O presente trabalho consiste em uma reflexão sobre os procedimentos criativos de um conjunto de composições, relacionada aos conceitos de memória/memorial e identidade. Identidade que está conectada ao procedimento de criação musical e à busca por um conjunto de signos, atitudes e decisões que possam contribuir, de certa forma, para a constituição de uma identidade sonora. O primeiro capítulo compreende uma revisão sobre os conceitos de memória/memorial e identidade, abordando questões sociais, culturais, artísticas e, principalmente, musicais associadas a esses temas. Os capítulos seguintes investigam as composições individualmente, ressaltando o referencial específico e as considerações estéticas que envolveram o ato composicional. O capítulo conclusivo expõe os elementos, decisões e atitudes composicionais utilizadas e reutilizadas, que circundaram a criação das peças constituintes deste trabalho, com a finalidade de trazer à tona indícios de uma possível identidade entre as composições e, consequentemente, deste compositor.

This paper consists in a reflection on the creative procedures of a set of compositions, related to the concepts of memory/memorial and identity. Identity that is connected to the procedure of musical creation and to the search for a set of signs, attitudes and decisions that can contribute in some way to the constitution of a sonic identity. Entails a review on memory/memorial and identity, addressing social, cultural, artistic and, most importantly, musical issues associated to those themes. Then, it discourses about the compositions individually, relating the specific referential and aesthetic considerations involving the compositional act. The final chapter outlines the compositional elements, decisions and attitudes utilized and reused, which encircled the creation of each one of the works constituents of this paper, in order to expose indications of a possible identity between the compositions and, therefore, of this composer.

▼ Melodic dictation is a cognitively demanding process that requires students to hear a melody, then without any access to an external reference, transcribe the melody within a limited time frame. Despite its ubiquity in curricula within School of Music settings, exactly how an individual learns a melody is not well understood. This dissertation aims to fill the gap in the literature between aural skills practitioners and music psychologists in order to reach conclusions that can be applied systematically in pedagogical contexts. In order to do this, I synthesize literature from music theory, music psychology, and music education in order to demonstrate how tools from both cognitive psychology as well as computational musicology can be used to help inform pedagogical practices. In the second chapter, I discuss factors that might play a role in a student's ability to take melodic dictation and put forward a taxonomy of factors that are assumed to contribute to an individual’s ability to take melodic dictation. The third chapter of the dissertation investigates individual factors that are theorized to contribute to melodic dictation using a cross-sectional experimental design. The chapter corroborates claims on the importance of understanding individual differences in working memory capacity in research on melodic dictation. The fourth chapter discusses how aural skills pedagogy can incorporate methodologies from computational musicology in order to inform teaching practice. In my fifth chapter, I introduce the MeloSol corpus, a new collection of 783 digitized melodies encoded in the **kern format. In the sixth chapter, I synthesize the previous research in a melodic dictation experiment to show how using robust statistical methods can be used model melodic dictation. Finally, in my seventh chapter, I introduce a computational, cognitive model of melodic dictation with the goal of helping explain how students improve at melodic dictation. I demonstrate how modeling the cognitive decision process during melodic dictation helps provide a precise framework for pedagogues to understand student’s inner cognition during melodic dictation and can help inform teaching practice.

