▼ This thesis is the result of over five years of research, in which the author has combined her theoretical work with volunteering for the first Primary Educational Institution established in Catalonia: School of “Mare
de Deu
de Montserrat”, located in the neighborhood of the same name, in Terrassa.
The aim of this thesis is to study the role of volunteerism in the school, within the framework of a “Comunidad
de Aprendizaje”, exploring the characteristics and profiles of volunteering, its responsibilities and the consequences of its work, both for the optimization of learning and for the development of social cohesion.
The chosen theme has a particular relevance, since very few studies have been directly addressed to the role and effects of volunteerism and, even less, to its importance to teaching´s support, which is particularly applied in the project mentioned in this case-study. This fact is quite evident when reviewing the pedagogical literature related to this subject.
Therefore, this type of research is necessary, considering that volunteer participation is present in over ninety schools and community centers all around Spain. Moreover, we should take into account the existence of similar educational projects, especially in the U.S, where the volunteer takes on this role.
Altogether, the twelve conclusions, reached in the research, prove the general positive effects of the volunteers participation in the dynamics of the “Comunidad
de Aprendizaje” and, most of all, show the feasibility of their assistance in schools and centers, including the different profiles of volunteers that the researcher describes, from those integrated by the families themselves to those who originate from the community. In addition to that, the researcher emphasizes the contribution of volunteers from different cultures and social groups.

▼ The skills of the well-known competent pivots are identified within the present survey on the ASOBAL league during the 2006-07 seasons. A pivot is defined as the player whose skills are developed in the phase of attack, therefore, due to his position; he is decisive for the intervention and conditioning of his partners' actions (Román, 993).
The research analyzes the figure of the pivot from the perspective of a competent sportsperson, gathering the characteristic abilities and the analysis of the playing actions in the high competition. The pivot’s skills are presented from the developmental functional structure of the game. From this approach, they are classified and the dimensions are defined for the observation of the player’s activity.
In the handball competition, situations in the match are not identical to the ones in training and therefore, the sportsperson has to select the closest alternative among all those they know. Just a few times, they carry out real new skills they do not support, at least partially, from previous learning (Riera, 1997). To get to know these abilities, two data collection techniques are used: the interview to current skilled coaches and the observation of the pivots' competition.
From the matches' analysis, it is emphasized that the pivots solve playing situations through a reduced number of concatenation of skills. The activity of the pivot is constituted from the combination of seven basic skills: earning the position, blocking, feinting, launching, disassociating, holding the odd in number opponent back and keeping up in distance from the action taking place. Among those mentioned before, skills which use the body and involve taking some advantage on the adversary stand out. Furthermore, skills of the pivot are articulated through four basic intentions: controlling the game, demanding the ball, finishing and to help.

▼ This study analyses the phenomenon of gender violence within universities. The research is divided in two main dimensions: 1) gender violence at universities: women students, professors and staff; and 2) strategies and practices which contribute to preventing and overcoming the problem on campus.
In the first section, the present thesis describes the methodological and theoretical aspects of gender violence at universities and specific strategies of combatting the problem (Chapter 1 and 2). The second section presents the empirical findings provided by the case studies carried out at 6 universities of the United Kingdom and Mexico throughout 2010. Chapter 3 focuses on the UK context and 5 universities where equity policies have been developped. Finally, Chapter 4 explores gender violence at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the strategies that are being implemented in this country in order to promote equality on campus.

▼ This thesis’ core theme is the rurality reinvention discourse. The starting point is the assumption that the valuation of rurality and its reinvention potential is being discursively disseminated (facing a supposedly generalized demographic and functional crisis in rural territories, very centralized in political and social discourses as well as in the media). This valuation of rurality is being institutionalized in several layers of society. Our intention is to meet the rurality project emerging from this context.
We handled the discourse in three fundamental dimensions, that is, its political and technical feature (more precisely in the scope of rural development policies), its cultural root (the range of bucolic representations which build the so-called Countryside Ideal) and finally, its commercial feature (the promotion of rural products and of the rural as a product).
This development perspective is based on the valuing of natural and cultural patrimony and is legitimated by the axiological binomial which sustains the discourse of rurality reinvention. The arguments and the values behind the discourse reinforce its power and social acceptance at the same time they hasten the big missions of the rural world – preserve the past and grant the future.
Because it makes sense as an alternative to a model of prosperous city, dominant, but very discursively demonized; because it responds to urban recreation and consumption expectations and their idyllic representations of rurality; because it encourages business and urban market growth; because it results from territorial requalification strategies very close to the ones used in historical city centres, among other reasons, it makes sense to think of this discourse/project as having an urban origin.
That being so, it was important to go deep into to the city (as an empirical object) in order to grasp the discourse’s materializations. We have chosen to study spaces of idyllic rurality thematization in order to understand the outlines of the reinvention project imposed to rural territories. That is, getting to know the desired landscapes (and thus the expectations floating over the real landscapes), from their scenographic materialization, in thematic places for urban fruition

