▼ The new generation wireless broadband access technology-WiMAXï¼Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Accessï¼, possessing advanced features, such as higher transmission rates, longer transmission distances and wider coverage, is considered as one of the key technologies that can affect the future development of wireless telecommunications industry. Taiwan has ranked it a priority developing industry and has integrated the strengths of industries, government agencies, academia and research institutes to aggressively promote it in order to establish a more complete miniature of WiMAX industry chain.
For the purposes of attracting information industry to enter this field, encouraging new applied services and development and achieving the goal of bringing services to push forward industry, the National Communication Commissionï¼NCCï¼has issued 3 wireless broadband access business licenses in both north and south areas on July 2007. The bid-winners all adopts WiMAX technology to set up broadband mobile network, and provides services. Thus, at present, the wireless broadband access business is equal to WiMAX business. Therefore, the development of WiMAX industry plays a decisive role in Taiwanâs economic development, its effecting level to the whole economic impact deserves analyzing and researching carefully.
Based mainly on the
Input-
Output model, this study uses ex post facto comparison group and domestic concepts to combine the viewpoints of industrial analysis with the categories of 2004
Input-
Output Table published by National Statistics, Executive Yuan, R.O.C., and then, adjusts
Input-
Output Table into 40 departments according to the policy of developing WiMAX that aggressively pushes forward the equipment and applied service fields. After that, defines related industries of network setup area and proceeds industry categorizing. Furthermore, this research does the analysis of
Input-
Output related effects and of multiplier effect so as to determine the role what it can play in the whole economic system. In the meanwhile, this study predicts the economic benefits of future development in setting up WiMAX and the operating period and the spurring effect of other related industries. The following are the research resultsï¼
1. In the next 3 years period and 5 years period of developing WiMAX network, the estimated total amount of investments will 21,549 million NT dollars and 37,291 million NT dollars each . It is predicted that there will be a whole
output of domestic economic system of 34,489 million NT dollars and 59,685 million NT dollars; the created income effect will be 7,675 million NT dollars and 13,282 million NT dollars; the employment will be 7,588 jobs and 13,131 jobs each.
2. In the next 3 years period and 5 years period of operation, the estimated final demand variation amount will be 18,006 million NT dollars and 101,961 million NT dollars each by WiMAX services to customer. It is predicted that there will be a whole
output of economic system of 27,063 million NT dollars and 153,249 million NT dollars;…

2. Le…

▼ Environmental issues, particularly emissions of carbon dioxide play an important role in the research agenda of the field of economics. The problem of the increasing rate of global emissions of carbon dioxide is that culminates in a higher concentration of this gas in the atmosphere and this in turn causes an increase in global average temperature. The increase in temperature of the planet generates a series of imbalances, including: changes in rainfall, desertification and melting in some regions, impacts on agricultural production and human health. The difficulty of finding a solution to global warming occurs at the same pace of the difficulty of finding ways to sustain economic growth without increasing fuel consumption, especially fossil fuels. Thus, is necessary to think about environmental issues along with economic growth. Future prospects for Brazil indicate a high rate of growth in emissions, compared to the rate of countries in the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development). To estimate the direct emissions of CO2 this research uses a model that integrates an input-output and macroeconomic models. By using an integrated model the shocks induced in the input-output model no longer random (ad-hoc) and become macrobased giving consistency to the model. The data used to build the model are: input-output matrices from 1990 to 2005, direct emissions of CO2 industry, 2005 forecast growth rate of the Brazilian population and consumption of renewable and non renewable resources. The results of this research in general indicate that: all economic sectors will increase their emissions between 2006 and 2015; the concentration of emissions in a few sectors will continue; and in terms of emission the transportation sector in 2005 is the largest and still be in 2015. The proposed scenarios indicated that the transport sector is the most susceptible to changes in the labor supply and use of renewable and non renewable energies

