▼ The author presents a legalism orientation as a problem in ministry for Stonecrest Community Church. The researcher developed the Stonecrest Survey of Discipleship Orientation (SSDO), an instrument to measure movement in a person’s discipleship orientation with relation to legalism. The attitudes of ninety-one responders who participated were measured, first to establish a baseline for the study, and eleven months later to measure their movement in discipleship orientation regarding legalism. With the help of a local church elder who conducted interviews with twelve congregants looking for factors of movement from legalism orientation to abiding faith spiritual orientation, the researcher discovered that the Stonecrest congregation's discipleship orientation shifted due to the influence of its lead pastor's own journey away from legalism. Based on these findings, the author made ministry recommendations.

▼ Beginning in 1999 the Federal Courts experienced a great influx of litigation over the constitutionality of a government's display of the Ten Commandments. This dissertation examines the causes and consequences of this litigation. In the first part of the dissertation I examine changes in Establishment Clause doctrine which first make a government's display of religious symbols a possible subject of litigation and, later, make the Decalogue an attractive symbol for conservatives to defend before the federal judiciary. In the second part of the dissertation I examine two counties from Tennessee who elected to post the Ten Commandments and were subsequently sued by the ACLU. I conclude that participants to either side of the conflict situate their political and legal activity in mythic conceptions of American Republicanism. Both posting the Ten Commandments and the resistance to such posting are attempts to preserve or return to these mythic conceptions. The last part of the dissertation is normative jurisprudence. Using the results from parts one and two I offer suggestion as to how the Supreme Court might alter its doctrine so as to align it with the value of equal citizenship. In this regard, Establishment Clause jurisprudence emphasizes the distinction between religious purposes and secular purposes. This distinction ought to be muted. Instead, the Supreme Court should promulgate doctrine designed to protect equal citizenship.

▼ The issue that this study addresses is twofold: the first part of the issue is the current prohibitive language of the Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church in regards to the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender and Queer identified community within the context of the North Alabama Conference, and the second part is how this language has impacted the narrative of this particular community's experience of the United Methodist Church. The methodology will evaluate the effect that the current language of doctrinal standards has on the LGBTQ community, examine the plight of this community as well as those who are against change in doctrine, and illustrate the need for a new way forward that offers truly inclusive ministries and welcomes full participation in the United Methodist Church. The data gathered for this ministerial project was the result of a questionnaire randomly distributed at the 2015 Annual Conference of North Alabama that measured levels of offensiveness in response to current language and amendments proposed by the Community Table to the Book of Discipline. These proposals will be presented at the General Conference of the United Methodist Church in 2016. The questionnaire was designed in light of Charles E. Osgood's semantic differential that makes the assumption that the meaning of all things, including abstract thought, can be measured using adjectival polar opposites. The findings of this aspect of measurement showed that the North Alabama Conference would be receptive to the idea of amending language within our doctrine to provide a more hospitable experience of church for the LGBTQ community. Another aspect of the ministerial project was to provide an opportunity for the LGBTQ community to tell their own story in their own words through the use of narrative research. Six LGBTQ identified members of the North Alabama Conference were interviewed and shared their negative and positive experiences of the United Methodist Church. From evaluation of the data received, there were several commonalities across the narratives and the following themes emerged: 1) the need for inclusive and empowering language that encourages both members of the LGBTQ community and other church members to work toward common goals and 2) the need for more avenues that offer opportunity for spiritual growth that embraces the LGBTQ community and focuses on developing disciples for Christ. Although it is not within the scope of the project, the information gathered through questionnaires and interviews were compiled and will be submitted to the North Alabama Conference delegation to the General Conference of 2016 in Portland, Oregon. Hopefully this will serve as a useful tool to make the delegation aware of the voices of a silenced community within the Church that needs to be heard.

Much has been written about Qur’ānic references to Jesus (‘Īsā in Arabic), yet no work has been done on the structure or formal analysis of the numerous references to ‘Īsā in the Hadīth, that is, the collection of writings that report the sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad. In effect, non- Muslims and Muslim scholars neglect the full range of Prophet Muhammad’s statements about Jesus that are in the Hadīth. The dissertation’s main thesis is that an examination of the Hadīths’ reports of Muhammad’s words about and attitudes toward ‘Īsā will lead to fuller understandings about Jesus-‘Īsā among Muslims and propose to non-Muslims new insights into Christian tradition about Jesus. In the latter process, non-Muslims will be encouraged to re-examine past hostile views concerning Muhammad and his words about Jesus. A minor thesis is that Western readers in particular, whether or not they are Christians, will be aided to understand Islamic beliefs about ‘Īsā, prophethood, and eschatology more fully. In the course of the dissertation, Hadīth studies will be enhanced by a full presentation of Muhammad’s words about and attitudes toward Jesus-‘Īsā. While several non-eschatological references to Jesus appear the Hadīth and will be referenced, the dissertation focuses especially on Prophet Muhammad’s statements concerning ‘Īsā’s parousia (return to earth) and his messianic roles toward the End Times. It is anticipated that the work will contribute to further studies about correlations of ‘Īsā and Muhammad in Islamic and Christian theology, as well as to interreligious examinations of the Hadīth traditions.

