▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Central African country of Malawi has a population of over 15 million people and more than 500 Protestant missionaries. In spite of an overall sense of partnership and community among missionaries in Malawi, a significant tension exists between the approaches that various Protestant missionaries have taken in their attempt fulfil The Great Commission of Matthew 28. This tension is not limited to Malawi. Missiologists worldwide have identified several different models of mission work. Some of these models emphasize the verbal proclamation of the gospel message while other models emphasize social action and acts of mercy as an equal or primary focus. The purpose of this dissertation is to determine what the dominant models of mission work in Malawi are in practice. Is the emphasis more on gospel proclamation or social action and how does that relate to the commission in Matthew 28? In order to determine this, the researcher 1) investigates the growing tension between various models of missionary work, 2) analyzes various Protestant missionary models as they relate to key passages of Scripture, 3) examines qualitative theological perspectives surrounding the issue of evangelism, social action, Matthew 25, and Matthew 28, 4) conducts empirical quantitative research among missionaries currently serving in Malawi, 5) conducts empirical qualitative research among Christians in the West that have an interest in Malawi’s missionary work, 6) explores normative perceptions of the traditional prioritism model of missionary work, 7) develops a revised praxis for churches in the West that send missionaries to help them become more effective in developing their models of mission. Traditionally, missionaries have focused on gospel proclamation and social action has been a secondary, but important, emphasis. Today, some missionaries elevate social action as a co-priority with proclamation while others practice social action almost exclusively. Many missionaries in Malawi are so focused on social action activities like medicine, general education, and orphan care that they have little time to devote to Bible teaching, baptism, and church strengthening. Christians in the West who have an interest in missionary work in Malawi are naturally concerned about both gospel proclamation and social action. They desire that the physical needs of Malawians would not be neglected, but they also desire that the gospel message would be proclaimed in Malawi and that missionaries would make disciples by teaching all that Christ has commanded. This is why a research project that involves a theological study in relation to an analysis of the praxis of religious workers in Malawi will be useful. It should help both Christians in the West and missionaries in Malawi to maintain priorities that will sustain both gospel proclamation as well as social action in a needy country like Malawi. ▼ Writings by 16th to 18th century Lutheran missionaries on the indigenous Sámi peoples of northern Scandinavia show a strong tendency to characterize all aspects of traditional Sámi spirituality as demonic “superstition” that posed a real, existential threat to the kingdoms of Denmark-Norway and Sweden’s status as Lutheran Christian kingdoms following the Reformation. These beliefs and practices, in their view, therefore needed to be stamped out. This dissertations views the theological rhetoric of these missionary works through the lens of “superstition” (i.e. illicit religion) vs. “religion” (i.e. licit religion) as elucidated by Patristic authors such as Tertullian and Augustine, as well as the more recent theoretical model of “syncretism” (i.e. religion blendings) vs. “anti-syncretism” (i.e. the backlash against religious blendings) from scholars such as Meyer and van der Leeuw. I argue that indigenous spirituality served as a canvas upon which these Lutheran missionaries cast many of their own theological uncertainties regarding the fight against illicit religion which had begun centuries earlier with the Lutheran Reformation. Chapter 1 provides an overview of relevant research on historical missionary contact with the Sámi and a summary of important scholarship on the Western study of indigenous spirituality in general. Chapter 2 focuses on the most salient Lutheran missionary authors of this period. It situates these authors’ works within their historical contexts, and presents the writers’ depictions of Sámi spirituality. Chapter 3 outlines the methodological considerations of both of the theoretical frameworks used in this dissertation to analyze missionary sources on Sámi spirituality. Chapter 4 uses the theoretical frameworks as outlined in the previous chapter to analyze the relevant missionary works. By doing this, it shows that almost all of these missionary writers categorized indigenous Sámi spirituality as “superstition” and strongly condemned any perceived syncretistic blendings. Chapter 5 is a comparative analysis