▼ Systems analysis offers a good toolbox for evaluating
the broader environmental impact of products and processes.
However, it also poses unique challenges especially for
technologies in an early stage of development. The need for the
environmental life cycle assessment of potential nanoproducts has
been identified but has received very little attention. This work
develops original life cycle inventory modules for the synthesis of
carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and CNF reinforced polymer composites. The
modules are used to evaluate and compare the life cycle
environmental implications of the use of polymer nanocomposites vs.
steel in automotive body panels. The benefits and limitations of
life cycle assessment (LCA) for emerging technologies are
highlighted via case studies specific to nanotechnology. Although
LCA studies are important and represent important step towards a
conceptual systems thinking in the context of emerging
technologies, their utility is limited for guiding decision-making
due to several challenges. Some of these include the selection of
an arbitrary life cycle analysis boundary and the inability to
account for multiple and conflicting design objectives in a
rigorous manner. In this work, a novel multiscale, multiobjective,
and thermodynamic based approach is developed to utilize the
available information at multiple scales ranging from individual
equipment and processes, to the supply and demand chains, to the
economy and ecosystems for gaining insights into the tradeoffs
between ecological and economic aspects of manufacturing processes.
Economic aspects are accounted via traditional cost analysis.
Ecological aspects are considered via exergy analysis of the inputs
at each scale, and depend on the selected processes. The utility
and implications of the proposed multiscale approach over
traditional methods in guiding ecologically and economically
conscious methods for engineering design is illustrated via case
studies of chemical process design. Finally this work explores the
utility of
Input-
Output (I/O) models for studying the effect of
sudden shocks and quantifying the associated risks on complex
industrial systems. Economic
Input-
Output (EIO) models have been
used for various purposes such as studying the effect of changes in
final demand, taxes, and other economic changes. Models based on
the EIO
model have also been developed for life cycle assessment by
combining the EIO
model with data about emissions and resource
consumption. We are using the Ecologically-based LCA
model to
understand the impact of changes in the availability of natural
resources including natural capital. This includes understanding
the potential impact of loss of services such as pollination, water
scarcities, and soil fertility. The approach is suitable for
modeling the effect of sudden perturbations such as resource
shortage on the complex industrial systems and identifying
industrial sectors with greatest sensitivity to a given
perturbation. Methodologically, this work complements existing
biophysical methods such as LCA…

▼ The total value of goods and services traded between rural and urban Oklahoma is estimated around 7.42 billion in 2008. Rural Oklahoma supplied urban Oklahoma with basic ag commodities while urban Oklahoma furnished rural Oklahoma with higher order goods and services. Both regions are more interconnected with the rest of the US and the world than they are with each other. Using the same rural-urban framework, the impact of 68.5 million direct and counter-cyclical payments to rural farmers was determined. The inter-regional effect of this shock to the urban economies is only 6%, 9%, and 6% of the total rural and urban impact on employment, labor income and value added respectively.

▼ In this study IMPLAN 2009 economic data, CEDA 4.41 environmental data and other data sources are used to determine the economic and environmental impact associated with switchgrass based ethanol production in Oklahoma. The previous land uses for crop and cattle production have been compared with projected increases in switchgrass and ethanol production to determine the net economic and environmental impacts to provide a basis for local communities to appropriately assess the tradeoffs. Given the model's assumptions, the results suggest that cellulosic ethanol production using Oklahoma grown switchgrass would result in more than 3,000 jobs, almost 250 million in value-added, and over 430 million in output to the state's economy if nine plants, each producing 50 million gallons of ethanol per year, were operational. However, switchgrass based ethanol production would increase most of the greenhouse gas emissions in the state except methane (CH4). Criteria pollutant and VOC emissions will also increase with cellulosic ethanol production. Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxide (NOX), nitrous oxide and particulate matter (PM10 and PM25) are found to be the major pollutants. This implies that switchgrass and ethanol production contribute to environmental degradation. Thus, the decision to pursue switchgrass and ethanol production depends on a local community's priority of economic gains or environmental quality.

▼ With stagnating growth rates among a majority of its members, soaring unemployment figures and an increased risk of deflation, the economic conditions of the European economy do not strongly reflect a stronger and more united Europe as was intended by the monetary unification in 2001. On the contrary, the recent painstaking negotiations between Greece and its bailout creditors pushed Greece on the brink of leaving the Eurozone and seriously questioned the sustainability of the European monetary union.
This research is an attempt to shed new light on the structural evolution of the main Eurozone economies in the years leading up to and following the monetary unification by means of a detailed data analysis using the recently released World
Input-
Output Database and adopting an inter-country
input-
output model. This database offers many insights in the productive structures of economies as well as the international interrelatedness in productive and demand structures. By empirically getting an appraisal on both the historal evolution and current structure of the Eurozone’s economy, this thesis furthermore aims at providing new lines of thought to the European policy makers in their search for industrial policy solutions to reduce the macro-economic imbalances and achieve a sustained recovery of the Eurozone economy.
The first part of our findings basically all support the overall message that a substantial economic restructuring among the main Eurozone countries has been taking place in the last two decades. We collected various structural insights which all to a greater or lesser extent point out that the monetary unification in 2001 reinforced a process of structural divergence between mainly Germany and the peripheral, or Southern European, economies both in terms of their productive and trade structures and reflected on the surface by a growing divergence between their overall current account balances. Germany has gradually been intensifying its technological capabilities by building up a strong comparative advantage in the production and export of high and medium-high technology manufacturing goods, while the periphery has been technologically stagnant and got locked-up in specializing in low and medium-low tech manufacturing industries as well as several non-traded industries including construction and tourism to name just a few.
The second part addresses the important question on how to deal with this structural problem, by presenting several broad policy suggests and lines of thought substantiated by empirical and theoretical arguments. These scenario’s include: laissez-faire (let the process happen without strongly interfering), introduce a Eurozone central fiscal stabilization mech- anism, and try to exploit intra-Eurozone trade spillovers. Especially this last scenario is care- fully empirically examined for the year 2011, the most recent year in the World
Input-
Output Database. A two-folded conclusion can be drawn from this analysis. Firstly, a ‘coordinated Eurozone-level domestic demand-led strategy’ (by…

