Passages refers to transition, displacement, change, transmission and continuity. Perception of the body as a whole in the action of making; the movement and its resonances in connection with breathing and how this is transmitted in modeling the pieces. If passages here means relating differences, something that occurs somewhere between the being and the matter, we are talking about a cold, amorphous and inert matter which absorbs, register and gives back an action1 from the contact with the hands and body. Initially I worked from tree branches as a structure determinate by the growing of the plant, matter which organizes itself moved by a principle of vital energy, superposing the clay on the movements of its forms. Afterwards, as the pieces would get dry, Ive realized other interventions on it, until the moment of the firing, when the branches disappeared, leaving voids and vestiges of its contact with clay. The blending of ceramic materials as a composed paste, associated with firing as a process of transformation, in which the kiln is build in adequacy to each work, are also important issues that are being developed in this research. Initiated through painting and engraving, this research expanded to the medium of ceramics, working with proceedings of destruction and regeneration, in the relation of intention and…

This work aims to develop a study of the concept of creative memory following the creative pattern used in the play \"Memoria da Cana(̈Sugar Cane Memory), a revisit of the text \"Album de Família (Family Album) by playwright Nelson Rodrigues, and based on the studies of the patriarchal family and family memories of the artists/researchers involved in the process. It also deals with the creative process of the play Assombrações do Recife Velho (Hauntings of Old Recife), a free adaptation of Gilberto Freire´s homonym play. For that, I availed myself of the relationship between the theater of popular origins and the contemporary scene and the interface between performer and brincante (folk culture character), as well as the artists/researchers´ personal memories. The two plays were developed by the group Os Fofos Encenam, under my artistic direction.

▼ The Northern Bobwhite (<i>Colinus virginianus</i>) is a popular game bird that inhabits pine grasslands throughout the Southeast. This study used experimental manipulation of food resources to investigate how resource availability influenced foraging behavior and space use of bobwhite in a southern pine-grassland forest system.
Radio marked bobwhite were monitored to determine daily space use, movements, and daily and seasonal ranges. I observed no difference in daily (<i>P</i> = 0.06) or seasonal home range size (<i>P</i> = 0.55) between feeding treatments. However, dispersion in daily locations of radio-marked bobwhite differed among feed levels (<i>P</i> < 0.001).
I assessed effects of food availability on diet and total body lipids of birds harvested from each treatment during February. Although bobwhite extensively utilized supplemental feed when available, energy value of pre-roosting crop contents did not differ among treatments (<i>P</i> = 0.41), but total body lipids differed between feed treatments and years (<i>P</i> < 0.001).

▼ The investigation of thermo-mechanical and thermal treatments on the microstructure and mechanical behavior of DP590 and TRIP680 steels revealed several critical aspects of the materials responses to different testing. Various thermo-mechanical treatments were carried out to identify the responses to the said treatments. Following these preconditioning protocols, quasi-static, and high strain-rate tests showed how the materials reacted under tensile testing to fracture. Ensuing heat treatments on the as-received materials were performed to bring about phase fraction changes to each of the steels. These heat-treated DP and TRIP steels were examined to discover microstructural characteristics and mechanical responses through quasi-static and high strain-rate testing. The responses of the steels were analyzed and compared to the as-received testing results to observe the significant changes of mechanical behavior that occurred.

