Subjects/Keywords: Social Perceptions; International Students Persons with DisabilitiesAbstract This research project measured the social perceptions of international students from Saint Cloud State University; (SCSU); a regional comprehensive university in the Midwest; as well as; non-international participants about persons with disabilities. Participants completed the four-hour “Embracing the Difference: The ABILITY Event” held by the Rehabilitation Counseling Graduate Department at SCSU. The researcher used a pre and post-survey to determine the perceptions students and community members hold towards people with disabilities. The primary goal of this project was to evaluate if social perceptions changed by the international students; and in what areas. Areas assessed were work; relationships; and general communication. International participant responses were compared to those of the domestic participants. The “Embracing the Difference: The ABILITY Event” had two main components: 1) Experiential Learning Scenarios (ELS) which are hands on experiences facilitated by person(s) who live with the specific physical; emotional and/or mental inconveniences; and vendors in the field of disability; and 2) a Post-ELS "Panel; " lead by ELS facilitators. It was hypothesized that international students would show an increase in all areas of the post surveys. Furthermore; it was hypothesized that all participants would show an increase in their social perceptions of persons with physical; emotional and mental inconveniences. While not all areas of the post-survey were statistically significant; overall participants perceptions changed from a stereotypical stigma to a more positive view after participating in the "Embracing the Difference: The ABILITY event!"

