▼ The purpose of this study was to seek to identify and assess factors that contributed to undergraduate student acceptance, matriculation, and success in MUS 115, Music Theory, during the academic years of 2008-12. Data were (a) student ACT test scores, (b) SOM Audition Diagnostic Exam scores, and (c) final grades for students who registered in MUS 115 during the years 2008-12. Student gender, major, performing medium, home state and scholarship offer was also included in the analysis. Research questions were: (1) To what extent did student gender, major, performing medium, home state, diagnostic exam score, standardized test score and scholarship offer affect student acceptance to the University of Alabama School of Music (UA SOM)? (2) To what extent did student gender, major, performing medium, home state, diagnostic exam score, standardized test score and scholarship offer affect matriculation to the UA SOM? (3) To what extent did student gender, major, performing medium, home state, diagnostic exam score, scholarship offer, standardized test score and diagnostic exam score affect success in Theory I? (4) What was the mean diagnostic exam score of accepted students by performing medium and major? (5) What was the mean standardized test score of accepted students by performing medium and major? (6) What is the percentage of success in MUS 115, Music Theory, of matriculated students by performing medium and major? Data for this study were provided as a numeric data set with student names and other identifying information removed. The database included standardized test scores, Music Audition Diagnostic Exam scores, high-school grade point average, declared major, home state, gender, and principal instrument. Results were reported as they related to changes and trends over time. The results suggested (a) home state, performing medium, and major influenced success in Theory I, (b) diagnostic exam scores did not appear to affect acceptance, matriculation, or success in Theory I, and (c) standardized test scores influence success at the freshman level. The results gathered from this study will be helpful in better identifying students with the potential to succeed in the School of Music at the University of Alabama. ▼ Oliver Knussen is one of Great Britain's most prominent composers of our day. He has been a presence on the contemporary music scene since the age of fifteen when he was thrust upon the stage to conduct his own First Symphony. He has written in just about every genre from large orchestral works to chamber ensembles, operas to art song. His introduction into the contemporary music scene in America was during his first trip to New York City and Boston in the late 1960s to study composition at Tanglewood. He has had a longstanding relationship with Tanglewood both as a student and as the Head of Contemporary Music Activities there from 1986 to 1998. Knussen enjoys as much success as a conductor as he has as a composer. His discography boasts recordings of contemporary music of many historic figures of contemporary music with Knussen at the podium. Painstaking attention to detail is a hallmark of Knussen's scores. Dynamics, phrasing, articulation, rhythmic relationships, and, in his piano music, pedaling is all very scrupulously marked. He wants his music played the way he has conceived it. The instrumentation he uses for his orchestral works is imaginative and colorful. This same attention to individual lines and textures is evident in his compositions for solo piano. There are currently three solo piano pieces published by Faber Music Limited in London: Sonya's Lullaby, Op. 16, (1979), Variations for Piano, Op. 24, (1989) and Prayer Bell Sketch, iii Op. 29, (1998). Each of these pieces was composed in honor, by commission, or in memory of someone in his life. Sonya's Lullaby was written in celebration of the birth of his daughter, Variations for Piano was commissioned by the renowned pianist Peter Serkin and Prayer Bell Sketch is in memory of his friend and mentor Toru Takemitsu. A fourth solo piano piece has been completed, Ophelia's Last Dance, Op. 32, which was commissioned by the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival in 2010, premiered and recorded by Kirill Gerstein on Myrios Classics. Through his prolific activities as both composer and conductor, Oliver Knussen is a major contributor to the ongoing tradition of British contemporary art music and a tireless advocate of new music. ▼ Gerald Finzi has at least once been characterized as the English Hugo Wolf. To one familiar with the music of both Wolf and Finzi, such a statement understandably elicits pause and must be qualified by the context in which the characterization was made. Wolf's musical compositions are considerably more complex and broader in scope than those of Gerald Finzi. Finzi's compositional style is one unmistakably British, and shares little in common with the music of Wolf. There is, however, a shared characteristic in their compositional styles. Each of the men was highly detailed in their sensitivity to poetry and used music as a medium to accentuate their respective languages' aesthetic qualities. For Gerald Finzi, the poetry of Thomas Hardy seems to have held a strong attraction as fodder for song composition. This is evidenced in the overwhelming number of his songs with Hardy texts as their subjects. Finzi's Hardy songs constitute a significant period of English song composition in the first half of the 20th century. His careful attention to textual declamation and Hardy's shifting tone of voice result in songs that not only exemplify a