▼ In this project, I examine narrative strategies used by writers of the American West to create, discuss and critique "American" identities. The work of contemporary multi-ethnic US authors including Jessica Hagedorn's Dogeaters and Dream Jungle, Nina Revoyr's Southland, and Manuel Muñoz's What You See in the Dark, I argue, should not be considered as a separate category of American literature, but rather a part of an on-going conversation within twentieth and twenty-first century American literatures. These texts are a part of a crucial and often overlooked component of American literatures. They reveal a legacy of denied belonging that supports cycles of structural, cultural, and personal violences against marginalized subjects. Since multi-ethnic literature of the US and multi- ethnic US subjects are diverse and shifting, and do not rely solely on geographical, national, or physical limitations, they are thus difficult to define. Yet the authors included in this project use that very ambiguity as a potential for interrogating the concepts of "America," "American subject" and "American literature" to reveal how American experiences, ideologies, and rhetorics challenge, complicate, allow, or deny belonging in America, and contributions to American narratives. These authors - Hagedorn, Revoyr, and Muñoz - I suggest, take on the challenge of representing minority experiences while also seeking to define an America that envisions the multiplicity which is foundational in narratives of America, but which is so often excluded in practices of national belonging. In order to make this argument, I investigate the relationships between national identity and transnational affiliation, between visibility and violence, between subjectivity and identity, and between kinship and affiliation. My project draws on recent critical conversations on identity in US multi-ethnic literature, and I build upon work by scholars including Lisa Lowe and David Eng that foregrounds the fluidity of identity in order to examine the effect of racializing processes that are built into cultural discourses on people and communities of different levels - local, national, transnational and global. These conversations also reveal a central concern of US multi- ethnic literature and scholarship to be the deconstruction of essentialism, and what Yen Le Espiritu calls the "emergent quality" of panethnicity present for ethnic Americans and ethnic American scholars. Multi-ethnic literature of the US presents opportunities to identify and counteract discourses of power that produce and are obscured by essentialist concepts of ethnic identities. However, such deconstructions, while they reveal unequal power structures, might also be seen to limit the possibilities for minority empowerment through political mobilization. ▼ Virginia City, Nevada, epitomized and continues to epitomize a liminal community – existing on the very limen of the civilized and uncivilized, legitimate and illegitimate, parochial frontier and cosmopolitan metropolis. Throughout a 150-year history, its theaters attracted performers of national and international acclaim who entertained a diverse civic population. Many Comstock performers found success through the promotion of their own `exoticism,' navigating the seductive ambiguity of cultural liminality. Virginia City historically represented a major crossroads of transformation and innovation defined by its: (1) multi-layered liminality; (2) community-building efforts (music, parades, and theater); (3) interconnectivity to San Francisco and associated amenities; (4) carefully cultivated place myths; and, (5) role as a tourist space for play and fantasy. A sophisticated nineteenth-century metropolis with a multicultural landscape and wide array of amenities, its twentieth-century shade represented the converse. The population nearly vanished along with any semblances of its former diversity. Amenities were spare: isolation, silence, and expansive vistas. Residents were drawn to the area by Comstock family lineage, the desire to languish in reclusiveness, and/or frontier myths propagated by Popular Culture and perpetuated by local proprietors. Among the latter were colorful Bohemians (e.g. Duncan Emrich, Lucius Beebe, and Charles Clegg) who stemmed the community's slide into decay while fabricating and performing a Wild West of their own styling. In the 1950s and 60s, Bonanza and Gunsmoke brought tourists; the area celebrated its first tangible economy since the mines and brothels closed in the early twentieth century. Tourism came at a cost, though, as the Bohemians – increasingly alienated by crowds and kitsch – fled for their eccentric lives. Comstock business owners, nonetheless, spun fabulous legends, independent of any facts, transforming their city and its history. In 1965, however, real legends arrived. Fifty long-haired Bay Area Hipsters came to explore the Comstock's multi-layered liminality, re-establish the area's role as San Francisco's exurb, build an alternate community through ritual and music, and perform their own frontier expectations. Hipsters coalescing around the Red Dog Saloon inadvertently developed many of the primary