Treatment for dual diagnosis is best when the treatment of each disorder is integrated into one program. There are various forms of dual diagnosis treatment that were explored. Existing dual diagnosis treatment research will be presented. The purpose of the study is to evaluate an existing dual diagnosis and severe mental illness program that provides integrated mental health and substance abuse treatment. The research design is a pre-experimental one group pretest posttest design (Campbell & Stanley, 1963). Fifty-two people were studied to determine the program effectiveness. The effectiveness of the program was determined by analyzing the data collected on the consumers’ pretest and posttest measures. The measures used in the research were the BASIS-32, MAI, BHS, BDI, and CAR. Subjects in the study had a mean age of 30. There were 18 females and 34 males. Of the participants, 11.3% had schizophrenia, 13.2% had schizoaffective disorder, 7.5% had bipolar, 11.3% had depression, 5.7% had substance abuse, 43.4% had a dual diagnosis with mental illness and substance abuse, and 5.7% had schizotypal personality disorder. The average length of stay for the consumers was 4 months of treatment. All clients were prescribed medications at discharge with the exception of one client. The results of the study indicate that the BASIS-32 showed statistically significant improvement in results for subjects from pretest to posttest. All other inventories yielded changes that were not statistically significant. Treating dually diagnosed clients in an integrated treatment center is imperative to decrease duplication of services, mixed messages, and exacerbation of problems. In this study, the dual diagnosis program was seen to have some efficacy in treatment. Limitations of the study include a low N, which affects the power of the study to determine statistically significant changes in client inventory scores from pretest to posttest. Other limitations include no comparison group nor any control group. Despite the limitations, the study demonstrates that people improve while in dual diagnosis treatment, even those clients with a single diagnosis.","Kevin DeWeaver","Kevin DeWeaver; Patricia Reeves; Edwin Risler",PhD,Sociology,"Social Work",arnold_tara_g_200305_phd,http://purl.galileo.usg.edu/uga_etd/arnold_tara_g_200305_phd,eng,uga,public,"Dual diagnosis; Treatment; SMI; Research; Substance Abuse; BASIS-32; MAI; BHS; CAR; BDI-II.",,"Evaluation of an innovative dual diagnosis program : Skyland Trail's Operation Prevention (STOP).",Dissertation +,10724/20051,"Aten, Nancy Marie",2003-05,"Ecological landscape rehabilitation is explored in cities, especially the significance of scale, and the sense of place that is encouraged through the use of an indigenous vegetation model. The natural landscape and natural processes in cities have been modified beyond recognition, simplified, and obscured; however, the dependence of people on those processes and resources remains in a critical, tenuous, and not completely understood balance. In process-based ecological restoration, considerations of scale are related to ecosystem spatial characteristics and potential connectivity of restored patches. In cities, with unbuilt ground in very small fragments, the idea of a whole ecological landscape integrated with dense human population encourages consideration of larger scale rehabilitation. A process of ecological rehabilitation at a neighborhood scale is suggested, toward “success” in ecological and social terms, by considering case study neighborhoods in central city Milwaukee, their characteristics relevant to landscape rehabilitation, and oak savanna as a vegetation model.","Darrel Morrison","Darrel Morrison; Ian Firth; Kathleen Parker; Susan Mudd",MLA,"College of Environment and Design","Landscape Architecture",aten_nancy_m_200305_mla,http://purl.galileo.usg.edu/uga_etd/aten_nancy_m_200305_mla,eng,uga,public,"Urban Ecology; Oak Savanna; Ecological Restoration; Landscape Scale; Milwaukee",,"City neighborhood and Oak Savanna",Thesis +,10724/20051,"Austin, Rebecca Lynne",2003-05,"Transnational environmentalism has traditionally been considered an environmentalism that emphasizes the conservation of "nature," not social justice and the empowerment of local peoples. On Palawan Island, Philippines, the linkages between meso-level environmental Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and local fisherfolk are the primary foundation for social justice, food security, and the empowerment of local peoples through community-based coastal resources management (CBCRM). This suggests that these linkages are the basis for CBCRM, which focuses more on social justice, and less on scientific, technocratic, or preservationist approaches to resource management. Since the People Power movement and the new Philippine Constitution of 1987 the democratic space in the Philippines became especially conducive to communitybased resource management. My research is significant because it fills several gaps in the literature on environmentalism. First, the relationship between meso-level NGOs and local communities is rarely addressed in analyses of environmental movements, which are usually focused primarily on either transnational discourses or local case studies. Second, most contemporary environmental movements have focused more on the conservation of nature, and not on social justice and the empowerment of local peoples. Third, there is a dearth of literature on coastal environmentalism. Palawan in particular has received international attention for its high biological diversity and is host to a growing number of coastal environmental programs. Recently, environmentalism has begun to emphasize the conservation and regeneration of the world’s oceans and coastal zones. Utilizing tools and perspectives from cultural anthropology and other disciplines, this research analyzes the linkages between NGOs and local peoples. Unlike projections made by early critiques of NGOs, many Palawan environmental advocacy NGOs started as volunteer organizations, and with the infusion of donor funding have not “sold out” advocacy to become project mangers. On Palawan, hybrid NGOs have maintained advocacy positions and activities while taking on project management roles. The research suggests that fisherfolk become empowered through relationships with and information learned from NGOs along with government agencies, and will likely maintain those relationships for effective resource management as opposed to an ideal held by NGO environmentalists for autonomous self-determination.","J. The radial maze was placed in a featureless octagonal enclosure to minimize the availability of extramaze cues. Intramaze cues were provided at the distal end of each arm by placing a small object in front of the food trough; unique objects were randomly sampled from a large pool of objects. The use of extramaze and intramaze cues was assessed by rotating the objects, after the retention interval, on occasional non-rewarded probes, thereby dissociating the location of extramaze and intramaze cues. Most of the debate surrounding transcendental arguments has centered on their failure to accomplish what their advocates intend them to accomplish. They are typically called upon to settle decisively the philosophical difficulties they address by establishing necessary metaphysical claims through a consideration of the conditions of the possibility of epistemological premises. That is, transcendental arguments make a claim about reality, what is actually the case, based upon appearance, what is believed to be the case or how things seem. In Chapters One and Two, I will give an account of the chief characteristics and structure of transcendental arguments and provide several canonical exemplars, which will exhibit not only different manifestations that transcendental arguments can take but also the issues they have been used to address. The most common criticism of transcendental arguments is that they are not able to span the justificatory gap between appearance and reality or to accomplish the seemingly impossible task of moving from mind to world. In Chapter Three, I will consider criticisms of transcendental arguments, focusing on the most common criticism given by Barry Stroud. In light of Stroud’s trenchant criticism, recent work reveals an optimistic undertone by some philosophers who would promote a more moderate use of transcendental arguments. Rather than establish necessary claims about reality, transcendental arguments reveal necessary epistemological connections. I will argue that although these moderate versions are indeed legitimate as transcendental arguments, there is no need to discard the more ambitious version. Through the work of John McDowell, I will show how Stroud’s criticism can be overcome, thereby removing the incentive to endorse moderate versions as substitutes for ambitious versions and placing renewed confidence in transcendental argumentation. In Chapter Three, I will present and offer a critique of these moderate versions. In Chapters Four, Five, and Six, I will consider McDowell’s work in my defense of transcendental arguments against the criticisms previously noted.","O. Bradley Bassler","O. The study seeks to add to our understanding of the effect that internal organizational characteristics and external environmental factors can have on an organization’s choice to become involved in the policy process through the courts. The study uses a three-part analysis to understand the court-based advocacy of these groups, using three research questions for the study: (1) Over a period of ten years, what factors affect the choice of charitable nonprofit advocacy groups to participate in the courts? (2) What factors explain the annual frequency of the court-based advocacy of charitable nonprofit advocacy groups? (3) Of the charitable nonprofit advocacy groups that choose to participate in the courts, what factors affect the legal strategy choices they make on individual cases? To examine these questions, I collected court involvement data and organizational characteristic data on all charities in the United States that claimed to be involved in advocacy activities and whose annual income exceeded approximately three million dollars. The study finds that when considered from a cumulative perspective, over a period of ten years, internal organizational characteristics, including the presence of dues-paying members, are important in explaining the differences between charities that chose to advocate in court in the 1990s and those that did not. However, when considering court-based advocacy from an annual or case-level perspective, external environmental factors, including the regulatory and political environments, have a greater influence on charities.","Susan Haire; Scott Ainsworth","Susan Haire; Scott Ainsworth; Audrey Haynes; Jeff Brudney; Stefanie Lindquist; Hal Rainey",PhD,"Political Science","Political Science",basinger_nancy_w_200305_phd,http://purl.galileo.usg.edu/uga_etd/basinger_nancy_w_200305_phd,eng,uga,public,"Nonprofit Advocacy; Interest Groups in Court; Charities and Public Policy",,"Charities in court : the advocacy efforts of charitable nonprofit organizations in the judicial venue - when? how? and how much?",Dissertation +,10724/20051,"Bates, Benjamin Roswell",2003-05,"The Arab-Israeli conflict has long been presented as eternal and irresolvable. A