? Are there shared and
distinctive characteristics in the memorialisation of atrocitites
across these countries at the turn of the millenium?
In responding to these questions, this study analyses cultural
differences in memorialisation at contemporary atrocity sites. It
examines the differing responses at the case study sites to the
planning and the timing of memorials, the engagement of those
affected, the memorial designs and the management of the
memorials, including tributes. It is an original comparative
study of contemporary memorialisation by a heritage professional
directly involved in the management of memorials at contemporary
atrocity sites.
The original research includes the identification of the role the
internet in contemporary memorialisation, an in-depth analysis of
the memorialisation of the 1996 massacre at Port Arthur Historic
Site, and the memorialisation in Bali and across Australia of the
2002 Bali bombings. It extends the current scholarship on the
memorialisation of the Oklahoma City bombing through identifying
the impact of the internet in the memorialisation and in the
timeframe of the analysis through to the 15th anniversary in
2010. The comparative analysis of the management of tributes at
all the sites identified issues not previously considered in
Australian scholarship: that tributes and the response to them
is part of the memorialisation and management of contemporary
atrocity sites.
A combined research method based on an interpretive social
science approach was adopted. A range of methodogies were used,
including literature reviews, analysis of electronic material,
site visits, unstructured in-depth interviews, and
participant-observation at memorial services. Studies on history,
memory and memorialisation provided the framework for my analysis
and led to an original proposal, that all three sites have shared
histories of the memorialisation of war and ‘missing’
memorialisation. These shared histories, I argue, strengthened
the justification for this comparative study.
This comparative study identified differences across the case
study countries in the designs of the built memorials, in
legislation enacted after the atrocities, the responses to the
perpetrators, the marking of anniversaries, and in the management
of tributes left at the sites. These…

▼ This research discusses the tourism crisis management approach used in handling the recovery of
Bali as a tourism destination after the first Bali bombings in 2002 and second Bali bombings in
2005. It acknowledges the importance of a crisis management especially in a situation where the
crisis repeatedly occurs in the same place and targeted the similar target. This research examines
the crisis management approach through the tourism public policy formulated and implemented
by the government of Indonesia. An external perspective from the industry private sector is also
investigated as many scholars note that other observations and opinion from senior executives
following every episode are necessary because they have different perceptions of the crises.
Finally, an investigation of any existence of organisational learning the first and second Bali
bombings is also presented. This research concludes in three new findings. First, the Indonesian
government did not present any crisis management framework after the first and second Bali
Bombings; rather they established a National Recovery Program that lacks few main aspects of
crisis management. Second, although the Indonesian government initiated the recovery program
after the first Bali Bombings it was the private sector (Bali Tourism Board) who initially
instigated the recovery program after the second Bali Bombings. Third, the absence of an
organisational learning was also discovered after the first and second Bali Bombings incidents

Culture shock and moral panic. An analysis of three mainstream Australian newspapers' response to the Bali bombings in October 2002 and the arrest of smiling Amrozi on November 2002.

▼ On the night of 12 October 2002, two bombs exploded in Bali, killing more than 200
people. The first bomb exploded in Paddy's bar, a well known Irish pub in Kuta and was
followed by a bigger explosion less than a minute later at the Sari Club. Both were
popular venues for Australian tourists. 88 Australians were killed and 196 were injured.
The 'Bali bombing', as it came to be known in the media, became a tragedy for all
Australians. The Australian media reported this tragedy by covering the stories of
victims, the investigation into the bombing, political negotiations between the Indonesian
and Australian governments and the capture of some of those allegedly responsible,
including the man dubbed 'smiling Amrozi' by the media.
This thesis will examine the way three mainstream Australian newspapers reported on the
Bali bombing. The three publications, The Australian, The Sydney Morning Herald and
The Australian Financial Review were chosen. The analysis will concentrate on the first
seven days of coverage of the Bali bombing and the first four days of coverage after the
interrogation of Amrozi. This thesis will focus on five different topics: Australian pain,
'Australia owns Bali', Indonesian pain, 'smiling Amrozi' and the way the three selected
Australian newspapers reported on Islam.
The coverage of the Bali bombing during the first week after the blast emphasised
Australian pain and devastation. The press concentrated on the idea that the Bali
bombing was an Australian tragedy and implied a sense of ownership over Bali. Bali had been one of Australia's most popular tourist destinations for decades, and after the event,
the press reported that 'Terror hits home', and that Australians had lost their paradise.
The focus of reporting was on the Australians affected and little room was left for the
Indonesians who, especially the Balinese, also lost people in the bombing. The bombing
was an economic disaster for the Balinese who lost a large part of their tourist industry,
Bali's main income.
The coverage, particularly the reporting of the arrest of Amrozi and his reaction, revealed
a cultural divide between Australia and Indonesia. Amrozi' s smiling created confusion
and anger throughout the Australian community. Confusion also occurred during the
reporting of the Bali bombing, with some members of the Australian Muslim community
being mistreated by Australians who wrongly believed that Islam has an inherent
connection to terrorism.