▼ Each CAP reform has caused effects which are not limited to a sector, but they affect the entire rural sector and the entire regional economy. These more general effects most times however, are either not taken into consideration or they are underestimated. Thus, the last CAP reform constitutes an excellent opportunity for both estimating such effects and also developing the methodologies applied. The primary target of this work is to estimate of impacts in the rural sector and in the regional economy from the last CAP reform. For this purpose three methodological procedures were selected and applied, the Input-Output Model (I-O), the Extended Demographic Economic Input-Output Model and the Social Accounting Matrix (SAM). These methodologies were applied in the regional economy of a NUTS II, mainly rural region of Anatoliki Makedonia and Thraki. The results demonstrated that the new CAP reform has fulfilled its most important objectives that are the financial and social support of rural and less developed regions combined with the environmental preservation. As it was calculated, the agricultural sector will undergo a significant employment increase. This sector along with the food beverages and tobacco and the constructions sectors are among the most important and dynamic economic sectors in terms of employment, income and product, in the region. Accordingly, the regional development policies should be focused in those sectors that will lead the regional economy and society to a better economic and social position, taking into consideration all the regional characteristics.

▼ The objectives of this study are (1) to develop an efficient variable screening method for reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) and (2) to develop a new RBDO method incorporated with the confidence level for limited
input data problems. The current research effort involves: (1) development of a partial
output variance concept for variable screening; (2) development of an effective variable screening sequence; (3) development of estimation method for a confidence level of a reliability
output; and (4) development of a design sensitivity method for the confidence level. In the RBDO process, surrogate models are frequently used to reduce the number of simulations because analysis of a simulation
model takes a great deal of computational time. On the other hand, to obtain accurate surrogate models, we have to limit the dimension of the RBDO problem and thus mitigate the curse of dimensionality. Therefore, it is desirable to develop an efficient and effective variable screening method for reduction of the dimension of the RBDO problem. In this study, it is found that
output variance is critical for identifying important variables in the RBDO process. A partial
output variance, which is an efficient approximation method based on the univariate dimension reduction method (DRM), is proposed to calculate
output variance efficiently. For variable screening, the variables that has larger partial
output variances are selected as important variables. To determine important variables, hypothesis testing is used so that possible errors are contained at a user-specified error level. Also, an appropriate number of samples is proposed for calculating the partial
output variance. Moreover, a quadratic interpolation method is studied in detail to calculate
output variance efficiently. Using numerical examples, performance of the proposed variable screening method is verified. It is shown that the proposed method finds important variables efficiently and effectively. The reliability analysis and the RBDO require an exact
input probabilistic
model to obtain accurate reliability
output and RBDO optimum design. However, often only limited
input data are available to generate the
input probabilistic
model in practical engineering problems. The insufficient
input data induces uncertainty in the
input probabilistic
model, and this uncertainty forces the RBDO optimum to lose its confidence level. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the reliability
output, which is defined as the probability of failure, to follow a probability distribution. The probability of the reliability
output is obtained with consecutive conditional probabilities of
input distribution type and parameters using the Bayesian approach. The approximate conditional probabilities are obtained under reasonable assumptions, and Monte Carlo simulation is applied to practically calculate the probability of the reliability
output. A confidence-based RBDO (C-RBDO) problem is formulated using the derived probability of the reliability
output. In the C-RBDO…

▼ Abstract
This study analyses the significance of goods production and services to regional employment. As a part of this study, a regional input-output model has been created in which the employment of different industries is determined by their own and each others’ final demand, the productivity of the labour input and the production-income-consumption dependencies of the industries. In the empirical results attention is mainly paid on the changes to the employment structure in 2002 and the subsequent five-year period.
Four Finnish provinces were represented in this study: Northern Ostrobothnia, Kainuu, Lapland and Uusimaa. The specialisation of the regions causes differences both in the structure and the development of their employment. Of the regions, focus has been primarily on Northern Ostrobothnia, which has specialised strongly in the manufacture of electronic products during the last two decades. In Kainuu and Lapland, the main industries are primary production, basic manufacturing industries and public services. In Uusimaa, where private services are concentrated, the production basis is clearly different from the northern provinces.
In all four regions, exports and public consumption have together maintained approximately 80 per cent of the employment in 2002. In Northern Ostrobothnia, exports of electronic products are significant to employment in the service industry as well. The significance of public consumption is greatest in Kainuu and Lapland. In Uusimaa, private services play a central part in employment. A total of one-fifth of the employment in all these regions is maintained by gross capital formation and the exogenous consumption of private households. The income basis of this consumption consists of pensions, unemployment benefits and other transfers of income, the significance of which is greatest in small provinces.
Final demand is a central factor in the future development of employment, so its regional prospects should be taken into consideration in the economic policy. In strong, export-oriented regions, background support for companies and counter-cyclical measures might be sufficient. In small and peripheral provinces, continuous and extensive activity is needed for maintaining sufficient demand. The common goal should be to reinforce the production and income basis of the region.
Tutkimuksen tuloksissa on…

