▼ In the era of the big data, we create and collect lots of data from all different kinds of sources: the Internet, the sensors, the consumer market, and so on. Many of the data are coming sequentially, and would like to be processed and understood quickly. One classic way of analyzing data is based on batch processing, in which the data is stored and analyzed in an offline fashion. However, when the volume of the data is too large, it is much more difficult and time-consuming to do batch processing than sequential processing. What’s more, sequential data is usually changing dynamically, and needs to be understood on-the-fly in order to capture the changes. Online Convex Optimization (OCO) is a popular framework that matches the above sequential data processing requirement. Applications using OCO include online routing, online auctions, online classification and regression, as well as online resource allocation. Due to the general applicability of OCO to the sequential data and the rigorous theoretical guarantee, it has attracted lots of researchers to develop useful algorithms to fulfill different needs. In this thesis, we show our contributions to OCO’s development by designing algorithms to adapt to changing environments. In the first part of the thesis, we propose algorithms to have better adaptivity by examining the notion of dynamic regret, which compares the algorithm’s cumulative loss against that incurred by a comparison sequence. Dynamic regret extends a common performance measure known as static regret. Since it may not be known whether the environment is dynamic or not, it is desirable to take advantage of both regrets by having a trade-off between them. To achieve that, we discuss recursive least-squares algorithms and show how forgetting factors can be used to develop new OCO algorithms that have such a regret trade-off. More specifically, we rigorously characterize the effect of forgetting factors for a class of online Newton algorithms. For exp-concave or strongly convex objective, the improved dynamic regret of max{O(log T),O(√{TV })} is achieved, where V is a bound on the path length of the comparison sequence. In particular, we show how classic recursive least-squares with a forgetting factor achieves this dynamic regret bound. By varying V , we obtain the regret trade-off. In order to obtain more computationally efficient algorithm, we also propose a novel gradient descent step size rule for strongly convex functions, which recovers the dynamic regret bounds described above. For smooth problems, we can obtain static regret of O(T^1−β) and dynamic regret of O(T^βV^*), where β∈(0,1) and V^* is the path length of the sequence of minimizers. By varying β, we obtain the regret trade-off. The second part of the thesis describes how to design efficient algorithms to adapt to the changing environments. ▼ I employed several paleoenvironmental proxies by utilizing deep sea sediment from the largest marginal basin in east Asia, namely the South China Sea (SCS), to reconstruct the long term paleoenvironmental variation in SE Asia since the Neogene. Sediments deposited within the SCS were mainly delivered by several major fluvial systems whose catchment basins cover several geological blocks in SE Asia. By analyzing the sediment’s geochemical and mineralogical characteristics, several indices which are affected by the source of the sedimentary influx, as well as the weathering state could be built and applied to constrain my paleoenvironmental reconstructions Two deep sea drilling sites, International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) U1433 and U1435, from the SW and N of SCS were retrieved and used in this study. Bulk geochemistry and isotopic measurements were applied to the samples from Site U1433. Results indicate major provenance changes at 8 Ma. Geochronological U-Pb measurements of detrital zircon grains were conducted on the samples from Site U1435, as well as 11 modern samples from Pearl River tributaries. As the northern SCS’s chemical weathering and erosion variability has been well documented by previous studies, my interest in this site focused on constraining the provenance records, especially in the pre-Oligocene interval. Results indicate that during the Eocene sediment was most likely delivered via several small-scale local rivers from Cathaysia Block, rather than Indochina Block or Palawan,as proposed by several other studies. With both N and SW sub-basin’s provenance record well established, I applied a spectral reflectance proxy (565/435), to reconstruct the paleoenvironmental conditions by quantifying the variation between hematite and goethite. Results of spectral reflectance were also combined with several other commonly used paleoenvironmental proxies, such as K/Al, Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA), clay mineral assemblages and pollen records. Both N and SW of SCS’s paleoenvironmental records were compared and analyzed. The two complete spectral reflectance records imply that the northern and SW SCS underwent two types of climatic conditions with different rainfall intensities since Neogene. Northward migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone since 10 Ma was considered to lead to this climatic discrepancy.

