▼ The present study sought to examine whether
passion for academic activities predicted students’ enjoyment of and performance in an interteaching-based course. Although previous studies have shown interteaching to produce better student-learning outcomes than lecture, few studies have examined factors that predict how students respond to interteaching. Because people who have higher levels of harmonious
passion tend to approach activities in an open and flexible manner, we predicted that harmonious
passion for academic activities would predict increased enjoyment of and performance in an interteaching-based course. In contrast, because people with higher levels of
obsessive passion approach activities in a rigid and inflexible manner, we predicted that
obsessive passion for academic activities would predict less enjoyment and decreased performance in an interteaching-based class. In contrast with our hypotheses, we found that
obsessive passion, but not harmonious
passion, predicted higher mid-semester enjoyment. Neither type of
passion, however, predicted enjoyment at the end of the semester. In addition, harmonious
passion was negatively related to overall course performance.

▼ This dissertation sought to further our understanding of the nature of leadership by developing and investigating a novel construct: a passion for leadership. In Study 1, I developed a dualistic model of a passion for leadership by distinguishing between a harmonious and an obsessive passion for leadership. Harmonious passion for leadership involves an intense, controllable desire to engage in leadership thereby creating a flexible form of persistence. In contrast, obsessive passion for leadership reflects an intense, incessant need to engage in leadership such that activity involvement is considered rigid. Then, across 7 studies involving 9 separate samples, I developed a reliable and valid measure of a passion for leadership, in which the harmonious and obsessive passion for leadership demonstrated internal and temporal stability and manifested content, construct, convergent, discriminant, and concurrent-related validity. Study 2 extended the first study by testing whether the passion for leadership is psychometrically invariant across groups. In particular, I investigated whether the factor structure of the passion for leadership was equivalent across biological sex (male vs. female) and country (USA vs. China). Two separate cross-sectional online surveys were conducted with leaders for each group. The results demonstrated that, for both sex and country, the passion for leadership measure was partially invariant. Based on the dualistic model of a passion for leadership, Study 3 examined whether harmonious and obsessive passion for leadership predict transformational leadership and abusive supervision, respectively. I also investigated the moderating role of gender. Within the context of a laboratory-based experiment, the findings showed that priming harmonious passion for leadership led to higher levels of transformational leadership; in contrast, priming an obsessive passion for leadership had no effect on abusive supervision. Furthermore, gender did not moderate the effects of harmonious or obsessive passion for leadership on either transformational leadership or abusive supervision, respectively. I close this dissertation with a general discussion of the three studies and recommendations for future research.

▼ AbstractProblematic internet use (PIU) is increasingly
becoming a problem in the United States, and ahandful of studies
have found a positive relationship between PIU and flow. These
findings arestriking as flow is generally considered to be an
optimal psychological state. In internet basedstudies flow is a
concept that has been poorly defined and inconsistently measured.
Furthermore, research has suggested that other factors, such as
passion, may influence the relationshipbetween flow and PIU. The
present study examined the possible moderating effect thatobsessive
passion (OP) has on the relationship between particular flow
elements (time distortionand telepresence) and PIU. Past research
has suggested that time distortion and telepresence aremore related
to PIU than other flow elements. Measures assessing these
constructs were given to131 Xavier University students and were
examined using moderated multiple regressionanalyses. These
analyses were non-significant, suggesting that OP does not moderate
therelationship between time distortion/telepresence and PIU.
However, a post hoc analysis didshow that OP does mediate the
relationship between time distortion/telepresence and PIU.
Thesefindings support a model where the relationship between these
flow elements and PIU isexplained by OP. These findings also help
to clarify the discrepant findings on the relationshipbetween flow
and PIU.

