▼ In recent years, the drastically enhanced architecture and capacity of Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) devices have led to the rapid growth of customized hardware acceleration for modern applications, such as machine learning, cryptocurrency mining, and high-frequency trading. However, this growing capability raises ever more challenges to FPGA placement engines. A modern FPGA device consists of heterogeneous logic resources that are unevenly distributed across the layout. This heterogeneity and nonuniformity bring difficulties to achieve smooth and high-quality placement convergences. Furthermore, FPGA devices contain complex clocking architectures to deliver flexible clock networks. The physical structure of these clock networks, however, are pre-manufactured, unadjustable, and of only limited routing resources. Conventional placement approaches without clock feasibility consideration, hence, can easily lead to clock routing failures and fail the entire FPGA implementation flow. Lastly, given the special standing of FPGAs in fast prototyping and frequent reprogramming, its implementation time is becoming a crucial determining factor to get customers’ favor. Therefore, as a runtime bottleneck of the FPGA implementation flow, ultra-fast and efficient placement engines are also in great demand. This dissertation provides a set of placement algorithms and methodologies for large-scale heterogeneous FPGAs. To essentially improve the quality of FPGA implementation, we propose three core analytical placement engines with distinct methodologies: (1) UTPlaceF, a quadratic placer with physical-aware packing; (2) UTPlaceF-DL, a quadratic placer with simultaneous packing and legalization; (3) elfPlace, an electrostatic-based nonlinear placer. To honor the clock feasibility, we propose an efficient clock-aware placement algorithm, UTPlaceF 2.0, as well as its generalized version, UTPlaceF 2.X, which produces feasible clock routing solutions together with high-quality placement. To reduce the turn-around time of FPGA implementation, we propose an ultra-fast placement engine, UTPlaceF 3.0, which exploits the parallelism on multi-core systems. The effectiveness and efficiency of proposed approaches are demonstrated with extensive experiments on industrial-strength benchmarks. Advisors/Committee Members: Pan, David Z. ▼ Unconventional reservoir such as tight and shale gas reservoirs has the potential of becoming the main source of cleaner energy in the 21th century. Production from these reservoirs is mainly accomplished through engineered hydraulic fracturing to generate fracture networks that provide the gas flow pathways from the rock matrix to the production wells. While hydraulic fracturing technology has progressed considerably in the last thirty years, designing the fracturing system primarily involves judgments from a team of engineers, geoscientists and geophysicists, without taking advantage of computational tools, such as numerical optimization techniques to improve short-term and long-term reservoir production. This thesis focuses on developing novel optimization algorithms that can be used to improve the design and implementation of hydraulic fracturing in a shale gas reservoir to increase production and the net present value of unconventional assets. In particular, we consider simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) and Covariance Matrix Adaptation - Evolution Strategy (CMA-ES) algorithms, which are proven very efficient in finding nearly optimal solutions. We show that with a judicious choice of control variables (continuous or discrete) we can obtain efficient algorithms for performing hydraulic fracture optimization in unconventional reservoirs. To achieve this, the hydraulic fracture production optimization problem is divided into two aspects: fracture stages placement optimization with fix stage numbers and unknown stage numbers. After check the parameters of fracture model that could be used to simulate future reservoir behavior with a higher degree of confidence, the fracture stages optimization is scheduling the fracturing sequence, and adjusting the fracture stages intensity at different locations, which is similar to well placement problem. In addition to the detailed investigation of the new optimization technique, uncertainty quantification of reservoir properties and its implications on the optimization workflow is also considered in the shale gas reservoir model. Taking into account that shale gas reservoirs are highly heterogeneous systems, stochastic optimization methods are the most suitable framework for hydraulic fracture stages placement. Implant position is a key determinant of esthetic and functional success. Achieving the goal of ideal implant position may be affected by case selection, prosthodontically driven treatment planning, site preparation, surgeon’s experience and use of a surgical guide. The combined effect of surgical guide design, surgeon’s experience, and size of the edentulous area on the accuracy of implant placement was evaluated in a simulated clinical setting. Twenty-one volunteer surgeons were recruited to participate in this study. They were divided equally into 3 groups (Novice, Intermediate, and Experienced). Each surgeon placed implants in single- and double-sites using 4 different surgical guide designs (No guide, Tube, Channel, and Guided) utilizing written instructions describing the ideal implant positions. A