1. Masferrer Niubó, Emili. Estudi de factors pronòstics genètics i moleculars en el carcinoma escatós de penis i relació amb el virus del papil·loma humà.

Degree: 2014, Universitat de Barcelona

Penile squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) is a rare tumor in our area but can be life threatening to patients affected. In this study we have looked for potential prognostic markers for this disease. In the first paper, we studied the MYC gene by FISH and Myc protein expression by immunohistochemistry in 79 cases of PSCC. We observed that MYC gains progressively increased during PSCC progression from in situ samples to metastases. Furthermore, we demonstrated an association between MYC gains and bad outcome. We did not find any relationship between MYC gains and the presence of HPV where a significant association between the presence of HPV and overexpression of Myc was found. In the second paper, the phenomenon of epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) in PSCC was assessed. We studied by immunohistochemistry the expression of E-Cadherin, Vimentin and the transcription factors Snail, Twist and Zeb1. The presence of HPV was associated with EMT. EMT phenomenon was observed in 43.5% of the evaluated samples. Our findings suggest that EMT is associated with an increased mortality in PSCC and that HPV could be implicated in this process.
