This thesis constitutes another stride in the long march toward a better understanding of how the brain employs the olivocerebellar system and its plasticity mechanisms to accommodate procedural and associative learning as well as the skillful and adaptable execution of complex movements and mental processes. At the level of the cerebellar cortex (Part I), the cerebellar nuclei (Part II), and the olivocerebellar system as a whole (Part III), experiments employing electrophysiology, behavioral paradigms (in particular classical eyeblink conditioning), optogenetics, histology, and mouse transgenics, have led to numerous insights. Together, the data underline the distributed nature of plasticity in the olivocerebellar system, the necessity of considering both the high degree of similarity as well as the subtle differences across the highly-structured cerebellum in unraveling its function, and the importance of studying the olivocerebellar system beyond the motor domain in the realms of emotion, cognition, and social function.