▼ Background: The automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs) now allow for more rapid access to medications for both providers and pharmacists. However, automation may generate its own challenges with patient care. Medication overrides from ADCs circumvent pharmacist verification and creates an opportunity for medication errors.
Methods: A 60-week quasi-experimental study has been conducted at large Veterans Affairs (VA) academic medical center from January 1, 2019 to February 29, 2020 to assess the efficacy of the ISMP-endorsed interventions in reducing medication overrides. Three interventions were implemented for this study: 1:1 nursing education, medication override list, and ADC medication override privilege modification. The interrupted-time series with multiple regression analysis was conducted to assess the efficacy of each intervention. The primary endpoint was the rate of medication overrides (primarily controlled substances and antibiotics) from the unit ADC at each intervention time periods. The secondary endpoints included medication override rates for controlled substances and fentanyl intravenous piggyback (IVPB), the most common overridden item, at each study intervention time periods. The other secondary endpoint was the comprehensive medication override rates for all medications in the unit ADC after November 1, 2019.
Results: Total of 1,783 medication overrides from January 1, 2019 to February 29, 2020 were included in the final analysis from 616 patients. The interrupted time series with multiple logistic regression showed that the 1:1 nursing education significantly reduced the medication overrides (t = -6.10 [95% CI: -15.34 to -7.75]; P < 0.0001) and the decreased trend was maintained afterwards. No significance was found from the medication override list (t = -0.91 [95% CI: -5.17 to 1.94]; P=0.366) and the nursing ADC access privilege restriction (t = -0.82 [95% CI: -4.75 to 1.98; P=0.414]). Secondary endpoints have seen similar results. The 1:1 nursing education significantly reduced controlled substance (t = -6.34 [95% CI: -17.79 to -9.25]; P < 0.0001) and fentanyl IVPB override rates (t = -3.08 [95% CI: -43.69 to -9.28]; P = 0.003). The medication override list did not statistically reduce the controlled substances and fentanyl IVPB; whereas, ADC medication override privilege modification made a significant impact on fentanyl IVPB (t = -2.47 [95% CI: -34.08 to -3.56]; P=0.017). All medication overrides after November 1, 2019 have also significantly decreased monthly medication override rate from 7.63% to 2.90%.
Conclusion: An interdisciplinary approach to ISMP-endorsed interventions significantly reduced the overall medication overrides rates in Veterans Affairs intensive care unit.

▼ This research project into Reverse Auction Bidding is the first of the twenty studies completed to this time to use professional contractors. Previous case studies used students at Texas A&M University as the subjects of the research. Reverse Auction Bidding is a new form of bidding using the internet as the bidding mechanism. A purchaser requests bids through a web site, typically a commercial site. Invited bidders can respond under a standard set of timed conditions to the bidding documents on the web site. This TAMU based research program has a SQL Server based web site, which uses house slabs in Houston as a bidding game. This study of The Reverse Auction Bidding method used four individuals from a supply company as the subjects of the work. The methods remained essentially unchanged from the earlier case studies, except that an ASP.NET MVC4 website has been developed to improve the response time and to permit data analysis as the game is played. Each bidder has capacity to bid on three sites at any time, a bidder can purchase additional capacity from the bank to increase the number of allowed simultaneous bids. Each game lasts for twenty minutes, fifteen minutes of game play followed by a five minute break to simulate the work week. Each individual was given a personality test for the review of bidding performance with personality type. The conclusions were that the professional bidders were more competitive than subjects in prior studies, the bidder who made the most aggressive use of the bank loan performed best as has been consistently shown, but the personality results did not match prior findings. Further work with professionals is recommended.

▼ Mg2Si-based thermoelectrics are currently the most promising, environmentally benign and inexpensive materials for power generation. The objective of this thesis is to characterize Mg2Si-based thermoelectric materials using state-of-the-art synchrotron radiation techniques including infrared reflectivity/absorption spectroscopy and high resolution X-ray powder diffraction. This is complemented by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Also reported here is the main research: the analysis of the electronic structure and transport properties of doped Mg2Si using experimental and theoretical methods.
To enhance the thermoelectric performance, Mg2Si doped with a single component of Bi or Sb were studied. The investigation showed by doping the electron carrier concentrations were increased. In particular, dc conductivities of the doped samples were extracted from the analysis of infrared reflectivity spectra employing the Drude free electron model. We found the conductivity was lower when determined by infrared measurements rather than in-situ four point probe measurements of the bulk sample because of the limited penetration depth of infrared (IR) radiation and the very small spot size. In particular, we were able to extract the electrical conductivity, relaxation times and electron effective masses of the samples. DFT calculations reproduced the experimental observations and show a substantial increase in the Seebeck coefficients.
The next step was to study the effect after doping with two different dopants. For this purpose, we investigated the effect of Ge substitute Si in Bi doped Mg2Si. In particular, the dc conductivities of the doped samples were extracted from the analysis of infrared reflectivity spectra. From the IR data, we extracted the relevant parameters for electrical transport. The experimental data were explained with theoretical DFT calculations in which the calculated densities of states (DOS) of the Ge- and Bi-doped Mg2Si samples were found to be very similar, and therefore to have comparable Seebeck coefficients. The steep curvatures of the DOS at the Fermi level indicate a light electron band. We found the thermal conductivity of Mg2Si is substantially lower from 7 Wm-1K-1 to 2.7 Wm-1K-1 in Mg2Si0.677Ge0.3Bi0.023 at 300 K. A performance figure of merit of 0.7 was achieved at 773 K for this sample.
We further investigated the effect of multi-doping with Sb, Al and Zn on the enhancement of the thermoelectric and electrical transport properties of Mg2Si. A maximum ZT of 0.964 was found for Sb0.5%Zn0.5% doped Mg2Si (Mg1.995Zn0.005Si0.995Sb0.005) at 880 K. This value is comparable to those of PbTe based thermoelectrics which are the currently the materials used in commercial products.
We also studied the effect of pressure on the thermoelectric performance of a Al-doped Mg2Si sample. From in-situ X-ray diffraction, we observed a structural transform in which the electrical conductivity was increased after the phase transition. The experimental observed maximum thermoelectric power at 1.9 GPa…