features of a Counterculture soon to take San Francisco by storm. The result? ▼ Hypertension is the most important cardiovascular risk factor worldwide, contributing to half the burden of coronary heart disease (Whitworth, 2003). Recent epidemiological studies have concluded that age-standardized prevalence rates are significantly increasing, despite concurrent improvements in raising cardiovascular disease awareness, prevention and control (Cutler et al., 2008). Several psychological and behavioral factors have been related to increased cardiovascular risk and traditional biobehavioral treatments have shown success in helping patients achieve blood pressure control. However, they are often insufficient in managing the burden of HTN and are often time intensive and costly. For this reason, it has been argued that developing treatments targeting common psychopathogens contributing to cardiovascular risk across multiple pathways may provide one venue for improving clinical outcomes, while keeping treatments brief and cost effective. As a pilot investigation, 64 eligible patients diagnosed with HTN were recruited and randomized to receive ACT-enhanced disease education or disease education with Supportive Instruction. Eligible participants were scheduled for an intake assessment where they provided written informed consent, completed baseline assessments measuring psycho-social, behavioral, and physiological variables of cardiovascular risk, and participated in a thirty-minute didactic disease education training. Individuals were then randomized to either receive four, weekly individual sessions of ACT or supportive instruction. Results revealed that the impact of an ACT intervention combined with disease education demonstrated some additive benefits as compared to disease education with continued supportive instruction. In particular, participants allocated to receive ACT combined with disease education demonstrated greater reductions in negative affectivity and general psychological distress, and greater improvements in quality of life, physical activity, and motivation, while demonstrating equivocal findings to disease education alone with respect to reductions in other behavioral and physiological measures of cardiovascular risk. Statistical evaluation of purported processes of change was also examined. Outcomes suggest that although many of the process variables were related to cardiovascular risk factors at baseline, they failed to independently mediate treatment responses, likely due to the methodological challenges noted with BP administration and measurement and the small sample size retained through follow-up. Given the limitations of this study, continued efforts to elucidate mechanisms of change are warranted. Advisors/Committee Members: Hayes, Steven C. ▼ In a global era, identity categories take on new meanings as globalized communities and all their accompanying tokens of identification (social, political, and personal) are formed and placed into competition with previously-held national and local identities. This dissertation explores the ways in which immigrant writers have conceived of identity, grappling not only with the social conditions which give rise to individual and collective identities, but also how these projects are depicted in the literary form. It's clear that an emerging subcategory of writers exists, particularly among immigrant writers, whose literature not only reflects, but also attempts to articulate the concerns of globalization. Because globalization directly impacts our view of interconnections between people, in other words, our notions of community and interpersonal connections, it also directly influences our view of the self and how social and personal identities are formed. It is natural, then, to speak simultaneously of globalization and identity when discussing the impacts globalization has had on the body of American literature. Furthermore, because immigrants are the most socially and economically vulnerable to the forces of globalization, the fiction of immigrant writers tends to strongly reflect transnational discourses on identity. Interconnectivity becomes important for these authors as they create their own sense of community on top of the nation and beyond its boundaries. The literary inheritance of writing produced from the ashes of postmodernism and contemporary globalization, from deterritorialization and interconnectivity, promotes writing that creates a new sense of community. In this project, I limit discussion to immigrant and first-generation writers, to those who have been most directly affected by global forces, in order to examine the ways in which globalization has influenced discussions of identity, and in turn, contemporary American literature. Through close readings of Adeline Yen Mah's Falling Leaves, Aleksandar Hemon's The Lazarus Project, Junot Díaz's Drown, and Rattawut Lapcharoensap's Sightseeing, issues which affect contemporary discourses on globalization and identity such as power, marginality, time, space, and history are explored along with their impact on the body of what I term "globalized American literature." ▼ It is important to support