▼ Engineering an assistive robot, capable of serving human needs and performing daily chores, has been a long-sought-for goal for the Robotics field as a whole. One of the main challenges facing researchers is on how to build the robot to be accepted by humans. There are many factors involved in having a robot and a human effectively collaborating, including technological limitations, anthropomorphic elements, ethical concerns, social factors, etc. One of the less explored aspects of this problem is physical interaction between a human and a robot. Envision a robotic assistant that is helping a human, moving a piece of furniture. Since the human and the robot are haptically coupled, every small movement/force of the robot is perceived by the human and can be interpreted as a clue for the next action. At the same time, the human expects the robot to understand the cues he/she is giving. In other words, the human expects the interaction to be fluid and natural, as it is with a human partner. Note that in a physical interaction between two humans, the kinesthetic cues serve as a communication channel that guarantees the success of the collaboration, even in cases when the verbal communication is missing. In this thesis, we focus on the physical interaction between a human and a robot. We first study the characteristics of a natural human-human physical interaction and explore different features of cooperation between two humans. In particular, we propose an abstract model for the quality of cooperation, a mathematical model for the motion trajectory during the interaction and a novel approach in modeling the interaction force between two humans. Based on these models that we construct for a natural human-human interaction, we propose a set of control policies that replicates the same interaction features and mimics human’s behavior during a physical interaction between a human and a robot. ▼ In this dissertation three problems strongly connected to the topic of homogeneity are considered. For each of them a distribution-free approach is investigated using simulated as well as real data. The first procedure proposed is motivated by the fact that a mere rejection of homogeneity is unsatisfactory in many applications, because it is often not clear which discrepancies of the samples case the rejection. To capture the dissimilarities our method combines a fairly general mixture model with the classical nonparametric two-sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. In case of a rejection by this test, the proposed algorithm quantifies the discrepancies between the corresponding samples. These dissimilarities are represented by the so called shrinkage factor and the correction distribution. The former measures the degree of discrepancy between the two samples. The latter contains information with regard to the over- and undersampled regions when comparing one sample to the other in the Kolmogorov-Smirnov sense. We prove the correctness of the algorithm as well as its linear running time when applied to sorted samples. As illustrated in various data settings, the fast method leads to adequate and intuitive results. The second topic investigated is a new class of two-sample homogeneity tests based on the concept of f-divergences. These distance like measures for pairs of distributions are defined via the corresponding probability density functions. Thus, homogeneity tests relying on f-divergences are not limited to discrepancies in location or scale, but can detect arbitrary types of alternatives. We propose a distribution-free estimation procedure for this class of measures based on kernel density estimation and spline smoothing. As shown in extensive simulations, the new method performs stable and quite well in comparison to several existing non- and semiparametric divergence estimators. Furthermore, we construct distribution-free two-sample homogeneity tests relying on various divergence estimators using the permutation principle. The tests are compared to an asymptotic divergence procedure as well as to several traditional parametric and nonparametric tests on data from different distributions under the null hypothesis and several alternatives. The results suggest that divergence-based methods have considerably higher power than traditional methods if the distributions do not predominantly differ in location. Therefore, it is advisable to use such tests if changes in scale, skewness, kurtosis or the distribution type are possible while the means of the samples are of comparable size. The methods are thus of great value in many applications as illustrated on ion mobility spectrometry data. The last topic we deal with is the detection of structural breaks in time series. The method introduced is motivated by characteristic functions and Fourier-type transforms. ▼ Text mining has gained the ever-increasing attention of researchers in recent years because text is one of the most natural and easy ways to express human knowledge and opinions, and is therefore believed to have a variety of application scenarios and a potentially high commercial value. It is commonly accepted that Bayesian models with finite-dimensional probability distributions as building blocks, also known as parametric topic models, are effective tools for text mining. However, one problem in existing parametric topic models is that the hidden topic number needs to be fixed in advance. Determining an appropriate number is very difficult, and sometimes unrealistic, for many real-world applications and may lead to over-fitting or under-fitting issues. Bayesian nonparametric learning is a key approach for learning the number of mixtures in a mixture model (also called the model selection problem), and has emerged as an elegant way to handle a flexible number of topics. The core idea of Bayesian nonparametric models is to use stochastic processes as building blocks, instead of traditional fixed-dimensional probability distributions. Even though Bayesian nonparametric learning has gained considerable research attention and undergone rapid development, its ability to conduct complicated text mining tasks, such as: document-word co-clustering, document network learning, multi-label document learning, and so on, is still weak. Therefore, there is still a gap between the Bayesian nonparametric learning theory and complicated real-world text mining tasks. To fill this gap, this research aims to develop a set of Bayesian nonparametric models to accomplish four selected complex text mining tasks. First, three Bayesian nonparametric sparse nonnegative matrix factorization models, based on two innovative dependent Indian buffet processes, are proposed for document-word co-clustering tasks. Second, a Dirichlet mixture probability measure strategy is proposed to link the topics from different layers, and is used to build a Bayesian nonparametric deep topic model for topic hierarchy learning. Third, the thesis develops a Bayesian nonparametric relational topic model for document network learning tasks by a subsampling Markov random field. Lastly, the thesis develops Bayesian nonparametric cooperative hierarchical structure models for multi-label document learning task based on two stochastic process operations: inheritance and cooperation. The findings of this research not only contribute to the development of Bayesian nonparametric learning theory, but also provide a set of effective tools for complicated text mining applications.