rhetorical history argues that the standard narrative can be challenged by considering it a series of rhetorical problems. These rhetorical problems can be reconstructed by drawing on primary sources as well as publicly presented texts. A methodology for doing rhetorical history that draws on Michael Calvin McGee's fragmentation thesis is offered. Four theoretical concepts (the archive, institutional intent, peripheral text, and center text) are articulated. British Colonial Office archives, London Times coverage, and British Parliamentary debates are used to interpret four publicly presented rhetorical acts. In 1915-7, Britain issued the Balfour Declaration and the McMahon-Hussein correspondence. Although these documents are treated as promises in the standard narrative, they are ambiguous declarations. As ambiguous documents, these texts offer opportunities for constitutive readings as well as limiting interpretations. In 1922, the Mandate for Palestine was issued to correct this vagueness. Rather than treating the Mandate as a response to the debate between realist foreign policy and self-determination, Winston Churchill used epideictic rhetoric to foreclose a policy discussion in favor of a vote on Britain's honour. As such, the Mandate did not account for Wilsonian drives in the post-War international sphere. After Arab riots and boycotts highlighted this problem, a commission was appointed to investigate new policy approaches. In the White Paper of 1939, a rhetoric of investigation limited Britain's consideration of possible policies. By extending investigation to the limits of kairos, advocates of partition formulated policy without discussing other potential solutions. At the expiration of the White Paper, Britain withdrew from Palestine. As such, in 1947, the United Nations issued Resolution 181 to divide Palestine into two states. United Nations action was possible only because Britain articulated a rhetoric of failure and an end to Empire. None of these four policies was a panacea; each may have enhanced the problem of Palestine. In the conclusion, lessons from Britain's experience are applied to the current American approach to Palestine. Centering George W. Bush's Rose Garden Speech, and drawing on the Mitchell Commission Report and the Tenet Plan, indicates that consideration of ambiguity, epideictic rhetoric, rhetorics of investigation, and rhetorics of failure should be made when evaluating peace proposals.","Celeste Condit","Celeste Condit; Thomas Lessl; John Murphy; Kevin DeLuca; Loch Johnson",PhD,"Speech Communication","Speech Communication",bates_benjamin_r_200305_phd,http://purl.galileo.usg.edu/uga_etd/bates_benjamin_r_200305_phd,eng,uga,public,"Rhetorical history; Palestine; British Empire; Middle East; Late colonial period; Interwar decolonization",,"A rhetorical history of the British Consitution of Israel, 1917-1948",Dissertation +,10724/20051,"Baugher, Eric Brandon",2003-05,"Conventional historic preservation of military artifacts and sites is typically limited to presenting technological context and/or official military history. Based heavily on Astin’s theory of involvement (1984) and numerous national reports addressing educational excellence, this study examines students’ intensity of involvement and organization expectations as two variables influencing perceived learning in the co-curriculum. A total of 437 sophomores, juniors, and seniors completed an 87- item survey primarily using Likert scales to gather information in three areas: (a) the amount of physical and psychological energy exerted by students on the organization, (b) students’ perceptions of skills and competencies gained due to group membership, and (c) students’ perceptions of organization expectations. Data were analyzed using Pearson’s correlations, regression, one-way ANOVA, and t-tests. Results indicated statistically significant correlations between intensity of involvement and perceived learning, as well as expectations and perceived learning. Regression questions yielded no statistically significant findings, indicating that perceived learning could not be predicted by expectations and involvement variables when combined, nor could intensity of involvement be predicted by expectation and intensity of involvement variables when combined. T-tests run on all variables suggested that three expectation variables – high expectations, consistent and clear feedback, and joined the organization expecting to learn were most important when explaining students’ perceived learning in the co-curriculum. ANOVA tests revealed that presidents and vice presidents of organizations perceived higher levels of learning than did other students in the organization, yet student expectations for learning did not vary based on position in the organization. Implications of research findings were discussed and recommendations for future practice were made, including suggestions such as continued study of non-formal modes as they relate to the co-curriculum, the use of curriculum development models normally used by faculty to develop curricular plans in the co-curriculum, implementation of policies and practices that promote increased student invo lvement, further exploration of the practices of student organization advisors, improved training for student organization advisors, and continued investigation into how the prevalence of hierarchical structures among student organizations impacts learning in the co-curriculum.","Diane L. The basic idea is to place an array into a very large virtual memory region, such that any reference to the array is confined to the region. Only the portion of the ICR corresponding to the array is permissible to access. To learn more about the consequences of jealousy expression, this project proposes and tests four potential cognitive and emotional reactions to another’s jealousy expression. Specifically, general partner uncertainty, relational uncertainty, jealousy-related emotion, and rumination are predicted to arise when one’s close relational partner expresses jealousy. These reactions are examined in relation to relational context (i.e., dating partnership, sibling relationship, and cross-sex friendship) and jealousy expression type (i.e., integrative communication, distributive communication, and negative affect expression). Uncertainty findings revealed that cross-sex friends were more uncertain about the partner and the relationship than either siblings or daters after another expresses jealousy. Siblings experienced greater relational uncertainty than did dating partners when reacting to another’s jealousy expression. In addition, another’s use of negative affect expression was related to greater partner and relational uncertainty compared with another’s use of integrative communication. For jealousy-related emotion, siblings and dating partners experienced stronger jealousy-related emotion compared with cross-sex friends, though jealousyrelated emotion levels did not differ according to jealousy expression type. In terms of rumination, when one’s partner used distributive communication or negative affect expression to communicate jealousy, that individual ruminated more than if integrative communication was used. Rumination levels did not differ according to relational context. In addition, a reaction model of jealousy is presented that specifies the order in which these reactions occur after one’s close partner expresses jealousy. After one’s partner expresses jealousy, that individual first experiences general partner uncertainty, followed by relational uncertainty. Next, the individual ruminates about the jealousy expression and then finally experiences jealousy-related emotion. In this study, the effects of tillage and earthworm activity on SOM and carbon (C) protection were investigated. In the first experiment, the objective was to study the mechanisms by which C is protected under no-tillage (NT) management, using 14C-labeled plant residue. Aggregate-size distribution, total C, and 14C were measured together with different pools of aggregate-associated C and 14C from 21-d laboratory incubations of intact and crushed macro-and microaggregates. The results indicated that (i) more young C (14C) is accumulated in the subsurface soil of conventional tillage (CT) than NT, but this C is not stabilized in the long term, and (ii) short- and long-term stabilization of C is higher in the soil surface layers under NT compared with CT. This C stabilization occurs mainly at the microaggregate level. The objectives of the next set of experiments were to investigate the effects of different earthworm species (Aporrotedea caliginosa and Lumbricus rubellus) on aggregation, aggregate-associated C pools and the formation of stable microaggregates within macroaggregates. Two incubations were set up. The first incubation consisted of soil samples crushed <; 250 µm to break up all macroaggregates with three treatments: (i) control soil; (ii) soil + 13C-labeled residue; and (iii) soil + 13C-labeled residue + earthworms. After 20 days, aggregate size distribution was measured and microaggregates (53-250 µm) were isolated out of the formed macroaggregates (>; 250 µm). A second incubation was conducted to determine protected versus unprotected total C and 13C from 21-day laboratory incubations of intact and crushed macro- and microaggregates. The results indicated that microaggregates are rapidly formed within earthworm casts and showed the direct involvement of earthworms in inducing an important protection of soil C at the microaggregate level. The results also suggested that important interactions between earthworm species take place affecting the incorporation of fresh residue-derived C and the formation of stable microaggregates when fresh residue was placed on the surface.","Paul F. Subjects/Keywords: The purpose of this qualitative action research; case study was to understand literacy practices connected to popular culture of sixth grade students and to explore what happened when a teacher and students integrated students' popular culture interests into an English Language Arts curriculum. Sociocultural theories; constructivism; popular culture theories; and 21st Century literacy theories framed this study. This research represented a single-case action research study of two sixth grade classes. There were a total of 40 students participating in the study; ranging from ages 10 to 11. Data were collected from a variety of sources over an extended period of time in order to help create a complete picture of the impacts of popular culture integrated into language arts curriculum. These sources included: a researcher's journal; student questionnaires and interest surveys; focus group interviews; individual interviews; student work samples; and Hawaiʻi State Assessment data. Upon analysis; nine big ideas emerged from the data. The results showed there to be positive social-emotional classroom environment; one in which students felt empowered and demonstrated critical thinking in all aspects of the formal curriculum. In exploring students' popular culture interests and connections to schooling; there were some differences noted between gender and it was also observed that students faced influences from both parents and peers in their interests and pleasures in popular culture. Finally; the impact on me; the teacher researcher was a transformation of practice and subsequent empowerment.

