The fifth-order aberration coefficients for gradient index lenses are derived using Lagrangian methods. Examples are given of axial and radial gradient singlets. The aberrations of lenses containing spherical gradients are considered. The radius of curvature of the gradient is demonstrated to be an extra degree of freedom. </br>The fabrication process of gradient materials is studied and models are devised for describing the refractive index, spectral, and mechanical properties of gradient index materials. The predictions of the models compare well with the experimentally fabricated gradient index samples. Classes of achromatic or spectrally invariant gradients are discovered.
