1. Randall, Kristina Marie. Longitudinal Case Study: Expressive Language in a Bimodal Bilingual Child with ASD.

Degree: MA, Speech Pathology and Audiology, 2020, Miami University

Hearing children of Deaf adults (CODAs) present a special case of language acquisition: they acquire the sign language of their parents and the ambient spoken language they hear; thus, their bilingualism is bimodal. Though many studies have investigated the typical acquisition of sign and speech by bimodal bilingual children, little is currently known about atypical development. We present here the first case study of a bimodal bilingual child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this case study, we explore whether the developmental trajectory is the same in sign and speech, or if one modality is advantaged over the other in this atypical learner. Production of English and American Sign Language (ASL) was examined at ages 4;11, 6;6, 9;11, and 14;11 and analyzed for syntactic complexity, semantic complexity, echolalia, and modalities used. The child exhibited significant language impairment in both modalities. The results suggest that sign communication is not necessarily advantaged over speech in this child's overall expressive language development. Advisors/Committee Members: Shield, Aaron (Advisor).