Subjects/Keywords: EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITY; CUSTOMS UNION; NAIROBI CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT; “The world is a global village” is a common phrase that goes around nowadays. Borders are beginning to become less and less restrictive as countries realize the benefits of less restriction to cross border trade. The European Union has paved a path that countries around the world might follow in the next few years to come. The East African region nations are united in a customs union in a bid to increase the ease of cross border trade between Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The East African Community (EAC) was formed in 2001, revamped after a collapse in 1977. It was officially launched in 2005. Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania resolved to create an enabling environment to attract foreign investors, allow private and civil society to play a leading role in development and to stimulate trade between the three countries. They signed a customs union protocol in March 2004. This paper surveys retail institutions in Nairobi’s Central Business District (NCBD) in a bid to establish the perceptions of traders to the East Africa Community Customs Union and the factors that influence this perception. Chapter 1 of the study provides a brief background on the East African Community, its origins and the formation of the customs union. It also provided an insight into retail trade in Nairobi. The chapter also defines the problem. Chapter 2 builds the theoretical framework of the problem by providing literary works on regional integration, its benefits and flaws; the effect of customs union; and trade within the EAC. Chapter 3 defines the research methodology of the study. The fourth chapter presents the data analysis and findings of the study. The analysis entails primarily quantitative methods of analysis. The findings are then discussed in Chapter 5, which is a summary of findings, conclusions and recommendations.

