1. Manson, Sable Antoinette. Interfaith on campus: examining intentional interfaith experiences and reflection.

Degree: PhD, Urban Education Policy, 2015, University of Southern California

Despite the United States being considered one of the most religiously diverse nations in the world, Americans have been found to be uninformed about religion, especially religious traditions different from their own (Jacobsen & Jacobsen, 2012; Prothero, 2007). Thankfully, institutions of higher education have been identified as key agents for combatting religious illiteracy, developing students’ ecumenical worldview, and encouraging greater interfaith engagement amongst traditional college students (i.e. millennials) (Astin, Astin, & Lindholm, 2011; Jacobsen & Jacobsen, 2012; Patel, 2012; Subbiondo, 2012). This study seeks to develop educators’ nascent understanding of interfaith in higher education by examining a co-curricular interfaith program focused on religious diversity within an undergraduate business course. This semester‐long program utilizes intentional interfaith experiences and reflective writing assignments to expose students to the potential impact of religious diversity on their personal and professional development. Students’ understanding, experiences, and level of ecumenicism were assessed through a pre and post program questionnaire as well students’ reflection assignments focused on religious diversity. Qualitative analysis was used to identify the nature of students’ growth, with particular emphasis on the development of students’ relationships, knowledge, and attitudes towards other faiths. Advisors/Committee Members: Cole, Darnell G.Harris, Susan C. (Committee Chair), Kezar, Adrianna J. (Committee Member), Miller, Donald Earl (Committee Member).