style distinctively British, but also a style that bears out the deeper philosophical foundations of Hardy's poetry. His careful grouping of the ten poems of Earth and Air and Rain illustrates not only his gift for setting his native language, but also an intimate understanding of the ideology contained within Hardy's poetry. A successful performance of Earth and Air and Rain is greatly dependent upon the performer's ability to portray the ideology of Hardy as seen through Finzi's musical interpretation of his poetry. Learning to recognize the compositional devices characteristic of Finzi's idiomatic style enables the performer to accomplish this task. To that end, the following performance study seeks to compartmentalize those devices in such a way that not only facilitates a successful performance of these songs, but that also gives insight to the performance of the other Finzi settings of Hardy poetry. ▼ The process by which an art song composer writes is central in understanding his or her artistic persona. It is through the recognition of this process that we see the creative principles in each artist. For composer Lori Laitman, an emotional response to the words is the first step in her process. This response includes an awareness of the formal structure of a poem as well as attention to the natural word stress and dramatic delivery of each phrase. Therefore, the fundamental properties of her songs – melody, accompaniment and form – are determined by the text. Laitman has set the poetry of Emily Dickinson with frequency throughout her career. Therefore, in order to explore Laitman's compositional process and artistic persona this document will study two of her Dickinson settings, "Will There Really Be A `Morning'?" and "Dear March" with a particular interest in the formal organization and melodic design of the songs in relation to meter, word and phrase inflection, and overall character in the poems. Following a brief introduction, Chapter Two presents an overview of Laitman's musical education and experiences. While studying for a performance degree at Yale University, she took a course in film composition. This proved to be a pivotal experience for Laitman as she was exposed to the many facets of dramatic music, in particular, understanding mood in text and communicating that mood through music. The next chapter explores the writing style of Emily Dickinson with a focus on verse patterns and punctuation as well as the aphoristic qualities of her poetry. The purpose of this chapter is to reveal significant attributes of Emily Dickinson's writing style, which influence Laitman's musical interpretations. Chapter Four provides an examination of Laitman's musical settings, "Will There Really Be A `Morning'?" and "Dear March." The analyses will focus on melodic construction and form in relation to the structure of the poem. Finally, in order to further define Laitman's style, Chapter Five will include a comparative study of her settings with musical settings of the same poems by Aaron Copland ("Dear March") and Richard Hundley ("Will There Really Be A Morning?"). ▼ The purpose of this study is to discuss Korean nationalism as seen in Huh Cool-jae's Missa Arirang and Ahn Eak-tai's Korea Fantasy, works that are significant in Korean culture and ethnomusicology. Korean nationalism has influenced Huh's Missa Arirang and Ahn's Korea Fantasy; however, to date, there is no study with representative analysis of Korean nationalistic music trends. Nationalism, as a movement, began in Korea in the late nineteenth century, as an effort to keep Korea culturally and ethnically distinct from China and Japan after repeated invasion attempts by both neighboring countries. The movement was further strengthened when the Japanese invaded and annexed Korea in 1910 and continued throughout the 35 year Japanese rule. Korean nationalist movements continued after liberation from Japan as, following World War II and the Korean War, the country was divided, changing the focus of the movements from protecting Korea from outside invasion to attempting to reunify the nation. The Korea Fantasy is a milestone in Korean music history because it contains the official national anthem of the Republic of Korea. The Korea Fantasy itself is meaningful to Koreans because it was composed as an appeal to Korean patriotism while Korea was under Japanese domination. Performance of the first Korean national anthem, The Anthem of the Greater Korean Empire, was prohibited by the then-ruling Japanese. In the Korea Fantasy, Ahn wrote the current national anthem and incorporated it in its entirety in his Korea Fantasy. The Korea Fantasy could not be prohibited because it was composed outside of Korea and because it was presented in its entirety within a symphonic piece. Missa Arirang, a Korean mass, incorporates musical tunes and phrases from one of the most popular Korean folksongs, Arirang. Arirang is a folk song known by all Koreans throughout the world, and the folk tune melody of Kyeonggi Arirang has served as an unofficial national anthem of Korea for centuries. Missa Arirang uses the folk melodies of the Arirangs of each Korean province to manifest a longing for reunification of the Korean nation among the people, which has been present since the Korean War. ▼ The purpose of this document is to research and discuss the necessity of body alignment and awareness required to enhance a singer's vocal technique. The science supporting proper alignment and awareness provides evidence for the importance of this area of training. Research presented in this document compares several of the most