This thesis discusses the tribological behaviour of deterministic metallic surfaces obtained by Photochemical Machining Process (PCM). The first stage includes the characterization of snake skin, which was used as inspiration for the design of the deterministic patterns. The characterization of the skin allowed to identify geometrical parameters in macroscale and microscale that were used for manufacturing the AISI 52100 steel samples. The samples were tested in a pin-on-disc tribometer where the COF was measured and the main wear mechanisms were identified with the aid of microscopic examination on worn surfaces. Also, a theoretical assessment was developed to corroborate the frictional response explanation of the deterministic surfaces on the stage where COF achieves a constant behaviour. The numerical approach showed good agreement with the experimental results and was able to represent the influence of the variation of the Percentage of Texturized Area (PTA) and sliding direction on the coefficient of friction with a marked anisotropic response, besides, by showing a trend similar to the tribological tests.