▼ A radical transformation is taking place in today’s society with the rapid developments in digital technology. The digital dispersion of information occurs globally at an unprecedented speed, altering innumerable aspects of cultural memory to the extent that the experience of cyclical time of ritual culture is gradually replaced by the prevalence of linear time of progress and chaotic time of computerized processes. As a result, both formation and experience of meaning are changed. With that, an important question arises with regards to music: how does musical meaning transpire in contemporary culture? As a theoretical companion to my compositional work, this doctoral dissertation addresses this question from the perspective of memory. Based on the idea that musical meaning is informed through its contextualization within the manifold intersections of memory, cultural memory, and digital technology, its first three chapters explore the relationships between memory and identity, externalized memory and culture, time and meaning in music, and how these relationships can inform musical analysis. The fourth chapter provides analytical approaches to compositions by Luciano Berio, Helmut Lachenmann, John Cage, and Pierluigi Billone informed by the conclusions gained from the previous chapters. The last three chapters focus on the added complexity of the relationships between musical memory and cultural memory as impacted by digital technologies. It will be explored how digital processes affect various aspects of musical memory and musical time. Correspondingly, the final chapter offers musical analyses of compositions with live electronics by composers Brian Ferneyhough and Jonathan Harvey, and the dissertation will be concluded by an analysis of my dissertation compositionffffff which is appended. Central to the investigation are the post-structuralist ideas of philosophers Bernard Stiegler, Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, as well as theories regarding cultural memory brought forth by Jan and Aleida Assmann. In order to apply these concepts to an examination of music, they will be reconciled with the musical philosophy of Gunnar Hindrichs, the musical semiotics of Jean-Jacques Nattiez, the cultural semiotics of Roland Posner, and the critical media studies of Wolfgang Ernst. Neste trabalho, investigo as potencialidades no emprego dos guias de execução (GEs) propostos por Chaffin et al (2002), buscando entender os processos de resgate da memória de músicos que executam obras sem a utilização da partitura. Trata-se de um estudo de três casos, com pianistas próximos do estágio de profissionalização. Os três escolheram rememorizar e reapresentar obras do compositor Cláudio Santoro (1919-1989), em um período de 20 meses, durante os quais pude acompanhar e verificar a eficácia do uso desses procedimentos bem como o entendimento de cada um dos participantes com relação ao emprego das estratégias propostas. Após a coleta dos dados, analiso, apresento e discuto os resultados da aplicação dos GEs. Os dados coletados, provenientes das anotações das partituras, questionários e relatos nos diários de estudo obtidos após as execuções memorizadas e coletadas em intervalos distintos, formam a base da discussão apresentada neste trabalho. Com base nesses dados, pude traçar um perfil para cada um dos participantes por meio das categorias predominantes nos GEs utilizados bem como na evolução na aplicação desses guias durante o tempo de duração da pesquisa. O exame dos registros dos resgates de memória pelas tentativas de reescrita das partituras também contribuiu significativamente para a identificação dos GEs empregados e assimilados durante a rememorização do repertório escolhido.

This is an investigation of the possibilities afforded by the use of Chaffin‟s performance cues (PCs, 2002) in order to understand retrieval processes of musicians that choose to perform by memory. This study was conducted with three pianists on their way to becoming professional musicians. All three chose to recover and to present previously learned works by Brazilian composer Cláudio Santoro (1919-1989). During a twenty month period, I was able to monitor the efficacy of these procedures and I could also verify not only the application of PCs sets of learning strategies but also the resulting level of understanding with each one of the participants. After each of the memorized presentations data was obtained from score annotations, questionnaires, study journals and attempts at rewriting the score. These activities proceeded at scheduled intervals and the reports provide the basis for the analyses and discussions. Based on the data, it was possible to show how each participant employed diverse categories of PC sets and how each one evolved during the time of this research. An examination of the materials utilized as tools for memory retrieval contributed to reveal each individual profile and the distinct collections of PCs each one of them employed during the relearning and retrieval of the chosen repertoire.