▼ The progress being made in the field of magnetic recording is extremely fast. The need to keep this progress going, leads to new types of recording materials which require advanced measurement systems and measurement procedures. Furthermore, the existing measurement methods need to be reviewed as due to the differing morphology of novel materials the conventional way to interpretate the measurement results might have become inadequate. These three tasks (development of measurement systems, development of measurement procedures and a review of existing methods) were the main subject of the research described in this thesis. Design specifications and choice of the measurement system. With the decreasing bit-size, the behaviour on micro- or even nano-scale becomes increasingly important. At the same time macroscopical measurements can assist the knowledge and understanding of the new media, especially if combined with observations on the micro-scale. The macroscopical measurements will then present information on the average behaviour of millions or billions of entities where the micro-investigations should ideally detect the behaviour of the individual entities, which could be either grains, particles or domains. In chapter one we have seen that macro-scopical measurements should be used for determining the macroscopical parameters like coercivity and saturation magnetisation. Furthermore, they should be used for angular, vectorial investigations and if possible for obtaining on the average interaction in the media as it is believed that interaction on the scale of the written bits will eventually determine the performance of recording systems. An extrapolation into the future of recording materials, leads to the following desired specifications of a future macroscopical measurement system: · A sensitivity of 10 nAm2 or better (when 1cm2 samples are used, otherwise higher). · High field (³ 2500 kA/m). · The possibility to measure at zero and other static fields with a field resolution of at least 0.1 kA/m. · A vector detection system and rotatable field over at least ± 180°. · Flexible control software that allows the addition and quick implementation of new measurements. · Fast, easy to operate and maintain. In the second chapter several existing macroscopical measurement systems have been compared, leading to the conclusion that the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) is the most suitable instrument for this task. The most competitive other systems are either extremely difficult to handle and slow (SQUIDs) or not suitable for measurements at completely static fields (AGFM). ▼ This thesis describes aspects of the use of magnetic force microscopy for the study of magnetic recording media. The maximum achievable storage density in magnetic recording is limited by the magnetic reversal behaviour of the medium and by the stability of the written information. The shape and size of the small magnetic units (bits as wen as domaiDs) in the media is strongly correlated to the microstructure of the layers. Surface roughness, colurnnar structure of the layer, segregation of the elements inside the crystallites as wen as surface and volume defects influence the size and shape of the magnetic structures in the layer. The physicallimit for the bit size is estimated to be about 50 x 50 Dm. Such an increase in bit writing density requires a magnetic microscopy technique which can image magnetic details of about 10 Dm size. The advantage of magnetic force microscopy for this purpose lies in the easy sample preparation, combined with a high achievable resolution. In Chapter 2 we have discussed the optimisation of the tip shape, the tip magnetic properties as weIl as the detection mode in order to reach the required resolution. It is shown there that an elongated magnetic needIe can combine a sufficient volume with a small tip front end and is therefore superior to a soft tip which should have a spherical shape. Por the bar type tip we have calculated a one-dimensional transfer function which relates the spatial frequency components of the force ( or force deri vati ve ) to the spatial frequency components of the sample magnetisation distribution. This transfer function depends on the sample thickness, the tip magnetic layer thickness, the tip length and the tip sample separation and shows a behaviour very similar to the readback frequency characteristics of a magnetic recording channel. With a given detector sensitivity a minimum detectable wavelength Ac can be determined from the transfer function which serves as a measure for the comparison of different detection modes. Prom this comparison, for maximum resolution an MFM should be operated in a constant distance dynamic mode with a low oscillation amplitude. The tip has to have a high Ms and Hc. The tip coercivity has to be a result of the shape anisotropy due to the high aspect ratio of the needIe like magnetic tip layer . In Chapter 3 the instrumentation of an S FM scan head is described. This scan head win be applied for MFM measurements in extemal magnetic fields of arbitrary direction with respect to the sample. Por this purpose it has to be operated between the poles of a resisti ve electromagnet in a vacuum in order to increase the Q factor of the resonating cantilever . in dynamic detection mode. The properties of the scan head are: -Extemal magnetic field: continuously between -1.8 T and 1.8 T, with a 1 p pm long term stability -Scan range: about 40 ~m -Detection limit: 0.1 Dm in a 1 kHz bandwidth -Scan head size: 26 x 30 x 42 mm -Complete software control of the whole instrument The instrument is controlled by two digital signal processor (DSP)… Advisors/Committee Members: Popma, Th.J.A., Lodder, J.C..