teachers and administrators in the commitments, understandings, and skills necessary to lead schools where professional learning communities (PLCs) are well established (Saphier, 2005).When schools operate as PLCs, educational professionals increase their capacity to create the results that they truly desire; new and expansive patterns of thinking are nurtured, collective goals are set free, and people continually strive to learn together (Senge, 1990). The purpose of this study was to explore teachers' perceptions of PLCs in a cross-section of eight elementary schools in a large, urban school district in the Western United States. Data were gathered through the Professional Learning Communities Assessment-Revised (PLCA-R). The PLCA-R assesses perceptions of the PLCs based on six subscales: (1) Shared values and vision, (2) Shared and supportive leadership, (3) Collective learning and application, (4) Shared personal practice, (5) Supportive conditions-relationships, and (6) Supportive conditions-structures. Each of the subscales was rated on Likert scale ranging from 1 = Strongly Disagree to 4 = Strongly Agree; these subscales and a total score of the subscales were used as dependent variables. The independent variables that were tested in this study were: the number of years a teacher has taught, the highest level of education attainment, years teaching at their school, elementary primary grade (K-3) versus upper grade (4-6) teachers, and score differences among the eight schools. One-way ANOVAs and t tests were conducted using the independent and dependent variables in order to answer the research questions and to understand if any significant differences existed among the variables. If differences were indicated by ANOVA, post-hoc analyses were conducted to detail where the differences were found. No significant differences in PLCA-R scores were found for highest level of education and primary versus upper grades teachers. Significant differences in the PLCA-R scores were found for the independent variables of years a teacher has taught, years teaching at this school, and among the eight schools. In addition, responses to the open-ended questions suggested that teachers enjoy collaboration and want more time to work with each other. This conclusion is aligned with several studies and current research on teacher collaboration. Advisors/Committee Members: Hill, George C. ▼ Across the Himalayan fold-thrust belt, high-grade metamorphic rocks of the Greater Himalayan (GH) zone are juxtaposed between low-grade metasedimentary rocks structurally above and below. In Bhutan, the highergrade GH rocks lie structurally over lower-grade Lesser Himalayan rocks and are separated by the Main Central Thrust. However, many aspects of the deformation path, deformation conditions, and the emplacement mechanism that led to the exhumation of GH rocks are poorly understood. In this study geologic mapping and quantitative microstructural analysis are utilized to gain insight into the deformation history of GH rocks in Bhutan, and to test the applicability of end-member emplacement models. Microstructural datasets include characterization of kinematic indicators, determination of deformation temperatures through analysis of quartz deformation microstructures and quartz crystal-preferred orientation (CPO) data, and classification of strain and shear type using CPO and kinematic vorticity data. Semi-quantitative deformation–temperature estimates obtained from cataloguing quartz-recrystallization mechanisms, combined with quantitative temperature estimates from CPO plot opening angles, suggest that GH rocks were deformed at temperatures of ca. 500 to 750°C at both structurally-lower and higher levels, and were later overprinted by a lower-temperature recrystallization event around that occurred at conditions of ca. 400–500°C. The highertemperature recrystallization event is interpreted to be associated with earlier slip (~22–15 Ma) along the Main Central Thrust, at or near peak metamorphic temperature conditions. The lower-temperature overprint is interpreted to have occurred at a higher point along the pressure–temperature–deformation path as GH rocks were passively translated and structurally elevated southward, concurrent with duplexing of Lesser Himalayan rocks (~18–10 Ma). Internal deformation within structurally-lower and higher GH rocks consisted of components of both coaxial (pure shear) and non-coaxial (simple shear) strain, as indicated by localities with opposite shear-sense kinematics, type-I crossgirdle CPO patterns and kinematic vorticity, which suggests that exhumation of GH rocks was accompanied by significant flattening in north-central and northeast Bhutan. ▼ A major problem for irrigated agricultural production in arid and semi-arid environments is salinization of land. Irrigated land accounts for about one third of the world's food, but nearly one fifth of irrigated lands are salt affected and suffer from reduced yield due to soil salinization. Many farmers worldwide currently leach their lands to remove salt, but this practice can create further problems such as polluting nearby water sources with salt, fertilizer, and