▼ Depuis les années soixante du siècle dernier, les scientifiques linguistes ne parviennent pas à se mettre d’accord sur la meilleure façon d’apprendre une deuxième langue. Certains considèrent que c’est à l’aide des méthodes implicites qu’une deuxième langue s’apprend le mieux, d’autres sont convaincus que la connaissance de la structure d’une langue est déterminante. Au milieu de ces débats, une nouvelle méthode d’apprentissage du français, la méthode AIM (Accelerated Integrated Method), a été introduite aux Pays-Bas en 2007. L’approche de cette formule d’apprentissage est basée sur les méthodes implicites, où les cours se déroulent en communiquant dans la langue cible. Les règles de grammaire et de structure ne sont pas traitées pendant les cours d’AIM, mais c’est la communication en français qui joue un rôle primordial. Étant donné que cette dernière n’est pas considérée comme étant aussi importante dans les méthodes explicites, la question de recherche suivante a été élaborée : la méthode d’apprentissage a-t-elle une influence sur l’authenticité de la compréhension et de la production orales pendant une conversation en français ? D’après nos résultats, il s’avère que la méthode implicite mène à une compréhension plus authentique. Cependant, la réponse concernant l’authenticité de la production n’est pas aussi tranchée, une distinction claire entre les méthodes d’apprentissage n’ayant pas été prouvée. Ensuite, nous avons considéré la motivation des apprenants et nous nous sommes posé la question suivante : quel est le rôle de la motivation sur l’authenticité de la compréhension et sur l’authenticité de la production orales du français ? D’après nos résultats, les étudiants non motivés de la méthode implicite ont fait le plus de progrès pendant l’année scolaire, ce qui contredit nos hypothèses de départ. ▼ Background: Physical inactivity has been identified as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality. Despite public health guidelines advising children and adolescents to spend a minimum of 60 minutes per day of at least moderate intensity physical activity, a large proportion of children and adolescents fail to meet these guidelines. Interventions promoting physical activity show varying degrees of success, and more detailed evaluations of such interventions are essential. The aim of this research was to conduct an in-depth evaluation of a community-based physical activity program aimed at children and adolescents, specifically the Tribe Project. Methods: The RE-AIM framework (Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation and Maintenance) was used to evaluate the individual and organisational-level impact of the Tribe Project. A single mixed method case study was used based on five sources of evidence: interviews, questionnaires, documentation, archival records and direct observations. Participants included the Tribe managers and coaches implementing the program and the Tribe parents and children/adolescents who attended. Results: The Tribe Project reached approximately 2.5% of the eligible population living within Bath and North East Somerset. The program successfully met some of its objectives although feedback procedures were poor and the program aims were unclear. The community-level adoption of the program was high, however, the implementation and adherence to the program principles at the setting-level varied. The program was successfully institutionalised within the University of Bath yet pathways after the program into the community varied, and were mostly competitive only. Nonetheless, a combination of social, psychological and physical benefits was reported following participation. Conclusion: To assess accurately the potential impact of physical activity interventions a combined assessment of individual and organisational-level factors is necessary. This will help inform policy on effective strategies to promote physical activity in the community, and develop interventions that are more effective as a result.