▼ The current study is an extension and replication of a previous study that examined the severity of depressive symptoms and rates of probable depression assessed by different instruments, the CESD-5 and PHQ-9, in two separate surveys (2006, 2010), among residents in predominately rural regions of South Central Texas. The current study examines the rate of depression, and the associations between depression, race/ethnicity, gender, and residence in a sample of 5,230 participants. Participants included individuals from various ethnic groups including White/Caucasian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian or Pacific Islander, and Native American. Participants ranged in age from 18-99 years old. The study expands on previous work by examining the rate of anxiety and the link between anxiety, race/ethnicity, gender, and residence. The study utilized two reliable and valid measures of depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-2) and anxiety (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7). We found the same pattern in the rates of depression reported in the previous study. The current study revealed that Black/African American, female, rural area respondents had higher percentages of depression and anxiety.

▼ The United States pecan industry is experiencing a rapid acreage increase. Many growers believe high rates of nitrogen (
N) accelerate tree development and increase yields; however, a high rate of
N application may not be cost-effective and can be harmful to the environment. The aim of this project was to evaluate the effect of
N application rate on young pecan seedling performance as measured through photosynthesis, water use efficiency (WUE, defined as the ratio between net assimilation rate and transpiration rate), growth, and to determine if and when
N application rates had an effect on root system, especially specific root length (SRL) and root length density (RLD) following five
N application rates (0x, 1/4x, 1/2x, 1x, and 2x, where x corresponded to the recommended rate, as reported by Texas AgriLife Extension). Soil sampling was performed five days after
N application and continued throughout two growing seasons for evaluation of soil nitrate and SRL and RLD. Diameter of the seedlings was measured at two locations on each tree throughout both years of the experiment. Gas exchange was measured every 3-4 weeks using an infrared gas analyzer. Results showed that soil
N was higher in the 1x and 2x treatments than in the other treatments. However,
N treatment did not affect amount of WUE, net photosynthesis rate, trunk growth, SRL, or RLD. Therefore, it is possible that the most effective rate of
N application for young pecan seedlings is likely much lower than recommended rates.

▼ The nature of non-statistical dynamic Kinetic Isotope Effects for a series of ordinary organic reactions is studied throughout this dissertation. A combination of experimental intramolecular KIEs using NMR methodology with computational calculations was employed in order to shed light about the selectivity in the Diels-Alder dimerization of methacrolein and cyclopentadienone, the iminium catalyzed Diels-Alder between cyclopentadiene and trans-cinnamaldehyde and the cleavage of alkoxy radicals.
Newtonian isotope effects as the underlying physical phenomena behind the KIEs in the thermal dimerization of methcrolein was studied. The temperature dependence of these novel form of KIEs was investigated by analyzing the isotopic distribution at dicyclopentadienone prepared at low and high temperatures. It was shown that Newtonian KIEs are temperature independent over a range of 100 degrees.
The non-statistical behavior in the cleavage of alkoxy radicals has been investigated. These highly reactive intermediates are prone to behave in a non-statistical fashion due to their excess energy. The opening of 1-methylcyclopentoxy radical has shown that heavy-atom tunneling can play an important role even at elevated temperatures. As the barrier for the cleavage for alkoxy radicals is decreased, other dynamic effects start to impact the selectivity of this reaction in ways that TST cannot account for.
On the iminium catalyzed Diels-Alder reaction between cyclopentadiene and transcinnamaldehyde, computational calculations support a two steps cycloaddition on the free energy surface and a “seemingly concerted” reaction in potential energy. The role of non-statistical recrossing for this cycloaddition was investigated experimentally by measuring intramolecular KIEs.