pesticides. Most common cultivated crops are known as glycophytes and suffer from reduced yield when subjected to salt stress. However, about 1% of the world's flora are known as halophytes, or plants that are capable of completing their life-cycle in higher saline soil or water environments. Halophytes are not commonly cultivated, but may be useful for human consumption, biofuel, or animal consumption. As a first step to assessing the potential of halophytic plants for salinity management, the Agricultural Policy/Environmental Extender (APEX) model was updated with a module to simulate plant-water-soil salinity dynamics using electrical conductance. The halophytes Atriplex nitens, Climacoptera lanata, and Salicornia europeae were parameterized in the APEX model's plant database. Plant, soil, and water data from field sites in the Central Kyzylkum and Khorezm regions of Uzbekistan were used to set up APEX models for two field sites. Measured data collected from the two field sites in 2013 were used to assess model performance. Although APEX ran with the salinity module and produced output, analysis of the output indicated that further work is needed to produce a model that will be useful for assessing salinity management with halophytes. A sensitivity analysis was performed on 47 parameters in APEX, and 14 were found to be sensitive for biomass, crop height, and soil electrical conductance (EC) output, including soil parameters such as soil albedo, sand content, and silt content. After running 500 simulations with random combinations of sensitive parameters, best fit results between observed and modeled values for crop biomass, crop height, and soil EC had deviations of as much as 42.5 tonnes/ha biomass, 200 cm of crop height and 23 mS/cm of EC, respectively. Suggestions for model improvements include enabling the modeling of individual salt ions because plants may experience toxic effects of different ions. Additionally, halophytes and conventional crops will die or fail to germinate under threshold salinity levels, but this relationship was not demonstrated with the model. Some halophytes have an increased yield under moderate soil salt levels, and salt can percolate into deeper soil layers, but these phenomena were also not simulated by the model. Future iterations of this project will benefit from more field data. Daily weather from the modeled time period should be used instead of generated weather based on monthly statistics. Plant and soil data should be taken at more frequent intervals, preferably at least once a month. ▼ In order to test (1) among driving mechanisms for exhumation of the migmatitic Greater Himalayan zone (GHZ) in central and eastern Bhutan; and (2) the significance of the Kakhtang thrust (KT), an out of sequence thrust that divides the GHZ into upper (GHSu) and lower (GHZl) structural levels, zircon and monazite from twenty samples from the Lesser Himalayan zone (LHZ) and the GHZ were analyzed for U–Th–Pb isotopes and trace-element abundances using split-stream laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS). Cathodoluminescence images of the zircons typically revealed three generations of crystallization: (1) an inherited or prograde-to-peak metamorphic core; (2) an oscillatory-zoned, intermediate area in some leucocratic samples, interpreted as recording melt crystallization; and/or (3) an outermost, unzoned metamorphic rim around zone 2 in leucocratic samples or around the inherited cores of gneiss and pelitic samples. These three phases of zircon growth record the Eocene-Miocene burial and metamorphism of Neoproterozoic-Ordovician marine sedimentary rocks that originally lay off the margin of India prior to India-Asia collision. In eastern Bhutan, ca. 36–27 Ma prograde-to-peak metamorphism in the GHZu was followed by melt crystallization from ca. 27–21 Ma in most of the GHZu, with slightly younger dates of ca. 21–17 Ma near the KT. Coeval to later continued metamorphism until ca. 24–13 Ma was recorded in the outermost, unzoned zircon rims and in monazite crystals from the GHZu and GHZl. In comparison, in central Bhutan, similar to slightly younger, ca. 38–22 Ma prograde-to-peak metamorphism occurred in the GHZl. In addition, GHZu leucosomes recorded ca. 27–21 Ma melt crystallization and ca. 21–13 Ma metamorphism. Calculated zircon/garnet partition coefficients (TEDzir/grt) showed garnet-present zircon growth for the prograde-to-peak metamorphic ages. However, the majority of trace-element patterns showed negative Eu anomalies (plagioclase-stable) and moderate to steep HREE slopes (garnet-unstable) for zircon and monazite that recorded the timing of melt crystallization and the latest metamorphism. Overall, the youngest metamorphic ages from all samples were within error of each other; thus, the ages did not vary across the KT, suggesting that the KT was not as significant of a structure as previously described. Moreover, a critical taper-type emplacement model predicts that melt crystallization and metamorphism will occur nearly homogeneously across the section. In contrast, a channel flow-type exhumation model predicts heat advection towards the surface, causing the dates to young towards