▼ Työn tavoite on tutkia Discovery Ansys Integrated Multiphysics (Discovery AIM) ohjelman soveltuvuutta virtauslaskennan ja lämmönsiirron ongelmien ratkaisuun ja simulaatiokykyyn. Soveltuvuutta testataan vertaamalla kirjallisuudesta otettuja analyyttisesti ratkaistuja tehtäviä AIM:n numeeriseen ratkaisuun. Lisäksi testataan ohjelman kykyä mallintaa koeympäristö, jossa tietokoneen suoritinta jäähdytetään jäähdytyselementin ja tuulettimen yhdistelmällä. Työ keskittyy AIM:n virtauslaskenta- ja lämmönsiirtopuoleen, jotka hyödyntävät käsitteeksi nousseen Ansys Fluentin numeerisia ratkaisijoita. AIM soveltuu myös mm. lujuuslaskentaan ja sähkömagneettisten ilmiöiden mallintamiseen, mutta näihin ominaisuuksiin ei työssä syvennytä, koska ne eivät ole työn rajauksen ja tarpeen kannalta oleellisia. Työn alussa käydään läpi virtauslaskennan teoriaa, sekä yleisimpiä siihen liittyviä käsitteitä. Tämän jälkeen tutustutaan AIM:n käyttöliittymään, sekä ominaisuuksiin. Tarkoituksena on antaa kuva, kuinka ohjelmisto toimii ja esittäytyy käyttäjälle. Tässä osiossa tutustutaan myös AIM:n rajoitteisiin, jotka rajoittavat sen käytettävyyttä virtauslaskennan ja lämmönsiirtymän osa-alueilla. Teoriaosuuden jälkeen esitellään analyyttiset ongelmat, joita on tarkoitus mallintaa numeerisesti. Ensin esitellään, mikä on ongelman ratkaisu analyyttisesti, ja tämän jälkeen esitetään, kuinka työ pyritään siirtämään AIM-ohjelmaan ja ratkaisemaan numeerisesti. Seuraavaksi esitellään testikokoonpano, sekä käytetty ohjelmisto ja työkalut, joilla testikokoonpanosta otetaan mittauksia simulaation rakentamista varten. Tämän jälkeen esitetään, kuinka testi suoritetaan ja mitä mittauksia tehdään testin aikana, sekä käydään läpi testilaitteiston ominaisuuksia. Lisäksi käydään läpi simulaatiomallin rakentaminen, käytetyt alku- ja reunaehdot. Testikokoonpanona toimi sitä varten rakennettu tietokonekokoonpano, jossa mitattiin lämpötiloja rasituksen yhteydessä prosessorin jäähdytyselementistä. Lopuksi käytiin läpi tulokset ja todettiin, että Ansys (Discovery) AIM ei sovellu hyvin teoreettisten ongelmien mallintamiseen, sillä jo pienessä otannassa havaittiin suurimmillaan yli kuuden prosentin heittoja tulokseen, sekä mallien alustus on vaikeaa ohjelmistolla, jolla ei voida mallintaa kaksiulotteisia virtauksia. Simulaation rakentaminen koeympäristön ja -mittausten perusteella onnistui hyvin ja AIM:ää voi suositella teollisiin ja kokeellisiin mittausympäristöihin, jos virtausgeometrian deformaatiolla tai reaktiivisilla virtauksilla ei ole vaikutusta lopputulokseen.The objective of this thesis work was to study, how Discovery Ansys Integrated Multiphysics (Discovery AIM) fares with solving analytical fluid flow and heat transfer problems numerically and how well is it able to build a simulation according to measurements from a test rig. These problems were chosen to represent some of the most common types from literature. Os remanescentes de quilombos são sociedades multiétnicas com origem relacionada à presença do escravo africano no Brasil. A história demográfica dessas populações tem sido estudada a partir de fontes históricas, demográficas, etnográficas e genéticas. No presente trabalho, buscou-se avaliar a origem e o impacto das imigrações recentes e antigas sobre a constituição genética dos remanescentes de quilombos de Mocambo, Rio das Rãs e Sacutiaba. Para tanto, foram analisados parâmetros demográficos (sexo, estado matrimonial e local de nascimento) e genéticos (freqüências alélicas e genotípicas de 16 marcadores genéticos autossômicos). Os dados genéticos gerados para cada população foram utilizados na comparação entre as suas proporções de nativos e imigrantes, como também na comparação dessas a outras populações descritas na literatura. Foi encontrada participação considerável de imigrantes em todas as comunidades, que em sua maioria eram mulheres, sendo a contração de matrimônio uma das principais causas para esse quadro. Com relação aos dados genéticos, não foram encontradas diferenças significativas entre as parcelas de imigrantes e nativos. Houve predomínio de casamentos endogâmicos, porém isso não foi suficiente para gerar alterações substanciais na estrutura genética das populações. Os resultados indicam a existência de fluxo gênico contínuo para essas populações. Além disso, a contribuição parental africana foi a predominante, sendo que Mocambo apresentou o quadro mais complexo de mistura, tendo a menor participação dessa parental (52,2%). É possível que em algum momento de suas histórias essas populações estivessem isoladas, porém, a barreira ao fluxo gênico nos dias de hoje já está bastante dissolvida. O impacto da imigração foi baixo, o que deve estar relacionado à homogeneização em processo, ocasionada pelo fluxo gênico operante ao longo de grande parte da história dessas populações. Além disso, os dados encontrados corroboram outras fontes históricas, que indicam a participação predominante de africanos e miscigenação com povos de outras origens durante a formação destas comunidades.

