1. Verbrugge, J.K. Creative reflection in industrial design.

Degree: Faculty of Engineering Technology, 2012, University of Twente

The dissertation is a reflection of the writer on his career as an industrial designer of Demand-Driven Design for a period of approximately 25 years. This period is exposed with a discussion of five designs. The projects are introduced by developments in the surrounding design landscape, such as Droog Design and Memphis. These Author Design currents wielded no or at least a very different method and were very successful in the same period. The inspiration stemming from these developments has led to insights into an alternative design method: Creative Reflection. The growing recognition that ultimately led to the creation of this method runs like a red thread through the treatment of five design cases. These cases range from the design of the Coca Cola tray in 1996 ending with the design of a series of containers for spices commissioned by Verstegen. The period in between includes the design of a paint container for Akzo Nobel, a chair for Ahrend and a chair lift for Otolift. Creative Reflection hopes to provide a modest contribution to the better grounding of the power of creativity and design thinking in particular and how a `Chaordic ' method could provide a better support. 2. Geurts, A.P.H. In pursuit of pleasant places: Dutch travellers in Europe, 1815-1914.

Degree: Faculty of Engineering Technology, 2014, University of Twente

This thesis forms a transnational history of spatial aspirations, practices, and experiences in Europe in the long nineteenth century. Modernization theorists have claimed that revolutionary shifts regarding people’s relation to place occurred in this period. This claim is examined here through a longitudinal study of egodocuments created by northern-Netherlandish travellers of Europe, comparing the 1820s, the 1860s, and the 1900s. When looking at those spatial qualities that play a central role in these texts, and in many cases also in modernization theory—homeliness, gezelligheid, cleanliness together with order and space, tactile and auditory comfort, and privacy—travellers’ hopes and expectations, their strategies aimed at fulfilling these, and the success with which they did so, in fact show strong continuities across these three decades. Those changes that did take place in people’s spatial satisfaction seem to have had a significant cultural and economic basis, rather than being grounded solely in new technologies, spatial settings, or social and political structures. Moreover, the politics of space were less divisive along gender lines than commonly thought. The same applies to assumed distinctions between ‘middle-class’ domesticity, cleanliness, noise intolerance, privateness, and other sensitivities, and an aristocratic worldliness on the one hand, and a working-class disinterest or desensitization on the other. 3. Eggink, Wouter. Regels ter ontregeling: Lessen uit de geschiedenis van het tegendraads ontwerp.

Degree: Faculty of Engineering Technology, 2011, University of Twente

This project is about research into the history of unruly design, which aims at finding theoretical background for the design of everyday things in a postmodern society. At the end of the 20th century, the focus of product design has shifted from primarily offering functionality, towards experience and emotion driven product characteristics. Within this development, the usability, or utility factor of products becomes less important, in favour of their significance, or the meaning they represent. All together it has become clear that the central idea of the functionalists, the 'Form Follows Function' cannot play its central role in the development of aesthetics anymore. Therefore unruly design is defined in this research as: all objects that are designed with the intention to undermine the existing designparadigm of the functionalists. The research presents a frame of reference, a research approach, and findings in the form of the first five design practices that have been identified as a set of 'rules of unruly design'. The conclusion in this research has two sides; a cynical one and a positive one. The cynical conclusion can be that the postmodernist experiment in itself has failed; although the central idea was "anyting goes (as long as it is not modernist)" it showed that postmodern design largely followed shared paths. In the end, unruly design followed its' own rules. The positive conclusion however is that the identification of the five rules of unruly design can support designers to understand the implementation of meaning into demand driven design practice, and therefore extends the possibilities for making meaningful objects. These five rules of practice can be considered a toolkit for the contemporary designer to make meaningful objects. Advisors/Committee Members: Drukker, J.W., Eger, Arthur O..
