1. Kreiger, Alana Anne, 1991-. Witnessed Violence and Subsequent Involvement in the Criminal Justice System.

Degree: Department of Criminology & Criminal Justice, 2019, Central Connecticut State University

Research suggests that many people are exposed to violence throughout childhood, adolescence, and adulthood; but there is more limited research on how witnessed violence may relate to future criminal engagements. The objective of this research is to look at witnessed violence and subsequent criminal justice involvement, which was stratified by gender and race. Specifically, this research attempts to determine the proportions of witnessed violence (WV) and criminal justice involvement (CJI). Participants in this research project were involved with the Department of Children and Families (DCF) and administered two, separate self-report surveys to assess their beliefs about exposure to violence and any subsequent involvement in the criminal justice system. The study has determined that witnessed violence is not correlated with criminal justice involvement among individuals with DCF involvement. This study may be underpowered to detect small differences as the vast majority of respondents had neither reported witnessing violence or involvement in the criminal justice system. To better account for this in the future, studies may want to prospectively follow individuals and track exposure to violence not only in the home, but also in broader contexts (i.e. school, neighborhoods etc.). Larger, longitudinal studies are needed to determine any causal relationships between witnessed violence and criminal justice involvement in this study population. These results are likely important for future criminal justice policy regarding at-risk youth.