▼ Analysis of Covariance (ANOCOVA) has been considered as a more effective approach in data analysis than an ordinary Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) for two reasons: (1) increasing the power and precision of the tests through the reduction in error variance, and (2) providing a means of statistically adjusting for pre-existing differences between treatment groups. The parametric analysis of covariance theory was developed with the assumption of normality. If this assumption underlying the parametric model is uncertain, then the applicability of the parametric test is doubtful. Nonparametric ANOCOVA is a robust competitor of the parametric method with less restrictive distributional assumptions. In the past two decades, several nonparametric ANOCOVA tests for one-way layouts have been suggested and shown to be robust and powerful through simulation studies. A number of nonparametric ANOCOVA procedures for higher way layouts have also been studied and the limiting results are usually based on increasing cell sizes. The model that is considered in this research is the ANOCOVA model for Randomized Block Designs (RBD) with one observation per cell, as Yij=ƒÊ+ƒÀi+„„j+0(Xij-X..)+cij, i=1,c,n;j=1,c,c, where cij's are either iid or exchangeable and have continuous cdf's. Some nonparametric aligned rank test procedures are proposed in this paper for detecting the treatment effects for the above model. The first test proposed in this paper for ANOCOVA in RBD is based on the ranks of the block-mean-aligned observations. The overall ranking is used and the proposed test statistic has asymptotically a x^ distribution. Based on the same principle in developing the above test, a test for ANOCOVA in Incomplete Block Designs is also proposed. The second test proposed in this paper for ANOCOVA in RBD also uses overall ranking on the aligned observations. A test procedure using within-block rankings on the covariate-aligned observations is also proposed. The Rank Transformation test of Conover and Iman (1981) is briefly discussed in this paper. Through a Monte Carlo simulation study, the aligned rank test based on within block rankings and the Rank Transformation test are shown to be very robust and powerful and are strongly recommended for the model we discussed. It is found that the parametric test does not present good results in most of the non-normal cases and its use is discouraged when the underlying distribution is unknown.

This dissertation contains two parts. In the first part, we develop backfitting algorithms for doubly penalized additive and ANOVA modeling using total variation penalties carefully extended to multivariate functions. In the second part, we develop subsampling strategies to accelerate large-scale multi-class logistic regression with big data. Additive and ANOVA modeling aim to capture nonlinear relationship between response and covariates. First, we develop a backfitting algorithm to implement a doubly penalized method for additive models using total-variation and empirical-norm penalties. Total-variation penalty leads to an automatic knots selection for each component function, whereas empirical norm penalty can result in zero solutions for component functions and hence facilitates component selection in high-dimensional settings. We present numerical experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms for linear and logistic additive modeling. Next we construct a new class of total variation penalties, called hierarchical total variations, which measures total variations at different levels including main effects and multi-way interactions for multivariate functions. We derive suitable basis functions for multivariate splines and then extend our back fitting algorithm to implement functional ANOVA modeling with double penalties. We demonstrate potential advantages of our proposed method compared with other alternatives including MARS, tree boosting, and random forest on simulated data and real data in both linear and logistic regression scenarios. A major challenge for statistical modeling in the big data era is that the available data volume far exceeds the computational capability. A common approach for solving this problem is to employ a subsampled dataset that can be handled by available computation resources. We propose a general subsampling scheme called local uncertainty sampling to accelerate the computation of large-scale logistic regression and examine the variance of the resulting estimator. We show that asymptotically, the proposed method always achieves a smaller variance than that of the uniform random sampling. Moreover, when the classes are conditionally imbalanced, significant improvement over uniform sampling can be achieved by our proposed subsampling strategy. Empirical performance of the proposed method is compared to other methods on both simulated and real-world datasets, and the results confirm our theoretical analysis.