▼ Introduction. In the past decade terrorist attacks and suicide bombings have killed, injured and intimidated thousands of people in many countries. In the aftermath of an attack a significant proportion of the population present with symptoms of depression, post traumatic stress disorder, and physical health problems (Boscarino & Adams, 2009, Norris et al., 2002, Bride, 2007 ). The present study examined the impact of the Bali bombings in 2002 when two bombs were deliberately exploded in the Sari night club and Paddy’s bar, in the popular tourist area of Kuta, in Bali, Indonesia.Aim of the study. The overarching aim of the study were to examine the multilayered effects and forms of support received by directly affected victims and their indirectly affected family members in both Indonesia and Australia. The perceptions of members of the Indonesian and Australian emergency response teams, community volunteers and key informants were also examined.Methods. A qualitative case study approach was used in this study, as it was important that participants told their story in their own words and according to their own unique experiences. In total 50 in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted in Bali and Perth, with first and secondary level victims, professional and volunteer responders, and key informants. An in-depth analysis of available literature was also undertaken with a focus on the multilayered effects of terrorist attacks and the forms of post attack support that is offered to victims and their families. Other qualitative methods such as home visits, observations and documentary data collection facilitated triangulation of the data. In addition a personal reflective diary recorded the observations of the researcher during a two month field trip in Bali in early 2008.The conceptual framework for this study was based around the work of the Psychosocial Working Group (2003). Within this framework three dimensions relating to resources that help people cope in the aftermath of a disaster are explored. They are: human capacity (encompassing the skills and knowledge of the people); social ecology (encompassing familial, religious and cultural resources) and finally culture and values (encompassing cultural values, beliefs and practices). The framework was modified in this study to enhance the examination of the participant responses using the concepts of disrupted and reinforced resources.Results. In both Bali and Perth victims of all levels reported many symptoms of distress in the initial aftermath of the bombing. Most of the effects reported could be termed normal distress reactions to a very abnormal event. The poor economic situation in Bali appeared to compound and exacerbate the effects for many of the Balinese victims. As a result many of the injured and their families were left almost destitute. A number of victims described symptoms such as depression, suicidal ideations and fear during thunderstorms and the many cultural celebrations on the island. In Bali and…

▼ In Balinese, a distinction is made between different types of stories. While fiction, unsourced mythological tales and hearsay stories are known as satua, there are a specific group of cultural narratives, carrying a different set of meanings altogether, which are identified as tattwa. Stories described as tattwa do something that goes beyond providing information, entertainment, or instruction (even though they may also do any or all of these things.) This thesis is about what tattwa narratives are and what they do. What is it that makes tattwa narratives different from other stories? How do tattwa narratives enliven the past in the present; engender intimate encounters with elements of the world which cant be seen; and produce real effects on bodies and in the world today? The thesis combines ethnographic research and creative writing, and takes shape through two distinct forms, a Dissertation and a Screenplay. While structurally different, both of these projects share an abiding preoccupation: how best to model the efficacy of tattwa? How might emulating particular Balinese narrative devices, such as juxtaposing different types of stories and storytelling styles, serve to not only portray but to enact the potency of tattwa as lived cultural knowledge?

The study takes interest in understanding the EU’s actorness and the EU as a normative actor with and within Southeast Asia through a reflectivist lens. The thesis is an attempt to provide a new perspective on a relationship commonly assessed from an economic angle. It outlines the opportunity of non-traditional security (NTS) challenges to enhance EU actorness and normative influence in Southeast Asia.
Against this backdrop, the study explores the dialogue and cooperative initiatives of two regions, which attach relatively little salience to each other. The study employs a NTS lens and draws upon the case of the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997-98, the haze in relation to forest governance, the Bali bombings of 2002 and the political conflict in Aceh. The study assumes that these NTS issues can stimulate processes of threat convergence as well as threat ‘othering’. It argues that these processes enhance European engagement in Southeast Asia and contribute to shaping regional stability in Southeast Asia. Furthermore, NTS crises present situations, where norms can become unstable, contested and substituted. This allows us to better examine the EU as a normative actor.
To establish an understanding of the EU’s actorness and the EU as a normative actor, the empirical evidence will focus on the threat perceptions, motivations of action and activities of the EU and its member states. For the purpose of differentiating the EU as a normative actor, the study will also include the discussion of the normative objectives and behaviours of the EU and its member states and apply a reflectivist theoretical framework.
Hypothetically, NTS crises trigger external assistance and normative influence and thus, they offer an opportunity to establish a more nuanced picture of the EU in the region. At the same time, the study acknowledges that there are a variety of constraints and variables that complicate the EU’s actorness. The thesis seeks to identify and discuss these. So far, scholarly publications have failed to apply the NTS perspective systematically. This thesis provides the first monograph-length treatment of the EU in Southeast Asia through a NTS and reflectivist lens.

