California State University – East Bay

1. Miranda, Miriam. Academic Achievement as a Function of Sex and Ethnic Background.

Degree: 2017, California State University – East Bay

The objects of this study were to determine whether sex, ethnic background, and the interaction of these variables were differentially related to academic achievements as measured by the Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills (C.T.B.S.). The population studied consisted of all fifth and sixth graders attending schools within the Berkeley (California) Unified School District. For the purpose of sampling the population was stratified along ethnic lines. Three identifiable groups were used: Asians, Blacks, and Whites. The sample was further subdivided by sex. Two parametric statistical tests were used to analyze the data. A two way analysis of variance was used to measure the relation of each of the independent variables to the dependent variable and their interactional effect. The t-test was used to analyze mean differences between each and every subgroup for each subscore and the total score. The .05 level of significance was used. With regard to ethnic and sex differences it is concluded that they are both significant variables in academic achievement. No interactional effect of sex and ethnicity upon academic achievement was found. Advisors/Committee Members: Whalen, Dr. Thomas E. (advisor), White, Dr. Robert M. (primaryAdvisor).