Said Nursi (1878-1960) was the most influential Muslim scholar, intellectual, and activist in the history of modern Turkey. His ideas and activities greatly contributed to the resurgence of Islam in the country. In fact, his influence had a global reach as a result of the initiatives of the grassroots movement he founded. The existing literature on Nursi usually dealt with his contributions to the interfaith dialogue. Few researchers paid attention to Nursi’s relationship with Sufism. They generally suggested that Nursi was not a Sufi while having some sympathy for it. However, they did not examine his works to detect possible Sufi ideas in Nursi’s thought. In my research, I analyze Nursi’s life and thought in the context of larger Sufi tradition. I trace the Sufi influences in his magnum opus, the Risale, about his view of Allah, the cosmos, and humanity. In my search for Sufi worldview in Nursi’s books, I primarily rely on the central Sufi concepts of tashbīh, tanzīh, karâmât, dhikr, sohbet, and service and try to demonstrate that Sufism had a considerable influence on him during the second part of his life which he spent in seclusion. I also show that his understanding and application of these concepts differed from traditional Sufi groups. He presented the Sufi thought and practices in a way that was relevant to his primarily Turkish readers. Hence, I attempt to portray Nursi as an intellectual who rearticulated traditional Sufi thought for his modern audience. I argue that Nursi reflected both popular and intellectual aspects of that tradition in his writings.

▼ This report documents the process undertaken by an urban church in Hartford, CT to develop a trained, theologically grounded and empowered group of lay leaders to discern possible alternative visions for the future of the congregation. One goal of the project was to develop the leadership skills of the participants in order to participate in the long-term process of leading the congregation from its present building- and clergy-centered, institutional paradigm to a more outward-looking, lay-driven and mission-centered church grounded in the principles of our baptismal covenant. The operating belief was that to be sustainable in the 21st century, the church must rely less on professional and salaried staff and more on committed, well-trained and non-stipended lay missioners. From a theological perspective, it is the belief of the author that such a future direction encourages the church to follow Jesus' call for all of the baptized to move from discipleship to apostleship in living the Good News. A significant element of this project was the intentional acknowledgement of the role that diversity – racial, ethnic, socio-economic, educational level, gender identity, age, etc. – traditionally has played in the identity of the congregation and the pivotal role it might play as the congregations envisions its future. Taking the image of "The Body of Christ" from 1 Corinthians 12, the operative belief is that "The Gospel" is understood and lived out depending upon one's personal experience of the Gospel. By facilitating opportunities for members of the congregation to share and appreciate each member's lived experience of the Gospel, it was anticipated that members would experience the richness of the Gospel as Jesus implies in The Great Commission of Matthew 28:19.

▼ The question concerning polytheism among some ancient Israelites and a later mono- theistic YHWH is seen by some to be an evolutionary development. The present writer will present an interpretation of the Tanakh that challenges this concept. Monotheism is not as strict as is often assumed. The writers of the Tanakh did not present YHWH as amidst gods early and as a sole deity later. Interpretation of “monotheistic” texts do not militate against the notion of other gods. Rather than denying the existence of these gods, these texts show the incomparability of YHWH. A theistic realm vacuous of any other deity was never intended by the writers of the Tanakh. It is the contention of the present writer that a re-evaluation is in order concerning YHWH’s relationship to other gods as a qualified monotheism.

▼ The writer of this dissertation was in a very unique situation within the United Methodist Church. He was faced with as the first part of his title says, “Building a multicultural congregation.” In Chapter I we find that he lifts up the fact that the most segregated hour in the United States of America is the hour of worship for Christians every Sunday morning. In particular the writer was specifically concerned with Central Park United Methodist Church in Birmingham, Alabama where he was assigned as senior pastor. He was immediately faced the issue of a church in a community that had changed due to white flight. Chapter II looks at the ministry issue that faced Central Park. The researcher had to honestly look at how to respond to a dying church, a church that has a sanctuary that seats 500 people but only welcomed 45-50 people to service on Sunday. Previously, the church had failed to look at the change of environment and had not made any steps towards inclusivity of the changed neighborhood that was now predominately African American. The researcher look at a systematic way offered by Robert Dale and Martin Samnen of tracking the growth of the church. As well as Mark Chaves’ book Congregations in America. It was in the reading of the aforesaid book he found the undergirding of how to deal with the issue of racism by providing for Central Park a model for racial reconciliation in worship. It was detenmned that a ministry of empowerment and spiritual growth was needed in order for Central Park to make any transition. Other resource matenal used to help address the ministry issue were Transforming Mission Paradigm S/il/is in Theology ofMission (American Society of Missiology) by David Bosch and The Church Enslaved. A Spirituality of Racial Reconciliation We find the literature review in Chapter III that considered for addressing the issue of multiculturalism and diversity in the society at large. Donald McGarvan was looked at for his missiological perspective and Charles Taylor for the empincal perspective. For the theoretical perspective the researcher looked at Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann. He reviewed the theological perspective from Alfred North Whitehead’s point of view The researcher was drawn to the Book of Matthew (28:18-20) in regards to the biblical perspective. For the purpose of clarity and understanding he used the Contemporary English Version for interpretation It is in Matthew where the great commission from the Lord is lifted about disciple making. Jesus talked about nations that need to be discipled, thus people from all different backgrounds, ethnics, colors and genders were included. The researcher felt that Matthew brought another alternative to the two existing contexts at Central Park. Chapter IV looks at A Strategic Model for Ministry. ▼ The National Guard and Reserve components of the United States Armed forces are not fully able to receive access to treatment for post traumatic stress disorder (PSTD) to the same degree as their Active component counter partners. One of the main reasons for this occurrence is that Active Duty military soldiers return from the war zone to their Army Post communities. The Active Component have available to them all of the Army’s resources and personnel at their deposal. But National Guard and Reserve components return back to their local communities without access to the resources and personnel to assist them with their PTSD related problems. If the resources are available they often fail to take advantage of them, because of their lack of knowledge of the available resources. Additionally, the shame and stigma associated with receiving mental health assistance often causes soldiers to refuse to accept the available help. Families, churches, and communities often don’t have the knowledge base for accessing resources for the soldiers’ treatment. This Doctor of Ministry project developed a training program to train families, churches, and communities to recognize the signs and symptoms of PTSD. This program will provide them with avenues to access and receive the available resources. The researcher believe that if families, churches and communities receive awareness training about PTSD, service members will have people they trust assisting them with their war related problems upon their return.