popular awareness and alignment methods. These methods include yoga, Alexander Technique, the Feldenkrais Method, and Pilates. Each method's founding principles and their applications to singers is explored. All of the chosen methods have aspects that complement singers' training. However, it is difficult to draw any conclusions on the effectiveness of these methods because clinical medical research is limited. There has been an increase in public awareness of alternative body training methods and an increase in clinics geared towards the special needs of performing artists. However, there is a lack of research into body alignment and awareness methods for musicians, especially singers. An overview of medical research in body alignment and awareness is presented. This overview includes voice and posture research found in publications such as the Journal of Voice. The medical research available on these methods with non-musicians is also included to provide more information on each method's effectiveness. The researcher asked professional voice teachers to participate in a survey to ascertain if and how they use these methods in their teaching. The results of this survey confirm that teachers are aware of various methods and often use them with students and their own practice. Alexander Technique and yoga are shown to be the most popular methods. The survey includes a section of open-ended questions about using these methods in lessons. The answers reveal that many teachers use variations of the presented methods because of their limited training. This information points to a lack of availability for training in these methods for voice teachers. More access to classes or availability to work with teachers who have these specialties as well as a performing arts background would be beneficial. Further research might include cataloguing the number of teachers who have training in mind-body methods along with a vocal training background. ▼ This document is a comprehensive survey of the two hundred and twenty-three choral arrangements created in the collaboration between Alice Parker (b.1925) and Robert Shaw (1916-1999). This repertoire was written between 1950 and 1967 for seventeen RCA Victor recordings made by the Robert Shaw Chorale. Part I presents an overview of the music, title listings, and publisher information. Part II is a history of the collaboration, beginning with its genesis and the working relationship between the two. Their work occurred in the "Golden Age" of choral music in America and during the American folk music revival, both of which contributed to commercial album sales and the fame of Shaw and the Chorale. Part III describes the style of the arrangements, whose nineteen style characteristics are demonstrated in excerpts from six different songs. A detailed method developed by Dr. Parker for identifying distinguishing features of these arrangements is applied to one of the folk hymns. Over half of the Parker-Shaw arrangements are then compared in spreadsheets, found in Appendix III, with successive appendices presenting summaries of the results of the comparisons. This process reveals, among other things, the central role of melody and counterpoint in determining the nature of this music, and the arrangers' preference for working with melodies based on traditional church modes and gapped scales over those with strong tonal implications. Part IV demonstrates that the enduring quality of this repertoire can be credited principally to Shaw's comprehensive grasp of both classical and popular music, and Parker's mastery of Shaw's arranging technique. Also important were Parker and Shaw's continual desire to select folk-based music of high quality, to be faithful to the spirit of the melody and text, and to entertain the listener. The document concludes that Parker and Shaw's greatest contribution to the choral repertoire was in their arrangements of early American folk hymns. Though these folk hymns were originally not intended for choirs, the Parker-Shaw arrangements preserve the spirit of the original hymn while making full use of the resources of a four-part chorus, providing the choral world with a significant genre of excellent repertoire. ▼ Brazilian choral music has had a rich compositional tradition dating from the 16th-century, including periods of outstanding craftsmanship. At the beginning of the 20th-century, Brazilian Nationalism found expression in the Modernist movement. However, it was challenged by the expansion of a non-nationalistic aesthetic brought from Europe during the World War II. As a result, altercations between Nationalism and vanguard flourished in the 1950s. Ronaldo Miranda’s output exemplifies the eclectic mix of influences that permeates the works of the generation that followed this period of radicalization. The present document focuses on the description of three choral pieces by Miranda based on poems by Fernando Pessoa. The compositional devices used by the composer are described, as well as the relationships between the musical ideas and the poetic content. The research shows how the composer’s favor of traditional formal designs and triadic harmony is combined with new possibilities on the use of the voice and with unconventional harmonic chains. Through this study, it was possible to capture essential information for conductors to shape interpretative decisions on this repertoire. The main issues related to the pronunciation of Brazilian Portuguese are considered, and a rehearsal methodology to work with nasal vowels for singing is addressed. This treatise culminates with the presentation of