This curriculum project is designed to provide basic literacy instruction to adult English language learners who are not yet literate in any language. The curriculum is based on the needs of non-print-literate immigrants enrolled in ESL programs in community-based organizations in the Sacramento region, and is designed to be implementable by any organization that serves this demographic. The curriculum reflects current research in L2 reading, adult education, and non-print-literate learners. The project includes lesson plans and materials for seven thematic units of study. Units and materials reflect the everyday literacy needs of adult learners and provide meaningful connections to life outside the classroom. The curriculum provides instruction in basic literacy skills, including decoding, sight words, vocabulary, phonemic awareness, grapheme-phoneme correspondence, and letter formation. Numeracy, visual literacy, and oral skills are also integrated into the curriculum to support development of literacy and survival English. Advisors/Committee Members: Komiyama, Reiko.