definitive typodont was constructed that had 3 implants in prosthetically determined ideal positions of single- and double-sites. The position and angulation of implants placed by the surgeons in the duplicate typodonts were measured using a computerized coordinate measuring machine and compared to the definitive typodont. The mean absolute positional error for all guides was 0.273, 0.340, Implant position is a key determinant of esthetic and functional success. This quantitative study examined the impact that Advanced Placement (AP) coursework had on students attending college with specific emphasis on those who failed the exam. The study comprised four years of entering freshmen students between the academic years 2006-2009. The study was comprehensive in that it revealed all AP attempts regardless of score and student's desire to submit results to Temple University and the universities' acceptance of the same for college credit. For consistency, college success was determined based on data in the first two academic years of study. Students' grade point average (GPA) and retention were analyzed as the two primary assessments defining college access. The sample consisted of 16,731 students over four years of entering first-time freshmen to Temple University. The results indicated that AP score had a significant effect on both GPA and retention, although the effects for GPA were much stronger than for retention. Essentially, the results showed that the GPA of students decreases linearly from those who obtained an average AP score of "5", through "4", "3" and "2". Students whose average AP score was "1", however, performed at a lower level than students who had taken no AP course at all. Moreover, when various pre-college factors (specifically, SAT scores, high school GPA, mothers' and fathers' educational level and family income) were used as covariates, the effect for AP performance was markedly reduced. As such, it became evident that the real issue in evaluating the impact of AP performance is not whether students who take and pass AP courses do better in college. The real issue is whether AP performance provides an advantage over and above the advantages that students already possess. This study also revealed a threshold at which AP exposure correlated to college success when studying the AP failures with a score of `1'. The study findings contribute to emerging literature examining the relationship that AP failures have on students and colleges.

▼ Horizontal well placement determination within a reservoir is a significant and difficult step in the reservoir development process. Determining the optimal well location is a complex problem involving many factors including geological considerations, reservoir and fluid properties, economic costs, lateral direction, and technical ability. The most thorough approach to this problem is that of an exhaustive search, in which a simulation is run for every conceivable well position in the reservoir. Although thorough and accurate, this approach is typically not used in real world applications due to the time constraints from the excessive number of simulations. This project suggests the use of a genetic algorithm applied to the horizontal well placement problem in a gas reservoir to reduce the required number of simulations. This research aims to first determine if well placement optimization is even necessary in a gas reservoir, and if so, to determine the benefit of optimization. Performance of the genetic algorithm was analyzed through five different case scenarios, one involving a vertical well and four involving horizontal wells. The genetic algorithm approach is used to evaluate the effect of well placement in heterogeneous and anisotropic reservoirs on reservoir recovery. The wells are constrained by surface gas rate and bottom-hole pressure for each case. This project's main new contribution is its application of using genetic algorithms to study the effect of well placement optimization in gas reservoirs. Two fundamental questions have been answered in this research. First, does well placement in a gas reservoir affect the reservoir performance? If so, what is an efficient method to find the optimal well location based on reservoir performance? The research provides evidence that well placement optimization is an important criterion during the reservoir development phase of a horizontal-well project in gas reservoirs, but it is less significant to vertical wells in a homogeneous reservoir. It is also shown that genetic algorithms are an extremely efficient and robust tool to find the optimal location. ▼ This thesis provides a syntactic explanation of the object placement issue of three buyu-structures, i.e. resultative buyu-structure, degree buyu-structures and potential buyu-strucutres, by re-examining their syntactic structures respectively. As a result, the reason why no object is allowed in the degree buyu-structure is ascribed to another projection occupying the complement position of V, which never moves up. On the contrary, without the extra projection, resultative and potential structures display a simpler sentence formation: [NP+VP+NP], where the second NP looks like the object of a sentence. However, contraints on the syllable numbers of the resultative buyu dues to the existence of vP in transitive resultative buyu-structures, and v0 cannot take a huge chunk, which reflects the crucial property of the so-called ‘light verb’ – – LIGHT. Apart from solving this object placement issue, the current study also applies Xuan’s (2008, 2011) TelicP Hypothesis to the analysis of both degree constructions and potential forms, revising Sybesma’s (1999) Small Clause analysis in several aspects. A relative unified skeleton of these three buyu-structures is built: [vP [v’ v [AspP [Asp’ Asp [Mod2P [Mod2’ Mod2 [TelP [Tel’ Tel [VP [V’ V (…) ]]]]]]]]]] The derivations of these three categories of buyu-structures also share some common processes. First, the main verb moves up to Tel0 to check its telic feature and incorporates with buyu; then the combination of [V+buyu] moves up to inner Asp0 or Mod0. For resultative buyu-structures, there is no inner ModP, thus the movements within vP are V-to-Tel0 movement and then Tel0-to-Asp0 movement. If the structure is transitive, one more operation is applied: an Asp0-to-v movement or an insertion of ba. For degree buyu-structures, a DegP occupies the complement position of the main verb to predicate on the main verb, denoting the degree property of a verbal event. The Tel0 is filled with de and the main verb moves up and incorporates with de. In transitive structures, the combination of [V-de] further moves up to v. For potential buyu-structure, de occupies Mod20, and no inner AspP is involved. Similarly, the main verb moves up and incorporates with buyu first, and then their combination moves up to Mod20 and incorporates with potential de. OpenFlow est un nouveau protocole qui réalise le concept SDN. Pour traiter ces flux, OpenFlow utilise des listes de règles sur les commutateurs. Ces règles sont utilisées pour déterminer les actions dans le réseau. Ceci permet de simplifier la mise en place de services réseaux complexes mais soulève la question de savoir quelles règles définir et où les placer dans le réseau afin d’en respecter ses contraintes. Dans cette thèse, nous nous concentrons sur le problème de placement de règles dans OpenFlow (ORPP) et proposons une abstraction de type boite noire afin de masquer la gestion du réseau. Tout d'abord, nous formalisons le problème de placement de règles et faisons une étude des solutions existantes. Les solutions existantes sont cependant inefficaces car elles reposent majoritairement sur le concept du plus court chemin. Nous proposons de relaxer le problème en autorisant l’utilisation de chemins arbitraires et proposons deux algorithmes complémentaires : OFFICER et aOFFICER. L'idée générale d’OFFICER et aOFFICER est d’utiliser les chemins les plus efficaces pour le trafic de haute importance et autoriser le trafic de plus basse importance à suivre des détours. Ces deux propositions sont évaluées en utilisant des traces de trafic. Finalement, nous appliquons le principe de la boite noire pour améliorer les performances d'un service de diffusion de contenus dans les réseaux cellulaires

The massive number of connected devices combined with an increasing traffic push network operators to their limit by limiting their profitability. To tackle this problem, Software-Defined Networking (SDN), which decouples network control logic from forwarding devices, has been proposed. An important part of the SDN concepts is implemented by the OpenFlow protocol that abstracts network communications as flows and processes them using a prioritized list of rules on the network forwarding elements. While the abstraction offered by OpenFlow allows to implement many applications, it raises the new problem of how to define the rules and where to place them in the network while respecting all requirements, which we refer as the OpenFlow Rules Placement Problem (ORPP). In this thesis, we focus on the ORPP and hide the complexity of network management by proposing a black box abstraction. First, we formalize that problem, classify and discuss existing solutions. We discover that most of the solutions enforce the routing policy when placing rules, which is not memory efficient in some cases. Second, by trading routing for better resource efficiency, we propose OFFICER and aOFFICER, two frameworks that select OpenFlow rules satisfying policies and network constraints, while minimizing overheads. ▼ Recently, consumers have witnessed a dramatic increase in the number of product placements that occur across all forms of media. Despite this enthusiastic use of product placements, researchers have not determined whether or not this form of advertising produces profitable outcomes for featured brands. In the framework presented here, I have sought to outline how basic cognitive processes may be used to account for some of the divergent consequences that occur for product placements. Unlike other frameworks that treat memory as a separate outcome of product placements, I conceptualize memory as nonanalytically influencing other more critical outcomes such as brand evaluation and selection. The nonanalytic influence of memory is hypothesized as occurring via an attribution that is made about the ease experienced when processing a brand that has been previously encountered. To examine whether this nonanalytic framework, or an alternative framework that rests on more deliberate, analytic processing, can be used to account for the various consequences that arise after a product placement, four studies were conducted. In each of these studies, participants were presented with a narrative containing a number of brand presentations. Later, participants completed tasks that assessed memory and brand