A presente tese ?? resultado de uma pesquisa no campo da Educa????o, desenvolvido no ??mbito do Programa de P??s-Gradua????o em Educa????o da Universidade Federal da Bahia. O estudo tem a tradi????o filos??fica, antropol??gica e sociol??gica como base da sua configura????o epistemol??gica e emerge em meio aos temas que v??m contribuindo na compreens??o dos processos de subjetiva????es. A partir de uma metodologia etnol??gica, a presente pesquisa se debru??a sobre as artes de nutrir. De forma mais apurada, se det??m nos processos formativos das merendeiras escolares. Assim, procuramos compreender de que modo a subjetividade vem sendo problematizada e quais suas implica????es na vida/forma????o atrav??s da rela????o entre educa????o e alimenta????o. Desse modo, a investiga????o delineou-se a partir de dois campos de for??a ou linhas de tens??o: uma de car??ter mais geral, centrada na cr??tica cultural e na dicot??mica rela????o estabelecida entre natureza e cultura, e, outra, centrada no estudo de um caso espec??fico: as estudantes do Curso T??cnico de Alimenta????o Escolar, do Instituto Federal da Bahia ??? IFBa. A partir da clivagem em apre??o e pelas peculiaridades do objeto em quest??o, vimos surgir todo um panorama do que passamos a chamar de experi??ncias limiares. Com isso, pudemos ressaltar a capacidade de transforma????o e ultrapassagem que as experi??ncias comportam, mesmo quando acreditamos estarem imersas e emparedadas pelos c??digos e esquemas do poder e disciplina. Ent??o, tamb??m se buscou ressaltar toda uma conjuntura em que os processos formativos e as pr??ticas curriculares podem ser melhor compreendidos a partir das pr??prias experi??ncias de transgress??o e das inelid??veis artes de nutrir, enquanto um dos imperiosos processos vitais, que, em se fazendo, cria ambientes, como o da cozinha.

Abstract This thesis is the result of a research in the field of education, developed as part of the PostGraduate Program in Education of the Federal University of Bahia. Trata-se de uma tese sobre a mobiliza????o dos saberes pedag??gicos no cotidiano de uma experi??ncia formativa de um curso de licenciatura em Educa????o F??sica de uma universidade p??blica baiana. Teve como objetivo geral compreender como se constituem os saberes pedag??gicos na forma????o inicial em EF e, como objetivos espec??ficos, caracterizar o PIBID no contexto das pol??ticas de forma????o, analisar se os futuros professores de EF identificam seus saberes pedag??gicos e identificar os saberes pedag??gicos mobilizados pelos futuros professores de EF. A pergunta norteadora da pesquisa ??: Como os saberes pedag??gicos v??m sendo mobilizados pelos futuros professores de EF na experi??ncia do PIBID? Toma-se como refer??ncia a epistemologia da pr??tica, a teoria dos saberes docentes e a sociologia da experi??ncia. Para tanto, realizamos um estudo de caso qualitativo, de inspira????o dial??tica e que investigou a forma????o e as pr??ticas pedag??gicas de 9 (nove) futuros professores que participam de um projeto do curso de Licenciatura em EF durante tr??s (3) anos. Os futuros professores de EF foram acompanhados neste processo formativo, desde a sua prepara????o para o ingresso na escola campo at?? a realiza????o de suas atividades na escola. Foram realizadas observa????es sistem??ticas das pr??ticas pedag??gicas dos futuros professores de EF, com elabora????o de um di??rio de pesquisa, e entrevistas semiestruturadas. Ap??s a recolha das informa????es, as mesmas foram organizadas, analisadas e discutidas. A tese se constitui a partir de tr??s eixos norteadores: a caracteriza????o do PIBID, a identifica????o e mobiliza????o dos saberes pedag??gicos pelos futuros professores de EF e o cotidiano da experi??ncia formativa, que se inscrevem em 7 (sete) cap??tulos. Primeiro, no qual apresenta-se a implica????o do autor, o objeto de estudo, sua problematiza????o, seus objetivos e a relev??ncia social e cient??fica da pesquisa. Segundo, onde exp??e-se a fundamenta????o te??rica e delineiam-se os conceitos de partida. Terceiro, aborda-se como se deu a investiga????o dos saberes pedag??gicos. No quarto cap??tulo, faz-se a caracteriza????o do PIBID. This work has as its object of analysis the manga japanese comics comic book titled Kozure Ookami, in its literal translation, The Wolf with his Cub, by Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima, created and published in Japan from 1970 to 1976. The goal of this study was the search for an understanding of the process of penetration and acting that manga does in society and how they are problematizadas different dimensions and social practices, as well as the subject, their collisions and clashes that permeate the narratives and social roles that these represent these. The choice of this manga as source search gave for its uniqueness and richness as a narrative, offering a infinity of possibilities for historical study. Extends the basic comics, this research was to identify and highlight social practices, collisions, aspirations, values and sensitivities that are present in the worldview of Koike and Kojima, while historical subjects who experience their experiences, inserted within the social fabricin a dialogicidade relationship with his own time and everyday life. Contrasting with the font used, the analysis was conducted using various documents, and can thus capture stays, ruptures and resistance that were present in Japanese society of post-World War II, characterized by large-scale process of capitalist development

