1. Akhtar, Wajiha Z. Trends and Predictors of Cigarette Smoking and Its Association on Cognitive Performance among HIV Seropositive and Seronegative Men.

Degree: PhD, Epidemiology, 2015, University of Florida

Men who have sex (MSM) with men account for the largest proportion of people living with HIV (PLWH). In this current era of antiretroviral therapy use, lifestyle factors may be a greater threat than the virus to long-term survival and quality of life in MSM and others living with HIV. The prevalence of current cigarette smoking among PLWH has been estimated to be approximately 35% to 70%, more than twice the rate of the general US population. It is unclear how smoking behavior in MSM has changed in the last 25 years. Studies have shown that smoking can increase the risk of HIV-associated infections, cardiovascular disease, and immunologic dysfunction. Emerging evidence suggests that smoking may be associated with cognitive decline in older adults in the general population. Little is known on the effects of smoking on cognitive decline in PLWH. Advisors/Committee Members: COOK,ROBERT L (committee chair), MANINI,TODD M (committee member), PRICE,CATHERINE ELIZABETH (committee member), PLANKEY,MICHAEL (committee member).