▼ Ethical conflict is a problem that occurs when you perceive that the values and ethical principles assumed by oneself are compromised by others, isn't able to make ethical decisions. Nursing professionals are particularly vulnerable to experiencing ethical conflicts, mainly due to the responsibilities associated with caring for people and the fact that they work in an increasingly technological and complex field, as health care is today. Conflict situations are associated with establishing relationships with patients and their families, with the healthcare team and the institution, and certain treatments and clinical procedures. Although ethical issues are inherent in the nursing profession, some clinical settings appear to be particularly sensitive to this phenomenon, such as nursing in intensive care units (ICUs). Often, research has focused on the analysis of ethical discomfort or moral distress experienced by professionals, without considering other types of conflict identified in the literature on the subject. In this sense, the exploration of the phenomenon of ethical conflict should consider all the variables involved in the genesis of the conflict. Based on this need, with the idea of exploring the phenomenon in nursing, the objectives of this research were to validate a theoretical model for analyzing ethical conflict, develop an instrument to explore the ethical conflicts in nurses that work in ICUs, and analyze the relationship between ethical conflict and variables in socio-demographic as well as professional and clinical settings, to explore the phenomenon and to design strategies to prevent and treat it. Along this theoretical model we developed the Conflict Ethics Questionnaire for Nurses (CEQN) and administered it to a sample of 203 nurses working in the ICU of two tertiary hospitals in the province
Barcelona, from October to December 2009.
Subsequently, we made statistical analysis (descriptive, metrical and bivariate). The results showed that the theoretical model proposed for the analysis of ethical conflict is revealed as a valid model, showing that the types of ethical conflict followed a structure organized according to levels of low to high degree of exposure to conflict. It was also noted that moral outrage and anguish were the types of ethical conflicts experienced more often by nurses of the ICUs. Moreover, the CEQN proved a reliable to measure (a =.882) of the phenomenon.
It was also noted that practitioners in the ICUs had moderate levels of exposure to 3 conflict and that the two care situations that generated a high degree o[ethical conflict were the[act to check the patient suffered and manage treatments associated with the withholding and withdrawal life-sustaining treatments.
Among other noteworthy results, it was observed that there was a significant negative relationship ~between the degree of exposure to ethical conflict and the professional perception of being in an environment, or addressing ethical issues (F =7.7101 p =.001; E2 =.227) and the act of participating…

▼ This thesis is presented as a compilation of articles that deal with the themes values and applied ethics in social education. The sense of applied ethics in the world of professions is hereby studied in depth and so is the convenience of studying the reasons that create a need to talk about applied ethics in social education. Next, we present an analysis of the steps that this profession has taken in the construction of an orientation system for the treatment of moral issues arisen out of the professional practice, connected to the process of self-identity construction and to the elements that show difficulties to the development of this ethics-based system. Finally, several options based on the hermeneutic critics are hereby proposed in order to foster this ethics-based system.

The antagonistic effects of these metabolites are regulated by enzymes that interconvert Cer, So, and S1P. In this work two of these enzymes were studied: sphingosine phosphate lyase and acid ceramidase. First several methods to determine the activity of these enzymes were developed and optimized, resulting in the publication of sensitive fluorogenic and chromatographic methods for enzyme activity.
Particularly the assay optimized for acid ceramidase activity was used in the finding and identification of new inhibitors in several compound libraries. As a result compounds RBM2-1B, RBM2-1D and RBM2-1E were identified as acid ceramidase and dihydroceramide desaturase inhibitors. Furthermore compounds RBM1-12, RBM1-13 and SABRAC were also described as acid ceramidase inhibitors. Since several publications described the upregulation of acid ceramidase in advanced prostate cancer, we decided to investigate the particular effect of the acid ceramidase inhibition in a cellular model of advanced prostate cancer. Using cells PC-3/Mc we inhibited acid ceramidase through two different approaches: first silencing the gen ASAH1 and comparing the effects with chemical inhibition of the enzyme using compounds RBM1-12, RBM1-13 and SABRAC.
We evaluate the effect of acid ceramidase inhibition in cell growth, invasivity and 3D growth in vitro, finding a diminished growth and 3D growth in both cells those knockdown for ASAH1 and treated with inhibitors. Finally, the effect of ASAH1 silencing in in vivo tumor growth and lung colonization was also determined. To this end male NOD-SCID mice were used for xenotransplants with cells PC-3/Mc_ASAH1_KD or control and the tumor growth or lung colonization was followed by luminometry. We found that the silencing of ASAH1 in PC-3/Mc cells delayed the growth and also the lung colonization, highlighting the potential of acid ceramidase inhibition as adjuvant in the treatment of prostate cancer and also in the prevention of metastases formation.

▼ This thesis examines the language of interaction and the way it is deployed among a group of children aged 3-4 in an early childhood center located in
Barcelona. More specifically, the first part of the analysis is focused on tutored linguistic behavior, based on interactions organized as a class activity and directly supervised by teachers. Secondly, children’s language interactions are observed in intra-group and extra-group conversations in semi-spontaneous situations. Finally, it is revealed how, under these same circumstances, children negotiate the code of interaction in peer to peer dialogues. An important part of the analysis is related to social networks, a variable which is highly useful to explain sociolinguistic behavior as has been demonstrated in a large number of studies.
In addition to the chapter devoted to data analysis, the thesis is organized in five other sections. The first one has to do with the theoretical perspectives of language choices. Two main traditions are described at this point: the macro-social and the micro-interactional. Why these traditions cannot convey holistic understanding about language choices is discussed. Thus, this research is based on social networks as the theoretical construct capable of building bridges between sociopolitical factors related to language maintenance or shift and the reasons for a specific language choice in local interactions.
The second chapter deals with the sociopolitical struggle to reintroduce Catalan in schools from the late 1960’s since the beginning of the XXIst century. Furthermore, several studies are examined to shed light on Catalan students’ levels of knowledge and use of Catalan and Spanish.
The third and fourth chapters are dedicated to exploring language acquisition in children aged 3-4, and to describing methodology respectively. Regarding the latter, participant observation is justified as the most suitable technique to achieve quality data. An explanation is made as to how the researcher gained access to informants, as well as the process of data transcription.
In the last chapter the main conclusions of the research are shown.