This work developed a model for long run forecasting the demand for fuels in Brazil based on the integration of a time series econometric model with a hybrid input-output model. The data used to estimate the econometric model were the annual time series of of final demand components (GDP, household consumption, investment, exports, government spends and imports) produced by the System of National Accounts of the IBGE. The development of the hybrid input-output module made use of the national input-output matrix of Brazil for the year 2005, estimated by IBGE, and the data on petroleum derivatives (gasoline, diesel oil, combustible oil and alcohol, measured in tep) consumption available in the National Energy Balance of 2008. In the construction of the econometric model, it was verified that the time series in addition to not being stationary are also cointegrated. Thus, Vector Error Correction models were estimated for the original variables and, in an alternative version, for those variables transformed in log. To select the best model, a predictive test was performed on the models for years 2004 to 2007 and the conclusion was that the model with variables in log presented the best performance. ▼ A novel
input-
output model of water quality in water
distribution systems is presented as a particle (water parcel)
backtracking algorithm (PBA). The PBA is a simpler and more
efficient version of that described by Zierolf et al. and is
extended to allow storage tanks and multiple water sources and
quality inputs. For simplicity the algorithm details are described
for networks with a single water quality
input at the water source,
and the necessary extensions to allow multiple water sources and
quality inputs are described separately. The PBA provides
information that is not available using traditional simulation
approaches: the various paths that water takes between a particular
input source and
output node, and their associated time delays and
impact on
output node water quality. Such information constitutes a
complete description of the
input-
output behavior under typical
assumptions of first-order chemical decay or production reactions.
Thus the
output behavior can be calculated for any source quality
input, and the explicit mathematical form of the
input-
output
behavior is useful information for certain applications such as
feedback control. More generally, the PBA is a tool to understand
flow path-dependent water quality processes in distribution
systems, since those paths and their characteristics are made
explicit and thus available for analysis. The potential utility of
input-
output analysis is illustrated by several examples and the
application of
input-
output model in estimating chlorine pipe wall
decay coefficient is studied in details.

▼ Abstract
Background: Emergency department (ED) overcrowding has become a significant problem throughout the large medical centers, leading to possible threatened medical quality, causing raised stress levels among staff and patients in EDs, and most importantly, adversely affecting patient outcomes. Due to its complexity, a large concerted group effort will be needed to increase awareness, implement proposed solutions, and make a change. ED overcrowding is a multifaceted problem that will require a multifaceted solution.
Methods: We set up the "
Input-Throughput-
Output"
model provides a structure for examining the factors that affect ED access, quality and outcomes. Using this
model, we clarify the issues of ED overcrowding into three stages, propose ways to obtain needed information in each stage, test the strategies and then evaluate their outcomes. We utilized the analytic hierarchy process (APH) method to measure the weights of the physicianâs stress and arrange more efficacious and flexible duties accordingly.
Results: This is a prospective study investigating ED overcrowding at this medical center from January 2008 through December 2009. Hospitals developed and implemented a number of best practices revolved around patient flow initiatives, specifically looking to improve
input, throughput, and
output.
Conclusion: This study suggests that a decrease in ED overcrowding can be achieved through ongoing collaboration of the indicators and the implementation of best practices via the
Input-Throughput-
Output model.