▼ Of the many challenges that Zimbabwe is facing, the HIV and AIDS pandemic ranks most threatening. This project draws attention and focuses on set-ups probing into the nature of the approaches to combat the pandemic. Given the issues surrounding the spread of the virus, including, for example, stigmatization/discrimination, sexuality, models of transmission, cultural beliefs and practices, trauma, health-care services, aid organizations as well as governance issues. People raise questions that cut across the societal belief terrains on the one hand, and scientific/technological advancements on the other. This project explores how to empower women and children with HIV and AIDS and proposes eight healthy practices and a year- program outline for in- depth understanding and assimilation of caring awareness designed for children in Sunday school, youth in Bible Study, and adults in women’s/men’s fellowship groups. This project comprises of four chapters and uses library research, including reviews of published studies, books and articles written from the perspective of women affected with HIV and AIDS and caring for AIDS patients. The first chapter introduces and delineates the nature and scope of the project. The second chapter provides the overview of the history of Zimbabwe, describes the current state of women and children and causes of HIV and AIDS, and transformation through evangelism model in relationship with Atlanta Interfaith AIDS Network program (AlAN). The third chapter highlights the positive and negative role of religion in Zimbabwe, definition of HIV and AIDS in the African tradition, and negative role of Christians in Zimbabwe. The fourth chapter identifies theology of reconstruction and concept of “Jesus the only way to salvation.” The fifth chapter addresses the ministry title, which is Pastoral Leadership, Theology, Healthy Congregations and Community, and liberating people from different problems. The sixth chapter offers the outline of the project. It involves the primary settin~ secondary setting, and producing a complete dissertation of the total project. The seventh chapter sums up the necessity of healthy congregation in the 21S1 century, and needs of transformation in the nature of HIV and AIDS. The eighth chapters are the bibliographical References.

▼ This study examined conflict transformation as a viable method to resolve conflict and a viable tool to train church leaders to transform conflict into sustainable peace. Conflict between congregants, specifically between leaders, has become an especially relevant issue in the church. The church tends to view conflict as abysmal failure—an embarrassment that should be hidden. The reality is that it is only through conflict that one learns and grows. The growth edge is where authentic, honest relationships are developed, ego-selves restrained, and ego-groups transcended. The author developed a training module titled “Conflict Transformation in the Church” to explore the attitudes of the leaders toward conflict. The overall training goal was to examine and change the attitudes of leaders viewing conflict from a negative perspective; i.e., avoid it and end it quickly, to an attitude of viewing conflict from a positive perspective; i.e., spiritual process that brings people closer to God and each other and sustains peace. The training consisted of one nine-hour training session for forty participants involving leaders of church ministries and some members of ministries. The session included video and audio recording, group interaction, and discussion. The researcher used data from participants’ pre and post surveys and interviews to analyze changes in attitudes and qualitative techniques to develop common themes/categories of information for the interviews.
Analysis of the Data Provided
Overall, this study supported previous research on this topic, which concluded that if church ministry leaders supported a coherent conflict transformation framework, their influence upon this foundation could be instrumental in changing the relationships, attitudes, interests, and discourses of the entire congregation. The dissertation’s hypothesis is that interaction between individuals belonging to the church, coupled with religious peace traditions, such as forgiveness and reconciliation, will reduce interpersonal and inter-ministry conflict. The researcher addressed various characteristics and manifestations of conflict by examining the root causes over a long period with the focus on transforming negative ways of dealing with conflict into positive, constructive ones. While the goal was a success of changing the lens by which leaders viewed conflict, there was not enough time to determine if the participants would actually practice the principles. Thus, in the future, the researcher intends to continue to present this church and others with subsequent training workshops on the same topic, “Conflict Transformation in the Church.”

▼ The purpose of this project was to examine carefully how the arts (music, mime, dance, and drama) could potentially enhance the spirituality of youth between the ages of 13 and 19. The researcher’s aim was to use the arts to make the stories and messages of the Bible come “alive” in a creative and innovative manner. Afler meeting with a select group of leaders on August 27, 2009, regarding the needs of the youth, the researcher moved forward with the assurance of membership support regarding the proposed Doctor of Ministry of Project based on the arts. Throughout the process, the researcher used every opportunity available to capture and evaluate dramatic presentations at the Greater Solid Rock Baptist Church. The span of the Doctor of Ministry Project lasted seven months (April-October 2011), with six activities in the form of dramatic presentationsbeing conducted over that period of time. In this document, the author gives the reader detailed information regarding the process used to reach the researcher’s final destination. Below are brief highlights from each chapter in order to give the reader a general sense of the process used to compile and complete information relative to the Doctor of Ministry Project. Chapter I gives the reader a general introduction to each succeeding chapter in this document. Although the information in the introductory chapter is not presented in detail, the author provides key points regarding material appearing subsequently. Chapter II focuses on the Ministry Context/Issue, primarily on the demographics of the Greater Solid Rock Baptist Church and related social statistics. Chapter III explores the Biblical literature that informs the Doctor of Ministry project, identifying key scriptures that relate to youth and how youth are able to overcome obstacles in life. Chapter IV shines the light of research on theological literature, mainly focusing on how Biblical characters such as Goliath can be re-imagined as social influences such as drugs, sex, and alcohol. Key statistics are given regarding the use of these elements by our youth (ages 13-19) before marriage and how this use is impacting their education and spiritual development. Chapter V provides empirical and theoretical information to support the researcher’s position regarding using the arts to enhance the spirituality of the youth, along with professional statements from artists and teachers in the arts espousing this position. Chapter VI focuses on the actual Doctor of Ministry Project and all that went into making this project a success, offering a “How To” listing for coordinating, producing, and directing an arts program/play in the local ministry setting. Finally, in Chapter VII the researcher reflects on the entire process and shares final statistics from evaluation of the surveys submitted to the congregation during each dramatic presentation or activity connected with the Doctor of Ministry Project.