preferences across the various studies. In the first two studies, the impact of the presentation of a brand within a narrative was examined. These studies revealed that a nonanalytic influence of memory was observed, but only when there was a match in modalities across the product placement event and the manner in which more critical outcomes are obtained. Thus, fluency-based perceptual processing was found to nonanalytically influenced participants’ brand preferences. Extending these findings, Experiments 3 and 4 examined whether this nonanalytic influence of memory would still exert its effect on brand preferences when deliberate influences, which were guided by immersion and persuasion knowledge, were manipulated. Rather than brand preferences being guided by a deliberate and analytic assessment of the brand, brand ratings were guided by nonanalytic memory influences. However, this influence only emerged when fluent processing of the brand was not attributed to the prior presentation of the brand during the narrative. ▼ Primary family caregivers face one of the most major and difficult decisions in the trajectory of caregiving when they are unable to maintain care at home and have to consider nursing home placement. Many researchers have described the catalyst for this decision and transition as a “crisis event,” occurring after an unplanned medical event by the older adult that requires immediate attention or a breakdown in the primary caregiver’s ability to manage the relentless demands of care. While previous researchers have demonstrated the importance of caregivers in nursing home placement, few researchers have sought to understand the impact of the decision on the family and address the family context surrounding nursing home placement over time. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study, guided by the Family Management Style Framework (FMSF), was to understand how caregivers define the situation surrounding care and placement, manage the care and placement, and perceive the consequences of care and placement on the family at initial placement (within the first 30 to 45 days) and 3 months post-placement. Ten primary family caregivers, whose older family member recently entered a nursing home, were recruited from four nursing homes in the Midwest. The caregivers were interviewed within 30 to 45 days of initial placement of the older family member and then again 3 months post-placement. There were a variety of caregiving dyads in the sample. Digitally recorded interviews were transcribed verbatim, processed, and coded using the FMSF dimensions and components. Results of this study were used to understand the viewpoints and needs of the caregiver during the nursing home transition. Overall, there were similarities across caregivers, especially among spousal and non-spousal dyads. All caregivers identified themselves as responsible for care management and placement and acknowledged the importance of remaining involved post-placement. They also noted the significance of ensuring the nursing home staff and older family member recognize that the caregiver continues to be involved in management and available to provide ongoing support. Ultimately, this research will contribute to the development of recommendations about nursing home placement decisions and tailored family-centered programs and interventions to assist in the adjustment for caregivers, older adults, and their families. ▼ Evidence suggests that nursing students’ diverse cultures and backgrounds may have a less positive experience than mainstream students during their clinical placement and leave their nursing courses at higher rates, but whether their clinical experiences play a role is unclear. Further, little is known about which socio-demographic characteristics or attributes if any, may lead to nursing students feeling different to their peers during their clinical placements and how this may affect the quality of their clinical experiences. There is therefore a need to better understand these effects not only from the student’s perspective but from the perspective of the staff who supervise them, in order to ensure students obtain maximal benefit from their placements. This study, ‘Exploring Diversity Among Nursing students (EDAN) on clinical placement’, used a mixed methods approach involving an anonymous web-based survey. A broad-based definition of diversity described by Loden and Rosener (1991) was modified and used to include age, gender, ethnicity (including language and religious belief), sexual orientation, educational background, income, marital status, parental status, work experience and disability. First, second and third year students undertaking any Bachelor of Nursing course (N=704) and university staff involved in the clinical learning environment (N = 165) were recruited from seven Australian universities. Both quantitative and qualitative data indicated that diversity attributes affect students’ experience on clinical placement. When comparing the sociodemographic characteristics of those who felt different with those who did not, students who were older, male, International, had previous nursing experience, had lesser English language skills, a previous degree, non - Australian born and not in paid employment were more likely to report feeling different (p <0.001 for all characteristics except not in paid employment p <0.05). Analysis of the open-ended comments refined three themes under the