Resumo
A base teórica deste estudo teve como principais conceitos a Paixão no Desporto, a Paixão
Harmoniosa (PH) e a Obsessiva (PO) (Vallerand et al., 2003) e a Orientação Motivacional no
Motivacional no Desporto.
Utilizámos a tradução
Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate how the variables passion and anxiety relate to each other, as well as investigate if the type of situation athletes are exposed to (practice vs. game) is of significance for this relation. In the study, 112 athletes between 15-34 years of age (M=20.2, SD=4.3) from ten different sports associations in Halland participated. The participants were measured once right before a practice and once right before a game. The results showed that there was a negative significant correlation between harmonious passion and anxiety prior to practice (r = -.19, p <.05) and game situation (r = -32, p <.01), but showed no positive significant correlation between obsessive passion and anxiety prior to practice (r = .16, p >.05) and game situation (r = .07, p >.05). Furthermore, the results showed that the type of situation had a significant effect on the level of anxiety among the participants (p <.01). The results also showed that there was a significant difference in levels of anxiety depending on the type of passion (p <.01). However, there appeared to be no significant interaction effect between the two groups of passion and the level of anxiety depending on the situation (p >.05). Based on the results of the study, a harmonious passion is desirable, since this seems to be a healthier road toward athletic performance.

▼ Entrepreneurial
passion has been regarded as the heart of business venturing for centuries. Recently, it has been a topic of interest in the academic community. Over the past decades, there has been an increasing number of publications in this area. However, the extant research is relatively large, heterogeneous, and patchy. Yet, little effort has been made to integrate the findings of those studies and assess the current state of the knowledge. Therefore, we are left with a fragmented, rather than a nuanced, holistic understanding of entrepreneurial
passion.
This study aims to conduct a systematic review of the literature on the neglected area of
passion in entrepreneurship. Particularly, it seeks to synthesise the previous academic findings, highlight the research gaps, and proposes future research agenda to extend the body of literature in three aspects: the targets, causes, and consequences of entrepreneurial
passion. The two interrelated research questions are: (1) what has prior research found regarding the targets, causes, and consequences of entrepreneurial
passion?; and (2) what are the future research opportunities regarding the targets, causes, and consequences of entrepreneurial
passion?
In order to achieve the research objectives, a systematic literature review was employed as the research method. A total of 61 peer-reviewed journal articles were obtained from an electronic search in two large international databases (EBSCO and SCOPUS) in a rigorous and systematic manner. In terms of the method for analysing data, this study adopted a thematic synthesis to identify the literature themes and weave them together. It also applied framework synthesis to build a framework of the interrelationships between the targets, causes, and consequences of entrepreneurial
passion.
An analysis of the results of the review suggests that: (1) the targets of entrepreneurs’
passion are directed toward four specific domains: entrepreneurial activities, venture-related objects, stakeholders associated with the firm, and concepts (idea, cause or goal); (2) there are four drivers of entrepreneurial
passion: entrepreneurial education, engagement in entrepreneurship, individual differences, and role models; and (3) entrepreneurial
passion leads to two main consequences: micro (individual) and meso (firm-related) outcomes. Based on these findings, future research avenues to extend and enrich the literature were proposed accordingly.
This research has made several contributions. Theoretically, it provides thematic insights on the targets, causes, and consequences of entrepreneurial
passion, and illustrates the interconnection between these three aspects through a framework. It also identifies gaps and prospective lines of inquiries. Regarding practical contributions, entrepreneurs could learn about the drivers of
passion in order to spark and sustain such feeling throughout their entrepreneurial career. The findings of this review could advance their understanding of the adverse effects of

I studien användes Vealeys Sportconfidence Scale (VSS), Sport Motivation Scale (SMS) och The Passion Scale (PS).
The purpose of the study was to investigate motivationalfactors, passionfactors and level of confidence players among the youth Swedish nationalteam in soccer. Furthermore the relationship between passion and confidence was investigated and also how motiovation is related to passion and confidence. 288 male and female soocer players aged between 15-17 (M=16.02, Sd=1.06) took part of the study. Vealey Sportconfidence Scale (VSS), Sport Motivation Scale (SMS) andThe Passion Scale (PS) was used in the study. The results showed statistically significant relationships between passion, motivation and confidence. The results showed that internal motivational factors was most common in youth national team players and that harmonic passion showed a more significant relationship with confidence than obsessive passion did. Further the results were analyzed and discussed in relation theories and earilier findings. Like all fields of research, further research on a wider population and with larger sample is needed in order to establish any form of conclusions.