of German Lutheran missionaries in Papua New Guinea in the 20th century. This chapter provides a similar analysis of a Lutheran mission in a different part of the world and in a different time that bears strong similarities to the Scandinavian Lutheran missions to the Sámi. This dissertation uses these models of “superstition” vs. “religion” and “syncretism” vs. “anti-syncretism” to track how missionary portrayals of Sámi spirituality and the conversion process changed throughout the course of missionary activity, thereby showing how changing theological attitudes over from the 17th through the 20th century affected missionary attitudes. ▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Since receiving its independence in 1960, Nigeria has struggled to unite its many people, ethnic and religious groups under one national identity. In recent decades, religiously motivated encounters between Christians and Muslims have gained a new social and political presence and significance in the Northern Nigerian region. The impact of this kind of religiously motivated conflict has provided fresh stimulus and focus for the need to engage in inter-religious dialogue and to critically analyse the immediate problem(s). The consequences and outcomes of these encounters are reflected in the rate of killings, maiming and wanton destruction of lives and property over the years, therefore violating human rights and dignity, which come from God and are rooted in the concept of the Imago Dei. Against this background, the call to do mission as prophetic dialogue in Christian-Muslim encounters is an important attempt to address these problem(s). Arguing for the use of prophetic dialogue suggests that our limited understanding be acknowledged and that we live open to learning more about God and the activity of God’s Spirit in the world. The researcher maintains that prophetic dialogue is part of our very witness to listen, to learn, to boldly yet humbly share, as well as to explore faith in a spirit of mutuality with believers of other religions in a conflict situation, such as the case of Christian-Muslim religious encounters in Northern Nigeria. As this was qualitative and interpretive research, the researcher argues conceptually for the use of Kritzinger’s (2008) seven-praxis cycle to enable mission as prophetic dialogue in and through the documents of the Programme for Christian-Muslim Relations in Africa (PROCMURA) and in order to address the challenges of inter-religious encounters and coexistence between Christians and Muslims in Northern Nigeria. Hence “thoughtfulness,” “theoretical interpretation” and “wise judgement” are required (Osmer, 2008:83), and Osmer’s hermeneutic therefore is closely followed throughout the dissertation as a guide for the research, which follows the four tasks of Osmer’s (2008:4) hermeneutical spiral. In theory, Osmer calls these models four tasks: ‘descriptive-empirical’, ‘interpretive’, ‘normative’, and ‘pragmatic’ tasks. The researcher argues that inter-religious conflict not only brings political and economic instability, but also impacts on the social and cultural life of a country’s citizens. Therefore, the study established that religiously motivated conflicts have also threatened the Nigerian economy, rule of law, fundamental human rights and dignity. As a result, the researcher introduces the equation of encounter, tolerating “others” in humility, building the concept of religious trust, and takes to task the religious communities and scholars of religion to do more in the area of addressing the value of human lives, as well as to carry out further studies on inter-religious relations in Northern Nigeria. ▼ ABSTRACT ASSISTING CHINESE HOUSE CHURCHES TO BECOME GREAT COMMISSION CHURCHES Name Withheld, Ph.D. The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2012 Chairperson: Dr. George H. Martin The purpose of this dissertation is to provide a training proposal that will assist the Chinese house churches in developing a plan to address their missiological weaknesses and become Great Commission churches. The thesis of this dissertation is that the majority of Chinese house churches are not Great Commission churches. Chapter 1 will give an overview of the project, which includes the methodology used. Chapter 2 describes the origin of the house church in China, with special attention being given to the historical and political factors that shaped it. With this background information in place, the reader will be better able to understand the modern day situation of the Chinese house church. Chapter 3 will provide a rationale for the Great Commission survey that was used to collect data. First, a biblical theology of missions will be developed. From this theology, the ten criteria of a Great Commission church will be established. Finally, these ten criteria will inform the twenty-nine question survey that will be used to obtain measurable data. Chapter 4 will describe the data collected by the questionnaire. The