▼ According to the literature, R&D investments in the pharmaceutical industry do not corresponds equally to the number of developed new drugs. The literature indicates that companies do large acquisitions or merge in order to maintain their positions in the top of the industry and compensate the lack of innovative drugs in their pipeline.
The main goal of the first part of this research was to discover to what extent the pharmaceutical companies are in control over their R&D programmes. This was not investigated until know. A lack of control over their R&D programmes could be a cause of the lack of new drugs in their pipeline. If the companies appeared to have full control over their pipelines, the cause of the problem must be searched somewhere else.
The first main research question investigated the control that large pharmaceutical companies have of their own R&D activities and the drugs and disease areas that are present in their pipeline. Therefore, a research population of six large pharmaceutical companies are investigated by means of archival analysis. The main research question was:
What are the differences between the initial new drug R&D strategies and plans and the new drugs that appeared in the pipeline of large pharmaceutical companies in the period 2000 until 2009?
The conclusion of the first main research question was that none of the six investigated companies was able to realise all its ambitions regarding to new drug development and served disease areas. In other words, the companies did not have full control over their pipelines. However, it appeared that transactions of knowledge and technologies are part of daily routines in for pharmaceutical companies. The border between daily routines to maintain the own competitive position, and attempts to compensate inefficiency and failures at the own R&D department is unknown.
The results of the first part show that a framework to investigate which factor influence the success of new drug R&D programmes was needed. Such a framework was not available in the literature so far. Therefore, the second part of this research investigated which factors influenced the success of the R&D programmes. A conceptual framework, based on the Five Phases
model of Tidd (et al, 2001) and the Resource Based view of Barney (1991) was developed. In order to refine the conceptual framework, interviews with very experienced employees at three of the six investigated companies were conducted. The central research question was:
What was the influence of the ‘ability to provide resources effectively’, ‘the ability to implement technology’, ‘dynamic capabilities’, and ‘possession of strategic resources’ on the success of new drug R&D programmes?
Based on the analysis of the answers of the three conducted interviews it can be stated that each of the factors that are named in the second main research question contribute positively to the success of new drug R&D programmes at the investigated large pharmaceutical companies. However, the analysis of the answers on the…

▼ This dissertation consists of three essays on trade and production sharing.Chapter 1 analyzes the value added content of bilateral trade. In this chapter, Robert Johnson and I combine input-output and bilateral trade data to compute the ratio of value added to gross exports (VAX ratio), which is a measure of the intensity of production sharing. We find that across countries, export composition drives VAX ratios, with exporters of Manufactures having lower ratios. Across sectors, the VAX ratio for Manufactures is low relative to Services, primarily because Services are used as an intermediate to produce manufacturing exports. Across bilateral partners, VAX ratios vary widely and contain information on both bilateral and triangular production chains. We find that bilateral production linkages, not variation in the composition of exports, drives variation in bilateral VAX ratios. Finally, bilateral imbalances measured in value added differ from gross trade imbalances. Most prominently, the U.S.-China imbalance in 2004 is 30-40% smaller when measured in value added.Chapter 2 studies how international trade flows respond to changes in trade costs. An extensive literature uses gravity equations to estimate the trade cost elasticity of trade flows. This chapter shows that the standard estimation of the gravity equation is biased because it ignores that a large share of international trade is in intermediate rather than final goods. Final and intermediate goods trade flows respond differently to changes in trade costs and not distinguishing between them leads to an underestimation of the overall trade cost elasticity in absolute value of 39% on average. The magnitude of the bias is strongly correlated with the degree of production sharing: countries whose imports contain relatively low value added from the direct exporter have relatively large negative biases; that is, their true trade cost elasticity is significantly larger in absolute value than when not accounting for production sharing.Chapter 3 explores the evolution and determinants of production sharing patterns and trade costs over 1995-2005. Following the methodology from Chapter 1, I construct a panel dataset of annual bilateral value added flows for 39 countries and a rest of the world region and eight sectors. I show that the VAX ratio declined by 8% on average between 1995 and 2005, and that this is mostly due to an increase in production sharing in the manufacturing sector. I derive micro-founded, comprehensive measures of bilateral trade costs for final and intermediate goods and show that both types of trade costs decreased steadily over the period, with intermediate goods trade costs being significantly lower than final goods trade costs. I also find evidence that intermediate goods trade costs are less responsive to free trade agreements and tariffs, suggesting that hard-to-measure trade costs such as communication and coordination costs are an important determinant.

▼ This thesis examines the economic impact of two alternative canning plant sizes in Scott County, Virginia. The impacts of a community cannery as well as a commercial cannery are analyzed with respect to changes in
output, employment, and income. Several uses for the commercial cannery are considered, such as specialization in different product categories. In both cases, an
input-
output model is used to evaluate the effects of the operation of the cannery in the county.
The results indicate that the impact of the commercial cannery is significantly larger than the community cannery. Specialization of the commercial cannery in the Canned Specialties sector has the largest impact with respect to industry
output and labor income while specialization in the Sausages and Other Prepared Meats sector has the largest impact with respect to employment.

▼ Population growth and climate change have brought water disputes to the southeastern United States. To achieve sustainable water use of the region’s water resources and to alleviate future water stress, it is important to determine 1) current water quantity used to support regional economic activities, and 2) the economic value of water in the southeastern U.S. This thesis has three objectives: 1) build a Multi-Regional
Input-
Output (MRIO)
model to describe multiregional transactions for the following analyses; 2) conduct a water footprint analysis to evaluate how much water use is required for meeting changes in final demand of specific region and economic sectors; 3) set up an MRIO Linear Programming (MRIO-LP) to determine water use demand curves for the southeastern U.S.
The water footprint analysis indicates that water requirements embedded in the production of a good varies across study region. The MRIO-LP analysis reveals that economic transactions between regions have a significant impact on the water used to meet regional economic demand. The shadow value of water is higher when multi-regional transactions are introduced into the LP
model. In general, the southeastern U.S. economy is less likely to experience water stress until the water availability decrease to 60% of the 2010 USGS level of 82,825,409 acre feet. At this level, the aggregated industry price for water in the southeastern U.S. ranges between 4,041 /ac.ft. to 5,614 /ac.ft., depending on assumptions pertaining to inter-regional transactions.