Proučavane su koroziona postojanost i tendencija lepljenja različitih materijala u kontaktu sa tečnom Al–Si–Cu legurom. Ispitivanjem su obuhvaćeni čelik za rad na toplo, plazma… (more)

Subjects/Keywords: Alat za livenje pod pritiskom, legura aluminijuma, lepljenje livene legure, korozija, habanje, dupleks tretman, topografija površine; Corrosion resistance and soldering tendency of different materials in moltenAl–Si–Cu alloy were studied. Hot-working tool steel, plasma nitrided steel andduplex layers with CrN, TiAlN, TiAlSiN and CrAlN top coatings, which wereproduced to various degree of surface roughness, were covered by the study. An ejection test was employed for investigation of the concerned phenomena. The ejection test was improved in order to increase its accuracy and thereliability of process simulation. Samples were examined in both short andextended periods of contact (5 and 20 min) with liquid casting. Castingsolidification was extended in order to intensify the corrosion effects. Contraryto common findings, it was found that the ejection force of the investigatedmaterials does not depend on their chemical composition. For the coatedsamples, a pronounced dependence of the ejection force on the surfaceroughness was found. The ejection force increases with decrease in surfaceroughness. All investigated coatings are prone to mechanical soldering by Al–Si–Cu alloy. Still, their corrosion resistance substantially exceeds the corrosionresistance of steel and plasma nitrided layer. Longer exposure of coatedsamples to cast alloy induced lower ejection forces, which is a consequenceof coatings oxidation. It was found that the investigated coatings are inert toliquid aluminium. However, the underlying material undergoes oxidation andcorrosion through coating growth defects. The findings concerning the wearmechanisms of protective layers support further development of duplex layersintended for die casting tools protection.

Käibekohustused on inimeste kooseksisteerimise ohutuse tagamiseks kohtupraktika kaudu loodud käitumisreeglid. Erinevaid mõiste määratlusi summeerides võib öelda, et käibekohustus tähendab deliktiõiguses arusaamist, et isikul, kes loob… (more)

Subjects/Keywords: võlaõigus; õigusrikkumised; vastutus; õigusloome; Eesti; law of obligations; violations of law; liability; legislation; Estonia; One expression of defining objective standard of care is the concept of duty to maintain safety, which is based on a legally binding obligation, in the form of a general clause that affects everyone, to conduct himself or herself in a way so as to not harm the legal rights of others, as protected by law, more than necessary and acceptable in the shared life of people. By summarising different definitions, the duty to maintain safety in tort law means the understanding that the person, who creates a danger or controls a dangerous situation and allows the danger to persist, is required to employ all reasonably necessary and appropriate measures in order to protect other persons and their rights against the realisation of danger. As regards the attempts to avoid risks the general assumptions, which apply irrespective of the specific facts of an individual case, three key criteria are especially relevant: the degree of severity of potential damage, likelihood of damage, and the resources needed to prevent or remove the risk. Although liability based on violations of the duties to maintain safety is an organic part of Estonian tort law, it is still quite vague and hidden due to scarcity of case law. It would therefore be worth considering of setting out legal provisions so as to better perceive the possibility of liability based on such a duties. Bunching together general citeria that compose the objective standard of conduct would help to provide such a ground and relevant regulation contained in Articles 4:102 and 4:103 of the PETL may serve as an example. In addition to the clarification of an objective standard of conduct, the current legal provisions constructing the bases of liability based on the general composition of delict should also be specified from the same perspective. Unlike the methodological teaching modelled in the BGB, in solving cases based on violation of the duty to maintain safety by Estonian law, a presumption of the violation the duty must be applied to keep in accordance with the general rule provided in §1050 (1) of the LOA. The main advantages of this approach are that the burden of proving a negative fact is removed from the injured party and the burden is placed on the party to the procedure in whose internal sphere the facts needing proof are found; simplicity of the court procedure; more reliable evidence; and preventive impact on the violation of the duties to maintain safety.

Degree: Pravni fakultet, 2018, Univerzitet u Beogradu

Društvene nauke / Ustavno pravo Social sciences / constitutional law

Сматрамо да се основано може поставити питање: да ли је парламент још увек носилац законодавне… (more)

Subjects/Keywords: The following question can be raised: Are parliaments still the true bearers of the legislative power; or paraphrasing Hobbes: it is assumed who the legislator is; but is it also known? The subject of this thesis are the limits that parliaments are facing today while exercising their normative roles. These limitations are both internal and external; and may be traditional or of new origin. Today efficiency and speed are key expectations; it seems that parliaments as legislators are losing their breath and are facing many limitations in their role that has for centuries been their ”basic one”: their legislative role. The fact that the focus of power is increasingly shifting towards the executive branch of power even in countries with parliamentary systems of governance is not a novelty anymore. Parliaments; however; do not only face the limits placed before them by the governments throughout the legislative process. The key role of political parties; the relativization of the classical concept of sovereignty; and other limiting factors of the legislative role of parliaments; which need further examination; may lead to the modification of their functions in modern states. The aim of the dissertation is to through thoroughly selected scientific sources and relying on a decade-long experience as Member of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia precisely determine and rationally examine and draft an academic position about the role of parliaments today with regard to the limitations in their legislative function. We started off from the hypothesis that the legislative function of parliaments is set by the constitution; and narrowed by the ever increasing role of the governments in the legislative process; by political parties and other participants in the legislative procedure; as well as by the relativization of national sovereignty in the framework of international integration and also by the impact of global economic flows.