twenty-nine questions will be grouped according to their corresponding Great Commission church criterion. The data will be immediately assessed to form a preliminary conclusion regarding the nature of the majority of Chinese house churches regarding their Great Commission involvement. Chapter 5 will use published materials to describe the recent missionary efforts of the house church in China, with special attention being given to the Back to Jerusalem Movement (BTJ). This chapter will also depend upon various interviews that the author has conducted to supplement the scarcity of resources in this sensitive area. The goal is to verify or modify the conclusions reached in chapter 4. The chapter will finish by listing the missiological weaknesses of the modern-day Chinese house church. Finally, chapter 6 is a contextualized training proposal designed to assist Chinese house churches to become Great Commission churches. The training will lead church leaders to develop a plan for their local church that will strengthen its missiology and enable it to more effectively participate in the Great Commission. ▼ Praca przedstawia udział Wojska Polskiego w zagranicznych misjach wojskowych. Obejmuje okres od 1953 roku do roku 2008. Przedstawia ewolucje udziału wojska polskiego w operacjach pokojowych. Omawia również samo zagadnienie operacji pokojowych ich rodzaje i typy (misje pokojowe pod patronatem ONZ, misje stabilizacyjne i misje przywracania pokoju). Jednocześnie przedstawia zasady działania wojska w czasie operacji zagranicznych prowadzonych przez różne organizacje międzynarodowe (ONZ, NATO i UE). W pierwszej części pracy dokonano przedstawienia udziału wojska polskiego w misjach zagranicznych w latach 1953 – 1991. Były to przede wszystkim misje pod patronatem ONZ. Ich celem były pokojowe działania mające zapewnić bezpieczeństwo na terenach objętych wcześniej działaniami wojennymi. Tak było w przypadku misji w: Korei, Wietnamie, Laosie, Kambodży, Egipcie, Syrii. Przedstawiono również zasady funkcjonowania wojska na misjach, jego podstawowe cele i podejmowane działania. Zwrócono uwagę na specyfikę tych misji wynikającą z przynależności Polski do obozu socjalistycznego. Kolejny rozdział pracy przedstawia udział wojska polskiego w misjach zagranicznych w latach 1991 – 2008. Przedstawiono zmianę charakteru działania wojska w czasie misji zagranicznych. Przede wszystkim skupiono się na przełomowych działaniach wojska polskiego w Iraku, Czadzie i Afganistanie. Opisano też udział w działaniach na terenie byłej Jugosławii. Misje te były przełomowymi dla wejścia Polski do NATO. Misje w Iraku, Czadzie i Afganistanie były operacjami, nowego typu. Po raz pierwszy wojsko brało w nich udział w działaniach bojowych, prowadząc działania militarne typowe dla operacji wojennych. Kolejny rozdział opisuje charakterystykę misji w latach 1991 – 2008. Zmiany jakie zaszły w działaniach wojska, zmiany w wyposażeniu żołnierzy i w taktyce działania. Szczególnie dokładnie zajęto się misjami w Iraku, Czadzie i Afganistanie. Były to misje w czasie których wojsko wykazało się wyjątkową sprawnością działania, współpracując z sojusznikami z NATO. Ważnym wydarzeniem związanym z udziałem w misjach w Iraku i Afganistanie było powierzenie Wojsku Polskiemu stref odpowiedzialności w których Polacy prowadzili samodzielne działania zarówno militarne jak i te mające pomóc miejscowej ludności. Polacy w ramach CIMIC (Civil Military Cooperation), pomagali odbudowywać Iraki i Afganistan. Wojsko Polskie w czasie misji zagranicznych prowadziło też działania zbrojne walcząc z terrorystami. Prowadzili działania mające na celu stabilizację w krajach dotkniętych wojną i krajach w których działali terroryści. Działania w ramach koalicji anty terrorystycznej stały się w XXI wieku podstawą zagranicznych misji Wojska Polskiego. Ostatni rozdział pracy poświęcony został głównie analizie skutków misji zagranicznych w latach 1991 – 2008. Skutków politycznych ekonomicznych i wojskowych. ▼ The research in this dissertation reveals that Nepali refugees in Louisville have developed several identities that sometimes overlap and contradict one another when one tries to classify this population into distinct units or ethnic groups. Self-identity is important for evangelical mission strategists because evangelical mission strategy is dominated by a desire to reach “people groups” and diaspora peoples are not easily broken up into distinct people groups. Chapter 1 presents the research questions and methodologies. The research questions are, 1. Diaspora peoples cannot be placed into distinct groups without seriously distorting reality. What does this mean when trying to reach diaspora peoples in North America? 