▼ Music exhibits remarkable properties in the context of memory. For example, memory for melodies is long lasting, persistent, and spared from some forms of dementia and severe brain injuries. Over the course of 10 experiments, we here attempt to shed light on the question of what makes music ‘special’ by specifically investigating interference in memory for melody. Most domains show a decrease in recognition performance between the first and second presentation of an object as the number of intervening items increases. We tested this cumulative disruptive interference effect in the context of memory for melodies, with results showing that memory for melodies is not much affected by the number of intervening items. Specifically, the probability of correctly recognising a melody was statistically identical and above chance between 1 and up to nearly 200 intervening melodies. To explain these findings, we provide a new Regenerative-Multiple-Representations (RMR) conjecture. The conjecture describes a crucial link between prior experience, perception, and subsequent formation of memories. Using the theoretical framework of this conjecture, we further explored memory for melodies in a series of experiments. In the process, we revealed how to disrupt and shape memory for melodies’ resilience to cumulative interference using melodies in an unfamiliar tuning system and with pitch-only and rhythm-only sequences. In a final analysis, we used memory as a window into perception in more general terms, and analysed data from all experiments combined to measure the degree of similarity in listeners’ perception of music. The findings of this dissertation contribute to our understanding of fundamental memory phenomena, while providing practical implementations and elucidating further the mechanisms that explain why music may indeed be ‘special’. ▼ This thesis explored two main research questions, firstly investigating whether musical expertise offers a performance advantage in working memory for sequences of tones that vary in pitch, and secondly whether any advantage of musical expertise may be present in older as well as younger individuals. Previous research on working memory for tone sequences has reported that articulatory suppression interferes with temporary storage of verbal but not with tone sequences (Koelsch et al, 2009), suggesting a “tonal loop” within a musician’s working memory (Schulze, Zysset, Mueller, Friederici, & Koelsch, 2011) that complements the phonological loop for verbal material in musicians and non-musicians alike (e.g., Baddeley, 1986; 1992). The five experiments reported here explored detection of a pitch change between pairs of tone sequences with or without concurrent articulatory suppression or singing suppression. In Experiment 1, with pairs of auditory tonal (in a musical key) sequences to be compared, singing suppression impaired non-musicians significantly more than musicians, although both groups showed an impairment, whereas only non-musicians were affected by verbal articulatory suppression. In Experiment 2, conducted only with musicians who could read music, the first sequence of each pair was presented visually and the second sequence for comparison was presented aurally. Musicians were again impaired by singing suppression but not by articulatory suppression. For Experiment 3, for auditory atonal (no musical key) pairs of sequences, non-musicians performed at floor, and musicians were again significantly more impaired by singing suppression than by articulatory suppression. In contrast, for Experiment 4, only with musicians who could read music, for visually presented atonal sequences each followed by an auditory atonal sequence for comparison, musicians were significantly more impaired by articulatory suppression than singing suppression. These results suggest that for tonal sequences, musicians use their musical training and experience, coupled with subvocalised singing, but for atonal sequences, additional strategies involving phonological rehearsal may be used. Non-musicians may also rely on musical experience and subvocal singing for tonal sequences but seem to be unable to do so for atonal sequences. Results are consistent with the use by both musicians and non-musicians of a tonal loop for the rehearsal of tone sequences, which develops with musical training and may be used in addition to subvocal rehearsal. Previous research has suggested musical expertise may offer some protection against cognitive ageing (Hanna-Pladdy & MacKay, 2011; Amer, Kalender, Hasher, Trehub, & Wong, 2013). Experiment 5 in this thesis explored whether a lifetime of musical training and experience may offer the same advantages in old age for retaining tone sequences that had been found in Experiments 1 and 3 for younger musicians. Cette thèse propose une réflexion sur le développement du sens musical de l’enfant tunisien de 6 à 13 ans dans le contexte musical particulier du XXIème siècle. La problématique de base est de savoir si la culture musicale tunisienne qui repose principalement sur une esthétique modale arabe favorise le développement d’un ensemble d’habitudes d’écoutes chez l’enfant tunisien en rapport avec le système modal arabe. Peut-on alors postuler l’existence d’un éventuel « sens modal » chez l’enfant tunisien qui se développe progressivement de 6 à 13 ans et qui favorise l’acquisition des éléments caractéristiques du système modal tels que les intervalles spécifiques à la gamme arabe, la hiérarchie modale et les formules-types spécifiques à un mode ? Dans son aspect théorique, cette étude qui revêt une dimension psychologique passe en revue l’ensemble de travaux en psychologie de la musique et en psychologie du développement musical qui se sont intéressés à l’étude de la perception musicale en général et à la perception de la tonalité en particulier. Dans son aspect pratique, elle reprend un principe d’expérience effectué par Le Professeur Imberty dans son étude de l‘acquisition des structures tonales chez l’enfant occidental. Cette expérience qui a été réadaptée au contexte de la musique modale repose sur l’idée de la succession de trois épreuves : une première épreuve de mémorisation immédiate, une deuxième épreuve d’achèvement mélodique et une troisième épreuve de production vocale. The present thesis offers a reflection on the development of 6-to-13 year-old Tunisian children’s musical awareness in the musical context of the XXI century. The basic argument here is whether the Tunisian musical culture that resides primarily in Arabic modal aesthetical system promotes the development of some listening habits among Tunisian children. Also postulated is the development of a modal awareness among the of 6-to-13 years old Tunisian children which boosts the acquisition of particular features of the modal system such as the specific intervals in the range Arab modal scale, the modal hierarchy, and standard formulas specific to a given mode. In its theoretical aspect, this study holds a psychological dimension in its review of literature attendant to the disciplines of psychology of music and musical developmental psychology which are concerned with the study of musical perception in general and the perception of tone in particular. In its practical aspect, the study draws on experimental model advanced by Professor Imberty in his account of the acquisition of the tonal structure among the Western children. The experimental procedure here has been adapted to the context of modal music which is based on the idea of three successive testing episodes related to the working memory, melodic attainment, and melodic vocal production.Keywords: Musical development - musical awareness - Arabic…