the edited scores with International Phonetic Alphabet transcriptions in an appendix. The document also includes a table with words in English or Italian that have the same sounds present in Brazilian Portuguese. ▼ The term Taiwanese first came into use after World War II. In 1949, civil war (the Communist Revolution) in China forced General Chiang Kai-Shek (蔣中正, 1887-1975) to move to the island of Taiwan. Many immigrants from mainland China followed him. Some inhabitants of Taiwan, the descendants of 17th century immigration, called themselves Taiwanese to distinguish themselves from the new wave of immigrants following Chiang Kai-Shek. These new immigrants were labeled “Out-of-State” (外省人) people. Nonetheless, today, with yet another change in political climate, people call themselves Taiwanese—even those people who came to Taiwan after World War II—to differentiate themselves from the citizens of the People’s Republic of China. Currently, Taiwanese refers to people who were born in Taiwan, grew up in Taiwan, were educated in Taiwan, and hold a passport from Taiwan, the Republic of China. This complicated historical background motivated people (especially since the 1970s) to focus more on Taiwan’s varied cultural identity and inspired them to create beautiful, nationalistic art. Since 1895, both Western musical traditions and the political climate in Taiwan exerted heavy influence on Taiwanese vocal music. This recital and accompanying manuscript offer glimpses into the expression of the Taiwanese spirit through song during three distinct political periods in Taiwan’s history: the music and poetry of Teng Yu-Hsien (鄧雨賢, 1906-1944), written during the Japanese colonization and lasting from 1895-1945; the work of Lu Chuan-Sheng (呂泉生, 1916-2008) and Hsiao Tyzen (蕭泰然, 1938-2015), who composed much of their work during the period after World War II and up to 1990; and from 1990 to the present, during which many composers continue to work with Western influences and their Taiwanese heritage. Since 1949, because of the political climate, Taiwan's political status has remained controversial. Many people claim Taiwan an independent country known as the Republic of China, and it functions in this way today; others insist Taiwan is merely an island constituting part of the People’s Republic of China. ▼ As art reflects life, so too does it hold a mirror to the lives of the people who create it. The turbulent events of the first decades of the twentieth century, including two World Wars and the rise of Italian Fascism and German Nazism in the 1920s and 30s, affected millions of lives across several continents. This document explores the ways in which Luigi Dallapiccola (1904–1973) and Gian Carlo Menotti (1911–2007) voice their reactions to these events in their operas, Il Prigioniero (1948) and The Consul (1950). Italian composer Luigi Dallapiccola spent twenty months in internment during the First World War, and would be forced on several occasions to go into hiding during the Second World War. His opposition to Mussolini and the Italian Fascists, coupled with his quasi–obsession with internment and freedom, led to his composition of three works of “protest music,” of which Il Prigioniero is the second. Il Prigioniero tells the story of a prisoner of the Inquisition, his attempt at escape and eventual capture. Italian-American composer Gian Carlo Menotti emigrated to the United States in 1928, at age seventeen, and spent a great much of his time traveling and working in various countries. Having friends and family in many nations, and being of “alien” status in the United States, Menotti was very aware of the processes of immigration and the plight of refugees. The Consul is the story of a woman attempting to obtain an exit visa to escape persecution in her home country. She is met by bureaucratic “red tape” at every turn, and is unable to flee, resulting in her suicide. Although Dallapiccola and Menotti did not know each other, nor do they appear to have been familiar with each other's work, both composers drew the same conclusions about the nature of freedom due to their life experiences through shared historical events. Both Il Prigioniero and The Consul explore themes of hope, prayer, accessibility to freedom, and the culpability of both action and inaction in perpetuating oppression. ▼ This document investigates the extent to which the pathotype motive accounts for motivic, thematic, and harmonic relationships in the cello sonatas of the Armenian composer Vahram Babayan. A brief biography of the composer opens the work, followed by a discussion and examples of the pathotype motive in traditional literature. Warren Kirkendale identified the pathotype motive as consisting of "the fifth formed by first and fifth degrees, and the diminished seventh which lies a semitone outside these notes." Susan Tepping describes the pathotype motive as "a perfect fifth or fourth with each element embellished by a neighbor note" . Archetypical examples of this type of motive in traditional literature are particularly well represented in the late string quartets of Beethoven (see op. 133, The Grosse Fugue), studied assiduously by Babayan, and Handel's Messiah (And with His Stripes We are Healed). Babayan's compositional output is large and varied and demonstrates his thorough knowledge of the music of iconic Western European masters, particularly Beethoven. In addition to his technical mastery of the traditional constructional elements in Western music and the successful creation of large forms, his music is enriched on occasion by extra-musical symbols. For example, he