2. How do diaspora people draw boundaries between their group and the “others”? Do they draw boundaries? The research methodology includes a literature review, semi-structured interviews, narrative research, grounded theory, participant observation, and the data was analyzed producing two case studies. Chapter 2 provides a framework for relating findings of this dissertation within this field of study. It summarizes and analyzes the relevant literature from the fields of missiology and cultural anthropology especially as it concerns diaspora and ethnic identity. The literature review comes from secular and evangelical sources. Chapter 3 concentrates on the refugee community from Burma in Louisville. It includes a history of the community describing where the refugees came from and how they arrived in Louisville, including biographical studies from different ethnic perspectives. The biographical studies demonstrate different viewpoints from people within this group. The case study identifies the way this group categorizes themselves and draw boundaries defining the “other.” Chapter 4 addresses the complexity of the refugee community from Nepal, including a history of the community describing where they came from and how they arrived in Louisville. Like chapter 3, it includes biographical studies from different perspectives within the community. Chapter 4 concludes with how Nepali-speaking refugees from Bhutan identify and categorize themselves and place boundaries between themselves and other groups. The last two chapters conclude with research implications and the conclusion. The distinct boundaries between people groups are eroded by diaspora peoples moving to urban areas in North America. In missiologists desire to reach people groups they often place diaspora peoples into distinct categories of ethnic groups where they do not exist in reality. The theory that diaspora peoples have fluid identities as described by anti-anti-essentialists such as Douglass, Friedman, and others puts a major wrinkle in the idea that diaspora peoples can be fit into distinct categories. This dissertation a presents a new methodology for missiologists studying ethnic groups and planting homogenous churches among diaspora populations in North America based on fuzzy set theory. Walters Pre-field assessment and development are proven tools to help missionary candidates better prepare for life and ministry overseas. There is no better place to do this assessment and development than in the context of the local church. Chapter 1 lays the framework for the rest of the dissertation by providing an apologetic to the centrality of the local church and giving a basic overview of what will be covered in the dissertation. Chapter 1 then provide definitions to key concepts, addresses limitation and delimitations, and then lays out the methodology of research. Chapter 2 provides a biblical and historical basis for the sentness of God and the sentness of the local church. This Trinitarian sending shows that God the Father sent the Son, the Father and Son sent the Spirit, and the Triune God sends the church out on a mission of redemption. Chapter 2 goes on to show the sentness of the local church as displayed throughout history from Acts 2 through the current Sending Church Movement. This theological understanding of the mission Dei, the mission of God, is essential to understanding and valuing the local church’s role in global missions, specifically assessment and development. Chapter 3 starts by answering the question of why the local church matters in the assessment and development of pre-field missionaries. The chapter then discuss the results of a twelve-question interview given to nine known and respected sending churches in North America. The results of these interviews were analyzed, discussed, and observations are made. Finally, the chapter discussed best practices of assessment and development seen in the churches interviewed. Chapter 4 considers the findings of chapter 3, as well as the current literature available on missionary assessment and development, and then proposes a model of assessment and development that can be used by leaders in local churches. This proposed model includes the methodology, processes, tools, and best practices needed for assessing and developing prospective missionaries within the local church. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A congregation that wants to be faithful to a sending God, has to continually remind itself: “we are here now;” congregations need to converse with the unique identity, culture, context and time of where they are at. A Missional culture can only be established within a congregation if a prophetic sensitivity for God’s calling and sending is present. In this ethnographic account of the Dutch Reformed Church PUK-Kandelaar, the history, context and culture of the congregation is researched and explored. The aim of the study is to indicate where Kandelaar currently finds itself on the missional journey by bringing her unique realities of ministry and context into conversation with a Trinitarian missional ecclesiology. Following an introductory discussion of the research in terms of motivation, aim and methodology, a basis-theoretical overview of missional ecclesiology