Because of its geographical location, the region Kenscoff-Mahotière (Haiti) is subject to various cases of slope instability due to rough terrain, rainfall, variation of suction in unsaturated soils, earthquakes and clay and limestone formations. These instability problems are mainly the result of modifications in the shear strength of the soils caused by these phenomena. The objective of this thesis is to analyze the influence of these phenomena on slope stability by applying them to slope Kenscoff-Mahotière. In our work, we mainly focus on the progress made in the field of unsaturated soil (suction) and seismicity (earthquake), both in terms of modeling and experimental techniques to study the behaviour of soils under these two factors. Then, we couple them in a parametric approach to the position of the water table and the rainfall in order to take into consideration all the parameters that could cause this instability. To understand these approaches, we performed in situ experimental part a series of geotechnical and geophysical tests, and laboratory on samples taken from the site, tests more specific in saturated and unsaturated conditions to determine the parameters needed to estimate seismic and hydro-mechanical behaviour of soils and evaluate the evolution of their shear strength. Then, in the numerical modeling, we analyzed the stability of Kenscoff-Mahotière. This modeling was performed with the software GEOSLOPE using limit equilibrium methods coupled with finite element methods to analyze the role of these parameters on stability. The applications made from different approaches discussed in our model have also to understand the main causes that may lead to slope rupture Kenscoff-Mahotière.

De part sa situation géographique, la zone de Kenscoff-Mahotière (Haïti) est une région soumise à divers cas d’instabilité de talus dus au relief accidenté, à la pluviométrie, à la variation de succion dans les sols non saturés, aux séismes et aux formations calcaire et argileuse. Ces problèmes d’instabilité sont dus principalement à de fortes modifications de la résistance au cisaillement des sols en place provoquées par ces phénomènes. L’objectif de cette thèse est d’analyser l’influence de ces phénomènes stabilisants ou déclenchants sur la stabilité des pentes en les appliquant au glissement de Kenscoff-Mahotière. Dans notre travail, nous mettons essentiellement l’accent sur les avancées réalisées dans le domaine des sols non saturés (succion) et de la sismicité (séisme), à la fois en termes de techniques expérimentales et de modélisation pour étudier le comportement des sols soumis à ces deux facteurs. Par la suite, nous les couplons dans une approche paramétrique à la position de la nappe et à la pluviométrie afin de prendre en compte tous les paramètres susceptibles d’entraîner cette instabilité. Kasai oriental is one of the provinces of the DRC where the price of construction materials is higher. A cement bag, for example, is four to five times more expensive than in the other provinces. The main reason is the dependence of this province, none of these construction materials are produced locally. The most effective solution to this problem is to locally produce building materials and one of them is the clay bricks. This thesis focuses on the analysis and good understanding of the nature and behavior of Kasai oriental soils (DRC), and aims to propose solutions to their use in clay bricks manufacturing. The study is limited to the temperatures from 550°C up to 900°C. In this range, firing at 900°C would be suitable to kasaien climate realities. Eight soil samples were collected at Mbujimayi and Muene-Ditu, two major cities of the province. All samples are divided into three sites: Mbujimayi, Luetet and Nduba. Geotechnical, chemical, mineralogical and mechanical analyses were conducted at the Université catholique de Louvain in Belgium. They showed that all sites contain suitable soils for clay bricks manufacturing. Nevertheless, some soils need to be improved for their brick quality by additives. Two soils (one for Mbujimayi and another for Muene-Ditu) are completely unsuitable for producing acceptable quality bricks. Our studies also provide hydromechanical characteristics of soils which are important to understand their behavior during mining processes and other civil engineering works. Ultrasonic tests were also conducted in this work to auscultate the degree of cracking of bricks during the different stages of development. In addition to the influence of microcracking, they show a good correlation between acoustic properties of bricks and their uniaxial compressive strengths.

L’objet de cette thèse est d’analyser et de comprendre la nature et le comportement des sols du Kasaï oriental, afin de proposer des solutions pour leur utilisation comme terre à briques. L’étude s’est limitée à la plage des températures comprises entre 550°et 900°C. Huit échantillons de sols ont été prélevés à Mbujimayi et Muene-Ditu, deux grandes villes de la province du Kasaï oriental. Les analyses minéralogiques, chimiques, géotechniques et mécaniques ont été conduites dans plusieurs laboratoires de l’Université catholique de Louvain en Belgique. Les résultats de ces analyses ont montré que tous les trois sites contiennent des sols susceptibles d’être utilisés en briqueterie avec une nécessité d’amélioration pour quelques uns. Ce travail fournit également des caractéristiques hydromécaniques des sols, indispensables aux études de leur comportement pendant les phases d’exploitation des carrières à briques et de construction d’ouvrages de génie civil. Des mesures ultrasoniques ont également été réalisées afin d’ausculter le degré de fissuration des briques pendant les différentes étapes de leur élaboration. The use of laterites as building materials in the tropical countries, in particular in the road embankments and restraint dikes of mining discharge is strongly increased. After their implementation in tailings sites to dyke the mining discharges to avoid diffuse pollution in the environment, these lateritic materials are submitted to complex solicitation which can influence in a very important way their hydromechanical properties. In most of the cases of breaks of dikes, hydraulic fracturing is the evoked main cause. Several authors analyzed the properties of soils under mechanic and hydric solicitation. However, these analyses do not take into account the chemical influence of the liquid percolating the matrix of ground This work analyzes the hydromechanical behavior of compacted laterites percolated by liquid effluents with different chemical nature. Demineralized water was studied as reference case. The tests included the measurement of compressibility, shear strength and saturated hydraulic conductivity when the specimens were imbibed with the different fluids. (demineralized water and wastewater effluents emanating from concentrators.) A vast experimental program of laboratory was thus led to determine the hydromechanical properties of not polluted lateritic soils and those contaminated by wastewater effluents from concentrators. The results showed that wastewater effluents emanating from concentrators affect the Atterberg limits, compressibility and shear strength parameters. Chemical characteristics and saturated hydraulic conductivity of compacted lateritic soils in the restraint dikes of the mining discharges are significantly affected. The acid liquid effluent decreases the liquidity limit; on the other hand the liquidity limit (wL) undergoes a light increase in the basic liquid effluent. Concomitantly we observed an increase of the plasticity index for the acid effluent and a decrease of plastic zone for the basic one. The saturated hydraulic conductivity varies in the same way, it grows for specimens percolated with the acid liquid effluent. For specimens compacted with the same density of the normal optimum Proctor, the compressibility is high for the saturated lateritic soil imbibed with the acid liquid effluent, the effective cohesion decreases and the effective angle of internal friction grows. The measurement of lateritic soil’s pH contaminated with the basic liquid effluent indicated a light increase in value of pH. This is also accompanied with a light increase of the cation exchange capacity of the soil. The effect of initial suction and density before imbibition was also investigated. These analyses reveal that lateritic soils are susceptible to collapse (show potential collapse) during passage of the partially saturated state to the saturated state, (on wetting path). However, structural changes caused by the initial saturation and density of specimens seem to be more important for explaining the volumetric and deviator behavior than chemical interaction.