Envisager un travail de recherche relatif à la valeur, à la formation et à la nature des grandeurs économiques peut sembler inopportun, tant les notions d’échange, de prix, de marché, et bien d’autres encore, tombent sous l’évidence de notre environnement quotidien. Nous montrons dans cette étude que nombre de concepts en économie ne reçoivent qu’une définition incertaine et parfois inconsistante. C’est à ce titre, le discours économique qui s’en trouve fragilisé, à tel point qu’il en vienne à se prononcer sur ce qui n’existe pas, et laisse échapper son objet véritable.Dans nos économies salariales, la valeur est tantôt reçue tantôt dépensée dans la formation et dans la destruction d’un revenu. Celui-ci est monétaire, et est objectif dans le sens où il confère un pouvoir ferme d’acquisition de biens et de services. Nous vérifions alors que l’objet de la science économique est le revenu, et que celui-ci unit les deux actes antagoniques de la production et de la consommation. Nous nous assurons par suite qu’il ne peut être pensé en termes « réels » ; la valeur n’est pas cachée derrière les choses. Dans un second temps, nous voyons que le revenu procède d’une mesure, et que c’est de cette mesure qu’il tire son objectivité. La mesure en économie est singulière, elle ne peut être empruntée au domaine de la physique. Elle est monétaire et réalisée dans le versement des salaires. À la lumière irremplaçable de la théorie des émissions de B. Schmitt, nous montrons que tout produit naît dans sa mesure en unités de salaires, et parvenons à une conclusion forte : la répartition révise l’émission du revenu sans réviser sa mesure. Nous sommes parvenus à une théorie cohérente et complète de la valeur.

To investigate on the question of the formation of the economic magnitudes, and on the question of value seems to be pointless, since those notions appear to be understood and to fall under the scope of our daily experiment. We show in the present work that several fundamental concepts and central notions do not receive a proper definition within our discipline. As a consequence, it is all the economic discourse that is weakened, at such a point that it talks about things that, actually, do not exist, but in the economist’s mind, and do not consider its true matter. In our wage economy, value is sometimes created sometimes destructed respectively in the formation and the destruction of income. The latter is an objective magnitude in the sense that it confers to its owner the tangible ability to buy goods and services. We thus make sure that income unifies the two opposite operations that are production and consumption, and that it is the true object of the economic science. We also insure that income is a monetary by naturee, and cannot be expressed in “real” terms; value is not hidden behind things. In a second time, we see that income is measured, and that its objectivity comes from the fact that it is measured. Лингвистика - Linguistics

Проблем егзистенције се у лингвистици разматра у оквиру два друга проблема: 1) Које реченице су егзистенцијалне? 2) Који квантификатори се могу појавити у егзистенцијалним реченицама? Што се логике тиче, прво питање је формулисано пре као 3) шта егзистанцијална реченица тврди као пропозиција? Иако се одговори разликују, заједничко им је становиште да постоји прототип егзистенцијалне реченице, односно да треба испитивати само одређене егзистенцијалне глаголе. Тако се у енглеском испитује глагол бити (be), а у српском глагол имати, форма има. Скоро опште је прихваћено да уколико се испитују реченице у којима је главни глагол ''постојати''(exist), да резултати могу бити само тривијални, стога су такве анализе изузетно ретке. Међутим, пошто је наша основна хипотеза (заснована на Бондаренковом становишту) да су глаголи носиоци реализације категорије егзистенције, где је глагол постојати (exist) основни егзистенцијални глагол, наша анализа почиње с реченицама у којима је главни глагол управо глагол постојати. Упоређујући ''базичне'' и ''проширене'' реченице с постојати, имати (било) и бити (be) као главним глаголима, дошли смо до следећих резултата: 1) Глаголи