This dissertation explores the ways in which religious experience is supported by aesthetic structures in the works of Howard Washington Thurman, twentieth century mystic, scholar of religion, poet and pastor. I theorize the mystical aesthetic and then show how it under-girds Thurman’s understanding of black expressive culture, namely in his interpretation of the spirituals and through his preaching. I explore the artistry of the mystical aesthetic and how it is reconstituted for public purposes. In sum, Thurman’s writing about mystical experience is no mere description, but intentional display. His work is an invitation to experience the religious. Thurman’s mystical aesthetic is not an escape from the ethical life but rather a compulsion toward it. Advisors/Committee Members: Dr. Lewis V. This thesis analyzes tricksters within African and African American literature and oral culture as figures signifying methods of criticism that can enhance modern preaching practices. This project relies upon Afro-American vernacular theory to examine how the Afro-American trickster’s rhetorical repartee has influenced the production of literary works, speeches, and sermons within Afro-American culture. Ultimately, this project endeavors to re-figure understandings of the nature of African American preaching and the role of the African American preacher. Examining the rhetorical tactics of Afro-American tricksters and African American preachers reveals how the trickster has influenced members of the black Diaspora in North American in efforts to challenge racial oppression during and since slavery. In sum, this thesis proffers a modern tropological reading of tricksters within Afro-American vernacular discourse as figures signifying paradigms of criticism offering homileticians and preachers inventive, investigative models for more artful, creative, prophetic, and efficacious preaching. In this dissertation, I have raised a question about the Korean ethnic church’s failure of playing a pivotal role of leadership including proposing new visions for Korean immigrants in America, when it was urgently needed during and after the 1992 Los Angeles riots. Through my “inter(con)textual” readings of Pauline “new creation passages” such as Romans 8:18-25, 2 Corinthians 5:17, and Galatians 6:15, I have attempted to provide possible answers to this question. By reading Paul’s texts, I have argued that scholars’ conceptualization of Paul’s new creation may ignore or diminish its tangible features, which are clearly shown in Paul’s establishment of an alternative assembly of believers, the ekklēsia, as an embodiment of God’s new creation in the midst of the imperial powers. The concrete features of the new creation also appear in Paul’s collection for the poor saints in Jerusalem through which Paul sought to create an alternative economic system against the exploitative and hierarchical structure of the Roman Empire.