▼ Passion is a strong motivational force that has been used to explain humans’ achievements and foibles. This suggests both its importance and its dual nature that was recently categorized into
obsessive passions (OP) and harmonious passions (HP). OP, unlike HP, is known to be associated with adverse psychological wellbeing. Although, many outcome studies on
passion exist, little is known about what contributes to the development of OP, and no study has examined possible strategies to decrease levels of OP or increase levels of HP. Accordingly, the present research examines these questions in the context of OP for studying. In Study 1, parenting style was evaluated as a potential contributor to the development of OP for studying among university students with varying levels of
obsessive passion (n = 253). Perfectionism, achievement goals, burnout, self-compassion, leisure-time satisfaction, and life satisfaction were explored for their mediation effects, and implicit theories of intelligence and sociodemographic characteristics were examined for their moderation effects. Although authoritarian parenting was associated with lower life satisfaction, contrary to what was expected, permissive parenting style was significantly associated with OP, and this relationship was mediated by mastery goal achievement. In Study 2, self-affirmation (SA) essay writing was examined for its helpfulness in transforming OP into HP and in reducing the negativities associated with high OP (Cohen & Sherman, 2014). In a sample of university students whose OP levels were identified as “high” (n = 178), SA writing, compared to control writing, did not establish a healthier balance between HP and OP, nor did it reduce negativities related to OP. The limited findings are contextualized within the domain of studying among university students. Overall, the results suggest that the origins of OP do not rest upon an authoritarian parenting style and that a single dose of SA administration was not efficacious in altering levels of OP and HP. This study, however, nonetheless offers an initial step in the exploration of preventative and treatment strategies for OP. Future research should follow, by shifting the attention of
passion research from outcome studies to the identification of risk factors and interventions.

▼ The aim of this master thesis is to investigate the notion of passion within an entrepreneurial context. Data for this research were obtained through interviews and conversations with entrepreneurs as well as persons who are in a direct relationship with the entrepreneurs. Notably, passion is a multi-faceted conceptualization affecting entrepreneurs throughout their entrepreneurial journey. In order to prevent initial passion from turning into consuming obsession, entrepreneurs are required to nurture and develop their respective passions. This represents a complex undertaking. At the heart of this paper there is a thorough discussion about the three elements of 'the self', 'the business' and 'the people'. The research concludes that it remains inevitable for entrepreneurs to balance their passions between the three aforementioned elements if they want to keep it continuously alive as an enduring source of satisfaction, well-being and happiness.

▼ Media and public opinion have portrayed Australian lawyers as a group rife with psychopathology and behavioural dysfunction. Despite the ubiquity of these views, empirical research on the mental health of lawyers, particularly from a well-being perspective, has been limited. This research examined both psychological distress and well-being aspects of mental health in a diverse sample of 762 Australian lawyers. In study one, the mental health of Australian lawyers was compared with population norms. The relationships between various types of psychological distress with hedonic and eudaimonic well-being was also examined. In study two, Self-Determination Theory was adopted as a critical approach to explore factors influencing lawyer mental health. Lawyers’ passion for work and the extent to which they perceived their managers to be autonomy supportive were examined in relation to well-being at work and mental health. Finally, the extent to which these relationships were mediated by the satisfaction and frustration of the basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness was tested. As predicted, higher levels of well-being were predictive of lower levels of all types of psychological distress. Also as predicted, higher levels of harmonious passion for work was associated with reduced psychological distress and greater well-being both at work and in general. Higher levels of obsessive passion for work, was predictive of higher workplace well-being and psychological distress but was unrelated to overall well-being. Also as predicted, the extent to which lawyers experienced their managers as autonomy supportive was predictive of higher levels of well-being and lower levels of psychological distress. Mediation analysis suggested that well-being in the work domain is critical for the overall mental health of lawyers and the mechanism by which harmonious passion and manager autonomy support influence well-being at work is by satisfying basic psychological needs. These findings add important depth to previous investigations of lawyer well-being by demonstrating the important contribution of previously unexplored individual difference and environmental factors. Strategies that encourage a balanced and positive engagement with work, as well as environments that promote autonomy are most likely to reduce psychological distress and increase well-being among lawyers of all types. Whilst legal professions worldwide rally to tackle a mental health crisis, this research provides evidence for interventions that are likely to be effective at combating cultural issues and to increase flourishing.