Subjects/Keywords: The subject of the dissertation is the Permanent Court of Arbitration; its characteristics and the contribution of its jurisprudence in international public law; because in an international public order; in the framework of peaceful ways of settling disputes; arbitration; as a procedure before the Permanent Court of Arbitration; takes a significant place. The basic goals set during the research are multiple. The primary goal is to show to the international community; as a whole; the importance of the establishment of the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Hague Peace Conference in 1899; in view of the existence of the possibility that international disputes will be settled by arbitration as a procedure; in order to avoid; at that time; potential international conflicts and wars. The following group of objectives related to the presentation of procedural regulation and modernization of the procedure for conducting proceedings before the Permanent Court of Arbitration; namely: the provisions of the Conventions on the Peaceful Settlement of Disputes of 1899 and 1907; UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules from 1976 and 2010; The Arbitration Rules of the Permanent Court of Arbitration; adopted in 2012 and the provisions of the 1982 Convention on the Law of the Sea; which regulate the arbitration proceedings. A special set of objectives concerned the study of decisions made and the conduct of arbitrators in litigated disputes in terms of applying international legal norms to specific disputable situations that were the subject of the dispute. The scope of the subject of the research requires the use of a dogmatic method; a legal-sociological method; as well as any other legal method whose application will lead to a more comprehensive achievement of the unified objectives of this paper.

Theoretical analysis of the key constraints that occur in the transmission of mathematical modeling of dynamical systems into field of physics education in secondary schools is presented. In an effort to explore the extent to which current physics education promotes understanding of models and modeling; we analyze the curriculum and the three most commonly used textbooks for high school physics. We focus primarily on the representation of the various stages of modeling in the solved tasks in textbooks and on the presentation of certain simplifications and idealizations; which are in high school physics frequently used. We show that one of the textbooks in most cases fairly and reasonably presents the simplifications; while the other two half of the analyzed simplifications do not explain. Subjects/Keywords: Borrelia lonestari; a putative agent of southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI); was first isolated in 2003 from Amblyomma americanum ticks. We used a low passage isolate (LS-1) to inoculate white-tailed deer; mice; cattle; and dogs. Evidence of infection was evaluated via examination of Giemsa and acridine orange stained blood smears; polymerase chain reaction (PCR); indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test; and/or culture isolation. In each of two deer; spirochetes were visualized stained blood smears; blood was PCR positive up to 19 days post-infection; antibodies were produced; and the organism was re-isolated from blood. Evidence of an active infection was not detected in mice; calves; or dogs. These results show that white-tailed deer are susceptible to infection with B. lonestari and develop a spirochetemia; while mice; calves; and dogs apparently do not. Additional tick transmission studies are needed to evaluate the role of deer as reservoir hosts of B. lonestari. INDEX WORDS: Borrelia lonestari; experimental infection; southern tick-associated rash illness; STARI

11. Achuo, George. Partner satisfaction and renewal likelihood in consumer supported agriculture (CSA) : a case study of The Equiterre CSA network.

Degree: MS, Department of Agricultural Economics, 2003, McGill University

Subjects/Keywords: Organic farming  – Québec (Province).; Consumer supported agriculture (CSA) is a mutually beneficial food system that is based on forward contracts between a farmer and consumers. CSA emphasizes organic production methods, and local production for local consumption. A review of the literature on CSA indicates that it is thriving as an alternative to the conventional food system. Yet, the sustainable growth of the CSA food system is threatened by high partner turnover. A case study of the Equiterre CSA network was done to identify causes of high partner turnover. 378 useable surveys, out of 500 sent out, were used to identify factors that influence satisfaction and the likelihood to renew the partnership. An ordered probit model was estimated for each dependent variable. Nine factors each were found to significantly influence satisfaction and the likelihood to renew partnership. Satisfaction with product quantity, quality and price, and partner perception of their ability to influence basket contents were statistically significant in the both models. Satisfaction with the location of delivery points was significant in the renewal model. In terms of socio-demographic variables, income and the number of children under 12 years in a household both had negative effects on satisfaction while age had a positive effect on renewal. A high correlation (r=0.7) between global satisfaction and renewal suggests that CSAs can reduce the turnover rate by delivering in areas that influence global satisfaction with the system. The results suggest that the single most important area in this regard is that of choice and variety of produce. A more flexible system of constituting baskets and a more diversified selection of produce may be useful areas of focus on the farmers' part.; Consumer satisfaction  – Québec (Province).; Sustainable agriculture  – Québec (Province).

Sixteen male students of the 9thyear made part of this study, indentified with bad/good behavior. The data collection was made through questionnaires consisted of open questions. The data was evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively. The good and bad behaviors are conceptualized by individual and relational attitudes. The teachers’ perception of the behavior is different from the perception that the young people has of themselves. The majority of the students do not consider themselves as an influence to the peers, and not even the peers as an influence to them. The promotion of peer relationship is seen as through the realization of specific activities. The student group which was identified with bad behavior presents a lower conceptual variety.; Appropriate and inappropriate behaviors; Peers relations; School; Students; Social and personal competence