de l’estructura argumental i la semàntica estructural. Alhora advoco per una teoria
de la interfície sintaxi-morfologia per defecte isomòrfica; la possible manca d’isomorfisme,
de la qual depèn la variació interlingüística, es deu a l’existència
de certes operacions morfofonològiques provocades per propietats dels morfemes funcionals. Aplico aquesta teoria a dades fonamentalment del llatí arcaic i clàssic, concentrantment en la divisió tipològica proposada per Talmy entre llengües d’emmarcament en el satèl•lit i llengües d’emmarcament verbal: en les primeres l’element que expressa un canvi d’estat o lloc és típicament no verbal mentre que en les segones és sempre un verb. Demostro, a través
de l’anàlisi
de diferents construccions, que el llatí pertany al primer grup, però també que tant aquesta llengua com l’eslau es distintingeixen
de les altres llengües d’aquest tipus pel fet que no admeten construccions resultatives complexes basades en SAs. Relaciono aquest fet amb un altre: que aquestes llengües tampoc no admeten resultatives basades en SPs si el verb no està prefixat. Concloc que en aquestes llengües, que anomeno llengües d’emmarcament en el satèl•lit febles, hi ha un requeriment morfològic pel qual l’element que expressa el resultat

▼ The main aim of the thesis is to give a semantic account of implicit content – the kind of content that plays a crucial role in implicit communication. Implicit communication is a species of communication in which a speaker communicates certain contents that go over and above the contents retrievable from the linguistic meaning of the words used. The focus of the thesis is a certain kind of implicit communication involving locations (when sentences such as “It is raining” are used to communicate that it is raining at a certain location) and judges (when sentences such as “Avocado is tasty” are used to communicate that avocado is tasty for a certain person, called “the judge”). The way the topic of implicit content is approached is via the notion, widespread in contemporary philosophy of language, of “unarticulated constituents”. The thesis contains an investigation of this notion, with the specific aim of disentangling the many senses it has been used and of providing a general definition of the notion. A direct product of this investigation is a partitioning of the logical space; three positions are then selected, which correspond to the main contenders in the current debate involving unarticulated constituents: truth-conditional semantics, truth-conditional pragmatics and relativism. The biggest part of the thesis is dedicated to investigating certain arguments that have surfaced in the debate between these positions, with the ultimate goal of proposing a relativist account of implicit content. The particular version of relativism offered consists in the combination of the claim that locations and judges are part of the circumstances of evaluation, rather than the content of utterances, with “the variadic functions approach” to certain natural language expressions. Also, several arguments against a truth-conditional semantic approach to predicates of personal taste are provided.

▼ This PhD thesis identifies and analyses the Christian edifices of late antiquity in the province of Tarraconensis. The appearance of Christian buildings in this area during antiquity is neither a linear nor a uniform process, but instead develops according to a wide diversity of forms and circumstances. The study of this phenomenon is key to understanding early Christianity on the Iberian peninsula, as the transformations affecting both the countryside and the old Hispanic urban centres from the Peace of the Church onwards are varied and rich in both forms and nuances: the christianisation of settlements, the building of episcopal communities, newly built churches both inside and outside the city walls, the celebration of former places of private worship (domus ecclesiae), the christianisation of pagan temples with or without building alterations, the conversion of public facilities such as, for example, baths or civil basilicas, the construction of religious buildings on symbolic sites, like those within the arenas of amphitheatres, and so on and so forth.
The truth is that the few surviving remains of Christian buildings of late antiquity in Tarraconensis are clearly only a very small part of the Christian edifices and churches that almost certainly existed before the Muslims arrived in the Iberian peninsula. Accordingly, this thesis has enlarged this catalogue by pursuing two main lines of action: 1) A thorough trawl through written sources contemporary to the first four centuries of Christianity, and 2) an analysis and dissection of a number of Roman archaeological sites and medieval churches, which despite the absence of direct information regarding the purpose of this study allow identifying new aspects of Christian edifices of late antiquity based on the observation of a series of significant common features (presence of necropolis, liturgical elements, Christian inscriptions, saints’ names, dedications, etc.).
Based on a prior pool of fewer than twenty known edifices or sites, this study has managed to extend the catalogue to include as many as 252 examples, of which 87 have been rated as definite, 81 as very probable, 35 as probable and 49 as possible. Using the annotated and critical inventory that has been compiled, a series of significant common features can be observed and a number of conclusions are reached that would not have been possible to foresee beforehand

▼ This thesis investigates the development of the education system in Spain between 1834 and 1931. The advancement of the power of the liberal sectors in 1834 signified the end of the old regime and opened the way for the construction of a political liberal system based on a parliamentary monarchy.
Proponents of the theoretical concept of the European political liberalism, Spanish governments drove forward the expansion of a universal education system. The objective of these measures, on a theoretical level, was to provide the whole population with the basic knowledge needed to succeed in transforming the subjects of the old regime into free citizen.
The state was the responsible conceptionalizer for a whole century - of an education system which was based on primary education, the only education system which was obligatory and universal. The problem of the Spanish project was the inhibition of the state to execute primary education practically, as it was left to municipal authorities, which had to take care of the financing (construction of schools, dotations of materials, payment of teachers...) with its own resources.
The shortage of economic resources of many Spanish municipal authorities, the majority in the agricultural sector, resulted in the failure of the primary education system. Evidence of this development is the slowly growth of the illiteracy rate during this period as well the chronic problems which affected the primary education system. (a lack of school centers, the very bad conditions of the exiting schools, delayed payments of salaries...)
From school legislation passed during the whole period, this thesis analyses the problems and conflicts which brought along the practical application in the rural areas in the south of Catalonia, in the district of Gandesa. A territory with small population density, an economy exclusively based on the agrarian sector and isolated from the big urban and industrial centers.