постојати, има (било) и бити (be) покривају различите слојеве ''егзистенције''; први слој се односи на све (everything) као било које нешто што припада једном од могућих скупова, скупу чији су елементи директно ''бројиви'' или скупу чији су елементи индиректно бројиви, након што је дата ''мера'' (''мерљив'' скуп елемената) и који носи глагол постојати; глаголи има за српски и бити (be) за енглески, првенствено се односе на посебно нешто, које припада једном од поменутих скупова, где се уводи слој ''људско'', тј. уводи се ''мера'', првенствено за време и простор; у овом слоју, у оба језика, глагол бити, има и посебне функције: специфичније се одређује ''мера'' за време, уводи се 'стање' и ''догађај'', чиме се омогућава појава трећег слоја који носе ''глаголи Догађања''; на трећем слоју ''егзистенција'' се одређује као конкретно (живо, неживо) и апстрактно, посебно и опште, као сви(all ) које је једна целина, догађај. 2) Реченична форма се такође мења, од персоналне ''проширене'' реченице с глаголом постојати на 'безличну' ''проширену'' реченицу с глаголима имати(било) и бити (be), односно, на 'безличне' реченице с глаголима Догађања. 3) Иако два језика показују разлике с обзиром на граматичка решења облика ''проширене'' егзистенцијалне реченице с поменутим глаголима као и на функције које се придодељују глаголу бити, видљиво је да категорија егзистенције, када је реализована глаголима, има бар три слоја значења; у првом слоју ''постојање'' је првенствено припадање, у другом је ''примерковање'', док се у трећем може одредити као врста ''догађаја'' који може бити сложен или једноставан. 4) Што се тиче квантификатора, примећујемо да иако за сваки слој можемо издвојити ''типичне'' квантификаторе, узето у целини, ''егзистенција'' укључује појаву свих позитивних квантификатора. 5) Ако прихватимо да су егзистенцијални глаголи примарни носиоци…

▼ In the first chapter of this dissertation, I develop a method that extends quantile regressions to high dimensional factor analysis. In this context, the conditional quantile function of a panel of variables is endowed with a factor structure. Thus, both factors and factor loadings are allowed to be quantile-specific. I provide a set of conditions under which these objects are identied, and I propose a simple two-step iterative procedure called Quantile Principal Components (QPC) to estimate them. Uniform consistency of the estimators is established under general assumptions when both the cross-section and time dimensions (N and T, respectively) become large jointly. In the second chapter, I propose a novel measure to quantify systemic risk from the information contained in asset returns. In the context of the external habits formation model of Campbell and Cochrane (1999) and heteroskedastic stock returns, I show that the equilibrium risk premium has a factor structure where factors are a monotonic transformation of the systemic risk variable in the structural model, and one of the factors affects the variance of excess returns. I estimate the factor model using the QPC estimation procedure. Simulations of the model calibrated to the US show a good performance of the proposed metric computed at quantiles different than the median. When estimated using post-war data, the proposed measure displays signicant hikes that coincide with both several US recessions and financial market turbulence periods; and it can forecast extreme tight and loose financial conditions, and sharp shifts in both economic activity and industrial production up to one year ahead. The third chapter provides limiting distributions of the QPC estimators proposed in the first chapter. Under certain additional assumptions related to the density of the observations about the quantile of interest, and the relationship between N and T, I show that the QPC estimators are asymptotically normal with convergence rates similar to the ones derived in the traditional factor analysis literature. Monte Carlo simulations suggest that the proposed theory provides a good approximation to the finite sample distribution of the QPC estimates. Advisors/Committee Members: Qu, Zhongjun (advisor).