Ingen skillnad observerades i övriga prediktorer.
The study aimed to investigate reasons to work overtime among employees without overtime compensation in the staffing and recruitment industry depending on work demands, the place of work in one’s life, internal and external working motivation and harmonious and obsessive passion toward work. The study was conducted as a digital survey sent to 16 companies. QPS Nordic measured work demands, the place of work in one’s life and internal and external working motivation. PTWS measured harmonious and obsessive passion toward work. The present study showed that work demands predicted overtime hours. No difference was observed in the other predictors. The conclusion of the study was that work demands made employees in the staffing and recruitment industry work overtime hours and that employers should pay attention to this regarding the health implications resulting from working overtime.

Genom en kvantitativ forskningsansats fick deltagarna besvara en enkät innefattande mätinstrumenten: Godin Leisure- Time Exercise Questionnaire, The Passion Scale, Drive for muscularity scale.

▼ Perfectionism has been predominantly studied from a
clinical perspective, and has only more recently been studied from
a normative perspective. Luyckx et al. (2008) studied how
personality differences in two facets of perfectionism—adaptive
(striving for improvement) and maladaptive (striving for perfect
performance)—relate to identity formation and well-being. However,
no research has tested adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism
experimentally to show how these two facets of perfectionism affect
task performance and task motivation (i.e., the subjective
experience of the task). In the current study, 78 University of
Dayton participants were surveyed for personality characteristics
relating to perfectionism and motivation and were then randomly
assigned to one of two conditions, one eliciting a motivation for
adaptive perfectionism and another for maladaptive perfectionism.
Results show that participants primed with adaptive instructions
found more solutions than participants primed with maladaptive
instructions on the anagram task but no differences were found on
the creativity test. Finally, personality did not affect
performance; therefore, the interaction between person and
situation was not evaluated.

obsessive passion (Vallerand et al., 2003), and to test two mechanisms that might reduce biased processing. In Study 1, passionate Facebook users indicated their preferences towards a list of article titles, some of which either supported or opposed the use of Facebook. Before reporting their preferences, as a manipulation of self-affirmation, some participants affirmed a self-enhancement value and others affirmed a self-transcendent value. Study 2 was a replication of Study 1, but adopted an experimental design in which
passion types were manipulated using a mindset induction. Participants in Study 3 were passionate hockey fans who, after undergoing the same self-affirmation procedure as Study 1, read an article arguing that their fan support contributed to concussions in the National Hockey League. Study 4 replicated Study 3; however, before reading the article, participants completed a task designed to deplete their ability to apply self-control. The results revealed that people’s responses to these messages were predicted by
passion type. In each study it was harmonious
passion, not
obsessive passion, that predicted biased information processing in terms of higher levels of exposure bias (Studies 1 and 2) and skepticism (Studies 3 and 4) towards
passion-threatening messages. Affirming an important life value attenuated the positive association between harmonious
passion and selective-exposure bias in Study 1, but the positive association between harmonious
passion and skepticism was unaffected by prior self-affirmations (Study 3) or ego-depletion (Study 4). Although previous research has identified
obsessive passion, and not harmonious
passion, as being associated with defensiveness (Vallerand, 2010), the current research demonstrates that in some situations an opposite pattern emerges. This raises the possibility that harmonious
passion may be associated with defensiveness when the target of threat is the correctness of one’s decision to engage in a
passion, rather than one’s ability or opportunity to pursue a
passion-related goal.