▼ With recent advancements in Additive Manufacturing, the need for computational models to gain theoretical understanding prior to experimentation is growing. In this work, a simulation of Directed Energy Deposition (DED) using Finite Volume Methods is developed to study the thermal behavior, especially the thermal history during the deposition process. DED is an Additive Manufacturing process that uses high-power lasers for material melting and can deliver near net shape of the desired component. The thermal histories of the process can help understand the microstructure, residual stress, and material properties of the obtained component. The experimental setup monitors the temperature using far-field temperature measurement devices, thus limiting temperature observation to a particular point as opposed to computational models, wherein the degree of freedom to monitor the temperatures is larger. 2D and 3D models were both developed, with the former being the stepping stone. The proposed simulation considers experimental processing conditions such as a moving heat source and relevant boundary conditions to generate plots of thermal histories. The results were based on the implementation of user-defined functions (UDF) in C to numerically simulate a moving heat source, which encompasses the properties of the laser. The results of the model were validated against experimental data. The validated model was then used for multiple depositions and the outcome is discussed based on the agreement and disparities in peak temperatures, heating, and cooling rates. Furthermore, the possibility to perform inverse predictions for the surface using measurements from a far-field point is discussed.

The tumor microenvironment plays a crucial role in cancer growth and dissemination. In colorectal cancer (CRC), one cellular actor is specifically present but poorly explored in the tumor microenvironment: enteric neurons (EN). Whereas neuro-epithelial interactions regulate intestinal epithelial cells homeostasy, the presence of such interactions in CRC microenvironment remains to demonstrate. This work combines in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo to demonstrate the existence of neuro-epithelial interactions and identify their impact on tumor progression. We demonstrated that tumor epithelial cells adhere and migrate along enteric nervous structures, implying specifically EN via the neuronal adhesion molecules L1CAM and N-Cadherin. Our data also suggest that neurogenesis occurs in the margin of CRC. Moreover, we demonstrated that tumor microenvironment and tumor cells from CRC release a soluble neurotrophic factor for EN. These results firstly highlight the role of EN in CRC tumor guidance via direct interactions. Besides, CRC favors the genesis of neurons/neurites potentially implicated in the physical tumor guidance. Altogether, these data initiate a novel research way in the comprehension of mechanisms implicated in CRC dissemination

▼ The purpose of this thesis was to explore different
approaches for the synthesis of advanced precursors of rhazinilam
analogues. The intramolecular Michael Addition was envisaged in
order to obtain the pyrrole or pyrrolinone based analogues. The aim
of the first project was to develop a flexible, efficient synthesis
towards model systems.
N-acylation and
N-alkylation of the
corresponding substrates were intensively studied.
Oxydizing the pyrrole ring to pyrrolinone and blocking the C-5
position on the pyrrolinone ring seem to be a promising way to
increase the chemical stability of rhazinilam analogues and avoid
its enzymatic deactivation in target cells. The second project
focused on the preparation of highly substituted 2-pyrrolidinones
by a key Mukaiyama aldol reaction – Staudinger type reductive
cyclisation sequence.

▼ Cisplatin and carboplatin, which belong to the platinum based-drugs family are accustomed to treat various types of cancers. Although they have been used widely in chemotherapy, cisplatin and carboplatin are confronting some issues such as toxicities and drugs resistances. Therefore, designing a new drug without those issues is a challenge. In this study, the technique of Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) is employed in order to research the modification to guanine when cisplatin or carboplatin bound.
The success in clinical use of cisplatin has put metal-based drugs on the first row for cancer treatment. Other than platinum complexes, copper complexes gain major attraction to many scientists. It has been proposed that copper carries less toxic, so copper complexes are potential anticancer agents. Infrared and Raman spectroscopic techniques are engaged to obtain vibrational spectra of copper complexes. Also, SERS technique is utilized to explore the interaction of four new copper complexes with guanine or adenine.
The findings show that when either cisplatin or carboplatin is added to guanine, the guanine spectral changes within the range of 400 and 1800 frequencies. Moreover, new copper complexes also express the guanine or adenine spectral changes in the same range.

▼ Video coding tutorials enable expert and novice programmers to visually observe real developers write, debug, and execute code. Previous research in this domain has focused on helping programmers find relevant content in coding tutorial videos as well as understanding the motivation and needs of content creators. In this thesis, we focus on the link connecting programmers creating coding videos with their audience. More specifically, we analyze user comments on YouTube coding tutorial videos. Our main objective is to help content creators to effectively understand the needs and concerns of their viewers, thus respond faster to these concerns and deliver higher-quality content. A dataset of 6000 comments sampled from 12 YouTube coding videos is used to conduct our analysis. Important user questions and concerns are then automatically classified and summarized. The results show that Support Vector Machines can detect useful viewers' comments on coding videos with an average accuracy of 77%. The results also show that SumBasic, an extractive frequency-based summarization technique with redundancy control, can sufficiently capture the main concerns present in viewers' comments.