The remanescentes de quilombos are multiethnic societies whose origins are related to the presence of African slaves in Brazil. The demographic history of these populations has been studied using historical, demographic, ethnographic and genetic sources. The present work aims to evaluate the origin and the impact of recent and ancient waves of immigration upon the genetic constitution of the remanescentes de quilombos of Mocambo, Rio das Rãs and Sacutiaba. For this purpose, demographic and genetic parameters were analyzed. The demographic parameters are sex, matrimonial status and place of birth, and the genetic parameters are allelic and genotypic frequencies of 16 autosomal genetic markers. Abstract The importance of good construction planning affects the final costs of the production and the timing of the project. Planning for building projects has been studied with the aim of identifying how three week planning appears in the construction industry today. A case study has been conducted in Navisworks Simulate to assess whether the software is suitable to connect the task schedule with the BIM model to create a 4D model. 4D models are used for performing 4D construction simulation to visualize the project. In order to use the benefits of the model, investment in equipment and software is required. This means higher costs for the companies. Therefore inexpensive software is needed so that it will be profitable to use 4D models even in the production of small projects. The survey which aims to identify planning in the construction industry shows that planning varies between the different sectors, but also that planning technique depends on the knowledge of those who actually carry out the planning. The conclusion is that education in planning techniques and computer aided planning tools is needed to implement BIM in the planning process. With a detailed schedule and a BIM model which is adjusted to the construction of the building, Navisworks Simulate is a suitable program to use in the creation of Building Information Models. When using Navisworks Simulate to create a 4D model, the natural choice would be Navisworks Freedom software for visualization of the project in the production. This is because the Navisworks creates its own file format, which can only be opened in software created by Autodesk. This study was aimed to improve three week planning and increase the use of assimilating feedback by using BIM in the construction industry. The conclusion is that the choice of software for the creation of a 4D model affects the application that later can be used for visualization.

Sammanfattning Vikten av god produktionsplanering ligger till grund för dels den ekonomiska produktionskostnaden, dels tidsaspekten i projektet. Som bakgrund till rapporten har planering i byggproduktionen studerats med syftet att kartlägga hur treveckorsplaneringen ser ut inom bygg- och anläggningsbranschen i dagsläget. En fallstudie har genomförts i Navisworks Simulate för att undersöka om programvaran lämpar sig att sammankoppla treveckorsplanering med BIM-modell för att skapa en 4D-modell. 4D-modellen används för att på ett tydligt vis visualisera arbetet i projektet. För att utnyttja modellen krävs investeringar i utrustning och programvaror vilket innebär dyra kostnader för företagen. För visualisering av projektet eftersträvas därför en programvara till låg kostnad så att det ska bli lönsamt att använda 4D-modellen i produktionen även på mindre projekt. ▼ Lasten ja nuorten fyysinen aktiivisuus on terveen kasvun ja kehityksen perusta, ja kouluympäristö on ratkaisevassa roolissa oppilaiden liikunnan ilon ja innon ylläpitämisessä. Terve koululainen (TEKO) -hankkeessa on vuosien 2010–2018 aikana edistetty ala- ja yläkouluikäisten liikkumisen turvallisuutta ja sittemmin myös liikuntaa koulussa ja vapaa-ajalla tarjoamalla liikettä lisääviä ja tukevia materiaaleja ensisijaisesti yläkoulun liikunnan ja terveystiedon opettajille. Pro gradu -tutkielmani tarkoituksena oli arvioida TEKO-hankkeen onnistumista. Hankkeen arviointi suoritettiin terveyden edistämisen interventioiden arvioinneissa usein käytetyn RE-AIM-arviointimallin ja sen sisältämien ulottuvuuksien – tunnettuus, vaikuttavuus, vastaan- ja käyttöönotto ja pysyvyys – avulla. Tutkimusaineistona hyödynnettiin liikunnan ja terveystiedon opettajilta kolmena vuonna (2013, 2015, 2018) kerättyjä arviointikyselyvastauksia (n = 467). Kyselyt oli toimitettu vastaajille heitä edustavan järjestön, LIITO ry:n, sähköpostilistan kautta. Vastasin itse vuoden 2018 arviointikyselyn laatimisesta ja toteuttamisesta. Tutkimuksessani keskityttiin selvittämään, onko TEKO-hankkeen tunnettuudessa ja vaikuttavuudessa sekä hankkeen materiaalien vastaan- ja käyttöönotossa ja pysyvyydessä eroja eri vastaajaryhmien kesken. Hypoteesina oli, että sukupuolella, luokka-asteella ja vastausvuodella on yhteys TEKO-hankkeen onnistumiseen ja sen eri osa-alueisiin. Tutkimusaineisto käsiteltiin SPSS 25 -tilasto-ohjelmalla, ja tutkimusmenetelminä toimivat tilastolliset testit (khiin neliön testi, Mann-Whitneyn U-testi, Kruskal-Wallisin testi, logistinen regressioanalyysi ja kaksisuuntainen varianssianalyysi). Tutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat, että Terve koululainen -hankkeen tunnettuus on lisääntynyt tilastollisesti erittäin merkitsevästi vuosien 2013–2018 aikana sekä kaikkien kyselyvastaajien että yläkoulussa opettavien keskuudessa. Lisäksi sukupuolella