1. Musgrave, Ryan L. Developing Pedagogical Expertise in Athletic Training Faculty.

Degree: Doctor of Education (EdD), Education, 2019, University of Findlay

The discipline of athletic training is a specialized academic field which has been evolving significantly since the early 2000’s. It is suggested in the literature there is a lack of pedagogical background among the faculty who deliver the instruction identified by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) at institutions across the nation. The pedagogical backgrounds of faculty have been previously examined but none have explored how Athletic Training faculty have developed their pedagogical expertise. This qualitative study examined the lived experiences of six novice and six experienced educators to determine what has been beneficial in their development as an educator. Structured interviews were conducted with the 12 participants and each of them were presented with five identical questions regarding what has and has not been beneficial to their development. The interview transcripts were examined for common themes among each of the five interview questions. Common items which were identified as being beneficial to both novice and experienced educators were informal mentoring, observation and evaluation, and professional development. Those which were identified as not beneficial to novice educators were student course evaluations, role strain and lack of consistent feedback from supervisors. Experienced educators also identified student course evaluations as being non-beneficial along with applicability and cost of professional development activities. Through this research educators and administrators might be able to help faculty members more efficiently and effectively develop their pedagogical expertise. Advisors/Committee Members: Rife, Gwynne (Committee Chair).