Estudos demonstram que a música e o Treino Musical (TM) atuam em diversas áreas do desenvolvimento humano: cognição, linguagem, socialização e raciocínio lógico-matemático. Há evidências de que o Treino Musical propicia ganhos quanto à memória operacional e à numerosidade de crianças escolares. Supõe-se que o TM poderia contribuir para a estimulação destas habilidades cognitivas em crianças pré-escolares. Este estudo prospectivo investigou os efeitos do TM sobre as habilidades de numerosidade e memória operacional em 57 pré-escolares com desenvolvimento típico e com idade de cinco anos em uma cidade do interior paulista. A amostra foi dividida em dois grupos, a saber: GE (Grupo Experimental; n=25) que participou de oito sessões do TM e o GC (Grupo Controle; n=32) que não recebeu estimulação musical, ambos balanceados quanto ao sexo. Todos os participantes foram avaliados em duas etapas por meio de instrumentos para os seguintes domínios: Raciocínio Abstrato (MPC – Escala Especial); Cognição Numérica (Zareki-K – Bateria Neuropsicológica para Avaliação do Tratamento dos Números e do Cálculo para Crianças Pré-escolares); e Memória Operacional (AWMA-Short form – Avaliação Automatizada da Memória Operacional-Versão reduzida). Os resultados mostraram que o TM produziu modificações relacionadas ao processamento numérico, senso numérico, bem como em memória operacional verbal.

Studies demonstrate that music and Music Training (MT) act in various human development areas: cognition, language, socialization, and logical-mathematical thinking. Evidences show that Music Training affords gains in both working memory and numeracy of school children. It is supposed that MT may contribute to stimulation of these cognitive abilities in preschoolers. This prospective paper investigated the MT effects on numeracy and working memory in 57 5-year-old preschoolers with typical development from a city in the countryside of Sao Paolo state in Brazil. The sample was divided into two groups: EG (Experimental Group; n=25), which took part of eight TM sessions, and CG (Control Group), which had no musical stimulation; both groups are gender-balanced. All participants were assessed in two stages through instruments for the following domains: Abstract Reasoning (CPM – Raven’s Coloured Progressive Matrices); Numerical Cognition (Zareki-K – Neuropsychological test battery for number processing and calculation in primary school and kindergarten children, in English) and Working Memory (AWMA–Short form – Automated Working Memory Assessment – Short form). Results show that MT produced modifications related to number processing, number sense and verbal working memory.