reports that in his view intervals of the sixth are very full of energy and comparatively unstable while perfect fifths are relatively pure and consequently more stable, and that in his composition a combination of these two intervals can serve as a symbol of the crucifix with the perfect fifth as the stable vertical and the sixth as the supported less stable horizontal. This construction can be related to the pathotype motive especially in the solo cello sonatas. The main body of the paper examines the pathotype motive in Babayan's cello sonatas, using the pathotype motive and its derivatives as analytic paradigms. ▼ The purpose of this manuscript is to set into context a recital which highlights the attributes of the Heldentenor. The recital was held on 11 March 2014 and was comprised of operatic excerpts from Wagner's Die Walküre (1870), Saints-Saëns' Samson et Dalila (1877), Britten's Peter Grimes (1945), and Verdi's Otello (1887). All four of these operas have become mainstays in the repertoire of the Heldentenor. The program from the recital appears in the appendix at the end of this manuscript, and the program includes translations of the operatic excerpts and the text of spoken introductions that were read as part of the recital. Since the mid-nineteenth century, the Heldentenor voice classification has played an integral role in popular opera theater. The origin of the Heldentenor classification can be traced back to the abrupt change in the performance practice of the upper register of the tenor voice with the now famous performance of the full-throated, chest high Cs in Rossini's Guillame Tell sung by Gilbert-Louis Duprez (1806-1896) at the national opera in Paris in 1837. As the technique involving the upper register of the tenor voice changed, the vocal and dramatic demands placed on the voice type increased. By the latter half of the nineteenth century, the Heldentenor voice classification had emerged from the popular operatic compositions of Giuseppe Verdi, Richard Wagner, and several of their contemporaries. Since that time, this voice type has played a major role in opera theater. In fact, the creation of the Heldentenor marked a shift in vocal pedagogy and musical style for the tenor voice that has had wide ranging effects for generations of singers and composers. Even though the cultivation of the heavier Heldentenor often requires time, patience, and careful training, new artists possessing the rare dramatic vocal color and the ability to sing over large, powerful orchestras continued to emerge throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The purpose of this manuscript and accompanying recital is to define the Heldentenor in terms of its voice classification and dramatic musical style. A pedagogical discussion on the Heldentenor voice and an understanding of the distinctions between voice classification and the Fach system are central to this purpose. Also, the history and development of the heroic voice type are imperative in order to understand its evolution. Through commentaries, biographical material, reviews, and articles, this manuscript will explain the forces that led to the creation, establishment, and subsequent progression of one of the most specialized and rarest of voice types in the operatic repertory, the Heldentenor. Students and teachers attempting to train in this difficult voice classification must understand the history of the repertoire and persons who have achieved success singing it. For this reason, an account of the important Heldentenors who have propelled the voice type forward will also be included in the discussion. ▼ This document contributes significantly to the meager list of sources that discuss Dominick Argento’s cycle for high voice, clarinet, and piano, “To Be Sung Upon The Water.” Argento is well known for his song literature and a number of his vocal works have received much attention; the cycle From the Diary of Virginia Woolf was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1975. Through theoretical analysis of the work as well as suggestions for performance practice, this document will provide both a practical and scholarly source that will expand our understanding of the cycle and promote more well-deserved study of this lesser performed work. Patrice Michaels, who made a professional recording of the cycle with pianist Bettie Buccheri and clarinetist Larry Combs in 1996, contributed an interview. Dominick Argento’s autobiographical work, Catalogue Raisonné As Memoir: A Composer’s Life contains behind-the-scenes information about his compositions. Dr. Kevin Chance gave insightful information and was very helpful in coaching this work by helping to coordinate tempi, influencing stylistic choices, and uncovering some wonderful nuances and the tributes to other composers, sometimes in the form of musical quotations, that Argento implied in the work. Further chapters provide insight into practical difficulties, which presented many obstacles in rehearsal. For instance, no singer cues are included in the clarinet edition of the score. Also, the singer’s edition of the score includes the untransposed clarinet parts which were helpful when I rehearsed alone, but in ensemble rehearsal left fewer ways to communicate about wrong notes or entrances. This document provides a resource for future performers of this work in the form of poetical and theoretical analyses, as well as helpful stylistic information. The poetic and musical richness within this lesser performed work by Dominick Argento can be discovered with the help of the sources interviewed and performance experience.