In the past decade, demand for emotional, pastoral, and other support for veterans returning from the Middle East war zone, as well as their families, has escalated dramatically. In today’s military environment, service members and their families are experiencing an unprecedented number of extended deployments. The average deployment for an active duty soldier is approximately 12 to 15 months and 18 months for members of the U.S. Army Reserve and Army National Guard. Soldiers are experiencing multiple deployments with little time in between which can be a particularly stressful time for soldiers and their families, as they prepare for deployments, cope with the separation, and deal with unexpected challenges upon return. The local community is particularly important for members of the reserve component and veterans who are often miles away from the traditional military resources offered on a military installation. This study reviewed literature on concepts, strategies and programs involved in addressing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for returning combat veterans. The researcher reviewed current studies on military and religious PTSD programs. Using case study methodology, this study examined the emotional, social, religious, family, health and financial impacts of war on veterans who experienced PTSD and their experiences in obtaining pastoral care and counseling from their religious institution(s). Interviews were conducted with ten military personnel who have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder or anxiety disorder as a result of their combat experiences. Veterans selected included active and inactive military from four wars, in which the United States was engaged. Research questions examined the motivation for participants to seek pastoral care for their PTSD and the extent to which participants felt their needs were met. Impact of participating in an “undeclared war” and its influence on participants’ lives was also examined. Major findings of the study revealed that:
Veterans have spiritual wounds that have eroded their capacity to trust.
Early in these young recruits’ military career, they are trained to feel and be physically fit. Nonetheless, basic training cannot prepare them for the reality and/or terror they encounter when engaging in combat.
The stress of constantly engaging enemy troops and the fear of being engaged is often horrific. Memories of such warfare are agonizing.
When soldiers return from combat, often the impact of their experiences is time-delayed. This causes confusion and results in confusion for both the soldiers and their families.
There are limited (often none) resources for veterans living away from military bases.
A pastor, viewed as God’s representative, may not be well-received.
Nevertheless, the fact that clergy do represent a possible source for reconnection with God provides an opportunity to accepting veterans in the midst of their doubt, cynicism, and self-loathing.

▼ There are a number of hospice patients and their families struggling through the end-of-life journey without the aid and comfort of a faith community. Some of these families have been separated from faith communities for many years. Hospice provides spiritual care to all patients who will accept chaplain support. However, there is still a place for the local church to join in the care plan for hospice patients and their families. As a Heartland Hospice chaplain and local pastor the researcher became aware there was a divide between Heartland Hospice and local churches in the area. This project was designed to build a bridge between hospice and the church by preparing church members to become hospice volunteers. The project design was to assist church members to dispel their myths about hospice, address unresolved fear of death and dying, and realize the need for a hospice volunteer ministry at the church. Project participants gained knowledge and experience in being hospice volunteers through hands on caring for ten hospice-patients from their church membership. This project has been instrumental in transforming Mount Carmel’s current hospice patient ministry within the congregation.

▼ This dissertation presents liberative Black preaching (LBP) as an optimal homiletic model designed to function as a therapeutic intervention for African descent persons in the Black church context. Built upon the foundation of a Black theological anthropology, this dissertation addresses Black self-identity that is informed by a universal African worldview (UAW). The dissertation argues that there is a recognizable diversity of contextuality among White and non-White persons and that it is possible to qualitatively describe generalizable contours of experience among Black people in the United States based on the particularity of the culture and the Black encounter with racism/White supremacy. The thoughts and feelings that emerge from this cultural encounter are appropriate for Africentric theological reflection. Historical evidence of the unfolding of Black thought with reference to Black religiosity and spirituality is presented as a preamble to the construction of the liberative Black preaching model. The dissertation employs a mixed research method. A qualitative methodological paradigm is primarily employed, while quantitative tools are used in the data gathering process of the study. Variables were established as constitutive elements necessary for the construction of sermons that have therapeutic value for African descent persons through collection of data during “applied research experiences” in six different Black church settings over a two month period. Analysis of the data indicates a generally positive impact on the cognitive and affective processes of the hearers of LBP. The operating thesis of the dissertation asserts that liberative Black preaching~s concentration on counterbalancing the affects of White supremacy upon African descent persons can alleviate Black pain, ameliorate Black suffering and function therapeutically similarly to the way in which conventional pastoral counseling functions. The operating assumption reveals the significance of therapeutic intentionality with respect to sermon construction by Black preachers given the relative importance of the preaching moment in the Black church context. The opportunity for regular, systematic intervention in the form of LBP provided by the voluntary participation in weekly communal worship experiences proves critical in the process of attaining optimal health which is “the best possible [state of] emotional, intellectual, physical, spiritual, and socio economic aliveness” for African descent persons.