construct of diversity, Difference, Difficulties and Discrimination. Subthemes within the theme of Difference were “being and feeling” and “experience, exposure and expectation”. Within the theme of Difficulty were the subthemes “not prepared for diversity” encountered during the placements, “speaking up” about the challenges, and “surviving financially”, the financial impact of a reduction or absence of part-time employment. The subthemes within Discrimination were “prejudices do prevail”, “send them home” and “walked away”. The finding that students and workforce staff for whom English is a second language affected the clinical and learning experiences of students who spoke English as a first language has not been previously reported. ▼ Traditionally, a geographical area can be monitored via land based communication systems or spaceborne remote systems for disaster prevention. However both methods have their respective limitations in terms of resolution, accuracy and real time observation. A new suborbital constellation concept offers an independent unit device which will be attached to an aircraft and use commercial flights as means of monitoring forest fires or forecasting solar energy. The shape of the fuselage can be used to redirect the creeping wave generated from the antenna away from the aircraft’s surface, towards the satellites for communication purposes. This research aims to determine an optimum antenna placement on the electrically large body in order to satisfy efficient communication with ground and satellites from the same location on the aircraft. The quarter wavelength monopole operating at 1.575 GHz in L1 band for the GPS communication and a patch antenna with dielectric constant of 2.2 for the substrate operating at 800 MHz for the GSM communication are selected. Various algorithms and approaches are investigated to perform comparison of accuracy for results and computational resources between different simulation techniques namely Multi-Level Fast Multipole Method (MLFMM), Physical Optics (PO) and Uniform Theory of Diffraction (UTD) using a modern computational electromagnetic numerical platform FEKO. The simulation results show that the optimum antenna location on a Boeing 737 is found to be at the bottom of the aircraft in the conical section of the tail 30.95 m away from the tip of the nose in the longitudinal direction. In addition to that, this work provides a unique perspective to system engineering for using aircraft as a land monitoring station. ▼ The provision of special education services to students with disabilities has grown dramatically since the passage of Public Law 94-142, the first federal legislation guaranteeing this right to publicly educated children. This legislation ensured that students with disabilities adversely affecting their ability to access the general education curriculum must be provided services within the least restrictive environment of a school setting. For some students with more significant disabilities, the least restrictive environment can mean placement in a self-contained setting or even a separate school. The costs associated with self-contained settings can be high, and school districts rely on federal and state reimbursements to offset expenses. The structure of these special education reimbursements varies dramatically across the United States. In Illinois, school districts rely on a combination of revenue from federal, state, and local governments to address costs associated with educating students with disabilities. For students with severe disabilities, Illinois currently provides a greater reimbursement to school districts for students placed at private school placements rather than public settings, creating a potential incentive to access a more restrictive placement for these individuals. This study sought to examine whether this incentive occurs in practice and how it may influence decision making by special education administrators. A sequential mixed methods design was selected to collect data in two phases. Five research questions were developed to address this topic: (a) How does each Illinois school district’s placement rate of students into separate special education settings compare to the state average placement rate? (b) Are any of five demographic variables (operational expenditure per pupil, district size, percent of students in special education, percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, percentage of non-White students) characteristic of school districts that place students above the statewide average rate into separate settings? (c) What factors guide special education administrators in their decision-making practices regarding the placement of students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment? (d) To what degree does a special education director's understanding of Illinois special education funding models influence placement of students into separate settings? and (e) To what extent do the placement decision-making practices of special education directors reflect children’s best interests? The study used a conceptual framework based on the Best Interests of the Student model (Shapiro & Stefkovich, 2011). In the first quantitative phase, placement and demographic data from 859 school districts were used to analyze both the number of students placed into separate facilities and the characteristics of districts with significantly more students placed than the state average.
