▼ Numerous studies reveal that existing nature reserves do not effectively represent ecosystem diversity and biodiversity. In this study, Alabama's public and private reserve lands were analyzed to see how representative they were of biodiversity. The spatial distribution and characteristics of Alabama's nature reserves were examined using gap analysis, a technique used to assess the distribution of nature reserves. In Alabama, a gap analysis that includes public (including Department of Defense) and private nature reserves has not been conducted. This analysis had two objectives: 1) to examine the distribution and characteristics of nature reserves across ecoregions; and 2) to analyze where gaps in the Alabama nature reserve system existed and to characterize the drivers of the identified gaps in nature reserve coverage. GIS shapefiles of reserves were collected. A database featuring the total number of reserves, reserve ecoregion, reserve size, owner type (federal, state, local, landtrust), property type (public, private), and connectivity (distance between reserves) was created. Public property was comprised the majority of all nature reserve land area. However, private parcels were the most common land parcels in the four northeasternmost ecoregions (Interior Plateau, Southwestern Appalachians, Ridge and Valley, Piedmont). The two southernmost ecoregions (Southeastern Plains, Southern Coastal Plain) were predominantly comprised of public parcels. The results indicated that reserve lands cover the Southern Coastal Plain most effectively and Southeastern Plains and Interior Plateau the least. I hypothesized that the distribution of nature reserves based on property and owner type was influenced by race, socioeconomic status, and presence of cities. This study will fill a dearth in research and help researchers, private, state, and federal agencies to make well-informed decisions to set and meet conservation goals and policy. ▼ Ambergris Caye of Belize has in the last three decades become a hotspot for tourism and attracts snorkelers, divers, sight seers, beachcombers, and vacationers from all over the world. This growth in the tourism economy of Ambergris Caye has led to an increased pressure on the mangrove ecosystems due to the direct removal of mangrove habitat and replacing it with sewage ponds and infilling for roads, housing units and hotels. Decisions on environmental policies are hard to make and are compounded when there is a lack of knowledge on the amount and distribution of resources. Knowing how the quantity and quality of mangrove forests have changed through time will help facilitate decisions about how environmental policy needs to adapt to community concerns on the sustainability of their natural resource based tourism economy. In this study, I analyzed historical Landsat TM and ETM+ imagery of Ambergris Caye to examine how mangrove forest cover has changed from 1986 to 2012. Four classes were used based on spectral similarities: mangrove, water, non-mangrove vegetation, and residential/urban/barren land. Once mangrove areas were delineated a Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was performed to assess the health of the mangrove vegetation through time. Specifically, I mapped the historical spatial distribution and health of mangrove forests, examined the land use/land cover changes to mangrove forest distribution and health and assessed the rate of change throughout the study area over a 26 year period. Ambergris Caye lost 766 ha of mangrove forests through out the study time period. In total mangrove coverage went from 8535 ha in 1986 to 7769 ha in 2012 for a total decrease of 9%. Non-mangrove forest cover also decreased from 4408 to 3917 ha, an 11.1% decline. Mean while urban/barren growth increased 264% during the 26 year study. It is also important to note that Ambergris also lost 5% of its total land area to water. Mangrove quality on Ambergris decreased during the 26 year study period. In 1986, 3898 ha of mangrove forest was considered densely growing good quality mangrove habitat. By 1990 good quality mangrove forest coverage had decreased by 3% to 3777 ha. In 1995, mangrove quality dropped by 1% to 3731 ha. From 1995 to 2000 mangrove quality dropped by 9% with 3391 ha being considered good quality. From the year 2000 on mangrove quality dropped drastically going from 3391 ha to 2177 ha in the 2003/4 image. From 2003/4 to 2010/1 the good quality mangrove held relatively steady. However by 2012 only 1663 ha of quality mangrove habitat remains a 57% decrease in overall health from 1986 to 2012. ▼ Alabama's state parks are important centers for outdoor recreation, and their trail systems are often key attractions for visitors. Therefore, enhancing the outdoor recreation experience through improved trail management can potentially increase park usage. The purpose of this study was to determine trail users' preferences and needs so that recreational managers can better use and allocate resources in the context of economic development to the state. A central research hypothesis was that level of expertise and involvement, i.e., recreational