▼ Every year large quantities of plastic waste accumulate in Bali’s environment. This has a negative impact on Bali’s environment, local society and its tourist driven economy. With lacking waste management facilities and local awareness plastic waste enters Bali’s rivers, through which the waste ends up in the ocean. A concept small-scale recycling business, aiming to improve local waste management and awareness, is proposed to solve the problem at the source. The goal of this research is to investigate the technological, social and financial feasibility of the concept recycling business and to find a target location. The research first aims to choose three potential locations with different social-demographics through a literature study on Bali’s regional social-demographics and the results of previous ”Pantai” Project researches. Based on this three locations are chosen: Denpasar, Canggu and Pulukan. For better understanding of the areas of interest, the crucial steps for setting up a business on
Bali and its local waste management are investigated. A detailed stakeholder analysis is therefore also conducted. This is researched through participatory observation, literature study and interviews with local inhabitants, local businesses and governmental institutions. Surveys are conducted in the areas of interest to analyze how to Balinese handles their plastic waste, their mentality towards the plastic problem and their willingness to participate in the concept recycling plan. The results of the survey show enthusiasm of the local people towards the concept recycling business in the target areas. However, not all stakeholders are represented in conducted surveys, thus care must be taken when concluding the social feasibility. To investigate the technological feasibility literature study is done on plastics and different techniques in all steps of the recycling chain. Through this, feasible techniques for all steps of the recycling chain are chosen, regarding the concept recycling business. Plastic waste is to be sorted by hand and processed by easy operable machinery based on the open-source designs of Precious Plastic. A conceptual model of the small-scale recycling business is introduced for better understanding of the plastic and money streams involved in the concept recycling facility. To investigate the financial feasibility, first the plastic stream is evaluated. In each location households separated and collected all their plastic from the rest of their waste for one week to estimate the composition and quantity of their weekly plastic waste production. From this result the plastic input per location is estimated through calculations. A model is presented to evaluate financial stability of the concept recycling business. Input values for the model are the results from own waste collection measurements and the values acquired from connected parties. Calculations show, although being a rough estimate, financial feasibility. However more in-depth market study has to be performed for more detailed results. Taking…

Surfers travel around the world in search of perfect waves. Oftentimes this quest leads them to remote areas in developing nations. Over time these places become more popular and the development related to tourism follows.
While it may seem like a straightforward economic activity, tourism is a complex interaction that involves groups that have differing and often conflicting goals. The stakeholders include the local community, tourists, private sector businesses, tourist organizations, governments, non-profit organizations and international organizations. The type and scale of development that is appropriate depends on many factors that are unique to each place. Decisions about the construction, location and operations determine a project’s impact on the local community and the environment.
This research analyzes the impact surf tourism has had on the coastal development in Bali, Indonesia including infrastructure, building and environmental impacts. As a result, I designed accommodations for traveling surfers that enhance the positive aspects of tourism while mitigating the negative impacts. The accommodations were designed so that a community could build the structures using locally sourced materials and labor, thereby, adding support to the Balinese economy. The project used passive strategies to reduce the demands on natural resources and is as self-sufficient as possible. I believe that an environmentally sensitive, architecturally and culturally appropriate design that benefits the community can be realized.

▼ The construction of the Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali in 1969 facilitated the birth of mass tourism on the island, as well as an increasing concentration of tourist-centered developments. As the tourism industry now constitutes 70% of the island’s GDP, tourist-dominant developments are highly economically profitable, but often culturally and environmentally unsustainable. Developments are continuously pushing boundaries into an increasing number of neighboring towns as tourists persistently search for “untouched” territories offering “authentic” cultural experiences. In the context of an island, with a finite amount of land, these sprawling developments are confronted with both physical and environmental constraints.
The thesis seeks to propose an alternate form of tourism development that works cyclically, leveraging seasonal activities over time, rather than one that sprawls outward. Departing from traditional notions of static developments, the thesis questions the possibilities of designing infrastructures that work in synchrony with contextual cycles. The design of a networked infrastructure investigates how tourist developments and local economies can cycle between periods of high activity, periods of dormancy, and periods of regeneration. The proposal also seeks to question how an infrastructure could facilitate a symbiotic relationship between tourism and agriculture, effectively managing resources between the two industries through these cyclical periods. In addition how can these strategies generate new spatial experiences for tourists? How can spaces facilitate the possibilities of enhanced translatability in terms of the different stakeholders involved and their unique aspirations and often competing desires?