▼ This project was to done to begin the implementation of contextual theological education to pastors, ministers, and Christian workers in their geographical locales, and to fulfill the mandate for theological education within the Progressive Primitive Baptist Church. Its initial focus is Progressive Primitive Baptists residing in the jurisdiction of the Primitive Baptist State Convention of Florida. The project consisted of three years of preparatory work which led to the establishment of an extension unit in Tallahassee, Florida (August 2012).
Preparatory work began through the Florida State Primitive Baptist Church School Congress in April 2005. Members of the Church School Congress provided the dialog to ascertain the needs of the Convention. Those needs were examined in light of the historical origin of the Progressive Primitive Baptist movement before and immediately following the institution of slavery in North America. Surveys and lectures that dealt with both secular and theological education were used to measure the desires of the initial focus group whose number was one hundred and fifty plus persons.
Near the end of the project a lecture series was held in Tallahassee, Florida at the site of the proposed extension in order to share the mandates for accredited contextual theological education. The lectures were done with participation from the educational leaders from the two associations that govern the Tallahassee, Florida region churches. Their focus was theories of education, the mandate for theological education, and contextual theological education. The number who participated in the lectures totaled about thirty persons per night. The three nights totaled ninety persons.
Following the lecture series twenty persons signed up for classes. The initial class enrolled six students with the expectations of a large increase for the second semester. Documentation is in place to record the progress of the unit as well as the project.

▼ This project was designed to address the reduction and prevention of violence of African- American youth ages (12-16) within the Gresham Park Community of Decatur, Georgia. Moral development and character development are used interchangeably.
A curriculum was developed for youth and parents to assist them to help young people in reaching their potential regarding moral character to avoid the pitfalls of violence. The underlying principles of the study were moral character, spiritual formation, and personal responsibility. The major premise of the project was that if youth feel good about themselves and feel a connection to God, parents, school, and community, then youth will behave better, love themselves and God, and they will make better decisions to negotiate life in regards to nonviolence as opposed to violence.
The study was conducted at Flat Shoals United Methodist Church, and Cedar Grove High School. The total number of youth participating in this study is twenty two. Eight adults observed, supported, and occasionally gave verbal input. The training took place over a sixteen week period. This study indicates that there was a significant increase in the moral and character development among the youth.

▼ This Doctor of Ministry project is a Case- guided study of a mega- African American church that developed a Bible study used for church wide identity formation. The study was conducted during completion of a Doctor of Ministry degree. It is a study of a church facing the formidable challenges that they must face as a church serving a community with complex and varied needs.
A case -guided research was chosen for this Doctor of Ministry project because it encompassed the process that was essential to investigation of a church searching for its mission identity.
This was a study of a church that was intentional about their methodologies, scripturally commanded requirements about church, preaching, discipline, baptism and many other biblical practices. Church and worship can't take just any form. In missional churches, those biblical forms are central, but things like worship style, evangelism methods, attire, service times, locations, and many other man-made customs are not chosen simply based on the preference of the members. Instead, the forms are best determined by their effectiveness in a specific cultural context.
This project presents an organized and systematic form for understanding the process of discovery the researcher experienced during the development and execution of a church wide identity examination. Case study research guided the basic research design.

▼ This dissertation will address the implementation of a Community Outreach Ministry at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Stockbridge, Georgia. The working hypothesis of this project is that Mt. Olive is called to use its resources to care for and serve the local community, and in so doing, the church will help to meet the needs within its local community. Therefore, the scope of this project is to establish a Community Outreach Ministry at Mt. Olive that will primarily serve the elderly within the community who are facing issues of food insecurity. The goal of the project is to involve Mt. Olive in outreach ministry with the hope that this involvement will ultimately change the culture of Mt. Olive; that going forward the church will faithfully allocate a portion of its resources (financial, human, and property) to consistently meet the needs of the local community.
Theologically, the researcher believes that the example and ethic of Jesus Christ make it clear that churches are called to reach beyond their walls and serve those in need, for through the church’s outreach efforts, and via the power of the Holy Spirit, lives will be transformed and needs will be met. In short, the researcher will show that the bible clearly addresses the mandate for community outreach (Matt. 25:34-36); that the bible makes it clear that: 1) the church is called to reach out to those in need; 2) Christ, via the power of the Holy Spirit, will bring about transformation to those in need; and 3) God will provide the resources necessary to serve those in need.
The researcher’s project was conducted in three phases over a period of 31 consecutive weeks - February through August, 2012: Phase 1: Centering – Rooting the ministry in a theology of serving the "least of these" (Matt. 25:40); Phase 2: Critiquing- Identifying the needs of the community; and Phase 3: Constructing- Executing a plan of action to mobilize the ministry volunteers. The overall success and effectiveness of the project was measured by the following five (5) goals:
1. Is the Community Outreach Ministry operational?
2. Are at least 50 seniors being served?
3. Are there at least two (2) seniors from the community working with the ministry?
4. Has the Community Outreach Ministry formed a partnership with an organization that advocates on behalf seniors and those facing issues of food insecurity?
5. Is the ministry meeting the needs of the seniors served and has change occurred in the church? Have the ministry volunteers experienced positive change from working in the ministry? Are they more committed to community outreach?
The researcher also provided reflections regarding the limitations and lessons learned from the project, as well as future implications as a result of the project.