▼ <I>This research is focused in a widespread Romanic decoration known as chessboard pattern, which consists of an alternation of little cubes of stone sculpted in high relief and located in different places of the temple, such us capitals, eaves, frames or archivolts. Previous research has underestimated the potential of this decoration, including all the different types under the generic term of chessboard. One of the main purposes of this thesis is to review this classification and to offer a new typological proposal distinguishing up to nine different patterns. Furthermore, I have also explored the relationship between the ancient models in which the chessboard decoration was present and the mediaeval ones, trying to understand if it was a continuous process or, by contrast, there was a recuperation of the former models. I have produced a large database with more than 550 churches that contain the chessboard decoration. Data recompilation has been collected from field work campaigns, specific literature and web resources. Data of each temple have been classified according to the importance of the church, the recurrence of the decoration, the type of decoration and the age of construction (range of 50 years). All this data has been processed with a geographical Information System (GIS) and synthesized in maps. These maps include hundreds of Romanic churches in Spain, Portugal, France and Italy and permit to highlight the influence of some of the most prominent temples thorough the Camino
de Santiago (San Pedro
de Jaca, Saint-Sernin
de Toulouse and Sainte-Foy
de Conques) in the diffusion of this decoration. My PhD research constitutes a new multidisciplinary and methodological approach in the History of Art that could be applied to other Romanic decoration such as the palmette or the saw tooth pattern and other pictorial and sculptural themes. </I>

▼ RIASSUNTO DELLA TESI: Il mosaico è una forma di rappresentazione artistica meno conosciuta dal pubblico rispetto ad altri mezzi maggiormente fruibili e di comprensione più immediata. La conoscenza di questo settore, oltre ad essere circoscritta ad un pubblico specifico come quello accademico, è quasi sempre incentrata sulla produzione antica o medioevale e ne trascura l'evoluzione nelle epoche successive. Tali premesse sono risultate interessanti nel presente studio per analizzare un periodo storico dell'arte del mosaico in gran parte sconosciuto, quello relativo alla sua rinascita e al suo sviluppo in età moderna e contemporanea, promuovendone l'interesse presso un pubblico più vasto. Alla fine del Medioevo l'arte musiva, così fiorente in epoche precedenti in tutto il territorio europeo cadde completamente in disuso, ad eccezione dell'Italia dove la tradizione non fu mai completamente interrotta. Ma l'arte musiva non era destinata a cadere nell'oblio, fu infatti nuovamente in Italia che avvenne una svolta destinata a creare le circostanze che determinarono la rinascita verso la fine del XVI secolo di questo antico settore artistico. In questo processo furono determinanti alcuni fattori, come il nuovo interesse per la lavorazione delle pietre pregiate che dette origine all'Opificio delle Pietre Dure di Firenze e la nuova attenzione del pensiero rinascimentale al recupero delle memorie antiche attraverso il duraturo mezzo artistico del mosaico. Tali ragioni determinarono la fondazione dello Studio del Mosaico Vaticano assieme all'obbiettivo di rivestire la basilica di San Pietro con mosaici che reinterpretassero lo spirito del primo cristianesimo. Sul modello vaticano e fiorentino si formarono scuole musive strutturate in vere e proprie industrie, i cui prodotti riscossero grande suceso diffondendosi ampiamente nelle corti d'Europa e suscitando il Desiderio in alcune di esse di creare una produzione locale ispirata a tali scuole. Un ulteriore sviluppo del settore musivo in Europa fu determinato da altri fattori verificatisi nel XIX secolo e legati a circostanze storiche ed ideologiche della società romantica ed industriale. In tale contesto, una politica mirata alla rivalutazione degli ideali artistici e religiosi del Medioevo si univa in ciascuna nazione all'incremento industriale delle arti applicate e alla riscoperta di antiche tecniche artistiche cadute in disuso, come l'arte musiva. La maturazione di questo processo di rinascita si determinò alla fine del XIX secolo, con lo sviluppo di presupposti storici, artistici ed ideologici nei quali le istanze dell'Art Nouveau - attenta al valore dell'elemento ornamentale e al recupero delle tradizioni artigiane e della qualità del lavoro umano - si univano al recupero romantico dell'identità dei vari Paesi. ▼ The "Master of the tympanum of the Cabestany" denomination has been conceived with the concrete methodological purpose of identifying the characteristics which define the tympanum of Santa Maria of Cabestany, in order to establish the guidelines sine qua non to revise the works attributed to the corpus of the Master of Cabestany since 1944. The title of this thesis Presence and context of the Master of the tympanum of Cabestany summarize the two main objectives that have been established from the very beginning of the research: the presence, that is to say the location, of the works that are attributed to the same tympanum of Santa Maria of Cabestany's authorship, and the context of the author/workshop, so that, the origins, the apprenticeship and the trajectory of this sculpture workshop. The conclusions of this research support that the Master of the tympanum of Cabestany was constituted, approximately by the period between the years 1160 and 1200, as a sculpture workshop specialized in the composition of narrative programs, and formed in a very specific Kunstwollen, the one that had effect during the second half of 12th century within the Santa Maria of Pisa construction, as it reflects in a concrete way the sculpture of Master Guilielmus and the realization of this cathedral's first pulpit. In addition, it should be outlined the greatest influence of some particular Christian Roman sarcophagi in the configuration of a very peculiar technique that is detected in the folds of the Master of the tympanum of Cabestany figure's dresses. And the same technique has been detected in some of the Master Guilielmus' figures, and also in the works of some workshops linked to his mastery. These sarcophagi are located, nowadays, in the collections of the Musée
de l'Arles et
de la Provence Antiques. This ascertainment, together with other composition and disposition particularities, signals that the Provence and the city of Arles took, direct or indirectly, an outstanding significance to the Master of the tympanum of Cabestany's formation. Likewise it can be observed in the hypothetical Sant Pere
de Rodes Galilea doorway reconstruction presented in this thesis.