the center of the channel. Based on the data presented above, the results favor more of a critical-taper style of exhumation. ▼ The Eureka Mining District is located in the northern part of the Fish Creek Range in east-central Nevada. In this study, 1:6,000-scale geologic mapping and structural analysis were performed in the southern part of the district in order to identify structural controls on mineralization. This project bridges a gap between recent regional-scale mapping studies and detailed (<1:500) mapping performed in an active gold exploration campaign. A geologic map of a ~3.5 km (east-west) by ~8 km (north-south) region was generated, along with five deformed and restored cross-sections that illustrate the post- and pre-extensional deformation geometry. The stratigraphy of the map area consists of ca. 4 km of Cambrian to Devonian rocks that are dominated by carbonates, which, in turn, are unconformably overlain and intruded by Late Eocene silicic volcanic rocks. The map area is composed of four distinct structural systems, including Early Cretaceous contractional structures which include the Eureka culmination and blind Ratto Canyon thrust, and three separate sets of normal faults: 1) 1st-order, km-scale offset, down-to-the-west normal faults, which include the Lookout Mountain and Dugout Tunnel faults, 2) 2nd-order, 10's to 100's meter-offset normal faults, including the Rocky Canyon, Oswego, and East Ratto Ridge fault systems, and 3) a 3rd-order set of sub-meter scale offset, east-striking extensional faults that offset the presumed Late Eocene jasperoid bodies. The 1st- and 2nd-order faulting can be bracketed between Late Cretaceous (ca. 86 Ma), the age of contact metamorphism in northern Rocky Canyon that is cut by the Dugout Tunnel fault, and Late Eocene (ca. 37 Ma), based on the overlapping relationship of a sub-volcanic unconformity. The Eureka district is characterized by silver-lead polymetallic carbonate replacement and Carlin-type gold deposits, which are the two primary deposit-types in the project area. In addition to lithology and structure, specific types of hydrothermal alteration and mineralization were mapped, including silicification, decarbonatization, dolomitization, quartz/calcite-veining, argillization, and the introduction of sulfides and their limonite weathering products. Through this method two distinct mineralization events were identified. Polymetallic mineralization, characterized by dolomitization, argillization, and quartz-veining, resides in the northern part of the map area in Rocky Canyon. It is interpreted to be genetically-related to Late Cretaceous granitic magmatism, which indicates that it pre-dates timing extension along 1st- and 2nd-order normal faults. The Carlin-type mineralization occurs as a series of deposits, mainly along Ratto Ridge. The deposits are associated with strong decarbonatization, strong silicification and jasperoid formation, and argillization. This Carlin-type deposit is temporally constrained to be pre- or syn-Late Eocene, due to overlap and intrusion of dated silicic-volcanic rocks. ▼ AbstractThis study reviews the U.S. Constitutional foundations that empowered the Congress to preclude state regulation of medical devices, vaccines and generic pharmaceutical drugs approved for marketing and distribution by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).The study initially travels through the history of how the states, under their "police powers," attended to the health and welfare of the public, by regulating food and drugs and how the Congress and the FDA through the "Supremacy Clause" and the "Commerce Clause" of the U.S. Constitution encroached into that domain incrementally over the past 100 years. In the past decades the FDA has almost totally dominated the area of drug, vaccine and device safety standards empowered by a series of federal statutes and regulations. But the greatest domination over the states has been through a few recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions that have expanded federal regulatory preemption into precluding state common law suits by individuals, who sought compensation from the manufacturers of FDA approved medical devices and generic drugs, which they claimed caused them injury or death.This study addresses the competing national interest of maintaining the public health with the necessity of maintaining a business environment where drug and device manufacturers can conduct research and development while limiting the cost of defending lawsuits throughout the fifty states and territories, with their disparate regulatory schemes and restoring the legal rights of individuals, who are injured by medical devices and generic drugs.To accomplish these goals, this study proposes Congressional legislation expressly preempting state regulation of FDA approved drugs and devices while also precluding individuals from suing drug and device manufacturers in state or federal courts for injuries or deaths caused by those FDA approved products. The same proposed legislation would create a specialized non-jury court to adjudicate claims where the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, rather