▼ Women in leadership have had a difficult time rising into positions of leadership in the church. Qualified women in the local church are not realizing their dreams and or achieving their goals because of barriers which include sexism in the church and society, cultural differences and the inner struggles through various expected roles within their family structure. Women in the local church need proper nurturing, guidance and or support in the articulation or the manifestation of their ministerial visions and goals.
There is very little data available regarding women in leadership. Research suggests that even though women make up the majority of membership in the church, women are disproportionately represented in the leadership of the church. Research further suggests that even though Americans are comfortable with women as leaders, relatively small numbers of women make it to top leadership positions relative to their male counterparts.
The conceptual framework integrated ideas from theological, biblical and theoretical perspectives. The theological perspective focused on several theologians within the categories of the theology of liberation, feminist theology, Black feminist theology and womanist theology. The biblical perspective was explored through the arguments about women in leadership from the egalitarian and complementarian viewpoints. The biblical perspective further discussed women in leadership within the biblical context. Finally, the theoretical perspective investigated the theory of subordination as it relates to women in leadership. The theory of subordination was explored in three sections: (a) the biblical theory of subordination, (b) the cultural theory of subordination and (c) the pastoral domination theory of subordination.
The purpose of this project is to encourage and inspire women who have the potential to be leaders by assisting them to develop leadership skills, enabling them to step forward as true leaders in the church using a "Wo-Mentoring" approach.
The research project was conducted at Saint John C.M.E. Church in Monticello, Georgia. Women in this congregation were involved in a program that will help them envision their goals, identify the barriers that preclude them from reaching their goals, and help them utilize the voices of other women to give encouragement as future leaders. This program enabled these women to develop skills to process their issues, understand themselves, and visualize goals assisting them in creating a workable road map toward these goals. The intended results are changes from within - transformation. The women should be different in their approach to leadership in various ministries.

▼ This dissertation project addressed the implementation of a Dialogue on the topic of Sexuality in the Black Pentecostal church, at Church of the Lord Jesus Christ Today, Inc. (COTLJCT) in Douglasville, GA. In continuing the ministry of Jesus Christ, all Christian leaders, including leaders in the Black Pentecostal church have a great responsibility to imitate Christ through their actions. While providing ministerial care that addresses moral issues encountered by the Christian community and the world, Christian leaders must always consider the question, What Would Jesus Do? The contemplation of this inquiry is necessary towards delivering the type of service and care provided by Jesus. This raises the question whether Black Pentecostal church leaders respond to moral issues within the church community in a manner that is reflective of how Jesus handled matters during his ministry. For the purposes of this dialogue, are leaders of the Black Pentecostal church responding to the issue of women and unwed pregnancies in ways that indicate they have contemplated the question What Would Jesus Do? Are leaders of the Black Pentecostal church responsive to this issue in ways that demonstrate the love, compassion, and forgiveness of Jesus? The response to these questions is a resounding “NO.”
Years of personal observation in the Black Pentecostal church have revealed harsh treatment by leaders, and the Christian community towards women and sexuality issues. This punitive behavior, normally surrounding the occurrences of non-marital pregnancies, has consisted in women being openly shamed, alienated, ostracized, and rejected from Christian fellowship. These actions and outcomes, which are not reflective of the ministry of Jesus nor his love, compassion, and forgiveness, warrant a serious discussion. Black Pentecostal church leaders have failed to construct a dialogue on this subject, as it affects the lives of their parishioners.
The working hypothesis of this project is that leaders in the Black Pentecostal church have a great task by God to assist in the spiritual growth and development of his people. As such, the Black Pentecostal church must be at the vanguard in instituting a dialogue on women and sexuality. In particular, these discussions should address the sexist and negative treatment directed towards women for their sexual encounters and pregnancies from non-marital relationships. Leaders in the Black church have a responsibility to create an atmosphere where sexuality issues can be freely discussed in the church. These discussions should lead to the restoration and reconciliation of women in their relationship with God and the Church community. However, in times past and presently, congregational leaders in the Black church have been “silent” on the topic of sexuality. In the midst of their silence, leaders have openly condemned women for non-marital affairs, and have ostracized, marginalized, and rejected them from any involvement in ministry. ▼ This Doctor of Ministry project is a study of A Model for Empowering Rivertown United Methodist Church (UMC) to Address the Addiction of Alcohol in the church and the surrounding community. The purpose of this project is to demonstrate to Rivertown UMC and Rocky Head UMC how churches can reach out to the addicted community in order to assist the alcoholics with recovery from their addictions. This project will address the problems of alcohol addiction. The project includes members of Rivertown UMC, Rocky Head UMC and Rama Community Church of Palmetto, Georgia. The project was designed and implemented by the researcher. The project consisted of seven sessions of structured experiences at Rivertown UMC and three training sessions. Two of the training meetings were held at Brookhaven UMC located in Northeast Atlanta, Georgia, where Don Shannon leads three alcohol and drug recovery groups. All other meetings were conducted at Rivertown UMC. The study has shown that a transformed church can impact the alcohol addicted community in an important and potentially transforming manner. The results of the model were evaluated by qualitative analysis and have shown that the participants grew in positive self-image, self-confidence and self-worth. The Alcohol Recovery Project has provided a model of ministry that will continue to be active after the implementation and completion of this project.