▼ This doctoral thesis is about the epistemological and ontological problematic of contemporary ethnography exercise, particularly focused on the analysis of processes of subjectification. The first part refers to experience of estrangement, its transversality between thought and knowledge. The second focuses on the modern and contemporary ethnographer´s toolbox, in mixtures of explicative, comprehensive and interpretative operations, historically came from the currents and models of humanities and social sciences, conjugate from an eclectic perspective. Thirdly, ethnography is characterized like a cartography, where operate different conceptions of truth, and is analyzed the scientific, philosophic and artistic components. The fourth part contains chapters on epistemological horizons and lines of flight of this gnoseological formulation. The step from the products to the processes, and revision of contemporary experimental context, give way to the description of three directions of development: ethnography of communication, science and technology, and from the called world anthropologies. Finally, conclusions seek to highlight the role of ethnography on the general displacement of the philosophic and scientific traditions from the being to doing, from the subject to the subjectivity.

▼ <i>THESIS ABSTRACT: "Intergenerational conflict: an analysis of judgments, attitudes and feelings between parent and child in the interpretation of narratives". TEXT: The thesis mentioned first on the historical and theoretical aspects of adolescence. And then on the analysis and statistical and qualitative reflection of three investigations, which we used a total sample of 216 subjects which belong to a middle class. The first study that makes reference to "the narrative of conflict" was conducted with subjects of 6-15 years (with the sample of 100 subjects, 50 boys and 50 girls), with whom he formed five groups according to age, and was comprising 10 subjects of each sex. They tell us verbally or in writing their experiences about a conflict with their parents and answer a series of questions such as: who is right in the conflict, as parents and children felt like it was all over ... The arguments were categorized on Conflicts relating to: issues, who are right, resolution and feelings. The results indicated that the variable age influences the determination of the issues that most young people feel that parents are the ones who are right, while the older comment on the complexity of reality. Finally, note that parents influence the solutions and the negative feelings is not common in conflicts. The second study refers to "analysis and reflection on an act of injustice" was used a sample of 106 subjects in 4th of ESO 54 boys and 54 girls, the task was to answer a series of questions about a story they have previously read . ▼ <i>The effects of PPARβ/δ subtype and its role in the metabolic syndrome and the inflammatory diseases has been elucidated in the last years, in part, by the availability of PPARβ/δ agonist GW501516, althought the mechanism involved is still unkonwn. In this study we examined the effects of PPARβ/δ activator GW501516 on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced hypertriglyceridemia. Our results showed that the hipertrigliceridemia caused by the HFD was reduced by the drug treatment. Also the PPARβ/δ activation prevented the reduction in the AMPK-Lipin1-PGC-1α pathway caused by the HFD, leading to an increase in hepatic fatty acid oxidation. This effect, together with increased hepatic expression in VLDL-receptor might be responsible for the hypotriglyceridemic effect of GW501516. Moreover, the PPARβ/δ activation by GW501516 also prevented TNF-α-induced NF-κB activation in human HaCaT cells by reducing p65 acetylation through AMPK and SIRT1.</i>

de una segunda lengua, este estudio analiza la motivación entre estudiantes palestinos (12-18 años). Si tenemos en consideración la situación actual en Palestina, los motivos que llevan a los estudiantes a estudiar una lengua extranjera seguro que se ven afectados por el contexto (cultura y valores)
de aprendizaje. El estudio se centra en la investigación
de la motivación hacia el inglés como lengua extranjera en cuatro distritos del West Bank. La primera pregunta
de investigación
de esta tesis doctoral se centra en el estudio
de los componentes
de la motivación en estudiantes palestinos
de inglés en el contexto
de Palestina. En la segunda pregunta
de investigación se analizan cómo estos componentes se relacionan entre sí y con un componente lingüístico. En la tercera pregunta
de investigación se estudia el efecto
de seis variables individuales y
de contexto en los componentes motivacionales identificados. En la recogida
de datos se utilizó un cuestionario estructurado para medir las actitudes y orientaciones del estudiante
de inglés, complementado con una serie
de preguntas semiestructuradas, las cuales proporcionan datos cualitativos. El cuestionario se adaptó
de Cid, Grañena y Tragant (2002), desarrolado en el contexto
de Cataluña, con algunas modificaciones basadas en un estudio piloto (Musleh, 2006), realizado en Palestina. En primer lugar, se sealizó un análisis factorial exploratorio para examinar la distribución
de los ítems en factores. Los resultados mostraron cuatro constructos en el contexto
de aprendizaje del inglés en las escuelas palestinas, dos factores actitudinales (Motivación y placer y Consciencia
de necesidad) y dos motivos para el aprendizaje del inglés (Orientación instrumental y Orientación interactiva). En segundo lugar, se realizó un análisis factorial confirmatoria para reafirmar los factores identificados y desarrollar un modelo estructural basado en los modelos especificados en Tragant, Victori, y Thompson (2009) y Csizer y Dörnyei (2005). Finalmente se especificó un modelo y se obtuvieron medidas adecuadas en el análisis
de ecuación estructural realizado. El modelo muestra relaciones positivas entre la orientación instrumental y la interactiva, la orientación instrumental y motivación y placer, y motivación y placer y el componente lingüístico. Posteriormente al análisis

▼ <i>This research is a continuation of a series of sociolinguistic and anthropological work on migration conducted in Spain and the integration of immigrants into Spanish society. The Moroccan community is taken as the basis of this research due to the numerical and cultural significance (Arab Muslims), as well as my knowledge of that culture. This research will focus on linguistic and cultural integration of immigrants belonging to the second generation of that group in
Barcelona. The working hypothesis assumes that the population of foreign origin, in this case of Moroccan origin, is a population that migrates in search of better social and economic conditions, and presents a great willingness to integrate into the new society, particularly in the language. A corpus from some ethnographic interviews was prepared, of more than 60 questions that were recorded. These interviews were semistructured. It was used an open questions system to guide the issues, sort the contents and to avoid restrictions on the responses of the interviewees, allowing them to introduce other topics. These unexpected answers raised new issues that were not foreseen. In regard to the language, it was addressed the difficulties that immigrants can be found in their daily lives and in school. Furthermore, it was studied the attitudes, skills and language use of young Moroccans in the family and outside the house. So, most of the immigrants surveyed were in different schools in
Barcelona, in order to study the degree of incorporation into the Spanish education and the impediments posed by the knowledge or ignorance of the Spanish and Catalan languages in their educational process. They also underline the concern about the studies and what they think they mean in terms of improvements in their working lives. </I>