▼ As Indonesian government is planning to increase production and export of manufacturing products through tax break that improve human capital to escape from the middle-income trap, this thesis aims to investigate the effect of manufacturing export and tax break on manufacturing sectors to income inequality and trade balance. Using IRSAM in 2008 between Indonesia and the Rest of the World, we found that trade overall does not necessarily improve income distribution. This thesis also counters the report by Ministry of National Planning Development that suggest promoting manufacturing sector through tax break. Promoting manufacturing sectors through tax break can only produce positive result both on income distribution and trade balance under extremely restrictive conditions, which are that government has to implement selective financing scheme, and that the manufacturing firms has to translate the received-tax-break by increasing the productivity of unskilled labor only. Under a more-realistic assumption, in which firms respond the tax break policy by adjusting their investment level, we found that tax break on agriculture or food industry, financed by mining sector promotes both equality and efficiency issues at the same time. The use of foreign loan will worsen trade balance, generating inferior results compare to domestic financing, or running constant government budget. Secondly, we also show that improving labor productivity abruptly without targeting will deprive income distribution, as the consumption pattern between skilled and unskilled labor affects the inter-linkages from labor income to household welfare. At the end of this thesis, we provide policy recommendations based on the analysis, which is to target tax break to agriculture sector and food industry and focus on improving productivity of agriculture labor and manual labor of food industry.

▼ Complex modern systems, from unmanned aircraft system to industrial plants are almost always controlled digitally. These digital control systems (DCSes) need to be verified for correctness since failures can have disastrous consequences. However, proving that a DCS will always act correctly can be infeasible if the system is too complex. In addition, with the growth of inter-connectivity of systems through the internet, malicious actors have more access than ever to attempt to cause these systems to deviate from their proper operation. This thesis seeks to solve these problems by introducing a new architecture for DCSes that uses isolated components that can be verified for correctness. In addition, safety monitors are implemented as a part of the architecture to prevent unsafe operation.

Over the years, as we all know, we have witnessed several changes in the geography of world trade. Countries of production and destination of goods were up changing over time, as well as the way goods are produced, while initially were produced almost entirely in one country today is no longer so.
The target of this research is the sector of transport equipment, a choice which was due largely to the fact that nowadays, four of the major vehicles brands have industries in Portugal, the Peugeot-Citroën, in Mangualde, the Volkswagen, in Palmela, the Mitsubishi, in Tramagal, and the Toyota, in Ovar, representing nearly 100% of the output of this sector in Portugal.
This study involves the detailed analysis of the changes in the international trade of the transport equipment sector in Europe, giving particular attention to Portugal, and having as main objectives to understand which countries have been gaining importance and to where has gone and how has been fragmented the production of this sector goods.

▼ The Waikato region is home to approximately 16% of New Zealand’s total population, and is the country’s fourth largest regional economy. The region contributes 9.1% of the nation’s GDP and 10% of New Zealand exports. The industries which are most important to the Waikato region are dairy farming, electricity generation and distribution, mining and quarrying, forestry and logging, and education and research services. The University of Waikato has been contributing to the Waikato regional economy since 1964. It employs 2000 staff and has 13,000 enrolled students. Of the University’s domestic students, 74% come from the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions. Thus the University creates employment for residents and attracts students from both within and outside the Waikato region. The expenditure of students in the region creates wealth for local businesses and other flow on effects, resulting in higher regional GDP. It is because of this influx of students into the region that the University provides the local economy with additional wealth. Thus there is motivation to further investigate the economic contribution of the University to the Waikato region’s economy. The main objectives of this study were to quantify the economic contribution of the University of Waikato to the Waikato region. By building a single region
input-
output model it can be seen how great an impact the University has on the Waikato region. Details of local student spending were ascertained to allow multiplier effects to be determined. The larger these multiplier effects, the more valuable the University is to the local economy. This study adds to the current academic literature on this
subject, and also gives a more detailed understanding of a University’s role within its local economy. This is because it includes not only the direct impacts of the University’s and its students’ activities, but also the indirect flow-on effects. The methods this paper used to construct an
input-
output table for the Waikato region were to create a national
input-
output table from the 2007 supply and use tables for New Zealand using the industry technology method. This table was then downsized to portray the Waikato region using an augmented GRIT method, which allowed for the inclusion of superior data into the table. The resulting
input-
output table was then used to conduct an impact analysis of the University of Waikato on its local economy. This paper has used
input-
output analysis to show that the University of Waikato is important to the Waikato Region both in its contribution to regional GDP and in the benefits it provides to the community such as the use of the University grounds and higher-skilled labour force it brings. The University contributes 3.4% of the Waikato Region’s GDP and provides employment both directly through its delivery of services and indirectly through its operations and spending of staff and students. If the University were to close it would have a significant negative impact both on regional GDP and more intangible losses to its local…

