1. Park, Min. Effect of weighted ball hold training on pitching mechanics of baseball players.

The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the effects of weighted-ball hold training on the proper pelvis-torso sequencing and ball velocity of baseball pitchers. Three pitchers participated in the weighted-ball hold training (supervised training for a total of 12 sessions over 4-6 weeks). Proper pelvis-torso sequencing was defined as achieving maximal angular velocity of the pelvis before maximal angular velocity of the torso during each pitch. The training program required participants to complete weighted-ball holds with medicine balls of 1.5 kg, 2 kg, and 2.5 kg for 2 sets of 10 repetitions for each weight. Participant 1 demonstrated proper sequencing in 6 out of 10 trials before the training and 9 out of 10 trials after the training. Participant 2 exhibited proper sequencing in 8 out of 10 trials before training and 3 out of 10 trials after training. Finally, participant 3 displayed proper sequencing in 9 out of 10 trials before training and 5 out of 10 trials after training. Furthermore, mean ball velocity increased for the participants 1-3 from pre-training to post-training (67.6 ?? 2.2 mph vs. 70.4 ?? 1.2 mph for participant 1, 55.7 ?? 1.8 mph vs. 57.7 ?? 1.4 mph for participant 2, and 64.5 ?? 2.6 mph vs. 67.1 ?? 1.7 mph for participant 3). Kinematic data, which included peak angular velocity of the pelvis and torso, was similar with previous literature. Temporal variables included time to peak pelvis and torso angular velocity and was measured as a percent of the pitch cycle from stride foot contact to ball release. These variables occurred later in the participants when compared to previous studies. This could be explained by the participants pitching on flat ground instead of the mound or from methods of estimating pitch cycle for each trial.