Subjects/Keywords: Cancer is a complex disease where cells proliferate uncontrollably and spread into different parts of the body. Unlimited division of cancer cells occurs due to activation of proteins that promote cell growth, i.e. oncoproteins, and simultaneous inactivation of proteins that regulate cell death, i.e. tumorsuppressors. Although the number of ascertained cancer-associated proteins continues to grow rapidly, the transformation of a normal cell into a tumor cell depends on changes in several key signaling pathways that regulate cell proliferation and death. Identification of tumor-associated proteins and studying their function might be applied to the elaboration of novel therapeutic strategies. In this work the functions of a potential oncoprotein leukosialin (CD43) were studied in human cancer cells. CD43 has long been regarded as a molecule present exclusively on the surface of blood cells. However, there is a growing body of evidence suggesting that CD43 might play a role in tumor development. Several studies demonstrate high level of CD43 in human solid tumor cells, including colorectal tumors, but it was not detectable in normal colon cells. Moreover, CD43 has been shown to interact with proteins that influence cell survival or proliferation. The results of the present research imply that CD43 in cooperation with the well known oncoprotein β-catenin facilitates cell growth and survival. It is believed that disorders in the functioning of β-catenin frequently lead to the formation of various types of cancer, especially colorectal cancers, since deregulated β-catenin triggers production of proteins that stimulate cell division. In cells with impaired tumorsuppressors, the increased amount of CD43, via β-catenin signaling, might cause uncontrollable proliferation of cells and initiate a tumor. However, excessive growth signals emanating from CD43 and β-catenin actuate the process of cell death, which is the main protective mechanism against tumors. Furthermore, the tumorsuppressors, in turn, decrease the level of CD43 protein. In summary, this work presents new aspects on the ability of CD43 to enhance cell growth and thereby promote tumor formation. Also, a previously undescribed negative feedback loop is proposed between CD43 and tumorsuppressors that might be important in preventing the disease.; tumor cells growth; tumor markers; molecular aspects; proteins; kasvajarakkude kasv; valgud; kasvaja markerid; molekulaaraspektid

Degree: PhD, Botany and Plant Pathology, 2016, Purdue University

Subjects/Keywords: Fusarium verticillioides causes an important seed disease on maize and produces fumonisin B1 (FB1); a mycotoxin that is detrimental to human and animal health. Previous studies discovered that expression of FST1 is required for FB1 production and wild-type level of virulence on maize seeds. FST1 encodes a putative protein with 12 transmembrane domains with sequence similarity to hexose transporters. However; those studies have failed to prove its ability to transport glucose; fructose or mannose. I identified another three phenotypes associated with the lack of a functional FST1; which includes reduced hydrophobicity of hyphae; reduced macroconidia production; and increased sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide. My research compared the transcriptome of the wild type and strain Δfst1 when grown on autoclaved maize kernels. The 17 % of transcriptome (2677 genes) were differentially expressed. Examination of these genes indicated that the disruption of FST1 function affected genes involved in secondary metabolism; cell structure; conidiogenesis; virulence; and resistance to reactive oxygen species. Additionally; I used a Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain (Δitr1) lacking a functional inositol transporter gene (ITR1) to study the function of FST1. This yeast mutant grows poorly in myo-inositol medium and is not inhibited by FB1. I found that expression of FST1 in strain Δitr1 restored growth on myo-inositol medium and sensitivity to FB1 to levels observed in the wild-type yeast strain. The results indicate that FST1 can function as an inositol transporter and suggests it can transport FB1 into fungal cells. Finally; the functional importance of amino acids in FST1 was examined by creating targeted mutations in the central loop and C-terminus regions of the protein. Expression of these engineered FST1 genes in stain Δitr1 of S. cerevisiae and strain Δfst1 of F. verticillioides indicated that both the central loop and C-terminus are critical for FST1 functionality. Overall this research has established the first characterized inositol transporter in filamentous fungi and has advanced our knowledge about the global regulatory functions of FST1.; Plant Pathology

Subjects/Keywords: Packaging is an important element responsible for brand growth and one of the main rea-sons for producers to gain competitive advantages through technological innovation. In this re-gard, the aim of this work is to design a fully autonomous electronic system for a smart bottle packaging, being integrated in a European project named ROLL-OUT. The desired application for the smart bottle is to act as a fill-level sensor system in order to determine the liquid content level that exists inside an opaque bottle, so the consumer can exactly know the remaining quantity of the product inside. An in-house amorphous indium–gallium–zinc oxide thin-film transistor (a-IGZO TFT) model, previously developed, was used for circuit designing purposes. This model was based in an artificial neural network (ANN) equivalent circuit approach. Taking into account that only n-type oxide TFTs were used, plenty of electronic building-blocks have been designed: clock generator, non-overlapping phase generator, a capacitance-to-voltage converter and a comparator. As it was demonstrated by electrical simulations, it has been achieved good functionality for each block, having a final system with a power dissipation of 2.3 mW (VDD=10 V) not considering the clock generator. Four printed circuit boards (PCBs) have been also designed in order to help in the testing phase. Mask layouts were already designed and are currently in fabrication, foreseeing a suc-cessful circuit fabrication, and a major step towards the design and integration of complex trans-ducer systems using oxide TFTs technology; Capacitance-to-voltage converter; Comparator; Oxide TFTs circuit integration; Domínio/Área Científica::Engenharia e Tecnologia::Engenharia dos Materiais