Este trabalho tem como objeto de análise o mangá revista em quadrinhos japonesa intitulado Kozure Ookami, em sua tradução literal, O Lobo Acompanhado de seu Filhote, de autoria de Kazuo Koike e Goseki Kojima, criado e publicado no Japão, de 1970 a 1976. O objetivo deste estudo foi a busca por um entendimento sobre o processo de penetração e atuação que o mangá realiza na sociedade e como são problematizadas as diferentes dimensões e práticas sociais presentes, assim como os sujeitos, seus embates e os enfrentamentos que permeiam as narrativas e os papéis sociais que estes representam nestas. A escolha deste mangá como fonte de pesquisa se deu por sua singularidade e riqueza como veículo narrativo, oferecendo uma infinidade de possibilidades para o estudo histórico. Partindo dos quadrinhos base desta pesquisa, foi possível identificar e evidenciar práticas sociais diversas, embates, anseios, valores e sensibilidades que estão presentes na visão de mundo de Koike e Kojima, enquanto sujeitos históricos que vivenciam suas experiências, inseridos dentro do tecido social, numa relação de dialogicidade com sua própria época e cotidiano. Contrapondo com a fonte utilizada, a análise foi realizada utilizando documentos diversos, sendo possível assim, captar permanências, rupturas e resistências que estavam presentes na sociedade japonesa do pós-Segunda Guerra Mundial, caracterizada pelo processo em larga escala de desenvolvimento capitalista

Losartan consists a new generation of antihypertensive drugs which antagonizes the hypertensive action of the peptidic hormone Angiotensin II at the AT1 receptor site. Due to the biological importance of losartan, its conformational properties have been explored using a combination of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Molecular Modeling in order to comprehend on its Molecular Basis of action. The spectroscopic studies have been performed in different environments in order to reveal the stereochemical and stereoelectronic parameters that govern its conformational properties and consequently its bioactivity. The obtained results showed that only the lipophilic pharmacophore segment of alkyl chain is sensitive to environmental modifications. It is known that losartan exerts its biological action at the transmembrane region of the receptor. Due to this reason, spin label radicals have been used for the investigation of the drug topography in micelles, an environment which simulates lipid bilayers. Experimental results showed that losartan is located at the intermediate polarity site of the micelles so as to optimize its amphoteric interactions. Similar experiments were carried out with losartan’s primary potent metabolite EXP 3174. The metabolite’s conformation was found to be similar in the different corresponding studied environments and its interaction with micelles was shown to be more effective compared to that of the parental molecule.

Το losartan αποτελεί ένα νέας γενεάς αντιϋπερτασικό μόριο το οποίο ανταγωνίζεται την υπερτασική δράση της πεπτιδορμόνης Αγγειοτασίνης ΙΙ στον ΑΤ1 υποδοχέα. Για την κατανόηση του μηχανισμού δράσης του σε μοριακό επίπεδο το πρώτο στάδιο περιλαμβάνει τη γνώση των διαμορφωτικών ιδιοτήτων. Αυτό επιτεύχθηκε με χρήση συνδυασμού φασματοσκοπίας Πυρηνικού Μαγνητικού Συντονισμού και Υπολογιστικής Χημείας. Η διαμόρφωση του αντιϋπερτασικού φαρμακευτικού προϊόντος έγινε σε διαφορετικά περιβάλλοντα προς κατανόηση του ρόλου τους στις φυσικοχημικές του ιδιότητες. Τα αποτελέσματα έδειξαν ότι το περιβάλλον είναι καθοριστικό μόνο στη διαμόρφωση της αλκυλικής αλυσίδας. Είναι γνωστό ότι το losartan δρα σε διαμεμβρανικό επίπεδο. Για το λόγο αυτό χρησιμοποιήθηκαν επισημασμένα αντιδραστήρια για την εξεύρεση της τοπογραφίας του σε μικκυλιακό περιβάλλον το οποίο προσομοιάζει αυτό των λιποειδών διπλοστιβάδων. Τα αποτελέσματα έδειξαν ότι το losartan εντοπίζεται στο ενδιάμεσης πολικότητας τμήμα των μικκυλίων ώστε να βελτιστοποιήσει τις αμφοτερικές αλληλεπιδράσεις. Παρόμοια πειράματα διεξήχθησαν με το δραστικό μεταβολίτη EXP-3174. Ο μεταβολίτης έχει σχεδόν πανομοιότυπη διαμόρφωση στα διάφορα περιβάλλοντα που μελετήθηκε και εξασκεί δραστικότερη αλληλεπίδραση στο μικκύλια.