is given. Next, the congregational history is narrated, followed by a comprehensive ethnographic description of the congregation in her current context. Finally, an in-depth missional conversation is conducted between the congregation’s ministerial practice and God’s missional calling. The relation between the ministerial realities of Kandelaar as a categorical student congregation and the pursuit of a missional ministry practice is developed comprehensively, specifically by focusing on discernment as a core issue for missional leaders. The study indicates several unique ministerial realities for which Kandelaar, as a categorical student congregation, has to allow for, and thus provides the leadership of the congregation with a platform for further faithful discernment on the missional journey with the Triune God.

▼ This study examined the relationship between the short-term mission trip experience and participation in spiritual-formation disciplines for individuals identifying with mainline protestant Christian traditions. The study was causal comparative and primarily concerned with comparing the independent variable of a short-term mission trip experience with several dependent variables. These variables included participation in prayer, service, worship, study, giving, and witness related disciplines as well as the integration of faith into everyday life. The primary research question asked whether there was a significant relationship between a short-term mission trip experience and self-reported participation in Christian spiritual-formation disciplines. Participants included individuals ranging in ages from 13 through 24, who identified as being engaged with either the Baptist, Methodist, or Presbyterian traditions. Participants were part of the National Study of Youth and Religion (NSYR) and were surveyed three distinct times over a six-year period. Due to the longitudinal nature of the NSYR, it was possible to identify a short-term mission trip as a treatment. This treatment allowed for the comparison of survey responses, both before and after a responder reported participating in a short-term mission trip experience. It was also possible to compare responses between peer groups: those who reported mission experience and those who did not. After analyzing survey responses for seven distinct comparison groups across three survey waves, the study showed little to no evidence of a significant difference in the levels of participation in spiritual-formation disciplines following engagement in a short-term mission trip experience. Results did demonstrate a theme of declined participation in spiritual disciplines for individuals who did not participate in a short-term mission trip experience. Results also suggested differences in participation levels for those experiencing a short-term mission versus those who did not, during the timeframes before and after the experience. However, on the whole, for individuals reporting a short-term mission trip experience, participation levels neither increased nor decreased following the experience. The results of this study suggest a continued need for the research based conversation concerning the short-term mission trip, including its value as an instructional intervention for spiritual-formation. ▼ The phenomenal growth of the Chinese Church today despite many decades of persecution is a subject that merits in-depth study and analyses. This growth was not accidental but the fruit of the hard labor and effective strategies of the missionaries in the 19th and 20th centuries. The China Inland Mission (CIM) was the largest mission organization in China at the time and is the subject of this study. As CIM headquarters were based in Shanghai, fewer records have survived compared with other missionary societies whose offices were located within the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA). Fortunately, a number of CIM missionaries left written records of some detail in their stories and reports. Among these writers, Leslie Lyall was one of the most outstanding. He wrote extensively on the history of the CIM and the Overseas Missionary Fellowship (OMF) especially in the period from 1930-1980. Lyall was also an active participant in the building of the Chinese Church. Researchers often treated the vision of the CIM as if it were static in nature, but the truth is, both the vision and the strategy of the CIM evolved materially from the early days of Hudson Taylor. These changes were instrumental to the growth and eventual survival of the Chinese Church. From Lyall’s reports, we can trace at least four significant changes in strategy from 1920 to 1990. When Taylor was at the helm, the focus of the CIM was purely evangelism. D.E. Hoste, Taylor’s successor, took the organization in a different direction. He determined instead to prioritize the building up of an indigenous Chinese Church. In order to achieve this goal, he did two things. First, he implemented a policy of establishing