Basin analysis and hydrocarbon potential of the Bali Basin with expanded geothermal heat flow map of Indonesia.

▼ The
Bali Basin is a frontier basin located behind the mid-Sunda Arc, a chain of
island arc volcanoes extending over 5,000 km throughout Southeast Asia. The
depths of back-arc basins in combination with complex tectonic motion along
the Sunda Arc, can supply the conditions required for hydrocarbon generation and
the creation of successful petroleum traps. For this reason, hydrocarbon bearing
basins in the central and western Sunda Arc are responsible for Indonesia’s high
rate of oil production. Abundant oil and gas fields are found in the North, Central,
and South Sumatra Basins, as well as the Northwest and Northeast Java Basins.
Hydrocarbon production declines in the
Bali Basin east of these areas and does not
increase throughout the remainder of the eastern Sunda Arc. The
Bali Basin has
minimal production to date, but this basin has only a limited exploration history.
A model of the
Bali Basin constructed in IHS Petra was used to correlate
stratigraphic units between 35 wells. This study regards the Ngimbang Shale Unit
to be the potential source of hydrocarbons in the
Bali Basin. Studies on the
Ngimbang Formation report total organic carbon levels of 0.40-71.88% with type II
and III kerogen. These hydrocarbons are expected to have migrated directly into limestone beds of the overlying Kujung Formation. Gamma ray and sonic log
records were used to calculate an average primary reservoir effective porosity of
17.5%. Carbonaceous shale of the Tuban Formation acts as the sealing unit; if the
Tuban Formation has produced hydrocarbons, a secondary petroleum system could
exist where these hydrocarbons have migrated upward to be stored in porous
sandstone of the Paciran Formation and sealed by impermeable clay of the Lidah
Formation. Based on seismic interpretations off north-shore Madura and
Bali,
hydrocarbon plays are expected where inversion tectonics thrust low-lying strata
above overlying layers. Additional Eocene shale plays could be found along
structural closures and where stratigraphic wedges onlap basement rocks.
Source rock maturity could be affected by back-arc subduction along the
Flores Thrust Zone. For this reason, the
Bali Basin model was created in
conjunction with a heat flow analysis.
Bali Basin wells were found to have an
average heat flow (Q value) of 122.3 mW/m
2 and an average bottom hole
temperature of 78.0°C. This analysis was expanded to include a comprehensive heat
flow map of the Southeast Pacific Region. Thermal gradients were calculated from
total depths and bottom hole temperatures recorded from 857 wells across
Indonesia and Malaysia, in combination with thermal conductivity values
corresponding to bottom hole lithologies, in order to calculate the Q value of each
well.
The depositional and tectonic chronology of the
Bali Basin supports the
generation and entrapment of hydrocarbons. This information, in combination with
quality source rocks, porous reservoirs, and a laterally extensive sealing formation, shape promising hydrocarbon prospectivity for the…

▼ This research centres on the Balinese performance tradition known as topeng which translates as Balinese masked dance-drama. In Bali this genre is performed traditionally in spaces reserved for religious ceremonies. The research questions the extent to which, and how, it may be possible for a non-Balinese person to embody a culturally coded, sacred object (the mask) and how a woman is able to make meaning and express herself within a genre which is traditionally the preserve of men. The research has therefore sought to develop an individual and intercultural approach to both the design of new masks and their performance. The thesis critiques modes of cultural understanding in relation to notions of balance, based on colonial and dualistic trajectories between Bali and the UK. Alternative modes of exchange explore in-between and hybrid space that is informed by Lo and Gilbert’s dynamic model of intercultural practice which they visualise as a ‘spinning disc held by an elastic band’ (Gilbert and Lo 2002: 45). The key issues explored are notions of training; the relocation of ritual and the cultural specificities of ‘home’; mask-making and design; non-Balinese stories on which to base alternative performances of topeng, ones that more strongly position female characters; and finally the embodiment of Balinese masks from a traditional and also a somatic perspective. The practical form the research takes is through making masks and devising performances, the outcomes of which form a part of the thesis. The thesis both discusses and practically demonstrates how particular modes of embodiment, for instance cakra work, somatics and experiential anatomy may serve as strategies to communicate to a Western perspective how to bring ‘life’ to the mask, how to make it ‘work’ from a Balinese position and how these modes can assist in the process of intercultural (self) translation.