▼ This dissertation utilizes a multi-method approach to investigate the processes underlying musical learning and memory. Particular emphasis is placed on schematic processing, musical structure, temporal aspects of learning, statistics-based predictive models, efficiency, and the role of musical expertise. We employed a set of behavioral change detection studies with musician and nonmusician participants to test what is encoded into gist memory upon hearing unfamiliar melodies varying in musical structure. These studies demonstrate that listeners abstract a schematic representation of the melody that includes tonally and metrically salient tones. In well-structured music, change detection performance improves when a musical event does not conform to the listener's schematic expectations. Musical expertise is also shown to benefit change detection, especially when the melodies conform to the conventions of Western tonal music. In a study examining learning over a period of increasing musical exposure, we used an information theoretic approach to capture how the statistical properties of music influence listeners' musical memory. This work highlights how patterns and predictability can facilitate musical learning over time. In further investigation of what underlies this learning process, a series of neural network studies revealed that a compressed representation arose in the internal structure of a computational network as tonal and stylistic information were learned over time. Population sparsity of the SRN's hidden layer strongly predicted the sophistication of the network's musical output as rated by human listeners. Electroencephalography (EEG) methods were utilized to investigate the neural correlates of musical learning and memory, and to further explore the notion of increasing efficiency over the time-course of learning. These experiments suggest that the listener's implicit internal model of musical expectation is gradually developed and made increasingly accurate with repeated exposure to initially unfamiliar music. Both the computational and EEG experiments illustrate how efficiency accompanies successful learning over time. These findings, as well as those from the change detection and information theory studies, provide evidence that schemata are formed as the probabilities of forthcoming music are gradually learned with increasing experience. Schematic expectations dynamically guide perception and influence memory, and generally allow for more efficient musical processing. ▼ Henri Dutilleux's compositional language can be broadly divided into two categories: into a group of dynamic metamorphic techniques and processes the composer combined under the rubric of processes of progressive growth, and into different types of static and recurring pitch structures that have become known as referential devices. This dissertation explores the way author Marcel Proust's unique approach to the interconnected phenomena of time and memory in the novel À la recherche du temps perdu influenced Dutilleux's approach to those phenomena in his works, and how that influence manifests in the processes of progressive growth, processes which result in a manipulation of the musical object that reflects Proust's treatment of human character as comprised of multitudes; non-linear formal types, like multiply-directed time and moment form, that replicate Proust's non-chronologic approach to narrative sequencing; the formation of dense associative memory networks that are similar to those created in À la recherche du temps perdu by Proust's expansive use of metaphor and foreshadowing. Chapter 1 introduces the concepts that will be discussed, provides biographical sketches of Marcel Proust and Henri Dutilleux, and describes the dissertation's scope and methodology; Chapter 2 surveys Marcel Proust's narrative techniques, focusing on those techniques which affect time, memory and the concept of multiplicity; Chapter 3 surveys the compositional techniques that characterize Dutilleux's processes of progressive growth; Chapter 4 provides representative examples of the processes of progressive growth from Dutilleux's string quartet Ainsi la nuit; Chapter 5 compares Proust's narrative techniques and Dutilleux's processes of progressive growth, showing how Proust's narrative language manifests in the temporally disjunct formal types, associative networks and multiple perspectives of objects and sound events that characterize Ainsi la nuit; Chapter 6 surveys the different types of referential devices, juxtaposing them with the processes of progressive growth, and discussing their role in providing a structural framework; Chapter 7 explores gray areas—musical objects and sound events that simultaneously express the dynamic characteristics of progressive growth and the static characteristics of referential devices. 300,000 Starlings Swarm Over Denmark (2019) is an original work for chamber ensemble by David Gerhard Utzinger. The work is overtly pictorial; its aim is to abstractly evoke the beauty, dynamic formal metamorphoses, and complex swirling movements that are created by the massive flocks of starlings known as murmurations. Like Dutilleux's Ainsi la nuit, this work makes use of temporally disjunct formal types. Specifically, it is comprised of the type of multiple and interrupted linear streams of music that define multiply-directed time. Esta dissertação tem como objetivo principal avaliar a eficiência de aprendizagem/memorização de uma obra musical, quando realizada fora do piano, por oposição ao trabalho tradicional de aprendizagem das partituras, ou seja, no instrumento. Teve como referências os trabalhos anteriormente realizados por Walter Gieseking e Karl Leimer e a forma de trabalhar de Glenn Gould, a que acrescento algo da minha própria experiência. Para isso, foi realizado um trabalho de investigação para testar esta tese, baseado na execução de uma mesma obra musical por três grupos de alunos. Um grupo memorizou a obra ao piano, o outro fora dele, durante um período de uma semana e o terceiro grupo, grupo de controlo, aprendeu a obra fora do piano, mas nos dois últimos dias da semana, estudou-a no instrumento. Seguidamente, para contornar diferenças individuais, inverteram-se os grupos, ou seja, o grupo que aprendeu a peça ao piano, aprendeu, depois, outra obra fora dele e vice-versa. O grupo que aprendeu a obra das duas maneiras manteve-se inalterável. No fim de cada uma das semanas de estudo, realizou-se uma audição onde os alunos mostraram o resultado do seu trabalho e foram avaliados. A avaliação foi efetuada por um júri de dois elementos. Os resultados destas audições foram objeto de uma análise descritiva.