▼ This dissertation will address the implementation of New Life Christian Academy (NLCA), a Christian Education School, produced out of New Life Deliverance Temple (NLDT), in St. Helena Island, South Carolina. The desire was to target students who have a desire in educational and spiritual achievements regardless of race, creed or religion. Parents who have become disillusioned with the Beaufort County public school system will be presented the progress of the current students at NLCA, who have transferred from the public school setting. The researcher founded the school by merging a homeschool run by a parent of NLDT and a new school which had never been operational. The advantage the researcher has concerning this project is that he was responsible for the grassroots implementation orchestrating every step from changing the county code allowing a school to locating modular buildings to house the school.
NLDT is not considered a ‘mega ministry’ (2,000 or more membership) nor is the church located in a major metropolis, but on a dirt road in a rural section of St. Helena Island. Though the church possessed meager funds, this lack of capital did not prevent the pursuit of building a Christian school on church property. The researcher formed a board to assist in searching for rules and regulations so that the school will be in compliance. The first teacher hired by NLCA was Mrs. Mary Bolles who started her homeschool and was very well versed in Christian and secular education. NLCA has formed relationships between parent, teacher and student resulting in increased communication. The empirical data to assist in developing the foundation for the school will include: (a) Surveys conducted showing how the children have transitioned into the Christian/ Secular educational setting, (b) Showing how other Christian Schools operate within Beaufort Schools, (c) Data which will confirm the weaknesses of area county schools, and (d) surveys which will aid in satisfying the needs of students, staff and parents.
Theologically, the Biblical basis for the school was discovered in Daniel the first chapter, showing four youths who had been forcibly removed from their native land and were successful in enemy territory, not compromising their Jewish values. The objective remains to parallel this Biblical past into a current motif which will allow the student to experience holistic curriculums of education, enabling them to meet life’s challenges, utilizing a Christian perspective.

▼ When looking at the churchgoing experience of African American youth and ways of ministering to them in a holistic way, it is important to realize that the youth are truly the future of our congregations. In order to address the issues and the needs that have been presented by the teens of Zion Hill Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA and Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Nashville, Tennessee, the researcher of this dissertation developed a project (and consequently) a therapeutic tool that would serve to provide a safe (confidential, non-judgmental, therapeutic) space of free self-expression, to foster healthy mental and social development, as well as, a healthy and effective way for youth to express their feelings, thoughts, desires, and aspirations. This project was meant to set a precedence of palatable therapy in church settings, and had a two-fold purpose of not only providing a safe space for free-expression, but also, it served to close the cross-generational chasm of misunderstanding and miscommunication, and opening up opportunities for an intergenerational connection between the teens and the middle-aged adults of the churches.
To carry out her project, the researcher used as her foundation the principles of in-depth pastoral care and psychodrama. She then combined them into a palatable therapeutic tool coined as pastoraldrama. The premise of both the researchers project and of this dissertation is the understanding that in-depth pastoral care and psychodrama (and consequently pastoraldrama) can be used effectively to foster better intergenerational relationships, attend to the holistic needs of today’s Black youth, enhance the churchgoing experience of today’s Black youth, and to help today’s Black youth feel they have a place, a purpose, and a voice in their families, their community, their churches, and ultimately in the future of society as a whole.
In developing her model the researcher used various authors, theories, and sciences to argue for the importance and usefulness of this project. She used various resources and defended her point theologically, theoretically, biblically, historically, and empirically. The researcher discovered the presented ministry needs through observation, communication with members of each church, research panels, and intergenerational workshops conducted while working as a youth worker in the congregations. Her target age groups for this project were the teens of the congregations in conjunction with the middle-aged adults of the congregations. At Zion Hill, the teen participants were of the ages 16-18, and at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church her teen participants were of the ages 13-15.

▼ Across the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) connectional church, there appears to be a widening gap between an ageing population of members and the youth and young adult population. This widening gap manifests itself in millennials insignificant participation in church worship and church activities. As this gap continues to grow, the denomination does not appear to have significant strategies to address it. At the inception of this study, the millennial attendance at Sunday morning worship services and at other church related activities at Linden-Shorts CME church, in Atlanta, Georgia, was very inconsistent and at times almost non-existent.
This study is important in that it adds to the body of research which addresses attendance patterns of millennials in mainline denominations, with an emphasis on African American church attendance and participation in church related activities. This task was accomplished by using the ethnography research method. During the course of this study I met with millennials and participated in open discussions with them to gather data about which offers their perception of church (worship, involvement etc.); and other pertinent data that is relevant to this study. In addition to the documenting information related to the group conversations with the CME millennials, a summary of the findings from thirty interview questionnaires that millennials completed is a part of the research findings. Additionally, I reviewed some of the most recent scholarly research which addressed religious attendance patterns of the millennial generation. This information was very important because it explained the impact of culture, Society and competing Worldviews which also influence how millennials perceive religious institutions.
The findings for this study were based on the ethnography research method. Interview questionnaires were completed by thirty millennials. Out of the thirty millennials, nineteen of the millennials belonged to the Christian Methodist Episcopal denomination, nine of the millennials belonged to other denominations and two did not specify a denomination.
Based on the results of the interview questionnaires, the millennials attend Worship services and other church related activities. However, they do not attend every Sunday. Various reasons were given for the inconsistent attendance such as, resting, spending time with friends and family, and preparing for the work week ahead. Millennials are serious about spirituality, but church is not necessary for them to honor traditional practices. Millennials are seeking meaningful worship with relevant sermons and contemporary aspects of worship. The review of literature also points to intergenerational Worship and congregational life as a way to re-engage the millennial generation to the church.

▼ The membership of St. Paul AME Church needs an increase in spiritual formation. Christian spiritual formation is the process of being conformed to the image of Christ for the sake of others. Faith practices such as meditation, worship, prayer, solitude, and service aid Christians in collaborating with God's transformative work to develop spiritual formation. The project consisted of a twenty-person group of committed teachers, class leaders and clergy participating in five preparing sessions, taught every other week, then facilitating classes. There were three resources used to evaluate the qualitative effectiveness of the project: 1) a participant observer, 2) a pre-project survey and post-project Survey, and 3) an independent expert.
The sessions included video and audio media, group discussion and interaction, role-play, prayer, devotional periods, and group assignments. There were handouts issued for guidance, clarification, and reference.
The overall hypothesis was by preparing teachers, class leaders, and clergy to instruct faith practices, will result in increased spiritual formation. The overall goal is for the procedure to encourage and allow spiritual formation in their lives, throughout the community life of the church, and in the personal lives of the members. While attaining the goal of increased spiritual formation in the lives of the participants, the scope of this project did not cover the spiritual formation of those outside the participant group.