▼ Volcanic and magmatic processes are controlled by the composition of the magmas involved and the nature and structure of their underlying plumbing systems. To understand and predict volcanic behaviour, it is of critical importance to characterize the associated magmatic plumbing and supply system. This study investigates the magma plumbing system beneath Bali, Indonesia by employing several thermobarometric models using mineral phases in lavas from the simultaneous eruptions of Agung and Batur volcanoes in 1963 and the 1974 eruption of Batur. Compositional data were acquired from feldspar, pyroxene, and olivine crystals, using electron microprobe analysis, as well as from whole-rock samples using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Clinopyroxene-melt and clinopyroxene composition thermobarometers were then applied to equilibrated clinopyroxene-melt couples, while plagioclase-melt thermobarometry was employed on equilibrated plagioclase-melt pairs. The results were used to construct comprehensive magmatic plumbing models for Agung and Batur and are compared with geochemical, geophysical and petrological data on these volcanoes and others in the region. For the 1963 Agung eruption, results from clinopyroxene-melt thermobarometry suggest dominant crystallisation levels between 18 and 22 km depth. Clinopyroxene from the 1963 eruption of Batur record crystallisation depths between 12 and 18 km, whereas clinopyroxene from the 1974 Batur eruption show a main crystallisation level between 15 and 19 km. Furthermore, plagioclase-melt thermobarometry indicates the existence of shallow level magma reservoirs, with depths between 3 and 7 km for the 1963 eruption of Agung, between 2 and 4 km for the 1963 Batur eruption and between 3 and 5 km for the 1974 Batur event. The deep magma storage regions notably coincide with lithological boundaries in the crust and mantle beneath Bali, while the shallow reservoirs are consistent with recent geophysical studies that point to regional shallow-level magma storage. An along-arc comparison reveals this trend to be characteristic of Sunda arc magma storage systems and highlights the utility of a thermobarometric approach to detect multi-level systems beneath recently active volcanic systems.

▼ Community assembly of the gut microbiota is believed to be achieved through an interaction between the host’s lifestyle and genetic. Failure to address these populationspecific factors may lead to unsuccessful detection of obesity patterns in the human gut microbiota. This thesis aimed to extricate lifestyle and genotypic patterns from the human gut microbiota, and to identify obesity patterns in the microbiota of a population with defined lifestyle and ethnogeography. This study utilized the unique cultural and ethnogeography characteristics of Bali people. In the first part of this thesis, the faecal microbiota of 36 ethnic Balinese individuals was compared by obesity, diet patterns (through food frequency questionnaire), and genetic lineage (through mitochondrial DNA [mtDNA] haplotyping). Subjects with non-R mtDNA haplogroup were found to have a higher prevalence of Prevotella-dominated enterotype and higher risk of developing obesity. Moreover, the enterotypes were found to be linked to long-term diet patterns, particularly to choices of staple foods in meals. In the second part of this thesis, the microbiota of 41 Bali individuals was contrasted with the microbiota of 283 other people from 7 ethnogeographically distinct rural and urban populations. Principal Coordinate Analyses of the unweighted Unifrac distance placed Bali individuals between the rural and urban samples, reflecting Bali’s status as a newlyindustrialised society. Urbanisation is also associated with the abundance of Prevotella and Bacteroides across populations, but not obesity. Collectively, these findings highlighted that perpetuating host factors (lifestyle, genotype) are drivers of microbial community assembly in the human gut. Importantly, this thesis showed that understanding the genetic and socio-cultural context of a population could be the key to effective identification of microbial biomarkers in obesity.

▼ In this study, I investigate how travelling to Bali has impacted the lives and sense of self of individual Australian women research participants. I use a phenomenological and feminist qualitative research approach. Many Australians have travelled to Bali since the late 1960s, but little is known about what impacts their experiences have had on them, and there has been no social science research on this topic. Drawing on the work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, I focus on how Australian women's sense of self emerges out of the dynamic process of their interaction with Bali the place, and with the Balinese people and culture. I explore three dimensions of women's embodied lived experience: their engagement with the physical world of Bali, including nature and the human-built environment; the social world of Bali, where the body is the medium of interpersonal and intercultural communication; and the spiritual world of Bali, including encounters with Balinese Hinduism and other religions. Women's account of life-changing experiences and aspects of personal transformation arising from their experiences are central to the discussion. Thirty Australian women from metropolitan and regional NSW, ACT, Victoria, Queensland, and Western Australia, aged from their late teens to early nineties, participated in open-ended interviews for the study. All the women had been to Bali many times; some had lived there intermittently, or were permanent residents. One woman had converted to Balinese Hinduism. My analysis shows that Australian women's engagement with Bali is consistent with Merleau-Ponty's account of the intercorporeal process as the means by which, as human beings, we reach out to expand our horizons and embody change and complexity, including in cross-cultural contexts.