The aim of this dissertation is to evaluate the efficiency of the learning/memorization of a musical work away from the piano, as opposed to the more traditional work of learning scores, i.e. at the instrument. As references, we took the works of Walter Gieseking and Karl Leimer, the way of working of Glenn Gould, and something of my own experience. For this purpose, a trial was conducted: Three student groups were given a work to learn. Over a period of one week one group memorized the piece whilst working at the piano. The second group worked away from the piano. The third group also learned the piece away from the instrument except in the last two days when they studied the piece at the keyboard. After all this, to avoid individual differences, the groups were switched. Another work was studied. The group that had first learned a piece at the piano then learned the new work away from it, and vice-versa. The group that first learned the original piece in both ways did the same with the new work. At the end of each working week, the work that had been studied, was performed by all the students. The performances were evaluated by two teachers. The results of these evaluations were then analyzed.

Nous avons appréhendé Köln Concert comme une sorte de symptôme. Il présente à l’analyse un ensemble de caractéristiques rarement coprésentes. C’est en ce sens une œuvre utile, prétexte à évaluer des phénomènes parfois contradictoires, du moins qu’on a l’habitude d’opposer (composé/improvisé, écrit/oral, savante/populaire). Enregistré à l’opéra de Cologne en 1975, par Keith Jarrett, il représente une vente record dans l’histoire du jazz, à cheval entre deux époques, comme le basculement dans l’ère post-moderne, qui traduit l’existence d’un flou esthétique, d’un état intermédiaire où la notion d’œuvre même paraît peu pertinente. Cette musique, improvisée du début à la fin, ne semble pourtant pas appartenir au « free jazz », ni même vraiment au jazz et évoque à l’écoute un récital « néo-romantique ». Nous nous sommes attachée à en suivre le cheminement, associant l’écoute et l’analyse critique de sa transcription (publiée en 1981). Elle ne relève pas d’une forme dominante : de formes nous ne trouvons qu’ébauches, segments; c’est une œuvre « ouverte », au sens d’une action en relation directe avec son public. Dans cette dramaturgie musicale, on reconnaît les effets d’une rhétorique – au sens de la Grèce antique – et un travail de la mémoire, évoquant l’ars memoria. Par sa grande culture musicale « classique », ses longues années d’étude précédant sa carrière de jazzman, Keith Jarrett occupe une position à part, marquée par la relation inédite entre une maison de disques européenne (ECM) et un musicien, achevant de brouiller les frontières entre les genres et les localisations esthétiques. Köln Concert acquiert ainsi une dimension anthropologique riche en enseignements.