▼ Oklahoma, being a major agricultural based state, will have the opportunity to become a large contributor to the production of alternative energy sources such as cellulosic ethanol from switchgrass. The goal of this study is to measure the economic impacts of switchgrass production for cellulosic biomass and the operation of cellulosic ethanol plants in Oklahoma. Utilizing results from a comprehensive linear mathematical programming
model the locations for cellulosic ethanol plants and switchgrass production areas were found for nine different scenarios. With information on optimal plant locations and switchgrass production areas IMPLAN study area data and industry accounts are edited to show how the two activities will impact the study area. Also with a large agricultural cooperative presence in Oklahoma the
model will show how different management practices such as coop owned vs. private ownership will affect the study area. In scenario one, for single plant additional impact assessments made for varying levels of cooperative and private ownership. By retaining plant profits in the region through cash patronage to producer owners cooperative ownership was measured for 50% cooperative ownership and 100% cooperative ownership. For the 100% privately owned no profits are retained in the region. For the 100% privately owned scenario there is a combined industry
output for switchgrass production and ethanol production of 70 million, and a combined employment impact of 556 employees for the region. In the 100% cooperative owned scenario there is a combined industry
output for switchgrass production and ethanol production of 86.1 million, and a combined employment impact of 726 employees in the region. Because of the induced impacts that result from the cooperative membership
model industry
output is 16.1 million higher than the privately owned and employment has 170 more jobs. In all other scenarios private equity ownership is assumed with the establishment of a single plant in the state and the switchgrass production area of only eight counties to supply it a combined economic impact for industry
output of 70 million and an employment impact of 556 jobs from the two activities. In the ninth scenario switchgrass production and ethanol production have a combined industry
output impact of 728.9 million and the total employee impact is 6,132. From the range of industry
output and employment from scenarios one through nine the results show that the production of switchgrass for cellulosic ethanol production will have a large economic impact on the state of Oklahoma.

▼ Heterogeneity in economic agents has long been one of the major discussion points in both theoretical and applied fields of economics. Particularly for regional economists focusing on macroeconomic models at the subnational level, it is of foremost importance to take into account heterogeneity of agents in regional economic models, generally used for the mid- and long-term forecasting and policy evaluation, considering the effects of time-varying socio-economic characteristics such as aging population and income inequality on simulations. Despite recent methodological advances in econometrics, modelling heterogeneity of agents for smaller regions is still a major challenge to overcome mainly due to lack of rich data. This dissertation focuses on (1) developing regional econometric models disaggregated by age and income of agents and (2) integrating the disaggregated models to existing regional macroeconomic models. Although the most typical regional models, econometric/
input-
output models, are illustrated as the examples of regional macro models, it is expected that the proposed integration strategies can be extended without difficulty to other modelling framework as well.
In Chapter 1, I proposes an extension to the regional econometric input–
output model (REIM; Conway, 1990; Israilevich et al., 1997) to which a demand system with age and income parameters is integrated. The extended
model addresses concerns about household heterogeneity that has been limited to one representative in the existing REIMs. The initial testing is conducted with a
model for the Chicago metropolitan area. First, using aggregate expenditure data by income and age groups, the almost ideal demand system (AIDS) with group fixed effects is constructed. Next, the estimated demand system is linked to the REIM to reflect long-term changes in the age and income distribution of households. The long-range simulation from the extended
model takes into account structural changes in expenditure type stemming from changing demographic composition. The extended
model further broadens the scope of impact analysis under various scenarios associated with age and income changes.
In Chapter 2, drawing on a modified regional econometric
input-
output model (REIM) for the Chicago metropolitan region in which households were disaggregated by age, I provide an assessment of the differences generated by consumption of a representative and disaggregated households using data at the corresponding level of aggregation. The results reveal that the total effects of disaggregation that can be ascribed to population aging vary by a much smaller extent than those generated by
model specification and data. The disaggregate REIM with heterogeneous households by age yields smaller RMSEs than the aggregate REIM with a representative household, but a statistical testing suggests that forecasting gains from disaggregation are modest compared to the aggregate
model.
In Chapter 3, I integrate an age-group-specific labor demand
model into a regional
input-
output model to…