▼ <i>This dissertation addresses two interrelated problems in the analysis of grammatical structures in interaction: (i) the theoretical and methodological challenge of integrating features that belong to different linguistic levels (intonation, morphosyntax and meaning-function) in the analysis of structures and ( ii) the recognition of structures and categories neglected in descriptive grammars. In the first part, adopting a theoretical point of view, I discuss the adequacy of a constructional approach to grammar in order to analyze the grammatical constructions in interaction. To achieve this, I critically review different versions of Construction Grammar, and I propose a new version: Interactional Construction Grammar. Interactional Construction Grammar is a construction-based approach to grammar that incorporates interactional information (units conversational interactional activities, participants in interaction, among other features). In the second part, the model is applied to an often overlooked phenomenon in Spanish: the use of subordination marks in independent structures. First, I systemize information available about these structures in Spanish literature. Secondly, I relate it to other proposals available in general linguistics. Finally, I propose a corpus-based analysis that applies the model proposed in the first part. Interactional Construction Grammar allows a coherent and comprehensive analysis of the form and meaning of insubordinated structures. At the same time, the model allows the analyst to place these structures in Spanish grammar as a whole and describes its meaning in terms of interactional activities. </I>

▼ <i>The present doctoral thesis entitled "Magnitude of effect estimation in single-case designs" is a compendium of four published articles. It deals with exploring the performance of analytical techniques for N=1 data generated using Monte Carlo methods. The first study compares techniques with different fundaments (standardized mean difference, regression analysis, and visual analysis), the former performing less satisfactorily in terms of affection by autocorrelation and effect detection. The second study centres on one of better performers, PND, and two recent proposals intended to improve its performance. None of the three techniques outperforms the remaining ones according to all criteria: PEM is less affected by autocorrelation in absence of effect, PAND is less affected by trend, and PND is more sensitive to treatment effects and yields lower estimates in absence of effect (i.e., filtering ineffective treatments whose application would lead to unjustified costs). In the third study, a data correction step is designed in order to remove baseline phase trend form the whole data series prior to applying PND. This step proves to be effective, since trend's effect is eliminated, whereas autocorrelations' effect is attenuated. The fourth study arises from the need to elaborate a procedure for quantifying behavioural change, estimating separately slope change and level change, after removing baseline trend. The results suggest that the procedure is unbiased for all experimental conditions tested. The estimation is more efficient (i.e., the variability of the estimators is lower) for positive autocorrelation and for progressive effects. The choice and the recommendation of a procedure to be applied have to be based on the data features such as the presence of autocorrelation (hardly detectable by statistical techniques in short data series), the presence of general trend and the type of intervention effect (identified by visual inspection). Since visual analysis is the most frequently used technique by psychologists for single-case data analysis, any quantitative technique needs to be compatible with it. Both types of procedures ought to be conceptualized as tools aiding the professionals' judgment on treatment effectiveness, as his/her knowledge on the client, the setting, and the relevant changes in the behaviour are indispensable. </i>

▼ <i>DOCTORAL THESIS ABSTRACT: "Decisive Physical Abilities of the Firemen Employed by the Autonomous Community Government of Catalonia" TEXT: Firefighting is widely-acknowledged as being one of the most highly physically demanding civilian occupations. (Bahrke, 1982; Brownlie et al., 1985; Davis, Dotson, and Santa Maria, 1982; Gledhill and Jamnik, 1992a). An unusually high, significant incidence of job-related injuries and premature deaths has led firefighting to be considered a high-risk occupation (Bahrke, 1982; Baris et al., 2001; Barnard, Gardner and Diaco, 1976; Cady, Bischoff, O'Connell, Thomas and Allan, 1979; Cady, Thomas and Kawasky, 1985; Demers, Heyer and Rosenstock, 1992; IAFF, 1979; Ma, et al., 2005), firefighters' wages thus even including hazard pay. Strains, forced positions and fatigue are the three leading causes of risks of accidents among this group (Sanz,2006), but when programs have been started up for enhancing physical fitness and preventing injuries, the incidence of occupational accidents has dropped, whilst performance in simulated situations has improved (Adams, et al. 1986; Cady et al., 1985; Cohen, 1998; Czwalia, Sykes, n.d.; Fowler, 1989; Mealey, 1979; Paffenbarger, 1988; Peterson, Dodd, Alvar, Rhea and Favre, 2008; Puterbaugh and Lawer, 1983). For the purpose of ascertaining the physical requirements for the fire-fighters employed by the Autonomous Community Government of Catalonia, as well as the decisive variables which have a bearing on their performance, the Fire Prevention, Firefighting and Rescue Service and the High-Performance Sports Centre of Sant Cugat del Vallés promoted a series of research studies based on physical-technical tests. This research revealed both the physical capabilities involved in working as a Fireman for the Autonomous Community Government of Catalonia, as well as the metabolic demand, being overweight standing out as one of the variables having the greatest effect on their performance. Fire-fighters' health and safety and that of the population per se thus depending on the ability to successfully deal with each one of the situations confronting them, it is essential that fire-fighters' physical abilities be well-suited to meeting the real-life demands of their jobs. de las competencias ciudadanas" tuvo por objetivo central diseñar, aplicar y evaluar una propuesta metodológica
de formación ciudadana basada en el uso
de tecnologías
de la información y la comunicación a través
de una visión actualizada
de la alfabetización digital y en el contexto del currículum escolar. Desde mis comienzos en la Universidad
de Barcelona la discusión sobre alfabetización digital fue un tema permanente, cuyas largas discusiones, iban dirigidas a entender este tipo
de alfabetización, ya no como el aprendizaje
de software y hardware, sino, como el desarrollo
de las capacidades para el tratamiento y transformación
de información. Paralelo al caso chileno, lugar
de experimentación y extracción
de los datos, iban surgiendo en Europa y Norteamérica la discusión e instalación
de las competencias básicas o las llamadas competencias del siglo XXI.
De esta manera iban emergiendo en forma importante las competencias vinculadas al manejo
de las tic y la necesidad
de la formación ciudadana para los alumnos, por cuanto, son éstos los que deben hacerse cargo
de esta nueva sociedad. El aprendizaje del manejo
de las tics por parte
de estos futuros ciudadanos, se iba volviendo un tema fundamental, toda vez que sus problemas y demandas pasan por el tratamiento avanzado
de la información y del conocimiento. Por lo tanto ya no sólo basta ser diestro en el tratamiento
de información si no que además se requiere competencias para desarrollarse social, económica y políticamente en sociedades complejas, donde la ciudadanía activa y responsable es una necesidad
de primer orden. El planteamiento
de la tesis, cree que la formación
de competencias ciudadanas y la alfabetización digital están articuladas sobre la base
de tener al manejo y tratamiento
de la información
de problemas políticos económicos y sociales con usos
de herramientas tecnológicas como un fin y una metodología en si mismo. El modelo
de este trabajo toma los principios básicos
de la ¨nueva alfabetización digital¨, los procedimientos educativos y el currículum escolar, los cuales plasmados en la metodología
de la Web Quest, constituyen una propuesta integradora
de la formación ciudadana y del uso
de la tecnología Durante el año 2007 se trabajó en forma integrada con el currículo oficial
de Chile para primero y cuarto medio (tercera
de ESO y segundo
de bachillerato respectivamente) en sector
de historia y ciencias sociales. Todo ello se llevó a cabo, con establecimientos educacionales públicos y subvencionados. Los principales hallazgos van por las siguientes líneas: en primer lugar La formación ciudadana activa debe darse en un marco

