This work presents research into adult students’ beliefs regarding some aspects of the language and the way to learn it, in students who are studying Spanish as L3 or as an additional language in Greece. We consider belief systems as part of the individual variables of the learner which can affect the learning process as well as its results and we are interested in studying their construction or modification in the social context of learning, as manifested in the interactions between students, teachers and interviewers. The participants in this study are Greek students who decided to learn Spanish in the Cervantes Institute of Athens once they had finished compulsory schooling. They have a broad linguistic background, since Spanish is the third or fourth Foreign Language (FL) they are learning. Furthermore, as they are adults and they choose to study Spanish, it is likely that they have formed some ideas about the target language and the way to learn it. The main research question that has guided the design and implementation of our study is: What are the beliefs that Greek students bring or construct in the classroom of Spanish as FL regarding the language that they learn and the learning process? Our goal is, in the first place, to know more about their beliefs so as to try to reveal how much these beliefs may influence their behavior towards the language, towards the speakers of the language, and the way to learn it. This study employs the ethnographic approach that permits us to observe and understand the participants’ behavior from a holistic and emic perspective. The data was collected by means of interviews, students’ learning journals, classroom observations, a report that we designed, and linguistic life stories. In conclusion, this study confirms previous research that showed that while students seem to have an integrated belief in their belief system, they don’t always act in accordance with it. Furthermore, it has clearly shown that once the context is changed, e.g. the context of teaching - learning, there may also be a change in the learners’ beliefs.