▼ This dissertation consists of three essays exploring specific issues in international trade.
The first chapter studies how disaggregated
input-
output interactions shape trade and welfare responses to changes in trade costs. I develop a
model with a large number of products linked through a general "snakes and spiders" network. The central feature of the
model which also makes it highly intractable is endogenous formation of comparative advantage. To overcome this complexity challenge, I obtain a perturbation solution in terms of intuitive summary statistics. I find that, in contrast to the composite intermediate good structure often employed in the literature, imperfect supplier diversification transforms fundamental comparative advantage in two ways. First, as exogenous productivity differences accumulate along supply chains, endogenous variation in relative costs is increasing in the level of trade frictions. Second, the comparative advantage of upstream and downstream industries becomes positively correlated. The first effect generates larger welfare gains from trade and also raises the average product-level import share. The second effect, however, is trade-reducing: the tendency of comparative-advantage industries to source disproportionately from each other increases aggregate home bias.
The second chapter links the growth of trade to structural transformation in the major economies over the last several decades which have seen steadily declining manufacturing employment. I find that, under increasing returns, falling employment in manufacturing amplifies comparative advantage forces relative to trade barriers, specialization deepens to offset losses in scale in the marginal industries, and trade increases. I establish this result in a
model based on Dornbusch, Fischer, and Samuelson (1977) to which I add exogenously nontraded services and fixed costs in manufacturing.
The third chapter studies optimal trade policy in the presence of intermediate goods. I consider a multi-industry two-stage production economy where both final and intermediate products are traded and the available policy instruments include all import and export tariffs. Import taxes for intermediate goods are uniform, while other instruments are heterogeneous, responding to variation in
model parameters. I find that stronger international production sharing reduces optimal import tariffs but increases optimal export taxes.

The concern on environmental impacts and the search for climate change mitigation have led many countries on the run to accelerate the development and the deployment of renewable energy technologies. Among those, wind power was recently the most successful technology, having achieved a growth of almost 15 times between 2000 and 2011. The adoption of incentive policies, especially those based on subsides, has led to the discussion of social and environmental benefits brought by this technology, focusing efforts on the assessment of the impacts on employment levels. Several studies have been made to quantify job creation by renewable energy technologies, and the main conclusion has been that they…

▼ Most of industrial processes are basically
Multi-Input/Multi- newlineOutput (MIMO) systems. The implementation
of control algorithms for such newlineMIMO systems is often
complicated due to variations in process dynamics newlinethat occur
because of change in operating point and nonlinear dynamic
newlinecoupling. To solve this problem there exist several control
schemes that can newlinebe centralized (multivariable structure) or
decentralised (multi-loop structure). newlineWith the increasing
automation and complexity of modern process control newlinesystem,
the design of decoupling based decentralised PID control, Fuzzy
newlinecontrol and Dynamic matrix control are becoming an
interesting and newlinechallenging research topic. In this work, an
attempt is made to design real coded GA tuned newlinecentralized
and decentralised feedback controllers using regime based Multi
newlineModel Adaptive Control (MMAC) strategy for Two Conical Tank
Interacting newlineLevel System (TCTILS). TCTILS is a Two Input Two
Output (TITO) system newlinewhich exhibits nonlinear and coupling
dynamics. newlineThus, the main contributions of the present
investigation include newlinethe following: 1. Development of first
principle model for TCTILS newline2. Design and development of
regime based MMAC strategy for newlineAdaptive Decoupling based
Decentralised PI (ADD-PI) control newlinescheme and Non Adaptive
Decoupling based Decentralised PI newline(NADD-PI) control scheme.
3. Design and development of regime based MMAC strategy for
newlineAdaptive Mixed Fuzzy control (AMFC) scheme and Adaptive
newlineTraditional Fuzzy control (ATFC) scheme. newline4. Design
and development of regime based MMAC strategy for newlineGain
Scheduling Adaptive Dynamic Matrix control (GSADMC) newlinescheme
and Nonlinear Dynamic Matrix control newline(NDMC) scheme.
newline5. Real time implementation of the proposed GSA-DMC and
newlineNDMC schemes on a TCTILS, a benchmark setup for the
newlinenonlinear two tank level process with interaction.
Accordingly, the thesis consists of seven chapters. Chapter 1 deals
newlinewith the need and scope of the present work, organization of
the thesis along newlinewith the related literature survey.

▼ In this thesis, we study the time-varying channel estimation problem for multiple-
input multiple-
output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Resorting to complex exponential basis expansion
model (CE-BEM), the time-varying channel in OFDM systems is modeled as a doubly-selective matrix which can be represented by the BEM coefficients. In high mobile environment, the BEM coefficients remain as constant in an OFDM block and are slightly changed in adjacent OFDM block. Therefore, we apply the recursive least-square (RLS) algorithm to track the BEM coefficients. Simulation results show that the proposed method outperforms the conventional RLS block-wise channel estimation, especially for larger range of Doppler spreads systems.