on yhteys TEKO-hankkeen tunnettuuteen ja vaikuttavuuteen. Hankkeen materiaalien vastaan- ja käyttöönotto ei ole yhteydessä sukupuoleen ja luokka-asteeseen, mutta pysyvyys on tilastollisesti merkitsevää etenkin yläkoulussa opettavien vastaajien keskuudessa. Tulosten mukaan naiset tunnistavat TEKO-hankkeen miehiä paremmin; lisäksi heidän tietonsa on lisääntynyt miehiä enemmän. Miespuolisten opettajien tavoittamiseen tulisikin vastaavanlaisissa hankkeissa kiinnittää erityistä huomiota. Vaikuttavuuden osa-alueen muut tulokset – yhteistyön lisääntyminen, käytettyjen sisältöjen laajeneminen ja hyödynnettyjen menetelmien monipuolistuminen – perustuvat puolestaan hankkeen painopisteen muutokseen. ▼ The Cloud Imaging and Particle Size (CIPS) instrument on the Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere satellite images in the nadir at the UV wavelength of 265 nm. The camera array has an approximately 120Â° along track (2000 km) by 80Â° cross track (1000 km) field of view at a horizontal resolution of 1 by 2 km in the nadir. The satellite is in a sun synchronous orbit with an approximately noon local time equator crossing. The observed albedo is due to Rayleigh scattered sun light from an altitude of approximately 50 km and sunlight scattered from Polar Mesospheric Clouds (PMC) which occur in the summer mesosphere at 83 km. The goal of the CIPS instrument is to retrieve high horizontal resolution maps of PMC albedo and the mode radius of the particle size distribution. The first manuscript analyzes the uncertainties involved in the retrieval. The ability to infer mode radius from the PMC signal is made significantly harder by the presence of the Rayleigh signal. Much of the difference between PMC signals of different mode radii is also consistent with possible changes in the Rayleigh signal. The signal is decomposed into components which isolate the portion of the PMC signalâ s dependence on radius which is not consistent with changes in the Rayleigh signal. This isolated component is compared with the measurement noise to estimate and understand the uncertainties in the CIPS retrieval. The presence of the Rayleigh signal is a difficulty in the PMC retrieval, but it is also a valuable data product. The second manuscript highlights the initial findings of a new gravity wave data set developed by the author. The data set provides relative ozone variations at the stratopause with a horizontal resolution of 20 by 20 km. An abundance of gravity wave signatures can be seen in the data which appear to emanate from weather events like thunderstorms and hurricanes as well as orographic sources such as the Andes and the Antarctic Peninsula. The data set fills a gap that presently exists in our observational coverage of gravity waves, so the data set should help significantly in constraining Global Climate Models. ▼ BACKGROUND: Understanding the reach and representativeness of participants enrolled in behavioral trials, including nutrition and physical activity trials, helps inform the generalizability of study findings and potential public health impacts. Exploring the reach and representativeness of trials that target low socioeconomic and low health literate participants in rural and medically underserved areas, such as southwest Virginia (SWVA), is especially important. The proposed research is part of Talking Health, a six-month, pragmatic randomized-control trial aimed at decreasing sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption (SIPsmartER) as compared to matched contact control targeting improving physical activity (MoveMore). This community-based trial targets an 8-county region in SWVA. OBJECTIVES: Guided by the reach dimension of the RE-AIM framework, the primary objectives of this study were to determine if eligible and enrolled participants in the Talking Health trial were representative of: 1) eligible, but declined participants, and 2) the broader targeted 8-county region based on 2010 US county level census data. We hypothesized that eligible and enrolled participants would be represented in terms of age, race, ethnicity, educational attainment, income, and health literacy when compared to eligible and declined participants, as well as to the broader US census data. We also hypothesized that males would be underrepresented. METHODS: Eligibility requirements for the study included being 18 years of age or older, having reliable access to a telephone, drinking 200 kilocalories of SSB per day, and being a resident of SWVA. A variety of recruitment strategies were used such as active recruitment at health departments, free clinics, and local businesses with help from Virginia Cooperative Extension agents along with passive methods such as flyers, newspaper ads, and word of mouth. The eligibility screener included basic demographic information such as gender, age, race, marital status, occupation, income, educational attainment, number of children in household, and insurance provider. The screener also had three validated subjective health literacy questions. Statistical analysis included descriptive statistics, independent sample t-tests, Chi-square tests, and One Way ANOVA tests to examine the representativeness of enrolled participants. RESULTS: In total, 1,056 participants were screened, 620 were eligible (58.7%), and 301 (48.5%) enrolled. On average, demographic data for enrolled participants included: 93% Caucasian; 81.4% female; income of 23,173±17,144; 