than drug and device manufacturers, will be the defendant in such actions, which is similar to the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986. Medical expenses of the injured persons would be paid for by the affordable health care act mandatory health care insurance policies. Compensation for claimants' pain and suffering, and other compensatory damages such as lost wages along with attorney fees would be paid from an established fund to pay and administer those claims. ▼ Perceptions of opportunity and the costs and benefits associated with pursuing higher education have been investigated by social scientists though not tied to an understanding of how students and their families navigate the educational system. Research has focused on the point of transition and neglected the process of arriving there. In particular the roles of certain preparatory activities in which students engage and for which schools provide services and resources remain terra incognita. To address this gap in research, this study investigated the availability and identification of useful knowledge held in both family and school relationships that supports procedural preparation for college and explains the persistence of unequal circumstances on educational pathways. Using the Educational Longitudinal Survey (2002-2006, students = 16k; schools = 750) and by means of multilevel structural equation modeling (MSEM), discussions with parents about preparing for college had a consistent, positive influence on procedural preparation independent of social background or achievement. Discussions with parents had a positive influence on the timing of academic procedures, such as taking entrance exams, as well as application behaviors, such as applying for financial aid. Friends behaviors and student beliefs about college cost also had an influence on procedural preparation. That said, academic achievement was the most important predictor of procedural preparation and enrollment in college. The intervening role of achievement revealed how disadvantages that were evident at the beginning of high school became expressed in behaviors that facilitate educational attainment. Historically under-represented students were the least likely to engage in early preparation due to poor math achievement. School norms and services did explain a small proportion of procedural preparation and enrollment; but, school effects were very small. There are important implications of this research for developing college knowledge, especially for school counselors and auxiliary college preparation services (e.g. Upward Bound, GEAR UP). Students need to have strong academic achievement coming out of middle school and into high school to effectively prepare for college. Students need the support of families and friends to develop college awareness and engage in college preparation. ▼ In American juvenile law, the judicial transfer decision, or waiver of jurisdiction, is a legal maneuver by which young offenders are diverted away from the juvenile justice system and subsequently processed and adjudicated within adult systems of law. Although transfer decisions have a long history in modern American jurisprudence, social science has largely neglected to perform a comprehensive inquiry of the social psychological underpinnings of judicial waivers. The extant social psycholegal research hints to potential links between transfer decision-making and three categories of variables: (a) terror management and social information-processing, (b) uncertainty management and attributional reasoning, and (c) statutory and nonstatutory sources of influence. Two social theories (i.e., the dual-process theory of proximal/distal defenses and uncertainty avoidance/causal attribution theory), as well as the literature on judicial waivers, provided three alternative predictions about the nature of the transfer decision-making process. The first theory predicts that implicit mortality salience (MS) cues activate the experiential system, including terror-reducing distal defenses. The processing of vulnerability cues by legal decision-makers could undermine their inferences about a given case and encourage biased decision-making via extralegal analysis. The second theory presumes that the social context of legal decision-making is inherently inexact or uncertain. To the extent that cases are perceived as ambiguous, legal decision-makers could be prompted to apply attributional reasoning styles designed to manage uncertainty, manage crime and improve the likelihood of identifying satisfactory decision-making outcomes. Finally, in contrast to both social theories, research purports that transfer decisions emerge from a reconciliatory-type process which differentially weighs a wide array of statutory and nonstatutory sources of influence. In order to examine the three variable-categories within the context of an ambiguous waiver of jurisdiction hearing, a two-part experimental approach was adopted. Most legal decision-making studies that have applied terror management theory have relied on traditional mortality salience (MS) induction methodologies (e.g., death essays) without consideration of natural "social ecologies" wherein MS processes occur. Study 1, a simple four-group experiment with 192 college student participants, compared the impact of traditional MS cues (i.e., death essays) versus ecological MS cues (i.e., death-laden prosecutorial statements) on mock-juror behavior. In Study 2, a mock-waiver hearing vignette was embedded in an experimental-based survey. ▼ The neurodegenerative disorder, Alzheimer's Disease (AD), is the most common cause of senile dementia, or loss of brain function in the elderly population. The development of AD can be attributed to the formation of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides, which range from 37 to 43 residues in length and result from cleavage of the Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP). One such peptide, Aβ(42) (DAEFR HDSGY EVHHQ KLVFF AEDVG SNKGA IIGLM VGGVV IA), is highly neurotoxic and aggregates readily to form soluble oligomers. Mutations occurring in the N-terminus region of the of the Aβ peptide are known to cause early onset AD, in which a patient develops AD in their early 40's. In one such mutation, known as the English Mutant, the histidine residue at position 6 in the amino acid sequence is replaced with an arginine residue, denoted Aβ(42)H6R. X-ray absorption and EPR spectroscopy were applied to Aβ(42)H6R oligomers in order to probe the coordination environment of Cu(II) and Cu(I). The formation of soluble oligomers was confirmed by GPC, FT-IR and a Thioflavin-T fluorescence binding assay. X-band EPR studies on Aβ(42) H6R Cu(II) oligomers indicate a four-coordinate square planar geometry for Cu(II). When one equivalent of ascorbate was introduced into the complex the Cu center was reduced and the EPR signal disappeared which leads to a hypothesis that the Cu(I) coordination environment is held in a redox inactive linear bis-His geometry. Cu K-edge XAS was carried out on the Aβ(42) H6R oligomers to corroborate the hypothesis of the linear bis-His geometry of Cu(I). The XANES region of Cu(II) bound Aβ(42) H6R was consistent with the EPR study and yielded a mixture of two different four-coordinate geometries with N/O ligation. As the EPR data suggested, the XANES region for Aβ(42) H6R Cu(I) returned a linear bis-His coordination environment. For both the XAS and the EPR spectra, no change was seen in the spectra after exposure to air for several days. This indicated a lack of peptide degradation due to the inert redox activity about the Cu center which was confirmed by HPLC over several days. We see that soluble oligomers of Aβ(42) H6R behave like Aβ monomers and are completely redox inactive which may suggest that an imbalance of metal ion homeostasis in the brain is causative of AD pathogenesis. ▼ Dispersal is an emergent property of biological systems existing in a spatial world. Specifically, if rules governing autonomous biological agents are to (i) acquire and utilize resources to respectively (ii) metabolize and reproduce, then space is a limiting factor in areas with finite resources. Further, if parents have a greater ability to acquire resources than filial generations, only offspring of the ultimate reproduction event would have a survival probability greater than zero. Therefore, we observe movement away from parents (dispersal) as a ubiquitous phenomenon observed in all biological systems that increases the ability of biological agents to acquire resources and reproduce.From a perspective of multiple parents reproducing over time in a finite area (i.e., an ecological population) dispersal is a collective property that is generally relative to two factors: (i) population turnover (i.e., availability of previously used resources [occupied patches]) and (ii) environmental heterogeneity (i.e., availability of new resources [new patches]). If fecundity is normalized, dispersal distributions (frequency or density distribution as a function of distance expressed in one or two dimensions) are examined as the kurtosis of the sum of all parents' offspring individually or collectively. Further, dispersal metrics (kurtosis of individuals or populations) can be measured demographically where individuals are the unit or genetically where genes from an individual contribute to the gene pool.To disperse, organic life has evolved an array of mechanisms (e.g., structures like flagella, fins; behaviors like density dependent dispersal) at all life stages (e.g., diploid zygotes or diaspores, haploid gametes, reproductive adults, non-reproductive juveniles). In the seed plants (spermatophytes) that macroscopically dominate and energetically support virtually all terrestrial ecosystems through primary productivity, dispersal can occur at two life stages: haploid pollen dispersal and diploid seed dispersal. The outcome of each type of dispersal is different, with pollen being of uniparental (paternal) origin and strictly contributing to genetic (gene flow) but not demographic dispersal, and seeds being of biparental origin and contributing to demographic and likely genetic dispersal if ecological establishment it achieved.Plants have evolved different means of dispersing seeds, generally by adaptation to abiotic and biotic vectors.