de mi estudio son las formas
de suspensión y sustitución
de la ejecución
de las penas privativas
de libertad, medidas previstas y reguladas en el Capítulo III del Código Penal, en adelante CP, ex arts. 80 a 94 del mismo, así como los beneficios penitenciarios que pueden obtenerse a lo largo del cumplimiento
de una pena privativa
de libertad, esto es, las normas y leyes del Derecho Penitenciario.
Procuro dar una orientación desde el punto
de vista del ejercicio
de la abogacía y, especialmente, bajo el prisma del derecho
de defensa, reconocido no sólo durante el procedimiento penal, sino también en la fase final
de la condena mediante los beneficios que prevé la legislación penal y penitenciaria para el cumplimiento efectivo
de las penas.
Coincidiendo con la realización del presente estudio, se ha llevado a cabo una profunda reforma del CP, en especial
de su tercer capítulo, mediante la LO 1/2015,
de 30
de marzo, que modifica la LO 10/1995,
de 23
de noviembre, y que ocupará la mayor parte
de mi investigación.
Esta reforma ha comportado cambios sustanciales del CP, ya que el transcurso del tiempo y las nuevas demandas sociales evidenciaban la necesidad
de incluir determinadas modificaciones. Entre otras cosas, se introduce como novedad el supuesto
de la prisión permanente revisable, pero además se modifican las reglas penológicas, el régimen
de suspensión, sustitución, libertad condicional, antecedentes penales y comiso aplicado, novedades todas ellas que analizo detalladamente. Igualmente, la reforma cambia el modo
de valorar el cumplimiento
de la responsabilidad civil y la sustitución
de la prisión por expulsión del territorio nacional, aspectos ambos que también se estudian en la presente tesis.
Todos estos cambios sustanciales en el CP me han obligado a reorientar todo el contenido
de la investigación, que finalmente ha dado lugar a la presente tesis, que se ha estructurado en seis partes. La primera abarca los supuestos generales y especiales
de suspensión; en la segunda analizo los beneficios
de la sustitución
de las penas privativas
de libertad; la tercera lo es a razón del cumplimiento
de las penas
de prisión, a saber los beneficios penitenciarios y el régimen y tratamiento que prevé la ley penitenciaria; en la cuarta parte estudio la última etapa del cumplimiento
de una pena privativa
de libertad, a saber la libertad condicional; la quinta se centra en la libertad vigilada y, finalmente, la prisión permanente, contemplada en el nuevo CP, ocupa la última y sexta parte.

▼ <i>"Liquid pedagogy. Contextual and doctrinal sources" TEXT: The subject of the thesis is the liquid pedagogy: understood as a pedagogical discourse, theoretical and practical, characterised from the social conditions of the Liquid Modernity, site between the last decades of 20th century and what bring of the XXI. The thesis defends the possibility of a conceptual articulation that keeps a fundamental part of the modern idea of pedagogy (a coherent discourse, global and normative on education), to the same time that throw away another one (the absolute universalism). It characterises the liquid pedagogy as a postmodern one, but in relation to a Post-modernity that does not suppose a radical split, since this understands how a palimpsest, that is to say: as a historical superposition of different layers and imaginaries (in which modern and pre-modern elements and can be found). The research treats of the following three hypotheses: 1) the imaginary social is condition of possibility and explains the emergency of the liquid pedagogy. 2) there is no contradiction in the possibility of found and legitimate a liquid pedagogy and postmodern. 3) there is possible understand and build on a liquid pedagogy on the base of: a) the Tao regarding his life style; b) the New School regarding his means; c) the philosophy of Joseph Jacotot regarding his purposes. The liquid pedagogical proposal is thought, no like a simply empirical fact of the pedagogical liquidity, but as a point of split where the liquid posits as a normative value. In this sense, the importance to consider the liquid pedagogy as a discourse and from a theoretical point of view grows from the same discourse that builds the pedagogical reality -or the educational context-. The point is to build the pedagogical reality no in a literal sense, of course, of phenomena and material relations, but whereas significant entity. This is to say, the discourse of the liquid pedagogy builds the image that the individuals (professionals of the education or not) have from the pedagogical reality. And this image is the frame of reference for these individuals to take his decisions, in favour or against them.</I>