▼ This study employed a qualitative content analysis to explore how major U.S. newspapers used human-interest and emotional frames in their portrayal of runners in the month after the Boston Marathon
Bombings. The Boston Marathon
Bombings represented the first crisis event of their kind at a large running event. The current study analyzed a census of 15 news articles in major U.S. newspapers that focused on the Boston Marathon
Bombings and running and that were published between April 15 and May 13, 2013. This filled a key gap in existing research regarding how the media used human-interest and emotional frames to portray runners one month after the crisis event. Results found that major U.S. newspapers framed the responses and motivations of runners as the result of individual (e.g., using running to overcome personal obstacles) and community (e.g., a strong group identity) dynamics. Results also showed how the media utilized anger and sadness in its emotional framing
strategy and portrayed runners as vulnerable to future attacks. However, it also showed how they were determined to continue running and attending running events. The results of this study are beneficial to practitioners who target the running community by helping them craft effective immediate and long-term crisis communication strategies.

▼ Violent radicalization is considered to be the process of adopting an extremist belief system, including the willingness to use, support, or facilitate violence as a method to affect social change. This phenomenon poses an important and serious threat worldwide. Since the attacks on the US in 2001 and around the world, popular interest in understanding the "causes of violent radicalization" resulted in an increased awareness of its processes (Hegghammer, 2006). Not only concentrating on the root causes of violent radicalization, but distinguishing them from a more moderate and mainstream perspective becomes crucial for societies and countries as well. There are several models suggesting that there are various entry points, variables and personality types that influence violent radicalization. Although current scholarship on violent radicalization is replete with studies that adapt a one-size-fits-all approach, there is a paucity of research on the determinant factors that make the ordinary individual become involved in violent action or that enable disillusionment of the individuals to go to further stages resulting in a terrorist plot. This study aims to examine the violent radicalization process from a Muslim-dominated country‘s (Turkey) perspective and argues that the phases of the violent radicalization process should be considered in a different fashion or manner than that of the West. Such a perspective will help to identify the significant features of phenomenon – such as the impact of psychosocial variables, frustration, contemporary conflicts, discourses of the violent terrorist organizations - and plan successful and effective responses. Moreover, it claims that misunderstanding key verses of Islam inevitably push moderates and otherwise tranquil individuals to involve themselves with extremist and violent terrorist organizations like the Al-Qaeda. The primary focus of the study will be on ideology, training camps and psychosocial traits that shaped the violent radicalization of the individuals in Turkey. Additionally, misinterpretations of key religious verses and consequences will be discussed. This study will use the datasets from terrorist-suspects‘ (n= 128) court-collected testimonies, which were obtained after the 2003 Istanbul Bombings. The researcher will utilize discriminant analysis to determine: (1) which of the variables are useful in predicting involvement in a violent terrorist attack; (2) how these variables might be combined into a mathematical equation to predict the most likely outcome; and (3) the accuracy of the derived equation. Findings of the analysis, policy implications and suggestions for future studies will be proposed in conclusion.

▼ After the fall of president Suharto in 1998, Indonesia's regime change into democracy has caused a rise of ethnic mobilization and conflicts throughout the Indonesian archipelago. As many regions emphasized their ethnic identity, on the island of
Bali this has been demonstrated in the emergence of an ethnic movement called Ajeg
Bali ('
Bali standing strong') in
2002. Under the leadership of the local media mogul Satria Naradha, CEO of the
Bali Post Media Group, the Ajeg
Bali movement has experienced a rise in its popularity, especially in the context of the Islamic terroristic attacks in the same year. Yet, recent years have shown an decline in the mobilization of the Ajeg
Bali movement, which in fact goes hand in hand with a more general declining trend of ethnic identity politics throughout Indonesia. This thesis tries to explain the possible interpretations of Ajeg
Bali's decline and what kind of light this can shed on ethnic demobilization in the rest of Indonesia.

The daily offering ritual, small ceremony integrated into the daily lives of most Balinese families, by its thorough analysis and comparison with other ritual and non-ritual levels of Balinese culture, helps shed light on some basic structuring principles of Balinese ritual life. The Balinese domestic space is a structured unit strongly determined by Balinese culture's essential principles, and it is also the knot that unites these principles and hence allows their transmission and maintenance. The daily domestic offerings create a specific atmosphere that presupposes the attention of invisible entities. An essential part of what constitutes Balinese culture is anchored into the domestic unit, and brought into attention by daily rituals. It is the case with the crucial hierarchical oppositions of high and low and the hierarchised cardinal directions, that are reflected even in non-ritual practice like daily orientation or the direction people turn when sleeping. The homology between the microcosm of the body and the microcosm of Bali or the Universe is mediated through the microcosm of the domestic space. The principle of ancestrality, the base through which Balinese are connected with a large series of social groups and even to the island, this principle…