▼ In The Winter’s Tale, Shakespeare inverts the settings of his source, Robert Greene’s Pandosto, by placing Leontes, the jealous husband and parallel to the Bohemian king Pandosto, in Sicily and Polixenes, the opposite of Greene’s Sicilian
king Egistus, in Bohemia. It is unclear why Shakespeare makes this change, and the purpose of this project is to investigate the possible reasons for this reversal. I believe Shakespeare made this change both to place Leontes literally in the vicinity of
the entrance to the Christian otherworld, and to strengthen the parallel between the myth of Proserpina and the loss and recovery of Perdita (and Hermione). Examining the Christian elements of the play alongside the myth of Ceres and Proserpina will be
the focus of this essay.

Mechanical Ventilation and Optimisation through Analytical Lung Model.

▼ Mechanical Ventilation (MV) therapy is one of the most common treatments offered to
patients with respiratory failure in ICU. MV assists patient recovery by completely or
partially taking over the breathing process and helping with oxygen delivery and removal
of carbon dioxide. However, inappropriate MV settings mismatched to a given patient’s
condition can cause further damage. On the other hand, suboptimal MV settings can
increase the length of stay of the patient in ICU and increase the cost of treatment.
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a major form of Acute Lung Injury (ALI)
where clinicians offer a supportive environment for patient recovery by application of MV.
ARDS is characterised by inflamed and fluid filled lungs that result in alveolar collapse
and thus severe hypoxemia. Application of positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) is
employed to recruit and retain lung units to maximise gas exchange. However, a delicate
trade-off is required between maximising gas exchange and preventing further unintended
damage to the lungs, when determining optimum PEEP level.
Currently, no specific protocols to determine optimum PEEP level exist and selection of
PEEP is dependent on medical intuition and experience, primarily due to lack of easy
methods to determine patient – specific condition at the patient’s bedside. A mathematical
recruitment model is developed in Labview to help determine patient – specific condition
based on fundamental lung physiology and engineering principals in this thesis. The model
utilises readily available clinical data to determine parameters that identify underlying
patient – specific lung characteristics and conditions. Changes in these parameters can be
monitored over time and compared between patients to determine the severity of the
disease and evolution of disease with time.
A second model is developed to determine dynamic functional residual capacity (dFRC),
that represents the extra volume retained in a lung through application of PEEP. The model
extends previous efforts in the field that applied the stress – strain theory to lung
mechanics to estimate dFRC. This model estimates the patient’s dFRC using readily
available clinical data (PV data) and can be monitored over time to determine changes in a
xiii
given patient’s condition. The dFRC model introduces a new parameter, , which is
considered a population constant for the particular PEEP. The model offers an easy and
reliable method to determine dFRC since other methods are normally invasive or require
interruption of MV.
The models developed were validated against real – time clinical data obtained through
clinical trials. The recruitment model was found to fit the clinical data well with error
values within acceptable limits. It also enabled identification of parameters that reflect the
underlying patient – specific lung condition. The dFRC model was able to estimate the
dFRC for a patient with high level of accuracy for clinically applicable PEEP levels. The
two models work…