self-supporting, self-propagating and self-governing local churches. Second, he recruited 200 new missionaries who were more educated and better equipped to train local leaders than those who had gone before. Lyall, a Cambridge graduate, was one of these 200 new recruits. Along with the building of the indigenous Chinese Church, the CIM began to alter her role from that of leader to partner. There were three means of collaboration through the strategies of mentorship, partnership and trusteeship. The third change came about with the extension of CIM’s ministry to the intellectuals. During the war against Japan, the CIM saw the needs of the Chinese university students who struggled in the undeveloped regions of western China to which they had been relocated. The CIM extended her ministry to this group of intellectuals. Christianity spread rapidly among these students and professors within a short time. Lyall was one of the main players in this movement. Finally, Lyall was also a key architect in the transition from the CIM of old China to the OMF of new China. After 1951, the CIM expanded her vision to East Asia. ▼ Les Nanaïs sont une des populations autochtones de la région de l’Amour, que l’on retrouve de part et d’autre de la frontière avec la Chine. En Chine, ils sont appelés Hezhe. Dès l’incursion mandchoue dans la partie la plus au Nord de cette région, suivie par les différentes tentatives de colonisation russe, les Nanaïs ont adapté leur mode de vie, leur culture et leur religion au gré des changements économiques, géopolitiques et sociaux de la région de l’Amour. De part et d’autre de la frontière, sujet politique, objet de recherche, soumise à la russification depuis la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle et à la sinisation avant cela, « l’identité » culturelle fragmentée et plurielle des Nanaïs est le reflet de ces différents enjeux. Dans cette thèse de doctorat en anthropologie, je propose d’analyser les différents modes d’expressions « d’identité » employés par les Nanaïs ou les Hezhe afin d’étudier comment sont abordées les ruptures ou les continuités apportées par l’histoire récente de la région à une culture pensée comme traditionnelle. En Russie, jusque dans les années 1970, les Nanaïs possédaient un système religieux chamanique dans lequel les âmes des vivants et des morts étaient gérées par des chamanes et par un système de rites complexes. Depuis la fin des années 1990, suite aux années soviétiques, les chamanes ont disparu. Avec leur disparition, la russification du mode de vie et la présence de missionnaires orthodoxes et protestants, les pratiques religieuses des Nanaïs s’inscrivent aujourd’hui dans la pluralité. Celle-ci peut être perçue dans les stratégies d’adaptations rituelles mises en place pour pallier l’absence de chamane, dans la promotion d’une culture artistique pensée comme essentiellement « nanaïe » et dans les conversions aux différentes formes de christianisme. Se pose alors la question de la perception (émique ou non) de « l’identité » des Nanaïs. Cette thèse est divisée en trois parties. La première traite des transformations apportées aux rites funéraires nanaïs et leurs limites, perceptibles dans la présence d’âmes et d’esprits néfastes. La deuxième partie aborde la place des broderies dans la conception d’une « identité » nanaïe ou hezhe visible, mise en place pour la « sauvegarde » des pratiques dites autochtones. La troisième partie s’intéresse aux conversions aux christianismes présents dans la région pour montrer deux façons de devenir chrétien, oscillant entre la continuité historique et la rupture systémique. Les interactions religieuses et culturelles donnent lieu à diverses formes de réappropriations autochtones qui assurent la continuité des représentations chamaniques. La transformation des pratiques entraine également la perception émique d’une « perte » de culture. La question de la perception des ruptures ou continuités en regard d’une culture pensée comme traditionnelle se situe dans l’analyse de ces pratiques plurielles. ▼ In a little over 100 years, the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Brazil has grown to a membership of 1,447,470 (December 2013), becoming the country with the second highest total number of Adventists in the world. Very little academic research has been done to study or analyze the growth and development of the Adventist church in Brazil. In terms of its mission methods, what is the Christian movement ethos that fostered this development in Brazil? How can it continue to foster Adventist church growth in Brazil in spite of contextual changes? As a missiological study that reflects typical interdisciplinarity crossing traditional boundaries of academic disciplines to borrow methods and insights and apply them toward a better understanding of a specific problem, this study employs Gailyn van Rheenen’s Missional Helix and intertwines theological reflection, cultural analysis, historical perspective, and strategy formation