▼ The thesis provided an analysis of online media coverage of terrorist bombings in London in 2005. As the consequence of the attacks, the controversy over the link between Islam and Islamist terrorism loomed large in the mass media, effectively creating a number of media discourses. It was argued that media discourses have effects on socio-cultural and discourse practices of the readership. Thus, the discourse practice of media text production was the primary focus of analysis in the thesis. The data for the research was sourced from the online versions of Telegraph and The Guardian. The keywords for the search were Al-Qaeda. Each of the texts was published in the last three weeks of July 2005. The texts selected for the analysis included extensive reference to Islam and war, as the themes of religion and war were followed in the analysis. The research was carried out in the form of critical discourse analysis (CDA), with the focus on the concept of ideology as common sense, the majority-minority relations, the abuse of social power, manipulation, discrimination, inequality and cultural racism. The proponents of CDA state as their aim the uncovering of the connections between the use of language and the exercise of power, or how language works in the socio-cultural and discourse practices. The work of Norman Fairclough provided the main methodological and theoretical tenets for the thesis. In the data analysis, one of the primary aims was in the identification of the ‘ideational’, ‘interpersonal’ and ‘textual’ functions of the text: how the world and events were represented, how social subjects and the relationships between them were constructed and the sequential structure of the texts. The attention was also given to the presence of traces of ideological “common sense” assumptions, the employment of manipulative discourses, the intertextual use of other texts whereby a shared knowledge between the text producer and the text consumer was presupposed in the construction of the intertextual context. The results of the analysis pointed out to a sharp distinction between the texts from The Guardian and those from Telegraph. The Telegraph texts featured discursive strategies whereby the problem of terrorism was constructed chiefly in the domain of religion and the responsibility for the attacks was seemingly allocated to wider Muslim communities. The discursive subjects and the inter-subject relationships were also constructed along the lines of religion. The subject relationships suggested high degrees of demonization of the Other. The ‘war on terrorism’ was generally viewed as preventive against terrorism. The discursive strategies of the Telegraph authors also contained attempts at ideological common sense construction and suggestions of unequal power relations on the ethnic majority-minority level. The texts sourced from The Guardian generally constructed terrorism in the domain of religious extremism, effectively allocating the responsibility for the attacks to the smaller groups of extremists…

▼ Continuous effort has been made to profile the suicide bomber and the topic is as relevant as ever. News about suicide attacks in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and recently Somalia are covered in the news weekly, however, it rarely makes the front page anymore as they have become regular incidents across the world. Research on the topic suggests that there is no clear profile or single formula for a suicide bomber, and an individual engages in such practices because of mixed motivations. The typical suicide bomber is not mentally ill, desperate, poor, or uneducated, but usually healthy, well-educated, in his late teens/early twenties, but most importantly, anyone can become a suicide bomber provided the right condition. Future trends suggest that suicide terrorists use far more advanced methods compared to a decade ago and they are more difficult to spot. There has also been a change in target selection, and at present the main targets are civilians. The purpose of this study is to identify the suicide bomber and to provide a plentiful description of motivational factors in addition to detecting patterns from past behavior to future trends. This study concentrated primarily on Palestinian suicide bombers (Israel, the West Bank and Gaza).

The impact assessment of tourism development on agricultural land use : a case study of the impact on traditional village land use patterns in Bali.

▼ The impact of tourism development on traditional village land use patterns, as perceived and evaluated by villagers, should be considered in evaluating the desirability of particular development programs or projects for regions such as Bali. The preservation of Balinese culture is accepted as an essential goal by virtually everyone in Indonesia, especially in Bali, but inevitably there is a continuing debate over the negative and positive impacts of the intrusion of massive tourism development on that culture.
Tourism development cannot occur in Bali without the loss of some agricultural land, some changes in traditional village land use patterns, and some decline of Balinese culture. There will always be conflict between traditional systems and modernization in the process of economic growth. The problems of preserving traditional cultural values and managing the pressures of modernization should be clearly formulated, based primarily on the society's perception and evaluation of the impact of growth on its goal preferences.
Planners must refine their understanding of community interests in order to analyze and evaluate the impact of a given program or project on a given society, communicate with the proponents and opponents, understand their objectives and measure the community's perceptions and evaluations of the impacts.
The impact of tourism development is discussed in relation to the loss of agricultural land, the change in traditional village land-use patterns and the decline of traditional Balinese culture.
In order to achieve the major goals, continued growth of the region and maintainance of its cultural values, those cultural values which depend upon agricultural activities must first be identified. Specifically, it is assumed that there are strong relationships between agricultural land-use, traditional village land-use patterns, and Balinese culture. Because tourism development in Bali relies heavily upon the Balinese culture to attract the tourists, it is assumed that tourism development directly or indirectly alters traditional village land-use patterns, 'especially agricultural land-use. The effect of continued uncontrolled tourism will be a decline in agricultural land-use and a change in traditional village land-use patterns, directly affecting Balinese culture. This would then reduce the appeal of Bali as a tourist attraction.
The hypothesis of the study is that those villagers who are in the areas most affected by tourism development will have less traditional attitudes towards the retention of traditional land-use than those who are in isolated areas. Knowledge of these local community attitudes is an important factor in helping to mediate and plan to avoid the conflict between tourism development and traditional systems. This is particularly the case in the Balinese example, where a strong communal system is at the root of the culture.
To clarify the above assumptions and to test this hypothesis, the study was organized in four stages: a review of the literature dealing with Bali, a…