specialization, of trail users predicts trail preferences and behavior. Accordingly, a secondary hypothesis was that the employment of a designated trail ranking system in state parks, based on a standardized level of difficulty, would appeal to specialized users. Trail users' preferences and motivations to attend Alabama state parks were examined using an online survey via Qualtrics software. Over 1,000 surveys were taken by distribution of the survey link through hiking and biking organizations' listservs and Facebook pages, the homepage of Alabama State Parks, and through personal email correspondence. After analysis of survey responses, an objective of this study was to make recommendations to the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources on how to cater to experienced trail users, since such recreationists tend toward greater expenditures of time and resources than the general park user. Study results showed that experienced hikers tend to prefer an expansive trail system, and increasing the number of trails would make them more likely than the less specialized park visitor to travel greater distances to a state park. Experienced trail users seek well-mapped, multiuse trails with varying degrees of difficulty. A designated trail ranking system had no effect on drawing users to the state, as it was the least appealing feature of a park by all users. Recommendations to park managers include a more fully maintained, expansive state park trail system and well-mapped, easy to navigate trails. ▼ Natural disturbances play important roles in shaping the structure and composition of all forest ecosystems and can be used to guide silvicultural practices. Disturbance intensity is measured along a gradient ranging from highly localized, gap-scale events to stand-replacing events. High wind storms such as downbursts, derechos, and low intensity tornadoes typically fall in the center of this gradient and result in intermediate-scale disturbances, removing 30-60% of basal area. Despite their frequency and widespread occurrence, little is known about how intermediate-scale disturbances drive stand development. On 20 April 2011, the Sipsey Wilderness Area in Alabama was affected by an EF1 tornado with accompanying straight-line winds. Stands were sampled in a stratified subjective sampling design to evaluate the effects of intermediate-scale wind disturbance on the development of Quercus stands in regard to structure and recruitment. My specific objectives were to: 1) quantify damage severity in basal area reduction and percent canopy loss of this particular disturbance along a gradient of wind disturbance, 2) detect structural acceleration or retrogression of stand development caused by an intermediate-scale wind disturbance, and 3) elucidate compositional acceleration or retrogression for an intermediate-scale wind disturbance. I established 109 0.04 ha plots across a gradient of disturbance, classified as control (undamaged), light, and moderate to inventory the effect of wind damage on development and succession. Basal area was reduced from 25.5 m2 ha-1 to 24.0 m2 ha-1 and 15.5 m2 ha-1 (p < 0.001) for light and moderate damage, respectively. The percent of live and damaged trees for control, light, and moderate was 0.3%, 3.0%, and 10.7%, respectively. PAR was significantly increased within the moderately damaged areas (p < 0.001). Logistical regression showed an increasing probability of mortality during wind disturbance with increasing diameter. Based on my findings, this intermediate-scale disturbance increased intra-stand heterogeneity and accelerated succession, favoring shade-tolerant taxa established in the understory. ▼ Regeneration failure of Quercus has been widely reported throughout the Central Hardwood Forest of the eastern United States across all but the most xeric site types. Quercus seedlings are often abundant in upland hardwood stands, but typically fail to recruit to larger size classes (i.e. the Quercus bottleneck). The goal of my study was to investigate the competition with small-sized Quercus stems to elucidate what variables may cause resistance or facilitation of Quercus recruitment. I established a 2 ha plot in the Sipsey Wilderness, AL that was subdivided into 5 x 5 m quadrats to encompass the entire extent of damage caused by an EF1 tornado in 2011. The study area encompassed a range of damage (light, moderate, severe), starting from the center of the tornado tract and ending in an undamaged area (control). The canopy disturbance provided a range of light conditions in the understory (0.5–91.0% full sunlight). In each quadrat, the height of all small-sized Quercus stems (≥ 0.5 m in height to >5 cm DBH) were measured and recorded. The nearest neighbor was identified by species and measured for height and distance from the focal Quercus stem. Photosynthetically active radiation was quantified at 1.4 m above the forest floor. Quercus’ competition was largely interspecific and the majority of competitors were shade-tolerant species such as Acer saccharum and Ostrya virginiana. Competitive indices of Quercus’ primary competitors