▼ As the rise of globalisation continues to pressurise
companies to improve performance, there is a lot of hype
surrounding Six Sigma’s abilities to do so. After all, for
managerial techniques to be credible, they need to improve profit.
It is therefore concerning that to date only one empirical study
examines the role of Six Sigma on performance and it finds mixed
empirical results. This study aims to replicate the preceding study
over a more recent time period and include the impact of sector on
performance. This study examined 43 Six Sigma firms listed in the
United States and their financial results for a four year period
from 2004 to 2007, compared to 43 homogenous firms that formed a
control group. The results for five operational and five financial
measures were tested using analysis of covariance to see whether,
given equal initial levels of the measure, the Six Sigma firm would
outperform the control firm after four years. The main contribution
of this study is to show how little Six Sigma contributes to
financial and operational performance overall. Companies looking to
implement a Six Sigma initiative should be cognisant of this before
investing in high initial investment costs.

▼ The purpose of the research is to investigate the
possibility that women are committed to their professional lives
(work) and their family/social life (home), and that this
commitment to both work and home results in the proposed fifth
level of commitment; polarised commitment. People are now working
harder and longer than ever before due to globalisation, the 24
hour market place and the compression of time and space by
information and communication technology. The boundary between paid
work and personal lives is becoming more blurred (Lewis, 2003).
Work and family commitments are time greedy in nature and are
fundamentally difficult to reconcile. A questionnaire consisting
out of a demographics section, Organisational Commitment
Questionnaire (Mowday et al’s, 1979) and the Industrial Society’s
Work Life Check List (Dex and Bond, 2005) was sent out to
participants via a snowball sampling method. In order to support
the proposed fifth level of commitment; polarised commitment, a
Pearson’s correlation test was performed on the results obtained
for the Organisational Commitment Questionnaire (Mowday et al’s,
1979) and the Industrial Society’s Work Life Check List (Dex and
Bond, 2005). Even though literature supports polarised commitment,
the results were inconclusive. It is therefore recommended to
conduct further research utilising different methods to support
polarised commitment theory. Copyright

▼ The research centres on the theme that, even though
there are various drivers for a more virtual workplace, ranging
from organisational, workforce and technology to environmental
issues, it seems that progress in adopting virtual work on both
individual and organisational level, is still low. The purpose of
the research is to determine if there are specific mindsets
required to make the implementation of a virtual workplace more
successful, with the aim of making recommendations to
organisations, managers, teams and individuals for improved
implementation strategies. The research defined the target
population as a large South African Information and Communication
Technology (ICT) company, and its customers. A combination of
quantitative and qualitative methods was used. Data relating to
needs, perceptions, practicality and readiness concerning the
virtual workplace was collected on three levels, namely individual,
team and organisational level. The quantitative research covered
the objectives relating to the individual level through
questionnaires which were sent out in the form of online surveys.
The qualitative research covered the organisational level research
through individual interviews with the IT/HR managers, while the
team level research was covered through focus group interviews. The
study found that various mindsets and needs do exist, and on an
individual level the mindsets and needs are not restricted to
specific generations. This could be of significance to HR and IT
managers in general, who may need to take a wider target group into
consideration when designing policies and standards for the
organisation. Secondly the organisation itself emerged as an entity
with a mindset or culture that transcends the individuals working
for the organisation. To implement a virtual workplace would,
therefore, require an overarching strategy and organisational
change interventions to ensure that all the facets of a virtual
workplace are addressed in a balanced way.

▼ The aim of this research was to investigate the ways
in which South African organisations are embracing the potential to
improve their performance through the use of effective strategic
sourcing practices. Four specific indicators for effective
strategic sourcing were identified, around which four research
questions were formulated. This research was qualitative in nature.
An exploratory, applied research process based on experience survey
methodology was followed, using two survey instruments.
Questionnaires were issued through a professional body to all its
members, and key informant interviews were conducted with a number
of subject matter experts. Content analysis was applied to the data
collected. The results of this research support the idea that the
procurement function in South African organisations is involved in
the overall strategic planning process, is appropriately positioned
and structured for effective strategic sourcing, is attempting to
use appropriate tools and techniques where possible, and is
applying appropriate performance measurement methods. However,
improvement in a number of areas is still required if these
organisations wish to achieve the full benefits that strategic
sourcing can offer. The results of this research could be used by
procurement managers in South Africa for guidance in terms of how
to structure and manage their own functions in order to derive the
greatest possible performance improvements.

▼ South Africa has failed to develop a viable
Biotechnology industry despite strong life sciences facilities and
academic training. Government has pursued various strategies for
developing this industry since 1982 however none have succeeded.
The most recent strategy entails the establishment of four
Biotechnology Regional Innovation Centres (BRICs).Competitiveness
at a nation level is arguably best described using Porter’s Diamond
of National Competitiveness model which provides a framework for
analysing an industry cluster. The South African National
Biotechnology Strategy has been designed to stimulate cluster
formation with the BRIC at the core. In order to assess the success
of the BRIC strategy it is necessary to establish a baseline
analysis of the biotechnology sector. To do this an analysis was
performed by means of a quantitative email survey which assessed
the South African biotechnology sector in terms of the four
attributes of the Diamond model. The analysis presented here found
that the South African biotechnology industry is deficient in all
four attributes of the Diamond model. Positives do exist and can be
leveraged to attempt to address the deficiencies. The most notable
deficiencies identified were a skills shortage, poor access to
funding and a poor understanding of the fundamentals of
biotechnology. The establishment of a dedicated Biotechnology Park
was found to be of interest to stakeholders.