▼ <b>THESIS SUMMARY:</b> The possibility to print tiny amounts of functional materials in a controllable way is of interest in a large number of applications, for instance in the manufacturing of organic electronics, in the deposition of artificial organs (the so-called organ printing), or in the fabrication of miniaturized devices in areas like biosensing. This has prompted the development of microfabrication techniques capable of depositing such functional materials. The present work is focused on one of these techniques, particularly on a laser-based direct-writing technique called laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT), in which laser pulses are used to deposit material from a donor film to a receptor substrate. This technique is especially interesting due to the possibility that it offers to print droplets of solutions containing functional materials with a high resolution. Moreover, it has additional advantages such as the capability to work in air (at atmospheric pressure and room temperature), the fact that it is a non-contact technique that avoids contamination problems, and the possibility to combine it with laser micromachining. In this work, a complete study of the LIFT of liquid solutions is performed in order to achieve a better understanding of this technique and to find the optimum printing conditions. Such study comprises the analysis of the role that some of the most important experimental parameters have on the printed droplets, as well as the analysis of the mechanisms involved in the ejection and deposition of material through LIFT. This is accomplished by means of both the morphological characterization of the printed droplets at different conditions and the time-resolved imaging of the LIFT process, including the ejection and transport of liquid, as well as the deposition of liquid on the receptor substrate. The present work has provided a complete picture of the LIFT process: the experimental conditions adequate for droplet printing have been set up, and the mechanisms responsible for the generation of droplets have been unveiled. The feasibility of the technique for protein printing has also been demonstrated. Moreover, it has also been found that the preparation of the liquid film in thin form is the major problem that the technique faces. This last aspect has motivated the research of a new technique capable of dispensing with the preparation of the liquid film. ▼ The community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) remains an important cause of disease worldwide. Despite advances in diagnostic methods and antibiotic treatment, the morbidity and mortality of NAC remain high.
The hypothesis of the thesis suggests that it is possible to monitor the inflammatory response that occurs during the NAC and that this response may be influenced by antibiotics used to treat it, and modulated by adjuvant therapy with corticosteroids. In order to demonstrate this hypothesis, we developed two prospective studies and a randomized trial.
In the first study, a total of 38 consecutive patients with CAP and with extensive radiographic involvement and respiratory failure were prospectively included. For all cases, serial determination of cytokines (TNF- alpha, IL-1beta, IL-6, IL-8 and IL-10) were obtained at the time of admission and on days 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 of treatment.
In the second study, 52 consecutive patients with pneumococcal pneumonia were prospectively included. Concentrations of circulating were determined for all patients. To asses the effects of treatment on the systemic expression of cytokine production, patients were divided into two groups: those initially treated only with beta-lactam (beta-lactam group) and those initially treated with combination therapy including beta-lactams plus fluoroquinolone (combination therapy group).
Finally, we conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, which included 56 patients admitted with CAP and with extensive radiographic involvement and respiratory failure. All patients were treated with ceftriaxone and levofloxacin, and were randomly assigned to treatment with corticosteroid therapy, administered in the form of a methyl-prednisolone bolus given prior to antibiotic treatment followed by a tapering of nine days.
The results of the thesis suggest that all studied cytokine, except for IL-1beta, could be detected in venous blood. However, only the cytokines IL-6, IL-8 and IL-10 were detected in all patients with pneumonia on admission, with a significant decrease at 48 hours that correlate with the clinical defervescence.
Regarding the relationship between inflammatory response and prognosis of pneumonia, the initial concentrations of cytokines were higher and remained elevated longer in patients who poor outcome.
Finally, the main objective of the thesis was to demonstrate that the use of corticosteroids as an adjunct therapy for pneumonia could prevent an excessive inflammatory response, improving the prognosis of more severe episodes of CAP. The results of the tesis show that in patients with CAP admitted with respiratory failure and extensive radiographic involment, the administration of methyl-prednisolone in combination with antibiotic treatment was associated with better outcomes of several clinical variables as the ratio pO2/FiO2, radiological resolution and scale “time to resolution of morbidity” (TRM), and a reduced need for mechanical ventilation. TEXT: Hox genes are key developmental genes involved in patterning the antero-posterior axis of most metazoans studied so far. They generally are linked in genomic cluster and expressed with spatial and temporal colinearity in amphioxus and vertebrates. The closer to the 3' extreme of the cluster the gene is, the earlier and more anteriorly it is expressed. Nonetheless, this is fully
true for all genes only in vertebrate clusters, since the expression of almost all central and all posterior Hox genes of amphioxus, which represents the closest relative to the chordate ancestor, is not known, and the expression in hemichordates and tunicates is not always colinear. In this thesis, we present a complete expression profile of amphioxus Hox genes and interestingly report the breaking of both spatial and temporal colinearity of some central and posterior Hox genes. Posterior Hox genes are expressed in structures like the notochord and posterior parts of the gut. Hox14 had the most divergent expression pattern, being also present in the anterior cerebral vesicle and pharyngeal endoderm. This is the first report of Hox expression in the most anterior part of a central nervous system. We also show that Hox14 expression is partially regulated by retinoic acid (RA) (in notochord and hindgut), like it happens for more anterior Hox genes are. On the other hand, Hox14 expression in the cerebral vesicle and pharynx are not influenced by RA. The lack of constriction in the posterior part of vertebrate and cephalochordate Hox cluster may be the cause of their independent expansion and their co-option for patterning different structures, allowing the breaking of colinearity in deuterostomes. </i>