▼ The purpose of this project was to introduce servant leadership within the Fruitland /Allen Charge to encourage healthy leadership skills within the church. We worked on developing a leadership style, which included more people in making decisions, improving listening skills, working together as a better unit and empowering others to see their potential for being leaders. We started the process with ten members of the Bible study class. These ten people also took the Trinity Western University Servant Leadership Self-Assessment tool. Only three persons demonstrated the qualities of a servant leader, however, the others scored high on leadership, but just not servant leaders. The session began with reading and studying of Mark 8-10. We learned servant leadership is a mandate from God given to Jesus and taught to the disciples that they are first servants of God. We also did a Bible study on the book Spiritual Leadership Principles of Excellence for Every Believer by J. Oswald Sanders. We also learned to change the leadership style of pastor and membership will take time because servant leadership is a style of leadership developed over time and persons must make a conscious effort to change their leadership style.
This pastor received a new outlook on ministry and found new techniques were not the answer. This pastor needed more of an understanding of how small churches in rural areas work and the importance history of a church and members. Change is possible but it takes a lot of prayer and time. Our prayer warriors have become a significant importance within the church.
When this pastor heard the call into ministry, there were doubts about being a leader. God placed upon this pastor heart the spirit to be the best servant for God and everything else will work out. As this pastor labored for an idea for a dissertation once again God placed a desire to be the best servant you can be, so this pastor decided to Write on servant leadership.

▼ The context for this project is Mt. Olive Baptist Church located in the suburb of Stockbridge, Georgia. It is a predominately African American, mid-sized (seven hundred plus members) historic church, established in 1870 and boasting over 144 years of history.
The researcher is concerned that Mt. Olive appears to be a church that is preoccupied With financial fears that are preventing it from engaging in Outreach ministry. Furthermore, the researcher contends that by reshaping the attitudes of the members and leadership in Mt. Olive about entrepreneurial ministry, the church will become more willing to use its resources for ministries of outreach.
In this project, the researcher seeks to develop an entrepreneurial ministry model for African American churches. This model can assist African American pastors and congregations in overcoming financial fears preventing African American congregations from engaging in substantial outreach ministries.
Finally, the research process will utilize interviews, surveys and questionnaires to evaluate the effectiveness and test the hypothesis to determine whether the conjecture is true or false.

▼ The purpose of this project was to address the lack of Christian Education for less literate seniors at the Mount Ephraim Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. The objective was to empower seniors to have a greater sense of self-worth by highlighting their abilities and acknowledging the insight that seniors bring to the conversation within the Christian community.
The project took place at the Mount Ephraim Baptist Church. Less literate seniors in the congregation were invited to be involved in a Christian Education class that was designed to help seniors envision their goals, identify the barriers that precluded them from reaching their goals, and help them hear the voices of other seniors to give them encouragement as future leaders, despite their lack of formal schooling. The methodology is ethnographic and narrative approach.
Working with thirty senior citizens at the church, this project addressed the importance of teaching Christian Education to senior citizens who are less literate and have a desire to know more about the Word of God in a way that will help them know that they are really a part of the faith community. Story-linking and ethnographic methods will be employed. The thirty seniors that the author worked with, 75% of them have a fifth grade education; 10% made it to the 7th or 8th grade; and 15% were unable to attend School every day regularly following the death of a parent and consequently they had to quit school to enter the work force to help support the family.
The project included the development of a five-lesson series that addressed how biblical narrative relates to their narrative. The effectiveness of the lesson plan series was evaluated based on increased unity, behavioral attitudes toward each other, and their willingness to share their own stories.

▼ This thesis attempts to examine and clarify the ideas of conscience and guilt through an
examination of the texts of Nietzsche, Freud and Kafka, and to arrive at some conclusions about
the truth of the views of Freud and Nietzsche regarding guilt and conscience. I attempt to show
that there are significant overlaps in the ways in which Nietzsche (in the second essay of On the
Genealogy of Morals), Freud and Kafka (in certain texts) understand the problem of the
conscience, and I argue that Freud’s and Nietzsche’s attempts to answer the question of the nature
and origin of guilt do not succeed. For both of them, guilt – in the form of the bad conscience in
Nietzsche, or in the form of the ego’s experience of the superego in Freud – arises from the
redirection of aggressive instincts or instincts of cruelty away from the normal targets – others –
and towards oneself, and I try to demonstrate that this view is beset by serious problems. Although
I discuss the specific problems with each of their views in detail, the most important general reason
why their views of guilt miss the mark is, I argue, that neither adequately distinguishes between
guilt and the conscience (including the bad conscience), and so they run together phenomena that
in fact call for different explanations. Nietzsche errs in understanding guilt on the basis of debt,
and Freud in his theory of the superego does not take sufficient cognizance of an insight into the
nature of guilt that he himself provides in Civilization and its Discontents (namely that guilt
expresses itself as a need for punishment). Both, however, misunderstand guilt in understanding it
as fear, and Nietzsche’s interpretation of Christianity in line with this conception of guilt fails to
adequately capture the character of Christianity, and its psychological power.
