1. Ren, Luying. Enhancement of the Mechanical Properties of Co-extruded Fiber Reinforced Tape by Uniaxial Orientation.

Semi-crystalline polyamide (PA6), poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and amorphous glycol modified PET (PETG) were used to produce two fiber reinforced tape systems – PA6/PETG and PA6/PETG/PET. The effect of orientation on mechanical properties for both systems was studied and compared in this work. In PA6/PETG system, PA6 was fiber and PETG was matrix. The composition of PA6 was 30%, 50% and 70%. Mechanical properties for oriented tapes were enhanced with increasing PA6 composition. For oriented PA6/PETG tape having 70% PA6, the optimum Young’s modulus and tensile strength were enhanced 2 times and 8 times respectively. For PA6/PETG/PET system, PA6 and PET were fibers with the same composition of 42.5%, while PETG was the separating layer. The optimum Young’s modulus and tensile strength of oriented tapes were 3 times and 9 times respectively than as-extruded tape. Orientation improved mechanical performance for co-extruded fiber reinforced tapes, especially relative to the tensile strength. Advisors/Committee Members: Baer, Eric (Advisor).