▼ Abstract of “Effects of Transcranial Direct Current
Stimulation on Response Inhibition in
Obsessive Compulsive
Disorder” by Justine E.K. Centeno, Sc.M., Brown University, May
2018 Background:
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is
characterized as a neuropsychiatric condition marked by the
presence of obsessions and/or compulsions. Both the personal and
external burden of the disease is tremendous and largely impactful,
with approximately 1/3 of OCD patients unable to work due to their
condition. Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a
non-invasive brain stimulation method in which a weak current is
applied to the brain inducing a local and peripheral neuronal
change. Prior studies have shown that tDCS may improve OCD
symptomatology. Response inhibition is defined as a person’s
ability to inhibit an initiated response and is most commonly
measured using the Stop-signal Task (SST). OCD patients have been
shown to have impairments in response inhibition, measured by the
variable, the Stop-signal Reaction Time (SSRT). In this study, we
investigated the effects of tDCS on response inhibition in OCD.
Methods: Eleven OCD and eleven healthy controls (HC) were included
in this study. The OCD and HC groups underwent a baseline
assessment and MRI. The OCD group then completed 10-20 tDCS
sessions of cathodal tDCS to the pSMA/dACC and anodal stimulation
to the right cheek, succeeded by a follow-up assessment and MRI.
Results: There was no statistically significant different in SSRT
between OCD participants and HC at baseline, or pre- vs. post-tDCS
in OCD participants. There was also no correlation between change
in SSRT and clinical outcomes. Conclusion: Our results differed
from prior literature, which has demonstrated that SSRT is impaired
in OCD patients. Our findings indicate that response inhibition, as
measured by the SSRT, may not be central to OCD expression. For the
future, analysis of fMRI data in a larger randomized double-blinded
study may be useful.

Constantly published, of the end of the XVIIIth century until 1880s, Mrs Cottin's works had an enormous success at the time of their publication. Translated into seven languages, the works of this novelist assured her, under the First Empire and the Restoration, a reputation comparable to that of Chateaubriand and Mrs de Staël. Nevertheless, the moments of glory were followed, from 1889, by wide eclipses even of a profound oversight. This contrast, between a prodigious reputation and an almost total oversight, arouses a moment of reflection and gives the envy to go through the sentimental writing of this writer who was able to make " beat the heart of our grandmothers ".The object of this thesis is to become known better Sophie Cottin and to look at the same time for the factors of the success and the causes of the oversight in which fell this novelist. This thesis constitutes, in this sense, a rehabilitation and a tribute to a woman who collaborated in the success of the sensitive novel and who should find her place among the biggest romantic writers.

▼ The dual model of
passion asserts that
passion can be harmonious or
obsessive depending on how the passionate activity is internalized into one’s identity (Vallerand, et al., 2003). The purpose of the study was to explore the relationship between expert coaches’
passion for coaching and their performance, health and ability to balance coach and family demands from the perspective of the expert coaches and their partner. The participants in this study were expert coaches working with national team members (i.e., those competing at the Olympics/Paralympics and/or World Championships) and their partners. To create sustainable coaching performance, coaching environments should protect coaches from the negative side effects of
obsessive passion through effective planning for recovery. The partner results indicated coach partners are key to coach performance and fully committed to the performance of the expert coach. Further study should examine interventions that protect coaches from the negative outcomes of
obsessive passion.