▼ Background: Improving coordination of care is a major challenge for health systems internationally. Tools are required to evaluate alternative approaches to improve coordination from the patient perspective. This study aimed to develop and validate a new measure of coordination for use in a primary care setting. Methods: Four methods were used. Firstly, a concept analysis was undertaken to identify the essential attributes of coordination drawing upon literature from health and organisational studies and to establish its boundaries with related concepts such as continuity of care, integration and patient centred care. Secondly, existing measures of coordination were reviewed to assess the extent to which item content reflected the definition arising from the concept analysis and to appraise psychometric properties. Thirdly, a new instrument, the Care Coordination Questionnaire (CCQ), was developed utilising items from existing questionnaires and others developed following focus groups with 30 patients. Ten cognitive interviews were used to evaluate the items generated. Finally, the CCQ was administered in a cross sectional survey to 980 patients. Item and model analyses were performed. Test-retest reliability was evaluated through a second administration of the CCQ after two weeks. Concurrent validity was evaluated through correlation with the Client Perceptions of Coordination Questionnaire (CPCQ). Construct validity was evaluated through correlation with responses to a global coordination item and a satisfaction scale and the testing of two a prior hypotheses: i) coordination scores would decrease with increasing numbers of providers and ii) coordination scores would decrease with increasing numbers of long-term conditions. Results: The concept analysis suggested that coordination should be considered as a process for the organisation of patient care characterised by: purposeful activity, information exchange, knowledge of roles and responsibilities, and responsiveness to change. The systematic review identified 5 existing measures of coordination and a further 10 measures which incorporated a coordination subscale. Only one demonstrated conceptual coverage but had poor psychometric properties. A new instrument was therefore developed and tested as described above. 299 completed surveys were returned. Respondents were predominantly elderly and of white ethnicity; approximately half were female. Five items were deleted following item analyses. Model analysis suggested a four factor two-level model of coordination comprising of 18 items. This correlated well with the CPCQ, the global coordination item and satisfaction scale. The a priori hypotheses were upheld. Retest reliability was acceptable at the patient group level. Conclusions: The CCQ has demonstrated good psychometric characteristics in terms of item responses, reliability and construct validity. ▼ The notion of calling toward career or life roles is salient for many, and as research on calling progresses, cohesive theories are solidifying. However, measurement challenges from lack of consensus on calling definition, and specifically perceived source of calling, pose a barrier. One of the most common definitions defines calling as being prosocial in nature, involving purposeful work, and arising from an external, transcendent summons. However, research suggests this definition may not adequately capture the experience of calling for people who instead or additionally perceive their calling as arising from an internal source. Consequently, I revised one of the most commonly used measures of calling, the Calling and Vocation Questionnaire (CVQ) to serve two purposes: (a) to add an internal summons dimension to the overall scale and (b) to create a short-version of the scale that would be suitable for research. My revisions included the creation of eight items assessing internal summons for the original CVQ and 10 items for a short form (CVQ-10). Items were administered to undergraduate students (N = 496) over age 18. Confirmatory factor analyses were used to evaluate a series of hypothesized models. Fit for the revised CVQ (including internal summons items) was inadequate (χ2 [429, N = 252] = 1026.058, p < .001, CFI = .810, RMSEA = .074). This was likely due in part to poorer baseline model fit for the original CVQ (with no additional items) within this sample compared to the CVQ’s validation study. Inadequate model fit was also observed across subsequent models. Additionally, inadequate fit was observed for the CVQ-10 (χ2 [34, N = 252) = 498.560, p < .001, CFI = .642, RMSEA = .209). Results suggest that further investigation is warranted regarding a potential internal summons dimension of calling. The unique context (e.g., Christian, liberal arts) of this research setting revealed curious and complex relations between the internal and transcendent sources of calling (i.e., negative regression weights and lower item-total correlations for transcendent summons items when internal summons items were added to the model), suggesting that items assessing calling source may not cleanly capture source across different populations.

▼ The primary purpose of this thesis is to explain the effectiveness of advertisement by predicting the attention score using the Flow of Attention graph and other survey responses. I address two problems: creating the algorithm to identify the peaks in the Flow of Attention graph and predicting the attention score based on predictor variables from questionnaire responses and the Flow of Attention graph. The sample data comprises a total of 141 randomly selected advertisements provided by Ameritest, a marketing research firm. The Problem 1 was addressed by two different algorithms; the first one is created manually based on moving average points with a window size of 3, and the other is an Edge detection function' derived from the other research. The manual moving average algorithm provided a better consistency with the reference peaks and the analysts' peaks by measurement of agreement, calculated with Cronbach's alpha. The Problem 2 was addressed by an missing imputation procedure and model selection procedure for the multiple regression model. Twenty out of twenty three variables contained missing values and they were imputed by random regression imputation procedure. Model selection methods for the imputed data included the LASSO and all possible subsets by AIC. In order to get both a reliable and stable final model, the imputation was conducted a hundred times and found that the LASSO method provided a simpler and more stable result than all possible subsets by AIC method. Based on the final results from these two methods, the attention score increased when the audience liked the commercial, felt entertained, perceived it as different from other commercials, and felt better about the company (or the brand). The results also showed that the number of peaks, which is a variable from the Flow of Attention graph, did not indicate any significant impact to the attention score, since no model selection results contained the variable. Through the statistical analysis results in this thesis, the LASSO model selection shows a high stability of the results in the multiple random regression imputed data. Trying with various numbers of imputations and with other model selection methods can be suggested as future study to confirm the compatibility of the model selection methods in the presence of missing data.