32% high school (HS) education; and health literacy score 4.5±2.2(3=High, 15=Low). Among eligible participants, when comparing enrolled vs. declined participants there were significant differences (p<0.05) in educational attainment [enrolled=32% HS, declined=48% HS], health literacy scores [enrolled=4.5(2.2), declined=5.0(3.1)], gender [enrolled=81% female, declined=73% female], age [enrolled=41.8(13.4) years, declined=38.3(13.6) years], and race… Advisors/Committee Members: Zoellner, Jamie M. ▼ Children and adolescents consume sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) excessively, which is associated with childhood obesity, dental caries, and increased risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Interventions spanning the socio-ecological model (i.e., intrapersonal, interpersonal, environmental, policy) have been shown to reduce SSB consumption under controlled conditions. However, not much is known about their potential to work under "real-world" conditions. This information can ensure that effective programs reach populations that could most benefit, such as children and adolescents in Central Appalachia, who consume three to four times more SSBs than their American peers. Central Appalachia is a rural, geographically isolated region where attempts to reduce SSBs are challenged by limited resources, skepticism toward health programs/providers, and pervasive cultural norms around SSBs. This dissertation describes three studies (2014-2016) that address these challenges by testing multi-level interventions that prioritize cultural acceptability and feasibility. The first study was a systematic review of child and adolescent SSB studies using the RE-AIM (reach, efficacy/effectiveness, adoption, implementation, maintenance) framework to evaluate whether studies reported elements necessary for replicability, such as resources needed for delivery or factors that might prevent participation. The review revealed that available evidence does not provide this information, and recommended that future studies prioritize evaluating and reporting these elements. The second and third studies describe methods to test implementation of Kids SIPsmartER, a theory-based program targeting various socio-ecological levels, in an Appalachian Virginia county. The second study engaged a group on local middle school youth (n=9) in adapting the program, which targeted universal theoretical constructs, to ensure that it was culturally acceptable and demonstrated potential to generate community-wide changes. The third study used a randomized controlled design to determine whether Kids SIPsmartER was feasible as a school-based program. This study tested the program's potential reduce SSBs, as well as whether it was accepted, in demand, and able to be practically implemented within schools, the most common gathering place for rural adolescents. Taken together, these studies provide the foundation for larger, more controlled studies that prioritize both efficacy and replicability, in order to reduce the disproportionate burden of SSBs and associated diseases across Central Appalachia. ▼ Research Topic Human imagination, an ethical aim and action are the progenitors for reconciliation between humans and their environment. Two examples of such reconciliation are found in Brazil and are the result of the tireless work of an American Nun, Sister Dorothy Stang and the staff of the Iracambi Atlantic Rainforest Research and Conservation Center. The present inquiry portrays the history, current programs, and the potential for the findings to shape the lives of those committed to work toward creating a balance between human endeavors and sustainable environments. Theory and Protocol This research is grounded in critical hermeneutics and follows an interpretive approach to field research and data analysis (Herda 1999). This orientation places the researcher and participants in a collaborative relationship that exemplifies the power of conversation and the importance of language to unveil new understandings about our world. Research Categories Three primary critical hermeneutic concepts, drawn from the theory of Paul Ricoeur (1992), provided the categories for this research. These categories served as the boundaries for both data collection and analysis: Ethical Aim, understood from a critical hermeneutic orientation, promotes living with and for others in a socially just manner; Imagination is the creative act of envisioning a different future that can be inhabited; and Praxis fosters the practical application of ethical aim and imagination through action. Findings The participants, who lived their ethics daily in the practical application of sustainable practices, argued that we must collectively re-imagine what it means to be interconnected with the earth, because the current one-sided relationship between humans and their environment is unsustainable. The following findings were derived from the conversations with participants: (1) sustainable praxis is the responsibility of everyone; (2) education can lead to sustainability in real world contexts; (3) an ethical aim includes esteem for people and the earth’s resources. ▼ Scientific evidence does not automatically translate to real-world behavior change. For example, despite considerable research about the health benefits of physical activity, only one in four American adults meets the national physical activity recommendations. To