▼ The purpose of the study was to determine whether
business simulations helped further systems thinking in
individuals. To establish whether improved systems thinking may be
a result of participating in business simulation programs,
participants needed to be separated from their day-to-day reality
and confronted with managing their organisations in a virtual
world. The virtual world in which participants needed to immerse
themselves was a customised business simulation designed to capture
some of the critical elements of their organisation in a simplified
virtual micro-world. This new world allowed participants to engage
with and experiment with their organisations in a risk free
environment and from a holistic systems perspective. Experimental
research was conducted to determine whether it may be possible that
individuals participating in these business simulation programs
experience a shift in mental models towards systems thinking. The
feedback received from participants showed high levels of agreement
with respect to the fact that the simulation tools allowed them to
engage with the virtual model from a systems perspective.
Approximately a third of all participants reported that their most
significant insight during the simulation program was in some way
related to their new way of seeing and understanding the system of
which they are part. The study concludes with the notion that
organisations should further encourage systems thinking, which will
help them deal with the complexity of the environment in which we
operate on a day-to-day basis. Furthermore, improved systems
thinking may help us overcome some significant barriers to learning
and thereby improve our capabilities in respect to dealing with
change. Further research is needed to better qualify the specific
skill sets necessary for improved systems thinking.

▼ In South Africa’s automotive industry where product
features are very similar among vehicles, where there is huge
competition between the vehicle brands, whether they are imported
or locally produced, what is the leverage one can use to gain a
competitive advantage? What will be the means of differentiation?
The answer and the ultimate business advantage may very well be
customer service excellence. In an effort to measure service
excellence, South African customer satisfaction questionnaires,
have historically via the questions that they ask and the
weightings they give to these questions emphasised the
transactional component of customer satisfaction. South African
automotive retailers however need to understand the relationship
component of the satisfaction of customers. This research shows
that the current definition of Customer satisfaction does not
measure this relation component as defined by emotional
intelligence of the service advisors. Suggestions are given at the
end of the report as to how this situation can be changed and the
advantages that can be taken for automotive
retailers.

Copyright

▼ The research centres on the theme that, even though there
are various drivers for a more virtual workplace, ranging from
organisational, workforce and technology to environmental issues,
it seems that progress in adopting virtual work on both individual
and organisational level, is still low. The purpose of the research
is to determine if there are specific mindsets required to make the
implementation of a virtual workplace more successful, with the aim
of making recommendations to organisations, managers, teams and
individuals for improved implementation strategies. The research
defined the target population as a large South African Information
and Communication Technology (ICT) company, and its customers. A
combination of quantitative and qualitative methods was used. Data
relating to needs, perceptions, practicality and readiness
concerning the virtual workplace was collected on three levels,
namely individual, team and organisational level. The quantitative
research covered the objectives relating to the individual level
through questionnaires which were sent out in the form of online
surveys. The qualitative research covered the organisational level
research through individual interviews with the IT/HR managers,
while the team level research was covered through focus group
interviews. The study found that various mindsets and needs do
exist, and on an individual level the mindsets and needs are not
restricted to specific generations. This could be of significance
to HR and IT managers in general, who may need to take a wider
target group into consideration when designing policies and
standards for the organisation. Secondly the organisation itself
emerged as an entity with a mindset or culture that transcends the
individuals working for the organisation. To implement a virtual
workplace would, therefore, require an overarching strategy and
organisational change interventions to ensure that all the facets
of a virtual workplace are addressed in a balanced way.

▼ The aim of this research was to investigate the ways in
which South African organisations are embracing the potential to
improve their performance through the use of effective strategic
sourcing practices.

▼ South Africa has failed to develop a viable Biotechnology
industry despite strong life sciences facilities and academic
training. Government has pursued various strategies for developing
this industry since 1982 however none have succeeded. The most
recent strategy entails the establishment of four Biotechnology
Regional Innovation Centres (BRICs).Competitiveness at a nation
level is arguably best described using Porter’s Diamond of National
Competitiveness model which provides a framework for analysing an
industry cluster. The South African National Biotechnology Strategy
has been designed to stimulate cluster formation with the BRIC at
the core. In order to assess the success of the BRIC strategy it is
necessary to establish a baseline analysis of the biotechnology
sector. To do this an analysis was performed by means of a
quantitative email survey which assessed the South African
biotechnology sector in terms of the four attributes of the Diamond
model. The analysis presented here found that the South African
biotechnology industry is deficient in all four attributes of the
Diamond model. Positives do exist and can be leveraged to attempt
to address the deficiencies. The most notable deficiencies
identified were a skills shortage, poor access to funding and a
poor understanding of the fundamentals of biotechnology. The
establishment of a dedicated Biotechnology Park was found to be of
interest to stakeholders.

Suggestions are given at the
end of the report as to how this situation can be changed and the
advantages that can be taken for automotive retailers.
