Dynamic user interface is the idea that a user interface should change dynamically depending on certain user characteristics. In our case, the user characteristic desired is the user cognitive style. This study will take the first step toward that dynamic goal, where we will first focus on if we can accurately predict user cognitive styles based on user eye gaze information. To proceed with this goal, we asked forty participants to perform fifty tasks. Each task asked the user to answer a question based on a graph. Visual aids were available to the user as well, and users had the option to turn on or off any visual aids. We then collapsed the collected data and extracted various features of any fixations and saccades that were included in one of eight areas of interest (AOI). Afterwards, we calculated various statistics for these fixations that can be used as features in our machine learning process. During the machine learning process, we employed Weka as our machine learning tool. The inputs were the features and the outputs were either High/Low or High/Medium/Low for user cognitive styles, where High means more Field Dependent and Low means more Field Independent. Our results indicated that using either the Random Tree or Random Forest Tree classifier produced the most accurate results. Thus, one of these two decision tree models should be used to predict user cognitive style based on eye gaze information.