▼ Tourist destination
Bali is internationally known for its dynamic culture and the resilience it has shown over the years with the increase of mass tourism from all corners of the globe. The Balinese people are often praised for their ability to adapt perfectly and at the same time not losing grip over their own cultural identity, despite the demanding environment due to the large influx of foreigners. The relatively new, yet popular philosophy of Tri Hita Karana (aspiring harmonious relationships) lies at the basis of the versatile attitude towards tourism of the Balinese people. The now omnipresent and most famous brands Facebook, Twitter, Instagram have worked their way into everyday life and have become a vast medium for the spread of information, entertainment and various other forms of content and are therefore widely represented in the tourist industry. It is through these social media networks that representations about a certain tourist destination are created and shared with a mass audience. Tourists often seek authentic experiences of traditional culture that are intensively promoted by government institutions, local tourist offices and other social media platforms such as travel blogs made by tourists from all over the world. “How does social media contribute to the construction of (staged) authenticity within Balinese culture and what is the significance of this in light of the Balinese philosophy Tri Hita Karana?”. The answer is best seen in the creation of the Kecak dance and the developments of the Tirta Empul temple. While the Kecak dance has been created as entertainment for tourists, it is very often presented as a traditional, cultural and historic performance, which becomes evident through the Instagram and travel blogs of tourists. The Balinese are thus effectively staging the dance as something authentic to their culture. However, it serves as good example of the Balinese Tri Hita Karana, by adapting in order to create a harmonious relationship between tourists and Balinese. Thus, one could in turn suggest that the Kecak dance can be seen as something authentic Balinese. The Tirta Empul temple is
subject to the same process of harmonization, where tourists are allowed to enter and partake in the temple’s rituals. However, this temple is something inherently authentic, traditional, cultural, historic and sacred to
Bali from the start, making the acceptance of unknowing tourists, who prioritize the aesthetic over substantive meaning, into this place a source of de-authentication. This also becomes clear when looking at the Instagram posts and travel blogs. Nevertheless, the same process of Tri Hita Karana that allows these tourists in this place, can be argued to turn such adaptation to foreigners into something authentically Balinese.

▼ Moral imagination can be defined as an act or process that involves the consideration of a moral-ethical tension and the generation of a novel and appropriate course of action that accommodates the situation. The purpose of this study was to understand how, if at all, might Balinese leaders demonstrate moral imagination using their sociocultural values. The following supporting research questions frame this study: (a) What sociocultural values inform the process by which Balinese leaders approach moral-ethical tension? (b) What specific interventions are part of Balinese leaders’ process in achieving their stated vision? (c) How, if at all, might the stated sociocultural values inform the process by which Balinese leaders develop and implement interventions?
Through a series of 60-90 minute interviews, this qualitative cross-case analysis examined 13 Balinese leaders representing various professions. This study found a collection of sociocultural values that clustered into two main categories—harmonic values (subcategorized into macroharmonic and microharmonic values) and dharmic values. Macroharmonic values included having a relationship with nature, one‘s community, and God or spirit. In addition, experiencing internal harmony of one‘s thoughts, words, and actions as well as one‘s wisdom, motivation, and apathy were microharmonic values found to be of importance to leaders in this study. Dharmic values included having a reverence toward the traditional past; providing economic, cultural, and natural resources for future generations; and paying attention to karma pala, or the consequences one is creating through one‘s own actions in the world.
Findings from this study reveal that morally imaginative Balinese leaders from various professions intervened in their sociocultural system in three ways: (a) by developing creative practices related to their line of work, (b) developing creative spaces for transformation, and (c) finding creative ways to construct relationships. Study findings also reveal that Balinese sociocultural values informed how leaders in this study perceived and intervened in their sociocultural context, established intentionality to accomplish difficult feats, involved others in their decision-making, and used supporting actions that sustained their creative decision-making and work process. This study offers deep insight into the interrelationship between sociocultural values and moral imagination from a unique indigenous perspective.