▼ Within a neo-liberal world polity, the concept of autonomy is increasingly perceived as conducive to postmodern nations’ rational progress in developing knowledge societies. In accordance with global trends, the Taiwanese government implemented a policy of performance-based school management in 2005 to enhance educational accountability, efficiency, equity and quality. This autonomy-based reform perceives all educational stakeholders as self-interested, utility-maximizing market egoists who are capable of realizing their maximum potential by ceaselessly making consumer-style choices. The government assumes that the provision of choices will give everyone an equal chance of educational success.
The negative socio-political consequences brought about by the adoption of neo-liberalism’s beliefs and practices have been explicitly acknowledged and illustrated in the literature. Nonetheless, the ways neo-liberalism has affected Taiwan’s socio-educational reality have scarcely been acknowledged or examined, and even on a theoretical level there has been little thought given to the provision of alternative socio-educational possibilities. Thus, this research, grounded in the context of Taiwan, analyzed neo-liberal ideologies to discover their implications for socio-educational practices. Moral and philosophical insights from various theorists were synthesized and advanced as a substitute for neo-liberalism.
This research was based on the method of deconstruction and reconstruction of textual discourse. For deconstructive analysis, the aim was to investigate and problematize how certain neo-liberal values have come to be globally/nationally institutionalized, and utilized to manipulate citizens’ consciousness for the maximization of economic efficiency, productivity, and profitability in the education market. The reconstructive synthesis, then, aimed to initiate possible socio-educational changes through reconceptualising these same values in respect to Taiwan’s contextual specificity.
Overlooking the need to address neo-liberalism’s belief in individualism, inequitable socio-economic structures and monistic, decontextualised and mechanistic epistemology, the Taiwanese government’s promotion of autonomy was found to perpetuate socio-economic inequalities, power imbalances, human monism and intellectual inflexibility in education.
A shift in epistemology wherein autonomy was reconceptualised as “heteronomous autonomy” was found to be capable of reorienting the overall frame of democratic reference towards a communitarian paradigm that would contribute to greater social equity and solidarity. This finding is extremely important as heteronomous autonomy takes human diversity as its foundation, so the emphasis changes from the rights of the individual to the self’s unconditional responsibility to and for differences. Thus, a
heteronomous-autonomy-based education would forsake neo-liberalism’s standardized pedagogical approaches in favour of a creative framework-in-context. Committing to increased democratic justice…

▼ The primary aim of this study was to compare levels of cognitive anxiety for a group of first-time hearing aid users and their significant other before, during, and after hearing aid fitting. Secondary goals included: (1) comparing levels of cognitive anxiety for participants and their significant others at the same intervals, (2) assessing possible effects of gender on the experience of cognitive anxiety, (3) comparing the levels of cognitive anxiety for participants who adopted hearing aids and those that did not, and (4) identifying themes relating to the experience of hearing impairment and consultation for services. Thirty-nine adults between the ages of 30 and 87 years of age with and without hearing impairments participated in several interviews. Cognitive anxiety was measured using the Cognitive Anxiety Scale (CAS) by Viney & Westbrook (1976), which is a content analysis, grounded in personal construct psychology. The following research questions have been addressed:
1a) Do cognitive anxiety levels change in individuals with hearing impairment as they go through the consultation process? 1b) Is there any difference in cognitive anxiety levels between male and female participants with hearing impairment as they go through the consultation process? 2a) Do cognitive anxiety levels change in normal hearing significant others of individuals with hearing impairment as they go through the consultation process? 2b) Is there any difference in cognitive anxiety levels between male and female significant others as they go through the consultation process? 3a) Do cognitive anxiety levels differ between participants with hearing impairment who adopt amplification and those who do not? 3b) Do cognitive anxiety levels of significant others differ between participants with hearing impairment who adopt amplification and those who do not?
Results revealed reduced cognitive anxiety levels for hearing impaired adults between the first interview and third interview, between the second interview and third interview, but no significant difference was found between the first interview and second interview. Furthermore, for significant others, CAS scores were significantly higher at interview 2 compared to interview 3, but no significant difference was found between interview 1 and interview 3, or between interview 1 and interview 2. Additionally, no significant differences in levels of cognitive anxiety were found between hearing impaired adults and significant others in the adopter and non-adopter group, and no gender differences were observed between hearing impaired adults and significant others. This study illustrates how important it is to involve the significant other in the consultation progress. However, due to a small sample size most analyses were underpowered therefore more research is needed to investigate cognitive anxiety levels in hearing impaired adults and their significant others.

▼ Presented thesis deals with the preparation and characterization of hydrogels based on positively-charged biopolymer and negatively-charged tenside. As an appropriate representative of positively-charged polymer was chosen chitosan, because of his biocompatibility and biodegrability, and
N,N,
N-trimethylchitosan, which was synthetised from chitosan in this diploma thesis. The final product of synthesis was characterised by SEC-MALS, elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic rezonation. Interactions between these polymers and representatives of negatively-charged tensides, which are sodium dodecylsuphate and sodium tetradecylsulphate, were investigated. The main method used in this thesis was rheology, through it were investigated prepared hydrogels based on chitosan and tensides and also prepared microgels based on
N,N,
N-trimethylchitosan and tensides. The interactions between polymers and tensides have been proved.