▼ The purpose of this study was to examine the cognitive and neuropsychological constructs that are conceptually related to poor insight in
obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The relationship between dimensions of insight (Brown Assessment of Beliefs Scale; BABS) and cognitive (magical thinking, paranoia/suspiciousness), metacognitive (metacognition, decentering, cognitive flexibility), and neuroopsychological indices of cognitive flexiblity were examined. Participants with OCD (N = 80) referred for treatment at an outpatient anxiety disorders clinic completed a clinical interview, a brief battery of neuropsychological measures, and a computer-administered questionnaire package assessing the variables of interest. Lower metacognition (i.e., Beck Cognitive Insight Scale [BCIS], composite score) was significantly associated with poorer insight (BABS total; ρ = -.38), and Metacognitions Questionnaire-30 cognitive self-consciousness subscale was negatively correlated with insight regarding a psychiatric source for one’s symptoms (ρ = -.24). Stroop interference was the only neuropsychological variable associated with BABS total score (ρ = -.23), but was not a unique predictor of insight in a regression with BCIS composite scores predicting insight. Nearly all of the variance in insight was accounted for by BCIS composite scores (R = .43, R2 = .18), indicating that metacognition, but not cognitive flexibility, contributes most strongly to clinical insight. Finally, insight decreased when OCD symptoms were activated for both the good and poor insight groups, F(1,78) = 119.29, p < .001, partial η2 = .61, and did not significantly vary as a function of insight group status, F(1, 78) = 3.24, p = .08, partial η2 = .04. Implications, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed.

▼ Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic, disabling condition with inadequate treatment options that leave most patients with substantial residual symptoms. Structural, neurochemical, and behavioral findings point to a significant role for basal ganglia circuits and for the glutamate system in OCD. Genetic linkage and association studies in OCD point to SLC1A1, which encodes the neuronal glutamate/aspartate/cysteine transporter EAAT3/EAAC1. Despite this, no previous studies have investigated EAAT3 in basal ganglia circuits or in relation to OCD-related behavior. Here, we report a new model of Slc1a1 loss based on an excisable STOP cassette that yields successful ablation of EAAT3 expression and function. Using amphetamine as a probe, we found that EAAT3 loss prevents expected increases in 1) locomotor activity, 2) stereotypy, and 3) immediate early gene induction in the dorsal striatum following amphetamine administration. Further, Slc1a1-STOP mice showed diminished grooming in an SKF-38393 challenge experiment, a pharmacologic model of OCD-like grooming behavior. This is accompanied by reduced D1 receptor binding in the dorsal striatum of Slc1a1-STOP mice. Slc1a1-STOP mice also exhibit reduced extracellular dopamine concentrations both at baseline and following amphetamine challenge in the dorsal striatum. Viral-mediated restoration of Slc1a1/EAAT3 expression in the midbrain but not in the striatum results in partial rescue of amphetamine induced locomotion and stereotypy in Slc1a1-STOP mice, consistent with an impact of EAAT3 loss on pre-synaptic dopaminergic function. Collectively, these findings represent the first indication that the most consistently associated OCD candidate gene impacts basal ganglia-dependent repetitive behaviors.

▼ Hoarding disorder is a complex clinical diagnosis which not only affects those afflicted, but may also adversely affect family members and loved ones. There are very few studies which investigate the lived experiences of family members and loved ones of those suffering from hoarding disorder, and there is currently no research regarding arts-based approaches to inquiry. This research thesis utilized an arts-informed methodology as a means of exploring the lived experiences of these individuals. Two participants created artwork in response to the prompt; “create a message you would like to share with your hoarding loved one.” Participant dialogue and visual content informed a clinical analysis of the artwork. Artistic inquiry appeared to be a useful investigational methodology when working with this population.

▼ The prime motive of the present study was to
explore the relationship of insight and motivation for change in
patients suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder. The findings
of the study have particular relevance for the management of the
OCD patients aiming towards improving their quality of life. This
study put some light on the underneath relationships of poor
motivation for change, insight, coping styles and attributional
styles of the OCD patients. The study of motivation is an area of
psychology that has particular relevance to the issues of dropout,
compliance, and maintenance of change. In fact, lack of motivation
is one of the most frequently cited reasons for patient dropout,
failure to comply, frequency of relapse, and other negative
treatment outcomes for a variety of psychotherapeutic interventions
(Pelletier, Tuson, Haddad, 1997; Ryan, Plant, & O’Malley,
1995). The present study had specific implications in the area of
clinical therapeutic interventions. Objectives of the study were as
follows 1. To study the relationship between insight and motivation
for change in patients suffering from OCD. 2. To study the
relationship between insight and coping styles in patients
suffering from OCD. 3. To study the relationship between insight
and attributional style in patients suffering from OCD. 4. To study
the relationship between motivation for change and coping styles in