were significantly different (p < 0.01) revealing the relative competitive ability amongst species within the plot. Disturbance neighborhoods had no significant (p > 0.01) effect on the competitive ability of species. Spatial patterns of Quercus stems, their nearest neighbor, and percent full sunlight were analyzed at 5 x 5 m, 10 x 10 m, and 20 x 20 m. Analysis at a fine-scale resolution revealed spatial patterns which would otherwise not be apparent at coarser scales. ▼ Forest disturbances alter environmental conditions, influence species composition and stand structure, and affect successional and developmental pathways. Natural disturbances differ in magnitude, severity, and return interval and range from frequent, gap-scale disturbances, to infrequent stand-replacing events. Disturbances at the gap and intermediate scale increase structural complexity and intra-stand heterogeneity. On 20 April 2011 in Lawrence County, AL, an EF1 tornado tracked 5 km, leaving a patchwork mosaic of disturbed areas. To analyze the intra-stand spatial patterns of tree morality and biological legacies after an intermediate-scale wind disturbance, I established a 100 × 200 m (2 ha) rectangular plot perpendicular to the path of the storm within an affected Quercus alba stand. Based on the basal area removed by the wind event, I divided the plot into disturbance classes (minimal, light, and moderate) to compare compositional and structural attributes across areas of increasing disturbance severity. I analyzed species- and size-specific mortality trends within each disturbance class. In addition, I quantified the structural complexity of each disturbance class and described the effect of the intermediate-scale disturbance on stand development. Composition was not substantially affected by the disturbance, but large stems were disproportionately removed by the storm. Structural complexity increased as a result of the wind event. However, the spatial distribution of stems was more uniform after the disturbance. The intermediate-scale wind event altered the stand size class from a mature stand to a mature–sapling mosaic stand. This size class characterizes a stand in the mixed stage of development. Results from this thesis contribute to the understanding of the compositional and structural attributes of upland Quercus stands after an intermediate-scale wind event. Quantitative descriptions of this stand may be used as references to inform silvicultural systems intended to enhance structural complexity and minimize the disparity between natural and managed stands. ▼ Human-bear conflicts have been an important issue for wildlife officials in Great Smoky Mountains National Park since it was first established in 1934. In the Park’s early decades, biologists used capture and relocation as the primary method of management for nuisance bears. In 1990, capture and on-site release was introduced and thus provided another way for biologists to manage their individual nuisance bears. Since then, relocation and on-site release have been the two primary techniques used on nuisance bears. This project gathered the previous 26 years of nuisance bear capture data into a central database and calculated the differences in success rates between nuisance bears that were released on-site and those that were relocated. Bears were separated into two classes: animals that were captured for the first time, and animals that had been previously captured. Their histories were traced to determine if, and when, bears required later management actions. Results showed significant differences in success rates between the two management techniques. Nuisance bears released on-site following their first capture were successful 61% of the time, while bears that were relocated after their first capture were successful 87% of the time. Median time for recapture of nuisance bears that were initially released on-site and relocated was 65 and 293 days, respectively. Success rates for nuisance bears that had been previously captured and released on-site dropped for their second and third capture to 50% and 0%, respectively. Success rates of experienced nuisance bears that were relocated for their second and third capture were 87% and 67%, respectively. On their second capture, median time before recapture of nuisance bears that were released on-site and relocated dropped to 38 and 41 days, respectively. Overall, 26% (n=94) of the bears initially captured for management purposes in this thesis were recaptured for later nuisance activity. A general comparison of nuisance bear studies in Great Smoky Mountains National Park indicated that wildlife managers are now doing a better job of managing their nuisance bears than in previous decades. A project that examined the 23 years directly preceding this study’s time period found that 32% (n=108) of all bears captured and relocated for nuisance purposes a first time were recaptured for further nuisance activity. The increase in nuisance bear management success rates could be due, in part, to the introduction and implementation of on-site release as a management technique for nuisance bears.