▼ A field trial and a greenhouse experiment were
conducted to investigate the impacts of
N and K nutrients on plant
N/K assimilation, nitrate reductase activity (NRA), curd yield and
quality of cauliflower cv. ‘Minuteman’. In the field study the
treatments consisted of five
N rates (0, 55, 110, 165 and 220
kg/ha) and three K rates (0, 25 and 50 kg/ha). In the greenhouse
study the treatments were five levels of
N (0, 16.5, 33, 50 and
66.5 mg/plant/day) using a modified Hoagland nutrition solution. In
the field study the interaction of
N/K rates was significant in
cauliflower whole plant
N/K uptake. Head
N/K accumulation was
32-35% of plant total
N/K uptake (8.0 g/plant), which was
significantly correlated with head yield and size (P<0.05).
Cauliflower NRA was associated with leaf/head sap NO3-
N
concentrations. It is suggested that nitrogen and potassium
translocation is an important factor of cauliflower yield and
quality.

N fixation and grain yield under field and
greenhouse conditions. The study was conducted in the Wellington

1.5, 3 and 4.5 g/kg seed rates of inoculant and 0, 10, 20, and 30
kg/ha rates of
N fertilizer. Under acidic soil conditions, the
inoculated plants showed significant
N fixation responses in the
Wellington field while saline soil conditions suppressed
N fixation
in the Habitant field. The soybean grain yield showed an increasing
trend with the inoculant rate 4.5 g/kg seed. The starter

▼ The main objective of this project is the study of heterogeneous metallic catalysts for the production of fine chemicals and elimination of ultra low concentration of ethylene with horticultural applications.
Development of new active and selective catalysts in industrial processes has been possible due to a simultaneous application of rational design catalysts and characterization techniques of materials.
With this purpose, heterogeneous metallic catalysts with properties to reduce selectively nitro groups when other sensitive functions are present have been developed.
Monometallic and bimetallic Pt and Au catalysts were estudied in reductive coupling reactions with nitrocompunds, aldehydes and H2 which have allowed to evaluate variables as support effect, solvent, metal promoter and intensity of heat treatment on their catalytic behavior. The proposed procedure offers an efficient and sustainable alternative for the production of nitronas, imines or secondary amines through a metal heterogeneous catalysts that does not require the use of soluble, often toxic, additives.
On the other hand, it has been shown that silver supported on zeolite is able to adsorb high amounts of ethylene in ultra low concentrations in air (10 ppm). Taking this into account, the influence of concentration of active species according with framework used was investigated.
The influence of molecules, such as H2O or CO2, in competition for the active sites on the adsorption of ethylene was studied in order to optimize their behavior in processes of adsorption of trace amounts of ethylene with horticultural applications.; La presente tesis doctoral tiene como principal objetivo el estudio de catalizadores metálicos heterogéneos para la obtenció

▼ More significant development of nuclear energy will require scientific advances in the proper management and disposal of used fuel. To reduce the long-term radiotoxicity hazard associated with nuclear waste, the most viable approach is the closed nuclear fuel cycle where actinides, namely U, Np, Pu, and Am, are recovered for transmutation into short-lived radioisotopes. If transmutation of actinides is to be completed, these actinides need be selectively recovered from fission products prior to fast reactor fuel assemblies. Separation of americium from trivalent lanthanides and trivalent actinides is one of the most difficult elemental separation steps due to their similar chemical behavior. One separation method under consideration is oxidization of americium to the hexavalent state, forming a linear dioxo cation (AmO22+). Forcing americium to the hexavalent state provides a path for achieving a group hexavalent actinide separation from lanthanides, trivalent actinides, and remaining fission products. This work evaluates Cu3+ periodate as an oxidant to accomplish a group hexavalent actinide separation with diamyl amylphosphonate (DAAP) and
N,N-dialkylamide (monoamide) extractants. Oxidation of Np, Pu, and Am in molar nitric acid and subsequent extraction by DAAP was demonstrated using radiotracer methods and UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy. The UV-Vis-NIR measurements showed Am3+, AmO2+, and AmO22+ species were present during extraction process while NpO22+ and PuO22+ displayed more stability in solution. Due to AmO22+ reduction, phase contact times were limited to 5 seconds to obtain satisfactory extraction values. The interaction of Cu3+ periodate with other metals encountered in the fuel cycle was also studied, and found to inhibit AmO22+ extraction as well as form precipitates. Straight and branched acyl chain monoamides were synthesized to study their selectivity towards hexavalent actinides. The branched monoamides were shown to be selective for PuO22+ over Pu4+. A UV-Vis analysis of organic phase Pu4+ and PuO22+ showed two species are extracted by straight and branched monoamide ligands. One species was a nitrato charge neutral species extracted by monoamide, and the second were anionic species extracted by a protonated monoamide. Desirable AmO22+ extraction values were achieved using straight chain monoamides pretreated with an oxidant while branched monoamides showed room for improvement.