Köln Concert is a useful instrument to compare and articulate contradictory or opposite elements on conceptual sides (composed/improvised, written/oral, savant/popular). Recorded in 1975, this solo performance is the biggest record sale in jazz music. It was published at the very beginning of the post-modernism era in music and belongs to a new aesthetical field, not defined by such notions as « opus » or « work ». This music, totally improvised, can’t be defined as jazz or « free jazz » or « contemporay music », for example, nor « neo-classical music », even if it could sound like some neo-romantic recital. Through a critical analysis of the transcription (published in 1991), we tried to describe the music as an action. Köln Concert has no overall shape, no total structure, just fragmentary forms. It’s an opened work directly connected to an audience. His musical dramaturgy has a rhetorical dimension, as it can be perceived through ancient Greek culture and ars memoria in general. Background: Statistical learning (SL) ability helps individuals to extract probabilistic regularities from input without conscious awareness. There is debate in the literature about whether musical expertise is linked with performance on SL tasks. This thesis investigated the association between musical training and a variety of auditory and cognitive tasks including SL.

Methods: Data from 40 adults (17 musicians) and 50 children (25 musically trained) were collected. Over the course of 4 experiments, auditory and cognitive measurements, as well as behavioural and online electrophysiological assessments of both auditory and visual SL were obtained in this population. SL was evaluated using the embedded triplet paradigm. Auditory processing measures such as frequency discrimination, dichotic listening tasks and cognitive measures such as the digit span task, sustained attention were also evaluated. In children, a measure of musical abilities was also obtained.

Results: Experiments showed significantly better auditory SL in individuals with musictraining. However, individuals with music training did not outperform the control group in visual SL task. Similar results were observed even in children with musical training who have had at least 1.5 years of music training after controlling for socio-economic status, parents' education background across the groups. Musically trained adults and children outperformed their untrained counterparts as they showed distinct responses (larger responses for initial stimulus of the triplets) in the online auditory SL task. Importantly, experiments showed that performance on SL tasks was independent of auditory and cognitive processing measures. Additionally, individual differences in musical abilities were related to the capacity for SL in children. The use of electrophysiological indices such as N1 and N400 as online measures of SL in the two modalities is discussed.

Conclusions: The findings add to the growing literature on the nature of association of music training and other skills such as SL, auditory and cognitive processing skills.

▼ Music and language are forms of human communication using sound. For millennia, playing an instrument has functioned in a similar way to language, as a means of communication and spontaneous expression of thoughts, emotions and ideas via sound. The way of acquiring that skill has paralleled the acquisition of language: through listening and copying. The process of hearing and recognizing musical sound has parallels with thinking and understanding in language. Also known as audiation, this particular type of cognition is a fundamental aspect of traditional music performance expertise. Relatively recently, in most formal education in Western cultures, the way of learning to play a musical instrument has changed radically. In place of listening-copying, the main way of learning and performing on a musical instrument is now almost uniquely through the visual symbols of notation. This new approach to learning to play an instrument is predicated on the idea that using notation renders musicians literate. Some authors question this assumption, and suggest that many musicians may not be literate, because they are not audiating what they are seeing in notation. Rather, they may be decoding, using the visual cues of notation, or other non-audiation cues, to operate the musical instrument. This is thought to contribute to numerous problems in instrumental music learning. Other research is emerging that suggests some traditional musical practices may lead to more efficient audiation. Although there is a great deal of conjecture about the issue of audiation and musical training, much of it is anecdotal in nature. Very little systematic research exists to confirm it. Although there is a wealth of research into many other facets of music performance expertise, we know very little about audiation in musicians or different training factors that may be associated with it. The aim of this study was to investigate whether claims in the literature about audiation in trained musicians were supported by empirical evidence and what background factors may be associated with these abilities. A survey of tertiary music students in all Australian states and territories was carried out in 2012-13. Responses were obtained from 340 students. Two tests of audiation ability were obtained as well as information about individuals’ learning background and pre-existing traits to examine what factors might be associated with audiation. The findings confirmed some of the claims about limited audiation in trained musicians. Only one in four musicians were able to recognize and transcribe a simple heard melody. Without the benefit of perfect pitch, this figure fell to one in five. Classical musicians performed better than popular musicians. Pre-existing traits such as perfect pitch, rather than formal training, appeared to be primarily associated with effective audiation. These results may provide some support for growing calls for a fundamental change to the teaching and learning of instrumental music.
