During the Second World War, consumption of a variety of goods and services experienced changes. This was due to rationing, supply shortages and sometimes patriotism, as the American government launched several campaigns to encourage frugality. This essay is examining what kinds of goods and services was advertised in The New York Times during 1937, 1940 and 1943. The data retrieved from this is then analysed to see how advertised goods and services changed, and what these changes could depend upon. The conclusions are that in 1943, the ration of goods to services has changed. The amount of advertised goods has decreased, and instead goods and services related to the war has increased. The main reason for the decrease in advertised goods is rationing. Many categories of services have also decreased, also often due to rationing.