▼ The primary objective of this study is to increase knowledge about the inter-relationship between parenting and
obsessive-compulsive disorder in children and adolescents. More specifically, this study sets out to understand the impact or influence of fathers on children and adolescents with
obsessive-compulsive disorder. This study further examines the changing roles of fathers and the impact these have on their children with
obsessive-compulsive disorder. In an attempt to gain new insights into the father-child relationship, I have placed an emphasis on both risk and protective factors. That is, the study examines the lived experience of these fathers encompassing their interpretation of their children's obsessions and compulsions as well as their response to same, which has further consequences for themselves and their children. I was also the intent of this study to move away from "blaming" the parent or the child and instead, to examine the transactional nature of the emergence and maintenance of
obsessive-compulsive disorder.

▼ The inference-based approach (IBA) has proposed a cognitive model to explain the aetiology and maintenance of
obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). According to this model, specified reasoning processes lead an individual with OCD to confuse an imagined possibility with an actual probability, a state termed inferential confusion. These reasoning processes include inverse reasoning, in which hypothetical causes form the basis of conclusions about reality, and distrust in one's senses. Empirical evidence for the IBA and these reasoning processes is emerging but has been limited to self-report measures, which do not allow causal inferences. Thus the overarching aim of the current thesis was to explore the role of these reasoning processes in OCD using different methodological strategies, particularly experimental designs. In Study 1, I developed a task-based measure of inverse reasoning and found that performance on this task was associated with OCD symptoms in a large online sample. In Study 2, I used an interpretive cognitive bias modification procedure to train a bias towards inverse reasoning in an undergraduate sample. I found that those trained in inverse reasoning, compared to a control condition, reported more OCD symptoms and were more avoidant of potentially contaminated objects. In Studies 3 and 4, I attempted to replicate and extend previous research suggesting that the distrust of one's senses in OCD may stem from an actual deficit in accessing sensory information. There was insufficient evidence for a clinically significant deficit in OCD when accessing sensory information to accurately produce levels of grip strength and distance judgements. In Study 5, I explored the relationship between the ease of imagining a future situation and the perceived likelihood of this situation in a clinical OCD population. In this thesis I have presented a series of studies that have facilitated significant progress towards our understanding of the role of maladaptive reasoning processes and related processes in OCD. In conclusion, research into these mechanisms warrants continued attention in order to develop and refine techniques for clinical practice that effectively target these processes and reduce the debilitating effects of OCD.

▼ The number of nascent entrepreneurs continues to
decline, and for those that do try entrepreneurship, it often does
not stick—they try it and move on to other careers. Heightening our
understanding of what motivates and guides the actions of nascent
entrepreneurs is key to addressing these negative trends. The
current literature has examined
passion; although, for people who
have never launched an entrepreneurial venture,
passion seems less
relevant. Thus, in this study, we conceptualize anticipatory
entrepreneurial
passion (AEP). AEP is the anticipation of intense
positive feelings associated with engaging in entrepreneurial
activities meaningful to a “future self” identity. AEP was
empirically tested to analyze how it changes over time. The
relationship between effort and affect and affect and effort is
simultaneously tested to settle disparate findings in the
literature. The use of a longitudinal design measuring variables
over seven time periods allows a basis for causal claims. Key
findings include that AEP is both a malleable and enduring emotion
and that AEP in current time period predicts AEP in subsequent time
periods. In terms of the effort to affect debate, findings suggest
that these variables are causally interlinked. Deepening our
understanding of the key variables under study that impacts the
development and motivation of nascent entrepreneurs is of interest
to academics involved in teaching and researching entrepreneurship
as well as practitioners that are either embarking on an
entrepreneurial career or for mentors that may be advising nascent
entrepreneurs.
