A new method for the synthesis of bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) ß-ketophosphonates from bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) 1-alkynylphosphonates is described herein. Bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) 1-alkynylphosphonates can be treated with primary and secondary amines to prepare enamine vinyl phosphonates. Bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) ß-ketophosphonates are obtained after hydrolysis of the enamine vinyl phosphonate. Advisors/Committee Members: Jackson, John (Advisor).

The Michaelis-Becker reaction was extended to the synthesis of bis(2,2,2,-trifluoroethyl) phosphonates. Reaction of the anion of bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) phosphite with a series of a-halo esters produced the corresponding phosphonates in good to moderate yield.