within the context of the practice of ministry. The first part of this research is a biblico-historical overview of the character of Christian movements followed by a socio-religious systematization of the ethos of Christian movements. The third part focuses on the ethos of the Adventist movement in Brazil including a description and analysis of its mission methods. The present study analyzes five major mission methods used by the Adventist Church in Brazil from 1895 to 2007 based on the characteristics of an Adventist missionary movement ethos in order draw lessons to face the contemporary contextual challenges. A brief analysis of the Adventist movement in Brazil, according to the proposed ethos model (confession of Jesus as Savior, Lord, and Priest; a missional-incarnational impulse of the soon coming of Jesus; an apostolic movement as part of the Great Controversy; communitas as a reflection of the will of God for relationships as described in God’s commandments; organic systems according to spiritual gifts; and disciple making in preparation for eternity), suggests specific findings. Clearly, the Adventist Church has grown and developed as it has relied on different mission methods (literature evangelism, public evangelism, radio and TV evangelism, metropolitan evangelism, and integrated evangelism). And, even after discounting some of the obviously triumphalist enthusiasm found in the church leaders’ reports and official sources of information, one is able to identify signs of a movement motivated by its mission. In many ways, the overall lesson of this analysis is the importance of fostering mission as a way of living that is at the core of an Adventist movement and developing methods based on a biblical understanding of Christianity that will develop movements with a missionary ethos. In spite of the somewhat positive analysis of the Adventist movement ethos in Brazil, it is clear that there is much room for improvement in each area. Avec l’avènement du règne personnel du Roi soleil et sa volonté de contrôle sur l’ensemble de son royaume en 1661, de nombreux changements sont apparus dans la relation entre la Martinique et la métropole, avec un renforcement des dépendances et inégalités. La première des volontés du roi porta sur l’affirmation de sa majesté. Il enleva le statut seigneurial particulier de la Martinique afin d’intégrer l’île dans le Royaume. L’autre aspect de sa politique, avec l’ambitieux Colbert fut de réformer la dépendance économique, des productions agricoles afin de répondre aux besoins et ambitions “mercantiles” de la France en prônant à nouveau l’exclusif.Les transferts de populations connurent un accroissement considérable. Le plus connu est celui issu des Traites, il est important de distinguer d’autres plus particuliers comme les engagés blancs ou encore les pensionnaires des hôpitaux et les exils. La société coloniale était divisée alors en trois grandes catégories : les blancs, les libres et les serviles, mais les strates étaient bien plus complexes.Le ministère de l’Église fut chargé de maintenir les populations dans l’obéissance à la royauté en leur rappelant leur statut de sujets. Il fut chargé de convertir les esclaves, amérindiens, réformés mais aussi les Juifs présents dans la colonie, afin de les consacrer à une forme de maxime : un roi, une religion.Mais les volontés d’assujettissement des populations créèrent de nombreuses réactions qui furent l’interlope, les révoltes blanches et serviles, le marronnage ou encore la persistance des « réfractaires » religieux.

With the advent of the personal reign of the Sun King and his desire to control his entire kingdom in 1661, many changes have occurred in the relationship between Martinique and metropolitan France, with stronger dependency and inequality. The first of the will of the king fell on the affirmation of his majesty. He removed the particular lordly status of Martinique to integrate the island into the Kingdom. The other aspect of his policy, with the ambitious Colbert was to reform the economic dependence of agricultural production to meet the needs and aspirations "mercantile" in France advocating again exclusive.Population transfers experienced a significant increase . The best known is based on the Treaties, it is important to distinguish it from other more specific as white or residents of hospitals and exiles incurred. Colonial society was divided then into three broad categories: white , free and servile , but the layers are much more complex. The ministry of the Church was responsible for maintaining populations in obedience to royalty reminding them of their status as subjects. The Church was responsible for converting the slaves, Native Americans , but also reformed Jews in the colony , in order to focus on a form of maxim : one king, one religion.But the will of subjugation of populations created many reactions that were the underworld , white and servile revolts, runaways or the persistence of "refractory" religious.