▼ Nucleophilic ring opening of
N-protected aziridines is known as one of the scarce methods for the incorporation of a protected amino-ethyl unit (-CR1R2CR3R4NR5R6) in a stereo- and regioselective way in organic synthesis. This amino-ethyl unit can be found in a wide range of natural products and
N-containing drugs. These
N-protected aziridines constitute an important group of target molecules in the synthetic organic chemistry, due to their biological activity as well as their structural complexity.
This PhDthesis comprises the development of new chiral
N-sulfinylaziridines, using a diastereoselective Mannich-type addition of
N-protected glycine derivatives across chiral α-functionalized-
N sulfinylimines. Hereby, an efficient synthesis of a wide range of new chiral aziridines is presented which can be applied as starting products for the synthesis of new heterocyclic compounds.

▼ The rhombus and parallelogram orbits are interesting families of periodic solutions, which come from celestial mechanics and the N-body problem. Variational methods with finite order symmetry group are used to construct minimizing non-collision periodic orbits.
We study the question of stability or instability of periodic and symmetric periodic solutions of the rhombus and the equal mass parallelogram four body problems. We first study the stability of periodic solutions for the rhombus four body problem. An analytical description of the variational principle is used to show that the homographic solutions are the minimizers of the action functional restricted to rhombus loop space [23]. We employ techniques from symplectic geometry and specifically a variant of the Maslov index for curves of Lagrangian subspaces along the minimizing rhombus orbit to prove the main result, Theorem 4.2.2, which states that the reduced rhombus orbit is hyperbolic in the reduced energy manifold when it is not degenerate.
We second study the stability for symmetric periodic solutions of the equal mass parallelogram four body problem. The parallelogram family is a family of Z_2× Z_4 symmetric action minimizing solutions, investigated by [7]. In this example, the minimizing solution [7] can be extended to a 4T-periodic solution using symmetries through square and collinear configurations. The Maslov index of the orbits is used to prove the main result, Theorem 5.3.1, which states that the minimizing equal mass parallelogram solution is unstable when it is non-degenerate.

Ln computer science many data are shaped as trees. ln the context of the Web, it is the case for XML formatted data in particular. XML is a markup language that has rapidly become a standard for information storage and data exchange. As query languages for relational databases are not well-suited to XML data, the need to have query languages specific to XML documents has increased. We distinguish unary queries which select a set of subparts of a document from n-ary queries which select a set of n-tuples of subparts of a document. Many logical formalisms for unary queries have been proposed, but less work has been done on logical formalisms for n-ary queries. This thesis is a fundamental study of n-ary queries that proposes two logical formalisms for n-ary queries: an extension of the navigational paradigm of the W3C standard XPath to n-ary queries, called the composition language, and an adapation of the spatiallogie TQL introduced by Cardelli and Ghelli. The question of expressive power, the complexity of the query evaluation problem as well as the satisfiability problem are considered. ln particular, the satisfiability problem for a TQL fragment is proved to be decidable by reduction to the emptiness test of a new class of tree automata with global constraints that is studied independently.

Due to the uranium natural resource depletion and the high growth in energy requirements, the fourth-generation nuclear power plants, with FNR, which involve the uranium and plutonium recycling, can be a future appropriate industrial route. Nonetheless, these evolutions modify potentially the spent fuel reprocessing. Furthermore, U(VI) and Pu(IV) precipitation, without any valency adjustment, would provide an answer to the efficiency and safety demands. In this context, the present work is interested in new organic ligands research allowing the quantitative precipitation of uranium(VI) and plutonium (IV) in a concentrated acid medium. The whole studies led to the identification of new organic ligands, and these new ligands are able to massively precipitate uranium(VI) in a nitric acid medium. Among these identified molecules, the oxalic acid/NCP ligands association has been used to precipitate both of these two actinides. A determination of the precipitate has been done in order to identify the structures and the morphologies of the precipitate. The solubility measurements over time have allowed to assess the fast precipitating kinetic and the very low solubility of the precipitated component. Finally, the thermal treatment of the precipitate gives rise to the formation of actinides oxides whose properties match the requirements of the fuel…