Subjects/Keywords: ABSTRACT Since the 1970s; local governments in Georgia have been authorized; upon voter approval; to levy a one-percent general-purpose Local Option Sales Tax (LOST); which is earmarked for property tax relief. Using socioeconomic and fiscal data during the period 1975-2002; this dissertation examines the adoption and budgetary effects of the LOST in Georgia counties. The adoption of the LOST is studies with a discrete-time event history analysis. The results suggest that the probability that an eligible county will adopt the LOST is determined by a set of motivations; obstacles; and resources. The motivations are related to the perceived property tax level; the existence of fiscal pressure; and the potential of sales tax exportation. The obstacles are related to existing sales tax rates and the level of tax competition. The resources for overcoming these obstacles are related to the tax mimicking behavior in the process of policy diffusion. Budgetary effects of the LOST are examined with pooled time-series regressions. The results suggest that (1) the rollback of property tax millage rates by the LOST is gradually offset by a faster growth of the rates in the post-LOST period; (2) the LOST proceeds are fungible; as they lead to higher levels of revenue and expenditure in the counties; and (3) the levels of fungibility vary across counties in accordance with their fiscal and socioeconomic conditions. INDEX WORDS: Local option sales tax; Property tax relief; Policy innovation; Policy diffusion; Earmarking; Tax mimicking

Subjects/Keywords: Today’s world is more complex than ever before. Negotiations that were once focused on one or two isolated issues now encompass multiple sectors and an increasing number of parties. Negotiators must constantly make decisions based on uncertain and changing information – decisions that often have irreversible impacts on relationships and deal outcomes. Training policymakers; business leaders; and nonprofits to negotiate in an evolving 21st century has never been more important or challenging. Dragonfly Negotiations & Consulting is a client-based company that works with organizations in order to impart negotiation and leadership skills. Dragonfly provides training for clients that are focused on advancing social change within their respective fields – organizations that are often operating on the cutting edge of complicated social policies. Dragonfly; along with the vast majority of other negotiation consulting firms and academic negotiation courses; primarily relies on simulations to teach negotiation skills and lessons. Simulations; a form of experiential learning; are particularly prevalent in negotiation training given the important role that soft skills and social processes play in mastering the field. Yet despite the increase in complexity found in today’s realworld negotiations; simulations have failed to similarly evolve. This report seeks to answer how Dragonfly can best design and implement simulations that teach its clients to negotiate in an exceedingly complicated world. In order to do so; a gap-analysis of presently available simulations was performed; derived by creating a framework that isolated the architectural components found in different types of negotiation simulations. These findings indicate that though a substantial number of simulations involve multiple parties and nonscorable interests; very few simulations contain the dynamic complexity of real-world negotiations. To form recommendations for how Dragonfly can design future complex simulations; the unique features of real-world negotiations were identified and combined with pedagogical theories deconstructed from existing simulations. Supplementing these recommendations; this report provides a proposed simulation example that incorporates a new; complex design; as well as potential criteria to evaluate the success of future simulations. To assist Dragonfly in implementing these recommendations; a barriers analysis was conducted to help overcome potential issues.

Subjects/Keywords: Neoliberalism as the current version of capitalism has produced a number of problems, the worsening capitalist tendency to universal commodification where everything is commodified, including education, health, culture and sports. Availing this system the individual interest where social and economic rights are minimized. The basic principles of neoliberalism are: Minimum state participation in the economy of a country, very little government intervention in the labor market, privatization of state, free movement of international capital, emphasis on globalization, opening the economy to the entry of multinationals, adoption measures against economic protectionism and bureaucracy of the state. Whereas education is more than a form of capital investment, neoliberal conception of education that became another of capitalist economic policy model strengthening element implemented in and by countries in socio economic development. In the neoliberal discourse education passes to enter the capitalist market soon working their similarity, leaving just to be part of the social and political sphere, the political content of citizenship has been replaced by consumer rights. Hence the neoliberal view that parents and students are consumers. In general, we see that in recent years through official documents show the presence of neoliberal strategies being implemented in Brazil. Similarly education has been focused on the interests of capital owners. So with this research I analyze the influence that this new capitalist strand has caused the Brazilian basic education.; Dominação; Educação; Impacto; Globalização; Neoliberalism; Domination; Education; Impact; Globalization

Subjects/Keywords: The purpose of this master thesis is to present a comparison between the factors that affects an environmental investment. This is done through applying a theoretical framework on the factors affecting a company’s existing appraisal model for environmental investments. The company that was a part of this thesis asked at an initial stage for confidentiality; therefore it is called the Company in this thesis. The Company that contributes with the appraisal model is a multination-al group with operations in many different industries; but with a focus on the Nordic countries and products that may be linked to the agricultural sector. The theoretical framework has its base in the concepts of value and investments and their connection to the environment and the envi-ronmental investment. The identified factors in the theoretical framework are:; Investeringsbedömning; miljöinvesteringar; påverkande faktorer; miljö; investering

Celý objekt je následně potažen laminátem a skelným vláknem pro zpevnění celého korpusu a pro získání různorodější a hrubší výsledné struktury.; In my thesis; I would like to show the procedure to which I got with this technique. Implodováním six discarded barrels from a laminate formed the so-called six parts of the puzzle. A simple variováním; I was looking for continuity between the barrels and shapes I started to build on each other. Individual welded joints I and shapes so that they really followed; I drew a laminate with fiberglass. In this procedure; I had worked up to a height of about 5.5 m; this dimension it makes things a massive total and handling challenging subject that is challenging to stability. Thus I was forced to the bottom of the mount steel base. This supporting cross will be discussed so as to not disturb the thing both visually and conceptually. The whole object is then coated with fiberglass and glass fiber reinforcement for the entire body and to become more diverse and the resulting coarser structure.