bridge the research-practice gap, Dissemination and Implementation (DandI) Science has emerged as the study of how scientific findings are integrated in typical settings such as schools and communities. Recent research illustrates multiple barriers to DandI Science and a need for methods that capture hard-to-measure, chaotic implementation processes and outcomes. Therefore, the overarching goal of this dissertation was to explore novel approaches to DandI Science and bridging the research-practice gap. This exploration is presented in three manuscripts and one report. The first manuscript describes a perinatal health fair intended to connect local parents to community resources. The second manuscript is a 12-month autoethnography (i.e., first-person narrative) about the culture of DandI Science, including the role, impact, and practices of researchers themselves. The third manuscript presents the development and preliminary testing of FUEL (focus, unplug, exercise, love), a one-on-one coaching program for DandI researchers. The final report includes the history of randomized controlled trials as the gold standard for physical activity research, as well as critical analysis of using phenomenology to reduce the research-practice gap. Findings from the first manuscript suggest that (1) authentic relationship building was the key to launching a perinatal health fair that developed into a non-profit organization and (2) the RE-AIM (Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, Maintenance) Framework is a user-friendly DandI tool for implementing and evaluating a health fair. Findings from the second manuscript include descriptions of (1) blind spots within the DandI Science culture, (2) potential of autoethnography as a novel DandI method, and (3) strategies to optimize DandI researchers' capacity to thrive amid challenges. Findings from the third manuscript suggest that the FUEL coaching program is a promising and feasible approach to support researchers in leading "a more productive, healthier, and happier life," as one participant wrote. Future research on the program is needed to evaluate causation and whether organizations would adopt it. Conclusions in the final report include that (1) the applicability of physical activity research to daily life may be limited by deeply held scientific ideologies and (2) phenomenology, as the study of human meaning, may facilitate the translation of research to real-world behavior change. Based on the research presented in this dissertation, three pathways for advancing DandI Science are methods for how we conduct research studies, paradigms for how we collectively approach health science, and practices for how we manage our energy and awareness. ▼ Older adults represent one of the fastest growing populations as well as one of the most inactive. The effects of inactivity (e.g., fall risk, reduced quality of life, inability to age in place) may be mitigated through health promotion programs that include strength-training components. In addition to targeted exercises, it is recommended that programs for older adults incorporate principles of group dynamics (e.g., group goal setting, group distinctiveness) as these types of interventions have previously increased adherence and compliance of physical activity beyond the life of the program and are more effective than individually delivered interventions (e.g., at home DVD, one-on-one). However, these programs are not readily adopted and sustained in practice, which could reflect a lack of programmatic fit within the intended delivery setting. Forming a partnership with key stakeholders within the intended practice setting (e.g., communities and clinics) to identify or develop an evidence-based program that satisfies the mission, values, and resources of the deliver setting, may influence program uptake and sustainability. It is essential to assess setting- and staff-level perceptions of program fit prior to successful implementation. Once interventions are embedded within the standards of care or practice, the intervention has the potential to reach a greater number of older adults and improve their functional fitness outcomes. These intervention attributes are outlined in the prominent RE-AIM Framework: Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance. Taken together, practice- and research- adaptations may increase the adoption of an intervention, and it is necessary to also measure the degree to which an adapted program impacts Reach, Effect, Implementation, and Maintenance. Practice- and evidence-based adaptations are often necessary and inevitable to improve intervention fit within an intended delivery setting. The overall objective of this dissertation was to use an integrated research-practice partnership approach to select, adapt, and evaluate effects of a multi-faceted strength-training program for older adults in community and clinical settings. The aim of Manuscript 1 was to describe the process by which an evidence-based intervention was adapted to meet the needs of a community entity as well as the initial Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance dimensions of the RE-AIM framework. Manuscript 2 aims to evaluate the initial Reach of older adults and Effect on functional fitness of the adapted program, LIFT, to generate evidence in support of the adapted intervention through an integrated research-practice partnership with a community entity.
